Eno Sarris: See you at the top of the hour
11:59 |
Eno Sarris: Lyrics of the day are from a song dedicated to the simulations being run on the Rangers and Tigers right now
And I know I can leave in the night Just a moment in time, a moment in time Don’t be scared of what you find In the night
11:59 |
Comment From TreyPlease justify the Reds signing of Skip Schumaker with something other than he can play multiple positions (but not well)…and why two years?
12:00 |
Eno Sarris: I… I can’t. Well… it’s cheap! And he’s got a glove. I suppose it gives them leverage perhaps in negotiations: we HAVE a second baseman to backup Phillips, we don’t need a second baseman back. Or Skip is the backup plan to Billy Ham at second base…
12:00 |
Comment From JacqueThanks for the chat despite the busy day you got going on.
12:01 |
Eno Sarris: Oh man I want to write about three posts right now. Going to write YET ANOTHER post about THE TRADE.
12:01 |
Comment From GuestObviously depends on where he signs, but what are your thoughts on Jhonny Peralta next year? How steep is his age/PEDs penalty (or is there one at all)?
12:01 |
Eno Sarris: Actually think this trade means that he’s back with the Tigers, playing third base and or LF. Castellanos got moved off the position, it’s not as easy as “we’ll just slot him back at third and presto bingo bango.”
12:02 |
Comment From JacqueThoughts on E5’s production next year? Worth looking to trade for?
12:02 |
Eno Sarris: He’s set a baseline. I see no problems other than age.
12:02 |
Comment From dudeSo, I see a lot of people discussing the demise of Prince Fielder, but no one seems to be talking about the decline of a 31-yr-old second baseman with past health issues health issues named Ian Kinsler. Just saying, just saying…
12:02 |
Comment From dudeI don’t mind the deal for the Rangers as much as some. Paying 19 mill per, right? Fielder can average 3.5 WAR and still make that a reasonable deal. He put up almost 5 WAR in 2011 and 2012. Plus they benefit from an inexpensive Profar manning 2b. Infield defense is top-notch outside of Fielder.
12:03 |
Eno Sarris: I dunno. Heavy guys age badly and he’s in a three-year power decline. Maybe this arrests that decline. Have to be careful not to zoom too far in on a player.
12:03 |
Comment From person hscerIs Jeff Sullivan on vacation? Just in time for part 5 of my 5-part weekly community series to not be posted. Not that the 3 people who were still scoffing at its “content” by part 4 mind ;p
12:04 |
Eno Sarris: Yes, actually, he’s on vacation. Hah.
12:04 |
Comment From MosesDo you think Arcia can cut the whiffs down by enough to be up all of next year?
12:04 |
Eno Sarris: I think he’ll be up all year either way. I think he’ll cut the whiffs a bit. But I don’t think he’ll whiff at league average rate for career.
12:04 |
Comment From FrankI’ve seen lots of negative comments about Prince’s (and Pujols’) contract but not so many about Votto’s. Isn’t Votto’s the worst of the bunch? Signed through 2023 at huge money.
12:05 |
Eno Sarris: Votto was worth a lot more than Fielder last year. His skillset and body type should age better too. Although, to be fair, they aren’t completely dissimilar in terms of reaching, contact rates.
12:05 |
Comment From juan pierres mustacheTried a test batch of Yards Love Stout with La Colombe coffee at the brewery yesterday. If you only looked at it and smelled it, you’d honestly think it was iced coffee. Nonetheless, quite tasty, and a great beer to drink if you wanted to stay up until 2 AM for some reason. Has anyone ever made a decaf coffee stout? Because they should.
12:06 |
Eno Sarris: Yes, I think they should. Because I know that they don’t grind the coffee or make it really like coffee in beer, but there is a bit of caffeine in those beers and that’s why this non-caffeine drinker has had a Peak Espresso Stout in his fridge for two months now.
12:06 |
Comment From MosesTowers said Bradley will compete for a rotation spot out of ST. Obviously DBacks have a glut of unproven/semiproven young arms, but he’s developed enough to rise above Skaggs and others, yes?
12:07 |
Eno Sarris: I like him better than Skaggs. I don’t like Skaggs (90 mph fastball, iffy control, big humping curve hitters can spot and lay off of). Can’t speak for D-Backs, but if they letting him compete for a spot, they like him at least as much as Skaggs.

