Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 6/6/13
8:46 |
: Will be here in 14!
|
9:01 |
Sunny, sunny, sunny whether |
9:01 |
: Also, if I leave or disappear abruptly, I’m sorry. David Walker from Firestone Walker is supposed to call me about the BeerGraphs meetup tomorrow, and, well, yeah.
|
9:01 |
Camped out for your chat trying to get in early bfore lineups lock. I feel like I’m waiting in line over night at K-Mart for tickets to see the Rolling Stones – yeah, I’m that old! Anyway… Pick 2 of the following streamers with the best ERA/WHIP |
9:02 |
: You are first. So you get an answer! It’s like getting tickets in the front row! or something. I like Pettite and Phelps. Hughes scares me a bit. Like he’s looking for something.
|
9:02 |
Gorgeous Peter Bourjos, expectations for him ROS? Can you also please tell him to actually try and steal once and awhile, since he is so fast. He also has pretty eyes. |
9:03 |
: lolfawn. Well, the problem is that he’s had leg issues. So I doubt he steals much more than 25 or so, and most of those later in the year.
|
9:03 |
I’ve been offered Dexter Fowler for my Gio in ottoneu 5×5. I need power and he has Dom Brown. Should I try to turn Gio into Brown, or just take Fowler? Or neither? |
9:04 |
|
9:04 |
Observation: 9 of the 30 opening day closers have gotten hurt or lost their jobs through underperformance in 2013….which is pretty par for the course. Saves suck |
9:04 |
: Is true. Most are through injury this year, though.
|
9:04 |
I somehow have managed to acquire Altuve, Profar, *and* Rendon in a keeper league. I don’t have enough spots to play them all — who should I try to move? |
9:05 |
: You might need all three at the end of the year. Might sit on em. Cause Altuve or Profar will get the most back, but if you end up looking for a 2b later that would be silly.
|
9:05 |
Who do you like ROS, Aybar or Didi? Yunel, Crawford also available. |
9:05 |
|
9:05 |
When do you start targeting guys coming out of the draft in a dynasty league? Also, do you plan on watching the draft? |
9:06 |
: I probably won’t watch the draft. BeerGraphs drops tomorrow. And I probably won’t pick up many of the draftees because I’m impatient and want guys that are closer. I might take a college guy in the top ten. He’s the closest. Guys like Gray and Appel might only need a year or so before they are up.
|
9:06 |
someone offered me ryan braun for joe mauer. i have posey and need some hitting. i took it figuring that any suspension would be several months away. good idea? |
9:06 |
: You know, Mauer could go down with injury too. I actually like this one. And yes, appeals should give you mcuh of the season in a roto league.
|
9:06 |
Jayson Werth or Daniel Nava ROS? |
9:06 |
|
9:06 |
So I was pondering my 2-7 H2H team that would be in 4th if it were Roto in my “friends in real life” league, and I thought about a cool league format I’d like to see offered. Has anybody ever done a daily h2h league? Where you face a different team each day? I’ve had too many weeks this season where my 2.15 ERA is bested by a 2.10 ERA, or I lose homers 15-14. In real life baseball you’d never win or lose based on a whole week’s worth of performance, right? I think a daily H2H league (points league maybe?) would be a cool and fun way to play, and feel closer to being a real life manager/GM. Or at the very least easier to dig yourself out of a hole in early June. |
9:07 |
: I like this. It’s a bit like daily fantasy, but a little different. I’ve been thinking of finding a new way to make fantasy work. Also: how do we get more trades.
|
9:07 |
Is Adam Lind back in the circle of trust? Even startable against lefties? Is rizzo startable against lefties? |
9:07 |
: He told me that he’s comfortable in the platoon, so don’t worry about that. And he’s swinging at 90%, which I like to hear. I like him. Rizzo an always start for me.
|
9:07 |
Hold onto Skaggs or drop him for someone like Jacob Turner, Dillon Gee, or Dan Straily? (redraft league) |
9:08 |
|
9:08 |
man bear PWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEG |
9:08 |
You’re a funny guy Eno. I like you. That’s why I’m going to kill you last. |
9:08 |
Is chocolate milk a PED? I mean… compared to plain milk, water, or most sports drinks, It has double the carbohydrate and protein content, perfect for replenishing tired muscles. Its high water content replaces fluids lost as sweat, preventing dehydration. Plus it packs a nutritional bonus of calcium, and includes just a little sodium and sugar — additives that help recovering athletes retain water and regain energy. |
9:08 |
: I laughed at that interlude.
|
9:08 |
People keep trying to fleece me out of Hisashi Iwakuma in a ten teamer. Why would someone assume that I would have Iwakuma and not realize what he’s been doing? If I wasn’t aware, why would I have rostered him? |
9:09 |
|
9:09 |
Chase Headley worth hanging on to at this point? Or drop him for more pitching… can never have enough in my league (I have Longoria) |
9:09 |
: Yes. He’s actually very good at baseball.
|
9:09 |
Any possible guys you see stealing the closer role soon? |
9:10 |
: I used to like AJ Ramos in Florida but wow. Brothers has a slight chance of holding the role. Capps in Seattle has to be on radars with Wilhelmsen’s down K%. Ambriz if Veras goes down, but nobody cares.
|
9:10 |
Who poses the bigger threat to the Braves – the Nationals or Phillies? |
9:10 |
|
9:10 |
What’s up with Matt Moore’s fastball? Concern? |
9:10 |
: It’s down. Happens. It’s his control that’s the worrisome thing.
