FanGraphs After Dark Chat – 4/29/14

5:44
Paul Swydan: Hi everybody! Jeff and I will be here at 9 pm ET to nerd it up and/or down with you. In the meantime, please enjoy this wide array of polls. And by wide array, I mean four polls that cover two topics.

See you soon!

9:00
Paul Swydan: OK, let’s light this candle!

9:01
Comment From Evil Fredi Gonzalez
Looks like we’re going against one of the best pitchers in baseball tonight. Sounds like the time to throw out my backups who are all far worse both offensively AND defensively. They’ll never see it coming! MUAHAHAHAHAHA!

9:01
Paul Swydan: Mawahahahahahaha!

9:01
Comment From Shoeless Joe Jackson
Any chance Pete Rose is admitted to the HOF posthumously?

9:01
Paul Swydan: I suppose there’s always a chance, though I’m not holding my breath.

The Best of FanGraphs: April 21-25, 2014

If you missed the inaugural post of The Best Of FanGraphs, you can do so here. In case you don’t feel like clicking through though, here is how this post is structured:

We’ll pull from the whole FanGraphs family, picking 10-15 stories that we feel you really should read before the week draws to a close. The links are color coded — green for FanGraphs, burnt sienna for RotoGraphs, purple for NotGraphs, dark red for The Hardball Times and blue for Community. They are listed in this order as well in each day, just for the sake of consistency.

The Closer with the Full Repertoire

Just when you think he’s finally going to fade into oblivion, Daisuke Matsuzaka just saunters back into the picture. Once again, he’s with the New York Mets, but this time it’s in the brand new role of closer. Just one day after being mentioned by Mets manager Terry Collins as a potential closer candidate, Matsuzaka saved the first game of his career. Given his mix of pitches, it’s not a role that one would expect him to have.

FanGraphs After Dark Chat – 4/22/14

6:04
Paul Swydan: Hi everybody!

Jeff is off tonight, so I’ll be flying solo. So fill up the queue and we’ll talk some baseballs at 9 pm ET.

9:02
Paul Swydan: OK, let’s do this!

9:02
Comment From Matt
I just traded Xander Bogaerts, Michael Pineda for Mark Trumbo. We use R/HR/RBI/SB/OBP/Slugging….My HR/RBI are worst in league by a lot already and I have both Choo and Votto to offset OBP. Good trade?

9:03
Paul Swydan: I guess that depends on how much we should buy Pineda. And if it’s a dynasty league. If it’s a redraft league, I think you did a good job of filling needs. If it’s a dynasty league, I don’t like it very much. Esp w OBP as a category.

9:03
Comment From TheGoodPhight/David
What are the odds that Cliff Lee’s FA contract is the best large contract (100MM+) ever?

9:04
Paul Swydan: I think it’ll be up there. It’s definitely an area where I would like to see more research. IIRC, Manny Ramirez’s deal was pretty good. And A-Rod’s FIRST deal was more than worth it. I’m sure there are others. But Lee is definitely going to be up there if he keeps this up.

The Diamondbacks Still Can Reload

When the Diamondbacks won the National League West division in 2011, they looked like they had a pretty decent future. This week, things don’t look quite as rosy. According to our Playoff Odds page, only four teams have less of a shot at reaching the postseason as of this writing — the Astros, Twins, Cubs or Marlins. None of those teams were expected to contend for a playoff berth this season. The Dbacks were. Unless things change fast, they will not actually contend for a playoff spot, and then the question becomes how can the organization right the ship?

Since Jonah Keri had a great look over at Grantland at how we got to this point, and since I try to follow the mantra of Chris Tucker/Smokey and not bring up old ‘ish, I won’t waste your time repeating it. Here though, if you don’t feel like clicking through, is the money quote:

Paul Swydan: Ah, sports. Where, “you better some dirt on that injury, bro” is said by the same people that say, “oh, dude, totally wear that ski mask tonight, it’s FREEZING!”

9:02
Comment From Jake
Was offered Upton and Liriano for Braun…Good deal?

9:02
Paul Swydan: I like this deal, yes.

9:02
Paul Swydan: With the caveat that Braun’s thumb is OK. I guess Jeff knows that better than I do.

9:02
Jeff Zimmerman: Yes, Braun’s thumb injury is not going away

Young Relievers Lighting Up Leaderboards, Radar Guns

Perhaps we should be used to this by now. Just four years ago, Craig Kimbrel was just some guy who walked more than 18 percent of the batters he faced. Now, he’s Craig Kimbrel. In the same timeframe, Drew Storen went from talented rookie set-up man to closer on a suddenly not terrible Nationals team. In their wake, young relievers like Kenley Jansen, Kelvin Herrera, Trevor Rosenthal, Addison Reed and others have taken the baseball world by various degrees of storm. And there was this Aroldis Chapman guy, too.

This season has been no different. Seemingly anonymous relievers have been springing from the figurative woodwork to capture spots on the top of various reliever leaderboards, most notably K% and velocity. Let’s meet some of them, shall we?

5:49
Paul Swydan: Hi everybody!

Jeff and I will be here at 9 pm ET to answer all of your various baseball queries. So fill up the queue and we’ll see you then!

9:02
Paul Swydan: Hey people. I have a bowl of mint choc chip ice cream and some MLB.tv fired up. Lets do this.

9:02
Jeff Zimmerman: OK, I guess.

9:02
Comment From Darth Stout
So Brandon Belt. This is some kind of something.

9:03
Jeff Zimmerman: About time they let him play.

9:03
Paul Swydan: All spring I touted a breakout from Belt, and then I didn’t end up with him in the league where I could have because I had already landed Votto. Sad face.
