Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 1/16/14
11:45 |
: Here in 15 minutes!
|
12:00 |
Wherever you go CHORUS The fundamental problem |
12:00 |
(chanting) Eno, Eno, Eno, Eno, Eno! |
12:00 |
: whoohooo that’ll get me pumped
|
12:00 |
Was it just me or did Brian Kenney keep calling you “Enus” the other day? |
12:00 |
: yeah and yet he introduced me as John Hart as one of the greatest young minds in baseball today which is kinda hilarious.
|
12:01 |
Impact of Kershaw’s contract on future Trout negotiations? |
12:01 |
: From what I understand, comps have a huge thing to do with this, and though they are both great, I don’t think they are great comps for each other.
|
12:01 |
CLAYTON KERSHAW |
12:01 |
: We should get him a gift, no?
|
12:02 |
Kelly Johnson w/ the Yanks: 2B/3B/OF eligibility and 20+ HR….buying? and in what formats? |
12:02 |
: Eh. Too many other players there. He’s one of the better ones, but it might not work out for a full-time role. I’d take him a deep OBP league though.
|
12:02 |
Any way the Tanaka deadline (Jan 24) is holding up FA hitter signings? seems awful quiet….. |
12:03 |
: For sure this is what is happening. I wonder if it’s even keeping AJ Burnett from deciding on retiring in a weird way. Which is killing me in one dynasty league.
|
12:03 |
What do you think 2014 season has in store for Yan Gomes? The thought is that his ~.340 BABIP is due for some regression but some are quick to point out that he has always been a high BABIP guy in the minors and the adjustments he made after leaving the Jay had a positive impact on those, as well. With Santana’s inability to be a ‘catcher’ in almost any sense of the word the Indians are probably looking at Gomes to be the starter now, right? |
12:03 |
: If he can keep the K% where it was, then he’ll have a great year… he’s really looking like the starter, always had power. BABIPs in minors are usually high, unless you’re Manny Machado, so I dunno about those. I’d regress the K%, the BABIP, and therefore the BA, but I think he can be a top-12er.
|
12:04 |
Better MI play for 2014: Aaron Hill or Jurickson Profar? |
12:04 |
: Gotta be Hill. Profar’s speed really underwhelmed last year and Hill has more power for now.
|
12:04 |
I’m currently using Chad Young’s format to come up with auction values based off of Steamer’s projections in a Ottoneu points league. Based off my calculations, Steamer has Matt Holliday as a top 10 outfielder for that format. You buying? |
12:05 |
: No, well, mostly based on age. I think he’ll start to get hurt more, speed is gone… but if he’s a good points outfielder? sure.
|
12:05 |
Hi Eno…will you guys be doing overal and positional rankings for the 2014 fantasy season? Also was wondering if you’ll do something like a ’10 players to avoid’ and ’10 “sleepers”‘. I’m relatively new to the site so if it already exists…sorry that I’m late to the game but thought it’d be cool to have a saber-influenced fantasy “guide”. Thanks! |
12:06 |
: Yeah we’ll do rankings. We also do ten bold predictions where we try to really push ourselves and think weird. I’ll do a post of my guys, I’ll add one about my guys to avoid. Next week, we start going through each team in INF/OUT/SP/RP posts, division by division. We’ll have auction values and the whole nine yards. Scroll down to ‘draft tools’ on RG and you’ll see what we had last year.
|
12:06 |
How do I get rid of Uggla? Who makes sense as a trade partner for me? |
12:07 |
: I was pimping the Yankees, but guess not. I think you’re stuck.
|
12:07 |
bar 2 blocks from my house in Philadelphia is serving Pliny, Blind Pig, RR Sours tonight. /dances /coworkers are staring /continues dancing, maintaining eye contact |
12:07 |
: daaaamn I’m in Cali and I don’t think my bar is doing that.
|
12:07 |
What are your thoughts on Jonathan Villar for the upcoming season only? Compared to Rollins or A. Ramirez? |
12:07 |
: I’m a little worried that he’ll fail to hit .240. He could steal 40, but that K%, without power… yeah I’d rather have the other two, but they are in the same tier.
|
12:08 |
Hey Eno, you’re so fine, you’re so fine you blow my mind. With interesting baseball analysis. |
12:08 |
PERFORMANCE ENOHANCING DRUGS |
12:08 |
What do we want? Eno! When do we want it? Eno! |
12:08 |
: happy sad happy interlude
|
12:08 |
Our league has a lot of sidebets on this one. Gattis or D’aunard for 2014 ? |
12:09 |
: I’ll take Gattis unless you’re in an OBP league. I think TDA will be an excellent real-life catcher — he’s a great framer, good defensively, will take some walks, have a bit of power — but I think he’s also probably in the scrum with the .260/15-20 guys with the bat. Gattis is old, has no projection, isn’t great at plate discipline, but he has a lot more power, and I think he can manage a .250 batting average.
|
12:09 |
over/under .250 BA and 25 HR for Corey Hart in 2014? |
12:10 |
: Under. Crowded team, coming off injury, tougher park. Doesn’t mean I don’t think he’s an interesting pick.
|
12:10 |
Help the Mariners with their Outfield Issues! Infield looks set and Zunino has to be the C. Can they spin Franklin and a pitching prospect for a legitimate MLB OF who won’t kill them on defense? |
12:10 |
: Uh, looks like the plan is to have a first baseman in the corner out there. No other way to look at that Hart/Smoak/Morrison grouping, I think.
|
12:11 |
Hello Eno We have been in a 14 team 5*5 roto league for the past 9 years. This year we are loosing 2 owners. So now being 12 teams we are going head to head points total. We are looking at differnet scoring system. Is their one scoring system you could suggest or where could we go see different scoring system.Thank you |
12:11 |
: I’ve actually never heard of something like this. Might be an interesting post. I’ll try to write that for you soon.