Comment From Davepredict what the pirates do about their first base situation.
12:07 |
Eno Sarris: Grab what falls. Or Loney and Sanchez, as long as Loney not too expensive.
12:07 |
Comment From Prince FeelherConsidering the surplus value and cash savings, Belnome is a better option for the Rays than Loney right? I don’t have the MLE in front of me but the OBP was Votto-esque.
12:08 |
Eno Sarris: They’ll plug and play, as they always do. Maybe Morneau if he’s cheap.
12:08 |
Comment From Skeeter boyWhat does Addison Russell’s peak fantasy season look like? Maybe Ian Desmond #’s?
12:08 |
Eno Sarris: Maybe, but very different OBP. I believe in his selectivity. Also, I think he could put up better defensive metrics. But yeah, I won’t put him down for more than 20 homers until I see him knock em out of o.co myself.
12:08 |
Comment From juan pierres mustacheJose Canseco and his girlfriend adopted several fainting goats. He had to put diapers on them to drive them home so they wouldn’t crap all over the car when they panicked and passed out. How is this not already a reality TV show?
12:09 |
Eno Sarris: People hate on him, but I think he’s good TV. I mean, the ball hit off his head and went for a homer.
12:09 |
Comment From PhilDo you see the Tigers looking for a LF (Choo, Beltran, maybe Ellsbury). Move Cabrera to 1B, Castellano to 3B. Can still make a big signing and sign Miggy/Max with Hunter and Martinez on the last year of their contract
12:10 |
Eno Sarris: If they sign Peralta, they don’t have to make any decisions about 3b and LF until spring training. Miggie is at first right now I feel like. If they do a big signing, maybe in the OF or bullpen. Maybe some smaller signings like Peralta, Grandy, Nathan.
12:10 |
Comment From guestIf you could only have one, profar or xander.
12:10 |
Eno Sarris: Kinda fell in love with Xander’s plate approach…
12:10 |
Comment From BenJorge Soler and Jed Lowrie or Kris Bryant? old school 5 categories.
12:11 |
Eno Sarris: I think I’ll take Bryant. He’s closer than Soler, smaller bust rate. Lowrie makes me think twice, but I’m in the camp that we can’t forget about the injury stuff.
12:11 |
Comment From MiketronSo how much will people overrate Castellanos going into next year?
12:11 |
Eno Sarris: Just because a dude hits .300 in the minors does not mean he can do it in the bigs. And he didn’t show a ton of power. And there’s still a chance he doesn’t have a job come April 1.
12:12 |
Comment From MattJust gave a cancer research talk to my department, what beer should I celebrate with tonight? Leaning towards some Flower Power.
12:12 |
Eno Sarris: Seems appropriate.
12:12 |
Comment From PhilHow much does Fielder at 1B counteract the other three fielders?
12:12 |
Eno Sarris: Not as bad as having a bad third baseman or shortstop and good everywhere else.
12:12 |
Comment From ShawnBraves Rotation Question: The braves seem to want a veteran in the rotation. Would there be more risk in signing Roy Halladay/Bartolo Colon, or giving up prospects for John Lackey? What would the price be for lackey since you get him for 2 years of 7.75 mill AAV?
12:13 |
Comment From JacqueSo E5’s wrist isn’t a big concern?
12:13 |
Eno Sarris: Cartilage and scar tissue? I’m not worried yet.
12:13 |
Eno Sarris: Braves rotation: oops. I doubt they trade for Lackey honestly. They have depth, they want to take a shot at front of rotation help. Roy makes some sense.
12:14 |
Eno Sarris: Even as a guy that doesn’t have much hope for Roy. A few guys have actually helped after shoulder issues in the mid-thirties.
12:14 |
Comment From Dave DombrowskiWho would you rather have on your team in 2014: David Freese or Peter Bourjos?
12:14 |
Eno Sarris: Bourjos. Well, for the Tigers, Freese might be better fit. But in a vacuum… they’re all dead.
12:15 |
Comment From NicoRosenthal tweeted this morning about the Cardinals and Angels discussing Freese. Could Freese and Lynn or Kelly fetch Aybar and Bourjos? Is that attractive for the Cardinals?
12:16 |
Eno Sarris: I think that’s attractive to the Cardinals yes. Might actually be a decent fit. Lynn’s the worst of the Card arms I’ve heard bandied about — he doesn’t have a weapon against lefties. Freese is old and not that good (although not RL or anything). Aybar solves a need for the Cards in short-term, and Bourjos probably better than Jay, at least with the glove. Bridge to Taveras at least.
12:16 |
Comment From GuestDoes a Wieters for Shark deal make sense for both teams?
12:17 |
Eno Sarris: Doubt it. How many years does Wieters still have left? Anyway, I think the Cubs are looking for arms for the Shark. Their position player prospects look good in leather.
12:17 |
Comment From JoJoLooks like 1 way or another Khris Davis is gonna be starting in Milwaukees OF. Do you think he can be a solid #3 OF in NL only? 9 teams
12:17 |
Eno Sarris: Yes. The risk is that he’s the wrong side of a platoon, but I saw enough to like him in deep leagues. Still a chance of even being mixed league relevant, which means yes for your team for sure. he could even be their first baseman.
12:18 |
Comment From person hscerWill A-Rod be broke when he’s 50?
12:18 |
Eno Sarris: Too good-looking. Could wrestle as a heel if he was hurting for cash.
12:18 |
Comment From NarkusMaslundChances that Dioner Navarro is the best combination of floor/ceiling/$ spent at C this winter?
12:18 |
Eno Sarris: Fairly good, but depends on how many years they give McCann.
12:18 |
Comment From John H.Who do you keep as your last pitcher, dynasty… Beachy or Josh Johnson??
12:19 |
Eno Sarris: Great question. JJ has more upside, more risk. Might matter how the rest of your staff looks.
12:19 |
Comment From John H.Does Ryan Howard ever have a good season again?
12:19 |
Eno Sarris: .270/30/90 in 550 PAs and a platoon buddy in Ruf? Could happen at least one more time.
12:19 |
Comment From MiketronI would be more worried about Arcia’s attitude than his production. He is kind of a jerkface
12:20 |
Eno Sarris: Man you shoulda heard what he said about you.
12:20 |
Comment From GuestThe Rangers: Stupid, desperate, or both?
12:20 |
Eno Sarris: I’ll look into this some more, but I think this had a lot to do with Kinsler and how he’ll age.
12:20 |
Comment From SteveVArizona looking to make some moves, does Delgado have much trade value? Do teams see him as a low budget #3 with upside or not?
12:21 |
Eno Sarris: I think he has about the same value as he had before, which is as a throw-in/tasty bit in a bigger trade. More a 4/5, even if he has a little spice.
12:21 |
Comment From SteveVIs Eaton a breakout candidate? Over under for next year – 12 hr’s, .270 BA, 25 steals, .340 OBP?
12:21 |
Eno Sarris: Yes I like all those numbers. Not great for fantasy, but good. Risk is that his speed isn’t translating to the bigs and its more like 15-20.
12:21 |
Comment From Shark MapiroWhat type of return could the Indians expect if they trade Masterson? If they can’t extend him, do you think the best move is to trade him?
12:22 |
Eno Sarris: The team is starting to look like a win-now so I doubt they trade him unless they can get big-league pitching back. If they can’t extend him, the best move is to use that money to get an FA SP. They need pitching.
12:22 |
Comment From ScottDoes new WSox sign, Abreau need time in minors? Which do you think he’s closer to…A) .260-25 hrs or B? .280 30 hrs?
12:23 |
Eno Sarris: The numbers I saw that I liked best for him – Cartwright’s MLEs – looked like .270/.330/.475 or Kendrys Morales. With a Cell boost, he might get to .280 and 30.
12:24 |
Comment From NarkusMaslundWhich top 50 FA do you expect gets the deal that will be viewed the most favourably next winter?

