Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 4/10/14
11:46 |
: Yes! I’m back!
|
11:48 |
:
|
11:48 |
: for some reason this video featured prominently in my Jamaican vacation.
|
12:00 |
Hey Eno! My league’s first week of free agency is coming up and I need your guidance. I need to fill my UTIL spot and the best available options are Colabello, Solarte and Almonte. Thoughts on all three and who is most likely to remain a full-time starter in 2014? |
12:00 |
: ALMONTE! D at important position, right age, good enough swing (don’t love Solarte’s swing at all).
|
12:00 |
What do you make of the current closing situations in Oakland and Detroit? Which reliever should we grab on each team if we’re looking for potential handcuffs to Johnson and Nathan? |
12:01 |
: Oakland is now the dreaded committee. If Cook was healthy and showing good mechanics, he’d be my guy. Only three things linked to closer change: handedness, velocity, strikeouts. Cook owns those things when healthy.
|
12:01 |
Hi, do you buy Tyler Flowers breakout? |
12:01 |
: No.
|
12:01 |
Eno, my team has been devastated by injuries. Should I pick up Eovaldi or Richards in standard 5X5 keeper? |
12:02 |
: You know.. Richards has three pitches, even if the curve and slider are both breakers. I like him, they both have velocity and nice parks and aren’t great to start in every game.
|
12:02 |
What do you make of a hitter that is swinging way less than career average, and also making way less contact than career average? Specifically, I’m asking about Sal Perez. |
12:03 |
: Swing rates become stable fairly quickly and in his case, it might help his walk rate. But yeah sometimes you lay off pitches and start getting in bad counts — see my Trumbo piece today, at the end he talks about that.
|
12:03 |
Guess who’s back, back again, Eno’s back, tell a friend |
12:03 |
What to do with Braun? Hold? Sell high? Sell low? Head spinning. O/U .280 and 20/20 the rest of the way? |
12:03 |
: Hold. Enjoy the roller coaster.
|
12:03 |
Tell me something I didn’t know about Jamaican beer. (Which is pretty much anything about Jamaican beer that isn’t Red Stripe) |
12:04 |
: Not only do they love water beer in Jamaica, they also love sludge beer. Dragon Stout and Guinness Extra Foreign Stout (not the draught) are the second and third most popular beers, and they are THICK.
|
12:04 |
Currently have Baez on my bench in a 14 team keep 6 (so keepers are relatively shallow). Would you drop him for Archie Bradley? |
12:04 |
: No. Bradley not showing great command right now.
|
12:04 |
My Chase Utley is no longer leading in WAR thanks to the flu |
12:05 |
: Next, it’ll be some rest for that degenerative knee condition.
|
12:05 |
Need to find someone to replace Josh Hamilton, preferably with a little pop. Would you pick up Kubel, Morse, or Blackmon? |
12:06 |
: I prefer Blackmon over all, but Morse for pop. He looks healthy at least.
|
12:06 |
Eno! Thoughts on Founders KBS? How long should one consider aging it– or any beer that is “supposed” to be aged. Patience is not my strongest suit… |
12:07 |
: I don’t know about aging for most beers. But if you drink a beer and it feels ‘hot’ — the alcohol comes through too much — I do think aging can help a bit. The biggest difference I’ve seen on aging is in Goose Island Bourbon County Stouts, I’d almost automatically decide to age those.
|
12:07 |
ENO! Love your chats. Would you consider dropping either Peavy or Sabathia for Skaggs in a 12-team 5×5 dynasty? Seems crazy…but VELOCITY! Thanks. |
12:07 |
: Peavy for Skaggs is not crazy. But what I would really try to do is drop a bench hitter for Skaggs.
|
12:07 |
magic hat just posted a tweet referring to their own garlic beer as “a daring, imaginative move” that “wasn’t meant to be”. i guess imaginative is one word for it |
12:07 |
: Yuck.
|
12:07 |
Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum must be friends now. |
12:07 |
Do you like MArkakis this year? It’s a contract year. |
12:08 |
: Contract year mostly only means more PA if anything (playing through injury) and that’s the only thing Markakis has been good for so far.
|
12:08 |
Is Plouffe making a leap or just early season hot streak? |
12:09 |
: It’s super early, but he’s seen 164 pitches and only swung and missed at 4.5% or so. That could be a big deal if it continues.
|
12:09 |
how long were you wanting to use “kluberization” in an article? |
12:09 |
: IT’S KLUBERING TIME
|
12:09 |
I’ve been thinking about this all day and was hoping there was a chat today. Now, how much do you think the size of a hitter’s strike zone affects his K% or totals? That may not be a good way to phrase it. Basically, what I’m asking is do you think Alex Rios strikes out more often than the would if his strike zone were smaller? |
12:10 |
: I’ve actually seen something on this I think, but I can’t remember what the conclusion was. The thing is, if your strike zone is bigger, your arms are longer.
|
12:10 |
![]() Lude. |
12:10 |
: Dude.
|
12:10 |
Duda hit 2 HR the other day. BEAST INCARNATE! |
12:10 |
: And when he’s a star, you and me alone can say, we saw it first.
|
12:10 |
Jesse Chavez … journeyman late bloomer finally putting it all together? Or so-so rotation filler who happened to have a couple of good starts? |
12:11 |
: Hi change isn’t really good, it’s just good enough. I think he’ll have some homer problems in tougher parks. And Griffin will take his job back.
|
12:11 |
Zunino, TdA, Grandal or Mesoraco at catcher going forward |
12:11 |
: Grandal or Mesoraco. Mesoraco.
|
12:12 |
Quick! I must know: are you yet aware that Charlie Morton is a must-own? My league mates are not. |
12:12 |
: He’s back down to 91.1, I think he’ll have some homer problems this year.
|
12:13 |
Welcome back, Eno. I was wondering why you guys had Daniel Murphy so high in your rankings. I see that his numbers were kind trending upward but last year seemed to jump dramatically. Obviously you guys must not think it’s a fluke. It’s early in the season and I have him but was debating dropping him for Rendon as he’s in a better lineup. Thoughts? Thanks! |
