Eno Sarris: things to fill your eye pieces and ear holes until I am here shortly
12:00
Mike: Tyler White is hitting much better of late. Still a chance he sticks with the team all year, or is he a goner when Reed is ready?
12:02
Eno Sarris: The Gattis to catcher thing is interesting here. That means that White could move to DH if he can be better than Gattis, and yes he can be better than Gattis. I believe in White. Played against a righty, sat, played against a lefty… I think he’ll push his way to playing daily. They throwing the high fastball against him and he’s had to resort to his more patient ways.
12:02
Texas Dolly: It’s finally Sam Dyson time!!! Do you expect him to hold down the job for the rest of the season?
12:02
Eno Sarris: Yes. Bush is there, but Dyson’s sinker gives him such a high floor.
12:02
Greg: Your recent article has be scared about JD Martinez. In a keeper league where both have same value forever and power is heavily weighed, would you deal him for Gregory Polanco?
12:03
Eno Sarris: I’m not as worried, but I like that deal. I think Polanco will end the year over .280 with 18 homers and 25 stolen bases and that’s awesome, dude.
12:03
Jeremy: Velazquez/Mazara for Price/Hanley? 7 team keeper, I’m in contention.
12:04
Eno Sarris: Both the guys you are dealing are good, but in a seven teamer, you have to be a super star. I’m just not sure the guys you are getting are better. I’d want a third piece, like a closer or something.
12:04
Ryan: You’ve been down on Kluber lately. Who are some starters you’d try to deal him for in a keeper?
12:05
Eno Sarris: Cole Hamels, Marcus Stroman, Taijuan Walker
12:05
Erik: How about that 5-man infield from the Cubs last night! Is this the future of baseball? Also, how would you score a play made by nominally the left fielder play third base? Would a 7-3 groundout count as an outfield assist? The future is weird.
12:05
Eno Sarris: Love the future, caress the future.
12:05
Astro Boy: If Colin Moran doesn’t perform well now that he’s been called up, does Alex Bregman get promoted in his place?
12:06
Eno Sarris: He gets time until Gattis comes up, who gets time until Reed comes up, with White sticking around and potentially parrying all thrusts.
12:06
Fielders : Is my love for Joc Pederson clouding my vision of his realistic potential for this year? 25HR / 10SB / .260 BA
12:07
Eno Sarris: All but the SB look sustainable/reachable. Might not have great R/RBI if he’s going to get platooned.
12:07
Snowflake: The depth chart projections have Adam Duvall hitting 23 more dingers. So he’s projected for 30. Wut?? Who is this guy? Should I keep him on my 12 team mixed roster?
12:08
Eno Sarris: I picked up a few shares because projections *love* that cat. He’s fairly boring, but he’s in his peak and power is his game. I’ll take the over on 25 for the year, so 30 is of course reachable. BA should drop a bit. Once he fended off Schebler and became a starter as a righty, we should have seen this coming.
12:08
Beer Me: Top beer choices to try out in D.C.?
12:08
Eno Sarris: Blue Jacket, DC Brau
12:08
joey: checked the reliever leaderboards out of whimsy and whoa what the hell got into david phelps???
12:09
Eno Sarris: Was a credible starter so of course he’s a good reliever. I think Ramos righted the ship though.
12:09
Seabass: My yogurt was sour this morning.
12:09
Seabass: Another meeting of the think tank.
12:09
dbet: We are going to do a Collusion League, where everything goes next year. H2H. Nothing can go wrong…right??
12:09
Seabass: Also, don’t forget to take out the trash and wash the children
12:10
Eno Sarris: weird ludes
12:10
Andrew Potter: In fantasy baseball, should we stop drafting for steals and just stream 100% of the time against Hank Conger? Yes or yes?
12:10
Eno Sarris: That’s exhausting!
12:11
Frank: So it looks like the Astros will move Bregman to third rather than Correa, even though Correa hasn’t been good defensively at short. Would Bregman be a defensive upgrade at short?
12:11
Eno Sarris: that is a bit weird but I’m unqualified to render an opinion on Bregman’s D. I think Correa’s is underrated. And I’d be surprised if we saw Bregman this soon.
12:11
hscer: The Statcast leaderboards at baseballsavant.mlb.com need a well-struck percentage (95+ mph at 10-30 degrees) or at least average launch angle.
12:12
Eno Sarris: Yes, angle is as important as velocity. I try to use both when I work with that data. FWIW, Lowrie thinks that 95 is too hard for a ‘line drive.’
12:12
Jason from Dallas: Is Prince done?
12:12
Eno Sarris: No, most stats right there with norms, just needs to pop a few homers to help out the ISO, which takes forever to be meaningful.
12:13
Eno Sarris: taking it easy
12:13
einstein2u: your thoughts on josh hader? minor league numbers look nasty.
12:13
Eno Sarris: I don’t think he’s a reliever.
12:13
Mike: How concerned are you about Stroman? 12 team H2H, just bench for the next start or two, or do you think his last start was just a blip?
12:14
Eno Sarris: I’m all in. Has legit three different breaking balls, best sinker in game.
12:14
Eric: How concerned are you about Harvey? He was hitting 99 two starts ago, then his velo was back down against the Rockies. Is he going to be inconsistent all season, or do you think he can get straightened out?
12:16
Eno Sarris: Velo seems fine every other start. Three starts at 93 average, three at 94, two at 95.. I’m actually less concerned than Archer, obviously less than Keuchel, more concerned than deGrom and Greinke though.