Comment From Officer FarvaI keep Telling myself my palate will change and i’ll like stouts and porters. I love beer. IPA’s, Brown Ale’s even the Belgian white’s but the stouts and porters …..they overwhelm and not in a good way like some IPA’s do…….just me? will i age graciously wihtout Porters and Stouts?

Comment From ProjectionsDo you think Ian Desmond will take a slide downward this year?
12:27 |
Eno Sarris: Wrote about it a little. There’s risk in that none of his skills is standout. Any degradation in power and contact and he could hit .240 with 18 homers. Will come eventually, maybe not this year.

Comment From A Tribe Called GuestTrying to figure out what to do at short in my dynasty league. Are Everth’s extra steals worth the OBP hit, compared to Andrus?

12:33 |
Comment From DaveAm I the only person that wouldn’t want any of the cardinals starters besides Wacha, Wainwright, and Miller? The rest are all question marks in terms of starter/reliever and crappy peripherals.

12:33 |
Comment From FrankWhat do you think about the Hawkins deal?

12:35 |
Eno Sarris: Doubt that’s happening. Not Beane Style. Chicago?
12:35 |
Comment From Mike T.First off, Port Brewing’s Board Meeting Brown ale is delicious. Secondly, why are people so googoo gaga over Fielder’s power potential in Texas? I mean, he should be around 35 homers, but those who are calling for 40+ don’t seem to realize that he only topped 38 once while playing his home games in a park that is equally friendly as Texas for power.
12:35 |
Eno Sarris: Yeah, I saw an over under at 32. If I take the over, it’s by one or two.
12:35 |
Comment From GSonOf the two, who has a better chance of returning to the Tribe, Scott “Rock the” Kazmir or Ubaldo !??

12:36 |
Comment From GSonBilly Hamilton… will make Reds fans forget about Shin-soo BIG LEAGUE Choo?.. yes / no?
12:36 |
Eno Sarris: Well not because they the same player, but I think Hamilton, on wheels alone, will be a much better CF defensively. And he’ll be exciting. But unless he takes steps forward at the plate, he won’t replace all of Choo’s production.
12:36 |
Comment From SteveVDo you think Beachy returns to old form? Is he a #2 or more like a #3 going forward?
12:37 |
Eno Sarris: I like him more than Podhorzer, but I’ll take him as a number three.
12:37 |
Comment From DaveWhat does it take for a team to get Ike Davis? prospects or MLB ready players?
12:37 |
Eno Sarris: Outfielders either way.

