Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 2/20/14
| 11:47 |
 : 13 minutes until weird.

 |
| 11:49 |
 :

 |
| 11:50 |
: clip of the day brought to you by my wife, who gave her consent for me to go to Jamaica for a long weekend coming up.

 |
| 12:00 |
 LETSSSSSSSSSSSSSS GETTTTTTTTTT WEIRD! |
| 12:00 |
Tell me what to think about the Simmons deal! |
| 12:00 |
: Not as awesome as Rizzo or Goldschmidt deals, but pretty good. Just saw Collette tweet that Reyes got 54 mill over the same time period, and players are more expensive now.

 |
| 12:01 |
Is the Franklin/Miller battle at ss just a smokescreen to pump up Franklin’s value or just coach speak to keep Miller on his toes or both? |
| 12:01 |
: From the guys that I know that watch the Mariners more than I do, it doesn’t sound like Franklin can be a shortstop.

 |
| 12:01 |
I don’t know what to think about Ryan Zimmerman this year. Can he bounce back? |
| 12:02 |
: Past health issues predict future ones, so I think he’ll be good again, and probably miss some time. Not surprising at all that he brought a first baseman’s mitt to camp this year.

 |
| 12:02 |
How do you see the logjam in the Rockies OF and 1B working out? Does Dickerson get the 444 PA steamer projects? |
| 12:04 |
: The plate appearance totals come from our depth charts, mostly. I think it’s a battle for CF honestly, doubt the team *really* wants to run CarGo out there. So it’s Dickerson, Blackmon and Stubbs fighting for CF and backup. Blackmon has the best skill set for being a fourth OF I’d say, and Stubbs is a righty. So yeah, I think Dickerson can get just less than a 2/3 share of one starting spot.

 |
| 12:04 |
Eno, I am in an AL only 10 team league with a $280 auction cap. I could trade a $5 Oswaldo Arcia for a $10 Danny Salazar. Should I do it? Thanks for your input |
| 12:04 |
: I would. Arcia is a power-only guy in a park that suppresses power and Salazar is about to be one of the best pitchers in the league.

 |
| 12:04 |
Eno, tried hitting up Dave and Jeff with this one to no avail. Are there any studies to bunting against the shift? I know its hard to bunt against MLB pitching but there have to be some times where it just makes sense to get a runner on. |
| 12:05 |
: There have been pieces, particularly about Teix and Howard, but I can’t find them easily right now in a chat. I think the problem is that the sluggers don’t bunt often, so their chance of being successful is lower than guys with more practice.

 |
| 12:05 |
So this phillies thing…giving more ammunition for the Northwestern players call for a union. |
| 12:06 |
: So terrible. Baseball players all have ‘advisors’ that are agents, it’s not like basketball. The Phillies couldn’t come to an agreement with a fifth-rounder and ratted on him for having an agent. Dirty.

 |
| 12:06 |
when youre talking about Whiff rates on the ‘sleeper+bust podcast’, for example Hamels’ changeup gets ~22% whiffs, is that the SwStrk% for that pitch? |
| 12:07 |
: Yes I pretty much only use swinging strike rate unless I mention otherwise. I wrote a piece with the benchmarks this week.

 |
| 12:07 |
Who do you think will have a better year, Puig or Kemp? |
| 12:07 |
: Puig younger and has no health issues to start the season, I’d bet on him.

 |
| 12:07 |
Alex Gordon and Moose for David Wright in a dynasty league? |
| 12:07 |
 : Giddyap.

 |
| 12:07 |
Is Big Papi a little underrated? Behind Rizzo? |
| 12:08 |
: At his age, the injury factor is fairly large, despite his okay health.

 |
| 12:08 |
Eno, in Detroit it is currently thunderstorming during a blizzard, is the apocalypse upon us? |
| 12:08 |
: I would love to see that.

 |
| 12:08 |
: Not the apocalypse, the thunderstorming during a blizzard.

 |
| 12:09 |
How would you value Jose Aberu in a dynasty with linear weights? Top 10 1B? |
| 12:09 |
: Slightly higher than regular because the biggest risk with him I think is contact rate.

 |
| 12:10 |
Choose 2, please Eno! 2nd round Pedroia, 6th round Mauer, 24th round Xander |
| 12:10 |
: Go for value and take the 24th rounder.

 |
| 12:10 |
Foothills Jade is amazing. And Lagunitas Sucks>>>Hopslam this year. This year’s release of Sucks might be my favorite beer ever |
| 12:11 |
What would you have done with Kimbrel? Go year to year with arb? There’s not much room for excess value with the deal they gave him, is there? |
| 12:11 |
: Yeah I dunno if they really want a $14 million closer in his free agent years, and arb overvalues saves. That was the one I didn’t love.

 |
| 12:12 |
Which side wins: Longo/Kipnis for Harper? 4 man keeper league. |
| 12:12 |
: I value Kipnis higher then the rest.

 |
| 12:12 |
Notes on Jamaica: Driving there is terrifying – “cab” drivers are crazy, no guardrail, and they fill potholes with chalk (doesn’t work). Jerk chicken on any roadside is the most delicious chicken you’ll ever eat. |
| 12:12 |
: Was born there and yes you are right.

 |
| 12:12 |
What are you gonna do in Jamaica? |
| 12:12 |
 : Jump off a cliff.

 |
| 12:12 |
 Who baseballs best? |
| 12:12 |
 : Trout.

 |
| 12:13 |
12 team league 6×6 3 keepers between Votto, Puig, Reyes, MCarpenter, Choo? I choose to redraft pitchers because of injury volatility. So I am leaving Bumgardner, Gray, YVentura, and Lester off. |
| 12:13 |
: Votto Puig… huh. my values say matt carp even with regression.

 |
| 12:13 |
What percentage of the queue has the word Andrelton in it? |
| 12:14 |
 : 25%?

 |
| 12:14 |
 Andrelton! |
| 12:14 |
 : Maybe more.

 |
| 12:14 |
Why do you think Everth’s 2013 breakout was PED-fueled? Biognesis was already closed and he knew he was already under investigation by MLB. He was killing it right up until his suspension. Seems more likely he was using in 2010, 2011, 2012, when he wasn’t as effective. |
| 12:14 |
: You know I actually don’t care what happened. I know this: his contact rate in 2013 is the outlier.

