I’d argue that the Mets do not have zero risk at stake here. 3 years of arbitration with Harvey is pretty valuable and they’d lose out on that with another injury. If anything – you could possibly argue a principal-agent issue. What would you say?

Eno Sarris: I thought the piece was good. I don’t think the three years of arbitration = a whole career, so it’s still skewed in favor of the team, even once you factor those three years in.

Eno Sarris: Even if the bust rate on prospects is no longer a 50/50 proposition, Fulmer very much strikes me as a 50/50 proposition at best. The injury risk, the mechanics, the previous command issues… I think he’s maybe 50% big leaguer, 30% #2. Let’s look at another number two type — Jordan Zimmerman? Been worth 20 wins. Reliever would be 5-10. So 50% 0, 20% 5, 30% 30, let’s do that. Still worth more than Yoenis if you sum it up, But there’s still a 60% chance or so that Yoenis worth more.

Eno Sarris: Peralta, Bolsinger. Greene still has a chance of having a starter’s arsenal, and injury gives him an excuse. Nova > Bolsinger since the both fastball/curve guys and Nova has like three MPH.

Eno Sarris: DeGrom, Thor (though how many innings does HE have), Matz/Colon — still an awesome postseason rotation. And Grandy/Wright/Cespedes/TDA proving to be a good basis for a lineup.

Storen didn’t collapse after the Papelbon trade, he collapsed 5 scoreless appearances later.

Eno Sarris: Yeah and if leverage stuff can be believed at all, he’s significantly worse in high leverage situations, so he should have gotten better, unless by moving out of closer’s role, he actually ended up in higher leverage situations. I’m not sure it was the right move exactly — a Clippard type might have been just as good without any waves — but almost every contender buys a reliever at the deadline, it’s not a big deal.

Eno Sarris: I have to give up on Randall Delgado I guess. Verrett, I want to see what his velocity is like actually starting instead of spot starting. If he’s under 90… the change is good by movement, the slider is his out pitch, but velocity matters a bit.

Eno Sarris: The Bucs have him throwing his good pitches more and his bad pitches less! I think it really could be that simple. Also, possible that throwing his good pitch (rising four-seamer) more is helping his command. That’s a big Pirate thing too, as Cole told me.

How are you evaluating Rendon as a keeper? His bat seems to finally be coming around, but I’m nervous he’s destined to miss significant time every year. Trying to choose between him, EE, and CGomez as my fourth keeper (def keeping Correa, Springer, and Pederson).

Eno Sarris: Gomez injury concerns put him third for me in that group. EE vs Rendon is tough because EE looking a bit older, but I’ll take the big bat and try to get Rendon back in draft.

Eno Sarris: Knee Deep Breaking Bud? There are a few out there that smell very cannabis-like but I forget which ones now. Look for ‘floral’ in the description, IMO.

So I don’t think for a second that Cespedes should be the MVP (as Keith Law pointed out on twitter, Yo’s line with the Mets is about the same as Harper’s line on the season). However, I am amazed at how forcefully he’s pushed the Mets over the win curve. He took the roster spot of sub-replacement guys and put up nearly 3 WAR. That is a hell of a lot of value to his team. May not be Most Valuable, but certainly Very Valuable.

Eno Sarris: Yeah and to Johnny5’s point about that being worth money on top of on-the-field production, it certainly tips the scales. I tried to look at Barry Zito in terms of ‘championship shares’ so that I could give him more value for some seminal postseason outings, but it was really tough to figure out, even with WPA. So I don’t think, even if Fulmer turns into a (semi-injured) #2 for the Tigers, that the Mets will rue the trade too much.

Eno Sarris: Also, don’t forget that Wright and TDA returned around the same time.

Hey Eno, what player valuation method do you use for fantasy? Z-scores? SGP? PVM? Reasons why?

Eno Sarris: I use z-scores for redraft leagues in which the owners change from year to year, because a universal approach seems right. I think SGP is interesting for keeper leagues and redrafts where the owners are mostly the same every year, though, because it asks the question: what is this stat worth in this league.

Do you think Xander Bogaerts can develop in-game power to match the batting practice and scouting reports of monster power? His swing/approach looks like he’s wearing a roller skate on his back foot, and thus doesn’t achieve the leverage needed to lift balls. He’s already having an issue of too many groundballs in his career.

Is this a year of unexpected variance, or is this the year that proprietary analysis beat public analysis to the point that our projections were not suited to the state of play? Does seem like a lot of successful teams are doing things once thought to be verboten.

Eno Sarris: The problem with verboten things is that you have to see them happen year after year to really believe them. But obviously in-house projections are going to be better than ours. For example, they have minor league trackman numbers on most guys…. What I wouldn’t give for that.

Not sure that I have a great answer for the alternative, but just balk at idea that MVP should follow WAR leaderboards to a T. Maybe consider WAR + WPA + some “narrative”? Narrative is no small part of the fun, tbh: we follow these like humans! Not giving player x the MVP despite a higher WAR doesn’t make that WAR leaderboard go away, but maybe it gives someone who was important in a less tangible way a note that keeps that exciting season relevant.

Not necessarily meaning to have a specific conversation re: this year’s races, just a general framework of how to think about it. Harper has both the numbers, the team-specific “value” (given that he’s the only reason they’re remotely in the race), and story (22-yo with staggering offensive line). Donaldson also good numbers + narrative in AL.

Eno Sarris: Donaldson pretty much lock solid case right now, you right. Maybe Harper is too, but we’ll see some debate I guess. I’m willing to hear it if we’re talking two guys that are at least within a win or two. Best brewery models in 2015 imo: distribute and focus, building a rep in your specialty (thinking Cascade, de Garde, etc.); brewpub/local kegs-only and constantly make new things with a consistent vibe (Tired Hands comes immediately to mind).

Eno Sarris: The local brewpub is and will always be the high floor approach. People go to bad local brewpubs because they are local! Rep is specialty is great way to distribute, though, and starting as a brewpub is a good high-floor way to find that thing you’re best at in order to cautiously distribute.

I liked the article about the futility of trying to generate backspin w a downward chop. The next thing you should ask the players is whether they think their grip on the bat at the moment of impact makes a difference in how far the ball travels. It actually doesn’t! Ask Alan Nathan. But it’s so counterintuitive, at least to me, that I wondered what ballplayers think. You should definitely ask Todd Frazier if you get the chance.