12:14 |
: I prefer Rendon and I think I did before the season, or it was close. (checking) Okay I had Rendon 10 and Murphy 9, so I’d take Rendon now.
|
12:14 |
I have Jim Johnson and Joe Nathan rostered, 10-team league, holds and saves counted, do I panic like a manic at this point? Anyone I cam maybe stream? |
12:15 |
: Is it saves+holds? If so, you should be okay, JJ will get some high leverage innings again eventually. But he doesn’t K, if it’s sv+hld, I’d go pick up someone like Kelley. If its saves and holds as diff categories, don’t worry, you in ten-teamer, you should be able to find someone.
|
12:15 |
Trade Braun for Bruce and Axford? |
12:15 |
: No, Axford velocity down and he’s wild and he’s just a closer.
|
12:16 |
Does Nate Eovaldi’s lack of a change up hurt his chances of being a valuable fantasy SP? |
12:16 |
: yes. Wrote about it! Look at his page! He can be good in short term, but in dynasties and the like, I’d sell this year or next.
|
12:17 |
N-ENO, P-ENtO and the S-ENtO Maria Is Ryan Cook is going to close for the A’s? Also, is Nathan done? Should we all take the left turn at Albuquerque? |
12:17 |
: I like cook if he’s healthy. Nathan’s probably going to hang on through this contract but I wouldn’t be surprised if he was replaced.. next year? This year, he’s really the only option.
|
12:18 |
: No!
|
12:18 |
Should I panic about Shelby Miller? |
12:18 |
: oops
|
12:18 |
who would u pick up to come up first to the big leagues. Polanco, Bradley, baez, Grey, Butler, Tavares |
12:18 |
: Polanco because Snider.
|
12:18 |
ENO! Welcome back! Thoughts on Mookie Betts? Do the Sox have to make room for him if he keeps destroying the minors? |
12:19 |
: It’s NSFW how much I love Mookie Betts. Scouts thought he could CF or SS, but more likely I bet he plays for someone other than Boston at second.
|
12:19 |
I traded Braun for McCutchen only to have it vetoed by the league. What are your thoughts on trade vetoes? |
12:20 |
: Hate them so much. When I’m commish, it’s auto-approve.
|
12:20 |
Grokyo has been absolutely brutal is he worth dropping or should i continue to ride out the strom |
12:20 |
: The strikeout rate is concerning. I think he’ll cut it, but it’s worrisome. As usual, I’ll say, see if you can drop a bit piece for a short-term 2B until the Gyork Store figures it out.
|
12:21 |
Meija have staying power as a SP this year? |
12:21 |
: Yeah he’ll be good and in the rotation for 120 IP if he can stay in one piece.
|
12:21 |
If the Nats eventually go to 1b Zimmerman 2b Espinosa ss Desmond 3b Rendon, 1) What city is LaRoche playing his home games in? and 2) Zimmerman, not Werth, would become the most overpaid National, right? |
12:22 |
: I think this will happen. I think LaRoche could end up in New York or somewhere big market where they need a 1b/dh guy to move around. And yeah that would make Zimm pretty overpaid.
|
12:22 |
Hey Eno – loved the Eovaldi piece. Is Eovaldi, Erasmo, M. Perez the correct order for breakout/upside in a QS and K/9 10-team league? |
12:22 |
: Yeah. I’m not high on Perez. Others would have Perez second, but I don’t see a breaker, and his sinker is just good not great.
|
12:23 |
: Hold on. I have to turn off Chris Russo. Stop yelling at me.
|
12:23 |
How Nick Punto inspired a 2014 revival enlisting Josh Hamilton and Yusiel Puig. My column: |
12:23 |
You already plugged it a bit, but I loved the Trumbo piece. Made me feel a lot better about targeting him in both of my leagues. |
12:23 |
If you can get your hands on some, check out Great Lakes Chillwave Double IPA |
12:24 |
: Barely pulled an interlude together, people.
|
12:24 |
Went to Jamaica for our honeymoon. Came back with viral encephalitis. No joke, not cool. Was basically crazy or asleep for 3 weeks. Anyways, to more important stuff. What do you think about Mesoraco’s quick start? Will he be full time soon? And if so, would you value him over Gomes? What about Ruiz if he sticks in the top 4 of the lineup? |
12:24 |
: woof. condolences. I like Mesoraco but those other two are good too. Maybe in dynasties, Mesoraco is the highest upside. For this year, though, it’s Gomes for me.
|
12:25 |
Brad Miller has been really scuffling. Plate discipline looks to be the culprit. What are your thoughts on him? |
12:25 |
: He’s reaching a ton but hasn’t done it in the past. Maybe he’s pressing. That’s a real-life thing.
|
12:25 |
: (I still like him)
|
12:26 |
Hi Eno. I recently discovered Leffe(Blonde)at my local grocery store. I am traveling to Brussels next month. I want to do some tours of local breweries. Since I heard you are just as good at beer as you are in baseball, please give me some recommendations other than Stella |
12:26 |
: Oh my god if you can get to Cantillon, do it. Or Westvleteren. Or Drei Fonteinen. Seriously, those are possibly the top three international breweries.
|
12:26 |
I just dropped Moustakas for Dee Gordon, slid Gordon to 2B and Rendon to 3B. I needed steals and am waiting for Machado (the title of the next great baseball novel). Plus, I needed SBs. Good move overall? Or: do you believe Gordon will continue to be productive? |
12:27 |
: It’s okay but Dee not playing every day.
|
12:27 |
Does Carlos Martinez break the rotation this year if some gets hurt or will he continue to be a set up guy |
12:27 |
: Not sure he has the arsenal to be the type of pitcher they want him to be. The change hasn’t come and he has wicked platoon splits and now he’s into his second year in pen..
|
12:27 |
How were the beef patties? |
12:27 |
: Some were terrible. The great ones were plus plus.
|
12:27 |
Are you sitting Nate the Great (Eovaldi) @PHI? |
12:27 |
: yes.
|
12:27 |
Can Sergio Santos steal the job from Janssen? |
12:28 |
: yes. he has more gas and Ks. and the injury, even when he comes back, gives them an excuse.