 |
| 12:15 |
Eno, in a vacuum would you take Matt Cain or J Hamilton? Now what if half of that vacuum needed OF? better off looking for upside at better value? |
| 12:15 |
: Don’t put players in a vacuum they might die. (I have them valued similarly, so it’s not terrible to take Hamilton despite his flaws.)

 |
| 12:16 |
so eno im in a 10 team mixed single year snake draft, in which i got the 2nd pick! yay, figuring i get either trout or cabby, who should i target at the end of round 2 and beggining of round 3 |
| 12:16 |
 : Trout/Kipnis/Edwin

 |
| 12:16 |
In an auction at what point does chasing SV get silly? Axford, Feliz, Street all top $12 as the last name guys available. Do you just move on and go for better talent like Allen? |
| 12:17 |
: Hate that. I’m always looking for a $10 closer. I’ll buy one that’s $12-14 to make sure I get one guy, then buy a bunch of maybes. In Only leagues.

 |
| 12:17 |
Odds that Pujols can reproduce his 2012 numbers? (85/30/105/.285/.859? |
| 12:17 |
: Not great. It doesn’t have to be the plantar that goes this time.

 |
| 12:17 |
As a Phils fan, this Wetzler/Monda deal makes no sense. Nothing to gain from it going forward. Has to be more to the story, right? |
| 12:17 |
 : Emotions?

 |
| 12:17 |
When does Matt Holliday start to break down? |
| 12:17 |
: Every year I ask this.

 |
| 12:17 |
Lets say Soriano goes down…First chair for the nats: I say Storen and not Clippard..agree or disagree..anyway I say a Soriano gets hurt this year. |
| 12:18 |
: I agree that Soriano gets hurt. I like Storen. But they’ve been shopping him and in the past it was Clipp…

 |
| 12:18 |
I’m old, have an injury history, but have been productive in the past…Aren’t I just too perfect for Brian Cashman to pass up? |
| 12:18 |
I DID IT ALL FOR THE MOOKIE (BETTS)! THE MOOKIE! |
| 12:18 |
Am I done yet? We’re going broke. |
| 12:18 |
Currently in worse shape: Chris Christie or the Rangers rotation? |
| 12:18 |
Jamaica Mon… enjoy.. going to a Sandals/all inclusive or to the real Jamaica.. Ochos Rios? Drink a Red Stripe? |
| 12:18 |
: Negril. That’s my hometown. Even realer than Ocho.

 |
| 12:18 |
 Is Salazar’s workload a concern? 87 innings in 2012, 145 last year. |
| 12:19 |
: yes, but he can add 20% and be great in everything but h2h. even there, bank it.

 |
| 12:19 |
Are the consensus rankings the worst part of your job? Seems like it’s a lot of work just to get incredulous rebuttals in the comments. |
| 12:19 |
 : Yes.

 |
| 12:19 |
Belt or Butler for 2014? |
| 12:20 |
: I have fairly nice projections for Belt and fairly mean ones for Butler and still Butler’s ahead.

 |
| 12:20 |
do you think there’s any chance the Nats do a platoon of Espi at 2nd, Rendon at 3rd, and Zimmerman at 1st against lefties? |
| 12:20 |
: they said he’d get time at first this year….

 |
| 12:20 |
first ever fantasy draft this year, should i be targeting more position players or pitchers? also what round should i draft a pitcher, standard espn h2h with 1 of each position and 3 utility as well as 5 starters and 2 rp |
| 12:21 |
: Welcome! Pitchers get hurt more often, stay hurt longer, and are more difficult to project. Also, you only need “SP” and “RP” while you need tons of different positions. I wouldn’t get a starting pitcher until round four, and plenty here wait even longer.

 |
| 12:21 |
In a keep 5 players league should I trade Verlander for Chris Davis? I have Bumgarner, Cain & Bailey to choose from, and Stanton is my only other power threat |
| 12:21 |
 : Yes.

 |
| 12:21 |
I once saw David Ortiz bunt against the shift for a single. It made my day, you could see everyone laughing after he reached first |
| 12:21 |
Eno, I need your guidance!!! I’m in an AL-only keeper league and have Gausman and Paxton on my farm. Not so long ago, I planned on going into the auction having both on my 2014 roster. Now I wonder if I should leave them both on the farm…What do I do?!?!? |
| 12:21 |
: Gausman is ready to go, IMO.

 |
| 12:22 |
Cruz ever finds a team? |
| 12:22 |
: Baltimore is the newest rumor… but yes. He will play this year.

 |
| 12:22 |
How do you see Oregon State responding? Do you think they’ll shut out Phillies scouts from games this season or is there still too much to be gained? |
| 12:22 |
: I doubt this happens. They want their guys to feel like they can come to their school and be drafted.

 |
| 12:22 |
Who do you see having the best season: Liriano, Cingrani, or Cashner? Cashner finished strong! |
| 12:23 |
: Cingrani is what I should say. He doesn’t have the injury history of Cashner. But I just want to say Cashner so that’s that.

 |
| 12:23 |
The blizzard in Detroit improves the view.. |
| 12:23 |
ENOOOOOO! Sonny Gray, Mat Latos or Homer Bailey this season? I think Gray could be better than both, that curveball is unreal. |
| 12:24 |
: Def not Bailey. I’m a little worried about Gray v LHP just because he was tentative and his change is bad, but his home park will help him out. If Latos hadnt hurt his knee, I would have taken him.

 |
| 12:24 |
Desmond or JUpton in an OBP league? |
| 12:24 |
 : Upton…

 |
| 12:24 |
Where can I find these 40 HR pants that you are always talking about on sleeper and the bust? |
| 12:24 |
: Dude if I could find them my wife wold be a lot happier about my salary.

 |
| 12:24 |
Sorry I’m late. My stupid company had Fangraphs blocked for some reason. |
| 12:25 |
: There was some stupid thing that popped up on FG that we fixed this week. If you’re having this problem, we’ve fixed it, and depending on how nice you are to the tech guys (I always made good friends with them when I was in an office) you can ask them to look at it again.

