Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 6/23/16
1:19 |
: was going to use their song about subways because it was cool to be in the New York subway again last week but this song’s video is just too weird to not post
12:01 |
: Hello, friend!
12:01 |
: Hello!
12:01 |
: Hey Eno– what do you think of keuchel ROS? can he return to last season form? Being offered finnegan and duffy for him and not sure what to do…
12:02 |
: Don’t love Duffy but Finnegan’s velocity is down and the change has ifffy movement. Duffy is interesting but has so many injuries in the past. Doesn’t move the needle for me.
12:02 |
: you lika da moss?
12:02 |
: I lika da moss.
12:02 |
: Talk to me about E-Rod. Went back to his old mechanics last night and sat just over 95 mph…..but threw 80% fastballs and ZERO breaking balls! Can he succeed like this? Is it safe to assume he wasn’t comfortable throwing the breaking stuff with the new (but old) mechanics yet?
12:03 |
: He’ll always remain interesting to me, but is fringe for mixed leagues until he shows more.
12:03 |
: Is Bauer the new Carrasco?
12:03 |
: Found his command, coaxing more swings on the curve, not crazy comp, but Carrasco more raw stuff.
12:03 |
: Profar or Baez OBP dynasty
12:04 |
: Profar. Baez won’t ever have a good OBP. Not convinced he’ll ever steal 20.
12:05 |
: I got nine working digits and one last day being 36. Be kind!
12:05 |
: Eno – can we talk about Stephen Vogt? What’s going on with him? Numbers are down across the board. He’s playing a good amount by DHing on his non-catching days and he’s been hitting 3rd in the lineup, but he’s not hitting for power and not contributing much in R/RBI. On the latest pod you guys said he’s had negative value to date. Would you drop him for Beef Castillo’s in Coors this weekend?
12:06 |
: I think he’ll finish at .265/14 or so, basically what he did last year, walk some more going forward. That describes like the middle third of catchers, so he’s fungible in mixed leagues.
12:06 |
: warning: reverse platoon split question. Adam Duvall?
12:06 |
: Reverse platoon splits take forever to be stable, and righties see more righties in the minors, so it’s not even that uncommon at first. He’ll stabilize I think.
12:07 |
: Just traded villar for McCutchen…tell me nice things and give me natalie portman’s phone number too if it’s not too much trouble. Thanks eno
12:07 |
: You should win that trade! But not by as much as it first seems. I’ll text Natalie.
12:07 |
: if you are ever having a bad day, just remember you weren’t Michael Taylor yesterday
12:07 |
: truth.
12:08 |
: What’s going on with Aaron Nola? Can’t get out of the 4th inning in his past 3 starts. Injury, or just a young pitcher having his first slump?
12:09 |
http://www.brooksbaseball.net/outcome.php?player=605400&b_hand=-1&gFilt=&pFilt=FA|SI|FC|CU|SL|CS|KN|CH|FS|SB&time=month&minmax=ci&var=swing&s_type=2&startDate=03/30/2007&endDate=06/23/2016 He’s going to have to coax them to swing. I still really like him.
: They stopped swinging! |
12:10 |
: Do you think McCullers will get his walks under control?
12:11 |
: He can’t command the change, the curve is hard to command at that level of sexiness, so he’ll always struggle with this and have high WHIPS I think. Still love him. How many guys can K that many?
12:11 |
: Happy birthday a day early! Best closer in waiting to hang on to Oh or Gearrin ?
12:11 |
: Oh. I know Gearrin is next but he doesn’t strike me as a closer based on velo and Ks. I think their next closer comes in a trade.
12:12 |
: How good is Jung-ho Kang?
12:12 |
: Very! 25+ homers possible.
12:12 |
: Eno…I’m heading to Seattle in a couple weeks and wanted to know if there are any must-try beers. Thanks!
12:13 |
: Holy Mountain is the must-go spot. Cloudburst is fun and right off Pike’s Place, that market with the fish-throwing.
12:13 |
: Has Cutch begun a terminal decline? He seems way older than his 29 years.
12:13 |
: The K rate is not fun. He already stopped stealing bases. Sometimes he plays through injury, I think.