|
12:11 |
I’ve always been dissuaded from buying beers in DFH’s Ancient Ales series because of opportunity costs. Are there any that are definitely worth the money over comparably priced and reliably excellent beers? |
12:12 |
: For the most part, I don’t like them! Can’t remember one I liked. I know, I know, people like them. But I don’t!
|
12:12 |
worse fantasy stat: Wins or Saves? |
12:13 |
: If by worse, you mean which one causes us more anguish as we pick up and drop stupid players and play waiver wire hawk and try to prognosticate silly manager moves… obviously saves. But you know what? That stuff is kinda fun too.
|
12:13 |
Guererro, Kendrick, or Dozier to fill a 2B hole in a deep dynasty? |
12:14 |
: Down on Guerrero. Might be a .250/18/0 kinda guy. Rather have Dozier actually. If he irons out the IFFB problem, he’s great! If not, he’s okay. Kendrick costs more and is over-rated. He’s the safest if the costs are actually equal.
|
12:14 |
Quick Question: Jose Abreu – Should the Nats have signed him..all the projections from Steamers to Baseball Forecaster predict good things. Seems like the Sox got a great deal at 6 year 68 mil. |
12:14 |
: Just published a piece on this RIGHT NOW. I think the Nationals were more interested in smaller pieces with less variability.
|
12:15 |
Which 2013 international signing are you most pumped to see from a fantasy standpoint in 2014? (besides Tanaka, Abreu) |
12:15 |
: so… Guerrero or Urrutia? Who am I missing?
|
12:16 |
how many innings do you think Jose Fernandez throws this year? You were high on him last year, like a good wheat beer. Who do you think highly of this spring? |
12:17 |
: I think JF can throw 185-190, so might just get skipped a few times, or shut down at end of season. Almost no limit. Young arm that might have a role and run with it? There’s Paxton. I’ll be jumping into my rankings and players a bit more when I’m done editing FG+.
|
12:17 |
Is Danny Hultzen worth holding onto for a dynasty… or is he a bust from injury. |
12:17 |
: probably worth keeping still.
|
12:17 |
What might Junior Lake’s role be with the Cubs this year? any reason to think they are high on him? |
12:18 |
: I think he’s going to get a ton of playing time. I might be super inefficient in real life, but the Cubs don’t have a ton of options *right away.* Obviously, Soler, Almora on the way, but they’ll want to either pump up Lake value for trade for SP, or see if he can help at all. Bryant might end up in OF too because he was pretty bad at third when I saw him. So I’d give Lake at least the first half of the season, and he could hit .260 with double-digit homers and steals, and if he does that, I think he’ll hang on to a job somewhere for a bit.
|
12:18 |
: Very interesting player tho
|
12:19 |
How valuable is Harper at $13 in his final contract year? Would you deal him for Yelich $5 (two years more at $9, $14) and Abreu $11 (two more years at $15, $20)? |
12:21 |
: Yelich strikes out a bit much… Abreu could hit .270… if you’re going to win this year, or are in it, I’d keep him. Otherwise… Yelich at a smaller price is interesting.
|
12:21 |
Dear Eno, whenever I hear you talking about beer, all I can think of is this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWBV7yKWhWE |
12:21 |
Have you seen the Trout jumping video? If you were the Angels, would you already be on the phone? Impressive, but scary if he falls. |
12:22 | : VIDEO Interlude |
12:22 |
Will Kolten Wong be afforded a little latitude from the Cardinals in case he slumps a little at 2B? He’s probably the 8th most important hitter in the lineup, right? |
12:22 |
: Yeah maybe like a half-season. When it gets to August, and it’s tight…
|
12:22 |
Hi Eno. Thoughts on Seth Maness going forward? Will he start again or be relegated to the bullpen? |
12:22 |
: Too many starters there. He’s in the pen, or traded to start.
|
12:23 |
Just traded for Allen Craig in 4×4 ottoneu. What are your thoughts on him this year? |
12:23 |
: Better in 4×4 where his extreme lack of speed doesn’t matter much. He’s older than most people think and I doubt he hits more than 25 again. But good batting average, 20ish homers… good player.
|
12:23 |
Can you please explain to me negative values? Some website projects Machado and Headley as the 20 and 21st ranked 3B and worth -2$ in a standard 12 team league. Does that mean no one should be starting them? |
12:23 |
: Check the settings. You might be in a deeper league.
|
12:24 |
Would you give Will Venable a 50% chance of going 20-20 again? |
12:25 |
: Yea little bit better. 55? He started pulling the ball more to take advantage of the new fences.
|
12:25 |
Its a new era in Cover-It Live Eno chats so bring your A games, people! |
12:25 |
: Seems about the same here. Should we do something NEW MEDIA ISH to celebrate? How about a poll?
|
12:26 |
Going to LA this spring, and going to hit up San Francisco while I’m there. Any brewery or beer recommendations? Is San Diego worth a trip too? |
12:27 |
: If you can get to SD, it’s awesome, much better than LA. Gotta go for Ballast Point, Stone and AleSmith (Alpine is a bit of a trek). Closer to LA, been loving El Segundo’s beers, but that’s a bit south too. LA has fathers’ office for beer, just a bar. SF — 21A is okay, but if the Almanac room is open, go. Russian River two hours north…
|
12:27 |
How would you adjust keeper/dynasty rankings/strategies for contract leagues? I’m in a roto league with 12 teams, auction for contracts that go 1 to 5 years, and also milb farm with unlimited keepers and a 5 round draft. |
12:28 |
: Gotta do inflation, meaning the players remaining in your pool are worth a bit more because the players that are owned are likely owned under value and that means more money is on the table. Chad Young is doing ottoneu auction values for FG+ again, and he has a heck of a time with inflation values.