|
9:11 |
Is Pestano worth holding on to in a 14 team league for at least a couple more weeks? |
9:11 |
: Yes. Shoulders suck.
|
9:11 |
Scoresheet rest of season, Corey Hart or Anthony Rizzo at 1B? |
9:11 |
|
9:11 |
How much more exciting would the MLB Draft be if teams could trade their draft picks? |
9:11 |
: Or if the announcers didn’t drool over *every single* pick.
|
9:11 |
: THIS GUY HAS ACE UPSIDE.
|
9:11 |
Will Beer Graphs have actual graphs? |
9:11 |
: Yes! And leaderboards!
|
9:12 |
When Beachy comes back, are you starting him right away? Or holding off to see what happens? |
9:12 |
: If it’s a bad matchup, maybe I wait. But it is the NL, and he’ll have done a long rehab. Most likely will start him.
|
9:12 |
Have Kemp at CF. Should I offer Pedroia (Who I have at IF, since Cano is at 2B) for Adam Jones? Would have to roll with Neil Walker at my IF spot. |
9:12 |
: Given Pedroia’s thumb injury, I think this is fine.
|
9:12 |
Oh hello Eno. Do you like Dan Straily? Not as a person, but as a fantasy baseball pitching commodity of course. Would you prefer Kevin Gausman? |
9:13 |
: I can’t wait to interview him. Have heard some really interesting things. Problem for me is his fastball. As a keeper, I want Gausman. This year? Straily seems pretty polished and you can start him at home.
|
9:13 |
any thoughts on lackey? and ROS pls rank J. Fernandez, lackey, parker, straily, chatwood, kluber. thx! |
9:13 |
: Fernandez (but IP), Lackey, Straily/Parker.
|
9:13 |
: Although Lackey/Straily/Parker is *almost* a pickem.
|
9:14 |
I hate when people say, well so and so would have been a Hall of Famer without the roids. Why do we think we can pinpoint the exact date someone started using? |
9:14 |
: I think for Bonds, I’m saying, he’s so awesome he could be 25% less awesome and still be a Hall of Famer. And I doubt roids do much more than 25% for you.
|
9:14 |
Is the NL East really this lopsided? |
9:14 |
: Nat should make it closer. But I called it!
|
9:14 |
Sweet I am finally here in time for one of these! |
9:15 |
: I haven’t even made it to noon on the questions…
|
9:15 |
How would you arrange a 2-man bench in a H2H league with SV and Holds? I can’t decide if it’s worth it to hold on to Wheeler (or an extra RP), or have more flexibility with an extra hitter to cover off days of starters |
9:15 |
: All pitching. You just get more out of that then 6-8 extra PA.
|
9:15 |
Just traded for Braun and am working on getting Nelson Cruz. Come on MLBPA! |
9:16 |
: I think the MLBPA is fuerte. I bet they skate. I mean, it’s one dude, talking. Even paper work is like, sure, whatever, that’s some paper.
|
9:16 |
day games! eno chat! and dinner tonight at a brewpub! it’s a good Thursday. I’m looking at a tap list with a bunch of stuff from Lavery and Southern Tier, as well as Neshaminy Creek Tribute Triple. any recommendations of those options? |
9:16 |
: I think, even in summer, you have to try the mokah and javah stouts from Southern Tier.
|
9:16 |
Also, someone recommended Flower Power IPA from Ithaca Beer Co. and was wondering if you had tried it? |
9:16 |
: Loved it.
|
9:17 |
Trying to cash in on the Puig madness. What 2b should I aim for to be an upgrade over Jose Altuve? I know, I know, shoot for the stars, yada yada. Who would reasonable at this point? |
9:17 |
: Sounds like a reasonable offer actually. Not too much star power with Altuve.
|
9:17 |
Was listening to the TINSTAAP podcast from BP with Sporer and Thorburg and Thorburg mentioned that the drag line from the back foot is pretty telling for a pitcher’s command and whether or not the fastball is being overthrown and over rotated. In your article, Cain’s back foot looks a little further left in ’13 than ’12. Could this explain the drop in Edge%? |
9:17 |
: Very possible.
|
9:17 |
Any chance of a Beergraphs meetup in NYC during the allstar rreak? |
9:18 |
: Good idea but someone needs to send me to NYC during the allstar break. More likely is NYC in September. Of course, NYC baseball won’t matter then. #zing #selfzing
|
9:18 |
Looking at the updated catching tiers, should I drop M. Montero for either Lucroy or Castro in an OBP league? |
9:18 |
: None of them is a lock for anything more than .260/10 RoS. I gues Lucroy has shown better batting averages. Could be okay.
|
9:19 |
What is to stop Ernesto Frieri from eventually succumbing to Marmolitis (the BB rate catching up too far to the K rate)? If this does happen is Coello the guy now? |
9:19 |
: Coello will never close for the Angels. (oh boy, now he will). I just don’t see Mike trusting a forklenucklething.
|
9:19 |
Ommegang partnered with Game of Thrones to brew their first beer, the Iron Throne blond ale. Have it yet? |
9:19 |
: No, and frankly that last episode has left me nauseous.
|
9:20 |
Eno, in my AL keeper league I am in 4th place. Could use some offense but don’t know if I can win the title (maybe second or third). I could trade Wil Myers and Dylan Bundy for Miguel Cabrera. Don’t know if I want to give up my future for the uncertainty of reaching first. What would you do? |
9:20 |
: I’m assuming Miggie Cabs is unkeepable? because if he’s keepable, giddyap.