12:13 |
: How can the Astros catch the Rangers? Arlington isn’t this good, but they have a lot of wins in the bank…
12:14 |
: White hot fire month?
12:14 |
: With Abraham Almonte set to return, in what leagues would you have any interest?
12:14 |
: None? Seems to have lost his job to Naquin/Rajai.
12:14 |
: Would the A’s trade Gray to the ‘Stros?
12:15 |
: They will trade a pitcher to anyone, and they have a link there.
12:15 |
: which finger’s broke?
12:15 |
: Frigging index on the right.
12:16 |
: but not broken, just sprained, I hope.
12:16 |
: Eickhoff against Minnesota? Are you in or out?
12:16 |
: In like Gin.
12:16 |
: What is the beer of choice when you have one working ankle and you have one week left being 39?
12:17 |
: Something strong. A Russian Imperial Stout? Old Rasputin for the old one-legger?
12:17 |
: Now that we’ve seen a couple of MLB games from Contreras, what do you think? Is he up to stay?
12:17 |
: Not convinced. He’s got the worst defense of the trio, and even John Lackey was talking about how the young guy ‘will be better back there.’
12:18 |
: 6/24/1979
12:18 |
: The magical day when, after twelve hours of labor, the Jamaican midwife screamed “it’s a breach” and my mother got into the cab to go to the hospital an hour away.
12:19 |
: Bauer or Maeda ROS?
12:19 |
: Still Maeda. He’s got the easier league, and hasn’t been terrible.
12:19 |
: Lance McCullers is Fascinating to watch pitch. Yesterday he had an inning where he walked 2 guys on 4 pitches and struck out 2 guys on 3 pitches. In some ways, guys like him are more fun to watch than the Kershaw’s. Because perfection can get boring.
12:19 |
: It’s a roller coaster!
12:20 |
: Scale of 1-10 (10 being losing the role) how tenuous is Rosenthal’s hold on the Cards closer position?
12:20 |
: 4ish? Still lots of velocity and Ks.
12:21 |
: What do you think of Justin Upton going forward? Has he turned it around that I can trust him in a 10 team H2H points league?
12:21 |
: He’s about to have his Big Month.
12:21 |
: Just finished “The Only Rule Is It Has to Work” and I’ve read the usual suspects….give me a title to track down
12:21 |
: Big Data Baseball?
12:21 |
: Where do you rank Evan gattis at the C position?
12:21 |
: Top five.
12:21 |
: Is this “new” Shoemaker sustainable? Or will he go back to being the old, hittable, and ultimately dropable Shoemaker?
12:22 |
: He’s certainly trying something different with half his pitches being splitters. it could work.
12:22 |
: Other Mets trade ideas:
12:22 |
: Buy Gourriel.
12:22 |
: I know about ISO, but is there a name for the difference between a player’s OBP and AVG? I find that when I look at a triple slash line, that’s the first thing I notice.
12:22 |
: Walk rate?
12:22 |
: Who besides Oakland has the major league players, however fringy, to trade for prospects?
12:23 |
: If Ross can show he’s healthy, or someone wants Cashner as a reliever or a back end starter, San Diego has a piece or two.
12:23 |
: Whatever happened to Kakie Bryan?
12:23 |
: Flamed out. Literally. Tragic lighter/fart situation.
12:23 |
: Are you buying the recent success from Wacha?
12:24 |
: I was sure he was hurt, but all the markers for injury calmed down. Maybe he was hurt for a bit, and isn’t. I love that changeup. Like an NL Jarrod Parker.
12:24 |
: Favourite whale (non-beluga category)?
12:24 |
: Orca? That’s a whale, right?
12:24 |
: Do you buy that Cole Hamels is about to crash and burn due to his peripherals?
12:25 |
: No. That homer rate will calm down. he told me he looked at his 14 homers and 7 of them were on good pitches, the batter just got lucky a bit. He gives up homers but not like this.
12:25 |
: Loved your Paxton article. Do you think he will sustain his recent success
12:25 |
: I do, but I’m a little bit nervous about what happens when Felix Hernandez comes back.
12:25 |
: Is this simply peak Desmond with serious regression coming or has he figured out something new or is it less stress from the position switch?