|
12:28 |
Sell high on colabello for ruggiano? |
12:28 |
: yes on first, meh on second.
|
12:29 |
Can I drop Todd Frazier in 10-tm if my every day start is Pedro? Only 3 bench spots. |
12:29 |
: They’re both barely top 10 so yeah guess so.
|
12:29 |
were you an ultimate warrior fan? |
12:30 |
: Yes, for a short time. It’s sad. All those guys were on some crazy steroids.
|
12:30 |
Grandal over Jaso or Mesoraco? |
12:30 |
: Mes/Grand/Jaso
|
12:30 |
I love Guinness FES just because I feel like a 2000 BC caveman drinking it and as sludgy as it is there’s something gratifying |
12:30 |
Stephen Colbert is tired of being Stephen Colbert, so in a few years he will get to be Stephen Colbert instead of Stephen Colbert. |
12:30 |
One time in Port Maria, a man cut off a woman at a bus stop, so she accused him of not being man. He dropped trou, guess he proved her wrong. Where was I going with this….. |
12:30 |
: You know I kinda love that lude.
|
12:31 |
Are you still high on Marcus Stroman? Does he get called up in June? |
12:31 |
: yup still like him.
|
12:31 |
Rank these deep MI: Amarista, Dietrich, Giavotella, Ryan Roberts, Logan Forsythe |
12:31 |
: Dietrich Amarista um.
|
12:31 |
Does Nunez really get the ABs over Florimon at Twins SS position? |
12:32 |
: Florimon’s bat is truly terrible, but Nunez’ glove is not great… Might be O/D platoon.
|
12:32 |
whats the deal with Sonny Gray Eno? Velocity worry you a lot? Sell high candidate? He needs those extra 2 mph to make him the groundball machine inducing strikeout ace I want on my fantasy team. |
12:33 |
: I’m a little worried but let’s give him three starts. He also has about a mph from now to August, so he could average 91.5 on the year. would rather he averaged closer to 93, too.
|
12:33 |
no one will trade with me and I need a closer–so I have to dump a SP and go to the wire–I have kazmir, Estrada, kluber, cashner, tanaka, and sale? who get the heave ho? |
12:33 |
: What about your bench hitters. If not… Kaz.
|
12:33 |
does Andrew Heaney get called up this summer and is he worth a buck in otto? |
12:34 |
: I think he’ll be up and useful, but not great. Low-ish K9 but also low HR9.
|
12:34 |
How much do you like Nick Castellanos? He’s been pretty damn impressive so far. |
12:35 |
: Lots of strange things in his line — look at his swinging strike rate, BABIP, it’s weird in there. But do I think he can hit .280 now, which is a little bit higher than I thought before? Yes.
|
12:35 |
hey look at brandon morrow with 9 Ks to go with 0 walks… velocity up as well… |
12:35 |
: Crazy. Maybe he’ll give us 120 good innings this year.
|
12:35 |
Do you think Parra will still get chances in Cinci now that Broxton is back? Being the only lefty in pen hurts his chances? |
12:35 |
: Manager said Broxton so I’ll believe him since Parra a lefty.
|
12:36 |
Just saw a comment on Founders beer. I love their Dirty Bastard scotch ale. Do you know any other good Scotch ales? |
12:36 | : Not my style but here’s the BeerGraphs leaderboard |
12:36 |
Do you like Garret Richards for a breakout seas? |
12:37 |
: Not even throwing the change now, but with a curve and slider and gas, he’s always been near a breakout.
|
12:37 |
Welcome back Eno. Straily Cole or Wood as best daily play today? I’m partial to Straily and that weak looking MIN lineup! |
12:38 |
: I love them all. If Straily cheaper than Cole, go that way.
|
12:38 |
Would I be crazy to trade Donaldson for Prado 12 team H2H 7×6 AVG R,RBI, HR, TB SB ? I’d still have Longoria Arenado and Bogaerts with 3B elgibility. I need Prado at 2B and OF. |
12:38 |
: It’s not crazy if you can use Prado at 2b.
|
12:38 |
will jordan or roark be the guy out of the rotation when fister comes back? |
12:38 |
: Roark.
|
12:38 |
Evan Gattis. Are there any C’s generaaly on a 12 team waiver wire youd look at over this guy? |
12:39 |
: Gomes?
|
12:39 |
What are your thoughts on Josh Beckett? Would you drop Drew Hutchinson or Wily Peralta for him? |
12:39 |
: Hutch in a non keeper sure
|
12:39 |
: (but Beckett has one foot in the pitching grave.)
|
12:39 |
How would you value Manny Machado in a dynasty league? I was looking to trade him, but got nothing. Is it more valuable to just hold on to him? |
12:40 |
: At this point, yeah. He’s pendulumed to under-rated.
|
12:40 |
Why not Gregerson in OAK? Seems obvious after many successful years as a reliever in SD. |
12:40 |
: Crazy thing: three-year FIP, three-year ERA, experience closing and projected ERA — none of these things has been linked to closer change in the numbers.
|
12:41 |
Ubaldo Jiménez is off to a rough start, his 194k from last year is the only thing keeping him on my roster at the moment. I know it’s early but what’s your thought on his future? |
12:41 |
: Boston and New York. Let’s see how he does against someone else first.
|
12:41 |
Do you sell high on me before others figure out how many pitches I’m whiffing on, or do you ride out the wave? |
12:42 |
: I don’t believe the 30 homer hype, if you find someone who does, giddyap.
|
12:42 |
How would you rank these RP in terms of ratios and ability to get saves chances: Meek, Bastardo, Alburqueque, Betances, Wade Davis, Germen, Storen |
12:42 |
: Al Al, Bastardo, Germen, Storen
|
12:42 |
Thoughts on Smoltz saying the k zone needs to be expanded not wider but taller? |
12:43 |
: With strikeout rate at an all-time high?
|
12:43 |
So #cancelcolbert worked, he’s replacing Letterman. Can’t believe this is happening! |
12:43 |
: Sad for me. I suppose I can watch his stuff a day late on another network but I like the network he’s on.
|
12:43 |
ENOsaurus who do you like ROS Taijuan or Cingrani |
12:43 |
: Cingrani.
|
12:43 |
Drew signs with whom? When? For how much? |
12:44 |
: Tigers, one year ten mill.
|
12:44 |
Mike Moustakas is never going to turn his career around is he? |
12:44 |
: His walk rate always put him in a bad bin. But this year isn’t over yet.
