Eno Sarris Baseball Chat – 9/10/15
10:54 |
: yolo
|
10:55 |
|
12:00 |
IS IT THAT TIME OF THE WEEK? |
12:00 |
: Yes.
|
12:00 |
Don’t “yolo”. Don’t be that guy! |
12:00 |
|
12:00 |
I sent his exact q to Dave yesterday and wanted to see your thoughts as well: Did you get a chance to read Michael Baumann’s article on Grantland re. Harvey? He employed moral hazard as an argument. I’d argue that the Mets do not have zero risk at stake here. 3 years of arbitration with Harvey is pretty valuable and they’d lose out on that with another injury. If anything – you could possibly argue a principal-agent issue. What would you say? |
12:01 |
: I thought the piece was good. I don’t think the three years of arbitration = a whole career, so it’s still skewed in favor of the team, even once you factor those three years in.
|
12:01 |
Cepesedes has already been worth 2.7 wins for the Mets. What are the odds he produces more value for them than Fulmer does for the Tigers? |
12:05 |
: Even if the bust rate on prospects is no longer a 50/50 proposition, Fulmer very much strikes me as a 50/50 proposition at best. The injury risk, the mechanics, the previous command issues… I think he’s maybe 50% big leaguer, 30% #2. Let’s look at another number two type — Jordan Zimmerman? Been worth 20 wins. Reliever would be 5-10. So 50% 0, 20% 5, 30% 30, let’s do that. Still worth more than Yoenis if you sum it up, But there’s still a 60% chance or so that Yoenis worth more.
|
12:06 |
![]() will i continue to stay sweet? |
12:07 |
: Nice question method. Given his swing change, I’m taking the over on his projected power. I think he can be a .275/.330/.450 guy when the patience starts coming in, too.
|
12:07 |
Will Alex Guerrero be traded? Keep thinking he is salvageable… |
12:07 |
: Contract gets nixed if he does, so he wasn’t a good deadline asset. But he might be a good offseason one.
|
12:08 |
Are you intrigued, from a fantasy perspective, by Adam Warren joining the Yankees rotation? He was solid earlier this year; what kind of numbers might we expect? |
12:08 |
|
12:08 |
you think stanton plays again this year? and is he in your top 10-12 next year? |
12:09 |
: I think he falls out of the top 10 and into the 10-15 spot for me. Seems like there’s an injury every year.
|
12:09 |
What do you see as the Mets’ biggest needs this offseason? |
12:09 |
: Replacing Yoenis.
|
12:09 |
Missed your chat last Thursday because I was in OCHO RIOS, JAMAICA #YAHMON!!!!!!!!! Seriously, how sweet is that?! |
12:09 |
|
12:10 |
:
|
12:10 |
If you were to assign blame to certain individuals or groups of players for the Nats’ utter collapse, who would get it, and how much blame would they get? Does it go to Matt Williams for bad managing? Mike Rizzo for messing with team chemistry with the Papelbon trade? Drew Storen for collapsing after being (wrongly?) removed from the closer role? The star players who bombed and wasted Bryce Harper’s MVP type season? The fans for leaving Monday’s game early? |
12:12 |
: Rendon’s legs, Werth’s age, Strasburg’s everything, Williams’ managing, Rizzo misidentifying best way to solve needs. Roughly that order.
|
12:12 |
Three straight second place finishes, and my starting pitching right is killing me…I was tied for first 6 days ago and I’m down six now thanks to Harvey, Cole, Sale, Hamels, Lynn, McHugh. Why am i cursed?? WHYYYYYYY |
12:12 |
: We know what you did last summer.
|
12:12 |
Is Arrieta’s win total, no-hitter and feel-good story enough to get him past Claytone/Grienke for the NL CY? |
12:13 |
: I don’t think teammates cannibalize votes for Cy like they do for MVP, so no.
|
12:13 |
pedroia, seager, springer, choo, peralta. if you had to eliminate 2 of these guys who would it be? |
12:14 |
: I’m looking at a Pedroia / Choo situation myself. Choo has been really usable against righties, too. But I think ti’s Choo and Peralta for me.
|
12:14 |
Marcus Stroman pitches on Saturday. Oboy oboy |
12:14 |
: oboyoboyoboyoboyo
|
12:14 |
Chris Colabello?!?!? What;s the deal with THAT guy?!?!?! |
12:15 |
: Definite swing change situation there, as he started working with Bobby Tewksbary, but I don’t know about that BABIP, it’s just too high. And he’s an old guy.
|
12:15 |
Stroman earned his bachelor’s degree from Duke while on rehab. Isn’t that awesome? I mean other than the Duke thing. |
12:15 |
: The article by Lindbergh on the technical brostrap he wore at Duke while rehabbing also awesome.
|
12:15 |
Alright Eno I hate to put you through this painful exercise, but my dynasty (keep forever) league roster is in a crunch and I need to make a cut or two. Could you rank your preference of Ivan Nova, Wily Peralta, Mike Bolsinger and Shane Greene? Many thanks in advance– also doing much better since last week! |
12:17 |
: Peralta, Bolsinger. Greene still has a chance of having a starter’s arsenal, and injury gives him an excuse. Nova > Bolsinger since the both fastball/curve guys and Nova has like three MPH.
