Top Performers of the Dominican Winter League
The playoffs for the Dominican Winter League (DWL) have begun — and, as such, the regular-season stats for the players in said League are final.
Here are the top performers of the DWL, per SCOUT (a metric explained below, but which, briefly stated, uses regressed inputs to help make sense of small samples).
Best Hitter (Overall): Hector Luna
Hector Luna, who turns 33 in February, isn’t a player about whom one is compelled to think very often — although, to his credit, he’s been slightly better than replacement level in 800-plus major-league plate appearances with five teams since 2004. Also to his credit, he was excellent in the DWL, posting a 29:30 walk-to-strikeout ratio while hitting seven home runs in ca. 200 plate appearances.
Best Hitter (Prospects): Nelson Perez
A Cubs prospect signed out of the Dominican Republic about six years ago now, it appears, Nelson Perez has struck out more than four times as often as he’s walked in 2,000-plus minor-league plate appearances. By that measure, the now 25-year-old’s DWL has been a success: Perez posted a 29:28 walk-to-strikeout ratio this winter in 113 plate appearances. Credit to St. Louis outfield prospect Oscar Taveras, too, who’s four years younger than Perez and finished third overall among prospect-age hitters.
Best Pitcher (Overall): Erick Abreu
Originally a member of the Yankees organization, Erick Abreu has pitched in the Astros minor leagues since 2008. Also, he’s apparently nicknamed “Tortuga,” which is Spanish for “turtle.” In the DWL, he threw 31.2 innings over 21 appearances, recording 28 strikeouts against just eight walks. Per Baseball America, the 29-year-old right-hander is currently a free agent.
Best Pitcher (Starters): Kyler Newby
Originally taken by Arizona as a draft-and-follow in 2004, Kyler Newby has pitched in the minors since then, striking out 10.1 batters every nine innings over that span — although, largely in relief and hardly ever at Triple-A. In this case, all seven of Newby’s DWL appearances were made in a starting capacity, over which seven starts he posted a 37:11 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 31.0 innings. According to Orioles Nation, Newby throws mostly a fastball (at 87-90 mph) and slider (at 79-81 mph). He was signed by Oakland this offseason.
Totally Irrelevant Video: Rey Ordonez, Superstar Defender
Here’s video of former Mets shortstop Rey Ordonez — across which the author came while actually looking for footage of Hector Luna — video of Ordonez from 1999, during which season he was worth ca. 30 runs above average defensively :
And here’s a GIF of that play’s most relevant sequence — for use at parties or whatever:

Carson Cistulli has published a book of aphorisms called Spirited Ejaculations of a New Enthusiast.
Esmil Rogers is now part of the Toronto organization.
And Yan Gomes is now in Cleveland, being that he was in the trade that brought Rogers to Toronto.
I think the leaderboards are usually “last organization played for” rather than “current roster on”. Given that clarification, I think both the leaderboard and your comment are correct.
