Dan Szymborski: I think the Giants did it more thinking towards next year.

Dan Szymborski: They didn’t give up relievers they absolutely eneded after all

Dan Szymborski: I think the chance to get Dubon for a couple of relievers (or a reliever and a bad starter) were just too much to pass up

Dan Szymborski: I think 2020 might be more interesting.

Dan Szymborski: Nothing’s ever for sure, but it’s pretty much Thor or nothing when it comes to Tucker and the Astros probably wouldn’t give a lot more than Tucker in such a case.

Dan Szymborski: His stuff was thin as a starter, but he’s been much better since being converted to bullpen. Problem is he’s barely touched AA.

Dan Szymborski: Fair is a dirty word when it comes to closers.

Dan Szymborski: I don’t think the Dodgers are willing to trade Lux.

Dan Szymborski: I *might* offer Ruiz to Pirates, say “that’s it, just Ruiz, take it or leave it” and walk away if the Pirates don’t grab it

Dan Szymborski: It depends how happy they are not trading him at all.

Dan Szymborski: I haven’t talked to anyone in the org last couple of days, but I’d make an educated guess based on what I know that they really like SWR’s upside.

Dan Szymborski: Maybe Kiley can expand; he’s always burning up the phone lines!

Keith Law’s T30 Dog Breeds: The Pirates continue to ask the Dodgers for Ruiz and one of May/Lux, which is insane. How did that front office go downhill so quickly in their assessment of trade values? Between this ask, and their previous trades (Archer and Cole deals), they seem to be way out there.

Kiley McDaniel: To be fair, PIT has always had insane asks on their top assets under Huntington. The Archer deal was the one time they paid someone else’s big ask

Jim: How many more trades does Dipoto need to do to get his fix?

Kiley McDaniel: Asked Eric about this and we couldn’t think of one

Dan Szymborski: The Dodgers might do Ruiz/May for Vazquez if the Pirates are also fetching prime Javier Vazquez by time machine and including him too.

Dan Szymborski: Montero/Pineda?

Derek : For as much crap as the Mets are taking, the Stroman deal strikes me as part of an interesting, possibly underused strategy. Whether or not their expectation to contend next year is realistic, buying someone with an additional year of control while selling some expirings to gear up for next season is kind of a neat strategy for teams on the verge of contending (and also maybe too tight of a needle for the Mets to competently thread, but still…). It seems like the Reds are trying to do a similar thing.

Dan Szymborski: I think it’s fine if they *just* acquire STroman. The issue that we were all mocking them for was their apparent simulatneous desire to dump Syndergaard and/or Wheels

Kiley McDaniel: Going back to Jazz/Gallen: the gap in prospect ranking between them can be made up in the preference for a type of asset (now MLB vs. higher risk/contact issues/may be 2 years away) and makeup perception (Jazz is regarded as a bit of a personality, Gallen is a high floor, polished feel/pitchability type). Eric and I aren’t editorializing about Jazz, we’ve heard it from enough teams that it’s part of the perception, if not reality.

Dan Szymborski: Also, Jazz Chisholm is an 80 name

RAndoM: Is the Chisholm for Gallen deal more a reflection of the Dbacks losing faith in Chisholm getting his strikeout issues under control, or a reflection of a belief that Gallen is for real?

Boomstick: Will the failure of Jerry Dipoto to pull off a trade by today’s deadline be the 7th sign of the apocalypse?

Dan Szymborski: What if ALL these trades are his conception and he’s now the puppetmaster? Did you consider that?

John: What do you all make of the Nats throwing 3 new relievers at the wall, hoping they stick. And what they gave up? Thx!

Dan Szymborski: The thing is, the Nats didn’t give up a ton. I think long-term, they need to do a much better job at looking at their interesting youngish arms than they’ve done, but they need the relief pitching right now.

Kiley McDaniel: rAndoM: I think Arizona is a more progressive club that prefers performance and now ability, may pull a power rebuild like MIL did while Miami, under the Jeter group, has consistently shot for the moon with the highest upside bats they can find (Monte Harrison, Lewis Brinson, Magneuris Sierra, etc.) and will probably need to wait a bit longer for contention

Dan Szymborski: Shane Greene to Braves

Dylan: Can you talk Padres fans off the ledge about losing Franmil Reyes? People are seriously upset.

Dan Szymborski: I’m a fan of Franmil Reyes. But he doesn’t bring a lot of defensive value to the table and it’s a position at which the Padres have a glut.

Dan Szymborski: The glut is affecting their ability to look at all these guys long-term in the outfield. Personally, I suspect that the front office is more willing to curtail Wil Myers playing time more than ownership wants them to.

Kiley McDaniel: If i’m gonna speculate on the price ATL paid for Greene

Kiley McDaniel: Kyle Muller would make some sense but may be a bit rich, Alex Jackson and Jasseel De La Cruz would also seem to be DET types

Kiley McDaniel: As covered in yesterday’s article, ATL has no 40-man issues and have preferred under this regime to move multiple lower prospects and hold onto the close to MLB higher ranked dudes

Drew: Are the brewers just going for quantity rather than quality? Maybe I was deluded into thinking they would actually trade for someone noteworthy.

Dan Szymborski: We still have a half-hour yet, but I *am* disappointed that the Brewers haven’t made a more significant starting pitcher add than Lyles.

Dan Szymborski: Lyles is interesting enough that it’s fine to have him at 5, but he shouldn’t be *the* rotation pickup.

Dan Szymborski: And yes, Pomeranz can technically start, but I wouldn’t be interested in that.

BM: I’m devastated about the the Dubon trade for the Brewers. Trading your 3rd best prospect for old trash isn’t awesome.

Kiley McDaniel: Dubon is a high probability, ready for MLB utility IF that has a chance to have a multi-year run as a 2 WAR type 50ish FV.  You have to be willing to move that guy for a playoff run

Chase: Is Tanner Roark going to the A’s an upgrade for his value, or does it take a hit?

Kiley McDaniel: And MIL has been able to invent that guy, i.e. Villar or Hernan Perez

Dan Szymborski: I think it’s an upgrade for his value. No QO now.

David Wiers: Why haven’t my beloved A’s gotten more pitching? Is the injury riddled cadre of arms really going to be back in time to make a difference in the rotation?

Dan Szymborski: Roark is a solid pitcher. Whether you’re the REAL David or not.

Kel: Should dodgers start looking at Kela if Vasquez isn’t working?

Dan Szymborski: I would, but the Pirates, smelling Ruiz/Lux blood, may not want to downsell the Dodgers on a lower model.

Kiley McDaniel: I’ve heard this sort of thing referred to as the Brewers power rebuild and I’m kinda surprised more teams don’t do it? CHW, SD, KC and MIA are doing the more traditional-type longer rebuild of name-brand prospects which is also fine and can work, but I’d prefer what ARI is doing and MIL did
