Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 9/26/13
11:45 |
: I’ll be here at the top of the hour!
|
12:00 |
I’ll top your hour! |
12:00 |
: hmm feisty
|
12:00 |
We’re not happy til we’re running away |
12:00 |
Best Brown Ale you’ve had recently? |
12:00 |
: Can’t remember anything but Moose Drool and Turbodog. I’ll keep thinking.
|
12:01 |
Eno, do you think any star player will ever “risk” millions to go for the greater reward associated with year to year contracts? I suppose he can buy his own insurance with the premium in salary he gets each year for selling himself to the highest bidder. |
12:01 |
: Doubt it, not when they can get the multi year. Lincecum obviously tried it, but arbitration was right up his ally.
|
12:02 |
: Breaking news! Someone commented on the chat *as the chat is proceeding*. Comment looks okay though.
|
12:02 |
Start Cahill today @ SD? I am up big in ERA and WHIP but QS and Ks are getting closer. |
12:03 |
: Sure. I don’t think you’re risking much .. oh it’s a day game? Still, it’s late in the season. Check the weather I guess.
|
12:03 |
Jonathan Schoop had a pretty good debut last night. Does he project as an above average hitter? Someone who could start at 2B full time next year? |
12:04 |
: Start will probably over-rate him. I see about league average power and strikeouts, not much patience or speed. .250/15/5 might make him the starter at second, but not a great fantasy play.
|
12:04 |
Fitting the Royals playoff dreams ended against eh M’s? |
12:05 |
: Why fitting? Because they’re both sad, sad stories? I’m just happy my James Paxton call yesterday worked out so gloriously.
|
12:05 |
Still haven’t found the Green Bullet yet, really want to try it. When people send you stuff for beergraphs, do you send beer back in return, or is it just a donation type thing? |
12:05 |
: Usually trade, but in a few lucky circumstances, I’ve been told not to worry about sending anything back. Oh, thank your for that heady topper you glorious glorious reader.
|
12:06 |
Who’s the more useless upcoming FA SP? Westbrook or Bedard? |
12:06 |
: Bedard might be better per IP, but Westy looks like the innings gobbler someone might need at SP5.
|
12:06 |
Think Porcello is making the start tmrw for sure? Have been holding onto Fister with hope they might give him 1 more tune up start @ Mia on Sunday so he doesn’t have to sit 2 wks before his playoff start, while giving Porcello an appearance or 2 out of the pen since that’s where he’ll be in the playoffs. Would make sense to me but Porcello is still listed as the probable… |
12:07 |
: Nothing is for sure at this point. I think less likely Fister pitches again then Porcello makes his start though.
|
12:07 |
Hi Eno! I wrote a Roto-league tale of woe in the comments and wanted you to both pity me, and recommend a beer for a bitter, broken winner. |
12:08 |
: See I told you someone wrote a comment, and it was good. Hah. In California, Aroma Coma will put you in the coma to ignore you pain. On the east coast, might have to go to Dogfish Head’s 90 minute.
|
12:08 |
Drank a Dupont Monks Stout last night. A really nice dry stout with a nice abv of about 5%. Really easy to drink. |
12:08 |
Odds there will be even ONE beer at Citi Field tomorrow for ‘Oktoberfest’ that you can’t get normally? 10%? Less? At least I get a Mets boot. |
12:08 |
Listening to Yo La Tengo and dreaming of David Wright home runs. |
12:08 |
: that’s the spirit
|
12:09 |
What’s your gut valuation of Matt Kemp in Ottoneu 5×5 for 2014? I have no idea. |
12:09 |
: 30ish? Can’t go to the 50/60 of the ‘first round types.’ Maybe as much as 40 if your team is competitive.
|
12:10 |
Gomez was a jerk but the Braves are REALLY easy to egg on in that fashion. |
12:10 |
![]() RUMBLE AT THE TED!! Thoughts? Cage match winner? |
12:10 |
: I wouldn’t want to be Gomez there. I wouldn’t F with a catcher. Dudes get pummled by high-nineties fastballs like *every* day.
|
12:10 |
How closely correlated are pitching/hitting stats? Is a hitter with a 120 OPS+ about equal to a pitcher with a 120 ERA+? |
12:11 |
: WAR would probably help you answer that question?