Comment From MarkStouts are a well represented group. Sante Fe’s Imperial Java is mighty tasty but is barely above replacement level. Are there plans to break up the stouts into more sub-styles?
12:38 |
Eno Sarris: We’ll have some tools that will allow different sorts of grouping at some point. So many plans.
12:38 |
Comment From BobWhat would Marte’s WAR be if he put up that season in CF?

Comment From MartyEnooooo, what’s up! Would you rather sign 3 2-win players or 1 six-win player? All else equal.
12:39 |
Eno Sarris: I want the six-winner. I know there’s more risk in putting that all in one place, but I feel like finding a two-winner on the scrap heap is much easier. Gregor Blanco, Ryan Raburn, there’s more out there.

12:41 |

Comment From NarkusMaslund“Triple E” or “EEE” (middle initial is also E) are all excellent Edwin nicknames. Or maybe “Quadruple E” or “EEEE” for Excellent Edwin Elpidio Encarnacion.
12:42 |
Comment From person hscerE-5 was a brilliant nickname when it was created. Because Encarnacion played third base. And committed a lot of errors. And 5 is the number representing third base. And “E” means error. So E-5 means an error on the third baseman. Which Encarnacion did a lot.

12:43 |
Comment From ScottTWhen do you think Posey moves off C? Where to 3b/2b/0f?
12:43 |
Eno Sarris: Sooner than we think. Third base. Perhaps next year. Because I don’t think this team wants to sign Pablo long-term, good year or no. And Posey’s getting a bit beat up back there.