12:17
Von Schloss: Do you see anything you like from Daniel Mengden?
12:17
Eno Sarris: Not giving up any runs, so that’s nice. Good command, but nothing is amazing, and there are a lot of starters in Oakland. Eh.
12:17
HomebrewJ: Latest beer in the homebrew lineup – Kolsch Calhoun
12:17
WHYAMISHOUTING?: Franco for Rendon, who wins?
12:18
Eno Sarris: Franco. I think he’ll hit more homers and the batting average won’t make up the difference.
12:18
Zach: You obviously here a lot of scouting jargon about how pitchers project as one through five in the rotation. With one’s it’s a bit more intuitive to figure out and know who good prototype examples in the majors are. It’s when I begin to move down the ladder where it gets hazy. For example, I imagine many rotations current #4 starters aren’t actually “true” fours – some are actually three’s, others five’s, etc… It would be helpful if you could give an example of a guy currently in the majors who is an ideal example of each slot. I think it would give me a great frame of reference for the future.
12:19
Eno Sarris: Was on a radio show debating if Hamels was an ace and my first question was: how many aces are there. If there are 30 because there are 30 teams, then he’s obviously an ace. I take him even with their answer (15), but that’s right up the alley of what you’re talking about. I think it’s probably better to say there are 30 aces but they’re not all each on one team. That makes the most sense to me.
12:20
Erik: Who is a bigger surprise so far, the Astros or the Phillies?
12:20
Eno Sarris: Phillies, because I thought that bullpen would be a tire fire. I always liked their rotation and thought they had some nice pieces in the lineup. Couldn’t see Odubel walking like this. Astros don’t have a good rotation really, didn’t have a good rotation really, didn’t do enough about it.
12:20
Eno! Helloooooo: Are you feeling Jon Gray at St. Louis today?
12:20
Eno Sarris: yes.
12:20
Metro: Think Manaea’s slight grip changes will make a significant difference ROS?
12:21
Eno Sarris: yeah. He got three inches more dive on the change and it made him feel good, and I think he’s a grip change away on the slider from being really good. The coaching is better in the major leagues.
12:21
Sam Dyson: Sorry I called you weird. Keeper points league, so SP is very important- but would you give up Cole for Harper? Upton and Puig aren’t doing it for me. My staff isn’t too bad.
12:22
Eno Sarris: As much as I love Cole, yes of course.
12:22
Carl: Where do you see Bautista and Encarnacion going at the end of the year? One has to stay in TOR right??
12:22
Eno Sarris: Bautista stays, Edwin walks the parrot.
12:22
Jeff: Waino had a good start last night…time to buy back in or he is donezo?
12:23
Eno Sarris: Most sinkers since he went to a more mixed sinker/4s mix three years ago. Arm angle dropping, but consistent through the game. Maybe the sinker is his newest adjustment, but I think he’s more of a matchups play than his name suggests.
12:23
Czarcasm: I listened to the podcast this morning…you kiss your mother with that mouth?
12:24
Eno Sarris: So sorry about that. My slump continues. Hanging out with ballplayers can do that, and I had just played basketball where, yeah, we curse a lot.
12:24
MB: traded conforto and conley for kluber. 12-team league, keep 8 forever. that was ok, right?
12:24
Eno Sarris: Rather have what you gave up sorry
12:24
Shawn: This is probably a dumb question, but going to my 1st beer fest in a few weeks (MicroBrew in Boston) and wondering do breweries sell bottles/cans there (aside from what’s on tap, obviously)? I’m guessing not
12:25
Eno Sarris: Mostly not because mostly the idea is that they give away the beer to charity, don’t do direct sales.
12:25
GoatRodeoCuddles: What do you think of Vince Velazquez for the next few years, will he stay ace like or will his control make him more of a #2-3?
12:25
Eno Sarris: Breaking out the change more. I see ace.
12:25
Jackie T. : Tillman’s peripherals are up across the board, can he keep this up? Similar situations with Lackey and Shark as well, just wondering if I need to sell high on these three of enjoy the ride.
12:25
Eno Sarris: I believe in Tillman the most. Had to figure out how to through rise ball and sinker, but I think he did it.
12:25
Billy Ill: So AJ Cole is frindgy at best, should the nats look to turn him into a bullpen arm? or does he have enough value to trade?
12:25
Eno Sarris: Hah would be funny if he was traded again. To us, I mean. To him, it would be just another year.
12:25
Josh: Start Duffey vs TOR tomorrow? Happ @ MIN on Saturday?
12:26
Eno Sarris: No. Sure.
12:26
Argo: Valencia’s HRs in the past week have been so eye-poppingly deep, that it’s hard to ignore. What are the odds that he really is a late stage breakout power stud?
12:26
Eno Sarris: He tells me its about the leg kick. That sort of thing has happened before, it’s a big mechanical change.
12:27
Matt: Teheran and Inciarte for Springer…Who says no?
12:27
Eno Sarris: Real life? Astros.
12:27
Josh: Any more insight on Joey Votto’s struggles?
12:29
Eno Sarris: Still struggling a little bit on inside pitch, but by launch angle and exit velo, still same guy. “Should” have a .330 BABIP
12:29
STiVo: Eno, is there a less informative source of advice for lineup construction than Yahoo’s “Matchup Rating”? You get advice based on small-sample gobbledygook like “5 stars: Batting .444 in his last 3 games against soft-tossing lefties.” Barf. This could be so useful if done right. I’m looking at you, Rotographs!
