Eno Sarris: Dragged their feet on some decisions, got some bad returns on the players they traded last year, but I find the pitchers they got very interesting. Yeah, they aren’t working out except DeSclafani, but that’s pitchers, man.

Eric: Did Lewis Brinson’s outlook improve in MIL? When do you think he’ll be up?

Eno Sarris: Fewer roadblocks now. He just needs to put together that awesome power with the new strikeout rate and stay healthy.

this is not my real name: When you and Paul initially discussed Gurriel, you were pretty low on him–though I think you might have been reading incorrect stats. Do you still feel the same way about him. Asking because he is now available in the Yahoo! database and trying to decide if I should blow the rest of my FAAB on him.

Eno Sarris: I was looking at the wrong Gurriel! And with the way Bregman is playing, I think he can take the job. His actual translation is 268 .307 .435, which is decent but probably not worth dropping your whole FAAB on.

Mike: T/F – Mookie Betts is the second best OF in baseball.

Eric: Musgrove looked great. What caliber fantasy starter do you envision him being?

Eno Sarris: I’m a little worried that people get better at him the more they see his funky stuff. He doesn’t have a great comp. Ironically, he looks a little bit like a Mengden with better command and less deception based on delivery, but similarly deceptive stuff. I think he’ll be a fantasy 3 or so.

Bork: John Gibbons said he had a “butt feeling” when he decided to have Biagini pitch to Altuve. Can you please create a stat that corresponds to butt feelings?

Eno Sarris: Well, there is a ‘butt’ saying for when things don’t work out at least.

Jack: The strikeouts have disappeared, and he’s up against an innings limit, but he’s been successful at avoiding giving up runs. Going into next year, Michael Fulmer is a top ______ pitcher.

Eno Sarris: 20? 25?

Ethan: This trade went down in my league and I don’t think it’s fair. Harper for Taijuan Walker and Yasmany Tomas. On the face of it, does that seem uneven? Commish can only veto if there is collusion and that will be hard to prove. Maybe the one owner is an idiot.

Eno Sarris: I think he’s still trying to figure out the movement out of his new slot.

Eno Sarris: Yes.

Phantom of the Chakras: Who is Trevor Bauer and why do I still like him after all he’s done to me? I feel like a battered spouse here…

Eno Sarris: It’s hard for him to keep command as his stuff changes, I guess. He’s even said that to me. Suddenly he’s got the same numbers as ever.

Gest: Robbie Ray – the Ks jump out at you, and make me want to believe, but he also gets squared up so dang much. Is there a reason for this or do you think he can tame his batted ball profile in the future?

Eno Sarris: Have to think lack of a third pitch matters here. Also command isn’t great. It’s plus velocity, plus fastball, plus slider, minus everything else.

Bryce Mac: With Story out, who do you see providing the most value in 5×5 roto at SS: Arcia, Mondesi, Owings, Gregorius, Peralta?

Eno Sarris: I’d take a shot at Arcia, but Peralta has highest floor if you’re in the top two/three.

Erik: How much will the Phillies inactivity at the deadline hurt them? They looked poised to head up towards .500 next year and be real contenders in 2018. Does this alter the timeline at all?

Eno Sarris: Jeanmar Gomez probably would have gotten them a better return than Jeremy Hellickson, which is super weird to me. They probably just didn’t get a great offer for Hellickson and figured maybe they can extend him to be a back end guy.

Mr. Met: You know we have some paranoid fans when they’re already comparing Jay Bruce to Jason Bay.

Eno Sarris: It’s been a poor start, but Bruce is a real power source.

Gordo: Can you advise me on Jackie Bradley’s keeper value?
Over the last calendar year JBJ is 13th in wOBA. Would you consider him established? I still struggle to view him as a top hitter (and projections aren’t buying his recent star level play).

Eno Sarris: I still can’t imagine this power will keep up. Never really showed this sort of power in the minors.

Steve: Does the Orioles’ best pitcher really have 4 career starts?

Eno Sarris: Bundy so good.

Chris: Which Braves pitching prospects stand out the most to you? Are any front-of-the-rotation starters, or did they collect a bunch of innings eaters?

Eno Sarris: I don’t see the front of rotation guy yet.

Alex: Any recs for a fruit wheat/hef in so cal area? Not really my preference so not familiar with many

Cody: Is it time to give up on Tyson Ross for this year? I’ve been offered Steven Wright & Thornburg for him in dynasty H2H pts. Wright’s recent starts are kinda scary but I have to take this right? I’m trying to win the Championship.

Eno Sarris: Just saw a report that he could maybe throw 4-6 starts… that seems like not much to keep holding on to.

rustydude: My league mates have given up on Smyly. I put in a waiver claim. What do you expect ROS in a QS league?

Eno Sarris: I’m thinking the Depth Charts projection. 3.69 ERA, 1.2 WHIP, 1.25 HR/9.

Jim Lonborg: I’ve seen some work that tries to track 3B coaches by runs scored against running ability of men on base. It’s not consistent year to year–too much randomness. I suspect much depends on whether players trust a coach–if they start ignoring him, he’s got to go.

Eno Sarris: They definitely ignore sometimes, and that confounds!

davey: Odds deGrom can win the NL Cy Young?

Eno Sarris: Not bad.

Eric: You’ve been great help to me with trades this year: I just traded Melancon (11th round keeper) and Pence (can’t keep) for Piscotty (16th round keeper) and Wheeler (20th round) and picked up Diaz w FAAB. Did I do ok? Is Piscotty worth keeping? I never seem to hear people talk about him.