Eno Sarris: If they have the money, go after Tanaka. They have depth, need front of the rotation stuff.
12:46 |
Comment From Just A GuyI know we should take AFL numbers with a bucket of salt, but should we feel about CJ Cron’s 2013 performance after what he did in the AFL?
12:47 |
Eno Sarris: Actually, the AFL was something like .250/.330/.390 this year, so not that crazy. Cron looked decent. I know he doesn’t have D value and not much patience, but Trumbo made it work. I think Cron will be relevant this year.
12:47 |
Comment From AaronDoesn’t it seem reasonable that the Orioles and Mariners could at least be used as leverage for Cano’s side? They’re both ALWAYS rumored to be ready to spend.
12:47 |
Eno Sarris: And the Mets.
12:47 |
Comment From Officer FarvaMLB tv had a couple of people listed for the rule 5 drafts…. notably the Jays picked up George Bell and Kelly Gruber in the years preceding there championships in the 90’s
12:47 |
Comment From MitchI keep offering my “Wong” in dynasty trades. Should I start wording that different?
12:47 |
Comment From JohnIn what range would you put Danny Salazar in your SP rankings? Any other SP sleepers you’re thinking about in rounds ~18-22?
12:48 |
Eno Sarris: I doubt you’ll get him there. Around those rounds… sorry let me look
12:49 |
Eno Sarris: Kluber? Ross? Doubront?
12:49 |
Comment From SteveVDo you think Sano will eventually become: A) Ave 3B, B) well below ave 3B, C) moved to RF, D) moved to 1B?
12:50 |
Eno Sarris: It may not matter, but with the K%… I think they keep him at 3B as long as they can. I just saw Pelotero so I’m all like he can play at short! But he can’t.
12:51 |
Comment From MiketronSo Bell’s finally made it to Rochester. I like the Two-Hearted Ale, but the rest of their offerings seem pretty unspectacular.
12:51 |
Eno Sarris: They are up and down, for sure. One of their pales was the replacement level for the Upper Midwest.
12:51 |
Comment From DavidYour the Reds GM. Is Billy Hamilton your starting CF next year?
12:51 |
Comment From Du ClawI heard you had that peanut butter porter coming your way – tried it yet? BAR score? (given I’m not exactly sure what the replacement level is for peanut butter porters these days)
12:51 |
Eno Sarris: In the fridge. Got sick again. Kid in day care.
12:51 |
Comment From SadwickIf the Braves do add to the rotation, is a reclamation project like Halladay really a good idea? I can’t see Halladay having much more upside than Beachy and he’ll cost money. I think a trade would make more sense. Samardzija?
12:52 |
Eno Sarris: Oh yeah Braves were on my list for the shark. And the Red Sox.
12:52 |
Comment From Carlton BlackwoodI estimate that I am 5-7 years away from being a National MLB writer for a major media outlet. Could you share some of your lockerroom tips? How to get the best answers in an interview, etc?
12:53 |
Eno Sarris: I’m probably not the one to ask. I’ve been laughed at, seen more furrowed brows, been heckled, been yelled at… Oh! That’s my advice. Thick skin. Which I don’t necessarily have in real life, but somehow, among jocks… I’m aight.
12:53 |
Eno Sarris: Conquered those demons, you know.
12:53 |
Comment From MartyA cool feature on beergraphs would be “If you like ABC you should try XYZ”.
12:53 |
Eno Sarris: In the works.
12:54 |
Comment From BenDoes Asdrubal Cabrera fit with the dodgers?
12:54 |
Eno Sarris: Would make for a clunky left side of the infield, but sure.
12:54 |
Comment From GaryIt would be odd if the Tigers resigned Peralta given his asking price and that they didn’t think he was even worth 14.1 QO after the season. His market would probably have to fall a lot for that.
12:54 |
Eno Sarris: Or is asking price is just a negotiation ploy.
12:54 |
Comment From MarkMarcus Stroman, woof!
12:55 |
Comment From SadwickHave you seen the pictures for the Braves new stadium? I know they’re purely conceptual at this point but I did like the panels for shade and the extra seating down the lines and behind home(even if the financing and location still make my head hurt).
12:55 |
Eno Sarris: And a lot of trees, which is very Atlanta. But I didn’t see parking and I hate the financing/ location.
12:55 |
Comment From GarethYou have hope for Trevor Bauer, or is just an eccentric failed pitching prospect who thinks he can Rap like Eminem?
12:56 |
Eno Sarris: A bit of hope. I like some of his breaking pitches. I wonder if pitchers that go that far to get extension all have bad control. Look at him, Tim, Walden, the guys that really almost jump out, and all of them have command issues.
12:56 |
Comment From MarkIs Drew Hutchison an interesting later round flyer, assuming he gets the a spot in the Jays rotation?
12:56 |
Eno Sarris: Deep league yes. Mixed league? Don’t think so.
12:56 |
Comment From AlexWhat is the best defensive stat to look at? Thanks for the chat
12:56 |
Eno Sarris: All of them. I like to use UZR/150 and DRS in tandem. If they disagree, I use my eyes.
12:57 |
Comment From xbillxHow much do you love Adrian Beltre?
12:57 |
Eno Sarris: So goddam much. DO YOU KNOW HE DROPS HIS BACK KNEE THE MINUTE HE SEES CURVEBALL SO THAT HIS SWING WILL MIMIC A CURVEBALLS MOVEMENT INTO THE BAT?
12:57 |
Comment From GSonI want more Cowbell !!
12:57 |
