Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 8/15/13
11:38 |
: Hey! Will be here at top of the hour.
|
12:00 |
She’s been dreaming Now she’s working |
12:01 |
eno! fix your chat so the whole transcript is available when it closes. it’s very sad every week when it just stops after a certain point |
12:01 |
|
12:01 |
In a dynasty league where you are more than likely going into the playoffs, do you do a Nelson Cruz for Brandon Belt deal? |
12:01 |
: Yes.
|
12:01 |
Will cargo play again this seas? |
12:02 |
: I am not a doctor! He’s working out. I think he might play a bit.
|
12:02 |
Hi Eno – please map out how the Pittsburgh Pirates can possibly win the 2013 World Series in 6 steps or less. |
12:03 |
: 1) AJB and Liriano stay healthy. 2) They find a real-life RF from the group of Snider, Tabata and Lambo. 3) A rando gets hot — Walker, Pedro, Mercer — someone that isn’t in a star but can help power the team through the postseason. NOTE: these things are all very possible.
|
12:03 |
Just had some bells Oarsman, it was just ok. If I didn’t like it should I stay away from sours/saisons? Have a recommendation for me? |
12:04 |
: No, that’s a different taste. Oarsman is a wit. Saisons have a more peppery taste. Some saisons are tart, and if you like those, you’ll like sours. I recommend starting with a bretta saison or a Saison Dupont, and that’ll let you know if you want to continue down that path.
|
12:04 |
Given Coco’s lack of production is there somethin more to his wrist injury? Man i love the Firestone Double jack im glad it only comes in a 4 pack |
12:04 |
: I don’t think he ‘deserves’ his low BABIP. But he’s getting older, and the injuries will come. Good thing they got Young, I guess. FWDJFTW
|
12:05 |
How do you approach valuing prospects in dynasty leagues? Prospects can go for a lot in some leagues before they hit the majors, do you generally prefer holding onto them and taking the risk that they gain more value? |
12:06 |
: For the most part, I trade em. Even top ten prospects have a 50% bust rate, and in fantasy, that’s probably 60+%. And if you read Cwik’s piece about rookies, more often than not, they struggle, which means you have a period in which you can get a prospect back after they’ve hit the majors and struggled. Think Profar. Now’s a great time to get him in a dynasty league, particularly since Andrus cleared waivers and it looks like the Rangers would be willing to trade him.
|
12:06 |
Do you expect Alcedes Escobar to bounce back next year? I remember earlier in the year, we talked about how he was a better valued Andrus. That potential still there to stash? |
12:07 |
: I think my comment about Alcides was more a denigration of Andrus from the fantasy perspective. Both are .270 type hitters with no power and good speed. Neither is a great keeper in shallower leagues, both are above replacement.
|
12:07 |
I’m in an AL only league that uses QS’s. Garza is killing me by giving up 4 ER’s seemingly every game, since he came over to the American League. Hold or drop? |
12:07 |
: Well in an AL-only league you gotta keep. But this was kinda forseeable.
|
12:07 |
Who has more upside as a keeper, Yadi or Rizzo? |
12:07 |
: Yadi doesn’t have more upside, but he’s a better keeper because of his position, probably.
|
12:07 |
What kind of production do you project for A Rod ROS? |
12:07 |
: .260/20/2 type pace.
|
12:07 |
Should I start Sonny Gray vs. Houston tonight? |
12:08 |
: I like him. He’s home, has 94 mph fastball, can put curve where he wants.
|
12:08 |
Bourn or Crisp ros? |
12:08 |
: Bourn
|
12:08 |
What are you expecting out of Cobb today? |
12:08 |
: A great start. I don’t think the concussion harmed his arm.
|
12:08 |
If you, Eno, were the next baseball prodigy at the age of 16 in the USA, would you consider moving to Japan/Caribbean and sign as an international free agent instead of waiting for the USA draft? |
12:08 |
: Yes. Except schooling was always number one in my family.
|
12:09 |
Yelich and Fowler for Starlin Castro (15 keepers)? |
12:09 |
: Teams and OFs might be more important to know. 3OF 12-team, I’ll take the SS.
|
12:09 |
Twist me |
12:09 |
Eno, your name spelled backwards in One. Which is Juan in Spanish. Are you actually Juan Uribe? |
12:09 |
in Efik, a language spoken in Nigeria, ‘eno’ translates to ‘gift’. So there’s that. |
12:10 |
: Hey that’s pretty well done for an early interlude.
|
12:10 |
Rank ROS please: cole, doubront, beachy, gallardo |
12:10 |
: Cole, Beachy, Doubront, Gallardo.
|
12:10 |
Time to drop Colon in a 12-team mixer? Roster spots are precious, and I don’t feel good about starting him next time out. |
12:10 |
: Yeah his velocity bombed and he was on the clock anyway.
|
12:11 |
Better chance at making it into the wild card: Orioles or Indians? |
12:12 |
http://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=Standings has them finishing with the exact same record… both good but flawed teams. Maybe the Orioles. I wish I trusted one team’s top-end starters more.
: Our projections page |
12:12 |
Which is a better indication of true talent of a starting pitcher (assuming a large enough sample): ERA or WHIP? |
12:12 |
: WHIP I think. Pitchers and catchers have been agreeing with me. ERA has the problem that ground-ball pitchers give up runs but not earned runs. Point is to keep baserunners off the basepaths.
|
12:12 |
Is it strange that no one claimed Andrus? |
12:13 |
: I think so. Great defense at a premium position with a good enough bat is worth that contract IMO.
|
12:13 |
Did you see my infield pop-up? Gah! |
12:13 |
: I wonder if FanGraphs appeared in his thoughts at all when that happened.
|
12:13 |
Pick two to keep for next year: Rosario $3, Machado $12, Gyorko $1, AJax $1, Wil Myers $2, Everth Cabrera $3. |
12:14 |
: Rosario and Myers? I love their prices and Rosario plays an important position. E-Cab might be more .250 next year, AJax is over-rated, Gyorko and Machado are next in line.
|
12:14 |
We’re reading your chat to get lucky |
12:15 |
BOOM BOOM BOOM! Let me hear you say Eno. ENOOOO! |
12:15 |
I love Miguel Cabrera. Just sayin’. |
12:15 |
: feel the love lude
|
12:15 |
Is Cain for Freeman overpaying in a dynasty league? |
12:15 |
: Both good for their position, but not elite.
|
12:15 |
David Wright over / under 30 games ROS… |
12:16 |
: Under. Heard them talking about he’s done for sason.
|
12:16 |
Why does a player’s xFIP seem to be at odds with their projected FIPs from Zips or Steamer? Often they seem to be going in opposite directions. |
12:16 |
: xFIP assumes pitchers have no control over HR/FB rates, and I’m not sure that’s the case. Steamer and ziPs don’t think so either, it seems.
|
12:16 |
If you had to define a Beer “season” between Summer and Fall to push back Oktoberfest/Pumpkin releases, what type of beer would you like to see it made up of? |
12:16 |
Are you a fan of German beers? Just had Weihenstephan Vitus and it was fantastic. |
12:17 |
: Asked and answered. How about a late-summer Wit season?
|
12:17 |
Will Gregorius be a better hitter (eventually) than Simmons? |
12:17 |
: Definitely more upside. Not a bad defender either.
|
12:17 |
10 team H2H, 5×5 with 3 keepers. I have Trout and Harvey locked in to keep right now. Who would keep with the 3rd; Fielder, Kipnis, Machado, Scherzer or Strasburg? |
12:17 |
: I hate keeping pitchers in keep-threes. I’d go Kipnis because I love him and because second base.
|
12:17 |
I finished college, picked up a Cigar City/Mikkeller Choclate Cherry Stout, and got a short schedule pickup HR from Garrett Jones. What a day! |
12:17 |