|
12:28 |
Tanaka ends up… |
12:29 |
: Dodgers get $40m off of the roster after next year, it could work for them. Yankees… I’m *pretty sure* they don’t care about $189m, but they are right there… under-reported aspect of Yankees and that number: rev sharing dies in 2016… they could just fight it in the CBA. So I’ll guess Yankees.
|
12:29 |
Were you on Clubhouse Confidential? |
12:30 |
: Radio show. Talking steroids and Piazza, which is like talking about one of your favorite players extramarital affairs if you ask me.
|
12:30 |
Have you selected your Opening Day lineup of beer yet? Will you release this lineup prior to the first day of the season? and if you had to exchange Beer Lineups at home plate, who would you like to be the Home Plate Umpire that day? |
12:31 |
: Greg Koch from Stone is at the plate. Enjoy By is in the lineup, somewhere. Rest of the lineup awaits my pencil. This will be a BG piece.
|
12:31 |
Several bigger market teams need a second baseman. Do you think any are calling Doug Melvin about Rickie Weeks? Decent ceiling, but injury problems – decent fit for yankees? elsewhere? How much of $11M would/could Milwaukee pick up? |
12:31 |
: Weeks more attractive than Uggla, if just for age. And smaller price tag. Might not have to pick up much. He couldn’t be a two-win guy??
|
12:31 |
Yesterday, DC said he would pursue a deal for Didi Gregorius if he were the Mets. You haven’t once embraced that idea whenever it’s come up. Any new thoughts there regarding SS for the Mets? Again, I just see no way the Snakes are going to carry 3 shortstops on their OD roster. They can move Owings to AAA but that won’t be any more than a temporary move. Sandy, your move. |
12:33 |
: Hold on… I said it’s fine. I just want to know the price. Is it Syndergaard-plus? It took Bauer to get Didi, and he’ll remember that. I absolutely want the Mets to talk to the D-backs, and get the cheapest guy back.
|
12:33 |
Enus: All the flavor and experience of a real Eno, in a convenient, portable pouch. |
12:33 |
: unfortunate rhymes for your product there tho
|
12:33 |
I’ve missed several of your chats lately and you probably answered this before, What are your thoughts on Tanaka? I like the guy, but with the posting changes he’s slated to get alot more money per year than previous Japanese players. If he falls farther towards the Dice-K end of the spectrum than the Darvish end he could be a real albatross. |
12:34 |
: I like him, not as much as Yu, but more than Dice-K. I think he could be a younger Kuroda. Only problem is — how flat is the fastball. If it’s a fat one, he’ll need to be in the NL, and even then… Good news is, he’s no Tim Lincecum. Excellent fastball control, a devastating splitter… it works. I doubt he’ll be an albatross, even if he’s not an ace.
|
12:35 |
Lyrics: Maybe we always saw right through each other anyway but Eno we never really knew each other anyway. |
12:35 |
: Geez, this is a terrible comment on my relationship with my mother lol. I was thinking a bit more about the title.
|
12:36 |
: Also, I was super pumped at first, and it’s good to know most of y’all care a bit about beer, but the not at alls are gaining a bit.
|
12:36 |
With the money he’s making Kershaw can get me a gift. |
12:36 |
: A game started. Just for you.
|
12:36 |
Where do you think George Springer starts the year? Will he split it between AAA and the Majors, or does he get a roster spot out of spring training? |
12:37 |
: In minors. I’m really worried about his K%, his team has to be a bit worried, and they have a full OF, at least to check out for a month-plus.
|
12:37 |
Adam Eaton? Buying? how many SBs do you see, and can he keep his BA north of .285 |
12:37 |
: I’d project him for .270/10/20 to be safe, which is ugly, but I do think he has more upside. Seems like Rick Hahn loves him.
|
12:38 |
I thought the new Archer was pretty bad. Thoughts? |
12:38 |
: Well, the Deus Ex Machina at the end of the episode was jarring, holy hell, but it was episode one of a new series, basically. Just trying to tell us where we are going. Still some fun moments — BEAKER’s BOSS!
|
12:39 |
You may have not realized, but I believe FSWA is announcing the winners today. Good luck on your FSWA nomination, Eno! |
12:39 |
: Oh now I’m actually nervous.
|
12:39 |
Any thoughts on Marcell Ozuna going forward? |
12:40 |
: I like him. He strikes out a bit much, but so does Yelich. Doesn’t have the same pedigree, so he’ll be cheap. Has power and speed, and yeah home park will soften his impact… Great bench pick in mixed leagues IMO.
|
12:40 |
Does Zunino get the majority of the ABs in Seattle? 20+ HRs if so? What is a ceiling for him? |
12:41 |
: Not sure he can hit the curveball yet. Bad batting average this year, probably. Ceiling is great, but percentage likelihood he attains it dropping.
|
12:41 |
Did Pat Rapp Wrap his Bat? |
12:41 |
: LETS ASK PA RAPPA
|
12:41 |
Why did it sound like someone was eating a hoagie during the Larry Schechter interview? |
12:42 |
: I. Don’t. Know?
|
12:42 |
I’m thinking alter ego. Enus Sriracha, favorite team: The Braves, favorite beer: Gennesse Cream, favorite musician: Brittany Spears. |
12:42 |
: I HATE ENUS SRIRACHA AND YET I LOVE SRIRACHA
|
12:42 |
Does Appel debut this year? When do you think they call him up? How good can he be? |
12:43 |
: He’s really close. He spent the extra year getting that changeup ready and just tore up the lower minors like he should have. I think he’s in Double-A to start the year, and the only reason he doesn’t come up is to keep him cheap longer. He’s got great fastballs, great control, a strong slurve, and a decent changeup. That changeup matters a lot because he can’t get by on the slurve alone against lefties.
|
12:43 |
Corrected Hhadline via MLBTR: “Mets Settle for Ruben Tejada” |
12:44 |
: After making fun of him publicly last year. Sigh.