|
12:11 |
Hi Eno!! I listen to your podcast with Mike Podhorzer all the time. This was my first year playing fantasy baseball and you guys helped me a lot! I nearly made the final (lost by one R) and am now in a matchup for 3rd place in our league. Anyways, I’m in a 5×5 12-team H2H format mixed league where we’re allowed 4 hitting keepers. I have 3 of my keepers determined at SS, LF, & CF, but can’t decide who my 4th keeper should be. between eric hosmer, will venable, wilson ramos, pablo sandoval, and xander bogaerts, who should i keep? My 3 other keepers are all 5-tool players, so I probably don’t need steals as badly as the rest of my league. FYI we can keep players for a maximum of 6 years, and we are not in auction format. Thanks for all your help! |
12:12 |
: Venable is old, so he’s out. Wilson Ramos seems replaceable, I don’t believe in quite this much power. So, Pablo for a rebound or betting on the future in Bogaerts. I actually think Xander, even without a guarantee at a job right now, might be worth this risk.
|
12:12 |
in a 12 team league with 28 man rosters. With 16 keepers how many pitchers should i loook to be keeping?? |
12:13 |
: By the 16th round I usually like to have my starting lineup in place. Maybe you can leave util (or util x 2) open for the draft.
|
12:13 |
Did you see Cano supposedly looking for 10 years $300m+? that’s a joke, right? |
12:14 |
: Too much for me. ISO already calming down at 30. Could easily return to meh walk rate, meh defense as the power erodes.
|
12:14 |
If you’re the Nats, what’s your #1 off-season priority? |
12:16 |
: I think this is a fascinating question. It’s not obvious what went wrong. I like their top three pitchers. I like their lineup for the most part. They could move Rendon to third, Zimm to first, make LaRoche a backup or send him packing, then they need a defense-first second baseman (or maybe Espy becomes an option with Rendon’s stepping forward). Mostly I think they need depth. More pitching. A number four, maybe even a number five that they like. Roark can five or six. Spend around the edges, improve depth.
|
12:16 |
James Paxton next season. Have much value? |
12:17 |
: So I guess the velocity drop was mostly because of his knee problem, because he’s back up to the mid-nineties and looks nice. Problem is, his change is no good. So he’s fastball/curveball. But it’s a nice fastball, looks like a good curve, and if he can show-me change, he’ll be a valuable player. One that you can start all the time at home, most of the time on the road, and use in the middle of any fantasy rotation. Doubt he’s a front-liner unless the change takes a step forward.
|
12:17 |
What are you expecting from Profar next year? |
12:18 |
: More power. Better plate discipline, fewer strikeouts. Unsure about the speed. Could see .275/15/10 if he had a full season. Longer term, more upside in power.
|
12:19 |
I’m about to finish in second in my roto league again…last year by .5, this year by 1 or 2. What drink should drown my sorrows? |
12:19 | : Tis the season for a brown |
12:20 |
Cardinals.. have they taken a Wong turn w/r to their future second baseman? |
12:21 |
: I think it was right for them to give him some time out in the field, although it may have hurt them a bit wrt to this season. Can Freese get back his mojo in a part time? Will Wong get as much PT in the playoffs? Wong is better than this though.
|
12:21 |
I like to ENO, ENO I like to ENO, ENO I like to ENO, ENO You like to——ENO! |
12:21 |
Eno, thanks for the chat. I’m still in line for my bobblehead, and this passes the time. |
12:21 |
Note to rusland… KISS (Keep it short and simple) |
12:21 |
Alright, Eno. Flying down to SF in 6 hours and need some must-get beers for the weekend. Thanks! |
12:22 |
http://beergraphs.com/bg/180-the-battle-for-san-francisco/ Also, just go to Toronado’s for legit old school beer bar or City Beer Store for cutting edge Cali best.
: Check out the leaderboard in this article lol |
12:23 |
MLB has put you in charge of its postseason music. Keep in mind they’ll play this for every ad where they show teams celebrating or fans watching a big home run, every commercial break during the postseason. What’s the song? |
12:23 |
: Something by ratatat because any vocals would get annoying after you watch it a million times.
|
12:24 |
In a keeper league, about to deal Matt Harvey as an 8th round keeper for Jason Heyward as a 12th rounder. Gotta jump on this, right? |
12:24 |
: Gotta think Harvey misses all or most of next year. You’re obviously selling low, but by the time this deal hurts, if it does, you’ll have gotten at least a half season out of Heyward.
|
12:24 |
Eno, I need a high % win today. Is Dillon Gee the man? He’s pitching against the Brewers Hellwig. |
12:25 |
: Yeah that’s pretty good. McAllister probably second.
