Establishing The Inside With Jake McGee

About half-way through May, something strange was going on in Jake McGee’s world. The 27-year-old reliever was giving up hits and home runs to left-handed hitters. For a lefty with 96 mph gas and a wicked slider, that was out of the norm. But, as most pitchers do over the course of the season, he made an adjustment and figured the problem out. If there ever was one to begin with.

Robert Coello’s Fastball Is Thankful For His Forkleball

Look at the numbers for Robert Coello’s third pitch and you might not get it. It’s a forkball. It gets a below-average swinging-strike rate for a breaking pitch. It’s a ball half the time. It looks flawed. But then you watch Coello pitch, and this happens.

Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 9/19/13

11:53
Eno Sarris: phew. here at noon! having some internet issues..

12:00
Eno Sarris: Okay so I know nothing about this artist for the lyrics of the day, and the clip I listened to actually quoted another artist for the first part (one that I like), but that makes this hard to google, and the name of the song is relevant today. So that’s why.

You can find some time to be someone
Like a valentine for a lonely soul
You can treat me like a fool
And hate-

Some love brings me down
Some love turns me round and round
and round and round
and round and round and round and round and round

Comment From AJT
Just wanted to say that I loved the Trout piece. Nice work!

12:01
Eno Sarris: I don’t think it was my best work actually. I wish I could have gotten him to open up more. But! I really do love the idea that Mike Trout is Joey Votto plus centerfield D and elite speed on the basepaths.

12:01
Comment From Matt
Ubaldo or Cole today?

12:01
Eno Sarris: I’m going with Cole. Houston can run into a few homers and Cole is the better pitcher right now.

Mike Trout on WAR

You won’t get Mike Trout to say he should win the Most Valuable Player award this year because his Wins Above Replacement total is higher than another player’s. But if you listen closely to him describing his game, you will hear the basic constructs for the argument that can be made in his favor. It’s a simple one.

The Ramifications of Possible Changes to the Posting System

According to David Lennon at Newsday, it looks like changes are coming to the posting system that allows Japanese clubs to, in effect, sell their players to American teams. Though this knowledge comes from anonymous sources, the alterations seem to fit an important facet of successful negotiations: there’s something in them for every party at the table.

Eno Sarris Baseball Chat – 9/12/13

Brandon McCarthy Wants to Change It Up

Brandon McCarthy has famously embraced sabermetrics before. Learning about ground balls and efficiency helped save his career. That doesn’t mean that the struggle to learn and improve doesn’t continue. And, after we talked last week, it seems the pitcher is running up on the limits of sabermetric research. Or at least, he is identifying places where execution trumps theory.