Comment From MartyRe: 6 win player. Jeff agrees with you, Cameron said 6-win answer is wrong because you assume the risk in one player. I think you should each do a column stating your cases.
12:58 |
Comment From MartySince there’s no baseball, I’ve been watching Ken Burns National Parks series. it’s pretty magnificent.
12:58 |
Comment From JTIf you’re Easy E, does that mean Icecube’s actually sitting at your keyboard now?
12:58 |
Comment From dudeThere have been some excellent ludes today. Good work fellas.
12:58 |
Comment From MartyI think the real question here is, why don’t they make toilet iPad holders for adults??
12:58 |
Eno Sarris: Extended self-congratulatory lude.
12:58 |
Comment From MartyYou can critique Prince’s body type v. Kinsler, but Fielder has been far more durable so far. Do you put any predictive stock in that?
12:59 |
Eno Sarris: Yes that’s important. Past DL stints predict future ones.
12:59 |
Comment From FrankRob Neyer wrote a bit about Ben Zobrist and I have to ask: Do you really think Zobrist is a top-5 player like his WAR says?
12:59 |
Eno Sarris: It’s hard to see it. But a guy that can play short, second, the outfield, has patience, speed, power? He’s very valuable. And this year he was 19th.
1:00 |
Eno Sarris: Not counting pitchers.
1:00 |
Comment From GarethThe Indians lose Jiminez, Kazmir, Hill, Albers, Smith, Perez – So they sign David Murphy, Naturally.
1:00 |
Comment From GarethAsdrubal Cabrera is being paid 10 million in 2014. Is he tradeable at that price with one year left and could the Indians get pitching for him?
1:00 |
Eno Sarris: Yeah they would trade him for pitching and I absolutely think he has trade value.
1:00 |
Comment From SMCSo should I keep Miggy for $66?
1:01 |
Eno Sarris: I’m not keeping anyone over $60, but my teams were middle of the pack. If you were a top-three team, maybe for one more year.
1:01 |
Comment From JALWhat round would you take Billy Hamilton in?
1:01 |
Eno Sarris: No earlier than fifth, so I probably won’t get him. There’s risk that his bat puts him back in minors…
1:01 |
Comment From Officer Farvathis from yahoo – insight? Wed, Nov 20
Matt Cerrone of MetsBlog.com reports that the Mets have had internal discussions about Brewers’ outfielder Ryan Braun.
1:01 |
Eno Sarris: Sure, I’d take him on the Mets if his value is down. Mets need COF badly.
1:02 |
Comment From Carlton BlackwoodDeJesus 2/10.5 or Murphy 2/12?
1:02 |
Eno Sarris: DeJ I think. He can play CF.
1:02 |
Comment From JohnThoughts on Andrew Cashner for 2014?
1:02 |
Eno Sarris: Love love. Gonna write him up too. Went back to the knuckle slider and the Ks came back.
1:02 |
Comment From Pirates HurdlesThe rule 5 draft used to be interesting before they added the extra year of development to decide whom to protect (about 5 years ago now). Virtually all the impact full rule 5 guys were before that rule change. Clemente and Santana at the top of the list.
1:02 |
Comment From SteveVHow often do prospects at AA/AAA improve their K% substantially? i.e Bryan, Sano.
1:03 |
Eno Sarris: It’s less worrisome than bad BB%, actually. K% in minors doesn’t have a strong correlation to major league success rates.
1:03 |
Eno Sarris: Notice I didn’t say anything about improving K%. Just some do well despite, some improve it.
1:04 |
Comment From Officer FarvaEveryone says move to “Cali you’ll get sick less” i assume they mean its because the climate is more constant – me being a New Englander. you’re sick all the time… mid you i have 3 kids under the age of 5 so it’s not the kids….. you should see a Doctor
1:04 |
Eno Sarris: I’ve been sick for two months, ever since it started raining more (winter here in NoCal). I do blame day care. And have been to the doctor.
1:04 |
Comment From MarkDevin Mesoraco, top 10 catcher next year?
1:04 |
Eno Sarris: That’s too much helium. But I do like him next year, and will be drafting him some.
1:05 |
Comment From illinibobI read your observations on Delino De Shields, Is he trouble or just immature?
1:05 |
Eno Sarris: Maybe he’s another kid of a big leaguer, feels it’s all coming his way no matter what. But a year in High-A when he was putting up numbers like that… should have taught him a lesson. What I saw in the AFL was more lackluster effort. I’m down on him.
1:06 |
Comment From DTSSRumor has it that Magnus Carlsen has gotten bored of chess since he has no competition and is planning on trying out baseball. Will he be a bust like Jordan or does he have what it takes to make it to the majors?
1:06 |
Comment From MartyMy favorite part of the sketches of the new Braves stadium is the conspicuous absence of a parking lot.
1:06 |
Comment From SeymourMiguel Socolovich! time to get excited!
1:06 |
Comment From GarethMasterson, Salazar, Kluber, McCallister and Bauer ain’t gonna cut in for a playoff bound team, right?
1:07 |
Eno Sarris: They need to sign a guy. Salazar *might* be a number one, Masterson is anywher from a #1 to a #4 depending on his command that year. Kluber is a safe 2-3 IMO. That’s three guys you might be able to depend on. They need to sign at least one guy to push McA and B to a platoon at 5/6
1:07 |
Comment From Seymourgun to your head, who is the Mets starting SS on opening day (not allowed to answer Ruben Tejada)?
1:08 |
Eno Sarris: Stephen Drew? I hope not Jhonny Peralta. Tejada’s in voluntary offseason workouts! Maybe he can yet be a shortstop version of Mark lewis.