|
12:25 |
Do you have any “sleeper” free agents on your radar? As in, guys who could make an impact next year but haven’t been talked about much. |
12:27 |
: Scanning quickly. Salalamacchia? Corey Hart. Burnett.
|
12:27 |
wait why is the winner bitter and broken |
12:27 |
: Lyrics? They’re only happy when they’re running away with it, mostly.
|
12:27 |
Beer of the week… Carlton Draught.. had a mate send me a sixer from New South Wales.. stuff is mediocre, but, has a kick mule would envy.. |
12:27 |
Have you had “Seance” by Magic Hat? It’s their dark saison and is the fist worthwhile (in fact quite good) beer I have had from them in years |
12:28 |
Does Brian McCann get a sash for being MLB’s Hall Monitor? |
12:28 |
: luded
|
12:28 |
What’s the biggest gap ever between someone’s FIP WAR and RA WAR? |
12:28 |
: Career? Glavine comes to mind.
|
12:28 |
Who are the more pathetic “fighters”: baseball players, basketball players, or other? |
12:28 |
: Basketball players are pretty bad. Have you ever seen Kevin Garnett fight? Oooh boy.
|
12:28 |
I need a QS. Who do you like? Haren, Kluber, Y Petit, Kazmir,or Stults? |
12:29 |
: Kaz and Klub.
|
12:29 |
Keep 3: Cespedes, Rios, Cuddyer, Ortiz |
12:30 |
: Rios. Only one with a period. I might try to trade Cuddyer plus Ortiz if anyone is looking at a worse group on the fringe of their keeper list. Cespedes has no trade value, but I think he can .265/25/10 next year. Maybe even more power.
|
12:30 |
I hate carrying a bench bat even in deep leagues: Dayan Viciedo when I have started him: 19/5/22/0/.227/.597 over 264AB When I have benched him: 24/9/35/0/.377/1.200 over 167AB GRRRRRR |
12:30 |
: Did you try to play him solely against lefties too? Dang.
|
12:30 |
What are your general thoughts on Hector Santiago? Am I crazy for envisioning similarities to Gio Gonzalez? |
12:31 |
: I don’t see it when I watch him. The screwball is mediocre. The change is okay. Bad control. Homeritis. Not pitching in a great place for his skills.
|
12:31 |
Where are you drafting Kemp next year? Are you confident that he can put up stats to meet that value? Do you advise trading him in the offseason? |
12:32 |
: He strikes out too much. My back of the beer coaster projection is .270/25/15. Better than Cespedes, but not much better. Looks like a third-rounder or so, I could push it to second round if I thought he looked healthy this postseason. Shoulder injury mucking up projections. If he gets full healthy, can hit 30 again.
|
12:32 |
Kazmir is probably the best stream option I can find this weekend, right? |
12:32 |
: Yes
|
12:32 |
Rosenthal closing next season? Has to be, right |
12:32 |
: Jason Motte has to be scared. I think so. TR has more weapons.
|
12:32 |
how much does the concussion cloud Joe Mauer’s keeper value |
12:33 |
: Only that he might move off catcher, like next year.
|
12:33 |
Should a team like the Orioles pursue Carlos Beltran to DH next year? |
12:33 |
: Yes
|
12:33 |
Please tweet more sandwich statuses. |
12:33 |
: I’ve been told the opposite! Also: baby’s cramping my style. Now I just throw weird stuff together.
|
12:33 |
Holds League, My opponent has 4 more remaining starts. I’m losing W and Holds by 1, and I am going to definitely lose K’s. I have one more pick-up remaining. Do I pick up Joe Kelly or Drew Smyly? |
12:34 |
: One missing piece of information: do you have any other starts coming? If not, pick up Smyly.
|
12:34 |
Can I drop Melancon or Mujica now for streamers? 21 keepers makes me hesitate. |
12:34 |
: Mujica won’t close again, I wouldn’t think.
|
12:34 |
So Eno, what’s your 2013 Fantasy record look like for all your leagues? Happy, disappointed? |
12:35 |
: Gonna win three leagues I think. Top three in a couple more. Good year. I thought it was going to be better but some of my teams slowed down.
