I would say a player is “home-grown” if he had more service time in the minors of his current team than in the minors of some other team(s). If service time is too hard to calculate, you could just look at PAs for position players and IP for pitchers; if a player had more of those at the various levels of his MLB team than he had in the various levels of other MLB teams (combined, if he’s been traded more than once), he’s “home-grown.”