12:29
Eno Sarris: We have daily projections on the site!
12:30
Eric: Brand new Brand New song!
12:30
Steve: hey Eno, would you buy/sell on Joe Ross? Everyone jumped on the bandwagon after the hot start but now after 2 lackluster outings?
12:31
Eno Sarris: Don’t like his K-BB in those starts, but I still feel about the same as I did before: good 2/3 type until he starts to get injured like brother.
12:33
Frank: What SP can I possibly trade Heyward for? Or should I just hold? honestly I would rather have an SP or the roster spot…
12:35
Eno Sarris: He’s so weird. His swing rates are pristine. Like almost Joey Votto level. Doesn’t swing at bad pitches, makes a ton of contact, knows what he’s doing. But the quality of balls in play is just mediocre. May just hit another 10 homers and steal another 15 with a meh batting average. I’d trade that for pitchers better than Odorizzi, Chen, probably.
12:35
Matt: Kela going to give Dyson any troubles when he comes back?
12:35
Eno Sarris: no, Bush is next in line.
12:35
Frank: Modern Day Warrior IPA from Cellarmaker was maybe the best I have had from them. So freaking good.
12:35
Eno Sarris: Gonna have to go see if they’ll fill my pressurized growler.
12:36
Timber: When a catcher calls for a fastball, does he call specifically for a 2 or 4 seamer, or does the pitcher make the decision based on location of the pitch?
12:36
Eno Sarris: Good question. There usually is a universal sign for the fastball, I bet it’s on the pitcher.
12:36
forever it: What are the chances that Jeffress keeps a closer job, assuming he’s traded? Most contenders that would trade for him likely already have a closer in place, no?
12:36
Eno Sarris: Traded? Traded into setup.
12:37
Erik: Seems like every knuckleballer failed as a conventional pitcher in the low-mid minors. What percentage of pitchers who never make the majors do you think fooled around with a knuckleball for at least a month or two before deciding to retire? On the other hand, why don’t we see more pitchers drafted as knuckleballers? Wouldn’t they have an edge if they’ve been throwing the pitch since age 15 vs. those who pick it up at age 25?
12:37
Eno Sarris: 99% of pitchers have fiddled with a knuckleball. The path from the bullpen pitch to on the mound in a game is long. Tai Walker says his slider has depth in the bullpens…
12:37
Austin: Is there anything more disingenuous in baseball than the excuses GMs give to justify holding prospects down when we all know it’s the Super Two? If Jameson Taillon tossed a no-hitter today and K’d 17 in the process, I’m fairly confident Neal Huntington would say something like “we’re obviously pleased with the results, but we really want to see him work on inducing more weak contact.” It’s to a point where something has to happen in the next CBA, right?
12:38
Eno Sarris: The magical June callup period is not actually so magical when you think about it.
12:38
The Oriole Bird: How worried are you about Corbin?
12:38
Eno Sarris: Throwing a bad pitch more often. Knew that change was bad, but thought he could get by without it.
12:38
brant brown dropped the ball: what to do with jake odorizzi? is he a streamer at this point or am i holding? i have arrieta, thor, and sale // rondon, jepsen, dyson (thanks eno!) in a deep h2h. should i ditch odorizzi for a rate guy/potential closer or keep him around for extra innings when i need them?
12:39
Eno Sarris: He still doesn’t have a good breaker. I’d just keep him away from homer parks.
12:39
Jim: Any strong Mychal Givens opinions? He has great stuff but seems to give up a lot of hits. What’s his ultimate role?
12:40
Eno Sarris: Deception guy but one with a good fastball. I like him.
12:40
Ralph: What do you think about shortening MLB games to 7 innings?
12:40
Eno Sarris: do. not. like.
12:41
Tom: Thoughts on Clevinger’s debut?
12:42
Eno Sarris: Not a ton of horizontal movement, so he’s going to have to do it on command and strikeouts. Like, don’t love.
12:42
Fielders : better stash for the FBL playoffs .. Trea Turner or Dee Gordon?
12:42
Eno Sarris: Dee?
12:42
Matt: Everyone talks about Teheran and Inciarte as trade targets from the Braves…Isn’t Vizcaino the guy they should trade? What type of return could he command?
12:42
Eno Sarris: that’s the problem, he doesn’t get the same return. Not with his injury history.
12:42
NatsFan: After facing Syndergarrd two nights ago, the Nationals had Colon last night. The Nats announcers pointed out how slow 90 must look after facing 100, and that makes some sense based on my long-ago baseball experience, but do hitters or pitchers have any real difference in expected outcome based on the previous pitcher? Would it make any sense to try to follow a junkballer with a high heat guy or vice versa?
12:43
Eno Sarris: There’s evidence of this but only in-game and only established with regards to the knuckleball.
12:43
Spaceman Spiff: Would KPU-BB% be a good way to plumb a batters floor?
12:44
Eno Sarris: yeah that’s not bad. The guys that make it despite a bad number there just hit the snot out of the ball and are precious jewels that aren’t really ones you should seek out since they ‘hit’ so regularly.
12:44
Bart: Do you agree with Mike Podhorzer that Yordano Ventura is a sell low and would it be reasonable to sell him for McCullers or Gausman?
12:44
Eno Sarris: Yes and yes. Nothing going right.