 |
| 12:25 |
Thundersnow. Good stuff, it’s the only weather condition that makes for a good name of a metal band. |
| 12:25 |
You’re that high on Salazar? Do you think by the end of the season he will be top 25? |
| 12:26 |
: Every one of his pitches grades out as plus or better by pitch peripherals.

 |
| 12:26 |
Jake Peavy, any mixed league value or is his declining K’s mean its the end? |
| 12:26 |
: Final pitcher still for sure.

 |
| 12:26 |
I listen regularly to sleeper/bust and I am trying to balance what you say about yan gomes, ramos and Trumbo and where you list them in your rankings. also, when you do your projections, do u reduce/increase figures when they are significantly different than “consensus”? thanks |
| 12:27 |
: I basically use Steamer and the Fans as two poles, and move the projection towards one or the other when I like/don’t like a player. Sometimes I’ll go beyond one of the poles by the tiniest of bits.

 |
| 12:27 |
Whas your review of Sierra Nevada’s Bigfoot? |
| 12:27 |
 : Don’t like barleywines.

 |
| 12:27 |
what round should i be targeting jose abreu single season 10 team mixed 1 first baseman |
| 12:27 |
: no earlier than eighth IMO. I’ve seen him going in the tenth in deeper leagues than that. First base has a lot of great talents, great numbers. I have him ranked between David Ortiz and Brandon Belt.

 |
| 12:28 |
Has the Pendulum swung too far RE: Jose Fernandez? He’s off the board 45 overall in certain cases |
| 12:28 |
: It’s a little rich for my blood.

 |
| 12:28 |
Sam Adams just released a West Coast style IPA and… it’s actually pretty good. (keep the pitchforks put away, I’m an east coaster so a $13 12-pack of halfway decent WC IPA is exciting) |
| 12:28 |
Hiroki Kuroda – I know he’s old, but any reason why he can’t produce similar numbers (3.30 ERA / 1.16 WHIP) again? Projections seem to be down on him. |
| 12:28 |
: You start shaving off IP at his age, mostly.

 |
| 12:28 |
 Who wins a $21 Posey for $12 Encarnacion swap? $265 cap |
| 12:28 |
 : Edwin side more value.

 |
| 12:29 |
 A trout can’t baseball, Eno. |
| 12:29 |
 that’s dark, eno. |
| 12:29 |
Jamaica has a bobsled team |
| 12:29 |
: you guys are getting weirder

 |
| 12:29 |
Still believe in Cashner? Think he’ll break out in a big way this year? |
| 12:29 |
: went back to knuckle slider in the second half can’t wait to interview him about it

 |
| 12:30 |
Referencing a beergraphs article, why does anyone care that Blue Point got bought out? It is a brewery with mostly negative BAR beers and nothing above 3 BAR. Its basically like if the russians bought the Astros, they suck, nobody should care. |
| 12:30 |
: Some people in NY like them, and also, it’s a trend and it might be a bad one…

 |
| 12:30 |
who is this year’s Iwakuma or Cobb, those late round guys that will be top 30 in 2015? |
| 12:31 |
: Kluber, Gausman, Smyly, Alex Wood, deeeeeep Danny Duffy.

 |
| 12:31 |
C’mon Eno, Bud Selig has to baseball best. They named an award after him, and he won the inaugural award!!! Name one other baseball award that was won by the person they named it after. |
| 12:32 |
 : boo

 |
| 12:32 |
Long Jamaica weekend consent? I just got consent to go to Denver for spring break from my parents!!! |
| 12:32 |
 : we both happy

 |
| 12:32 |
Alderson passed on a Joyce for Ike Davis swap (per NYPost). Smart or misread the market? |
| 12:32 |
: He wants longer-term assets, don’t blame him.

 |
| 12:32 |
Is Stephen Strasburg underrated this year? |
| 12:32 |
 : I love him.

 |
| 12:32 |
I got to try ZD and Younger on the same day earlier this week. Seems like everything is coming up Milhouse. |
| 12:33 |
: that’s quite the combo. both top 7 DIPAs for me.

 |
| 12:33 |
Andre Ethier had a higher WAR last year than Stanton, Beltran, Cespedes and many other OFs. Why is he forever ridiculed on this site? |
| 12:33 |
 : He is?

 |
| 12:33 |
I know you are high on Kipnis but does his 2nd half splits scare you away in a H2H points league since it isn’t truly just about final counting stats? Should there even be concern about his 2nd half splits? |
| 12:34 |
: 2nd half splits are not predictive. Even if there was a reason (he’s young, got tired, whatever), it’s a new year. I think we’re looking at a power peak one of these years. 2B ranks come out today and I have Kipnis first.

 |
| 12:34 |
Shallow keep 5, only really concerned about next year, $3 Joe Nathan, $11 Jordan Zimmermann, $4 Headley, or $11 Matt Moore? I know keeping a closer is silly but Nathan is so cheap and should have one more good year in him. |
| 12:34 |
: Definitely not a closer. I think it’s Zimm. Better health chance than Moore.

 |
| 12:34 |
Is Guerrero going to end up starting/spending the season in the minors for the Dodgers? |
| 12:34 |
: Gonna write about this today sometime. I think he could, and it’s bad news for a 26 year old.

 |
| 12:35 |
So far in mocks you’ve enjoyed your team outcome when drafting in ____. You have kinda hated your teams drafting from____. |
| 12:35 |
: the early first round / late first round

 |
| 12:35 |
the apocalypse has been on Detroit for years |
| 12:35 |
Who is the lowest 3B you would be comfortable with in a 15-team league? |
| 12:36 |
: Kyle Seager? Chris Johnson? Matt Dominguez? I’d take two of them for sure.

 |
| 12:36 |
They’re saying 10-15 games at 1B for Zimmerman this year. Not exactly enough to call it a platoon for LaRoche |
| 12:36 |
Think pitching is exceptionally deep this year. What’s the latest round you draft your first one H2H? |
| 12:37 |
: H2H there’s a chance for streaming and quantity over quality, I could wait until seventh-tenth.

 |
| 12:37 |
I feel like it’d make sense for the Nats to try to move some of their SP depth to TX for Odor. Move Zim off 3rd next year, Rendon to 3rd, Espi can platoon or sit. Thoughts? |
| 12:37 |
: Not terrible. Odor seems blocked.