12:26 |
: Nice home park, new approach at plate with regard to outside breaking balls. Still, not sure he’s going to age real well.
12:26 |
: Jon Gray has a “heavy arm.” Should I run away? Or sprint?
12:26 |
: Like, one is heavier than the other? Sounds like dead arm, or its less scary cousin. He’s hard to use anyway.
12:26 |
: How idiotic are the Mets for leaving Nimmo in the minors while they are the 27th worst offense in baseball the last 30 days with the 30th worst LF situation since May 1…?
12:27 |
: Not convinced he’s totally ready.
12:27 |
: Is there anything in his underlying numbers that suggest the Michael Pineda may drive down his HR rate (even a little bit)
12:27 |
: He tweaked his release point recently. Should be a little better going forward. I think he’s a mixed leaguer still.
12:27 |
: most WAR for an NL shortstop in last 14 days, go
12:27 |
: Danny Espinosa? Really? He’s okay.
12:28 |
: What’s wrong with W. Chen? I thought he’d be better this year moving to the NL.
12:28 |
: The pop-ups are gone! Where did they go? I think they’ll come back, but they’re gone and he needs them.
12:28 |
: Get any fun beers for Father’s Day?
12:29 |
: Came back from New York with Singlecut, Barrier, Other Half, Threes, and Grimm, soooooo yes.
12:29 |
: Could you recommend a lower calorie craft beer?
12:29 |
: Firestone Walker Easy Jack.
12:29 |
: How good is Hyun-Soo Kim? Is there 15-HR power in there to go with the nice AVG and OBP?
12:29 |
: 10-12.
12:29 |
: Ok Eno, there is one guy in Croatia who watches baseball. And plays fantasy (who would thought)?
12:30 |
: Get some craft beer and you can be the ambassador or Enoistan.
12:30 |
: Is there any hope for Chris Archer?
12:30 |
: He’s still getting the whiffs, so yes.
12:30 |
: who is Nick Tepesch and where did he come from?
12:30 |
: Rangers. Good sinker. otherwise…
12:30 |
: Future Correa: Demi-God or Lord of the Universe?
12:30 |
: Lord.
12:31 |
: Trade: Im in desperate need of SP. My Donaldson & Shoemaker for his Beltre & Jose Fernandez. That’s a little too steep right?
12:31 |
: In a redraft, it’s okay. There’s always the chance Jose goes down I guess. But Beltre is nice. Can always try to wait a second or ask for a sweetener since he’s hurt.
12:31 |
: Besides having an annoying name to type, Jeff Samardzija is annoying pitcher to follow. His outings seem to have a lot of variance week to week.
12:32 |
: Probably command. It comes and goes with him.
12:32 |
: Is Trevor Bauer good now (different pitch mix, more 2 seamers) or is this a SSS mirage?
12:32 |
: He’s throwing that front door sinker more now. I think that’s a big deal. Also commanding it all around more.
12:32 |
: Daniel Mengden a solid streamer in 12+ teamer or can he be more than that?
12:33 |
: Half a pitcher right now. Need to see more before I play him on the road. Good velo and three pitches, though. Worried his delivery won’t work out of the stretch.
12:33 |
: Picked him up today. Interested to see where he ends up. I’m good with starter or reliever! Quality arm is a quality arm
12:33 |
: Could easily close.
12:33 | : |
12:33 |
: Did I just drink one of the best beers ever?
12:34 |
: It’s amazing. Also, a merkin is a fake patch of hair that prostitutes put on to cover up the fact that they shaved to avoid lice so there’s that.
12:34 |
: Is there anything to explain Johnny Cueto’s brief stretch of being awful for KC last year? Seems like he’s back to being one of the best pitchers in baseball again.
12:34 |
: Lots of moving parts in the delivery. Might happen again.
12:34 |
: I’ve got Aaron Sanchez, Pomeranz, Duffy, Paxton, Tillman (among others) and just picked up Bauer in a 10 team redraft. Rank them please? Which one or two would you try to trade (either alone or as a package)?
12:35 |
: I’d try to package Pomeranz and Duffy. Great when in, and I usually don’t like to think too much about injury with pitchers because it hurts my brain and heart, but those guys…
12:36 |
: Do players that reach the majors younger also peak younger?