12:45
Josh: Re: your concern with Grichuk; even though his GB rate is up, it hasn’t been at the expense of his FB rate. LD is not very highly correlated, so wouldn’t we expect those increased liners to eat away from those grounders? The improved plate discipline and hard hit rate are also encouraging, no?
12:46
Eno Sarris: With PU down too, perhaps. We have to wait longer to know about FB rate, but it looks the same as usual. What if he can only be who he was last year with the same plate discipline?
12:46
Cato: Yasiel Puig, I have him as a $1 keeper forever, 6×6 with obp and slg. Someone I should hold onto or try to move during a hot streak?
12:46
Eno Sarris: I still believe in him as a .280/20/10 guy but god is he fraying my nerves.
12:46
The Hamburgler: Pomeranz – are you buying or selling? Someone is offering me him and I’m intrigued but don’t know if i want to take on the risk?
12:46
Eno Sarris: Same thing as Rich Hill but younger, better fastball maybe.
12:47
J: Why the dislike of Kluber – is this concern this year and if so what are you expecting is a normal FIP moving forward?
12:48
Eno Sarris: Bad fastball guy who lost another tick off his fastball. He’s 30. He might be fine this year, but this is the time to sell him if you’re out of it in a dynasty. Or this year at least.
12:48
Bobby: Hey Eno! Speaking of Kluber, would you trade away him and Fowler for Bautista and TWalker in a Roto OBP? Trying to get some more HRs. Thanks!!!
12:48
Eno Sarris: Yup!
12:49
Yoenis: Is there any hope left for Caminero? Ya boi looks reaaaaaal bad out there this year.
12:49
Eno Sarris: No command, not throwing the splitter enough, perhaps because of counts, only velocity and nothing else. Sigh.
12:50
Josh: If and when Cishek loses the closer gig, who would you expect to take over? Benoit? Vincent?
12:50
Eno Sarris: WHERES ZYCH
12:51
Gabriel: Where is the love for Xander? Do you think he actualizes his power potential this year? Does he finish the year as the #3 SS?
12:52
Eno Sarris: He can get there on runs and rbi and some steals and a few homers, but he’s still hitting the ball (Hard) into the ground. Needs to get some launch angle in there.
12:52
Toby: Over/under 2.5 more Nick Castellanos articles you write this year
12:52
Eno Sarris: Under!
12:52
Poopy McPoopyface: Has your early season concern about Bumgarner faded now?
12:53
Eno Sarris: Yeah, velocity getting better, batters swinging at curve again, maybe the foot is better.
12:53
Joe, Esq.: Ohio just passed a 12%+ ABV law (awaiting governor’s signature). Get ready for those 12%+ Bourbon Barrel Jackie O’s stouts! NOMNOMNOMNOM
12:54
Eno Sarris: sweet. everyone likes cake!
12:54
ScoKo: Been close to pull the trigger on a few deals for a 2b, which has been a problem for me all year. I have Travis very close. Does he solve my problem? Not really sure what to think of him.
12:54
Eno Sarris: Wait. hitting for just enough power in the minors right now to think that maybe his shoulder is koay.
12:55
Jung-Ho Kang’s Knowing Stare: I’m back, baby! And I’m still looking at you, Eno!
12:56
Eno Sarris: *locks eyes for an uncomfortably long time*
12:56
Erik: Will postmodern defensive alignments break certain defensive metrics?
12:56
Eno Sarris: Good thing there are new ones on the horizon.
12:56
Bubba: Getting desperate with both Pineda and Ventura on my team. Can I drop one of them for Bauer or Duffey?
12:57
Eno Sarris: Sell Ventura in a two for one with the worst staff in your league where you get a tiny tiny upgrade somewhere. leave Pineda on your bench. I don’t love Duffey so Bauer for one of them is the only thing I’d consider.
12:57
Laura: Is Nola top 20 for the rest of the year? Assuming inning limits don’t come into play.
12:57
Eno Sarris: My love for him knows few bounds.
12:58
guest: Reyes Twofer: What happens to Jose Reyes—where does he wind up?—and will we see Alex Reyes in the majors this season?
12:59
Eno Sarris: I’m not sure we see Alex. You’re waiting for a Jaime injury, really, and if it’s a short term one, you get one of their fungible guys. Feel like Jose gets traded before the suspension is up.
12:59
Eno Sarris: a request
12:59
Jim: Fantasy baseball trade proposal I received. Jared Eickhoff and Brandon Drury for Sam Dyson and Kyle Hendricks. I’d be receiving Eickhoff / Drury. Thanks!
12:59
Eno Sarris: I like Eickhoff but I don’t like that deal.
1:00
Eno!: Me and the wife are vacationing through New England in a few weeks. I wanted to do one brewery, and based on the variety of high ranked beers on beergraphs, I picked Allagash. But now looking at their site, they are very Belgian with a strong Brett influence… will we (you know, the wife) be disappointed?
1:00
Eno Sarris: They have good sours even if you don’t love Brett beers normally. If I picked one brewery, I would have probably done Tree House in MA. You could pivot to Maine Brewery pretty easily, though, and they have awesome IPAs.
1:00
Zorn: Who plays in 7 teamers?
1:00
Eno Sarris: Maybe super deep lineups? Family leagues, sometimes there’s not enough family.
