Dodgers Land Reddick, Hill for Trio of Pitching Prospects

We all saw the Jay Bruce trade coming. Seen that one coming for years. This one was a bit more unexpected:

Although Dave Cameron predicted the Dodgers would land Reddick and Hill last week, there was a case to be made for keeping Reddick, and the A’s were reportedly discussing an extension with Hill up until this morning. Now, they’re both Dodgers.

It’s a splashy haul for the Athletics in exchange for two rentals, though moreso in terms of quantity than quality. That’s not to say there isn’t quality to be found in this package — there is — but the Dodgers were able to maintain the consensus top four prospects in their system in Julio Urias (obviously), Jose De Leon, Cody Bellinger and Alex Verdugo.

Francelis Montas and Grant Holmes were each top-100 prospects in Baseball America’s midseason update, and Jharel Cotton has been a fixture of Carson Cistulli’s Fringe Five series. Montas, who came to the Dodgers from the White Sox in the offseason as part of the three-way Todd Frazier trade, is a hard-throwing righty who likely profiles as a late-inning reliever and has missed time this season with a broken rib. Holmes is a righty with a mid-90’s fastball and a power curve that profiles as a potential mid-rotation starter or high-leverage reliever. Cotton’s future likely lies in the bullpen. It’s possible that the A’s received a trio of relievers, but each comes with upside.

Crazy as it sounds, Hill’s been about the closest thing to Clayton Kershaw when he’s pitched over the last year or so. Problem is, he’s pitched about as much as Kershaw has since Kershaw hit the disabled list last month with a back issue. Hill’s problem is just a blister, which is far less concerning, but at this point no Dodgers pitchers feel safe. Nevertheless, Hill provides both depth, and the highest upside of any non-Kershaw starter.

Reddick’s fit is of even more intrigue, because of this:

Seems like there could be more to come from the Dodgers. Their front office is certainly no stranger to blockbuster moves, and the Puig rumblings have been going on for years. Stay tuned for that, and stay tuned for more on the Reddick/Hill trade from Jeff Sullivan.

Seems like a massive overpay for two rentals….disappointing move.

Two relievers (albeit good ones) and a 20 year old in High-A who may also have to move to the bullpen doesn’t strike me as an overpay at all. That sounds about right for two major leaguers with injury issues who are good when healthy.