|
12:17 |
Any idea why the Dodgers’ odds of reaching the World Series are 20%? The next closest are the Blue Jays, Royals, and Astros (12.5, 12.0, 11.0% resp.). That’s quite a gap! |
12:17 |
: WAR loves that team.
|
12:17 |
JUNG HO KANG! |
12:17 |
: THE KANG SHOW
|
12:17 |
I’ve heard numerous times that “noise” is the most likely explanation for players who perform significantly better on the road or at home throughout a season. But there have to be some exceptions right? One prime example, Drew Hutchison is currently on pace to be have the biggest difference in home vs. road ERA in the history of baseball. |
12:17 |
: Yeah park effects have to be considered.
|
12:18 |
Do you think the Cubs will keep Bryant at 3rd for much longer? |
12:18 |
: With Schwarber and Soler, yeah I think they keep running him out there for a while.
|
12:18 |
How scared should I be of starting Nelson in Pitt? It’s a deep league and I need those innings from somewhere, but not if it’s 4 innings of clobber time. |
12:18 |
: I’d do it. He’s been good, and I think he’s really just figured out how to better use his new arsenal.
|
12:18 |
The mets amiright? Tuesday night I went through the whole range of emotions in the bottom 6 thru to 7 from “here we go again, the mets are blowing it, season over” to “holy shit, i cant believe this is real, the nats are done.” yesterday was just icing. still, basically cant count on harvey at this point, so how disappointed are we going to be? |
12:19 |
: DeGrom, Thor (though how many innings does HE have), Matz/Colon — still an awesome postseason rotation. And Grandy/Wright/Cespedes/TDA proving to be a good basis for a lineup.
|
12:20 |
|
12:20 |
In your opinion, how important is “playing on a playoff team” to you for the MVP? |
12:20 |
: 2%?
|
12:20 |
Hey Eno! Two things: 1) I think Sip of Sunshine is the best beer I’ve ever had, is that crazy? 2) Faced with an even tougher decision: I can only keep one of Springer or Votto for next year. Note that walks is a category in addition to traditionals! |
12:21 |
: 1) It’s so so so so so so good. 2) I think this is a great time to trade Votto.
|
12:21 |
What’s wrong with YOLO? |
12:21 |
: I think the level of irony is key.
|
12:21 |
i think the anger about the harvey situation is not that he is concerned about his career, he should be and thats understandable. its about how much of a dick he had been regarding his recovery (bitching about not being able to pitch last september, bitching every time the team went to a 6-man or tried to skip his starts) to last week when he was like um, “yeah its always been 180, i hired an agent to prolong my career” bullshit. he is a hypocrite. thats the real issue here. dont bitch and moan in june about missing a start and then come september be like syke! |
12:22 |
: Yes. I like that he’s advocating for himself, and his agent should too. But wow the crap about the extra day, and skipping a start, come on now dude.
|
12:22 |
Say you’re the gm of a team with openings at manager, hitting coach, and pitching coach. Who are your top choices for each? |
12:22 |
: Joe Maddon, Dave Hudgens, Dan Warthen.
|
12:22 |
given Kangs success, Parks winning bid will definitely be higher than kangs, but do you think itll be so much higher that it will be out of the pirates price range? also, does it haave to go to the highest bid? Say Park says hey Nexxon, i really want to play for the pirates and with Kang, as long is the Pirates bid is close could you please pick them? |
12:23 |
: I don’t think the players can talk to the teams like that, at least it doesn’t happen that way in Japan. And given position/glove/platoon splits, I don’ think it’s actually so given that Park’s bid is higher.
|
12:23 |
I don’t trust Beltre. I kind of don’t trust Turner. Drop one of them for Baez? H2H playoffs. |
12:23 |
: Don’t drop Beltre, he’s getting healthy.
|
12:23 |
I know you aren’t a pumpkin guy, but favorite beers for this time of year? Do you host an Enotoberfest? |
12:24 |
: Harvest / Wet Hop IPA FTW
|
12:24 |
A genie shows up and tells you that he can get you an insta-book deal on anything non-baseball. Then, after you pick, he’s like, that’s silly you can have a baseball book too. What are your books on, and do you try to engage the genie about a third wish? If so, turn to p. 27. |
12:24 |
: I got plans and I hope I don’t need a genie.
|
12:24 |
im scared of the straw market in Ocho – everyone is so pushy… i dont like haggling |
12:25 |
: Yeah, haggling is intense in Jamaica. Born there, lived there for years, visited for decades, still hated that aspect.
|
12:25 |
gattis hands are kinda gnarly |
12:25 |
: Like a physical representation of the ugly tree.
|
12:25 |
No love for the Lindor? Sano and Correa get all of the credit, but the little guy is just as good. Dude can rake. |
12:26 |
: I still think he’s overachieving with the bat, hits a lot of grounders to have this sort of power. But yes, he’s hot sauce.