 |
| 12:37 |
Lawrie or Prado at 3B? |
| 12:38 |
 : Lawrie.

 |
| 12:38 |
A thunderstorm/blizzard isn’t even in the top-10 most apocalyptic things to happen to Detroit. Them’s peoples living in Mad Max times. |
| 12:38 |
Hailstorm could be the name of a metal band… |
| 12:38 |
That awkward moment when your password is fartfartfart and your IT guy needs your password. |
| 12:38 |
Vindication – The cardinals want aldemys diaz. The cardinals never are wrong! This is exactly why the Mets should be interested in him! |
| 12:39 |
: His offensive numbers in Cuba are no good, so his D better be great.

 |
| 12:39 |
Might have asked this weeks ago but, will Milone really not open season in the rotation?? |
| 12:39 |
: Really doesn’t look like it.

 |
| 12:39 |
Where are you taking your catcher? I’m thinking real late? |
| 12:39 |
: In a 12-team mixer with one catcher, yes really late. Ramos, Montero, Gomes… love em.

 |
| 12:39 |
Have you ever seen an Otto strategy where you would use uo your 162 Catcher games as quick as possible then cut your catchers so you can have more matchups/platoon option? |
| 12:40 |
: Instead of ‘cut’ say ‘trade’ and I might be doing that. Have Ramos and McCann on my team because the best I could get was Kendrick for Ramos and nah.

 |
| 12:40 |
Did Bailey change anything mechanically for the extra velo? Could ST tell us anything about his velo? If the gun reads 94 in March, would you buy back in? |
| 12:40 |
: Yeah I’d be interested in gun readings. I don’t know enough about Bailey to say that he did something to earn it, just that it’s weird for a man his age.

 |
| 12:40 |
Over / Under : Lucas Duda hits 74 HRs |
| 12:41 |
: ITS THE RETURN OF THE MAXAMUZ

 |
| 12:41 |
do you use a beer belly to sneak your preferred beer into baseball stadiums? |
| 12:41 |
: That’d be tough since most of the time I’m working…

 |
| 12:41 |
Are people getting a little too excited about Goldschmidt? Seems a decent regression candidate and at some point those steals can not be banked on; if you can’t count on those, then is he really any better than Davis? |
| 12:41 |
 : Batting average tho.

 |
| 12:41 |

Why hello there…It's been a while. |
| 12:41 |
Taking a friend out for beers for his birthday tonight. He only drinks Stella. What should I strongly advise him to try? |
| 12:42 |
: A dirty pilsner at the very least. Maybe a session pale. A saison?

 |
| 12:42 |
ENO! Gregory Polanco better future than Marte? |
| 12:42 |
: In real life, maybe his plate discipline will do it. But Marte stealing that many bases… Polanco probably won’t. Polanco might have more power, but I bet he’s also a 20 HR guy, and Marte might a 15 HR guy…

 |
| 12:43 |

 |
| 12:43 |
I’ve spent the last two months a stones throw from Three Floyds, but am moving to Houston at the end of the month. You or the chatters know any great Texas or Houston beers to help me through my separation anxiety? |
| 12:43 |
: Karbach scored really well on one of our brewery metrics today.

 |
| 12:43 |
it’s more like if the russians bought the astros and also the angels and it seemed like china might be edging in on the rangers, leaving other major league teams to A) sell out themselves or B) compete with teams that suddenly had massive financial resources at their disposal. |
| 12:43 |
: the Blue Point buy out

 |
| 12:43 |
 It’s Klubering time! |
| 12:43 |
Strasburg sprinkling in a slider. he asking for his arm to fall off by 2015? |
| 12:44 |
: I admit to this thought.

 |
| 12:44 |
What’s your opinion on Southern Tier? I’ve had a few of their selections, and am not overly impressed. Am I missing something or is the beer? |
| 12:44 |
: Their top beers are great IMO.

 |
| 12:44 |
 I hate Millhouse VanHoouten. |
| 12:44 |
: Here five seconds and ready to start crap again.

 |
| 12:44 |
In your ideal draft, how many pitchers do you have by the end of round ten. I usually have three, but may go two with this year’s freakish depth. |
| 12:44 |
 : Two or three yes.

 |
| 12:44 |
Ethier is ridiculed for his contract. Plus Stanton was hurt last season, thats and unfair comp. |
| 12:44 |
i go to discovery bay every january… we go to the ultimate jerk! |
| 12:45 |
 : He’s talking about chicken.

 |
| 12:46 |
Got into a bit of a debate on this? What happened to the pitch value on Homer Bailey’s slider? During his best year, he really only had two very good pitches. The fastball and two-seamer. |
| 12:47 |
: Had to check the pitch peripherals. Must be a sequencing thing. Slider got 16% whiffs, that’s above-average, curve got 12%, above-average, Split got 21% whiffs, that’s above-average. Everything was above-average by whiffs.

 |
| 12:48 |
: Thinking about trading Matt Carpenter for Gerrit Cole straight up, round 15 for round 20. Maybe I can ask for Leonys Martin round 20 too. You like?

 |
| 12:48 |
I’m in a 6×6 with veteran presence being the extra category. Is it possible to draft too many Phillies? |
| 12:48 |
 : ALL OF THEM

 |
| 12:48 |
where do the Braves rank now in money committed to 2017-2020 range? |
| 12:48 |
: Dunno, but this year they still mid-tier.

 |
| 12:48 |
Admit it- Theres no such things as “Tiers” The cut-offs between the groupings are completely arbitrary. ADMIT IT ENOOOO! |
| 12:48 |
 : you didn’t get FG+ I guess

 |
| 12:49 |
Once saw Yellowman in Negril! great open air club overlooking water, Kaiser’s iirc. |
| 12:49 |
: I’ve seen Yellowman many times, almost used him for the clip of the dya.

 |
| 12:49 |
Will MB or Drew Smyly as my last keeper? I already have Arenado and Castellanos. And I am rebuilding. |
| 12:49 |
: With those two on board I’d take the pitcher.