From 1941-42, Ted Williams contributed 22.6 WAR to the Boston Red Sox. Then, Ted Williams took 3 seasons off to fight for the United States in World War II. Returning from WWII, Ted Williams contributed 22.3 WAR to the Sox for the 1946-47 seasons. How much WAR did Ted Williams contribute to the Allied War Efforts? |
12:18 |
I like Beer, and the title eno sarris BASEBALL chat is misleading. |
12:18 |
: “I was going to just write Eno Sarris Chat but Cover It Live promotes this so I should at least give baseball a shoutout” interlude
|
12:18 |
Do you like Estrada ROS? Should I drop Capuano or Erasmo for him? |
12:18 |
: I’d drop Cappy for him yes I would
|
12:18 |
Looking more in depth at Pedro Alvarez, he doesn’t do a lot of damage against changeups, but he does draw a decent amount of walks against them. With such a terrible OBP, Pedro isn’t a very good fastball hitter either, is he? |
12:19 |
: Wrote about this exact thing at Getting Blanked today. I think he’s just a swing and miss guy and any look at results on singular pitches will get a lot of whiffs and HRs. Half of the changeups he’s put in play have been homers!!
|
12:19 |
![]() This is how I feel when talking to stupid people about baseball. |
12:20 |
: Maxamuz, mostly disturbing as usual.
|
12:20 |
Has Ivan Nova entered the Circle of Trust? |
12:20 |
: I actually like his new approach/mix. He’s pretty close if not there.
|
12:20 |
Frieri gets his job back, De Le Rosa closes for the rest of the year, or Angels never win another game? |
12:20 |
: De La Rosa RoS. Frieri always gives up homers and walks, and I think that matters to Scioscia.
|
12:20 |
devendra! would you go with moose or arenado ros in case wright cant come back? |
12:21 |
: You got the lyrics! I think Arenado. Moose is hurt too.
|
12:21 |
Brad Miller looks awesome. Should I trust full time duties to him in my 12 man h2h and trade pedroia or Zobrist for help elsewhere? (probably pitching) |
12:21 |
: I like Miller. I think he can Zobrist, at least in fantasy terms.
|
12:21 |
When in a biergarten in Germany, would you prefer a helles or weis? Something else? (Rauchbier?!) |
12:21 |
: Schwarzbier.
|
12:21 |
Michael Brantley or Reddick ROS? |
12:22 |
: tough one. Vanilla or Creme Brulee ice cream. Vanilla will be there for you no matter what. But Creme Brulee could blow your mind.
|
12:22 |
: If you need power, and need upside, go creme brulee.
|
12:22 |
Do you use LD% for anything? If so, what? |
12:22 |
: Hmm. Not really. I give it an eye if a guy has done it for three years straight.
|
12:22 |
have you formed a favorite nickname for Andrew Lambo yey? |
12:22 |
: The Leap?
|
12:23 |
Better SS stash for September – Jeter, Profar, or Bogaerts? |
12:23 |
: Profar
|
12:23 |
ENO if YOU were the starting SS on the MLB team for all 162 games, 9 innings per game, what would be you WAR total? |
12:23 |
: -10
|
12:23 |
: actually, probably legendary. -15
|
12:23 |
So managers will be able to throw a challenge flag and challenge ANYTHING 3 times a game? oh boy |
12:23 |
: At least it’s only three times? Seems like a bad idea.
|
12:23 |
supposing ludwick isn’t entirely awful, frazier rebounds a little, cueto comes back and is cueto, and dusty stops doing dumb things at every opportunity, do you think the reds can a) win the division and b)make a run in the post season? |
12:24 |
: a) no b) maybe
|
12:24 |
Dave Cameron: Sensible or party pooper for not wanting to dream on Abreu based on his Cuban production / MLE. |
12:25 |
: Actually, maybe party pooper. I still like Davenport’s MLE for Cespedes as his true talent level (something like .265/.330 with power and speed). Abreu was the best hitter in Cuba. Of course, he’s also a stick figure first baseman type.
|
12:25 |
Did you know, according to Pitch F/X, Justin Verlander leads all qualified starters in changeups thrown. 30%. |
12:25 |
: For him, that’s probably not good news. The fastball is down a bit.
|
12:25 |
Anthony Rizzo’s ISO is higher than last year, but his SLG% is lower. What is the difference there? |
12:25 |
: Batting average. And I think it’s mostly BABIP. Which is why I still like him.
|
12:26 |
Can M. Sano be a 40 homer threat without being a threat to my AVG?? |
12:26 |
: Stanton says it’s possible, but I think it’s not probable.
|
12:26 |
Could you rank these pitchers for next season? Cole, S Miller, D Salazar? |
12:26 |
: Miller, Cole, Salazar. Love Salazar’s stuff, but the pedigree matters some.
|
12:26 |
Why isn’t George Springer in the majors yet? Ya he strikes out a lot, but so does Cargo..not really anything to prove after 32/38 in a season |
12:27 |
: He strikes out way more than CarGo. He strikes out Sano style. He strikes out so much it’s no guarantee that he’ll make it in the bigs.
|
12:27 |
Samardjiza or Salazar ROS? |
12:27 |
: The Shark. Samardzija will start. Salazar already blown by his career high in IP.
|
12:27 |
Brandon McCarthy or Ogando ROS? |
12:27 |
: McCarthy.
|
12:28 |
Settle something for me: my friend in second picked up Ryan Braun off waivers when he was dropped in a 12-team mixed keeper league with a short bench. I’m floundering in tenth and offered him Chris Johnson or BJ Upton in exchange but my friend turned it down — he wants Longoria. Who has the leverage here? Braun’s better, but Longoria is active now and has the position advantage. |
12:28 |
: Given the risk in Braun, I’d rather have Longoria. And since he’s in second, he needs the active player. You have the leverage, and it’s not clear you need to do this deal.
|
12:28 |
Did you see the PAfail that led to Putz throwing the ball directly into the ground? Hilarious. http://wapc.mlb.com/play/?content_id=29604209 |
12:28 |
![]() And now I bring you a break dancing bear-lude |
12:29 |
![]() Do you have this at your house? |
12:29 |
: Yes.
|
12:29 |
trade Kipnis and Sandoval for Machado and Choo? |
12:29 |
: No
|
12:29 |
What do you think about Archer ROS? |
12:30 |
: Still worried about that changeup! Platoon splits are a biotch.
|
12:30 |
Do you think Darin Ruf is legit? What can he do ROS? |
12:30 |
: No. I don’t. He had below average power when he was the same age as everyone in his league. In Double-A, he was two years older than everyone.
|
12:30 |
Like beer in a can? |
12:30 |
: Yes but I pour it into a glass. Cans keep the light out and the carbonation in, which is perfect.
|
12:30 |
do you like the new yahoo player pages? |
12:31 |
: No.
|
12:31 |
Is this where Iwakuma’s innings get ugly? |
12:31 |
: He has some innings risk. Look at his Japanese IP totals. He’s not the healthiest dude.
|
12:31 |
In regarding your interview with Samardjiza; Is his and possibly Ryan Dempster struggles are due to the use of the splitter and inconsistent control of other pitches? When they can’t locate the Fastball or Slider, they fall behind in counts and can’t use the splitter, losing their best out pitch? Contrasting a Kuroda, who’s control has been very good and has a result, has been very effective. |
12:32 |
: Yes. Control is tantamount for a splitter guy. Because they can’t really throw the splitter for strikes. Look at Mujica’s success. Throws the splitter more than anyone, but has elite elite control. I like the splitter, but I do want it to come with a guy with great control.
|
12:32 |
Should I try and sell high on jhoulys chaxin? His hr prevention can’t go on can it? |
12:32 |
: I would. Plus, he doesn’t K.
|
12:32 |
Gausman coming back up in Sept as high leverage reliever or starter? |
12:32 |
: Reliever. But I like him next year.
|
12:32 |
Just like Beergraphs, I’ve been reading ‘The Audacity of Hops’. Had no idea that basically no good beers were available before I was born. Also went to my local bar last night and they had Anchol Steam as a special! (on East Coast) |