|
12:26 |
i just don’t like sours. there i said it. |
12:27 |
: They get rated so highly because people like you have one and then don’t have any more, I think. it’s fine! My German mother calls them vinegar.
|
12:27 |
Storen didn’t collapse after the Papelbon trade, he collapsed 5 scoreless appearances later. |
12:28 |
: Yeah and if leverage stuff can be believed at all, he’s significantly worse in high leverage situations, so he should have gotten better, unless by moving out of closer’s role, he actually ended up in higher leverage situations. I’m not sure it was the right move exactly — a Clippard type might have been just as good without any waves — but almost every contender buys a reliever at the deadline, it’s not a big deal.
|
12:29 |
Interesting about Warren. Do you think any other RPs can become decent SPs next year? John Sickels likes Logan Verrett. |
12:30 |
: I have to give up on Randall Delgado I guess. Verrett, I want to see what his velocity is like actually starting instead of spot starting. If he’s under 90… the change is good by movement, the slider is his out pitch, but velocity matters a bit.
|
12:30 |
Talk to me about J.A Happ. |
12:31 |
: The Bucs have him throwing his good pitches more and his bad pitches less! I think it really could be that simple. Also, possible that throwing his good pitch (rising four-seamer) more is helping his command. That’s a big Pirate thing too, as Cole told me.
|
12:31 |
So where do you draft Cespedes next year? |
12:32 |
: He’s going to be 30 and coming off a career year. I’d rather pay for .275/30 than .300/35, which means I probably won’t have a ton of shares except for my keeper ones.
|
12:32 |
:
|
12:33 |
Drew Hutchison lost last night. Will this take away from his cy-young caliber season? I mean, look at that win-loss record!!! |
12:33 |
MVP voting except the v stands for “vexing |
12:33 |
I’d also like to take this opportunity to lay the blame on me getting bounced in the first round at the feet of Johnny Cueto. |
12:33 |
: Late lude dudes.
|
12:33 |
Brewing a Red IPA right now. Told my co-workers we’re bumping whatever music Eno picks in the brewhouse today. Cheers! |
12:33 |
: Oh hold on then let’s get this one in here.
|
12:34 |
: New Battles
|
12:34 |
:
|
12:34 |
Raisel Iglesias – is Sunday his last start? |
12:34 |
: Team says no well maybe well we’re watching him but we’ll see maybe. You figure that one out.
|
12:34 |
If ratios are all that matter: which 3 from Romo, Kela, Kelley, Capps, Robles, Colome, Stroman, Burnett? Any other good to elite ratio guys (SP or RP) that might be on my wire? |
12:34 |
: Kela, Capps, Romo/Stroman
|
12:35 |
My first act as GM would be to establish my team’s space scouting program. Sure, low odds of anything resulting from that, but if they did, my team would have ALIENS! |
12:35 |
Gird your loins, man! The H2H playoffs are nigh! Honestly though I’ve just conditioned myself to accept whatever happens, total crapshoot. I built this goddamn team ON ROCK N ROLL |
12:35 |
AMARO IS GONE! HOLY F@!##@$#@!!!!!! OOOOH SAY CAN YOU SEEEEE BY THE DAWNS EARLLYYYYY SUCK IT AMAROOOOOO |
12:36 |
: okay we started late but then we whipped out the caps lock so
|
12:36 |
Stroman earned a degree from Duke in, like, six months? Wow! |
12:36 |
: Well, he went there undergrad so he had a head start.
|
12:36 |
What are we expecting from Stroman? Starting him @ NYY Saturday? |
12:36 |
: I’d roster, but that’s a hell of a matchup, so I’d sit unless deep league.
|
12:36 |
Did you see the FG article on waiver wire speed? What happened to being able to pick up steals for free? |
12:37 |
: yeah Sporer did a good one. I think steals are just way down across baseball. If you take out two or three standout guys… Look at this way: TWO 20/20 guys this year. Two.
|
12:37 |
Who’s the smartest player you’ve ever interviewed? Baseball intelligence or General. |
12:37 |
: Joey Votto, John Jaso, Sean Doolittle, Javier Lopez, Trevor Bauer.
|
12:38 |
Odor or Baez for the next 2 weeks? Russell, Gyorko, or Pedroia better options? OPS counts |
12:38 |
: hODOR
|
12:39 |
Do the BBWAA care that Jake Arrieta’s FIP is better than Greinke’s, and that Greinke is top-2 in MLB in lob%, babip, hr/fb%? |
12:39 |
: Probably not, and also: I’m not sure how important those things should be for an award anyway. Awards are about what actually happened, not necessarily what should have happened.
|
12:39 |
Heading to Bell’s funvitational Saturday, what are your (brief) tips for enjoying a festival with so much selection? |
12:40 |
: Start REAL slow. Try some goses, some pilsners, saisons. Throw anything out that you don’t like. You’ll get there, and this way, you’ll have the best on the way there.