|
9:20 |
Are the Braves really going to move Medlen to the bullpen? I mean, he is leading all starters in ERA over the past calendar year. It’s not like his previous bullpen experience was late in game experience either. Sigh. Tim Hudson should be the one that gets moved, but I imagine he has armor because of “leadership” |
9:21 |
: One thing about Medlen is that he’s kind of relying on great control, and doesnt have it now. meh fastball velocity, and is the changeup so great that he can ride it into the sunset?
|
9:21 |
Will I win the HR Derby? |
9:21 |
: Oso Blanco FTW
|
9:21 |
While I’m enjoying Paul Goldschmidt’s Joey Votto impersonation, if he settles in as a 12% BB guy and a 20 or 21% K guy, what is is he moving forward? |
9:21 |
: top three 1B. Top 1b?
|
9:21 |
Is Greinke safe to start tonight if my h2h opponent is starting Hudson? |
9:21 |
: Yes
|
9:22 |
ENO, I would like you to be my fantasy consigliere for about 2 min here…SO, I was offered HanRam & Harper for Tulo & Puig…feel like it’s a total sell high on Puig…but I can’t decide if it’s worth it to give up Tulo…caveat: my OF consists of Gomez, A-Jax, Crawford, & Soriano…AND i struggle in SB…pull the trigger or keep Tulo? |
9:23 |
: Even when everyone is healthy, you could use Harper. I’m assuming it’s not a keeper league. And I’m seeing more whiff in Puig’s game than I thought. I know it’s hard to send the best player out, but if depth can help you — and it might here — do it. You can wait a bit so Harper gets closer.
|
9:23 |
It’s too sunny here. 🙁 So hot. |
9:23 |
![]() Another week, another Duda update. The baseball gods have not been kind to our beloved Lucas Duda this week. 1 HR 1 RBI .174/.240 OBP. To make things better, here is a funny picture of him. |
9:23 |
it’s the internet–the WHOLE THING is the front row. Plus, you don’t have to overpay for beer at this show. |
9:23 |
Nice Article on Cain. You convinced me he will be okay. |
9:24 |
can all my opposing hitters be marlins? |
9:24 |
: Interlude/d
|
9:24 |
Heyward: possibly the most epic buy low opportunity? |
9:24 |
: Yes.
|
9:24 |
But yes. |
9:24 |
Rank ros : Ruby de la, Allen Webster, Cmart? They ask must adds when called up? |
9:25 |
: Actually I think the best bet is that none of them are big factors this season. CMart maybe first likeliest to play, Webster or CMart with biggest upside.
|
9:25 |
Is Wheeler worth going and getting now? I don’t necessarily want to waste a roster spot on him, but if he’s a stud he’s a stud. Gausman burned me last week…not looking for another guy who WILL be good vs who IS good. K/IP & sub 4.00 ERA for this kid? |
9:25 |
: It’s the perils of youngsters. I *think* Wheeler will be good, and he does have something going for him that Gausman didn’t: the NL.
|
9:26 |
Buy low on Biogenesis players? |
9:26 |
: I think so, in general. But maybe not in H2H. If you get Braun, he plays most of the season, but loses appeals right before playoffs…
|
9:26 |
Hector Santiago worth a pickup for a few weeks? |
9:27 |
: I do like his K rate. And screwball! I’d be careful about pitching him all the time at home in mixed leagues.
|
9:27 |
Who do you prefer in dynasty formats: Alcides Escobar or Didi Gregorius? |
9:27 |
: Didi higher ceiling, Alcides higher floor. Considering the position, I’d want Alcides because I hate shortstops anyway, and a guy that will steal some bases is fine.
|
9:27 |
“This is a witch hunt! Ryan Braun is innocent I tell ya, INNOCENT!”- nobody but Brewers fans |
9:28 |
: Hole on. The first part can be true without the second part.
|
9:28 |
Edwin got 3rd base eligibility in some leagues. Where is he now in fantasy value? |
9:28 |
: Probably second or third third baseman, maybe a second rounder.
|
9:28 |
How much playing time does Raja get when he returns? Is he better than De Aza for example? |
9:28 |
: Rajai Davis? He really should only be played against lefties.
|
9:28 |
What do you make of Allen Craig’s power outage? He’s been a solid producer for me but it’s still kind of annoying. |
9:29 |
: I think he’s probably a 20-hr guy true talent.
|
9:29 |
Will I get back on track? |
9:29 |
: Just a little regression.
|
9:29 |
It’s a trap! |
9:29 |
: Exactly.
|
9:29 |
Just sent you a tweet and then saw this so I’ll re ask here: I’ve got Marcum and Straily and Cashner all going today v. WAS , CWS, and COL respectively. Any to avoid starting here? |
9:30 |
: Cash IN COL seems like a sit. And I think Straily is IN CWS, so I think I might sit him too.
|
9:30 |
Is there a second basemen you could recommend picking up in a deep league? |
9:30 |
: Oh good god no. It’s terrible. I just picked up Mark Ellis. Ug.
|
9:30 |
Beer Question? Ever had Unibrour Tipel. It is currently in my fridge awaiting my arrival home |
9:31 |
: It’s good, but I don’t love the style.
|
9:31 |
Do you think Tony Cingrani will be called up again with Cueto back on the DL? Also, do you ever almost call him Queto? |
9:31 |
: HAH QUETO YES. um, it has to be Cingrani, right? Especially after the trouncing that last guy got. They haven’t said it yet…
|
9:31 |
Am I for real? |
9:31 |
: I don’t think so. So old.