12:33 |
: Yeah it’s funny I went to college right while the first beer bubble was bursting, and I thought Anchor and Sierra were great, new beers, but I didn’t like some of the other stuff I tried like Pete’s Wicked and so on. So I went to scotch and craft cocktails in London and NYC for a bit. But I’m glad I’m back.
|
12:33 |
Left-Hand Milk Stout Nitro in the fridge for the Bucs afternoon game! Great Successes! |
12:33 |
: yesssss
|
12:33 |
Archer worth keeping or just a streamer guy? |
12:34 |
: Right on the line. I’d stream.
|
12:34 |
Napoli’s dead hips are killing me, why isn’t Giancarlo hitting bombs? |
12:34 |
: Giancarlo’s batted ball distance is fine. He’s going oppo a bit more, but I think he’ll be good.
|
12:34 |
between cingrani and fister, who should i consider trading to upgrade my staff, |
12:34 |
: Cingrani still almost a one-pitch pitcher.
|
12:34 |
Andrus was on revocable waivers, so maybe the GM’s all understood he was going to get pulled back anyway? |
12:35 |
: Yes, this must factor in. PR of claiming, not getting factors in.
|
12:35 |
Stanton has been less than stellar this year. How does the prospect of him moving to Boston or Texas with their friendly parks affect his value in a keep 3 league? |
12:35 |
: He’s still a keep-three keeper for me, if more of a third-rounder with risk.
|
12:35 |
Boulevard the most underrated brewery? Beer snobs know, but man they’re unbelievable. |
12:35 |
: I’ve really been getting into them. Tank 7 and their IPA are great baseline beers, Love Child (with Sierra) is awesome, and Saison Bretta is elite.
|
12:36 |
Vandy grads in MLB: Price, Minor, Gray, Alvarez. Take that, Stanford. |
12:37 |
: Quentin, Fuld, Jason Castro, soon to be Mark Appel. Not quite the same, but not super shabby. ASU has em all beat in sheer nubmers I think. Plus, Tuffy Gosewich.
|
12:37 |
I’m starting something called a Tyson Ross today. What’s his deal? His player page must have had something that looked good to me. |
12:37 |
: Not sure he has the arsenal to succeed as a pitcher, but he’s a fine streamer at home.
|
12:37 |
I have idea to boost the popularity of baseball in America. Start a TV show with A-Rod, Puig, Votto and Greinke living in the same house during the winter. Selig as the host. |
12:37 |
Who is more likely to evolve into a hitting force, Gyorko or Rendon? |
12:38 |
: Gyorko steals bases some so he has more fantasy upside. But there’s something I like better about Rendon, maybe his power upside.
|
12:38 |
Redraft, should I trade Harvey for Fielder and Nova? |
12:39 |
: I traded Miller for Fielder, basically. But Harvey… don’t think so. He’ll miss a start or two at most, otherwise be excellent.
|
12:39 |
Will Kole Calhoun still get at-bats when Bourjos comes back? |
12:39 |
: I like him better than Shuck, but I liked his numbers better than before last night when Sam Miller pointed out that Calhoun was old for his levels and in nice hitter’s parks. Damn context.
|
12:39 |
What should Hak Ju Lee produce in the majors? |
12:40 |
: He could be Andrus-like? Maybe? Not sure he has same speed, but he’ll be more d-first, maybe have better BB%.
|
12:40 |
Eovaldi v SD tomorrow? Streamable? |
12:40 |
: Yes
|
12:40 |
Ever try Saint Arnold’s Lawnmower (it’s a Kolsch and brewed in a craft brewery in Houston). It’s my favorite beer, just wondering about it’s footprint in the northern US. |
12:40 |
: Have not seen it and Kolsches don’t always get wide distro.
|
12:40 |
Would a no-closer RP staff work in roto? stock up on Uehara’s? |
12:41 |
: Uehara is a closer. If you mean start the year with no closers, I’ve tried it some. More of a deep league strategy. This year in AL-LABR I started with Jose Veras, Andrew Bailey, and Joaquin Benoit. Saves are not my problem.
|
12:41 |
Haren or Martin Perez, ROS? |
12:41 |
: Take hte upside.
|
12:41 |
Choo has a 181 wRC+ vs. RHP, better than Mike Trout. He has a 59 wRC+ vs. LHP, essentially Alcides Escobar production. Extreme platoon splits much? Bryce Harper is heading down this dark path too. |
12:42 |
: Harper’s are not yet believable. Choos’ are.
|
12:42 |
Ever since his 2 hr day, Franklin has been Ackley 2012, why oh why doth 2b suck? |
12:42 |
: I believe in Franklin more. Better plate approach, and I htink he can cut the Ks again like he did in minors.
|
12:42 |
Dane de la Rosa, JJ Putz or Chia-Jen Lo ROS? Rank em please. |
12:43 |
: DDLR… Lo then Putz I guess, since Lo is inthere. But I like Putz.
|
12:43 |
lol I’m sure the yinzers would LOVE associating their RF with GB |
12:43 |
: Oooh. yeah. Uh. Huh. Limbo Lambo? WE can do better.
|
12:43 |
So you’re saying if we replaced andrelton simmons with you, you would be the starting SS on a MLB division leading team? |
12:44 |
: I said I would up up NEGATIVE 15 WAR.
|
12:44 |
What stats do you look at to find hitter pickups? |
12:45 |
: BABIP. If low, check GB/FB. If close to one, and he has power and some speed, easy buy low. Will also look at batted ball distance at baseballheatmaps to check power losses. ISO doesn’t become reliable until late in season.
|
12:45 |
can you think of a player who’s got a plate discipline profile like Starlin Castro that eventually turned it around.Need a little hope here |
12:45 |
: Chris Davis’ PD was worse.
|
12:45 |
Will Trout at his peak, be better than Miggy at his peak? |
12:46 |
: His K% says probably not. The genius of Miggy from my perspective is the plate coverage plus the power.
|
12:46 |
Who is Brian Dozier? Should I care about him, (from a fantasy baseball standpoint)? |
12:46 |
: He was supposed to be better than he was, and now he’s about what he could be. His BABIP is a perplexer to me. Will it always be low? If not, he could be a top-12 MI.
|
12:47 |
Holding out any hope for Corey Kluber this season? Seems like he is healing quickly. |
12:47 |
: I think he could pitch over the last two-to-three weeks!
|
12:47 |
K-Rod to pick up save opportunities in Baltimore? Jim Johnson = what have you done for me lately? |
12:47 |
: JJ survived worse earlier in the season. If he blows another, we can start talking.
|
12:47 |
Still in first place: Tulo, Kemp, and Wright were my top dollar picks. Holding on for dear life… |
12:47 |
: It’s not all about the draft!
|
12:47 |
ottoneu pts: What is your max price for keeping Hosmer? What price are you excited about him? |
12:48 |
: In points, where his steals aren’t a big deal and his lack of power is important, I really wouldn’t want to go much past $15. I’d be excited about him in single digits I guess.
|
12:48 |
As a Red Sox fan, I wanted Rizzo to be good even though he’s now on the Cubbies. But, I’m getting tired of waiting for him to explode. |
12:49 |
: Well I hope he doesn’t explode, that would be messy. I like what I see in his peripherals still. NO reason for a .250 BABIP.
|
12:49 |
Did I read on this chat recently that the Stone R&R Coconut IPA is pretty nice? Just got a bomber of it last night. |
12:49 |
: People like it. I haven’t had it.
|
12:49 |
Has this year changed your perception of Oscar Taveras? |
12:49 |
: No, I always thought the Cards would take forever with him. It’s what htey do.
|
12:49 |
May the Schwarzbier with you! |
12:50 |
Miguel Cabrera is good at baseball. That is all. |
12:50 |
Lambo calrissian |
12:50 |
: OOH WE MIGHT HAVE A WINNER
|
12:50 |
According to Pitch Values, Gee’s changeup has been only okay. Yes I’ve been looking into changeups. What of it? |
12:51 |
: I love changeups. His changeup is good. Problem is, people can sit on it because his fastball is 88 and his other stuff is meh.
|
12:51 |