|
12:40 |
How are you evaluating Rendon as a keeper? His bat seems to finally be coming around, but I’m nervous he’s destined to miss significant time every year. Trying to choose between him, EE, and CGomez as my fourth keeper (def keeping Correa, Springer, and Pederson). |
12:41 |
: Gomez injury concerns put him third for me in that group. EE vs Rendon is tough because EE looking a bit older, but I’ll take the big bat and try to get Rendon back in draft.
|
12:41 |
i just learned that hops and cannabis come from the same family tree, Cannabaceae. no wonder i love an IPA after a smoke. i was floored by this natural “pairing”. any recommendations that might fill this profile (IPA that is)? (something somewhat widely available per chance) |
12:42 |
: Knee Deep Breaking Bud? There are a few out there that smell very cannabis-like but I forget which ones now. Look for ‘floral’ in the description, IMO.
|
12:42 |
So I don’t think for a second that Cespedes should be the MVP (as Keith Law pointed out on twitter, Yo’s line with the Mets is about the same as Harper’s line on the season). However, I am amazed at how forcefully he’s pushed the Mets over the win curve. He took the roster spot of sub-replacement guys and put up nearly 3 WAR. That is a hell of a lot of value to his team. May not be Most Valuable, but certainly Very Valuable. |
12:43 |
: Yeah and to Johnny5’s point about that being worth money on top of on-the-field production, it certainly tips the scales. I tried to look at Barry Zito in terms of ‘championship shares’ so that I could give him more value for some seminal postseason outings, but it was really tough to figure out, even with WPA. So I don’t think, even if Fulmer turns into a (semi-injured) #2 for the Tigers, that the Mets will rue the trade too much.
|
12:44 |
: Also, don’t forget that Wright and TDA returned around the same time.
|
12:44 |
Hey Eno, love the chats. Long-time reader. Just wanted to get your thoughts on keeping Votto at $21 in an OPS league. Seems like a steal but I know 1B is so deep. Just wanted an expert opinion, thanks! |
12:44 |
: Yeah you do that. Even in lower powered years his OBP floats that OPS.
|
12:44 |
The problem is MVP should be settled whether it is “BEst” or “Most valuable” |
12:45 |
: Best, for me, is most valuable.
|
12:45 |
Does Kang make you moist? Kang should make you moist. |
12:45 |
: moist
|
12:46 |
Hey Eno, what player valuation method do you use for fantasy? Z-scores? SGP? PVM? Reasons why? |
12:47 |
: I use z-scores for redraft leagues in which the owners change from year to year, because a universal approach seems right. I think SGP is interesting for keeper leagues and redrafts where the owners are mostly the same every year, though, because it asks the question: what is this stat worth in this league.
|
12:47 |
I’m going to miss Daniel Murphy. He’s the MBP where B stands for “bemused”. |
12:47 |
but is Kang the Moist Valuable? |
12:48 |
Brief tips = boxer |
12:48 |
The award isn’t the Very Valuable Player award |
12:48 |
And the winner of this year’s NL very valuable player award is…a tie between a number of quite good players! |
12:48 |
DANK |
12:48 |
what pitcher stat(s) tell(s) you what “actually” happened? |
12:48 |
: RA9WAR?
|
12:48 |
Oh course Stanton is going to miss RoS. Soler is out now too in H2H playoffs. |
12:48 |
: Most likely.
|
12:49 |
It’s amazing how the FLores thing turned around the Mets season. That’s a 30 for 30 that practically writes itself. |
12:49 |
: Oh yeah totally. Still don’t think he’s a shortstop, and not sure he’s got much upside left in his bat.
|
12:49 |
Player A – 3.6 BB%, 12.6 K%, .155 ISO, .273 BABIP Player B – 4.2 BB%, 14.3 K%, .096 ISO, .365 BABIP |
12:49 |
player A is wilmer flores, player B is xander bogaerts |
12:49 |
: And yet I take XB a million times over WF. A million.
|
12:50 |
most valuable is the guy you pay 4 million to carry a 201 wRC+. if you’re going to bring in something crazy like making the playoffs to the argument, then why not bring in relative salary vs. output |
12:50 |
: I like it.
|
12:50 |
What is SGP? |
12:50 |
: Standard Gains Points. Google Jeff Zimmerman and SGP, and Zach Sanders and fVarz.
|
12:50 |
“Evan Gattis Is Almost Unrecognizable” sullivan throwing shade after you posted that callous pic |
12:51 |
: oh crap there goes the rest of my interview with Gattis. Guess I’ll just write up the no batting gloves piece then.
|
12:51 |
I’ve played the Eno Top 10 Bob Marley playlist for people. They really like it for not being a “Greatest Hits” list. Trying to then explain to them who Eno Sarris is gets a little more convoluted…. |
12:51 |
: And someone said I was famous. Lol.
|
12:51 |
player A .302 batting average. player B .288 batting average. guess who they are! |
12:52 |
The decline of FG comment quality surely means Appelman is making $$$ as the site attracts new readership. Are you seeing any of that? |
12:52 |
: I’m knee deep in my comments so I think mostly the nonsense stays away.