12:36 |
: This seems possible, and might explain some of the new aging curves, which show that players peak earlier recently. Debut age and average age going down. Not sure exactly why this is, but let me try something out:
12:38 |
: baseball is 1/2 athleticism and 1/2 learned skill. We know sprinters peak super early, so athleticism might peak earlier than 25/26 even. If you debut earlier, you learn skills earlier, peak earlier, and then it’s all just losing athleticism, i.e. ‘getting older.’
12:38 |
: Is ISO the very first stat you look at from Minor Leaguers for future success?
12:38 |
: Actually I often look at that plus K% in tandem.
12:38 |
: While there is talk Raisel Iglesias may get some closing opportunities, is he good enough against lefty handed swingers to succeed in that role if given a chance ?
12:38 |
: Change is fine.
12:38 |
: Who do you think is closing in Oakland post-deadline?
12:39 |
: Doolittle and Madson. Both signed long term to decent deals and relievers are rumored to be traded more often than they are because the returns are light. Usually. Then there’s Kimbrel.
12:39 |
: basketball injury?
12:39 |
: Yeah someone reached in, though to be fair it was a bit of a 50/50 ball, or “death incarnate.”
12:40 |
: Pomeranz going to be allowed to pitch the whole year?
12:40 |
: Allowed but won’t.
12:40 |
: give us the juicy whiffleball scouting reports please
12:40 |
: Dave Cameron: Big Bat, pegs baserunners.
12:40 |
: Dave Appelman: Clutch defense
12:40 |
: Paul Kastava: Big Bat, trader
12:41 |
: Jeff Sullivan: Brings heat, wind rattles him
12:41 |
: Brad Johnson: Good movement, poor command
12:41 |
: (on pitches. couldn’t move a lick on the ground due to grade 2 hammy strain)
12:42 |
: Craig Edwards: Over the top, good pitcher face
12:42 |
: Orlando Arcia has a defensive skill set similar to that of both Andrelton Simmons and Francisco Lindor, but which offensive path is he more likely to follow?
12:42 |
: Simmons for me. Although not a great comp, given different K%.
12:42 |
: How good is Julio Teheran?
12:42 |
: One of the rare true number twos.
12:43 |
: What percentage of people think your name is Enos Harris when you introduce yourself?
12:43 |
: 22.5%
12:43 |
: I typically dont find beer enjoyable. The only one that I can tolerate seems to be Yuenling or a german Hofbrau. Any recommendations?
12:44 |
: Try that Easy Jack, or Pinkus Ur-pils, or Firestone Walker Pivo Pils. Victory Prima PIls.
12:44 |
: a couple weeks ago you responded to and chatsourced a question about my 2 month old sleeping in bed with us. an update: last night I slept in the guest room while he slept with my wife. so I’m not winning that one right now. but I did get a delicious bomber of oude geuze boon from my wife to celebrate fathers day, so at least I got that going for me.
12:44 |
: Hahahaha parenting is so frigging hard.
12:44 |
: How much, if any, is the difference in value for a Teheran trade now vs. at the deadline?
12:44 |
: Should be worth a little more now! In-season, but you get more starts than just Aug/Sep.
12:44 |
: Ben Revere or Rajai Davis?
12:44 |
: Rajai
12:45 |
: Yesterday Dave was saying that it looks like Addison Russell is probably not going to live up to the expectations placed on him. I tend to agree–he looks overmatched on anything over 92MPH. You were a huge backer–are you still in on him?
12:46 |
: I always thought his floor was real high, and a .250/.330/.400 shortstop with above average defense, to plus, is still really nice. Will he do more? I see enough hope in his previous adjustments, but he does need to be a little more selective, IMO.
12:46 |
: You were breech? Must of been awful, with that huge head of hair and everything.
12:46 |
: Wasn’t actually a breach. She just said that because she wanted to get off the clock.
12:47 |
: How would a fan with no traditional baseball knowledge, only sabermetric, find out stuff everyone takes for granted? Born and raised in a country with no baseball.
12:47 |
: Watch MLBNetwork? As bad as guys like Harold Reynolds can be, the players break down a lot of the stuff that gives you insight into how baseball is played on the field.