|
12:44 |
I’m gonna be in Miami for the season opener will Fernandez be the starter? |
12:44 |
: Only reason not to is if they think they can sell more tickets to game two plus game one if he starts the second one.
|
12:44 |
Is Rendon going to be the everyday 2B for the Nats? What kind of line do you see with everyday Abs? |
12:45 |
: Yes. I like him. A little more than the projectiosn. I think he could .280 with 20 homers.
|
12:45 |
Let’s play a game like Date, Marry, **** except it will be Trade, Keep, Drop: Segura, Brad Miller, Ackley |
12:45 |
: You got it in the right order. Unless someone’s willing to give you something really nice for Miller, Segura’s got the most value, Miller is sneaky good, and Ackley yuck yuck.
|
12:45 |
Does Heyward bounce back? 25 and 10 realistic? What about that AVG |
12:45 |
: .275. Yup.
|
12:46 |
Are the Orioles really losing out on Machado not playing SS? |
12:46 |
: Hardy’s a good defensive shortstop.
|
12:46 |
estimates for Chris Young’s season? Do you think he has a 20-20 season in him? if so, do you thing the Mets make a QO? do you think there is a *handshake deal* that he’ll turn down a QO? |
12:47 |
: No. I think he’ll mostly platoon with other Young. Maybe play 50% of the time.
|
12:47 |
This guy I know just said he rather have Colon and Kuroda instead of Kershaw. |
12:47 |
: wut. Age matters.
|
12:47 |
Long time listener, first time caller.Who do you think gets more starts this year, Yordano Ventura or Carlos Martinez? Thanks. |
12:48 |
: And I thought you’d get weirder than that with your first salvo. More starts? Ventura. C-Mart has wicked splits and doesn’t have the third pitch, or hasn’t shown it. He may not. Both of these guys are super intriguing. Might be over-rated by velocity. Ventura’s secondary pitches … suck. Right now at least.
|
12:48 |
Is Goldie really gonna be a to o 5 pick I drafted him in the 5th end last yr? |
12:48 |
: Yes.
|
12:49 |
![]() How do you feel about Drungo Hazewood? |
12:49 |
: God, like anything is possible. Like I might hit a homer and steal two bases tonight and have a group of women throwing their panties at me.
|
12:49 |
How much do I build off of my 2013 numbers? |
12:50 |
: As much as you improve your GB/FB, which you wouldn’t talk to me about, you dick. Seriously. You can’t hit more than 20-25 homers annually without a bit more loft. Maybe you don’t care. But your fantasy owners will care when you stop stealing bases.
|
12:50 |
: wow. I’m at 12:08. gotta push it a bit here.
|
12:50 |
Lots of talk recently about hitter/pitcher mixes. Does it seem to make sense to go Stars and Scrubs with pitchers and then middle priced valued hitters? |
12:51 |
: Gotta get some star hitters too, but maybe that’s the way to go. I just remember Chad Young finding that $10 guys were the best sleepers in ottoneu, I think. I might try to go with two $20-25 pitchers and then a bunch of $5-10s. True dollar guys kinda suck.

Cubs’ fans didn’t get much work done this morning. |
12:51 |
I want in on a league w/ TDA/Gattis sidebets going on |
12:52 |
Choose a catcher for 2014: Lucroy, Castro, Gattis |
12:52 |
: In that order. Love Lucroy’s K%.
|
12:52 |
see any bounce back in willingham this year? last year he was average for him, then had some sort of knee issue and never seemed to get back into form. |
12:52 |
: A bounce-back to make him relevant in OBP, deeper 5OF leagues, but he’s old now.
|
12:52 |
Your moms is a Wilco fan? |
12:53 |
: Well, no, but I am, and the lyrics are slightly relevant to a woman that left Germany to see the world.
|
12:53 |
Kershaw is going to make about $10k per pitch for the next five years. |
12:53 |
OMG Cubs Prospects, WE GOT WOOD! |
12:53 |
what’s the platoon situation in AZ outfield this year? ross/parra with pollack and trumbo starting everyday. or pollock/parra and ross trumbo everyday? |
12:53 |
: Ross is the most platoon-y… along with Pollock. I think Pollock/Ross platoon with Parra playing every day, sometimes in center.
|
12:54 |
% chance Salazar gets exposed and struggles w/ his limited repertoire and tendency to pitch up in the zone? |
12:54 |
: Hey. I like his change and his slider, even if the slider is second best. he just needs to get down in the zone a bit, yes, and also stop throwing the FB on FB counts all the damn time.
|
12:54 |
Favorite IPA? |
12:55 |
: Something in the group that is Enjoy By, Lagunitas Sucks, AleSmith, Green Flash West Coast, and Firestone Walker Double Jack. Yes I know some are DIPAs.

I live in MA. First US Trappist Brewery about 20 mi from me begins selling next week. /does JPM’s dance |

Abreu is crazy to try and project, and it looks like the DTs overestimate OBP, but his number basically blow everyone else out of the water. The SLG and OBP are massively better than anyone else….I so want him to come over and be an immediate superstar. |
12:56 |
: Yeah if you sort the table on my piece, Abreu comes in with the highest everything … BA, OBP, SLG… so yeah, the best hitter to every come out of Cuba.
|
12:56 |
I think I love to hate W/SV and to a lesser extent BA. These are the toughest categories to predict so perhaps there is the most “arbitrage” as you like to put it in them when you’re in a very competitive league? |
12:56 |
: Yeah they are impossible! Which is great!
|
12:56 |
I think Vitters is going to play LF this year. He killed it in AAA at age 22-23. What do you think about that? |
12:56 |
: not a ton. Don’t love him.
|
12:57 |
I dont know how youd do it, maybe using crowdsourcing, but if you could add Price to your BeerGraphs table it would make things very interesting |
12:57 |
: We want price so bad.
|
12:58 |
About what round do I draft J. Abreu? |
12:58 |
: Just did an industry mock and he went 10.130. It’s early. He should go way earlier than that.