|
12:52 |
do you find you get the same respect in the clubhouse as other more traditional reporter types? |
12:52 |
: No, but once we get going there’s usually a moment where things change.
|
12:52 |
RP becoming decent SPs next year? LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT ROBERTO OSUNA MY FRIEND. |
12:53 |
: Yes that’s a great one. Will have to watch what they say about his innings.
|
12:53 |
do you like lagunitas? thoughts on them selling 50%? |
12:53 |
: I do like Lagunitas, and I’m glad they kept 50%, and I’m glad that it was Heineken and not ABI.
|
12:53 |
My knowledge of Jamaica comes from tourist ads, Wikipedia, and Ian Fleming. |
12:54 |
: It’s… very different than that.
|
12:54 |
Who’s most likely to help my flailing staff down the stretch: Stroman, Happ, Rodon, McHugh, Matz, Hammel, Fiers, Iglesias |
12:54 |
: Stroman. Matz. McHugh.
|
12:54 |
Brandon Crawford has been banged up so might not be usable for me during my H2H points league playoffs. What replacement do you like out of Baez, Russell, A. Escobar, Flores, Kang? Yes, all of these available. |
12:55 |
: Kang if you can keep Crawford around, since he doesn’t play every day.
|
12:55 |
These pitchers are available in my dynasty league: CAnderson, Ray, Chi Chi, Erasmo, Medlen, Hutchison. Should I grab any of them (likely in place of KHendricks)? |
12:55 |
: Medlen.
|
12:55 |
Right rank for next week? Anderson vCOL(Rusin), Tomlin vKC (Volquez), Matz vNYY (Pineda) |
12:55 |
: Matz above Tomlin, and if you can sit him for that start, Matz RoS.
|
12:55 |
ENO! Your wisdom is needed. Can you rank for me ROS: Jackie Bradley Jr, Curtis Granderson, Dexter Fowler, and Corey Dickerson…need to make a move! I also just dropped Kipnis for Panik. How dumb was that?!? |
12:55 |
: JBJ is the dropper for me. (oof)
|
12:56 |
i’m in first and i need to improve my ERA. do i cut cmart? |
12:56 |
: no
|
12:56 |
My knowledge of Jamaica comes from that time my dad let me watch The Harder They Come when I was 11. |
12:56 |
: Closer
|
12:56 |
I’m looking at you, Eno Sarris. |
12:56 |
What have I become My sweetest friend Everyone I know goes away In the end And you could have it all My empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt |
12:56 |
KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANG |
12:57 |
you’d take XB over flores in real life or fantasy? I understand the former but not the latter |
12:57 |
: I’d take XB over Flores in real life. I’d take Xander over Wilmer in a keeper, too. because
|
12:57 |
Do you think Xander Bogaerts can develop in-game power to match the batting practice and scouting reports of monster power? His swing/approach looks like he’s wearing a roller skate on his back foot, and thus doesn’t achieve the leverage needed to lift balls. He’s already having an issue of too many groundballs in his career. |
12:57 |
: I do think he will fix this. Batters generally hit more fly balls as they age, and he’s shown a better swing before.
|
12:58 |
When will sabermetricians begin to look into the real questions, like what the hell is the philly fanatic |
12:58 |
: Product of the alien scouting service.
|
12:59 |
Hope I’m not too late to the party. Could you please rank the sour sisters from Goose Island? My birthday is a couple of weeks away and I’m thinking of splurging for a bottle. |
12:59 |
: Halia, Juliette
|
12:59 |
Is the Astro’s mascot a product of Wally and the Fanatic making sexy time? |
12:59 |
: um
|
1:00 |
I’ve heard of the forkball, but does anyone throw a sporkball? |
1:00 |
: Coello?
|
1:00 |
Is this a year of unexpected variance, or is this the year that proprietary analysis beat public analysis to the point that our projections were not suited to the state of play? Does seem like a lot of successful teams are doing things once thought to be verboten. |
1:01 |
: The problem with verboten things is that you have to see them happen year after year to really believe them. But obviously in-house projections are going to be better than ours. For example, they have minor league trackman numbers on most guys…. What I wouldn’t give for that.
|
1:02 |
New Belegium just branched out here in Pittsburgh. Heard good things from a friend that just moved to Colorado. Thoughts on Ranger? Anything else i should try? |
1:02 |
: I’d look past their flagship beers and try out their La Terroir sours and rarer stuff. Not a big fan of their IPAs, ambers and pales.