1:00
Gary Bertier: is Pineda ever going to figure it out? Want to drop him to stream good pitching matchups…
1:01
Eno Sarris: The cutter has changed shape and he can’t command it. I can say that but I don’t know how long it takes to command again.
1:01
JP Penny: Eno, don’t you know anything, Tolleson was only taking a break from pitching and is obviously still the closer even though they’re saying it’s Dyson GOD DO SOME RESEARCH YOU CLOWN
1:02
Eno Sarris: yeah and I was replying to a question about a ‘vulture save’ which, you know what that is, didn’t figure I had to explain it in my limited space and time here oh god what am I doing
1:02
Zorn: Thoughts on McCullers this season and beyond?
1:02
Eno Sarris: Still love.
1:02
Bart: I’m trying to be patient with Finnegan but how long should I wait before I consider dropping him?
1:03
Eno Sarris: Not much longer. The guys that we like in the 70-90 range are actually longshots. He’s not showing the swinging strikes or command that he’d shown in small stints, so he’s droppable. Unless you in deep/keeper leagues, then he’s still worth waiting around for a bit.
1:03
Eno Sarris: Still good lefty velocity.
1:04
Marichal: The Phils called up Tommy Joseph and he’s looked good so far. Any chance he becomes the primary 1B soon, or will he be stuck with the short end of a Ryan Howard platoon?
1:04
Eno Sarris: Still a right hander and Howard not quite dead yet. Maybe by end of year.
1:05
Jafo: Read your xbabip art yesterday. Should we keeper owners really be looking to move Hosmer? He’s just starting to enter his prime and it looks like he’s finally tapping into his power too. Please elaborate.
1:06
Eno Sarris: I just don’t buy that any *more* power is coming with a 60% ground ball rate. My research suggests that power prime is actually 26. So this would be selling him at his peak, IMO.
1:06
JeevesAsksYou: Wait a sec there are two Rougned Odor’s in the Rangers organization and they both play 2nd base?? What are the odds?
1:07
Eno Sarris: BROTHERS! I did hear Desmond asking him what his mom calls him and he admitted that he’s Roberto (middle name) to his mother, and that his father (also Rougned Odor) is the real Rougie in the family.
1:07
Joe: Sweetwater Artisanal: most underrated brewery on the East Coast. You know it to be true, Eno.
1:07
Eno Sarris: I’ll take that Gose, but leave a lot of the IPAs.
1:07
Dock Ellis: how dumb am I for drinking coffee beers before bed time? i never really thought about this, but does a lot of the caffeine stay in the brew?
1:08
Eno Sarris: See, I don’t drink coffee and I swear I feel it. But brewers tell me they use the beans without ‘brewing them’ so it’s just like washing beans in beer. Minimal caffeine. But I wouldn’t drink decaf before bed either.
1:08
Jorge: Valencia + Davis = Orange Khrush. Can these guys be the A’s big boppers all season?
1:09
Eno Sarris: Hah! Why not. This is what Beane is doing. Build an 81-win team, evaluate in August if you’re on pace for 90 because something worked out better than you thought, and then trade future value for present if you’re in one of those years.
1:09
WCPPPPP: Thinking about a Maine trip centered around breweries. Good idea, or best idea?
1:09
Eno Sarris: Don’t forget Bissell Brothers!
1:09
Zombie: Is Brett Lawrie worth the start at 3B in a 12 H2H OBP/SLG or should I go out and try to trade from a high-tier 3B? Not much in FA
1:10
Eno Sarris: Sure. walk rate says that OBP will be okay as BA falls.
1:10
Oaklander: I was offered Sonny Gray for my Jesse Hahn. What say you?
1:10
Eno Sarris: I like Hahn and I’d take that.
1:11
KD: Still feel good about Domingo?
1:12
Eno Sarris: Sure. I think you’ll look up and see a .250ish average and 24 homers and 5 steals at the end of the year, with a good OBP, at the top of a lineup. I wish he hit more fly balls, but at 23, he’s going to improve in that department for a few years at least.
1:12
Blanche Tetherweather: Finally, a chatter room full of males. Is Hector Neris manly enough to take over the closer role by say, my next “time of month”?
1:12
Eno Sarris: I know for a fact that it’s at least not 100% male.
1:13
Eno Sarris: Which… what can I do about that anyway. I think Neris has the skills to close and *should* take over, but I care not for his demeanor or genitals.
1:14
Eno Sarris:
1:14
ljc: What’s the deal with Carlos Gomez?
1:14
Eno Sarris: Hurt. Maybe the Mets knew something.
1:15
Josh: Now that Dyson has taken over, who are some of the top closer stashes?
1:16
Eno Sarris: It’s pretty barren. Neris is number one. Then there’s a gap. Then it’s… Ohlendorf? Cingrani? Yuck. Bush? Zych?
1:16
Eno Sarris: Boxberger!
1:16
Eno Sarris: he’s number one, but probably gone. This is a weird year for saves.
1:17
Ampersand: Beer question: Hitting Boston for a three-day trip first week of June. Any tips for while I’m there?
1:17
Eno Sarris: Trillium for take homes, drink at Row 34 and have some oysters next door. Mead Hall in Cambridge. If you can travel a bit, Night Shift is a must.
1:18
Trainman: How confident are you in Darvish return from TJ surgery?
1:18
Eno Sarris: 85%
1:18
Bill: Is Doolittle back? Recent numbers look straight out of 2014.
1:18
Eno Sarris: Yeah. I suppose he’s a stash if Madson gets hurt, but Madson looking pretty good too.