12:48 |
: What # you going in tonight’s NBA draft? Will the finger injury hurt your stock?
12:48 |
: Queue the sad shot of me in the green room on the phone.
12:48 |
: Eno, what suggestions can I pass along to James Shields to get right?
12:49 |
: Retire that one pitch, which one, oh yeah, the meatball.
12:49 |
: I read “Big Data Baseball” — it was my favorite 🙂
12:49 |
: Yah that one was awesome. Any suggestions for the Kid?
12:50 |
: Need another jam for open mic, bitte
12:50 |
:
12:51 |
: What do you think is max kepler’s true talent slash line?
12:51 |
: .255/.330/.430
12:51 |
: Should pitchers with one excellent offspeed pitch throw and an otherwise unremarkable repertoire throw that pitch as often as most pitchers throw their fastballs? Or does that lead to injury or a loss of effectiveness?
12:53 |
: You can’t always just throw a pitch more often if it’s good because there’s the lack of surprise / change of speeds. Pitchers are actually decent at finding that equilibrium on their own, though Shoemaker’s gambit is interesting in this regard. Some of the risk of a cutter is that it’s a slider that people throw over and over again and that affects fastball velocity negatively. So the answer? Yes.
12:53 |
: Orca is actually a dolphin.
12:53 |
: Damn. Okay. Beluga.
12:53 |
: No I okay thanks for support guys will be back in action soon!! God bless!!!
12:53 |
: Phew. No more fart flames though.
12:53 |
: How bad is your hat hair?
12:54 |
: it’s amazing. Like I take the hat off and I’ve still got it on.
12:54 |
: Do you think Raisel is in the pen for good?
12:54 |
: Shoulders suck. He might be. It’s sad. He was one in Cuba, though.
12:54 |
: If you had a chance to sit down with your biggest hero and they ordered 2 of the obviously worst beers in the world, would they remain your hero? I’m talking miller lite level of nazzty
12:55 |
: Eh, most ballplayers like bad beer. There’s Corey Knebel and Adam Lind and then everyone else.
12:55 |
: rather be paying Tulo 4/78 or Zim 3/50 going forward?
12:55 |
: Zim. Still stinging the ball.
12:55 |
: Can Michael Fulmer become a #1 or #2 starter, or is he a back-end of the rotation guy just having a couple good months?
12:55 |
: He’s got all the stuff. Injury the only question.
12:55 |
: Are you supporting Bumgarner’s push to participate in the derby? Do you think mlb should do a pitchers-only mini showcase, or should bum hit with the big boys?
12:56 |
: He’s not pushing hard. The media keeps asking him, so he answers questions. Probably not a great idea.
12:56 |
: you gonna try and cop that Cascade and Rare Barrel collab?
12:56 |
: So hard for me to get the time to wait in line to get special beers like this.
12:57 |
: I have two catchers, not sure which one to drop. Weiters or Gattis? seems like its a choice of power or avg but both seem to be giving me the same kind of production. advice?
12:57 |
: I like what Wieters is doing overall.
12:57 |
: It never seems to be the right time. Like blindly turning left, pulling out into traffic. Think your safe then BAM your dream woman walks into your dust trail.
12:57 |
: Dooduh, stop with the Nimmo love affair. He is not that good
12:57 |
: Eno I’m getting “office fat” and decided to cut out beer for a little while. Life is a cavalcade of miseries
12:57 |
: ludes, ludes, where are the ludes?
12:57 |
: We finally got one. Barely!
12:58 |
: My husband and I are going to Phoenix and Vegas. Any beer/brewery recommendations at either location or on the way?
12:58 |
: Vegas is tough. Phoenix, if you can get out there, Arizona Wilderness is the best. But if you want to uber around closer to downtown, you can do Fate and Papago in Scottsdale, and that’s the best one-two punch they’ve got. Walkable between them too.
12:58 |
: Singlecut provided the beers for my wedding and they get all the heart eye emojis
12:58 |
: Really excited for that crowler.
12:59 |
: So Harper is having problems with the outside pitch. Will he make the adjustment?
12:59 |
: His whole swing is set up to hit that. I think he’ll be fine.