We’re skipping the game on Saturday to go to a beer festival here in DC. Not only do you have to pay $35 to get in the door, once you’re in pours of the good stuff are 8-12 for a 6oz! We don’t mind 6oz — can spread our livers around many tastings — but that’s some outrageous pricing. |
1:03 |
: Wait you pay at door and then pay more that sucks!
|
1:03 |
How long before I become Jacob Degrom? |
1:03 |
: never
|
1:03 |
How do you feel about teams inventing a mascot that has nothing to do with their names? I’m mostly thinking of the Bay Area teams, I guess Mr. Met, probably others. Also, can we revive the call to change Cleveland’s name to the Spiders? Think of that terrifying mascot! |
1:04 |
: yes to Spider. But I can’t hate on Lou Seal, I mean it’s a gender ambiguous seal! that’s awesome.
|
1:04 |
all my knowledge about Jamaica comes from “cool runnings” |
1:05 |
: colder
|
1:05 |
Ima let you finish, but Madame Rose is the best GI sister OF ALL TIME. |
1:05 |
: haven’t had!
|
1:05 |
In what situation do you have wine instead of beer (where both are available) |
1:05 |
: The beer is truly horrid. Like a Fat Tire.
|
1:05 |
New Belgium: Le Terroir or gtfo |
1:05 |
: yes
|
1:05 |
Can someone please invent a Segway that can travel up and down stairs? I’m sick of using the escalator in the mall. |
1:05 |
: Too much effort.
|
1:05 |
Sorry that wasn’t a baseball question but a science question. I’ve been taking Degrom transformation serum for 8 months now, do you know how much longer until it takes effect? |
1:05 |
: lol
|
1:07 |
What’s the first truly cyborg-esque enhancement to a baseball player? Or has it already happened? Lasik? |
1:07 |
: rubber ligaments would actually get my approval
|
1:07 |
Mr. Met has everything to do with the team’s name. They’re called the Mets, duh. |
1:07 |
mr met was the first mascot snarfle! and he is clearly a metropolitan… how dare you lump him in with other mascots |
1:07 |
![]() |
1:08 |
@snarfle the A’s elephant is a reference to a john mcgraw comment about Connie Mack’s As. its relevant to the teams history |
1:08 |
how could anyone hate the A’s elephant even if it has nothing to do with athletics? |
1:08 |
More like Flat Tire amirite |
1:08 |
Wait I meant to log out |
1:08 |
Did you ever think how an escalator is like a segway for steps |
1:08 |
AMARO IS AVAILABLE? WHERE’S MY MOBILE PHONE? |
1:08 |
thank god. i thought i was weird for not liking fat tire, when in fact i am actually a beer god! |

1:08 |
While Oscare Pistorius is in jail, you think he should lend his legs to Tiexera? |
1:08 |
: Well done guys
|
1:09 |
I commish a 2 year old 14 team dynasty league that has k and k/9 as cats. This year it looks like all the top 7/8 teams are going to hit their innings max (1450) which basically means it’s the same cat. My solution is to change k/9 to bb/9. Good idea to change scoring in a 2 year old dynasty league like that? |
1:09 |
: Yeah doubling up is a little silly, I think that’s okay.
|
1:10 |
All my knowledge of Jamaica comes from Eno Sarris chats. |
1:10 |
: closer still
|
1:11 |
What do we make of Trayce Thompson’s best Alex Rios impersonation. |
1:12 |
: Here’s the only thing I’m looking at: swinging strike rate. Suggests he can maybe have a 20% strikeout rate, which is WAY better than projections say he will do. He did really cut his strikeout rate in Triple -A this year, but as a 24-year-old doing it for the second time. I’d be skeptical but I like the whiff rate.
|
1:12 |
Hey man!!!!! I like to write erotic Hitler fan-fiction in the chat fields of Yahoo drafts. Do I need help? |
1:13 |
: this. actually. happened.
|
1:13 |
Over/under: my swizzle or my sizzle? |
1:13 |
: I just had sausage so sizzle
|
1:13 |
: This is a strange Stone Roses track! great stuff
|
1:14 |
:
|
1:14 |
Swinging strike rate signals ability to make contact, is that right? |
1:15 |
: It’s also a per-pitch metric, which is always four times faster to stabilize than per-plate appearance metrics, by the nature of plate appearances and pitches.
|
1:15 |
Did you ever beat Fester’s Quest? |
1:15 |
: No but most of the King’s and Space Quests.
|
1:15 |
Is Duda healthy enough to use in H2H playoffs? |
1:15 |
: Yes
|
1:16 |
Who is Vince Cully? |
1:16 |
: Danas Cully’s brother.
|
1:16 |
The Duda Bides |
1:16 |
His time |
1:16 |
Can we get the band Trio to redo “Da Da Da” with “Du da da”? I mean, if they aren’t busy. |
1:17 |
: I should tell Duda what sort of things he inspires because dude is so mellow and normal in a clubhouse full of nonsense.
|
1:17 |
Who do you think has a better chance of holds or saves next year: Pomeranz, McAllister, or May? |
1:17 |
: Pomeranz for saves but doubt it for any of them really. May for setup man.
|
1:18 |
What is outlawed first: Carter Capps jump-pitch, or Cyborg/Alien players? |
1:18 |
: I don’t think there’s any momentum on the Capps thing, so we’ll have to wait for the first elbow ligament replacement with non-human parts to see about the second.
|
1:19 |
Go ahead. Drop me. I don’t care anymore. I DON’T CARE ANYMORE TYLER. |
1:19 |
: listen to the man
|
1:19 |
IT’S A DRAG GODDAMNIT! |
1:19 |
: the way you dress in your free time is no concern to us, man.