1:18
Smoo: So are you buying on Valencia? Or selling?
1:19
Eno Sarris: Holding. I think he’s a .280/20 guy at heart still.
1:20
George Costanza: Looking to move out of NYC within a year. Want a place that has similar walk a lot vibe with a fun bar scene/stuff to do/not freezing cold. What are some places I should check out?
1:21
Eno Sarris: SF pretty expensive, but at least somewhat similar and not at all cold if you’re fine with 60 and gray. I really liked Seattle but it’s decently cold and very wet. San Diego downtown not really same thing. Chicago super sweet but freezing cold. I guess Seattle? Uptown Oakland super cheap and there’s a decent craft beer thing going on. A little less walkable/trainable.
1:22
Pie: Re: Gattis, he came back up the same time as Moran did
1:22
Eno Sarris: So let’s watch how much he catches. I’m not that into Moran. Meh power, meh contact, meh patience, meh D.
1:22
Dizzy Trout: Is Steven Vogt going to get better or be just this all year? Ugh.
1:23
Eno Sarris: Slightly better than this, which is maybe slightly better than you think it is right now.
1:23
Gorky: Gregerson gonna be okay, or time to speculate?
1:25
Eno Sarris: He’s definitely one of the weaker closers. I guess right now it’s Will Harris who’s the handcuff. Another low velocity guy. Mike Fast wrote the seminal piece on the value of velocity and his team has gathered all the low-velocity guys.
1:25
Jeff: Am I wrong in percieving FanGraphs as owner friendly?
1:25
Eno Sarris: Front office, perhaps, but not so much in my writing.
1:26
Marcus: You were down on Shark going into the season, what about now? Still like him more than Smyly?
1:27
Eno Sarris: Wait, what? I had Smyly ahead. I might have been wrong about the shark, though. I thought it was the cutter’s fault, but he was adamant it wasn’t when we talked, and the velocity loss has been way less than I thought it was.
1:27
Dizzy Trout: Good time to sell high on Rajai and Napoli, or hold? The higher K rate and lower walk rate for Napoli in particular scares me
1:27
Eno Sarris: Sell.
1:27
Joe: Karns is starting to pop out as a leader in some of the underlying peripherals. What types of leagues should he be owned/pitched?
1:27
Eno Sarris: 15+ for sure. I think 12+ too but I’ve always liked him and the change has improved.
1:28
Trainman: If the Astros continue to struggle, do you see them shaking up the front office? The Gomez and Giles trades have turned out to be colossal mistakes to this date. I know they have brought up a lot of prospects but the trades to me have been a major reason why they have struggled. Velasquez and Santana would have the Astros in a much better position.
1:28
Eno Sarris: Last year bought them some time.
1:28
RP: My Correa for Rosenthal and Ziegler.
1:28
Eno Sarris: no.
1:28
Christian: if you could go to one brewery in Seattle, which one would it be? Can you rank Eovaldi, Eickoff, De La Rosa, Karns and Corbin? Thanks!
1:28
Eno Sarris: Cloudburst. Primo location, much upside on the beers. Eo Karns Eick Rubby
1:28
Al: You said on the pod that you were making less money than you used to. What did you do before this?
1:29
Eno Sarris: The amazing thing is I edited children’s books.
1:29
Ekka: Whats the likelihood Burgerbox is closer by year’s end?
1:29
Eno Sarris: 80%
1:30
Wooooooooo!!!!!!: Can you give a brief breakdown on Conley. Why is it you like him? Do you think he is worth a pickup in ottoneu 5×5?
1:31
Eno Sarris: Yes. Good velocity for a lefty, and chance for even a bit more. Great change. Improving slider, spin rates on all pitches. Great results so far, which chance he can improve WHIP.
1:31
OddBall Herrera: Post-hype first base battle royale, Smoak vs. Myers, who do you like?
1:31
Eno Sarris: Myers x 10000
1:31
Quirks: Any idea on the timeframe of when Odor’s appeal will be heard? In a league with a weekly deadline for lineups, it would be handy to get a heads up.
1:31
Eno Sarris: Guessing Friday announcement.
1:32
Eno Sarris:
1:32
Mark: What the hell should I do with Shelby Miller?
1:32
Eno Sarris: Drop
1:32
Swinging Friar: What’s your favorite offering from Modern Times?
1:32
Eno Sarris: hmmmmmmm Booming Rollers? Big citra taste. Blazing World pretty amazing too.
1:32
Chris: the brewers already said they want a ken giles like offer for jeffress..
1:33
Eno Sarris: Recency bias says teams say no.
1:33
Taveras’ Ghost: A guy in my league figured out my fangraphs chat name and know he can see all my questions so i need a new name. SUCK IT MIKE! Taveras’ ghost out!
1:33
Key-Kay Hernandez, okay?: If Clayton Kershaw had his current body but baby-sized hands, what would his pitching repertoire look like?
1:33
Will:
1:34
Eno Sarris: Damn we didn’t do our business with the ludes but at least we got this one in.
1:34
Eno Sarris: Please don’t whine about not getting your question answered. It just makes me feel bad about the 90% of questions I can’t get to.
1:34
Eno Sarris: It doesn’t do anything else!
1:34
Gabe: Dat givens K rate tho
1:35
Eno Sarris: Is delightful. If you take away his arm slot, though, his movement is meh. But it’s weird!