Eno Sarris: Piscotty may have overperformed his exit velocity so far, but he’s proven himself to be defensively versatile with power and plate coverage. I think you did really well, particularly with the Diaz pickup.

Q-Ball: What player are you most surprised did NOT change hands during the trade deadline?

Eno Sarris: Hellickson, J Gomez, I guess that’s about it.

Eno Sarris: That sounds dirty. He told me he’s gotten better on Ks by anticipating better, which tells me that his K rate will jump big in the big leagues, where pitchers will change it up on him. I’d give him a high bust rate, even though I like his power.

Eno Sarris: Karns gets another shot at starting after DL stint, I think, so it’s not writ yet.

Eno Sarris: Seager, Mazara, Contreras, Polanco….. wait and see if Pollock plays some late this year.

Eno Sarris: Strong matchups play and today was a good matchup.

Domingo Santana Sr.: I still believe in Domingo Santana as legit NL only contributor for 2017. Is that because i’m his father?

Eno Sarris: I believe in him too. He’s made some adjustments to his swing rates, and if he can get a little loft — not crazy since he’s been hurt this year and will have the offseason to heal — he could regain that power stroke with some SBs. Lovely bench play / deep dynasty acquisition right now.

JD15: Is there a quantifiable value for how many pitches a player sees per at bat? Seeing a lot of pitches definitely affects the game in a big way because it can cause more bullpen use. Is it calculated into any more comprehensive stats like WAR?

Eno Sarris: It helps you BB more, and is related to power, but you also K more. Not directly measured and included in anything, but has implications everywhere.

EvanC: Does Joey Votto’s approach increase the likelihood that he can remain effective well into his 30s?

Eno Sarris: We did an interview about this and the research was surprisingly vague. I think his walk rate will give him value even as things fall apart, but tools also help you age well.

Avi: Does a DL Stint for Cespedes, if it took a month, increase the odds of him NOT opting out?

Eno Sarris: hey! maybe. he’s sorta borderline right now.

Steve: Jon Niese blamed defensive shifts for him sucking in Pittsburgh. Does this mean that Jeff Locke is actually better than Kershaw but those darned shifts are holding him back?

Eno Sarris: Niese doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

Paul: Is it better to send out a league-wide email asking if people are interested in trading or is it better to individually email teams asking to trade? I’m in a new league and don’t want to piss people off.

Eno Sarris: Individually cater to teams. Say, hey, i noticed you might need X and I have it. Trade blocks and posts don’t move needle much.

Eno Sarris: Probably find that visual person. Everyone will respond better to a pitch with pictures.

eric: Robbie Ray is a reliever, not a starter. Every start it’s 3-5 good innings where you think he looks like he’s in command and then it’s that one inning with 2 PA where he can’t put a guy away and puts them on and gives up a 3 run bomb. He has the stuff to be really good in the pen – his 94 starting would be 96 in the pen and he’d be death on lefties and capable against righties.

Eno Sarris: This might be true. The running joke is that I’ve thought this and people have been telling me I’m wrong and pretending they are Ray himself. If you don’t have a third pitch, you need to have really good command.

Mike: How worthwhile is a trip to the winter meetings/job fair stuff for someone who just graduated and wants to get into baseball in some capacity?

Eno Sarris: It’s so frigging crowded. I think I’d take a job that increases the skills that you would use to get in baseball, or a job around baseball (think writing, coaching, anything sorta baseball) and start making contacts. Going in blind puts you in the meat grinder.

Matt: If I were to tell you that Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is my favorite beer, how would you respond?

Eno Sarris: Hello, college me!

Dougie: 12 team redraft standard, pick one to cut. J Upton, Kepler, K Davis, David Dahl.

Eno Sarris: Oh lord, even by projections at this point it’s pointing towards Upton. He’s projected at .260 9 (HR+SB), and Davis can beat that, Dahl can beat it (if he steals), Kepler should have a better BA. Otherwise it’s Dahl, but you should at least shop him in a two for one first.

Matthew: Eno, which 2 of these 3 would you start tomorrow; Hellickson @ SD, Taillon vs CIN, or Santana @ TB?

Eno Sarris: Taillon.

Eno Sarris: Velocity up too. I like what I see. Commanding the curve for called strikes some when not getting whiffs. Want to see more changes, but movement solid.

The Oriole Bird: As an Orioles fan, I kind of hate that the Yankees made all the right moves during the trade dealine. But it was also kind of fun to watch, having seen them do virtually nothing but outspend for the past 20 years or so.

Eno Sarris: They did really well. Finally bit the bullet and sold.

jaysfan: What to make of sonny gray? velocity, k and bb rates seem normal, but huge hr/fb spike can’t be fluke if hard hit rate is so high too, right?

Eno Sarris: Lost command of the breaking ball and can’t morph it into two pitches. More predictable, can’t bury it when he needs to. Injury related I’d bet.

Eno Sarris: Well if you have an all-time legendary pitch, yes, you shold throw it more.

Jack: Does Taijuan Walker have three plus pitches?

Eno Sarris: Actually, not by results, not this year. The split is below average, strangely. Curve is too.

Naquin/Kepler are recent success stories. M. Carpenter in St. Louis, is now one of the better power hitters in baseball, showed little in the minors. It’s an approach for these guys. If you have good hands, bat speed, you can hit HR”s.

Eno Sarris: Not a difference maker, but for people looking for non-crappy innings from the back end of their rotation, Anderson is usually good for about 40 innings a season. Ryu’s a shoulder, those are really tricky. Not saying back injuries suck, but Anderson is pitching now.