|
12:44 |
![]() This was Dudas training in the offseason. Obviously not him in the picture because he didn't want to make the lens break with his awesomeness. |
12:44 |
Discovered Heavy Seas Loose Cannon this weekend. So good. |
12:44 |
: Good stuff.
|
12:45 |
You’d drop a Lynn or Ross for Skaggs tho? |
12:45 |
: Tyson Ross is down 3 mph. yes.
|
12:45 |
Is there any scouting information anywhere on Umpires strike zones? I would imagine Vegas would have information about that as it can really impact the game when certain umps have bigger or smaller strike zones. How far in advance does the public know who is going to be calling balls and strikes? |
12:46 |
Baseballheatmaps.com. The thing is, you’re right — you only know that umpires for a game too close to game time. After game one of a series, though, you can figure it out (patterns).
: Google Jeff Zimmerman, and I think he has some on |
12:47 |
Corrasco or jesse Chavez, i have room for one… unless I drop Gausman??? |
12:47 |
: It might be ok to drop CC and then get him later, but JC is a temp starter. I STILL LOVE GAUSMAN!
|
12:48 |
:
|
12:48 |
: This song was also important in Jamaica for some reason.
|
12:49 |
In the market for saves, what are the chances I’d regret dropping Eovaldi for Cook? |
12:49 |
: After a bad game in Philly, you’ll probably be able to get Eovaldi later if it’s not Cook.
|
12:49 |
Does Santos hold onto the job? I have 4 closers (Chapman, Kenley, Holland) and can only start 3… trade a stud or just drop Santos when Chapman comes back? |
12:49 |
: Just stay pat for now.
|
12:49 |
I bailed on Braun and traded him for Puig and Shelby Miller. Its a 10 team head to head points league. Decent trade? |
12:50 |
: That’s okay. In ten-teamers, though, you probably dropped a decent player.
|
12:50 |
Drop Wong for Walker? |
12:50 |
: Sure.
|
12:50 |
Does anyone ever talk about how the DFS industry is basically predicated on the very thing we generally guard against in Fantasy? (Small sample size). How are more people not aware that DFS is basically a racket? |
12:51 |
: It’s a completely different brand of playing. But! If you read our pieces, our analysis is not based on SSS stuff. No mention of batter vs pitcher for example. There are ways to use baseball research to put yourself in the right place for success. Think of the GM versus the Manager. The GM thinks saber and finds value. The manager tries to put those pieces in the right place.
|
12:51 |
Sup Eno. |
12:51 |
: Sup.
|
12:52 |
Eno! My sister isn’t much of a beer drinker, but she’s been kind of warming up to IPAs. I live in Bell’s/Founder’s land, but really want to make sure I get something good and accessible, any suggestions! Love the chats. |
12:52 |
http://beergraphs.com/leade… and this http://beergraphs.com/leade… are perfect for your situation.
: this |
12:53 |
What’s Ventura’s ceiling this year? If he throws that cheddar AND keeps the walks down… yikes. |
12:53 |
: I love him but there’s still something missing for me. The change is good enough, the curve looks good but seems predictable, easier to lay off than you might expect. Not sure about the K9.
|
12:53 |
For what it’s worth with Nathan his velocity came back in last night’s outing so I don’t see any real reason to be too concerned going forward. |
12:53 |
can we take a momentary break from fantasy speculating and get a comment on MLB’s “clarification” of what a catch is??? Can I add, WTF!? um, so a catch isn’t a catch until there is a clean transfer to the throwing hand?? HUH?!?! |
12:53 |
Just FYI. With the exception of Bauer’s spot start yesterday, all 13 Indians pitchers velocity is down compared to last year by about 2mph on average. Also every pitcher they’ve faced is also down. I’m guessing measurement error. |
12:54 |
: Hey that was informative!
|
12:54 |
could the cubs be competitve as soon as next year? i mean, that’s not totally crazy, right? |
12:54 |
: I think so. They need to find some pitching, improve the pen, and a couple of their hitting prospects need to break out quickly.
|
12:54 |
Please weigh in on the big issue of our times: A.J. Pollock or Lorenzo Cain? Nate McClouth, if playing time is less of an issue? |
12:55 |
: Cain. PT always an issue, and Cain also has decent upside.
|
12:55 |
At what point through a strong/slow year do you think a player can expect to keep up his level of production through the year vs. his proj based on prior years? |
12:55 |
: The only thing that we’re close to believing for position players right now is swing%, and it’s not always clear what the result of a change in that category means. Soon, we’ll know if a new swSTR% or K% is stable, and that’s pretty huge.
|
12:56 |
You tweeted about Tanaka and his pitches recently… saying the slider needs work, have you looked at the swinging and miss rate with it? |
12:57 |
: The slider is good when it’s good. He’s just hanging it some. The homers are mostly on sliders. I think it’s grip. He’s working with a new ball and it’s cold. I think he’s a good/great pitcher.
|
12:58 |
Oh man, I heard Harold Reynolds make the following argument on MLB Live about one week ago: The Kershaw injury isn’t a big deal, because even if he misses 5-6 starts that’s “only 5 or 6 wins.” He finished the thought by saying that that’s not a big deal over a 162-game season. Let’s count the ways in which that is a terrible argument…. |
12:58 |
Per Darren Rovell, “Mariners announce they’ll tap different kegs of craft beer every Friday home game, sell $5 pints” |
12:58 |
: Man I need to go to SafeCo.
|
12:58 |
Do you like Betts more than a guy like Odor for fantasy purposes? |
12:58 |
: I do. I might be alone.
|
12:59 |
when is it time to panic with my fantasy team? End of May? End of June? |
12:59 |
: End of May.
|
12:59 |
thoughts on when Henderson is closing again? |
12:59 |
: Soon. The velocity is back up.
|
12:59 |
ike davis should be a yankee |
12:59 |
: See? Something like that.