|
12:58 |
How does Billy Beane do it every year? Wouldn’t you think that after this many years players other GMs would get wise to him and demand more $ or not deal with him? Just saying if your sitting at the table and you don’t know who the patsy is–its you. |
12:58 |
: He’s selling young, cheap pitching… that’s DRUGS to GMs.
|
12:58 |
Soooooo Price just got a one year extension to avoid arbitration?? |
12:59 |
: yeah he’s going to leave eventually. Thought it would be this year.
|
12:59 |
Why do projections seem down on Nats across the board? Team projections have them far behind the Braves. Not even a close race this year? |
12:59 |
: No, I picked the Braves last year and I’ll take the Nats this year. I think Harper will surpass projections and that they improved their depth, which was a huge problem last year.
|
12:59 |
I need to know what bar in Philly that is!!!! |
12:59 |
: Help him out.
|

Take a look at Brett Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury’s batted ball profile (GB, FB, LD). Twins I tell ya! Twins! |
1:00 |
: Cash likes something there.
|
1:00 |
Mike Olt (STEVE HOLT) said yesterday his eye issues have been sorted out. If he wins the 3B job in Chicago and gets 500 ABs, what should we expect from him? |
1:00 |
: Low batting average, great power, maybe good enough D to push Bryant to OF.
|
1:01 |
I’m up in my slow draft, timely chat, help me decide who to take! Roster is currently Price, Greinke, Posey, HanRam, JUp, Harper, (in positional number order for convenience). Looking at one of these five: Kinsler, Pujols, Moore, Verlander, Pedro Alvarez. What does Eno think? |
1:01 |
: I liked Verlander before the injury, you have plenty pitchers though for this point in draft, Kinsler old, so I’m all over Pujols this low.
|
1:01 |
Lonnie Chisenhall was pretty terrible w/ his chances at the ML level in 2013(.225/.270/.398; 11 HR/35 RBI’s). Over under on Lonnie’s Line: .254/.310/.432 16 HR / 62 RBI’s? |
1:02 |
: Slightly under, but close enough for horseshoes and hand grenades.
|
1:02 |
I have Anibal for $10 in ottoneu. I don’t think his value will ever be higher than it is right now, but I also think I can probably get #2 type production out of him on the cheap for the next 3 years or so. Should I try to trade him, or just keep him? If trade, what sort of return should I aim for? |
1:02 |
: I’d trade him. I think the shoulder injury last year was ominous, he’s throwing more junk every year, and he’s a SLAP survivor. Go get a ransom.
|
1:02 |
Wins seem more frustrating to me than saves. A least if your closer gets the job done, he gets the save. On the other hand, you can lose a complete game. Say whaaaaaaaaaaat!?! |
1:02 |
Already having the first pick in my dynasty draft and taking Abreu, would you trade Chris Archer for the 2nd pick to take Tanaka? Archer and Tanaka are the same age. |
1:03 |
: I’m worried about Archer going this long and just having that changeup. I take Tanaka.
|
1:03 |
I’ve asked some of your colleagues this, but I’ll ask you as well. Do you think the bench is currently undervalued by teams, and how important is it to wins? |
1:04 |
: I tried to write a post about studying depth, and it’s impossible. But it does seem that the top part of your roster is slightly more important. Once you get to that part of the win curve where every win matters, then you need a bench. In other words, if the A’s didn’t have great pitching, their bench wouldn’t matter. And the Nationals…well they needed a better bench last year.
|
1:04 |
i had high hopes for slade heathcott in ny, but with ellsbury signed long term is he nothing but a trade piece based on potential? |
1:04 |
: yeah he’ll be traded, probably.
|
1:04 |
Who’s hair is better, mine or yours? |
1:05 |
: Thinking of a massive change in that department. With a baby boy… long hair takes too long.
|
1:05 |
where does garza end up? angels? seems like that would be a great fit.. fantasy and real life. |
1:05 |
: Would be, but there are dominoes that have to fall. 1/24… and then you’ll see some pitcher signings.
|
1:05 |
Tommy La Stella start at 2B in ATL this year? |
1:05 |
: Not to begin the year, not unless he kills it in spring.
|
1:05 |
is jaime garcia able to lockdown a rotation spot in stl? lots of competition.. |
1:06 |
: He’s interesting to me. Shoulder problems suck, but he has great stuff, tons of GBs, I bet they start him if he’s healthy.
|
1:06 |
Blue Jays just solved their 2B problem: signed Chris Getz. Ugh. |
1:06 |
: OH NOES
|
1:06 |
Is Rizzo worth keeping this year in 5×5 with the hopes he improves against lefties? |
1:07 |
: Yes. yes. Yes! His peripherals against lefties were NOT that terrible. and his overall K% and ISO reflect a .275+ 25+ hr hitter.
|
1:07 |
Javier Baez is rated as the # 1 SS prospect in all of minor league baseball, yet, he still strikes out more than once in every four plate appearances at A+/AA. Is his BUST potential rising?..comment while imbibing the wonders of a Sinkiang Black Beer, please. (BTW: It’s been said that you will enjoy drinking this particular beer enough to do so in a muslim restaurant) |
1:07 |
: LOL. Yes. Bad K% in prospects give me the willies. I know some figure it out, but it puts them in a bad bust bin.
|
1:07 |
Am I the only one worried about the left half of the Red Sox infield if Drew doesn’t settle for a return? Bogaerts is hugely talented and has a bright future, but he’s still a 21-year-old rookie. And Middlebrooks has a career .294 OBP and ugly plate discipline. They don’t even have a solid backup (Herrera) |
1:08 |
: I actually think Drew returns. Dunno why they arguing so long.
|
1:08 |
Will Jordy Mercer start the entire year for the Pirates. Is he at all interesting fantasy-wise as a 1$ flier? |
1:08 |
: Yes interesting as a flier. Start all year? Hmm. Defense isn’t great. But could be good enough.