|
12:35 |
: One thing I did this year that I can alter a bit next year. In the past I’ve been very reticent to trade. I wanted to win each trade. This year, I said screw it and made more trades. I lost some. Maybe you could say I lost some badly. BUT! If I move the pendulum just a bit more back to not trading, but keep some of that gusto, I feel optimistic I’ll find a good balance. It’s hard to trade.
|
12:36 |
if I can keep 14 players (6×5 w/ OBP extra cat) is 4 SP (Felix, Darvish, Cliff Lee, Anibal) 1 too many? Lee’s old and Anibal has never been this good but both have to be top 15-20 SP going into next year right? |
12:36 |
: That’s fine. I’d have four pitchers by the 14th round, and I’d be happy with that group.
|
12:36 |
Piggybacking on the Paxton question, do you think he’s a deep league keeper? |
12:36 |
: yes. Definitely.
|
12:36 |
Asking since we don’t have access to it, but do teams have access to better minor-league plate discipline data (like Oswing)? If not, wouldn’t it be worth teams hiring someone that could do that for them- to have an advantage in player information? |
12:37 |
: They might in their own parks. There’s probably more out there in that arena that we don’t know about. I’ve been told that even the Giants have their own cameras around the field that are not PITCHf/x or FIELDf/x.
|
12:37 |
please rank these middle infield prospects: Rougned Odor, Corey Seager, Arismendy Alcatara, Mookie Betts |
12:37 |
: That’s pretty deep. I might like Betts and Seager best once you consider how their major league teams look.
|
12:38 |
: Obviously Pedroia isn’t going anywhere, but the Red Sox could trade Betts pretty easily. Rangers haven’t been trading guys like Odor and have a bit of a glut going. Otherwise I’d have Odor over Betts.
|
12:38 |
Because you care, my Nats off-season wish list: 1) LHP bullpen help. 2) RHB 4th OF who can play CF and spell Span against LHP (Rajah Davis would be PERFECT!) 3) Trade LaRoche, move Zim to 1B and Rendon to 3B, sign a new 2B: Cano! *drool*, or even Zobrist or Infante would be awesome too. 4) Sign a competent SP so we can keep Jordan and Roark in AAA as insurance. Agree? |
12:39 |
: Zob won’t be an FA. That sounds like just about what I said lol. Davis/Infante/Wandy or Burnett sounds great.
|
12:40 |
Are you playing fantasy football? And did you rip your hair out already becaus of it? Are you tonnage give Fantasy basketball a go this year? Underrated fantasy sport and I find it fun. |
12:40 |
: I have one team each for football and basketball. I’ll be prepping for fantasy baseball season in like two weeks.
|
12:40 |
Tis always the season for an IPA! Tricerahops by Ninkasi! |
12:40 |
Sierra Nevada Tumbler is a good fall brown ale. But I haven’t seen it around yet, and I heard they weren’t releasing it this year 🙁 |
12:41 |
hey isn’t that Seymour’s Nut Brown Sassafras Autumn Butter Toast Cranapple Wheat Ale special? |
12:41 |
: LOL
|
12:41 |
If you were sitting in the upper nose bleeds at Yankee Stadium during the live version of “Enter Sandman”, could you tell the difference? |
12:41 |
: By the reaction of the people around you, by the buzz, yeah probably. Live music rocks.
|
12:41 |
Can you rank Danny Salazar, Sonny Gray and Taijuan Walker for me over the next 4 years or so? |
12:42 |
: Gray is the steady eddie, but Salazar and Walker have higher ceilings. It’s hard for me not to just jump in Salazar’s lap, so I’ll throw caution to the wind and take the guy with no scouting pedigree just because I love his stuff.
|
12:42 |
am I the only one that will never hear “tonight tonight” by smashing pumpkins the same way since it was the FOX commercial transition song of the 2004 postseason? Admitted bias: it was a kinda special postseason for this sox fan 🙂 |
12:42 |
The correct answer to postseason music is “Kickstart My Heart” by Motley Crue, to be played roughly halfway through each pitcher’s delivery. |
12:42 |
am i the only one that sees “hellweg” and imagines a wig of pure fire or possibly some manner of unpleasant insect? |
12:42 |
: Or a mail-delivering owl
|
12:43 |
Hadn’t seen these new BeerGraphs tools, pretty handy! Still would like to sort by wOBAR, though. |
12:43 |
: That, and regional availability filters, are the next things on our list.
|
12:43 |
If you were Tito Francona.. do you move Masterson to the pen for the rest of the seaosn.. or do you want him in your rotation? |
12:43 |
: I think he would be really fun as a long-stretch reliever once they are more assured of making the playoffs.