![]() I'd be highly impressed, and we know it matters, if you can tell me who those two fellas are. Picture is in 1913 in Cleveland. |
1:00 |
: I disappoint people regularly, so this is no surprise.
|
1:00 |
Rank these guys in order of likelihood of getting traded: Gregarious, Weeks, Absurdal Cabrera, Aramis Ramirez, Cozart |
1:00 |
: ABSURDAL CABRERA YESSSSSSS. (to answer your question, Didi number one. Weeks second).
|
1:00 |
How long does Veras keep his closing job for the Cubs? |
1:00 |
: August? When he’s traded again?
|
1:01 |
Hi Eno, which catcher would you prefer just for this season: Yan Gomez or mesoraco? |
1:01 |
: Gomes
|
1:01 |
He’s terrible, high heat isn’t going to last |
1:01 |
: Ventura? That’s the concern long term, with his size. But this year?
|
1:02 |
Dee Gordon, disgraced shortstop, son to a retired pitcher, WILL HAVE HIS REVENGE! …at least until that BABIP comes back to Earth. |
1:02 |
Hi Eno, who would you preffer ROS sabathia or lincecum??? |
1:02 |
: CC
|
1:02 |
Bee tee dubs, that sandwich you had the other day was a Pittsburgh-style sandwich (with cole slaw and fries on top), not Philadelphia |
1:02 |
: Yah I fixed the piece. I saw that this is a common mistake, in my defense.
|
1:02 |
JB Shuck worth a bench spot? |
1:02 |
: eh, little power or speed, in a platoon…
|
1:03 |
Smyly used again in relief yday… just keeping him loose til his start or is he being shifted out? |
1:03 |
: Three inning stint so yeah I think so.
|
1:03 |
Starlin Castro looks to have some swagger again. Is he back? |
1:03 |
: I think aggression serves him well. .280/10/15 always possible for him.
|
1:03 |
Does money play a role in whether or not Cook become closer? I’ve read this in some places in regards to Cook and other relievers… |
1:04 |
: I wrote about this earlier in the year, and it’s a concern, some teams don’t want to have expensive young relievers. BUT! Melvin’s said this is a win-now team, and you don’t trade Choice for Gentry to save money. Or trade for JJ. So I think the A’s will do what they think is best for wins.
|
1:04 |
The Depth Charts are “hand crafted,” no? How does FG decide when/how to incorporate unexpected/illogical managerial decisions? E.g., Saunders is projected for 455 PAs in the Ms’ outfield, Morrison 210, when it looks like reality may be the reverse. |
1:05 |
: We’re just making educated guesses. I’ll see who’s in on those and we’ll conference.
|
1:05 |
Tanaka had 22 swing and misses last night on 5 different pitches, 10 with the slider. You think the k’s will continue or should come back to reality? |
1:05 |
: He’s good! I doubt he’ll have a 22% swinging strike rate though, that’d be some kind of record.
|
1:06 |
I won’t say that I started the whole “saying ‘woof’ to express emotion” thing, but I will say I independently invented it. |
1:06 |
find Leffe Radieuse (Red top) in Belgium. Pure deliciousness. |
1:06 |
Dickey or Estrada as a streamer today? |
1:06 |
: Dickey
|
1:07 |
: hmmm. Well I have Estrada ahead of Dickey in my ranks I think… just looked at Philly park and picked Dickey. I’ll stick with RAD.
|
1:07 |