1:08 |
Comment From GarethDo you think all this talk of Billy Hamilton stealing 100 bases is viable or just hyperbole?
1:09 |
Eno Sarris: Did you see that piece by JJ Cooper on how his time to second is basically the same as an ideal pitcher time to home plus pop time? He breaks the game. He can get to second before a good throw from a good pitcher. Only superlative throws get him.
1:09 |
Comment From DTSSE5 is a nickname? I thought it was a term for a common response to 1. e4. Darn. I think I’ve been misunderstanding some of the commentary on this site. Baseball is the American name for what the rest of the world calls “chess”, right? Like “soccer” and football.
1:09 |
Comment From DTSSIf A-Rod is short on cash, he can always sell his centaur painting.
1:09 |
Comment From PrinceYou can’t strain fat.
1:09 |
Comment From twinmhFinally Profar’s spot in the lineup is settled, so we can move on to worrying about Odor being blocked.
1:09 |
Eno Sarris: Listen that sounds like something your doctor should talk to you about.
1:09 |
Comment From DavidDoes JA Happ make Blue Jays rotation next year?
1:09 |
Eno Sarris: I think they hope no.
1:09 |
Comment From PatI have internal discussions about being an Astronaut
1:10 |
Comment From SadwickRe: Braves’ Stadium They actually announced there will be a parking deck under the stadium, which is a new twist, and there would be large amounts of parking “within two miles”. Still preliminary of course, but I think they’ll need some serious parking decks nearby, and I want to know how in the name of Crom name they plan to combat the traffic off 285. They’re trading similar headaches for more chances at revenue.
1:10 |
Eno Sarris: Oh 285 is the worst thing ever
1:10 |
Comment From Guestspeaking of improving k rates? Can Lewis Brinson become George Springer?
1:11 |
Eno Sarris: More important, is either a lock to be a good big leaguer without improvement there?
1:11 |
Comment From KBHow crazy would it be to keep Bogaerts over one of Mauer or Felix in a league you can own a player forever? TB, BB are additional cats.
1:11 |
Eno Sarris: Short term crazy, but with Mauer going to first… Not long-term crazy.
1:11 |
Comment From RyanWCrystal Ball: Jorge Alfaro’s peak WAR season and slash line will be?
1:12 |
Eno Sarris: I worry about the bat. Could be backup d-first guy.
1:12 |
Comment From MiketronI thought Cashner went to a different slider because of injury concerns. Is that no longer a worry?
1:12 |
Eno Sarris: He went back.
1:12 |
Comment From JTIf I could talk the guy into taking Chelsor Cuthbert instead of Josh Bell, that’s better for me, right?
1:12 |
Comment From juan pierres mustachemy projection for every one of those CLE pitchers is: *shrug*
1:12 |
Eno Sarris: DANNY SALAZAR
1:12 |
Comment From SadwickMagnus Carlsen would immediately have top ten fantasy name value. In fact I think I’m naming my kids Magnus now, all of them.
1:13 |
Comment From RyanWDoesn’t Choo seem like a Shoe in to be a ranger. A leadoff Choo would let Profar slide to 8 hole.
1:13 |
Eno Sarris: The Rangers do actually need help at top of lineup now. But do they have cash leftover?
1:13 |
Comment From MartyIsn’t pitch selection a learned skill to some part? It’s not like speed or power; I dont get why Hamilton can’t take more junk pitches.
1:13 |
Eno Sarris: I think it is, I think in his case, he’s come late to switch-hitting, and look at how long it took Fowler for it to take.
1:14 |
Comment From GarethIs there a chance Profar ends up being not very good as the regualar Second Baseman in Texas? For every Trout there’s a “Shudders” Andy Marte.
1:15 |
Eno Sarris: Of course there is! But, considering his age (20), I think just doing what he did last year was sign enough that he won’t be an Andy Marte.
1:15 |
Comment From PatCarlos Martinez to the pen in 2014? Please say he’s got a legit chance to start and be productive?
1:15 |
Eno Sarris: He actually has bad splits because his main two pitches are the platoon-worst combo, the Masterson: sinker/slider. Pen is a risk.
1:15 |
Comment From SteveVIs Mike Minor a solid #2?
1:15 |
Comment From Hogwagonwhat is the proof that substantiates “heavy guys age badly”? Mo Vaughn? didn’t he tear a muscle/have other injuries? Is there some long list of other guys I’m missing? Heavy guys are few and far between, seems like little more than anecdotes unless I’m missing something, no?
1:16 |
Eno Sarris: We have an aging curve based on all heavy players and yes, it’s fairly damning.
1:16 |
Comment From GuestGot some Zombie Dust yesterday! Thoughts?
1:16 |
Comment From AndyGood news: Zombie Dust was released in Milwaukee!!!
1:16 |
Eno Sarris: In related news.
1:16 |
Comment From AndyBad news: It may only be for a limited time and I didn’t get any before it sold out.
1:16 |
Comment From juan pierres mustachenot *shrug* meaning “don’t care”, *shrug* meaning that the potential outcomes are super unpredictable
1:16 |
Eno Sarris: Ah yeah. That’s true.
1:16 |
Comment From GarethIs “Fielder” the most Ironic Last Name in Baseball?
1:17 |
Comment From SteveVHomer Bailey
1:17 |
Comment From ChrisDo think the Rangers are favored over the A’s at this point?
1:17 |
Eno Sarris: A’s haven’t made their big offseason pitcher trade yet.