|
1:19 |
Doolittle just got bid up to $6 in dynasty league ($217 cap, he goes up $2 next year). Worth me bidding up to 7? He gonna be a pretty sure-fire closer next year? |
1:20 |
: $9 for Doolittle next year, huh? That’s borderline for me, but if your other sure-fire closers go for $15-20, then yes.
|
1:20 |
Gonna get me some HOLDS next year |
1:20 |
: Unless you spend the year on the DL again.
|
1:20 |
Are you talking about The Mets’ clubhouse, or this weekly chat nonsense? |
1:20 |
: Clubhouse because this nonsense is great nonsense here.
|
1:21 |
Turns out I’m weird for liking Fat Tire… maybe because it was one of the first non-bud/coors beers I had access to? And now that I can’t get it where I live I only have those early memories and the very occasional airport beer? |
1:22 |
: I often worry that my love for reggae is this way. I mean, it’s slightly repetitive music that’s kind of R&Bish… sometimes I laugh at myself. But when I hear it, I’m immediately on the front porch of my mom’s restaurant in Jamaica, cool breeze coming up from the beach, D&G champagne soda pop in my hand.
|
1:22 |
Is there any way SanOHMYGOD is snaking the ALROY fro Correa? |
1:22 |
: Correa slowing down a bit, but I think he’s built up enough of a lead.
|
1:22 |
This nonsense is terrible nonsense. |
1:23 |
: We’ve done our job here, people.
|
1:23 |
blue moon is my favorite beer cuz its not one of those light beers. it actually has flavor and is a pretty good craft beer |
1:23 |
: I’ll take it over Fat Tire for sure.
|
1:23 |
Re: the MVP. We have game odds down to the plate appearance, right? Why not calculate each players’ ability to increase their team’s win percentage in each game, throughout the course of the season, and make an argument for MVP that way? Is it just that it would take a super long time and leave us with the same general candidates? |
1:23 |
: You mean WPA? Yeah you could use WPA.
|
1:24 |
: Almost time to
|
1:24 |
:
|
1:24 |
btw blue moon is icky |
1:24 |
: damn you
|
1:24 |
Are you a believer in Derek Holland’s resurgence? |
1:25 |
: Like right now? Sure. But long term? Not really. Change still sucks, and will he be this good at 92? 91?
|
1:25 |
WPA gives you Rizzo and Donaldson as your MVPs as of today |
1:25 |
: I shrug. I mean, I think it’s Harper, but Rizzo has had a great season too.
|
1:26 |
“it’s slightly repetitive music that’s kind of R&Bish” what’s wrong with either of these things? |
1:26 |
: Well I don’t love R&B that much if we’re talking the crooning sort. But repetitive, sure, lots of music is repetitive.
|
1:27 |
You know what music is not repetitive? My nephew on the recorder. |
1:27 |
: In a bad way, I’m sure.
|
1:27 |
Any beerspots in San Mateo? |
1:27 |
: Can you get to Ale Arsenal in San Carlos? It’s awesome and has a beer fridge for takeaway.
|
1:28 |
All recorders are bad. At least the slide whistle can be used hilariously on occasion. |
1:28 |
Re: RnB, maybe you’d enjoy Miguel and The-Dream |
1:28 |
The biggest change in my musical habits the last 5 years has been my increasing love for R&B. I can listen to Charles Bradley all day every day. |
1:28 |
Naw, Rotolando’s nephew is like the Miles Davis of recorders. Dude basically owned the last recital. |
1:28 |
: last one great one
|
1:28 |
Recorder free jazz, just remove my ears |
1:29 |
what beers you want to try/do you like from washington? |
1:30 |
: Haven’t had any… Blue Jacket. Is that right? Haven’t had much DC other than maybe Wings.
|
1:30 |
(sniffle) i mean… (sniff) at least keep me in dynasty… (snurff) right? (shnulp) RIGHT?!?! |
1:30 |
: Listen Robbie I feel bad but… no
|
1:30 |
I find it a real snooze when MVP discussion boils down to “who has the most WAR”? I can always look at those leaderboards, MVP should be more than that. |
1:32 |
: Definitely not when it comes to .1 WAR, but I’d rather they came from the same groupings. If we don’t talk numbers, though, what are we talking? Narrative? Do you like the “Harper kept his team afloat when everyone died around him” narrative more than “Rizzo led the (great) youngsters to the promised land?” No? You won’t be alone, but I don’t that this conversation is much better than the one that started with numbers.
|
1:32 |
buddy is bringing me a Hopzilla for the pirates game tonight, ever had it? also where can i get the Ninja vs Unicorn i saw on here a couple weeks ago in the pittsburgh area???? |
1:33 |
: Any Lawson’s is good beer, I’m guessing. Pipeworks you probably have to trade for, but now it’s in cans so maybe easier to get.
|
1:33 |
Do you think I should buy an RV and become a combination Uber/AirBNB? |
1:33 |
: Probably make more money than I do.
|
1:34 |
Good DC brews = DC Brau Solar Abyss, Wings; most things from Right Proper; Ocelot IPAs. And no, we aren’t drinking these after every game and playing hungover the next day; we’re drinking them before every game! |
1:34 |
: Haven’t had anything Ocelot.