Juicy Patti…the Papa Johns of Jamaica |

1:07 |
Taijuan Walker is coming back soon — what % of J. Fernandez is he this year? Should I drop Ubaldo, W. Peralta or A. Hicks for him? Also, beer. |
1:08 |
: I’d drop Peralta for him, Peralta has a low ceilling.
|
1:08 |
What things should be stabilizing soon? |
1:08 |
: I think it’s swing%, GB% then K% in that order from 50-150 PA.
|
1:08 |
SSS i know, but I have a sinking feeling my fantasy team is already done. talk me off the ledge |
1:08 |
: Just look at some BABIPs, I bet there are some extreme numbers there.
|
1:09 |
I have two of Eric Young Jr., Rajai Davis, and Jonathon Villar occupying my bench. Which one would you recomment dropping for a pitcher on the waiver wire? It’s a 12 team league and I could use more quality starts… |
1:09 |
: Lagares is killing it, and RD should get more PA than EY when the other Young is back…
|
1:09 |
MLB just tweeted that Cole Hamels first name is Colbert. |
1:10 |
: Stephen Colbert Hamels
|
1:10 |
Someone in my league just dropped Kluber. Drop Tyson Ross for him? |
1:10 |
: yes
|
1:10 |
THE STRO-MAN COMETH |
1:10 |
Will a manager or a GM be fired first? (prediction as to who?) |
1:10 |
: Managers always go first but I’m not sure Arizona is going to enjoy the results from Trader Towers’ recent burn.
|
1:11 |
Who’s the next closer to likely lose his job? |
1:11 |
: K-rod, then Valverde.
|
1:11 |
Will Rizzo hit 30 bombs this season and over a .250 average |
1:11 |
: I had him at .275/28.
|
1:12 |
How many ABs you think Derek Norris will get? He seems to have improved against righties in spring and 2014. And he is the first openly Feral player |
1:12 |
: They’re starting to use him against righties, so that’s something interesting. If you remember back, there was some excitement about him as a prospect, too. I got him in AL-LABR because I was hoping for 400 PA.
|
1:12 |
Do you think Kole Calhoun could be a 20hr guy? |
1:13 |
: I have him under that, especially in that stadium.
|
1:13 |
Do you anticipate Nate Jones getting the closer’s job at some point this season? |
1:13 |
: Here’s where I believe financials may really matter. Lindstrom has a fixed cost, Jones may close in 2015/2016.
|
1:13 |
Important question: Mexican or Chinese for lunch? |
1:14 |
: Mexican, i think the coma is lesser.
|
1:14 |
I don’t mind when baseball announcers discuss small sample outcomes, e.g., “he’s 5 for his last 9.” These can be disregarded at my leisure. But when the announcers go on tangents about how important these small samples are (even more important than large samples!), then it’s time to grab a new brew from the fridge. |
1:14 |
NL only LABR format, I got offered Pence for Braun, should I take it? |
1:14 |
: no
|
1:14 |
Should I just drop Ubaldo? |
1:14 |
Sometimes I get sad when I hear about the players on the waiver of really deep leagues. |
1:14 |
: yes
|
1:14 |
: (no on ubaldo)
|
1:14 |
Sans the lack of power Rizzo has been hitting well this year. Does he take the step forward with LHP and become a top option this year? |
1:15 |
: Almost everything against LHP was fine last year except for that .210 babip. (K,BB, ISO all okay)
|
1:15 |
What do you think about Schoop’s bat going forward, health permitting? |
1:16 |
: .250/18 hr? worried about K rate but it’s early.
|
1:16 |
Sell Latos for 90 cents on the dollar before that elbow inflammation setback becomes something worse? |
1:17 |
: There’s a ton of smoke here. Knee, shoulder, elbow. I overheard him saying he felt great in spring training, and they were talking about him starting season with the team, but since it’s all been bad news. I think I might.
|
1:17 |
Hey Eno, any research into how much, if at all, pitch types change going from relief to starter or vice versa? |
1:17 |
: Anecdotally, it’s easy to see that the worst pitch goes away.
|
1:17 |
If enjoying the completely opposite pitching motions but similar great results between Chris Archer and Yordano Ventura the other night is wrong, I don’t want to be right. |
1:17 |
Porcello going to breakout this year or is it more small gains |
1:17 |
: Small gains.
|
1:17 |
So if you believe in his health…is Brandon Morrow worth a roster spot in a standard 10 team league? |
1:17 |
: Yes has ten-team upside.
|
1:18 |
How was Jamaica? I went back home to Miami saw the Marlins opener, do you like Milone, Mccarthy or Straily for my 5th spot? |
1:18 |
: Straily for sure.
|
1:19 |
Drop Headley for Freese? |
1:19 |
: No
|
1:19 |
Should I be worried about Buckholtz decline in velocity and what is your overall expectations for the man |
1:19 |
: Yes and you can always expect injury with him.
|
1:19 |
Are you buying any of Jason Hammel |
1:19 |
: none of it.
|
1:20 |
Mesoraco or Castillo as an Ellis replacement in an OBP league? Should I just drop Ellis since my DL is full? |
1:20 |
: Mes and yes.
|
1:20 |
Can we just pause for a second and appreciate the awesomeness of Freddie Freeman? So far this year, in 27 at-bats (he’s also had 6 BB), he has 9 line drives, 4 fly balls classified as “fliners” in play logs (like the shot he got robbed on by Lagares last night), and 2 HR. That’s a line drive or HR in more than half of his AB’s. He’s hitting .407 and could legitimately be considered unlucky on his batted ball outcomes. |
1:20 |
Man, I love Maxamuz: speaker of Truth, expert author of captions. |
1:20 |
: I’m guessing this is maxamuz.
|
1:21 |
I believe umpire crews rotate HP–>1B–>2B–>3B throughout a series so you can project umpires that way. The Crew Chief usually starts each series at Home Plate IIRC? |
1:21 |
: yes but I think you need to wait until series begins to know which crew is where, but yes this is the way to guess.
|
1:21 |
Are you worried about Salazar / Kluber / Gray velocity declines? |
1:21 |
: A little bit less now that I’ve seen this Cleveland gun issue.
|
1:21 |
Do you tend to migrate to fly ball or ground ball pitchers? |
1:22 |
: I don’t actually care too much about them except when they in extreme parks. FB associated with Ks, so that’s good, but also HRs. I love getting Ks and GBS though.
|
1:22 |
Are you buying Roenis Elias? |
1:22 |
: not really. maybe short-term in AL-Only.
|
1:22 |
Thoughts on Avasail Garcia in a keeper lg? |
1:23 |
: Scouts always thought he had great power, and he’s in a good place to flex it, but the plate discipline is really meh. He’s ok.
|
1:23 |
Timmy “dead rat stache” is the new ERA destroyer. |
1:23 |
Any song where you can replay the first 30 seconds 8 times is an important song in Jamaica |
1:23 |
What’s the shark move in a deep saves/holds points format- drop Johnson for Henderson or Cook now? Drop Johnson and use a waiver on Brox or Lindstrom? |
1:23 |
: Johnson for Lindstrom seems like the most interesting play for me. I believe more strongly in the financials mattering in Chicago.
|
1:24 |
So when does Gausman get called? I saw a stat that said that Orioles starters minus Tillman had 60 ER in first 60 IP |
1:24 |
: Soon, I hope. We all hope. Miguel Gonzalez and Bud Norris we’re all looking at you and frowning.
|
1:24 |
Cameo has a dope cod piece |
1:24 |
A guy traded me Hunter Pence and Sean Doolittle for Carlos Martinez and Cody Allen, is he an idiot or am I? |
1:24 |
: I like your side.

