Eno Sarris: Past health issues predict future ones, so I think he’ll be good again, and probably miss some time. Not surprising at all that he brought a first baseman’s mitt to camp this year.

How do you see the logjam in the Rockies OF and 1B working out? Does Dickerson get the 444 PA steamer projects?

Eno Sarris: The plate appearance totals come from our depth charts, mostly. I think it’s a battle for CF honestly, doubt the team *really* wants to run CarGo out there. So it’s Dickerson, Blackmon and Stubbs fighting for CF and backup. Blackmon has the best skill set for being a fourth OF I’d say, and Stubbs is a righty. So yeah, I think Dickerson can get just less than a 2/3 share of one starting spot.

Eno Sarris: I would. Arcia is a power-only guy in a park that suppresses power and Salazar is about to be one of the best pitchers in the league.

Eno, tried hitting up Dave and Jeff with this one to no avail. Are there any studies to bunting against the shift? I know its hard to bunt against MLB pitching but there have to be some times where it just makes sense to get a runner on.

Eno Sarris: There have been pieces, particularly about Teix and Howard, but I can’t find them easily right now in a chat. I think the problem is that the sluggers don’t bunt often, so their chance of being successful is lower than guys with more practice.

Eno Sarris: Welcome! Pitchers get hurt more often, stay hurt longer, and are more difficult to project. Also, you only need “SP” and “RP” while you need tons of different positions. I wouldn’t get a starting pitcher until round four, and plenty here wait even longer.

I listen regularly to sleeper/bust and I am trying to balance what you say about yan gomes, ramos and Trumbo and where you list them in your rankings. also, when you do your projections, do u reduce/increase figures when they are significantly different than “consensus”? thanks

Eno Sarris: I basically use Steamer and the Fans as two poles, and move the projection towards one or the other when I like/don’t like a player. Sometimes I’ll go beyond one of the poles by the tiniest of bits.

Got into a bit of a debate on this? What happened to the pitch value on Homer Bailey’s slider? During his best year, he really only had two very good pitches. The fastball and two-seamer.

Eno Sarris: Had to check the pitch peripherals. Must be a sequencing thing. Slider got 16% whiffs, that’s above-average, curve got 12%, above-average, Split got 21% whiffs, that’s above-average. Everything was above-average by whiffs.

Eno Sarris: Thinking about trading Matt Carpenter for Gerrit Cole straight up, round 15 for round 20. Maybe I can ask for Leonys Martin round 20 too. You like?

First thought on Simmons was that it would have made sense for Braves to go through Arb system with him, since so much value comes from defense which isn’t valued as highly. However, 17 homers compares favorably at SS, and could see BA bounce back. Smart moves by Braves?

Eno Sarris: Defense also has a way of coming back in to play — he started every day at short, so he gets lumped in with all shortstops that started every day at short and had same service time.

Eno Sarris: Too many things have to go right for it to be top. But I bet enough go right that they are in the mix at the end of the year. I think Nova settles in as a mid-rotation guy, Kuroda is fine, CC has a bit of a bounce-back. Pineda? Dunno, even if he gets his velocity back, haven’t seen a change I like from him.

Eno Sarris: A beer shouldn’t have a negative BAR and a positive Style+, I’ll look into that. BAR has popularity in it. If you not concerned with that, Style+ is good way to know it’s above average in its style.

Eno Sarris: Russell doesn’t have the same K% risk, better plate discipline, more well-rounded game, higher floor if perhaps lower ceiling.

Do you think Chris Tillman could break out in 2013? He is still fairly young, saw the Ks go up and walks go down in the second half, and his velocity is back up. He seemingly has very good stuff, but just needs to put it together.

Eno Sarris: Problem with him is that none of his pitches is above-average by whiff rate other than his cutter, and only his curve gets above-average grounders. I think his stuff looks better to us than to hitters.

Eno Sarris: Seasonal splits aren’t predictive. But you could try to take more pitchers in the first half (cold air keeps homers down) and more hitters in the second half.

Eno Sarris: Listen to the ways people describe their breakouts. For me, I’m looking for superlative pitches in a good pitch mix, using pitch peripherals. Also, good park situations. For hitters, I often look for guys with pedigree that had good peripherals and bad results (rizzo).

Eno Sarris: Bradley Jr has a role, but isn’t a mixed leaguer. Castellanos has a role, but for a guy with a ‘plus hit tool’ his batting averages have been meh. Not sure he’s a mixed leaguer either. I’ll take Billy Hamilton, but I want to wait until the tenth or so, and so I won’t get him. Kolten Wong, not a mixed leaguer. Bogaerts might fall to me in the right draft. Don’t want to spend too much — K% is up in the air — but if it’s nearing round 20, I’m down. If T Walker gets the start, he’ll be on some of my mixed league teams.

with the focus of major league hitters seeming to focus more on HR, am i crazy to target some of the speed guys early in the draft and fill out power later? Seems like a lot of bargains who could hit 15-20 hrs and less steal guys later in the draft (unless its the michael bourne, rajai davis type who only provide steals).
