FanGraphs Live! Friday: MLB the Show, Dodgers at Braves, 2 PM ET

In this week’s MLB The Show 20 stream, featuring Paul Sporer, Ben Clemens, and Dan Szymborski, the Los Angeles Dodgers head to Atlanta in a battle of first-place teams.

Last we met, the Colorado Rockies were still, shockingly, holding off the Dodgers for first place in the NL West. Two weeks has changed things considerably; the Dodgers swept the Rockies in four games last weekend and then took two of three from the Cincinnati Reds. After hovering around .500 through mid-May, the Dodgers now stand at 39-29, the third-best record in the National League.

Starting for the Dodgers is David Price (6-4, 3.92 ERA, 3.31 FIP), who struggled in his last outing, allowing six runs and 10 hits in four innings against the Rockies. Los Angeles only came out ahead in that contest because Colorado’s bullpen allowed seven runs, letting the Dodgers come back from a 7-2 deficit in the late innings. Sitting out against the lefty Cole Hamels is Gavin Lux, who has been on a tear, adding 100 points of OPS over the last two weeks (.645 to .760) and is now third on the team with 10 home runs.

Hamels (2-8, 4.48 ERA, 4.76 FIP) has struggled since taking over Felix Hernandez’s spot in the rotation and like Price, was pummeled in his last start, allowing six runs over three innings to his former team, the Philadelphia Phillies. Ronald Acuña Jr. hasn’t disappointed, however, and has the third-most All-Star votes among National League outfielders, behind only Charlie Blackmon and the surprising Starling Marte. Ozzie Albies is still on-target to a four-win season, but his power output has continued to disappoint, hitting only five homers after slugging 24 in each of the last two seasons. Albies stands second in the voting behind Keston Hiura, who has hit 20 homers and has a .992 OPS, but whose defensive struggles have resulted in him only being worth 1.7 WAR, just a run ahead of Albies.