1:24 |
Ok to drop Gyorko to make room for Rendon? (8 team dynasty) |
1:24 |
: in an 8 teamer? yes.

Man ankles suck |
1:25 |
Can Kolten Wong be better than the good Bonifacio? If you know what I’m saying. |
1:25 |
: In real life, probably, but in fantasy, I take Boni.
|
1:25 |
Eno, you buying on Robbie Erlin’s command? |
1:25 |
: He always had it!
|
1:26 |
Now that you’re a big shot Fox Sports writer, any chance you’ll be doing tv appearances, a la Sullivan/Cameron? |
1:26 |
: Wonder if I need to get a hair cut.
|
1:26 |
Better way to build the system – with Bats like the cubs or with arms like the mets? I feel like the cubs will be better, longer. |
1:27 |
: Yes! But! I think it’s easier to buy okay bats than it is to buy arms. Put it this way — hitters probably peak around 27, but velocity peaks the minute you get into league and then goes down every year after. So if I had a stable of arms and could run through them and trade them in final years of arb, I could see that being successful. Call it the A’s approach.
|
1:27 |
How is Jace Peterson not ranked? |
1:27 |
: you me and carson puzzler
|
1:27 |
whats your annual salary (in total from all sites) |
1:28 |
: That seems rude but I can answer generally because I know this is useful for young people who want to write: I’m probably around teacher level. Maybe not entry-level teacher, but probably a teacher. But I’m hoping the coming years embiggen that quickly. There’s okay upside if you can reach the elite crew.
|
1:28 |
Have you ever interviewed a first base slider? Any insight into why they’re allowed to do it? Punto has always seemed entertaining, but after Hamilton’s injury, it seems like managers will put an end to it unless there’s a compelling reason I can’t imagine. |
1:29 |
: I’ll ask around I guess. Seems silly.
|
1:29 |
Eno, Is this a cousin of yours? Holy wow. Melanie Ribbe is also German-Jamacian http://xaxor.com/female/mel… |
1:30 |
: Wow, I always joked with my friends that said they had to ‘marry an x’ that I’d have to marry the first German-Jamaican I found….
|
1:30 |
Please Enoculate my pitching staff from more injuries. |
1:30 |
was at phillies game last night–after braun was booed he tripled and gave the crowd a “settle down” sign. not a fan of his but it was pretty funny |
1:30 |
In a sense, Eno being on tv would be like all of us are on tv. You’re the people’s sabermetrician. |
1:30 |
: I’m no sabermetrician lol, but that was a strong interlude.
|
1:31 |
Overloaded on Hitting – Give up longoria for Pujols and Sale? Seems like a lot of risk to take on. Thank you ENO! Come back to NYC soon |
1:31 |
: In a redraft, it’s fine if you’re in a deep enough league. But in a dynasty? I think I’d pass.
|
1:31 |
I decided to forego picking up Anthony Rendon, and remain patient with Brett LAwrie at 2B in a 12 team H2H mixed. Will I be rewarded for my patience? |
1:31 |
: I still believe in Lawrie. I like his combo of contact, speed and power.
|
1:32 |
Is there any research into whether durability is a “skill”? Would such research even be possible? Even in the NBA, with much more concentrated samples, at most there only seem to be rumors about which teams are good at keeping their players healthy. |
1:32 |
: yes. Past DL stints predict future ones for both hitters and pitchers.
|
1:32 |
Safeco also has cask ipa’s too |
1:32 |
: shut up
|
1:32 |
Per Safeco: “Safeco Field’s updated menu now includes cask-conditioned ale from local brewers that will pair well with the new menu offerings” |
1:32 |
: howmygonnagettoseattle
|
1:33 |
Bryce Harper >40%K. This seems like more than small sample. |
1:33 |
: HIs swing and swSTR seemed to sugges this was possible, but we have to wait to 100 or 150 PA before we really believe. Remember how Lawrie was K’ing 35% last year? Ended up at 16 or something.
|
1:34 |
I just finished watching “Burn Notice” and started watching “Chuck” |
1:34 |
: That’s nice.
|
1:34 |
BJ Upton: 58% Swing/23.7% SwgStr Ian Demsond: 34% Swing/22.6% SwgStr …. |
1:34 |
: Small samples are horrifying.

Ruben Tejada quietly leading the mets with a .400 OBP. HA! |
1:34 |
: And booted easy plays.
|
1:34 |
You ever read any of the comments from your Yahoo articles? Ha. |
1:35 |
: Oh god the RotoWorld ones get posted over there, don’t they. I did once, and it was fine, guess I’ll head over there for some self-flagellation later.
|
1:35 |
Hi Eno, would you like some yogurt? |
1:35 |
: I would. I’m hungry.
|
1:35 |
Seems like we are all told not to panic or draw too many conclusions after two weeks, but the stories about pitchers’ diminished velocity seem to say otherwise. What’s the difference? |
1:36 |
: Velocity ‘stabilizes’ in three starts. In other words, in order to predict fuure velocity, past velocity becomes more important than league velocity after three starts. That’s not true for any other stat right now.
|
1:36 |
: In general, per-pitch numbers are way ahead of per-PA numbers.
|
1:36 |
The article on CLE pitchers velocity down AND Mason’s comment might also be related to Tyson Ross. Notice his velocity was virtually the same as his first start of the season last year. Then, in CLE it went way down. These all might be the same issue. |
1:36 |
: Thanks. Is there an article? i want to write one now.
|
1:36 |
I’m going to finally be trying Heady Topper this weekend. How excited should I be? |
1:36 |
: very. But it’s not top five for me.