|
9:31 |
Rendon or LeMahieu ROS? |
9:32 |
: Rendon. Can’t find DJLM’s skill other than baseball.
|
9:32 |
Is Corey Kluber actually good or is Carson just being Carson? |
9:32 |
: Kluber is way better than I thought. Not sure he’s a mixed leaguer just yet, maybe a deep mixed leaguer.
|
9:32 |
Re: trading. We switched from a roto league to H2H in hopes it would increase trading. No luck, not one trade yet this year. It is all the peeps you roll with |
9:32 |
you could encourage more trades by allowing trades that have a set point at which the players revert to their initial teams in a H2H. I imagine people would be less risk-averse if they were just trading a spare closer or w/e for a week and then getting him back |
9:33 |
Are oranges orange because of the color orange, or is the color orange orange because of the fruit? |
9:33 |
: had to finish that up with some deep thought action
|
9:33 |
Once Rendon gets 2B eligibility, do you prefer him or Nick Franklin? Do you think Rendon is up to stay? |
9:33 |
: Prefer Franklin. Rendon won’t steal much.
|
9:33 |
Belt, Ike Davis, Hosmer – drop one |
9:34 |
: So glad you didn’t ask me to MFK. In a batting average league, Davis.
|
9:34 |
Cain or Price ROS (assuming Price is fine)? |
9:34 |
: price, but you can’t assume that
|
9:34 |
Edmundo Franklin is looking pretty good. 6BB:3K. Neil Walker comp good or is he better? |
9:34 |
: Obv *could* be better since we know less. But Walker was pretty good last year.
|
9:34 |
I need an OF badly. Do I offer Matt Moore for Ryan Braun? |
9:34 |
: If not H2H, I think this is great.
|
9:34 |
Are your worried about Greinke or Hamels? |
9:35 |
: Nope!
|
9:35 |
I have some OF depth and my team is a contender in a dynasty league. Trade Dom Brown to get Lester? |
9:35 |
: oooh. Man. could you add a bad/old pitcher and get a sleeper young guy back? I mean… you’re losing like five years in the peak there. I’d have a hard time pulling that trigger.
|
9:36 |
talk of closers being traded is starting to heat up.. who are the buyers? detroit? also, will any of these closers that get traded actually close or will they turn into higher leverage middle men? |
9:36 |
: yes Detroit is a buyer. I could see Dodgers doing something silly. Baltimore could buy and not close them, or even use them as closer.
|
9:36 |
Drop espinosa in a keeper, or hold on bench. The “best” alternative in Valbuena |
9:37 |
: Valbuena is useful in OBP leagues!
|
9:37 |
Why is Matt Cain struggling? |
9:37 |
: Missing the edge and hitting the heart, out in front at his release point could be the cause. Now you don’t have to read it.
|
9:37 |
Eno, Eno, Eno, cant you see, sometimes your chats just hypnotize me. |
9:37 |
Here’s your chance to do your dance at the Space Jame ALLLRIGHHTTTTTT |
9:38 |
Does anyone have this annoying ad for nursing with some lady blowing bubbles to a kid? I never get any bubbles when I go to the doctors… |
9:38 |
: happy crazy grumpy
|
9:38 |
I’m worried Beer Graphs will suffer from a severe west-coast bias. Are you going to have enough coverage of awesome east-coast breweries like Sixpoint, Singlecut and Captain Lawrence? |
9:39 |
: We’ve got guys all over the country and we’ll do our best. I am west-coast biased, you are correct. But our leaderboards have 2million+ points of data from all over the country.
|
9:39 |
Will Teheran keep his rotation spot or should I try to trade him now? |
9:39 |
: I think he’ll keep it.
|
9:39 |
Where’s liriano amongst the lackey/straily/parker crowd? |
9:39 |
: first.
|
9:39 |
: Been telling y’all. Liriano in the NL, in a park that suppresses RH HR…
|
9:39 |
KEEPER QUESTION: How would you rank the following prospects for NEXT season: Profar, Myers, Puig, Taveras, Hamilton? Thanks! |
9:40 |
: Profar, Puig, Taveras all very close, since MI more important than OF. Myers, then Hamilton.
|
9:40 |
What can we expect to see from Rendon at Second Base? |
9:40 |
: Good OBP. some power.
|
9:41 |
What happens if I don’t enter a name? |
9:41 |
: that
|
9:41 |
I heart Flower Power |
9:41 |
: yum
|
9:41 |
Reasonable fantasy return for Prince Fielder? |
9:41 |
: You have to go into the teams that need power, hitting, find some players that they might actually give up, and then come back with some names. These sort of questions are virtually impossible to me.
|
9:41 |
I have a feeling this biogenesis thing is going to be similar to the Saints bounty scandal in that it’ll end up looking like the commissioner/league office went way overboard because they wanted to send some sort of message, but at the end of the day everyone involved just looks terrible |
9:42 |
Had the Rogue VooDoo Donut the other day – did nothing for me – tasted like a regular chocolate stout |
9:42 |
: Their double chocolate is great.
|
9:42 |
Just had O-Gii beer from MKE Brewery. It has tea in it, which sounds weird but tastes great. Highly recommend. |
9:42 |
: I’ve seen this a bit. I’m skeptical, but want to try.
|
9:42 |
for juan pierres mustache – Lavery Smoked Porter is a must try |
9:42 |
is Cishek even worth rostering on a 12 team redraft? |
9:42 |
: Starting to think no, unless you desperate. Isn’t being used as a closer. Might be Dunn. That pen is a MESS.
