One Night Only: Previews for Weekend of April 29th

An actual drawing from Daniel Hudson’s dream journal.

This edition of One Night Only contains:

1. Hot, bullet-pointed previews for six games.

2. Pitcher and Team NERD scores for every one of this weekend’s games.

3. A challenging blend of vim and vigor.

Friday, April 29th
Toronto (7) at New York Americans (8) | 19:05 | ET
• This game brings up that age-old question: “Who would you rather not listen to: Yankee play-by-play man Michael Kay or Blue Jay color commentator Buck Martinez?”
• It brings up that other age-old question, “Freddy Garcia sill pitches in the majors?!?”
• And which continues: “No, seriously: the one who used to pitch for the Mariners?”

Los Angeles Americans (5) at Tampa Bay (7) | 19:10 ET
• Blah blah blah Sam Fuld blah blah blah.
• Blah? Sam Fuld blah blah blah?
• Blah! Blah blah Sam Fuld. Blah!

Saturday, April 30th
Detroit (0) at Cleveland (10) | 18:05 ET
• Tonight, young right-hander Alex White makes his debut for Cleveland.
• White’s numbers in four Triple-A starts this season: 23.2 IP, 10.65 K/9, 1.90 BB/9, 0.38 HR/9, 2.27 FIP.
• Per our own Marc Hulet, White (the No. 2 prospect in the Cleveland system) profiles as a ground-baller, too.

Florida (6) at Cincinnati (9) | 19:10 ET
• In this corner, staning 6-foot7 and weighting 249 pounds, it’s the indomitable Josh Johnson (9).
• In this other corner, wearing a do-rag and far-off look, it’s the considerably more domitable Edinson Volquez (8).
• Except, maybe not that domitable, actually, considering the 3.93 xFIP (102 xFIP-).

Sunday, May 1st
St. Louis (10) at Atlanta (5) | 13:35 ET
• Today’s starter for the Cardinals, Jaime Garcia (9), has suddenly gotten better at everything.
• Today’s starter for the Braves, Derek Lowe (6), has basically been the same amount of good for 10 years.
• Or has been: all of a sudden this season, he has a double-digit swinging-strike percentage.

Chicago Nationals (2) at Arizona (10) | 16:10 ET
• Diamondback starter Daniel Hudson (9) has done well by NERD so far, owing to how he’s been effed by bad luck.
• Regard: 30.1 IP, 9.49 K/9, 3.56 BB/9, .337 BABIP, 57.2 LOB%, 35.7 GB%, 5.6% HR/FB, 5.64 ERA, 3.62 xFIP, 94 xFIP-.
• “Damn you, Luck Dragons!” screams a weary Daniel Hudson.

Carson: As you slip into that warm gravy-abyss of early onset senility, these One Night Only segments get increasingly magnificent — so much so that I have plugged my computer into a surge protector for fear the Awesome might obliterate my hard drive.