|
1:34 |
Ubnb |
1:34 |
pick 1 for RoS – Severino, Matz, McCuller, Burnett |
1:34 |
: Definitely from top three. I think I take Matz because of schedule and league.
|
1:35 |
Yo Eno! What are a few of your favorite pitches? |
1:36 |
: Felix change, Dickey knuckler, Carlos Martinez sinker, Despaigne eephus, Gray curve…
|
1:36 |
Not sure that I have a great answer for the alternative, but just balk at idea that MVP should follow WAR leaderboards to a T. Maybe consider WAR + WPA + some “narrative”? Narrative is no small part of the fun, tbh: we follow these like humans! Not giving player x the MVP despite a higher WAR doesn’t make that WAR leaderboard go away, but maybe it gives someone who was important in a less tangible way a note that keeps that exciting season relevant. |
1:38 |
: Sure, so we’re still talking Rizzo vs Harper, mostly I think. But four wins is a tall mountain for me. Even Yoenis to Harper is two wins…
|
1:38 |
any beers in washington (state) you like/want to try? |
1:39 |
: YES! Elysian Space Dust. Other beers, before ABI kilsl them. Fremont. Georgetown. Can’t get those.
|
1:39 |
” a “tart saison,” and an “aromatic pale ale.” That’s pretty uninspiring — what brews would you offer if you opened a brewery? |
1:40 |
: Yeah man, I didn’t want to be harsh but it’s not what I would do. Fieldworks’ fruity drinkable pales would be on my menu, plus something like my boys at Discretion and their carmelized milk stout that tastes like a milky way, plus a rare barrel-like dark raspberry sour, and maybe something from my dude at 32North down in San Diego, he has a blackberry seawater gose.
|
1:41 |
Not necessarily meaning to have a specific conversation re: this year’s races, just a general framework of how to think about it. Harper has both the numbers, the team-specific “value” (given that he’s the only reason they’re remotely in the race), and story (22-yo with staggering offensive line). Donaldson also good numbers + narrative in AL. |
1:42 |
: Donaldson pretty much lock solid case right now, you right. Maybe Harper is too, but we’ll see some debate I guess. I’m willing to hear it if we’re talking two guys that are at least within a win or two. I guess I might have more of an ear for Yoenis than many, it’s a compelling story and there are still some games left.
|
1:42 |
space dust is outstanding. Been getting into saisons lately. can you point me to some good ones that are somewhat widely available? |
1:45 |
: Saison Dupont is the beer that got me into craft again. Saison-Brett by Boulevard is amazing. Seizoen Bretta by Logsdon should be available to you. Anchorage Arctic Saison is pretty good. Prairie Hop. Everything form Anchorage is kind of a saison…
|
1:45 |
“I guess I might have more of an ear for Yoenis than many” Mets homer I bet you even like that monstrosity of a mascot they have |
1:46 |
: Sometimes I can’t even tell when people are serious any more. Mr. Met is kind of awesome, read Dayn Perry on him about to have sex. And Yoenis is second in the NL in position player WAR so it’s not like I said that Brandon Belt should win.
|
1:47 |
rip in peace mr. met #goodnightsweetprince |
1:47 |
space dust sounds like a new drug kids in high school are using |
1:47 |
Logsdon Seizoen best I’ve ever had |
1:47 |
Best brewery models in 2015 imo: distribute and focus, building a rep in your specialty (thinking Cascade, de Garde, etc.); brewpub/local kegs-only and constantly make new things with a consistent vibe (Tired Hands comes immediately to mind). |
1:48 |
: The local brewpub is and will always be the high floor approach. People go to bad local brewpubs because they are local! Rep is specialty is great way to distribute, though, and starting as a brewpub is a good high-floor way to find that thing you’re best at in order to cautiously distribute.

Yo dude. I think your hair is cool and I’m sorry about that one time. We cool? Best wishes, Hoz |
1:48 |
I liked the article about the futility of trying to generate backspin w a downward chop. The next thing you should ask the players is whether they think their grip on the bat at the moment of impact makes a difference in how far the ball travels. It actually doesn’t! Ask Alan Nathan. But it’s so counterintuitive, at least to me, that I wondered what ballplayers think. You should definitely ask Todd Frazier if you get the chance. |
1:48 |
: Interesting!
|
1:48 |
: Okay I gotta go.
|
1:49 |
: Gotta go do stuff.
|
1:49 |
: It’s been fun, see you guys next week!
|
1:49 |
i wrote so much inane crap for you to post. |
1:49 |
the only stats I care about for MVP voting are game-winning RBIs and Wins |
With a phone full of pictures of pitchers' fingers, strange beers, and his two toddler sons, Eno Sarris can be found at the ballpark or a brewery most days. Read him here, writing about the A's or Giants at The Athletic, or about beer at October. Follow him on Twitter @enosarris if you can handle the sandwiches and inanity.
I guess the new Beirut album will arrive before Blake Snell does!