Gun to your head: Bud Light, Miller Lite, or Coors Light? |
12:51 |
: Coors.

12:51 |
I will have to stop swaddling my son at night soon. Help?! |
12:51 |
: Can he roll over? Once he can roll over, put him to bed on his stomach. They sleep so much better then.
|
12:52 |
Should I sit Iwakuma at Texas tomorrow? |
12:52 |
: Oh. yeah. I think I might. (Remembers to sit him in that league)
|
12:52 |
I’m still waiting for Mujica to blow up cause he uses his split so often |
12:52 |
: Me too, but damn. How long we going to wait.
|
12:52 |
Eno, when trading for the stretch run, do you generally target offensive players or pitchers as rentals? I know it is dependent on your specific holes and who is available but wondered if you had any insight. |
12:53 |
: If you’re going to get a pitcher, look at the schedule and try to actually project his matchups and make sure he has nice games coming up.
|
12:53 |
While it is extremely early on, do the elvis andrus and carl crawford contracts show there is a general overvaluing of speedy, defense first players? |
12:53 |
: I don’t think so. Crawford was an elite defender in the corner OF, so that’s completely different
|
12:53 |
What do expect from Appel when he debuts next season? I’ve recently become infatuated with his scouting reports and want some confirmation that I’m not inappropriately obsessed. |
12:54 |
: The changeup got better last year at Stanford. So now he’s going to sit 93/94, get Ks with the slurve, and get GBs and stop platoon splits with the change. I like him better now than I did last year, and he’s close. I wish he wasn’t in the AL, but I think he can be a fantasy #2 from the get-go.
|
12:55 |
If Gregory Polanco comes up and say puts up a .250/.350/350 line, is that better than Lambo/Presley/tabata/snider? Should the Pirates do it? |
12:55 |
: I think that’s a bit too familiar for that group. Obv he has the upside, but they’re probably doing right thing in calling up the lower-ceiling Lambo and not harming Polanco progression.
|
12:56 |
has there ever been a player to put up back to back 10 WAR seasons and not win an mvp in either? |
12:56 |
: I would guess no, but I’ll take a look later!
|
12:56 |
Should we be any less excited about Profar given his first season? |
12:56 |
: No, not really. Pretty decent for his age, actually.
|
12:56 |
Ooooh–what’s your scotch of choice if given a reasonable budge of, say, $65/L? |
12:56 |
: Laphroig.
|
12:57 |
Ryan Flaherty and Mike Baxter also went to Vandy |
12:57 |
: Is that a point in favor or against.
|
12:57 |
Wine is so much better than beer. Why are so many people from between the coasts so clueless in this regard? |
12:57 |
: I can’t really do wine. I love Pinot Noirs and South American Cabs and Cotes du Rhones, but I get heartburn.
|
12:58 |
I think I’m a pretty smart guy, but I just don’t get the waivers process. Can someone explain it graphically, plz/thx? |
12:58 |
: Any traded asset has to go unclaimed by all the teams that have worse records than the two trading partners. Did that help?
|
12:58 |
The most important question of the day, what beer will be reviewed next on BeerGraphs? |
12:59 |
: Little birdy told me Double Jack is coming up in an hour or two.
|
12:59 |
for some reason i read “hitting force” as “hitting face”. immediate conclusion: gyorko far more likely to evolve a hitting face than rendon. i do not know why i feel this way |
12:59 |
Underrated brewery = Schlafly. |
12:59 |
Because Kolsches are flavourless swill. |
12:59 |
Do you think the Blue Jays will be a contender next season? Perhaps they just need more time to gel? |
12:59 |
: Need more pitching.
|
12:59 |
People misunderestimate how much of a tossup 7-game series are by their very nature, right? |
1:00 |
: Get me into the postseason and I’m happy with my lotto ticket.
|
1:00 |
Starling Marte and Puig are starting to show plate discipline and that makes me happy. |
1:00 |
: Are people noticing Puig’s walks? I hope so.
|
1:00 |
Any plans for looking at replacement beers for the South? Pretty WC oriented. |
1:00 |
: I’ll do a bunch of South stuff soon.
|
1:00 |
Do you believe Lambo is worth owning for the rest of 2013 or 2014? |
1:01 |
: I dunno. too many ks, worries me a bit.
|
1:01 |
Thoughts on Lewis Brinson? Ks are scary, but secondary numbers look legit |
1:01 |
: I want to see his Double-A K rate. I do own him in a couple dynasties just in case.