|
1:08 |
Would it be considered cruel of you to respond to a question about “how do you think X-Player will do this year? after I just traded for him” by responding.. “..Oh, that’s too bad, he’s just left on a two year mission to Chile to help the endangered condors..”? |
1:08 |
Start a franchise with one position player not named after a fish (so Mike Carp is OUT)…. |
1:09 |
I went to a beer rally and an MLB chat broke out. |
1:09 |
The Enoites have spoken…now no one can complain about beer questions in chat. |
1:09 |
: Well it looks like a quarter of them can complain interlude.
|
1:09 |
Thoughts on Starlin Castro for 2014? |
1:09 |
: .280/10/15!
|
1:09 |
Do you think Lindor will contribute to fantasy in anyway when he reaches the majors? |
1:09 |
: he really could, just based on an okay batting average!
|
1:09 |
How many PA’s do you see Eric Young Jr getting this year? |
1:09 |
: 375
|
1:10 |
Not a craft beer, but have you noticed the wild oscillation of quality between various batches of Red Stripe? |
1:10 |
: So some taste better than beach hop water?
|
1:10 |
Thoughts on Freddie Freeman for 2014? |
1:10 |
: Samesies.
|
1:10 |
talk of john jaso being the dh in oakland, believe it? |
1:10 |
: Yup! He’s not good at catching.
|
1:10 |
Are catchers in baseball kinda like kickers in football? You know, take them late, at the end? |
1:10 |
: Yes I think so. There’s like ten guys that could hit .260 with 18 homers.
|
1:10 |
Thoughts on Pedro Alvarez for 2014? |
1:10 |
: Ks and HRs.
|
1:11 |
If we assume 500 PAs and a .280 OBP for Billy Hamilton, say he gets the GO SIGN 80% of the time, at an 80% success rate, that’s 90 SB. That’s incredibly valuable, right? Where am I going wrong here? |
1:11 |
: The risk he doesn’t keep the job with a .280 OBP.
|
1:11 |
does the new CiL have any new fancy features? I put on the 3D glasses but nothing is happening. |
1:11 |
: Seems the same here, but dunno
|
1:11 |
Chris Davis stole 1 base in 2011, 2 bases in 2012, and 4 in 2013. So, he will definitely steal 8 this year, right? |
1:11 |
: MATH
|
1:11 |
Bruery might be worth a visit if you’re in LA |
1:11 |
: sorry yes they are good
|
1:11 |
Do you see a lot of Wisconsin beers (other than Leines) on the left coast? Central Waters, O’so, Lakefront, etc. |
1:11 |
: Nope!
|
1:12 |
rutledge or lehmieu? |
1:12 |
: In fantasy, Rut rut for sure. Problem is, in real life, probably DJLM.
|
1:12 |
Are there any general rules you tend to follow when drafting in a roto league? ex. try to get 80 hrs/80 steals in your first 5 picks, no pitchers early, etc. |
1:13 |
: I generally try to get a bottom-tier top-12 SP and a top-tier #2, so that usually happens in rounds three through seven. I only do this because I want to get two chances at CY-type performance, and I think there are about 20ish pitchers that can do that any given year. Otherwise, mostly just value. I don’t even focus as heavily on the MI as I used to.
|
1:13 |
Who would you rather have in an NL-only: Medlen for $18 or Corbin for $10? |
1:14 |
: Corbin, even with his lack of a changeup. $8 probably gets you a decent pitcher to reduce your risk.
|
1:14 |
Hi Eno. Did you know they closed down the original location on Old Middlefield? I’m bummed. The other locations don’t quite taste the same… |
1:14 |
: Was my favorite burrito… so sad.
|
1:14 |
Any good bars in SFO I can check out during my 2hr layover tomorrow? |
1:14 |
: damn IN SFO? I don’t normally drink there, just pass through. You’ll find Anchor Steam at least.
|
1:15 |
Back to the negative values, in general should you try as hard as possible to avoid starting guys projected to earn negative dollars? |
1:15 |
: Yes.
|
1:15 |
: I doubt our values go that far with Manny.
|
1:15 |
What about a trade of three years of either Logan Morrison or Justin Smoak for three years (and three option years) of Jose Tabata? Pittsburgh could use help at first base and Travis Snider can cover rightfield until Gregory Polanco is ready. Seattle reportedly is in the market for a righthand-hitting defensively competent outfielder. |
1:16 |
: Doubt it’s Morrison, or the Pirates would have traded with the Marlins. Kinda doubt people want Smoak after one good year.
|
1:16 |
not like rhymes ever stopped Venus and they make women’s clothes and swimwear. Not to be confused with Venus razors made by Gillette, of course, which are aimed at women. This is starting to seem intentional |
1:16 |
More likely to end up with a rotation spot to start the year, Rafael Montero or Marcus Stroman? |
1:16 |
: Stroman. and I like him!
|
1:16 |
I’m at the stage where I sort of know what I’m doing in German, but I still can’t express a lot of things, or understand a lot that I read, and can’t speak or follow movies for a lick. It’s a frustrating stage. |
1:17 |
: Yeah, and I was going to try and learn spanish this offseason. At least you’re ahead of me.
|
1:17 |
re: Didi, obviously the Mets aren’t dealing Noah. The price being a top ten pitching prospect bc it took Bauer to acquire Didi doesn’t make that the price now. Prices are a function of market forces. DBacks can either hold out for a steep price and wind up not making a deal and having a SS glut on their roster or take a deal that they can make. Towers does’t appear to be the type to hold out just on principal. |
1:18 |
: So, fine. I like it. It’s all about cost. And yes, Towers actually seems the opposite: ready to jettison players he’s soured on. So it’s a chance for arbitrage.
