What do you think 2014 season has in store for Yan Gomes? The thought is that his ~.340 BABIP is due for some regression but some are quick to point out that he has always been a high BABIP guy in the minors and the adjustments he made after leaving the Jay had a positive impact on those, as well. With Santana’s inability to be a ‘catcher’ in almost any sense of the word the Indians are probably looking at Gomes to be the starter now, right?

Eno Sarris: If he can keep the K% where it was, then he’ll have a great year… he’s really looking like the starter, always had power. BABIPs in minors are usually high, unless you’re Manny Machado, so I dunno about those. I’d regress the K%, the BABIP, and therefore the BA, but I think he can be a top-12er.

I’m currently using Chad Young’s format to come up with auction values based off of Steamer’s projections in a Ottoneu points league. Based off my calculations, Steamer has Matt Holliday as a top 10 outfielder for that format. You buying?

Eno Sarris: No, well, mostly based on age. I think he’ll start to get hurt more, speed is gone… but if he’s a good points outfielder? sure.

Eno Sarris: Yeah we’ll do rankings. We also do ten bold predictions where we try to really push ourselves and think weird. I’ll do a post of my guys, I’ll add one about my guys to avoid. Next week, we start going through each team in INF/OUT/SP/RP posts, division by division. We’ll have auction values and the whole nine yards. Our league has a lot of sidebets on this one. Gattis or D’aunard for 2014 ?

Eno Sarris: I’ll take Gattis unless you’re in an OBP league. I think TDA will be an excellent real-life catcher — he’s a great framer, good defensively, will take some walks, have a bit of power — but I think he’s also probably in the scrum with the .260/15-20 guys with the bat. Gattis is old, has no projection, isn’t great at plate discipline, but he has a lot more power, and I think he can manage a .250 batting average.

Guererro, Kendrick, or Dozier to fill a 2B hole in a deep dynasty?

Eno Sarris: Down on Guerrero. Might be a .250/18/0 kinda guy. Rather have Dozier actually. If he irons out the IFFB problem, he’s great! If not, he’s okay. Kendrick costs more and is over-rated. He’s the safest if the costs are actually equal.

how many innings do you think Jose Fernandez throws this year? You were high on him last year, like a good wheat beer. Who do you think highly of this spring?

Eno Sarris: I think JF can throw 185-190, so might just get skipped a few times, or shut down at end of season. Almost no limit. Young arm that might have a role and run with it? There’s Paxton. I’ll be jumping into my rankings and players a bit more when I’m done editing FG+.

What might Junior Lake’s role be with the Cubs this year? any reason to think they are high on him?

Eno Sarris: I think he’s going to get a ton of playing time. I might be super inefficient in real life, but the Cubs don’t have a ton of options *right away.* Obviously, Soler, Almora on the way, but they’ll want to either pump up Lake value for trade for SP, or see if he can help at all. Bryant might end up in OF too because he was pretty bad at third when I saw him. So I’d give Lake at least the first half of the season, and he could hit .260 with double-digit homers and steals, and if he does that, I think he’ll hang on to a job somewhere for a bit.

How valuable is Harper at $13 in his final contract year? Would you deal him for Yelich $5 (two years more at $9, $14) and Abreu $11 (two more years at $15, $20)?

Eno Sarris: Yelich strikes out a bit much… Abreu could hit .270… if you’re going to win this year, or are in it, I’d keep him. Otherwise… Yelich at a smaller price is interesting.

How would you adjust keeper/dynasty rankings/strategies for contract leagues? I’m in a roto league with 12 teams, auction for contracts that go 1 to 5 years, and also milb farm with unlimited keepers and a 5 round draft.

Eno Sarris: Gotta do inflation, meaning the players remaining in your pool are worth a bit more because the players that are owned are likely owned under value and that means more money is on the table. Chad Young is doing ottoneu auction values for FG+ again, and he has a heck of a time with inflation values.

Yankees… I’m *pretty sure* they don’t care about $189m, but they are right there… under-reported aspect of Yankees and that number: rev sharing dies in 2016… they could just fight it in the CBA. I’ve missed several of your chats lately and you probably answered this before, What are your thoughts on Tanaka? I like the guy, but with the posting changes he’s slated to get alot more money per year than previous Japanese players. If he falls farther towards the Dice-K end of the spectrum than the Darvish end he could be a real albatross.

Eno Sarris: I like him, not as much as Yu, but more than Dice-K. I think he could be a younger Kuroda. Only problem is — how flat is the fastball. If it’s a fat one, he’ll need to be in the NL, and even then… Good news is, he’s no Tim Lincecum. Excellent fastball control, a devastating splitter… it works. I doubt he’ll be an albatross, even if he’s not an ace.

Does Appel debut this year? When do you think they call him up? How good can he be?

Eno Sarris: He’s really close. He spent the extra year getting that changeup ready and just tore up the lower minors like he should have. I think he’s in Double-A to start the year, and the only reason he doesn’t come up is to keep him cheap longer. He’s got great fastballs, great control, a strong slurve, and a decent changeup. That changeup matters a lot because he can’t get by on the slurve alone against lefties.

Abreu is crazy to try and project, and it looks like the DTs overestimate OBP, but his number basically blow everyone else out of the water. The SLG and OBP are massively better than anyone else….I so want him to come over and be an immediate superstar.

Eno Sarris: Yeah if you sort the table on my piece, Abreu comes in with the highest everything … BA, OBP, SLG… so yeah, the best hitter to every come out of Cuba.

Why do projections seem down on Nats across the board? Team projections have them far behind the Braves. Not even a close race this year?

Eno Sarris: No, I picked the Braves last year and I’ll take the Nats this year. I think Harper will surpass projections and that they improved their depth, which was a huge problem last year.

Eno Sarris: I tried to write a post about studying depth, and it’s impossible. But it does seem that the top part of your roster is slightly more important. Once you get to that part of the win curve where every win matters, then you need a bench. In other words, if the A’s didn’t have great pitching, their bench wouldn’t matter. And the Nationals…well they needed a better bench last year.

Are there any general rules you tend to follow when drafting in a roto league? ex. try to get 80 hrs/80 steals in your first 5 picks, no pitchers early, etc.

Eno Sarris: I generally try to get a bottom-tier top-12 SP and a top-tier #2, so that usually happens in rounds three through seven. I only do this because I want to get two chances at CY-type performance, and I think there are about 20ish pitchers that can do that any given year. Otherwise, mostly just value. I don’t even focus as heavily on the MI as I used to.

DBacks can either hold out for a steep price and wind up not making a deal and having a SS glut on their roster or take a deal that they can make. Towers does’t appear to be the type to hold out just on principal.

Eno Sarris: So, fine. I like it. It’s all about cost. And yes, Towers actually seems the opposite: ready to jettison players he’s soured on. So it’s a chance for arbitrage.

Eno Sarris: I wouldn’t take Perez because I just don’t see it yet. Not in the pitch peripherals. Peavy? Cheaper… way less upside IMO. It’s not crazy, but I bet the hype goes another level and you could get more.

Pirates fan here. Mercer will be in an offense/defense platoon with Clint Barmes, similar to end of last year. No one is pushing for time from him, though, as Hanson won’t be ready til 2015, so the only wrench could be if the Pirates make a very unexpected signing for Drew or Mercer flops and they make a deal into the season.

Eno Sarris: Only problem is Hanson is no good at D and might be a 2B. And Barmes a negative with bat. So I think there’s daylight in there for Mercer.