|
9:42 |
Paul Goldschmidt — best 1B in MLB? There’s that Canadian guy, too.. |
9:43 |
: yah but he doesn’t steal that much any more. I’d be more comfortable calling Goldy a top three guy too though.
|
9:43 |
Trade Pedroia for Braun in a H2H league? Everth would by my everyday 2b |
9:43 |
: Oh, Everth, who’s in the Biogenisis too? That’s too much risk for me.
|
9:43 |
Hey Eno, Enjoy the talks but not really the interludes or beer! Anyway, what do you think of Derrick Holland and Rick Porcello ROS? They’re both using different pitch mixes to success. Do you think it continues? |
9:44 |
: Each/own. I don’t quite believe in Porcello. Maybe he’ll be better, but I don’t see much more than a 7K9, so ceiling lower anyway. Love Holland. Always wanted to see more command, and I think we’re seeing it.
|
9:44 |
I’ll be at the Red Sox game tonight if anyone wants to find me and talk about how much we hate Juan Pierres Mustache. |
9:44 |
Kelly Johnson or Kipnis ROS? |
9:44 |
: Kipnis.
|
9:44 |
Right now I have Bautista, Pence, and Dom Brown in my OF. Carl Crawford and Stanton are on DL. It sounds like Stanton should be back next week. Would you trade Crawford straight up for Licnecum, and then have Stanton, Bautista, Pence in OF and Brown at UTIL? Or save him for injury insurance. I’m riding a lot of young arms that might be gone during playoff time, so I’m trying to shore up my SP. |
9:45 |
: I would not trade for Lincecum.
|
9:45 |
he may never close, but that forknuckle thing is freakin awesome |
9:45 |
I still don’t know what happened in Game of Thrones! I still don’t care! |
9:45 |
Miggy would have to be unkeepable not to take that instantly! |
9:45 |
FLOWER POWER IS THE BEST |
9:45 |
I turned down Gerrit Cole and Bogaerts for Strasburg. Smart or smrt? |
9:46 |
: Well you got a bird in the hand if you’re competitive, no need to do that. You’ve played the percentages correctly.
|
9:46 |
I suck. Just thought you should know |
9:46 |
: But don’t forget how good you once where! Does make you think about Greg Holland and Ernesto Frieri a bit differently though.
|
9:46 |
Grab Buxton now, or forever hold your peace? |
9:46 |
: You might have to wait a while, but nobody is saying he’s not a stud.
|
9:47 |
Yes/No: Joey Votto’s brain explodes during a AB this season? Dude looks incredibly intense this year, even for him. |
9:47 |
: Dude is THINKING.
|
9:47 |
is David Walker coming to the beergraphs event tomorrow? I don’t think I can make it up there 🙁 |
9:47 |
: No, but the Public House might get something special delivered that day. We’ll see.
|
9:47 |
Hold or drop Daniel Hudson? Stiffness in his elbow doesn’t sound terrible. |
9:47 |
: Just making his way back, not Ryan Madson yet.

I’m just about to finish a 6-pack of Left Hand Milk Stout this weekend. I bought it purely from hearing about it in this chat and it was a great decision. Thanks Eno! |
9:48 |
: so so good
|
9:48 |
Hahaha, I just had too look up what FTW stood for. Im 35, FTW! |
9:48 |
: Dude. I have to look up acronyms all the time. I’m 33!
|
9:48 |
Would you rather be called ‘little buddy’ or ‘big douche’? |
9:48 |
: um.
|
9:49 |
So, what you are suggesting is the Braves may decide to toss Medlen to the pen because he may possibly in the future not be a top of the rotation arm? I could see the logic in the that if his competition wasn’t Tim Hudson and Paul Maholm. Neither of those guys at this point in their careers are sure things either. |
9:49 |
: He was almost ace-like in the pen. I like Maholm right now. Hudson? Gotta shrug. He’s the vet.
|
9:49 |
How is Lucas Duda’s nickname not, “The Dude?” |
9:49 |
: To some it is.
|
9:49 |
Oat from Southern Tier. Its Chris Davis in a glass. |
9:49 |
Stanton aiming for Monday return!! |
9:50 |
: Finally. Power, few RBI. Maybe a bit worse BA because of knees.
|
9:50 |
RIYL: Clinic. The Clientele. Same church, different pew. Clintele a bit more lush and less of a paranoid sound. But both are English and, if we’re being honest, pasty. |
9:50 |
: Hey! Someone got it! I like the paranoid sound. It’s like paranoid surfer rock from England.
|
9:50 |
Would you start Straily / Hudson tonight and hope for a combined ERA of 2.987? |
9:50 |
: Probably not going to start Straily in Chicago and hope for that.
|
9:51 |
Jon Lester or Pat Corbin? Those names have the exact same number of letters. |
9:51 |
: and yet lester is better!
|
9:51 |
Holliday or Heyward ROS? |
9:51 |
: Heyward’s steals make up for lower BA upside.
|
9:51 |
Neshaminy Creek Tribute Triple!?! I grew up on the Neshaminy Creek, ship some to Seattle! |
9:51 |
Hey, Eno! Who puts more wowzers in your trousers ROS at short? Ramirez or Stephen Drew? |
9:52 |
: not much wow down there for either. Ramirez I guess.