Verlander’s fastball is back up. Can still hit triple digits. |
1:03 |
Uggla’s line when he comes back from Lasik? |
1:03 |
: Similar. maybe a tiny rise in contact rate? badumching
|
1:03 |
Metboy, do the Mets make a play for David Price this winter? They would seem to have enough pieces now. If not, is there any other impact piece they can/will target? |
1:03 |
: I think it’s more likely they get in on Ellsbury and Choo. Maybe they get Choo.
|
1:04 |
are you wearing pants right now, and if so WHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?!?!?!?!?!?! |
1:04 |
: yes because they aren’t pants, they are pajamas
|
1:04 |
How bad is Chris Perez as a pitcher? I keep having this argument over and over with my friend. He just keeps quoting how many saves he has. But that’s like Wins, who cares? His walks and hits are TERRIBLE! |
1:04 |
: He has had one year where he had above-average anything in the following categories: K%, BB%, GB%.
|
1:04 |
Gyorko or Brad Miller ROS? |
1:05 |
: Ooh they are right there. If position doesn’t matter… man. Uh. Let me look real quick. cheating. Miller. He’s stealing a bit more.
|
1:06 |
Are you worried about Doug Fister? He’s gone from a must start to “he’s starting against the White Sox, I’ll start him” to “He just blew up vs. the worst team in the AL” |
1:06 |
: A little. He has inconsistent release points too.
|
1:06 |
: He has showed up on the injury predictor fwiw.
|
1:06 |
Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA or Bell’s Two-Hearted IPA? |
1:06 |
: Bell’s is so smooth. I’d rather have 90 minute on colder nights, but Bell’s most of the time.
|
1:07 |
I liked it better when Maxamuz posted Duda comments and lightning gifs. |
1:07 |
: This’ll start a feud.
|
1:07 |
We didn’t swaddle either of our girls. They hated it, told us so and we bailed. |
1:07 |
I just joined a generic fantasy football league so I can do a draft. I don’t even care for football and know nothing, but I’m going to see if my superior baseball intellect can prove advantageous in the gridiron game. |
1:07 |
: Good luck figuring out football’s advanced stats.
|
1:07 |
Brett Lawrie: Is this, roughly, what healthy Brett Lawrie looks like and I should be excited or is the regression hammer looming? Also, where the dingers? |
1:08 |
: I’m happy that he started striking out less. Homers will come. My back of envelope for next year is something like .280 20/20
|
1:08 |
![]() Are you a Huey Lewis and the News fan? I am. |
1:08 |
: This is not a man you want to feud with.

