Jonathan Schoop had a pretty good debut last night. Does he project as an above average hitter? Someone who could start at 2B full time next year?

Eno Sarris: Start will probably over-rate him. I see about league average power and strikeouts, not much patience or speed. .250/15/5 might make him the starter at second, but not a great fantasy play.

Have been holding onto Fister with hope they might give him 1 more tune up start @ Mia on Sunday so he doesn’t have to sit 2 wks before his playoff start, while giving Porcello an appearance or 2 out of the pen since that’s where he’ll be in the playoffs. Would make sense to me but Porcello is still listed as the probable…

Eno Sarris: Nothing is for sure at this point. I think less likely Fister pitches again then Porcello makes his start though.

Eno Sarris: 30ish? Can’t go to the 50/60 of the ‘first round types.’ Maybe as much as 40 if your team is competitive.

Hi Eno!! I listen to your podcast with Mike Podhorzer all the time. This was my first year playing fantasy baseball and you guys helped me a lot! I nearly made the final (lost by one R) and am now in a matchup for 3rd place in our league. Anyways, I’m in a 5×5 12-team H2H format mixed league where we’re allowed 4 hitting keepers. I have 3 of my keepers determined at SS, LF, & CF, but can’t decide who my 4th keeper should be. between eric hosmer, will venable, wilson ramos, pablo sandoval, and xander bogaerts, who should i keep? My 3 other keepers are all 5-tool players, so I probably don’t need steals as badly as the rest of my league. FYI we can keep players for a maximum of 6 years, and we are not in auction format. Thanks for all your help!

Eno Sarris: Venable is old, so he’s out. Wilson Ramos seems replaceable, I don’t believe in quite this much power. So, Pablo for a rebound or betting on the future in Bogaerts. I actually think Xander, even without a guarantee at a job right now, might be worth this risk.

Eno Sarris: By the 16th round I usually like to have my starting lineup in place. Maybe you can leave util (or util x 2) open for the draft.

Eno Sarris: Too much for me. ISO already calming down at 30. Could easily return to meh walk rate, meh defense as the power erodes.

If you’re the Nats, what’s your #1 off-season priority?

Eno Sarris: I think this is a fascinating question. It’s not obvious what went wrong. I like their top three pitchers. I like their lineup for the most part. They could move Rendon to third, Zimm to first, make LaRoche a backup or send him packing, then they need a defense-first second baseman (or maybe Espy becomes an option with Rendon’s stepping forward). Mostly I think they need depth. More pitching. A number four, maybe even a number five that they like. Roark can five or six. Spend around the edges, improve depth.

James Paxton next season. Have much value?

Eno Sarris: So I guess the velocity drop was mostly because of his knee problem, because he’s back up to the mid-nineties and looks nice. Problem is, his change is no good. So he’s fastball/curveball. But it’s a nice fastball, looks like a good curve, and if he can show-me change, he’ll be a valuable player. One that you can start all the time at home, most of the time on the road, and use in the middle of any fantasy rotation. Doubt he’s a front-liner unless the change takes a step forward.

Eno Sarris: More power. Better plate discipline, fewer strikeouts. Unsure about the speed. Could see .275/15/10 if he had a full season. Longer term, more upside in power.

Eno Sarris: I think it was right for them to give him some time out in the field, although it may have hurt them a bit wrt to this season. Can Freese get back his mojo in a part time? Will Wong get as much PT in the playoffs? Wong is better than this though.

Eno Sarris: Gotta think Harvey misses all or most of next year. You’re obviously selling low, but by the time this deal hurts, if it does, you’ll have gotten at least a half season out of Heyward.

Eno Sarris: Rios. Only one with a period. I might try to trade Cuddyer plus Ortiz if anyone is looking at a worse group on the fringe of their keeper list. Cespedes has no trade value, but I think he can .265/25/10 next year. Maybe even more power.

Eno Sarris: I don’t see it when I watch him. The screwball is mediocre. The change is okay. Bad control. Homeritis. Not pitching in a great place for his skills.