1:35
Jim Longborg: So Brock Holt is having his annual midsummer slump quite early this year. Will 2015 turn out to be the best year of his career, and by what margin?
1:35
Eno Sarris: Buttledge is taking his old role, and his new role could easily be taken by a trade incomer or a HOT PROSPECT I WON”T SAY HIS NAME
1:36
Dan: 7 Innings? Is that a thing?
1:36
Eno Sarris: I’d never heard it before.
1:36
dbet: What is your solution to MLB games being “too long”?
1:36
Eno Sarris: Beer.
1:36
Ryan: Re: Corbin, he’s actually abandoned the changeup for the most part in May. And he has pitched better since then, but still not great.
1:38
Eno Sarris: good catch. five starts ago, and since then… well there’s still that 7 run game against STL. You know, other than that game, he’s been okay, and 13 SO against three BB in last three starts is okay.
1:38
Trainman: Eno I’m going on a honeymoon to Hawaii next week, not sure if you have ever been, what’s a good beer out there?
1:38
Eno Sarris: Best beer for me comes from the Big Island Brewhaus. They have multiple good beers. Maui is second.
1:38
Gabe: It’s a prechewed food rude dude lude!
1:38
Argo: Lude Merloni
1:38
Argo: Lude Obbs
1:39
Eno Sarris: Oh well done.
1:39
Dan: Degrom strike out rate is way down. Do you attribute this to velocity? Any signs of a rebound in velocity or K/9 ?
1:39
Eno Sarris: Mostly, yes. There was some hope for his velocity with four starts in a row with improving velocity, and then it al dropped in the last one. HIs command gives him a soft landing, but I want to see more gas.
1:40
Joe: Apparently, you start with the infield and build out, who knew? (Braves new ballpark):
1:40
Tommy: Jp Crawford has more walks than strikeouts. With the Phillies playing so well any chance we could see him by the all star break?
1:42
Eno Sarris: Maybe in June. Triple-A soon, and they’ll watch their record I guess.
1:42
Big Joe Montferrant: Is Altuve going to go 20-40 HR-SB? Seems like a pretty sure bet at this point. Second question, when is he going to be considered an Elite player? He’s been awesome for 3 years now
1:42
Eno Sarris: Top three fantasy player this year. Might be number one. Not kidding.
1:42
Grant: Peter O’Brien – is this just a service time thing? Feel like he can come up and immediately be a Mark Trumbo-esque dude for the dbacks, which they, um, need. Right?
1:43
Eno Sarris: You’d have to play a bad defender in center to play him, a bad defender, on the corner outfield.
1:43
Dan: Do you trust this Marcel Ozuna breakout?
1:43
Eno Sarris: Called for it, even.
1:43
CJC: If Rubby De La Rossa can get healthy, has he turned a corner?
1:43
Eno Sarris: Terrible command. This is the best he’ll be.
1:43
E5: Do you have the game on?
1:44
Eno Sarris: DEXHR
1:44
Gurgle Gurgle : That moment on the couch when there’s a bubbling noise and you look at your fiancee and then she looks at you and then you both look at the dog and then the dog stands up full of shame and leaves the room revealing the shart that will leave your couch forever unclean…seriously people, WHAT GETS RID OF SHART STAINS? I’m afraid only fire…
1:45
rustydude: Eno, love your advice. Have enjoyed success with it several times, most recently with Dyson. However, I did swap out Fielder for Pierce against your warning last week. You think Pierce can be given enough PA’s to be viable as an active hitter in an AL only league?
1:46
Eno Sarris: Huh. Pearce has been playing pretty regularly the last few weeks. I thought he’d be a v LPH platoon guy. His projections compare favorably to Fielder’s too. I would probably want another guy to play on days where Pearce sits, but hey, good one.
1:46
Astronaut Jones: So JBJ is going to do the same thing as last year right? Explode and then fall apart…. Right???
1:46
Eno Sarris: New strikeout rate is interesting. BABIP and ISO going to fade, though.
1:46
E5: I know, I know. Domingo Santana is young, but all the wiffs. Yikes.
1:47
Eno Sarris: Is true. But that team, of all teams, will give him so many chances. More of a dynasty/keeper/deep hold, but still an interesting young bat.
1:47
War2d2: ENO! What are your feelings on replay? Olney was tweet-storming about it last week, and I asked Zim about it a couple days ago. Are you in the “get it right no matter how long it takes to review” camp? Or are you in favor of a time limit on replays?
1:47
Eno Sarris: You know…. it does take some steam out of the game. I might like fewer replays.
1:48
Poopaluder: I exclusively read your chat transcripts when I’m pooping, Eno. That way the good shit is comin’ in while the bad shit is goin’ out.
1:49
Eno Sarris: Do you know that this is where I started? I used to print out chats and head to the pooper at Kumon Publishing, and then write at night when I got home. Hope my old boss doesn’t see this. Who am I kidding? He knew. He saw me head to the printer and return a half hour later. I blamed it on poop problems.
1:49
German is Weird: Anything more than coincidence to the fact that the German word “Gewurze,” which means herbs/spices, is so close to the word “Gefurze,” which is the past tense of fart?
1:49
Eno Sarris: Well
1:50
CH: Rodenbach = good?
1:50
Eno Sarris: Mellow. but good entry point.
1:50
tom: favorite beer in Seattle?
1:50
Eno Sarris: Was actually a dry cider with rose hips. Forget who did it.
