Eno Sarris: If the non-performance centers around swing and strikeout metrics, I say yes. For Grandy, it’s tricky, because those were always going to be bad… but his margin for error was pretty small anyway.

I keep reading about Jason Heyward having bad luck. And honestly, I feel like I’ve been reading this for years now. Is there a point where a player is just unlucky more than others? I’m just struggling to stay optimistic with him when it’s the same excuses for him every time he struggles at the plate.

Eno Sarris: his BABIP for his career is .300 on the nose, it’s .254 now. I don’t think he’s going to ever have a great batting average, but he’s gone 27/21 and he’s stealing more this year. I think he’ll finish around .255/20/15 with the potential for a power outburst that pushes it further.

Eno Sarris: I’d actually just look for quantity at catcher too. Catcher is the pitcher of the lineup — huge bust rates, long time before they’re good. Look at Mesoraco. Pick up a post-hype guy, someone like Zunino, Conger.

Are teams too hesitant to enter rebuilding mode? The Orioles, Indians, Reds, Pirates, and Padres all seem to be guarding their chances of contention, even though none of them gets much better than 1 in 10 POFF odds, and don’t seem to have much chance of competing next year.

Eno Sarris: Dave and I had a little back and forth on this, and to some extent he convinced me that teams should go into season working on the upper ends of their possible projections, just in case it happens. And it’s a bit too early to sell, but at some point, everything not nailed down would go for me. I would have absolutely have sold Jose Reyes, for example. I realize this could say something to prospective free agents, but I think FAs just take the cash for the most part.

Eno Sarris: I think Polanco actually has a slightly higher floor, Taveras way higher ceiling. Both are top-ten talents, so they’re comparable.

Eno Sarris: He’s having the Brewer hitter disease: chasing everything. I’d adjust down to .250, but power could be anywhere from 20-25. Droppable in ten-teamers, but I’m still looking for some hope in 12-teamers.

I’m deep at 1B and weak in OF so I am trying to trade my Goldy for Giancarlo even tho I think Goldy has more to offer because of his durability and he can steal bags. I worry that Goldy won’t keep up the great numbers with his team already crumbling around him. Similarly, I worry that Giancarlo never will play 150 games… and his supporting cast is just bad. Thoughts?

Eno Sarris: Don’t worry about supporting cast in any way except R/RBI (and I don’t really actively think about those until the second or third month, definitely not when it comes to building my team, given how teams eb and flow and player change teams). It’s defensible given your situation, but I can’t help but wonder if trading your second-best 1B for a struggling OF like Bruce or something wouldn’t be a better idea.

Eno Sarris: I lean towards streaming in h2h leagues with regular 5×5 stats. I’m thinking about jumping into those pants in my 12-teamer with some issues and great pitchers on the wire.

At what point would you consider dumping a rate-killing closer who still has a seemingly firm grasp on the job? I play in a league with K/BB in addition to ERA and WHIP, so a guy like Balfour is blowing up three categories just to help in one. I get that there only a finite number of closers in the league, but the trade-off sure doesn’t seem worth it.

Eno Sarris: Especially since you can get bad rates and saves from the waiver wire. I’d explore.

Eno Sarris: Write on your own site to show that you can write often and well with clean copy and clear ideas and perhaps a niche topic, migrate to a mid-major site at some point to grow audience, try to have some great singular pieces that stand out, have a twitter presence or facebook or both, work hard after work, risk your wife leaving you (ask Matt Berry about that one, but I heard lots of groaning too), then wait until you’re getting paid a little bit and know of more opportunities you could take if you switched jobs and went full time (and probably either have savings or some idea of help if you do go full time).
