Eno Sarris: I… I can’t. Well… it’s cheap! And he’s got a glove. I suppose it gives them leverage perhaps in negotiations: we HAVE a second baseman to backup Phillips, we don’t need a second baseman back. Or Skip is the backup plan to Billy Ham at second base…

Eno Sarris: Actually think this trade means that he’s back with the Tigers, playing third base and or LF. Castellanos got moved off the position, it’s not as easy as “we’ll just slot him back at third and presto bingo bango.”

I don’t mind the deal for the Rangers as much as some. Paying 19 mill per, right? Fielder can average 3.5 WAR and still make that a reasonable deal. He put up almost 5 WAR in 2011 and 2012. Plus they benefit from an inexpensive Profar manning 2b. Infield defense is top-notch outside of Fielder.

Eno Sarris: I dunno. Heavy guys age badly and he’s in a three-year power decline. Maybe this arrests that decline. Have to be careful not to zoom too far in on a player.

I’ve seen lots of negative comments about Prince’s (and Pujols’) contract but not so many about Votto’s. Isn’t Votto’s the worst of the bunch? Signed through 2023 at huge money.

Eno Sarris: Votto was worth a lot more than Fielder last year. His skillset and body type should age better too. Although, to be fair, they aren’t completely dissimilar in terms of reaching, contact rates.

Tried a test batch of Yards Love Stout with La Colombe coffee at the brewery yesterday. If you only looked at it and smelled it, you’d honestly think it was iced coffee. Nonetheless, quite tasty, and a great beer to drink if you wanted to stay up until 2 AM for some reason. Has anyone ever made a decaf coffee stout? Because they should.

Eno Sarris: Yes, I think they should. Because I know that they don’t grind the coffee or make it really like coffee in beer, but there is a bit of caffeine in those beers and that’s why this non-caffeine drinker has had a Peak Espresso Stout in his fridge for two months now.

Eno Sarris: I like him better than Skaggs. I don’t like Skaggs (90 mph fastball, iffy control, big humping curve hitters can spot and lay off of). Can’t speak for D-Backs, but if they letting him compete for a spot, they like him at least as much as Skaggs.

Eno Sarris: If they sign Peralta, they don’t have to make any decisions about 3b and LF until spring training. Miggie is at first right now I feel like. If they do a big signing, maybe in the OF or bullpen. Maybe some smaller signings like Peralta, Grandy, Nathan.

Eno Sarris: Braves rotation: oops. I doubt they trade for Lackey honestly. They have depth, they want to take a shot at front of rotation help. Roy makes some sense.

Eno Sarris: Even as a guy that doesn’t have much hope for Roy. A few guys have actually helped after shoulder issues in the mid-thirties.

Eno Sarris: Bourjos. Well, for the Tigers, Freese might be better fit. But in a vacuum… they’re all dead.

Eno Sarris: I think that’s attractive to the Cardinals yes. Might actually be a decent fit. Lynn’s the worst of the Card arms I’ve heard bandied about — he doesn’t have a weapon against lefties. Freese is old and not that good (although not RL or anything). Aybar solves a need for the Cards in short-term, and Bourjos probably better than Jay, at least with the glove. Bridge to Taveras at least.

Eno Sarris: Yes. The risk is that he’s the wrong side of a platoon, but I saw enough to like him in deep leagues. Still a chance of even being mixed league relevant, which means yes for your team for sure. he could even be their first baseman.

Eno Sarris: I think he has about the same value as he had before, which is as a throw-in/tasty bit in a bigger trade. More a 4/5, even if he has a little spice.

Eno Sarris: Yes I like all those numbers. Not great for fantasy, but good. Risk is that his speed isn’t translating to the bigs and its more like 15-20.

Eno Sarris: The team is starting to look like a win-now so I doubt they trade him unless they can get big-league pitching back. If they can’t extend him, the best move is to use that money to get an FA SP. They need pitching.

Eno Sarris: The numbers I saw that I liked best for him – Cartwright’s MLEs – looked like .270/.330/.475 or Kendrys Morales. With a Cell boost, he might get to .280 and 30.

Eno Sarris: Actually, the AFL was something like .250/.330/.390 this year, so not that crazy. Cron looked decent. I know he doesn’t have D value and not much patience, but Trumbo made it work. I think Cron will be relevant this year.

Is OBP a bit overrated. The difference between a .317 OBP (not good) and a .350 OBP (good, well above ave) in 600 AB is about one walk every 8 games. How much impact is that? Wouldn’t it be better to have an extra HR/8 game

Eno Sarris: Dunno about that math. Let’s see… Gomez and Donaldson. Gomez has a .338 OBP with a .344 BABIP. Donaldson a .384 OBP with a .333 BABIP. Donaldson’s walk rate was 11.4% to Gomez’ 6.3%. So over 600 PA that’s 68 walks to 38, or 30 walks difference, or one walk every 20 PA, or five games. What happens is that when you have a team of guys like that, it adds up quick.