 |
| 12:49 |

Lucas Duda is coming for the souls of his detractors. He will win the 1B gig and soar into the sunset on the wings of a North Koreas hidden Unicorn after he saves the country for the tyranical reign. |
| 12:49 |
IS bonifacio more or less draftable than when he was in KC? |
| 12:50 |
: Just as? I mean, I don’t think Barney will really stand in his way much if he plays well in spring.

 |
| 12:50 |
Should I not keep Semien or is there hope for him moving to 2B/SS? seems like 3B pretty well covered now. |
| 12:50 |
: He played short in AFL, but that could be random. I think he could definitely be the 2B after Beckham, with GB traded this year.

 |
| 12:50 |
Will David Lough play regularly? Eventually? Great bat. |
| 12:51 |
: Right now, probably at least a platoon starter in LF, against RHP.

 |
| 12:51 |
Would you look to deal Giancarlo in a keeper league if he starts hot? His knees make me nervous. |
| 12:51 |
 : I’ve got him and I might.

 |
| 12:51 |
First thought on Simmons was that it would have made sense for Braves to go through Arb system with him, since so much value comes from defense which isn’t valued as highly. However, 17 homers compares favorably at SS, and could see BA bounce back. Smart moves by Braves? |
| 12:51 |
: Defense also has a way of coming back in to play — he started every day at short, so he gets lumped in with all shortstops that started every day at short and had same service time.

 |
| 12:52 |
there is a band called halestorm |
| 12:52 |
Who would you rather have in a H2H keeper league, Votto or Fielder? The league counts OBP and SLG on top of the normal 5 offensive categores. |
| 12:53 |
: With OBP in there, it’s closer. I guess I’d say Votto. He’s an OBP monster. They only a buck apart in my 5×5 rankings.

 |
| 12:53 |
 Sooth. |
| 12:53 |
how do you change your strategy when there are autodrafters/autobidders in the draft? |
| 12:54 |
: nominate chumps that nobody wants to get their money down and do it early or they’ll bid up everyone in the end game.

 |
| 12:54 |
Overall in 2013 did you win or lose money across your 13 fantasy leagues? |
| 12:55 |
: Won, of course. But there are some leagues that ask for money with no prize, cough TOUT cough.

 |
| 12:55 |
I’m always super-impressed when people ask last-name-only questions with no other identifying information and you immediately recognize the player. Which round are you drafting Ramirez, Johnson, Davis, and Rodriguez in? |
| 12:55 |
 : All of them?

 |
| 12:55 |
“working” watching a ball game, tough life |
| 12:55 |
: It’s pretty awesome, never complained about anything except payday.

 |
| 12:56 |
What spring training velocities do RA Dickey and Erasmo Ramirez have to hit for me to feel confident taking them a little early? |
| 12:56 |
: 92 regularly in spring for Erasmo would make me feel good. Dickey needs to hit 79/80 on the knuckler to be more ace-like.

 |
| 12:56 |
A lot of question marks in the Yankee rotation given CC’s 2013, Kuroda’s age, Nova’s general volatility, Tanaka not having thrown an MLB pitch and Pineda is just a complete wildcard. But at the same time it would be pretty easy to see them being one of the top rotations in baseball. Thoughts? |
| 12:57 |
: Too many things have to go right for it to be top. But I bet enough go right that they are in the mix at the end of the year. I think Nova settles in as a mid-rotation guy, Kuroda is fine, CC has a bit of a bounce-back. Pineda? Dunno, even if he gets his velocity back, haven’t seen a change I like from him.

 |
| 12:57 |
Justin is taking his friend out for a beer and you want rec’s?.. on the kind of beer?.. How about finding a new friend that will buy 24 different kinds of beers.. have a tasting set up in his house and then enjoy that? |
| 12:58 |
: Listen we can’t all have me.

 |
| 12:58 |
Oh god…hes here still? Juan…Pierre…so we meet again my old enemy.. |
| 12:58 |
“Thudersnow” — Chet Romaine (Luke Perry) is confronted with a nightmarish weather phenomenon in his attempts to reconcile with his estranged, pregnant fiancee, Felicity Fells (Melissa Joan Hart). Also starring Donnie Wahlberg, Jenny McCarthy and Heather Locklear. 64 minutes. Lifetime Network. |
| 12:58 |
Better song: Who let the dogs out or Mambo #5 |
| 12:58 |
Whats up with this talk of SP depth? Isn’t it the same as last year? Or are homers dropping off so young pitchers are more serviceable? |
| 12:59 |
: Offense as a whole is down to a nadir in this century.

 |
| 12:59 |
Is Strasburg this year’s Darvish? The top ten guy with freakish talent who vaults to the top 3. |
| 12:59 |
I just realized I haven’t been in an Eno chat in like five months. |
| 12:59 |
 I miss having a desk job. |
| 12:59 |
 No I don’t, actually… |
| 12:59 |
: Well you can miss me still.

 |
| 12:59 |
If Profar is blocking Odor, maybe his new nickname should be “antiperspirant” |
| 12:59 |
Is Jim Johnson a good bet to be the A’s closer? |
| 12:59 |
 : Yes.

 |
| 1:00 |
How does one properly pronounce Odor’s first name? |
| 1:00 |
: I think it’s more ruff than rouge, but definitely not the man to ask.

 |
| 1:00 |
Spotify is fired up, need new album to listen to. It can be anything, can I get some help from everyone please?! |
| 1:00 |
Baez or Russell for the next 4 years at SS? |
| 1:00 |
 : Give me Russell

 |
| 1:00 |
Robbie Grossman as an under-the-radar AL-only OF? |
| 1:00 |
: Yes. I like the changes he made. Think he can .270/10/20 sort of thing.

 |
| 1:00 |
You think the Mets would really listen on Dan Murphy this Spring? Mike Petriello has Murph as one of the Jays few real options for 2B. Norris or Nolin realistic returns? That opens up 2B for to carry on the EY2 infatuation in Queens |
| 1:01 |
: As much as I think the Rox showed us that EYJR is not a second baseman, I’d love to get more of the Jays’ pitching depth, as long as it eventually turns into a hitter.

 |
| 1:01 |
So then Smyly or Chris Archer? I’m leaning Smyly. |
| 1:02 |
: Smyly’s change is better than Archer’s, but he’ll have more of an IP limit.