1:08 |
: dang
|
1:08 |
Is Gerritt Cole going to be an ace as early as next season? |
1:09 |
: I think the Ks will start coming. He’s going to be a nice mid-round pick next year.
|
1:09 |
Polanco still figuring out AA – 277 .369 .418 .787 Lambo’s MLEs look better than his do right now. Not ready. |

Wine sucks. Get out. |
1:09 |
Wine is not better than beer, just as beer is not better than wine. It’s not a game! Both are to be enjoyed as they are and both are great with food. It’s the Trout vs Cabrera of beverages! |
1:10 |
Highland Park 12 is the single best deal in alcohol. Fantastic dram at a fantastic price. |
1:10 |
3 Scotch: Balvenie is my recommendation for a smooth taste; you get great quality for price point and it is not as polarizing as Laphroig can be because of its super strong taste. |
1:10 |
re: Scotch, big fan of Auchentoschan. so darn smooth and tasty |
1:10 |
Read that stats sorts say 40% of the time the inferior team will win a best-of-seven. Just yesterday. Some myth of competitive balance. |
1:10 |
: Well, I do think that baseball is reasonably balanced.
|
1:11 |
Should I be selling high on Hanley right now? As in, I can get Hosmer for him. |
1:11 |
: Eh. I like Hosmer enough, but that’s not selling high.
|
1:11 |
Going to San Diego in October. What breweries should I check out? |
1:11 |
: Stone, AleSmith, Green Flash, and Ballast Point Homebrew Mart are all within a few minutes of each other. Alpine is good but far away.
|
1:11 |
Is Chris Carter the new Mark Reynolds? |
1:11 |
: Well done.