|
1:18 |
I would care a lot more about craft beer if a majority of my income didn’t go toward student loan payments 🙁 |
1:18 |
: dude I’m STILL there.
|
1:18 |
I like craft beer more than “some” but less than “a lot”. How do I check-in on a beer on beergraphs? I search the leaderboard when looking for beers at the store, but i dont assume that’s checking in… |
1:18 |
: We’re not there yet. We get our data from Untappd if you’d like to contribute to the leaderboards.
|
1:18 |
Did you hear that the Trappist monks of Spencer, MA have started brewing beer? http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/2014/01/16/mass-monks-brewing-beer-like-european-brothers/0ZZJLHMRk43abxhaeHG2VP/story.html |
1:19 |
: I think someone referenced that earlier in the chat, but thanks for the link!
|
1:19 |
Keeper league: Yellich or Boegaerts? Thanks. |
1:19 |
: Xander a million times Xander.
|
1:19 |
: Oh Xander my Xander.
|
1:19 |
Bizarre Roster Choices: Marcell Ozuna or Brad Peacock? |
1:19 |
: Peacock actually surprised me, we talked about him in a podcast, and I like the slider. But I’d rather have the position player. Especially since Astros in AL.
|
1:20 |
Nova or Kuroda? |
1:20 |
: Dynasty, Nova. Otherwise, even with the new mix, Kuroda.
|
1:20 |
What is Darwin Barney’s trade value? Organizational filler? Low level, high risk prospect? |
1:21 |
: We argued about this, Darwin and I, and I thought he could be valuable as a backup/d-first MI, he was skeptical. He might have been right.
|
1:21 |
I nominated you for “Best Possible Eno”, but they refused the nomination. Some kind of nonsense about there not being an award. |
1:21 |
: Jeez.
|
1:21 |
Seien Sie nicht nervös, Eno. Oder kann ich dir “du” rufen? Die Fragen der Fremdsprachen, ja? |
1:21 |
: Du gehts.
|
1:22 |
Is Ozuna going to play over Marisnick though? |
1:22 |
: I think so yes.
|
1:22 |
Seems like Danny Salazar has been thrown aboard the hype train. Not that he isn’t good, but he’s being ranked awfully high for a guy who threw 50-some MLB innings. What are baseline expectations for him? I ask because I’ve got him at $13 in a 10-team AL-only and have been offer $6 Peavy or $5 Martin Perez for him. |
1:23 |
: I wouldn’t take Perez because I just don’t see it yet. Not in the pitch peripherals. Peavy? Cheaper… way less upside IMO. It’s not crazy, but I bet the hype goes another level and you could get more.
|
1:23 |
Cigar City is finally distributing White Oak Jai Ali and Humidor IPA again! |
1:23 |
is Jose fernandez a tad overated? the BABIP isnt promising, and the walk rate isnt that promising |
1:23 |
: The K% is great, the changeup is his third pitch and had nice peripherals, the velocity and youth are there… Dunno if he needs to go top five, but top 14 or so for sure.
|
1:24 |
I was offered Ruf at $1 for my $10 Kenley Jansen in a 5 x 5 10 team NL only keeper league with 4 years of ‘keeps’ remaining at $3 per year. On a scale of 1-10, how obnoxious is this trade offer? |
1:24 |
: It’s Rufian I mean Ruthian level obnoxious.
|
1:24 |
Are slurves usually more curvy or slidery? Does it depend on LHP vs. RHP? |
1:24 |
: Slurves are flatter and more side-to-side than round-house curves.
|
1:24 |
And lo, we must homebrew a Sriracha beer and name it Enus; thus it is written, thus it shall be done. |
1:24 |
What do you expect from Kipnis this year? Seeing a lot of buzz for him but he really came back to earth in the 2nd half last year. |
1:25 |
: yeah he’s done that twice now, and I don’t care. I think he might be the best 2B in the game this year. .280/25/25 or so.
|
1:25 |
Are you really 45 minutes behind today? Increasingly popular… |
1:25 |
: 12:46. Guess people are starting to look at their teams again.
|
1:26 |
Just back back to NorCal from Miami. Surprised by beer selection over there. Please explain why hotel bar had Left Hand Milk Stout and Greenflash IPA and a random liquor store had Dogfish Head! |
1:26 |
: I had the same feeling in Florida. DFH has most of the east coast on lock down though. And we get it in Cali… so not so surprising.
|
1:26 |
5×5 Keeper league rankings? Abreu, Adams, Hosmer, Belt, Trumbo |
1:27 |
: good one. tough without having run em. hosmer, belt, trumbo, adams… abreu… first or second.
|
1:28 |
I see the all new and improved Cover-It Live still can’t tell the difference between a hyperlink and a forgotten space after a period.WTF |
1:28 |
Is there any hope left for Moustakas? |
1:28 |
: His team says he’ll still be he starter?
|
1:28 |
if CYoung is just going to platoon then what was point of the Mets signing him at all, more importantly not getting at least an option for another year or two if he has a renaissance year? |
1:30 |
: True. That’s why I had him over 50%. He might start the season as more of an every-day guy to see if he could return a draft pick, but I’m not sure he’s really good enough any more to get to that level.
|
1:30 |
All my stats be better, worse, about the same as 2013? |
1:30 |
: A bit worse.
|
1:31 |
Hey Eno, love the chats. I am in a 16 team, deep rostered dynasty points team and have been stumped with a trade offer: my Teheran and Billy Hamilton (in a league that provides a lot of emphasis on steals) for his McCann and Lester, with a pick thrown in from his side for good measure. Thoughts? |
1:31 |
: You’ve got the young guys with upside. Lester’s not a 1 any more, even with the bounce back. Almost 30. Again, I think the Hamilton hype will continue to embeggin, you might get a better offer.
|
1:32 |
Should we expect much more than a .850 OPS from Chris Davis? Really cooled down in the second half and that HR/FB really jumps off the page… |
1:32 |
: I think the BA will drop. Still Ks a ton.