12:59 |
: Tall grass Brewing’s half pipe ale may be one of my new favorite beers. Hoppy tart (slightly) sour ale. Not too much hops, not too sour
12:59 |
: Really loveing hoppy sours. Fresh and bright and easy in the summer.
1:00 |
: Re:Bauer, someone had pointed out that he has literally abandoned his slider and revived his cutter instead, at least according to pitch f/X.
1:00 |
: Probably just a tweak to one pitch.
1:01 |
: Hi Eno. Thoughts on Leonys? I was offered him in a very deep redraft league for Taillon.
1:01 |
: Love him. Would take that deal. Changed his swing. Gonna hit 15-18 and steal 20+ this year.
1:01 |
: Founders is now distributing to Maryland… I bought a pack of Redankulous which was fairly awesome… have you had any of their other stuff?
1:02 |
: They’re okay. Solid. The main part of the line is a little less amazing. Their mosaic pale is good, All Day was one of the OG sessions, but it’s been passed by.
1:02 |
: Do you think Gourriel can start this year?
1:02 |
: The elder can.
1:02 |
: U peep what Edwin Diaz been up to in seattle? Str8 fire
1:02 |
: They don’t even miss Zych.
1:02 |
: 49.5 lb suitcase coming home from NYC too?
1:03 |
: No, traders didn’t live up. 43.5 coming home.
1:03 |
: to be fair, I think I took more cans home and more bottles to NYC.
1:03 |
: Ive got a heavy arm cuz one is mad swole from all the curlz I do bro!
1:03 |
: Say my name.
1:03 |
: Ryan Howard’s OBP is .199 and he is 10 for his last 101.
1:03 |
: weird.
1:03 |
: Have ludes, will send nudes
1:03 |
: no
1:03 |
: Have there been many pitchers who were able to consistently outpitch their FIP/xFIP? Or are we gonna start seeing some major regression in Teheran era-wise?
1:04 |
: Tommy Glavine is the meister. Other pop-up guys like Chris Young. Wrote a piece about Teheran. I think he’ll be fine for three years at least, with ERAs better than FIPs most years
1:04 |
: Cellarmaker Double Dobis bottle release on 6/28
1:04 |
: they good
1:04 |
: Could travel ball(youth “elite” teams) lead to the early peaking?
1:05 |
: More injuries at least.
1:05 |
: Should and will the Yankees be sellers at the trade deadline?
1:05 |
: Yes and yes.
1:05 |
: and Cameron also a dead-dead-DEAD pull hitter I hear…
1:05 |
: Well, we all were. One ball went right of second, and it was Appelman if I remember right. Or August (switch hitter!) or Sullivan.
1:05 |
: Playing basketball, are you Eno “elbows of death” on defense?
1:05 |
: Actually you probably get my elbow a little more on offense.
1:06 |
: Open-faced sandwiches have rebranded to toast. Working the surprise factor for now, but is it sustainable?
1:06 |
: Only till we find something more artisanal to call them.
1:06 |
: Doing the full PNW. Have a good idea of where to go in Oregon and Seattle, any intel on worthwhile beer spots in Vancouver?
1:06 |
: Seattle, scroll up. Oregon have to go to Bend. Crux is a highlight. Boneyard.
1:07 |
: Your aging curve theory is fascinating. Would it be testable with something like BB% as a proxy for skill and SB as a proxy for athleticism? There are probably too many variables to look at that in a simple study, I guess.
1:07 |
: I think we’d need times to first or 40 times. Which… we’re pretty close to getting. We just need to wait ten years to age them lol.
1:07 |
: where can i see how a player’s WAR has lined up with his salary for the year? is there a way to see that Player X has underperformed his contract by X%?
1:07 |
: Look at the ‘value’ section on the player page.
1:07 |
: Kind of new to the beer world. I enjoy Shock Top and Blue Moon. What’s the next step?
1:09 |
: You like Wits, but there are wit pale ales like Gumballhead (Victory) could see if you like to cross over. I would try some Saisons (Saison Dupont) and see if you like all Belgians (try Allegash White). You might even like sours (expensive, but Almanac is around for $11 or so a 12-oz).