1:12 |
brett wallace or arenado ROS? |
1:12 |

1:14 |
My favorite Maxamuz comment was a comparison between Duda and Bogaerts he made in a Stephania Bell injury chat. |
1:14 |
Why doesn’t LASIK receive the negative publicity of PEDs? They are both enhancing the body’s performance beyond what is naturally occuring. |
1:14 |
: Not as many bad health implications or problems rec’ing to children I guess.
|
1:14 |
My staff includes Fernandez, Teheran and Miller. How desperate am I going to be for pitching in September. Any of these guys going to be around? |
1:15 |
: Actually, I looked at Miller and I think he can go 180. That gives him ten starts, and I could only count eight left in the season. I bet he only misses a start or two at most.
|
1:15 |
Anibal looking healthy now and dominant at times. Can he be a top 15 SP for the stretch? |
1:15 |
: sure
|
1:15 |
Drinking scotch is like only drinking import beers. Awesome American bourbons and ryes are everywhere. Be a patriot you commie scum! |
1:15 |
: I like Bulleit and Makers Mark?

1:15 |
Alfonso Sorano: 1. Pinstipes; 2. Joke Stadium; 3. Profit. |
1:15 |
May need a closer if Grilli comes back. Is this the right rank Betancourt, Hawkins, de la Rosa, Putz, Frieri, Strop, Fields? |
1:16 |
: yes
|
1:16 |
So you a believer in Arenado? Why? |
1:17 |
: Great contact rate, BABIP potential still there. I think he’s a .280/20 guy true talent already. (with a little help from home park). Plus, the comparisons were Moose and A-Rod…
|
1:17 |
Is Tommy Milone coming back? |
1:17 |
: yes
|
1:17 |
Is Hosmer doing anything different? My quick look-in says no. Maybe he is just that 280ish, 20 homer guy with some steals. Maybe we should just accept that. I mean, how can he hit more than 20 homers when he has like a 22% flyball rate? |
1:17 |
: exactly.
|
1:17 |
I keep an anti-Eno hot dog gun on hand just in case. You’ve been warned. |
1:18 |
o.co press box hot dogs… yesterday was the first time I smelled hot dog and didn’t retch a bit.
: Ever since those |

My girlfriend works the taproom at Ballast Point. I hate Sculpin. Is it within her rights to break up with me? |

1:18 |
: I’m saying they will spend some money on a position player this year.

Vernon Wells: 1. Pinstripes; 2. Joke Stadium; 3. Vernon Wells |
1:19 |
: oops. doesn’t always work.
|
1:19 |
Worst case scenario, Arenado is Garrett Atkins. Who wouldn’t want to be able to platoon a guy based on schedule? |
1:19 |
: better than trying to figure when A-Rod’s hips allow him into the lineup.
|
1:19 |
Does Alex Wood lose his spot when Maholm comes back? |
1:19 |
: Probably.
|
1:20 |
WAFFLE ME! |
1:20 |
: IM PRESSING THE BUTTON
|
1:20 |
Do we know what Jose Fernandez’s innings limit is this year? I’ve seen references to him being limited, but not what the actual limit is. |
1:21 |
: He had 140 or so IP last year, and this year. Usually you can add about 20%, maybe 30%.
|
1:21 |
Is Jim Johnson in danger of losing his job, who is next in line? |
1:21 |
: K-Rod, but JJ survived worse before.