|
1:32 |
Does the Panda excel in his contract year? He’s lost 42 lbs! |
1:33 |
: He says we’ll know the exact number later. So it could be more! I know contract years is not really a thing, but I have seen that PAs are up in FA years, and that’s a big deal for him. He’ll try to stay on the field as much as he can.
|
1:33 |
Pollock and Ross both bat RHed tho…. |
1:35 |
: Dammit. That is a problem. Well…. They’re the platoon guys… I guess then it’s Parra/Pollock in CF, Ross gets days off somtiems. Parra plays 75% of the time, Ross 70%, Pollock 50%? It’s a mess, is what i’m saying, and none of them have a great deal of upside in mixed leagues.
|
1:35 |
i never look to buy 22s, just beers that come in four and six packs. how many great beers am i missing out on limiting myself to packs? |
1:35 |
: A lot. The more innovative beers come out in 22s first. Also, I never by sixers of something unless I know it’s good. five beers I don’t want to drink is so depressing.
|
1:36 |
Please order: S Gray, G. Cole, S Miller, Cashner, Ryu, Cigrani |
1:37 |
: Oooh fun. Cole first by a mile. Cashner ahead of Gray on talent and situation, behind on health. Miller and Ryu both awesome… but i’ll take Miller’s velocity. Cingrani last just because I dunno how he can do it with one pitch.
|
1:37 |
So generally speaking, in a 12-teamer, you are taking 2 SP in first 8/9 rounds? |
1:37 |
: yes.
|
1:37 |
Beer event at Bishop’s Collar, on Fairmount near 23rd |
1:37 |
: PHILLY GO GET RUSSIAN RIVER
|
1:37 |
Cameron sullied your good name yesterday. You should check it out |
1:38 |
: I have a good name? Well I do like “Eno”… it’s the “Kama” as a middle name that I was never wild about. Kama Sutra, mom, really??
|
1:38 |
Stephen Drew is the ultimate replacement level fantasy SS. He ends up on about 6 teams in every league every year |
1:38 |
Can Sonny Gray be top 15 SP in an AL only league? Is he the real deal? Is the curveball that good? |
1:39 |
: yeah but the change and approach against lefties is a little worrisome.
|
1:39 |
Does Straily stick in the rotation? |
1:39 |
: yes. His slider is really good, his fastball good enough, his changeup better than bad. Actually, it’s about average vs LHB. All he needs is a better two-seamer, which I think he can improve as he loses velocity. I like him.
|
1:40 |
Pirates fan here. Mercer will be in an offense/defense platoon with Clint Barmes, similar to end of last year. No one is pushing for time from him, though, as Hanson won’t be ready til 2015, so the only wrench could be if the Pirates make a very unexpected signing for Drew or Mercer flops and they make a deal into the season. |
1:40 |
: Only problem is Hanson is no good at D and might be a 2B. And Barmes a negative with bat. So I think there’s daylight in there for Mercer.
|
1:40 |
Why are there suddenly so many hipsters in fantasy sports writing?! I’m drowning! |
1:40 |
: Hey I was into it before it was cool. /hipsterd
|
1:41 |
What are your thoughts on Arcia? Twins don’t platoon, could that be bad for him? |
1:41 |
: Power-only in a bad park for it…
|
1:41 |
Did you know everyone’s BOLD predictions are horrible as a rule of thumb? |
1:41 |
: We bat about .300.
|
1:41 |
Who has more quality starts in 2014 Paxton Walker? |
1:41 |
: Walker. But Paxton seems underrated.
|
1:42 |
How difficult is projecting Jose Abreu? |
1:42 |
: Got a whole post on it.
|
1:42 |
You ever listen to 90s punk/ska? |
1:42 |
: RBF FTW.
|
1:42 |
What is taveras’s swing described as violent? Seems that would be a common description for any swing |
1:42 |
: you’d think he’d have a higher K% if so.
|
1:43 |
About where is Adams going in your mocks thus far? |
1:43 |
: He went 7.95 in the one I ran. Ahead of Abreu. Dunno about that. I think Adams’ BA will tank as he gets shifted more.
|
1:43 |
What do you think A-Rod will do for the remainder of his career (age 39-41 seasons)? |
1:44 |
: Be a nuisance to the Yankees, show up, hit maybe 25-35 more homers?
|
1:44 |
I have decided the combination of reliable power, batting average upside, and the horribly unreliable back of the first end make Encarnacion a first-round player. I reject you and your advice to the contrary. I’m hoping to pair Davis at 9-10 and Encarnacion after the turn. |
1:44 |
: Collette convinced me of the same. He’s a first-rounder.
|
1:44 |
Do you think my family would mind if I decided to become a monk to brew(drink) beer for the rest of my life? |
1:44 |
: They’d be mad about the grandkid situation.
|
1:44 |
Sidenote: My girlfriend that works at Ballast Point broke up with me Monday night. Bye bye free beer. Commiserate! |
1:44 |
: Truly sad.
|
1:45 |
: Oh! I got an important call coming up! Gotta go!
|
1:45 |
![]() Ha-HA! |
1:45 |
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO |
1:45 |
: See you guys next week.

With a phone full of pictures of pitchers' fingers, strange beers, and his two toddler sons, Eno Sarris can be found at the ballpark or a brewery most days. Read him here, writing about the A's or Giants at The Athletic, or about beer at October. Follow him on Twitter @enosarris if you can handle the sandwiches and inanity.
I am in a 10 team AL only with a $280 auction cap. I am keeping Will Myers $5, Glen Perkins $4, Papi $11 and Josh Donaldson $5. I need to keep 3 of the following Oswaldo Arcia $5, Rajai Davis $7, JJ Hardy $14, Avisail Garcia $10, Sal Perez $10 or Will Middlebrooks $5. I can really use advice who would you go with. Thank