1:17 |
Comment From AaronWith DET out, Did the odds of CHC signing Cano just go up? A superstar veteran could really take some pressure off of Castro/Rizzo, and any upcoming prospects.
1:18 |
Eno Sarris: Feel like that team would spend money on pitching over hitting, but I guess they could be a dark horse.
1:18 |
Comment From MartyBALLFOUR!
1:18 |
Eno Sarris: Yeahbut at one point he did have a walks problem.
1:18 |
Comment From GuestAndy- for Zombie Dust you can try the wine store on 129th and Bluemound… but shhhh. They only got 2 cases in. Word is, 3 Floyds released it by annual volume, so you can call around to places you know carry a lot of 3 Floyds year round.
1:18 |
Comment From xbillxJason Castro top 10 catcher next year?
1:18 |
Eno Sarris: I’ll go out on the limb and say yes. He changed his swing plane on purpose, had more power, kept the line drives. I like it.
1:19 |
Comment From juan pierres mustacheFurbush! (I don’t totally “get” irony)
1:19 |
Comment From MartyThis Mike and the Mad Dog clip of them arguing about whether or not the Yankees needed a new stadium is pretty much the best 10 minutes in the history of radio: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eft3Q_zO6NE?
1:19 |
Comment From Marty“Journey to the Center of the Earth” should be a new Braves promotional night.
1:20 |
Comment From GarethIs Beltre so boringly good that he is underrated in fantasy and real life? It seems Longo goes ahead of him in drafts EVERY year.
1:20 |
Eno Sarris: Good point. Age probably a part of this, but Beltre aging really well.
1:20 |
Comment From MartyWhich of these pitchers are likely to have innings limits next year: Fernandez / Salazer / Gray / Ventura
1:22 |
Eno Sarris: Ventura managed ~150, so he can get to 180. JF got to 160, so I doubt he has a real limit. Salazar only got to 140…so I bet he might only get 175 or so. Gray’s all good.
1:22 |
Comment From RotoLandoWhat happened to Lucas Duda? Used to be I could count on a weekly update.
1:22 |
Eno Sarris: Don’t know where Maxamuz went. But Duda is working out hard!
1:22 |
Comment From dudeMaxamuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1:23 |
Comment From MartyWhere’s the dude who always takes real-time photos of his class lecture?
1:23 |
Eno Sarris: Jordan’s gone too! Sadness.
1:23 |
Comment From Nick O26-team Strat league. Was offered Miguel Sano for Shelby Miller. It’s Strat, so he gets the value of Miller’s rookie year (my team is a non-contender, so don’t need Miller this year).
1:24 |
Eno Sarris: Man, Sano is striking out 30% of the time… that’s a bit much for me. If you could get a random live arm type throw in, I’d be more into it.
1:24 |
Comment From person hscer“I’m still here!” “Go away.”
1:24 |
Comment From JTToday’s chat traffic = x % of summer time chat traffic?
1:24 |
Eno Sarris: 50%? Still didn’t get to a lot, sorry guys.
1:25 |
Comment From SteveVIs OBP a bit overrated. The difference between a .317 OBP (not good) and a .350 OBP (good, well above ave) in 600 AB is about one walk every 8 games. How much impact is that? Wouldn’t it be better to have an extra HR/8 game
1:27 |
Eno Sarris: Dunno about that math. Let’s see… Gomez and Donaldson. Gomez has a .338 OBP with a .344 BABIP. Donaldson a .384 OBP with a .333 BABIP. Donaldson’s walk rate was 11.4% to Gomez’ 6.3%. So over 600 PA that’s 68 walks to 38, or 30 walks difference, or one walk every 20 PA, or five games. What happens is that when you have a team of guys like that, it adds up quick.
1:27 |
Comment From DTSSWhat moves would you make this offseason if you were Mike Rizzo?
1:28 |
Eno Sarris: Working on a big post on this, but the query is real tough. Depth. I think he just needs to sign a number four starter, maybe a reliever, maybe another infielder like Infante.
1:28 |
Comment From GarethDoes the shutdown for the post-season affect Shelby Miller’s trade value somewhat? He seems like a nice piece if the Cardinals wanted to some trade depth for a Shortstop. We’d take him For Asdrubal HAHAHAHAHAHA
1:29 |
Eno Sarris: I doubt it affects what the Cards think of him, but he’s absolutely a better fantasy value than Wacha going into next year IMO.
1:29 |
Comment From JTSingle best city for rap/hip hop for you?
1:29 |
Eno Sarris: I liked New York a lot if you can count Brooklyn. But the Bay Area has a place in my heart. Blackalicious, Del, the whole Quannum/Sole Sides crew. That’s old school now. don’t know about the guys now.
1:30 |
Comment From DTSSSteveV: wOBA/wRC+ is what you’re looking for. OBP measures one aspect of hitting, but no one claims it’s an overall measure of hitting.
1:30 |
Comment From GarethAgree. Wacha is going to be Soooo Overrated now. Not touching him. Hype, Sophomore Slump ect ect
1:30 |
Comment From GarethRizzo and Starlin Big Dissappointments. I blame Edwin Jackson.
1:30 |
Eno Sarris: Let’s end on a lude. I have to write yet another post on the trade. thanks guys!

With a phone full of pictures of pitchers' fingers, strange beers, and his two toddler sons, Eno Sarris can be found at the ballpark or a brewery most days. Read him here, writing about the A's or Giants at The Athletic, or about beer at October. Follow him on Twitter @enosarris if you can handle the sandwiches and inanity.
Most Ironic last name in baseball…for a pitcher…Balfour.