1:09 |
: no one is named Enos anymore. that name got “slaughtered”
1:10 |
: The most underrated player creates real lakes. This player co-invented refrigeration. This player is an amphibious mammal that eats trees. That’s right, the most underrated player is the beaver.
1:10 |
: Eno Sarris: 2016 Dizzy Bat Champion
1:10 |
: Now we’re rolling.
1:10 |
: 36 and quick enough to play D in a league? Well done Eno!
1:10 |
: And yet when I watch myself play sports I’m like oh naw is that me, no way what
1:10 |
: I desperately need speed, and it seems the call-ups are the only source now. Is Alcantara worth grabbing now, or would waiting for Manuel Margot be a better option? Thanks!
1:10 |
: Margot.
1:10 |
: What do the people in these chats do for a living? Genuinely curious. I work as a research assistant for a non-profit and am on my lunch break.
1:11 |
: This is why we schedule them when we do. There were a few professors, one guy that was always in class, don’t know what everyone else is doing.
1:11 |
: Do you want a tuna sandwich, we have an extra
1:11 |
: Hope you’re not in tight space.
1:12 |
: Are boring players with above average but not elite defense, a bit of power, a bit of speed, and a decent amount of walks a market inefficiency or just underappreciated by fans? What would an “all-boring team” look like?
1:12 |
: Alex Gordon is the patron saint?
1:13 |
: Justin Turner? Danny Espinosa? Juan Uribe? Joe Panik?
1:14 |
: How does Jeff Spellcheck look ROS? Just moved Suarez and Kendrys for him in a 16 teamer.
1:14 |
: Good trade.
1:14 |
: If he hasn’t read it yet, The Extra %2 by Jonah Keri is my favorite baseball book
1:14 |
: I enjoyed A Terrible Beauty
1:15 |
: What do you think a prime Tim Anderson season looks like? He can really hit the ball on a line.
1:15 |
: Hate the discipline though.
1:15 |
: Potential SB source in T. Jankowski if SD moves an OF?
1:15 |
: Yup, he can fly.
1:16 |
: What Grimm did you get? Their Subliminal Message was AMAZING.
1:16 |
: Future Perfect.
1:16 |
: Will there be another FG meetup in NYC before next year? So bummed I couldn’t make it :/ My friend Nick from PitcherList was telling me how awesome it was.
1:16 |
: Enjoyed meeting him. We’ll see, but I doubt it.
1:16 |
: Applying pitch framing metrics described in BDB, can fantasy owners predict breakouts for pitchers based on a rough estimate of how many innings we can reasonably expect a strong framing catcher to spend behind the plate for them?
1:17 |
: I’d only look at moves on the extreme. Like AJ Pierzynski to Tyler Flowers, I think that was pretty extreme.
1:17 |
: saw Herbie do this live in New York once, was awesome.
1:17 |
: Jerry Dipato has acquired Wade Leblanc 3 times in the last 3 years. Is there a secret that we don’t know about?
1:17 |
: Throws with left hand?
1:17 |
: not a secret though.
1:17 |
: Going to DC next weekend for a few days. Which breweries are musts? I’m assuming DC Brau?
1:17 |
: heard good things about Blue Jacket.
1:18 |
: He said not beluga. Anyway, the answer is sperm whale. They literally eat giant squid for breakfast. And presumably lunch and dinner.
1:18 |
: Beluga all I got because I have to sing that damn song.
1:18 |
: For Michelle — In Vegas, go to Tacos & Beer. Great tap and bottle lists, with local and national stuff. Tacos are legit, too. Easy cab/uber ride from the Strip.
1:18 |
: Highlights from New England vacation/beer tour… while I tried to hit many of the “big” names from beergraphs, Alchemist, Lawson’s, and Farmstead distribution is SO limited… not even in southern Vermont. While Allagash was super cool (and way into Brets) our best experiences were with small brewers, like Northshire in Bennington VT and Cape Cod in Hyannis, MA
1:18 |
: Do you take your chances with Pineda vs. MIN or Kazmir at PIT this weekend? Kazmir has been so frustrating lately.
1:18 |
: Yes and yes.