 |
| 1:02 |
lots of talk about lack of power these days. is this just anecdotal, or has anyone actually looked at the numbers? Also, couldn’t it just be luck or statistical anomaly, which means we are all overvaluing power? |
| 1:03 |
: Power is down. Fairly easy to see: http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2013&month=0&season1=2000&ind=0&team=0,ss&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0 look at ISO, SLG, HRs…

 |
| 1:03 |

Me and Juan Pierre are on the same page. Perhaps after our lengthy blood feud we can grow to become long pals. |
| 1:03 |
Cole is round 15 or 20?…if 20. Hell yeah…I’ll take Daniel Murphy a gagillian rounds later in BA leagues. |
| 1:03 |
 : Round 18 I think. Weird rules.

 |
| 1:03 |
Bonifacio signing hurts Alcantara’s chances or playing this year though right? |
| 1:03 |
 : yes.

 |
| 1:04 |
What should my draft beer be? In western NC if that helps, set me up for greatness! |
| 1:05 |
: You should probably look for a Wicked Weed. http://beergraphs.com/leaderboards/?sp=&sbar=&q=®ion=us_us&abv_min=0.0&abv_max=25.0&bar_min=-15.0&bar_max=19.0&popularity=all

 |
| 1:05 |
What does Diaz signing mean for Kolten Wong? Anything? |
| 1:05 |
: Nah. Bat’ll only play at short, IMO.

 |
| 1:05 |
Could you see Gausman ending up as the Orioles’ closer this year, assuming the rotation is okay but the bullpen has holes |
| 1:05 |
: Replace Gausman with Norris and maybe. Gausman is the only pitcher on that staff that could be an ace.

 |
| 1:06 |
King, Iwakuma, Walker, Capuano, Paxson good enough for Ms to sneak above .500? (and still finish 4th) |
| 1:06 |
: There’s some upside there, and it’s fairly strong. With Erasmo, Baker, Maurer, there’s depth too.

 |
| 1:06 |
Are you sure about putting Kipnis ahead of Cano is your 2B rankings? Are you not affraid of the backlash? You are a brave man. |
| 1:07 |
: I said Kipnis would be the best second baseman in fantasy baseball in the AFL first pitch in Arizona last October, haven’t changed my story.

 |
| 1:07 |
The Mets next the playoffs in the year…? |
| 1:07 |
 : 2015

 |
| 1:07 |
Maxamuz/everyone listen to White Denim |
| 1:07 |
 It’s ROOG-ned, by the way |
| 1:07 |
The feud will continue I suppose, or at least it will continue until Maxamuz discovers electric razor technology, on that day juan pierres mustache will be no more. |
| 1:07 |
Sweep! Sweeeeeeeeeep! HARD HARD HARD!! HAAAAARD! |
| 1:07 |
Is Marky Mark Teixiera any good this year? |
| 1:08 |
: Don’t like that the wrist is sore again.

 |
| 1:08 |
Adrian Beltre have one more year in him? or is this the year he goes off the cliff? |
| 1:08 |
: Gonna happen some year. Actually, I bet he’s good but injuries start to come, which is preferable.

 |
| 1:08 |
How do you use BAR? If a beer has a negative BAR should I stay away? How come some beers have a negative BAR but a 100+ Style+? Just trying to understand how to use these tools when picking beers at a store. |
| 1:09 |
: A beer shouldn’t have a negative BAR and a positive Style+, I’ll look into that. BAR has popularity in it. If you not concerned with that, Style+ is good way to know it’s above average in its style.

 |
| 1:09 |
Can you give reasoning behind Russell over Baez? |
| 1:09 |
: Russell doesn’t have the same K% risk, better plate discipline, more well-rounded game, higher floor if perhaps lower ceiling.

 |
| 1:10 |
Do you think Chris Tillman could break out in 2013? He is still fairly young, saw the Ks go up and walks go down in the second half, and his velocity is back up. He seemingly has very good stuff, but just needs to put it together. |
| 1:12 |
: Problem with him is that none of his pitches is above-average by whiff rate other than his cutter, and only his curve gets above-average grounders. I think his stuff looks better to us than to hitters.

 |
| 1:12 |
@Maxamuz — check out Silence Yourself by the Savages. |
| 1:12 |
My draft is going to be split into 2 11 week seasons. Is there any player that you target more in the first than the second? Vice versa? |
| 1:13 |
: Seasonal splits aren’t predictive. But you could try to take more pitchers in the first half (cold air keeps homers down) and more hitters in the second half.

 |
| 1:13 |
has eno ever fed beef-a-reeno to a horse named rusty? what a delicious cuisine-o! |
| 1:13 |
If one wants to go beyond “my favorite fantasy writer likes this sleeper” or “his steamer projection is nice” to identifying guys on my own, where to start? |
| 1:14 |
: Listen to the ways people describe their breakouts. For me, I’m looking for superlative pitches in a good pitch mix, using pitch peripherals. Also, good park situations. For hitters, I often look for guys with pedigree that had good peripherals and bad results (rizzo).

 |
| 1:14 |
Tried some Hi-Res from Sixpoint last weekend. Pretty awesome!!! |
| 1:14 |
: I’ve got Resin and Global Warmer in the fridge, just have been too sick to try. Tonight!

 |
| 1:14 |
There is also a band called Alestorm… |
| 1:14 |
Broken Bells After the Disco for Maxamuz |
| 1:15 |
I’ve had Matt Moore since he came into the league. I would have to pay 16$ to keep him this year (14 team mixed). Time to finally cut bait? Owning Matt Moore is like having a stripper for a girlfriend. |
| 1:15 |
: I think you can give him/her one last chance at that price. Now I feel dirty.

 |
| 1:15 |
same q as spencer but eastern MA? |
| 1:16 |
: Does Jack’s Abby get out there? Or Night Shift? Otherwise, drive to Vermont http://beergraphs.com/leaderboards/?sp=&sbar=&q=®ion=us_ne&abv_min=0.0&abv_max=25.0&bar_min=-15.0&bar_max=19.0&popularity=all

 |
| 1:16 |
Did I imagine that you liked Dogfish Head? I cruised over to Beergraphs and saw only an above average rating but I could’ve sworn you were into it… |
| 1:17 |
: Yes, I don’t control the BG ratings, those are crowdsourced. I like DFH, especially the 75 minute IPA and some of their seasonal/rarer beers.