|
9:52 |
Ride the hot hand with Iglesias? |
9:52 |
: no not really
|
9:52 |
Woke up quick at about noon Jus’ thought that duda had to hit soon I gotta get drunk before the game begins Before my mother starts bitchin about his swings About to go and damn near went blind Young kids on the path throwing up Yankees signs Ran in the house, and grabbed my bat With my Lucas Duda shirt and my baseball hat Bailed outside and I pointed the way Just as I thought the fools just stay Jumped in the fo’ hit the juice on ma ride I got Lucas Duda, lets go for a ride |
9:52 |
What date is Super 2 and what players do you expect to be called up? |
9:53 |
: looks like it’s earlier than June 15. Mets are betting it is and will let Wheeler pitch June 12 I think. We’ll start seeing some nice young players on cheap teams now.
|
9:53 |
Ugh, I was watching Santiago on tv. His pitches are fast but with very little movement. Not buying. |
9:53 |
: you didn’t like the screwball?
|
9:53 |
Are you saying those were witches we burned at Salem? 😛 |
9:53 |
sometimes, the people targeted in witch hunts actually are witches |
9:54 |
I did the unthinkable? I traded Puig and De Anza yesterday for Wacha and Rendon. |
9:54 |
: Hmm. A lot of hype in that trade. Dunno why you wanted to give up on De Aza so bad.
|
9:54 |
masterson/swisher for cahill/reynolds who says no? |
9:54 |
: I want Swisher.
|
9:55 |
liriano has had three nutso outings and one bad–against the tigers. what do you think? |
9:55 |
: Don’t start him in AL parks.
|
9:55 |
Wouldn’t it be funny if everyone was like, “I got Braun on the cheap and he won’t get suspended!” but then he massively underperformed for the ROS because of his thumb? |
9:55 |
The problem with Fangraphs is that I play in a league full of fangraphs readers, so I can’t take any of these juicy bits of info and use them to my advantage. I can’t trade Matt Moore because they all read all the stuff you guys publish about him. I’m going to privately email you my roster to you have a black list of players you shouldn’t write about. Deal? |
9:55 |
I own Josh Johnson, but I’m terrified to use, trade, drop, or start him. Thoughts? |
9:55 |
: Yes, he’s terrifying.
|
9:55 |
: Still owns upside. Give him as long as you can.
|
9:56 |
Will Stanton hot dog it throughout the rest of the season, or will he play up to his talent? |
9:56 |
: Even if he doesn’t care about the Marlins, there’s arbitration and trade as carrots.
|
9:56 |
Yesterday, Dave Cameron said he would not (yet) group Manny Machado with Trout, Harper and Stanton. Do you agree? |
9:56 |
: Yeah. a lot of infield flies in Machado’s line, not the same power as those other guys.
|
9:56 |
There was some noise around doing an appendectomy article. Holliday, Dunn, A.Torres have all gone through it and anecdotally had a rough stretch coming back. Any fire from this smoke? |
9:57 |
: Pretty much already done. Check out Zimm’s mash articles. He references his old piece on appendectomies and talks about it in reference to Heyward.
|
9:57 |
Who do you think is better for fantasy? Appel or Gray? |
9:58 |
: Appel has better control, which might beget better health from the research I’ve seen. His changeup is legit now, even if Gray has more velocity. I’ll take Appel.
|
9:58 |
Assure me that Cole Hamels will be ok the rest of the season and has just been unlucky… I liked what I saw last, but it was against the Marlins. |
9:58 |
: I saw no reason to not believe in Hamels before that start.
|
9:58 |
Where does Rendon rank now among 2B? I think right outside of the top 5, but I really want your glorious opinion |
9:58 |
: outside of top ten, honestly.
|
9:58 |
What’s your draft beer tonight Eno? I’m cracking a bomber of Barrel-aged Wake Up Dead from our good friends at Left Hand Brewery. |
9:58 |
: I’m working on BeerGraphs, which means it has to be Double Jack.
|
9:59 |
Your voice was a lot deeper than I expected it to be when listening to the first podcast I’ve heard that included you. |
9:59 |
: Hey! I’m on twice a week at the Sleeper and the Bust.
|
9:59 |
: I mean cough cough HEY [in deeper voice]
|
9:59 |
Better Buy low : Moose Tacos or Ike Davis? |
10:00 |
: Oh jeebus. oh man. uh. neither? Okay. Ike’s plate discipline is lost but he had better PD in past. Moose never really did. Moose has crazy bad batted ball mix, and that’s reliable by now. So Ike by a nose.
|
10:00 |
Gyorko heating up! |
10:00 |
: f that he’s flaming hot
|
10:00 |
People always say: that story would make a great movie; refering to Hamilton, or Gattis, or now Nava, but then no one actually makes these movies. Can you talk to your Hollywood connections? thx |
10:01 |
: Well… honestly I think Gattis might be the only one that’s *actually* story worthy. Hamilton, too, but it might be darker and dirtier.
|
10:01 |
What is Rendon’s short-term (ROS) upside? What is his long-term upside? AVG/OPS/HRs? |
10:02 |
: Right now, he’s probably .250/.350/.400, which is meh. If he started the rest of the year, maybe 5-7 HR. Long term, more power upside, probably a better batting average.
|
10:02 |
Is Aaron Hill a good future comp for Franklin, or is that too high? |
10:02 |
: Hill more about power. and swinging for fences.
|
10:03 |
How are your fantasy teams this year? Anything especially interesting to tell? |
10:03 |
: Most are doing well. The teams where I went young with starting pitching (most of them, since the youngsters were cheaper) are doing great. My 15-team H2H keeper where I went ‘old’ with starting pitching? TERRIBLE.
