Question: What if the Astros (plenty of money to spend, absolutely no payroll, plenty of pighly touted prospects looking ahead to the future, and no albatross commitments)sign a player like Cano to a very large contract and front load the ever living hell out of it. I know these are millions of dollars here, but what if they paid something insane like 100 million in the first year and 50 in the second since their payroll is hovering around 20 million and they have the money to spend. Moving forward they would be paying a superstar a very low annual salary while being able to spend elsewhere… stupid idea or unrealistic?

Eno Sarris: Not terrible, I guess, but for lux tax purposes, it’s one AAV, and teams that aren’t winning aren’t making money to spend right now. Look at Houston specifically and the problems with their TV station. They aren’t making all the money that Forbes article claimed they were making. So they probably couldn’t do that. But front-load to some extent? Sign Choo? Temple made a good argument for that.

Eno Sarris: Yeah you gotta take a chance on him. .250/25 seems like a safe way to project him. I think the risk is that his glove takes him out of the job though.

Eno Sarris: As Cab needs to be traded, Urrutia is an empty batting average (which could still win an award).. but Eaton… well I like Eaton, but I talked to baseball people last week that really didn’t. Cited age, lack of power, didn’t think BBs would translate.

I understand that voting a guy that we’re sure did steroids into the hall is problematic with regards to giving young people a model, but I also don’t think it’s hard to say, hey, kid, Barry was awesome, so was Ty Cobb, but don’t be like those guys in every way. read something recently (might have been a comment on beergraphs) that defined “craft beer” as being the big breweries attempts at creating microbrew. Then labeled it too cheap to be as tasty as micro, too expensive to be consumed in place of cheap big brews. you agree? or do you define craft beer differently?

Eno Sarris: Craft brewers are defined by the Brewer’s Association as anything that produces less than Sam Adams basically. So none of the big beers count. I forget the number for micro brewers, but that’s on their website too. How far can you actually get with platooning? If there are a bunch of high split guys available, could you get above average production from like an entire outfield? At what point do you run out of space?

Eno Sarris: The value of the roster spot does start to take a toll on the situation. I thought about this last year for the Mets. Could you platoon each outfield spot? That means six outfielders. You could have six infielders, then, but two are catchers. Means that either one of your outfielders can play the infield, or your super utility guy can play everywhere and is awesome.

Eno Sarris: Everyone poo-poos this, but there is a cultural dance going on here. Once the player is public in his stance about wanting to go, it gets more difficult for his team in Japan. They have to do things like publicly offer him the highest salary every offered to a player in the NPB, have pressers about how they are trying their hardest to change his mind. The players are watching, and they want to think they can ask to go when they are a superstar. And conflict is a bit more of a problem in Japan, in my experience. I’m not saying this as a blanket thing about all Japanese players, it’s just my experience with the culture. Worked at a japanese company for five years, went to Japan three times a year.