“high heat isn’t going to last” – Trip Hawkins |
1:37 |
Assuming average talent distribution in an 8-team league, is a backup SS a waste of a roster spot when it can be used to stream pitchers or pick up a platoon bat? |
1:37 |
: YES!
|
1:37 |
Eno. I’m spending entirely too much time reading FanGraphs and monitoring early season closer situations instead of doing research. Come over to Stanford and sit at my laptop so I can get some stuff done. |
1:37 |
: done.
|
1:37 |
“High Heat” is the Russo show. He is terrible. It isn’t going to last. Who wants to watch a show where the first ten minutes is the host whine-shouting about inconsequential crap? |
1:37 |
: Oh right lol. It’s so bad.
|
1:37 |
In light of your Asdrubal traded comment, is Francisco Lindor worth an NA stash on a 12-team mixed redraft? |
1:37 |
: Nah, his game isn’t super fantasy ready anyway.
|
1:38 |
Mejia or or Martin Perez |
1:38 |
: mejia for me!
|
1:38 |
Do you like JP Crawford better as a deep keeper MI stash? |
1:38 |
: yes
|
1:38 |
Any guesses as to why so few black lagers are being produced in the US? Session Black is quite good, and I love Kostritzer (obviously not domestic), but beyond that the pickings are pretty slim. |
1:38 |
: Lagers are harder to make than ales?
|
1:39 |
Every time Ryan Raburn faces John Danks at the Cell at fairy gets its wings… Er, I mean I pick him up and put that dinger in the bank. Now the question, should I hold him to let him face Sale, or drop him and speculate on Gregerson or Alburqurque? |
1:39 |
: I think Raburn is churnable.
|
1:39 |
Saying ‘woof’ to express emotion was popularized by Home Alone. |

babip can’t hurt dee gordon if he’s hitting 400 foot dongers |
1:40 |
Pineda’s had solid results… him or Eovaldi? |
1:40 |
: Eovaldi because they similar in arsenal but Eo has the gas and the home park.
|
1:40 |
When will fantasy beer league standings be posted? |
1:40 |
: Very soon!
|
1:40 |
I’ve found a market inefficiency for fantasy. It’s prospects like Stephen Piscotty who get dumped in the top 100 list due to bad defense. |
1:41 |
: yeah, that’s why we debuted the top 50 “fantasy” prospects today on RG
|
1:41 |
Walker, Estrada, Richards, Skaggs…could you rank for the rest of the year please? Thanks Eno yo! |
1:42 |
: Estrada Walker Skaggs Richards? They all so diff, but Estrada has proven track record and many pitches. Walker is well-loved and in nice park. Him and Skaggs close.
|
1:42 |
I am awesome. |
1:42 |
does chris carter hit a home run this year? i really need him for about 25 |
1:43 |
: yeah that’s a problem for me too. Of course he does, but that K% means he’s always almost out of baseball. Look at Brandon Allen.
|
1:43 |
Rajai or Good Face for my “emergency speed off the bench” spot? Davis is LF/RF eligible, while Emilio is 2B/LF/CF and could get SS if I’m lucky… |
1:43 |
: Good Face because Davis is TURRIBLE against righties.
|
1:43 |
If Trumbo starts using the entire field (as the article earlier today posited) can he fit 45-50 homers? |
1:44 |
: No but I like him for 38-42.
|
1:44 |
do you think donnie murphy ever checks his ownership in fantasy leagues and gets sad because even when he starts no one picks him up |
1:44 |
i really don’t know what to think of robbie ross |
1:44 |
: No change, so FB/SL leftie in a bad park.
|
1:44 |
Do you see warning signs with Rodney? |
1:45 |
: Velocity down, but maybe back up again. Always command issues. Yes. But Farq velo down too.

Is the Astros’ closer situation still up in the air, or do you think it is now Albers’ position to lose? |
1:45 |
: What about Qualls, Fields, next guy? I think it’s open.

Who is the Homer Simpson of Baseball Players? |

Excuse me, sir, can I get a late chat lude if’n it ain’t too much of a problem for you? |
1:46 |
I’m listening to some pretty quality hold music right now. Just saying that society can get better sometimes. |
1:46 |
All announcers should be taught on day one of announcer school that “Hot and Cold are analyses of results, NOT states of being”. |
1:46 |
One sure way for me to reject your trade: include some BS comment in the offer that tries to convince me that I want a player I totally don’t. |
1:46 |
Hi hi make me an answer = WOULD YOU DROP CODY ALLEN FOR EITHER COOK OR GREGERSON WHICH ONE? |
1:47 |
: Cook?
|
1:47 |
did not think you would answer the salary question. i make zero tho |
1:47 |
: well crap, this economy sucks
|
1:47 |
my friend has a huge boner for Volquez this season. He’s not due for a serious progression correct? |
1:47 |
: Nice framer behind plate but I dunno.
|
1:48 |
Eno, What’s the deal with your hair? I just googled you and that shit is a mess |
1:48 |
: Hah. You and my wife. If I go short, though, it’s just a fro. So I’m Kenny G. So what of it.
|

For fantasy purposes, who do you like the most between Leake, Hutchison and Collmenter? |
1:49 |
: Leake.

1:49 |
: yes.

Firestone Wooky Jack is a good black lager |
1:50 |

|
1:51 |
: Damn I can’t make it to the top of the q