 |
| 1:17 |
any way to find average mlb game time temp by month? |
| 1:17 |
: Search for Jeff Zimmerman and temperature information, pretty sure he did something on this.

 |
| 1:17 |
2015 for the mets? the braves or nats have to explode haha |
| 1:17 |
: Well the Nats did last year.

 |
| 1:17 |
halestorm looks like a crappier version of evanescence, which was loaded with crap to begin with |
| 1:18 |
The Cubs make the playoffs in 20____? |
| 1:18 |
: 15/16, closer than many think IMO

 |
| 1:18 |
if the Mets make the playoffs in 2015, I’ll match your FG salary. If they don’t, will you match mine? |
| 1:18 |
: I don’t even know what you do and probably couldn’t.

 |
| 1:18 |
which rookies are u targeting this year? |
| 1:21 |
: Bradley Jr has a role, but isn’t a mixed leaguer. Castellanos has a role, but for a guy with a ‘plus hit tool’ his batting averages have been meh. Not sure he’s a mixed leaguer either. I’ll take Billy Hamilton, but I want to wait until the tenth or so, and so I won’t get him. Kolten Wong, not a mixed leaguer. Bogaerts might fall to me in the right draft. Don’t want to spend too much — K% is up in the air — but if it’s nearing round 20, I’m down. If T Walker gets the start, he’ll be on some of my mixed league teams.

 |
| 1:21 |
How would you rank this pitchers in redraft roto. Porcello, S. Gray, J. Parker, Cashner, A.J. Griffin |
| 1:21 |
 : Gray, Cash………Porcello Griff Parker

 |
| 1:22 |
re: first half second half shouldn’t temp change make fly ball hitters/pitchers have different values |
| 1:22 |
: yes, the problem is that velocity peaks in August and that has an effect too.

 |
| 1:23 |
Who do you think can provide 30+ SB and be available after the 15th round this year? |
| 1:24 |
: Villar, Eaton, Bourn, Gardner, Revere, Eric Young

 |
| 1:24 |
One of my leagues is switching from daily lineups and roto to weekly lineups and H2H. I have to pick five keepers and I have absolutely no idea how to pick them. Any thoughts? |
| 1:24 |
: Only real difference is that platoon issue players hard to roster/keep.

 |
| 1:24 |
Any tips for value hunting in really shallow leagues? I feel like anytime I hear about a nifty pick, it’s someone who is 50 picks below what I’d consider in my 10 team mixed. |
| 1:25 |
: Probably just use the rankings and look for top-ten guys on your waiver wire then.

 |
| 1:25 |
Bullpen catcher gives positive words towards Pineda’s changeup…however you want to take that news. Video of him throwing: http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2014/02/20/video-michael-pineda-throws-early-bullpen/ |
| 1:25 |
After the Disco has got me grooving over here and in a loving mood. I like Millhouse now. |
| 1:25 |
In an AL-Only league…interested in your thoughts on 2 players…Is Jose Quintana not getting enough love? And, do you think Desmond Jennings can break out this year? Thanks in advance |
| 1:26 |
: Quintana has one good pitch, I can see being skeptical, but he’s a mixed league final pitcher at worst imo. Jennings is who he is, aside from a lucky BABIP year, I don’t see why he’d improve at his age, with his amount of PA under his belt.

 |
| 1:26 |
Prob too late to get answered but what side you prefer? Gio/Perkins or Paxton/Arismendy Alcantara. thanks! |
| 1:26 |
: Gio side. I play for now.

 |
| 1:26 |
Woman play in the bigs in our lifetime? |
| 1:26 |
: Pitcher maybe? The knuckleballer from Japan was interested.

 |
| 1:26 |
dont get me wrong, love the chat, but i wanted to try out this new username |
| 1:27 |
How many steals for Goldie? |
| 1:27 |
: I have 13 but might move it to 11.

 |
| 1:27 |
 Goldy+Yelich or Trumbo+Kemp? Thx. |
| 1:28 |
: I think I’d take Goldy just because he’s the best player in the deal. It’s close though.

 |
| 1:28 |
Mets rotation by 2015 will be the best in baseball, you heard it here first. |
| 1:28 |
LOVE Resin and Global Warmer! Sixpoint is just an excellent brewery!! |
| 1:28 |
do you loke paxton or walker more? |
| 1:28 |
: Walker, but if you bring in price, might be Pax cause he’s cheap.

 |
| 1:30 |
 Over/under-Porcello a $13 pitcher next year |
| 1:30 |
 : under

 |
| 1:30 |
im a cardinals homer but how do you think the pirates and reds will fare |
| 1:30 |
: More optimistic about the Pirates, with Taillon and Polanco coming.

 |
| 1:30 |
burch smith is still rookie eligible… is he a risky solid milb pick in an NL only draft? |
| 1:30 |
 : he’s interesting.

 |
| 1:30 |
Ronnie Belliard once played major league baseball. |
| 1:30 |
Why you leaving Canada out of BG? |
| 1:31 |
 : they in there! http://beergraphs.com/leaderboards/?cc=CA

 |
| 1:31 |
 Your thoughts on Villar? |
| 1:31 |
 : Worried he’s going to have a .229 BA with that K%.

 |
| 1:31 |
Are you a fan of Noah Syndergaard? What’s his ceiling in fantasy? |
| 1:32 |
: Love the fastball. Need to see more of the breakers to know about his ceiling.

 |
| 1:32 |
with the focus of major league hitters seeming to focus more on HR, am i crazy to target some of the speed guys early in the draft and fill out power later? Seems like a lot of bargains who could hit 15-20 hrs and less steal guys later in the draft (unless its the michael bourne, rajai davis type who only provide steals). |
| 1:32 |
: I try for five-cat guys at the beginning so that I don’t have to get a 0 HR guy later.

 |
| 1:32 |
well gosh if a bullpen catcher is impressed, i’m sold |
| 1:32 |
RE: quintana. check quintana’s Pop up rate!!!!! is that a fluke or skill |
| 1:33 |
: Depends on who you ask. PU% (instead of IFFB%) has a decent year to year correlation though.