Where are you drafting Kemp next year? Are you confident that he can put up stats to meet that value? Do you advise trading him in the offseason?

Eno Sarris: He strikes out too much. My back of the beer coaster projection is .270/25/15. Better than Cespedes, but not much better. Looks like a third-rounder or so, I could push it to second round if I thought he looked healthy this postseason. Shoulder injury mucking up projections. If he gets full healthy, can hit 30 again.

So Eno, what’s your 2013 Fantasy record look like for all your leagues? Happy, disappointed?

Eno Sarris: Gonna win three leagues I think. Top three in a couple more. Good year. I thought it was going to be better but some of my teams slowed down.

Eno Sarris: One thing I did this year that I can alter a bit next year. In the past I’ve been very reticent to trade. I wanted to win each trade. This year, I said screw it and made more trades. I lost some. Maybe you could say I lost some badly. BUT! If I move the pendulum just a bit more back to not trading, but keep some of that gusto, I feel optimistic I’ll find a good balance. It’s hard to trade.

Eno Sarris: That’s fine. I’d have four pitchers by the 14th round, and I’d be happy with that group.

Asking since we don’t have access to it, but do teams have access to better minor-league plate discipline data (like Oswing)? If not, wouldn’t it be worth teams hiring someone that could do that for them- to have an advantage in player information?

Eno Sarris: They might in their own parks. There’s probably more out there in that arena that we don’t know about. I’ve been told that even the Giants have their own cameras around the field that are not PITCHf/x or FIELDf/x.

Eno Sarris: That’s pretty deep. I might like Betts and Seager best once you consider how their major league teams look.

Eno Sarris: Obviously Pedroia isn’t going anywhere, but the Red Sox could trade Betts pretty easily. Rangers haven’t been trading guys like Odor and have a bit of a glut going. Otherwise I’d have Odor over Betts.

Eno Sarris: He’s got a bit of a violent swing. And a lot of swinging strikes. I think he could push it down closer to 20%, but thinking now that he won’t be a 16-18% guy.

Eno Sarris: For sure. They’ll be giving everyone a month or two to prove themselves, just as they did this year. By next year they might have three or four regulars they can count on. Singleton could be one. He’s probably better than Brett Wallace, Marc Krauss, the list goes on.

He betrayed us this year by putting up better walk rates, K rates, power, average, and speed as the season went along last year. Primed for a 30-20-.290 type breakout. What hapend?

Eno Sarris: We should have been looking more at the swinging strike rate. But no reason for a .274 BABIP either.

Eno Sarris: Well, a slight fly ball tendency. But mostly they lauded his ability to make adjustments last year, so why can’t he do it again.

Eno Sarris: Yeah, bigger point is right: bench bats mostly useless. I use those spots for upside plays.

I have found especially in my keepers/dynasties that I am fine with “losing” a trade so long as I make sure to trade with the bottom dwellers and also-rans. You’re helping the league and greasing the wheels for future deals with the teams selling assets.

Which of the following starters do I bench to protect the ratio lead while not having W stolen? Strasburg (v.Corbin), McCarthy and Haren (against each other) and Morton (v.Arroyo)

Eno Sarris: With a four-win lead, I think you sit all of them except Stras. He’s not going to get five wins. If he gets four, you have a shot at still getting one. I think he gets two or three at most. Morton seems riskiest. You could try to start McC and Haren both and hope for a close game and you get the win.

Eno Sarris: contact % is almost always a good thing, at least for OBP. Scutaro would not be a ball player without that elite skill. But making your bank on O-contact is iffy. (Pablo, Josh Hamilton, Vlad). Because o-contact is the skill that drops off the earliest and the fastest. I think it takes a lot of fine-twitch athleticism to hit a fastball at your toes out of the park.

Why does everyone like Nova and Erlin today? Erlin’s SS% is low compared to his strikeouts and his walk rate makes him a poor K-BB. Goldy, Hill, Davidson, and other RHBs are going to tear him up (LHP). Nova was good for what 1 start? He goes against the completely platooned Rays.