1:50
Rusty: Going to Bend, OR in a couple months. Obviously need to hit up Deschutes. What else should I def have on my docket?
1:50
Eno Sarris: Boneyard and Crux.
1:51
The other Kyle: I have asked 4-5 questions the last 4 chats and have not had a single one answered…can you at least acknowledge that they’re coming through?
1:51
Eno Sarris: Yes. I’m now 50 minutes behind.
1:51
Topiary: Any thoughts on The Alchemists Focal Banger?
1:52
Eno Sarris: Want!
1:52
Frank: Rank please: Future Urias, future Giolito, future Glasnow, future Reyes, future Taillon, future Snell and future Berrios. Thanks as always best writer out there
1:52
Eno Sarris: Future Snell Future Gio Future Glasnow Future Urias
1:52
Matt: How is Orpheus Brewing so good, yet soooo far under the radar in ATL? I know Sweetwater’s brand is peaking, but c’mon…
1:53
Eno Sarris: In my Atlanta chapter in the book, Orpheus is listed as the best brewery to visit while in town for the Braves!
1:53
Wardo: re: New England breweries – Foundation is literally right across the street from Allagash, so you can always pop over there if Allagash doesn’t do it for you
Next time you’re in Berlin…: I will meet you there!
1:53
Mute Chatter: What is you methodology in selecting which chats will be read and answered? I submitted two within the first 5 minutes and got nothing and Erik has 3 or 4 messages that have been read and responded to. Done whining…thanks!
1:53
Eno Sarris: I start at the beginning, and probably answer 20% of those, and then scroll through and drop to 10% and then I get frustrated at the end and give up. Chat!
1:54
shubbles: Over/under: my stringy or my dinghy?
1:54
Eno Sarris: Good god give me the dinghy.
1:54
Snowflake: Wingling one finger is the sign for 2 seamer
1:54
Eno Sarris: There you go.
1:55
Eno Sarris: oh man I have to go!
1:55
Mucho Maas: RE: Closer stashes. You’re not into Giles any longer, or think he won’t get the call?
1:55
Eno Sarris: Sorta into him but seems behind Will still.
1:55
kim: beergraphs needs a weekly chat like this one
1:55
Eno Sarris: We try to do one on Fridays but it’s not as real time.
1:55
Joe: They’ve already stated Box is the closer when he returns
1:55
Eno Sarris: That’s what I heard. And then there’s what happens after.
1:56
Thiago Splitchange: Have you had Maine Lunch, and is it worth store-hopping over a lunch break to find? Just hit Rochester, NY today
1:56
Eno Sarris: Yes v good.
1:56
Pretentious BeastHound: Is Maikel Franco a good buy low target, or are we seeing what you believe he will do?
1:56
Eno Sarris: More power and BA coming.
1:56
Snarfle: Somewhere out there, there’s someone who walks out of his dwelling and laughs at a mountain every day. I don’t know this person, just law of averages, they have to be out there.
1:57
mike sixel: We just moved to Portland looking for that scene, unfortunately, we are in teh burbs the first year……but Portland is like Seattle, but smaller and drier…..
1:57
Maxamuz: It must frustrate people when they see my name pop up since I seldom seem to ask any relevant baseball question. I mean, outside of Lucas Duda crushing 50 home runs.
1:57
CW: You touching Gomez in a keeper? I traded him away at the beginning of the year before the ship sank, and wondering if I can get him back for pennies (like 2 pennies to be exact). What should I give up for him?
1:57
Eno Sarris: nope
1:58
Miketron: What do you do with Teheran?
1:58
Eno Sarris: Trade.
1:58
Eno Sarris: I mean, he’s fine, but only fine.
1:58
MS: Would you trade Arrieta for Trout in a keep forever league
1:58
Eno Sarris: yes
1:58
Offended Lefty: Earlier you mentioned “good velocity for a lefty” re: Conley. Do righties naturally throw harder? Are lefties at an inherent disadvantage? Can you explain what (if anything) you meant by that?
1:59
Eno Sarris: It’s just observed that lefty starters average a mph less than righties. I think it has to do with populations. Fewer lefties out there.
1:59
Clay: I OWN ALL OF THE DUMPSTER FIRES: DEE, PRINCE, HEYWARD, KLUBER
1:59
Eno Sarris: I wouldn’t go so far on Kluber or Dee.
1:59
Rick: Pick up Adam Conley, James Shields, or Danny Duffy?
1:59
Eno Sarris: Conley don’t don’t don’t don’t Duffy
2:00
Dan: Now we can all read on our iphones while we poop…. it’s a more civilized time
2:00
Eno Sarris: Truth.
2:00
Snowflake: How do you handle obnoxious shit talkers in hoops? Got in a fight with a team full of them last game. Not happy with myself about it. But also can’t imagine being the kind of person to continuously taunt the other team up by 20
2:00
Eno Sarris: Fix this by having a regular game of mild mannered adults. I’m the weirdo but not trash talking, just weird.
2:00
Eno Sarris: (Usually yelling at myself).
2:01
brad: wait you like snell’s futute over urias?
2:01
Eno Sarris: 94 from a lefty would be first or second best in bigs.
2:01
Scooper: Eno can I touch the butt?????????
2:01
Eno Sarris: yes. but you have to buy me a beer.
2:02
Eno Sarris: Okay now’s the time to do actual work, I guess. Thanks for hanging out!