1:18 |
: i was looking at archie bradley’s changeup effectiveness stats on FGs and there are three stats all labelled “changeup runs above average” … one is the same as last year (-.2), one is better (-.72 vs -1.05), and the last is worse (-1.3 vs -1.0). can you explain whats going on to me? i’m confused (i read a 538 article saying his changeup was top 5 in improvement over last year but the FGs stuff seems to tell a different story). thanks.
1:19 |
: Those values are just about results. The 538 piece was about movement. Results based on what happened just when that pitch was put in play or strike/ball… those are a little problematic because we don’t know what pitch came before.
1:19 |
: Are my owners justified in moving on from me in twelve team mixed leagues?
1:20 |
: I’m getting this feeling from Eovaldi and him that their fastballs are just too hittable and straight, and even hiding their fastballs only makes them usable instead of featured starters.
1:20 |
: I slept in the guest room to make room for a baby and four years later I’m still in the guest room…
1:20 |
: At least you can sleep at night.
1:20 |
Local beer brewing company, Sweetwater Brewery, is out tens of thousands of beers after two trailers were stolen from their facility in NW Atlanta early Tuesday morning. The brewery said the trailers were later found separated; one on Camp Creek Parkway, and the other on Southwoods Parkway. Both trailers were found empty of a total of 78,000 beer bottles. The varieties that were taken were: 420, IPA, Goin Coastal IPA and Take Two Pils. |
1:20 |
: HEIST
1:20 |
: probably the Bandit.
1:20 |
: Thanks for chatting, Eno. Apologies if you’ve addressed this previously, but a few months back you offhandedly stated in a chat that “…even the best pitchers miss their spots by 10 inches in 3-0 counts!” I have no reason to doubt you — but where’d you get that info? Thanks again!
1:21 |
: Catcher F/x. Lindbergh has done a few pieces on it. It’s not listed on any leaderboard.
1:21 |
: Matt Cain made a living outpitching his FIP/xFIP for years
1:21 |
: He was a good comp for Teheran. But the end is also always nigh, it’s a tightrope for those guys.
1:22 |
: Eno do the dizzy bat!!
1:22 |
![]() |
1:22 |
: guess that didn’t work. haha
1:22 |
: Let the record show I finally put a shirt on
1:22 |
: damn
1:22 |
: open faced sandwiches are tartines
1:22 |
: In communist Eno chat, chat ludes you.
1:23 |
: did you use a five man infield?
1:23 |
: either that or a really short five man outfield. All on the pull side. with the small bat it was 2-0 after four. finished 14-13 after going to big bat.
1:23 |
: Leonys Martin is owned in only 29% of ‘Yahoo’ leagues. Where do you think his ownership should be?
1:23 |
: 60%
1:23 |
: im an intelligence analyst working to stop counterfeiting and this is my lunchbreak too
1:23 |
: I’m a video editor. Sit on a computer all day, have my own office, can read whatever I want but can’t really watch videos or listen to podcasts, so chats are awesome.
1:23 |
: To answer the occupation question, I doubt I’m the only one who works in the schools and is therefore off for summer!
1:24 |
: What exactly do you guys do at these FG meet ups?
1:24 |
: Talk! and drink. But not everyone drinks. Everyone… well not everyone talks either.
1:24 |
: Gumballhead (Victory)? C’mon Eno, don’t short Three Floyds like that
1:24 |
: Crap. My bad.
1:24 |
: Eno, just wanted to say thanks for the recommendations for Portland OR breweries. All were great. And as a guy who doesnt enjoy sours, have to say Cascade was unreal.
1:24 |
: I’m a geologist, but I’m at a desk a lot more often than I’d like.
1:24 |
: Your take on pliney the younger?
1:25 |
: Good not great. Hopslam is about the same.
1:25 |
: Okay I have to talk to my accountant in five and find some paperwork so see you guys next week!!!
1:25 |
: Im sitting at my tits table eating chicken.
1:25 |
: I’m a financial analyst and work while in these chats. Excel is my jam.
1:25 |
: later guys!
1:26 |
: and gals!
With a phone full of pictures of pitchers' fingers, strange beers, and his two toddler sons, Eno Sarris can be found at the ballpark or a brewery most days. Read him here, writing about the A's or Giants at The Athletic, or about beer at October. Follow him on Twitter @enosarris if you can handle the sandwiches and inanity.