|
10:03 |
It is amazing that Yahoo! still hasn’t fixed Edmundo |
10:03 |
: They did. And then…
|
10:03 |
Is there anything more annoying than people who dont respond to trade offers consistently? Especially when they update their trading block. |
10:04 |
: Sometimes I leave offers I won’t take out there to remind me of a guy’s interest, and to handcuff them from making moves without canceling the offer haha. So yeah, I’m being annoying.
|
10:04 |
How come there is so little trading in fantasy baseball? I’m in 8 yahoo leagues and only one of them is active. When I make an offer they normally don’t even respond. Make them respond, please…. |
10:05 |
: Some of it is just inactive teams. Some of it is people overvaluing their own players. Some of it is not being ready to cut bait on struggling players.
|
10:05 |
“I could see the Dodgers doing something silly” should be their team slogan or something. |
10:05 |
We use errors as a stat in a H2H dynasty league and one manager is very dug in on its importance. Please tell him he’s a fool. |
10:05 |
: Tell him Ozzie Smith is top ten in errors all time.
|
10:05 |
trying to deal for buxton. been turned down using t. walker straight up. would you sweeten the deal with nolasco if in rebuild mode and deep in prospect pitching? or is that too much? |
10:05 |
: If you talking Ricky Nolasco, go mf sweeten.
|
10:06 |
Re: oranges. The colour is actually named after the fruit. Before that, it was called “red-yellow” or something like that. |
10:06 |
: mind. blown.
|
10:06 |
do i start kory kluber @tex, vs wash next week? |
10:06 |
: @Tex is too scary for me.
|
10:06 |
Jon Hamm’s cousin just got drafted. Hear his WHIP (WHiskey Imbibed per [advertising] Pitch) is off the charts. |
10:06 |
Beergraphs: when you say “all over the country” does that mean Canada is left out? 🙁 |
10:07 |
: WE HAVE CANADIANS! or at least Canadian.
|
10:07 |
How crazy is Chris Davis? How many HR does he end up with? |
10:07 |
: 43
|
10:07 |
BeerGraphs logo is top notch! |
10:07 |
: thanks!
|
10:07 |
I have Jupton, offer him to the braun owner? |
10:07 |
: I don’t see the need.
|
10:07 |
do you have any faith in josh reddick? worth buy-low candidate? |
10:08 |
: He didn’t get surgery. I guess that’s a good thing. if power is all you need, the league batting average is down to like .251 this year, means his bad BA hurts less. Sure.
|
10:08 |
Does Bundy start any games in the ML’s this year or is that pretty much out of the question now? |
10:08 |
: He didn’t get the surgery, he could come up.
|
10:08 |
okay then how about liriano at wrigley tomorrow? |
10:08 |
: Yeah I would. Well, check the wind and weather. If it’s warm, maybe no.
|
10:09 |
Being a saison fan, you need to make your way down to Capitola for some Sante Adairius. Delicious. |
10:09 |
You had the Oaked Arrogant Bastard? It’s weird. I “like” it in that it was interesting and had this crazy wood-chip taste that was pretty cool, but I also didn’t really want to finish it. |
10:09 |
: Agreed. And I had to drink a whole growler. By the end I was like no thanks.
|
10:09 |
is locke legit |
10:09 |
: A lot of deception in the delivery, might get figured out second time around. More of a real-life 3/4, fantasy end of rotation.
|
10:10 |
can i trust lackey @tampa, @bal next week? yikes |
10:10 |
: the first is fine, and he did well against tex at home, feel like I’d do it.
|
10:10 |
Yan Gomes the real deal? He’s available in a pts. league and I have an offer for Santana that would bolster my starting pitching. |
10:10 |
: Is he going to play at first base regularly? Or just be the backup catcher. And will his contact rate hold? I’m skeptical.
|
10:10 |
assuming I live in the North Atlanta Area; what beer should I be drinking |
10:11 |
: Not sweetwater?
|
10:11 |
To be clear, it’s time to start shopping Medlen, right? |
10:12 |
: I have no knowledge of the Braves’ plans. I feel ill equipped to tell you what will happen. I just know that Tim Hudson is a vet’s vet and Atlanta seems to care about these things. Anyway, some people like Medlen more than his upside, so you might as well look around.
|
10:12 |
Sierra Nevada Southern Hemisphere is a 7 WAR beer at least. Sixpoint’s Resin is an 8-9 WAR beer for me. Two of my favorites! |
10:12 |
: love the first, want the second
|
10:12 |
I never have an idea about the lyrics of the day, so I’m just going to guess “This is How We Do It” by Montell Jordan every week until I’m right. |
10:12 |
Is there a precedent for what J-Zimm is doing with regards to his domination with no K’s? |
10:13 |
: you’d just think his ground ball rate would be better. I’m a bit worried.
|
10:13 |
hellickson good second half? |
10:13 |
: There’s some hope. A little.
|
10:13 |
Should I trade D’Arnaud for Wheeler in a dynasty league if I already have Zunino and have my biggest weakness at pitching? |
10:13 |
: I’m not sure TDA will be a great fantasy asset. Normally I’d take the hitter, but catchers seem like pitchers. Higher bust rate, higher injury rate.
|
10:14 |
Drunk driving, rampant infidelity, bean balls/charging the mound which risks careers for the sake of macho “tradition,” #umpshows…and it’s PEDs that are ruining the integrity of the game? Gimme a break. |
10:14 |
I’m sad I can’t make it to the (not) beergraphs/fangraphs meetup tomorrow; girlfriend just moved in and we’re going to the First Friday/Art Walk instead. Bummmmer |
10:14 |
Miracle Hinacle! |
10:14 |
Teheran is currently at 1.90 BB/9, but most projections have him landing between 2.5-3. Do you think his control is actually better than advertised? |
10:15 |
: I actually think it might be worse. When I watched him, his command was bad. Might have more control then command. Also, he’s doing this with a fastball/sinker/curveball combo, which is really two pitches. He’s no definite thing.