 |
| 1:34 |
: Verlander, Fernandez, Salazar, G Cole, Cobb, Fister sort of thing? Really like Fister.

 |
| 1:34 |
 Aaron Hicks? remember him? |
| 1:34 |
: My ALROY pick for last year lol.

 |
| 1:35 |
Erasmo Ramirez…can he be a solid final starting pitcher given a full year of health/opportunity. What do you expect from him this year? |
| 1:36 |
: Worried that he’s got too much Dillon Gee in him to be successful in the AL — great change, okay slider, iffy fastball. I’d be happier if he was at 93+ regularly like he was at one point. Still, you’d think that home park would work for him. If he gets a spot, I’ll probably own him again.

 |
| 1:36 |

I have no idea what this GIF is… |
| 1:36 |
Hosmer, chances of a real breakout? |
| 1:37 |
: Still hits too many GBs.

 |
| 1:37 |
Ike Davis slashes 240/330/490 this year tell me im wrong |
| 1:37 |
: 440 slg maybe. a .250 ISO is pretty generous.

 |
| 1:37 |
Thoughts on Kemp? Are you a buyer or seller in keeper league. |
| 1:38 |
: Can’t sell this low. Have him in my longest-term keeper league, and he’s slipped down to one of my worst keepers (stacked team, my infield is Votto/Carp(Altuve)/Tulo/Wright), but I’m not selling low.

 |
| 1:38 |
Would a pitching staff be ok with Anibal Sanchez and Alex Cobb as the 1&2? |
| 1:38 |
: Get a high three, and yes. On talent. Worried about Anibal’s health.

 |
| 1:38 |
In an auction where you are considering two possible strategies, how do figure out what price one will be? For instance, i want to either get (a) Joe Mauer and a scrub C for 35 dollars or (b) Sal Perez and Matt Wieters for the same $35. Is there a way to best determine which path to take while IN the auction? |
| 1:39 |
: You could throw a highly-ranked catcher that’s not on of your crew. Throw Santana?

 |
| 1:39 |
do you like kipnis as an early second round pick? 12 team |
| 1:39 |
 : yes

 |
| 1:39 |
Do you think he holds down SS for the whole year? |
| 1:39 |
: They’re not going to be good yet, so earliest Correa comes up is September.

 |
| 1:40 |
Are you buying Braun in the back half of the first round? |
| 1:40 |
: Sure. There’s risk in that part of the draft already anywya.

 |
| 1:40 |
What SS are you targeting if you can’t land the elites? |
| 1:41 |
: Brad Miller. Bogearts. Dozier. Lowrie. worst-case, Asdrubal.

 |
| 1:41 |
Will Erik Johnson be good enough to draft this year? Any upside or just a back end guy? |
| 1:42 |
: Pitch perips say the curve and cutter are okay, change is bad. I don’t think he’s a mixed leaguer on draft day.

 |
| 1:42 |
RE: Hicks. He has traditionally struggled his first run through a level, and then improved greatly. Is there any hope left for him? |
| 1:42 |
: I think so, particularly in real life and in OBP leagues. With Buxton coming hard, though, he has this year and that’s it.

 |
| 1:42 |
Is LOOGY the funnest baseball thing to say out loud? Lou-Gee. Looo- Gee |
| 1:42 |
 : Just hawked one.

 |
| 1:43 |
at what point does Jonathan Schoop get a shot to take over 2B in Baltimore? is his back still a real concern? |
| 1:43 |
: I really don’t think it’s Flaherty this year. Weeks/Schoop. Weeks first shot, maybe, with Schoop going down to prove health and talent.

 |
| 1:44 |
Why doesn’t anyone take head to head seriously as a fantasy format? |
| 1:44 |
: Plenty of people like it!

 |
| 1:44 |
Pick one for this year: Oscar/Yelich/Springer |
| 1:44 |
: Yelich. Oscar won’t get the PAs, and Springer has high bust rate with that K%, will have low BA most likely.

 |
| 1:44 |
who you like better Cole or salazar? Thanks. |
| 1:45 |
: G Cole. Higher floor, better league.

 |
| 1:45 |
what closers are you targeting? |
| 1:47 |
: Whoever falls to me really. At the first spot, been getting Uehara and Rosenthal as my first closer and happy with that. Avoiding soriano and papelbon and street. Like Cishek, Henderson later. Feliz, Brothers, Axford later. Crain, Santos, Clippard even later.

 |
| 1:47 |
ass-drooble. why did his parents hate him |
| 1:47 |
What’s the most “keepers” you’ve ever been allowed in a league? 5 or 6 seems pretty standard? any deeper leagues with 10+? |
| 1:48 |
 : I’m in a 20-team 28-keeper, an 18-team 25-keeper and a 12-team 25-keeper right now.

 |
| 1:48 |
Thoughts on Profar? Do you put anything into guys being “in a good lineup” |
| 1:48 |
: More R and RBI than similarly ranked players is important actualy.

 |
| 1:48 |
Thats SIR Bogearts to you Eno..He is a knight. |
| 1:48 |
 I play H2H! |
| 1:49 |
Am I a bad father for teaching my 5 yr old daughter how to hawk a loogy? |
| 1:49 |
: My two-year old is already imitating me.

 |
| 1:49 |
i once played ‘who let the dogs out’ 13 times in a row on a touch tunes at a bar…the bar emptied fairly quickly. |
| 1:49 |
what/who would be your at-bat or closer entrance music? |
| 1:49 |
 : Loud pipes by ratatat.

 |
| 1:49 |
 Grilli is closer until… |
| 1:49 |
 : Arm surgery.

 |
| 1:50 |
 17 years! |
| 1:50 |
: oh maybe 17 years, but without the intro part.

 |
| 1:50 |
to E – our favorite was to play wake me up before you go 5 times in a row right as we were leaving |
| 1:50 |
H2H is a football format, not baseball. Thats why! |
| 1:50 |

nope. |
| 1:50 |
: And I’m taking my shell and leaving…

 |
| 1:50 |
 : Thanks guys!

 |
| 1:50 |
 : Next week!

Is Felix the next SP not to be ready for opening day? If so, what’s wrong?
Why would you think that?
Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez is on a slower schedule early in the spring, and he will not throw his second bullpen session of camp until Thursday, Feb. 20.