1:21 |
If you had to choose right now: Trout or Miggy, to keep for life (fantasy not reality), who would you take? |
1:21 |
: Trout because of age and defense. I belive in his D.
|
1:21 |
I guess I’m eating waffles today. I honestly don’t have many options. |
1:22 |
: always the best option. unless you have pancakes.
|
1:22 |
Ignore Bruce Chen? (it’s getting harder and harder) |
1:22 |
: I think you can do it. Watch him against Detroit (don’t put him in your lineup)
|
1:22 |
will byrd finish ROS in line with stats so far? |
1:23 |
: No, I don’t believe in his power. I know he’s hitting more fly balls. But I don’t believe in his power.
|
1:23 |
Is Fernandez a top 5 pitcher next season? |
1:23 |
: Well, that’s elite territory. Top 12 I can believe.
|
1:23 |
Price to Cubs! Yeesh. I agree they will be very active this winter and aren’t as far away as many people think.. Theo/Hoyer have done a really good job there… the sort of job I was hoping Alderson would be doing in NY. I actually thing they could get Stanton if they were willing to deal Baez. I see them in on Stanton or Price. And I think they’ll also be active on Ellsbury. M’s or Cubs on Jacoby. Mets won’t be high bidder there. |
1:23 |
: Cubs are in better financial position than Mets.
|
1:23 |
My girlfriend prefers frozen waffles over frozen pancakes it seems, yet at a diner, she orders pancakes over waffles…What the F? |
1:23 |
: This makes complete sense to me.
|
1:23 |
Will Strop close this season? |
1:24 |
: Yes, Gregg’s K-BB ratio is falling apart.
|
1:24 |
Trade Cliff Lee and Jansen for Yu? |
1:24 |
: Doubt it’s worth it on the small schedule left for SPs.
|
1:24 |
Hosmer could be a Votto-type 1B though, right? More doubles and less HRs. |
1:25 |
: I could believe this if he had a better gb/fb split.
|
1:25 |
Who gets the better contract – Lincecum or Lester? Dollar Amount? |
1:25 |
: Lester. Lincecum’s last three years aren’t going to get people lining up. An NL team might love Lester.
|
1:25 |
Betancourt coming back Saturday, he taking the job back immediately? |
1:26 |
: No. Rox looking to future and Brothers doing fine. Some people think that Bro’s extra ER in closer role make a big difference, though, and the Rox do have a mutual option on Betancourt that they may want to evaluate with him in the role.
|
1:26 |
Chen, H Alvarez or Joe Kelly? (Finds pitching under a rock) |
1:26 |

Per the question earlier about B2B 10+ WAR seasons and no MVP, Ted Williams posted 10.6 in 41/42 and won no MVP. That’s the only one I believe since 1931 when the MVP came out. |

1:27 |
: 80% of Bacon is awesome.

I am behind in steals in my league and NO ONE is available on the wire. Do you put stock in Villar as a reliable Base stealer? |
1:27 |
: Sure, if you can handle the bad batting average.

1:27 |
American bacon is better than any other type of bacon in the world. |
1:28 |
: Having lived in London, Germany, Japan and Jamaica, I agree.
|
1:28 |
What does Zack Wheeler do next season? |
1:28 |
: Better than this season, but not a fantasy ace.
|
1:28 |
Why is Dan Straily’s swinging strike rate so high (>11%) but strikeout rate so low ( |
1:29 |
: I think he’s still figuring out how to best sequence things. Also, he told me that before the Toronto start, he was fiddling with his changeup grip again and thinks that his finger was iike a CM off ideal placing. Seriously. The Changeup did look great in Toronto.
|
1:29 |
Should I feel weird about eating guanciale? I do every time but it’s delicious. |
1:29 |

Dynasty league. had pitching to spare (Minor, Fernandez, Teheran, Gausman, Zimmer, Salazar) and no punch. Traded my Harvey for Stanton. thoughts? |

1:30 |
Are you saying football’s advanced stats are hard to understand? (I really don’t know. What’s the deal?) |
1:31 |
: yes, and also I haven’t seen as much ‘when does this become reliable’ work in other sports.
|
1:31 |
Let’s pretend: What happens if A-Rod announces that he’s the first openly open homosexual MLB player? MLB PLAYERS UNION EXPLODES? |
1:31 |
: No but fewer people come out to defend him than did for Jason Collins.
|
1:31 |
Is Mejia’s swinging strike rate for this year (12%) a mirage (6% before)? |
1:31 |
: He has a new slider. Some inconsistency in the mechanics. Definitely more interesting these days.
|
1:31 |
Yep, the cheeks. Also, grouper (fish) cheeks are very good. |
1:32 |
: I once ate the tail and the eye ball at a pig roast, and the guy cutting up the pig rewarded me with cheeks. I was in heaven.
|
1:32 |
Am I sitting Loshe tonight vs the Reds? |
1:32 |
: I would. Good lineup in MIlwaukee.
|
1:32 |
How do you prepare for H2H playoffs? I got a great shot at a bye week first round? Start targeting weaknesses of teams you’ll play now? |
1:32 |
: Just looking at your pitching schedules those weeks.
|
1:33 |
im in a standard 5×5 league that is having a debate about removing the wins category. i suggested using qs instead, but that is getting a lot of backlash since people think it just adds more value to era. the only other suggestion was innings pitched. what do you think? |
1:33 |
: I think QS is marginally better than wins. I don’t like IP. Wins add value to ERA, plus team strength and schedule randomness.
|
1:33 |
Halibut cheeks were the best part of fishing in Alaska. |
1:34 |

1:35 |
Jimmy beans… our league now has Holds, Saves, WHIP, ERA & QS’s, the latter being the latest change from Wins. I love playing in this league now, more than ever. Holds and QS’s rule! |
1:35 |
Will Ryan Ludwick be worth a spot next year in a 14 team, mixed league, 5 OF team? |
1:35 |
: Not so much that you’d keep him for that chance.
|
1:36 |
Decisions = W + QS – L = far better roto category |
1:36 |
: so you get two ‘points’ for a win that’s also a qs? mmmm.