|
10:15 |
should i stash billy hamilton |
10:15 |
: I think he’ll come up and steal a bunch of bases and play CF. In a couple weeks. But I’m in the minority at this point.
|
10:15 |
do i trade bj upton |
10:15 |
: You won’t get anything, might as well hold him on your bench.
|
10:16 |
Whenever my parents here someone say Carlos Marmol, they shout “Stupid Marmol” in unison. |
10:16 |
Who is Scooter Gennett? Is he related to the ‘Scooter’ Phil Rizzuto? |
10:16 |
: Milwaukee second baseman. Feel like he does nothing better than Weeks, only makes a bit more contact. Don’t think first names work like that!
|
10:17 |
Not like the interludes or the beer?!? Some days I find myself limited on time and actually skip the baseball for the beer and ludes! |
10:17 |
: well now we got guys on both sides. Time for a Monkey Knife Fight.
|
10:17 |
better probability of fulfilling potential: Yasiel Puig or George Springer? |
10:17 |
: Puig. Strikeout rate.
|
10:17 |
i have lawrie in a dl spot. should i put hudson morrow mcarthy or madson there instead? |
10:17 |
: not if you mean dropping Lawrie.
|
10:18 |

10:18 |
: Taveras is ready. Just neesd a spot.
|
10:18 |
Will Beergraphs have links to local maps of brewery locations? |
10:18 |
: This is a good idea. We hope to evolve like FG did. Keep adding things as we can.
|
10:19 |
I once knew a man named McNass, His balls were made out of brass, When the two hit together, It caused stormy weather, And LIGHTNING!!!!!! shot out of his ass! |
10:19 |
: I gotta go soon so that’s a good idea
|
10:19 |
: y’all wanna?
|
10:19 |
If you fart on muni whilst holding your kid, would you blame it on the boy? |
10:19 |
: always
|
10:19 |
Or El-Duda-Rino if you’re not into that whole “brevity” thing. Totally my fantasy team name next year. |
10:19 |
The other day I spoke with beer and it said to drink beer. |
10:19 |
Is Adrian Gonzalez’s power back for real? |
10:19 |
: no
|
10:20 |
always lightning! |
10:20 |
You should look for international contributions to Beergraphs. I have some German friends that love the idea. |
10:20 |
: send em my way. i even speak german.
|
10:20 |
Pitch f/x says Teheran threw 45 fastballs and 41 sliders yesterday. Coming up though, his change was his best pitch and he had almost no semblance of a breaking pitch. It looks like switching from a curve to a slider has worked well, but if he can regain the feel for his changeup, how soon do you think he becomes a pretty good pitcher? |
10:20 |
: but he’s not throwing the change
|
10:21 |
Thank you for keeping me entertained during class |
10:21 |
lighting!!! i mean lightning. dammit. |
10:21 |

10:21 |
: yes
|
10:21 |
EVERYBODY! |

10:22 |
Geek lightning. |
10:22 |
Teheran or Liriano ROS? |
10:22 |
: Liriano
|
10:22 |

10:22 |

|
10:22 |

Swap Dom Brown for JUpton? |
10:23 |

|
10:23 |
Garza or Cahill ROS? |
10:23 |
: Cahill. Garza ends up in AL IMO.
|
10:23 |
What happens to Ozuna when Marsinick and Yelich called up and Stanton back? |
10:23 |
: That thing won’t happen.
|
10:24 |
Gaussman or Skaggs |
10:24 |
: GAUS.
|
10:24 |
Will Beergraphs be one of the tabs on the fangraphs website? Hoe excited are you for the drop? |
10:24 |
: We will have a presence, once Appelman is back from vacation
|
10:24 |
Is Yasiel Puig the best player ever? |
10:24 |
: well, maybe third or fourth
|
10:24 |
Is Kevin Gregg a closer you’d roster, or just dump for a better pitcher in a lesser role? |
10:24 |
: I’d roster him, and shop him.
|
10:24 |
Desmond Jennings or Jason Kipnis? |
10:24 |
: Kipnis
|
10:24 |
Alex Gordon or Alex Rios? |

|
10:26 |
Any chance Olt gets a shot at 1B this soon back from the DL down there? |
10:26 |
: OF if Cruz gets suspended?
|
10:26 |
Darvish for Beltre too much? |
10:26 |
: no, if it fits needs.
|
10:26 |
rank em… doumit, castro, montero, martinez |
10:27 |

Jordan Lyles….sneaky good? 22 w/ only 1 bad outing… |
10:30 |
: has some upside
|
10:30 |
Nolasco actually sweetens a trade offer??? No wonder I haven’t been able to successfully trade much! My next strategy: “I know you won’t accept my Yuniesky for your Trout. But what if I ALSO took a dump on your doorstep and lit it on fire? How does THAT sound?!?” |
10:30 |
: maybe there’s another nolasco, a prospect?
|

With a phone full of pictures of pitchers' fingers, strange beers, and his two toddler sons, Eno Sarris can be found at the ballpark or a brewery most days. Read him here, writing about the A's or Giants at The Athletic, or about beer at October. Follow him on Twitter @enosarris if you can handle the sandwiches and inanity.
Man, I kinda want to take credit for introducing Bryz to Left Hand Milk Stout…but try find the nitro-infused!