|
12:44 |
Aramis Ramirez is likely to miss the last 4 games of the year meaning Yuniesky Betancourt is likely to start the last 4 games of the year. Even though they’re playing the Mets, the Brewers have a solid shot at that 6th overall pick in next year’s draft, right? |
12:44 |
: Oh man Betancourt, he pretty much makes it a lock.
|
12:44 |
Top 3 under the radar pitcher values for next year: Ventura / salazar…? |
12:45 |
: It’s so hard because those guys are NOT under my radar at all. But if they fall, they’ll be on my teams yes.
|
12:45 |
Gyorko has shown some tasty power oh those whiffs. Do you think he gets them under control next year or will pitchers stop throwing him strikes and stormy seas ahead? |
12:46 |
: He’s got a bit of a violent swing. And a lot of swinging strikes. I think he could push it down closer to 20%, but thinking now that he won’t be a 16-18% guy.
|
12:46 |
Sorry Eno, we’re going to go in a different direction– you’re fired. We’ll be playing “Blurred Lines” all throughout the postseason. |
12:47 |
: pFFFt
|
12:47 |
the times Rickey Henderson was caught stealing would rank 122nd all-time in stolen bases |
12:47 |
: Fun tidbit.
|
12:47 |
Eno, Shark worth an 8th round pick next year in a standard 12 team roto-league? Thanks |
12:48 |
: That’s interesting. I’ll be picking him in the 8-10 round spot, but would I want to lock him in there if I saw him dropping further?
|
12:48 |
Keep Gray or Wacha? HELP |
12:49 |
: Given choice between two guys with equal velocity and two primary pitches, I’m going to take the guy who’s secondary pitch is a change up. Wacha.
|
12:49 |
Does Singleton make it to Houston at all next year? |
12:49 |
: For sure. They’ll be giving everyone a month or two to prove themselves, just as they did this year. By next year they might have three or four regulars they can count on. Singleton could be one. He’s probably better than Brett Wallace, Marc Krauss, the list goes on.
|
12:50 |
What does Billy Hamilton’s OBP have to be for him to be am everday player? |
12:50 |
: If he can play cromulent or better CF (I think he can), I honestly think anything over .310 or so will work for Dusty Baker.
|
12:50 |
Our target demographic for our postseason music in commercials is ‘people who neither like baseball, nor music.’ |
12:50 |
: Gotta reach out beyond the core, I get it.
|
12:51 |
Tom Glavine career xFIP: 4.57 Tim Wakefield career xFIP: 4.77 Glavine: 14.0 K% 8.1 BB% Wakefield: 15.5 K% 8.6 BB% Great case study of WTF DIPS? |
12:51 |
: fly ball rates, right
|
12:51 |
What’s the rule of thumb for age of bottled beer at the supermarket? I got burned on some six month old Goose Island from Kroger and am still upset about it. |
12:51 |
: some bottles have the age on it somehwere. this is why seasonals are actually helpful. Just make sure it’s not last year’s version.
|
12:52 |
Schierholtz has been bad, Gose has been hot. would need to drop Schierholtz in a 20 team keeper to activate Gose… Should I? I’m playing for 3rd |
12:52 |
: Schierholtz is meh. 2/3 player. Not a great dynasty keeper anyway.
|
12:52 |
Why do the Knicks constantly try to ruin my life? |
12:52 |
: What, did they sign Sam Perkins?
|
12:53 |
Speaking of Cespedes, $20 in a 15 team roto with obp instead of ba? |
12:53 |
: Yes.
|
12:53 |
He betrayed us this year by putting up better walk rates, K rates, power, average, and speed as the season went along last year. Primed for a 30-20-.290 type breakout. What hapend? |
12:53 |
: We should have been looking more at the swinging strike rate. But no reason for a .274 BABIP either.
|
12:54 |
: Well, a slight fly ball tendency. But mostly they lauded his ability to make adjustments last year, so why can’t he do it again.
|
12:54 |
What was your “James Paxton call”? |
12:54 |
: We’re doing daily streamers on the podcast this week and he was my favorite for yesterday.
|
12:54 |
about those starting/sitting Viciedo splits: he mostly made it into my lineup on short schedule days and whenever one of Rosario/Posey/Beltran was getting a day off….just incredibly poor luck on which days those were…. |
12:54 |
: Yeah, bigger point is right: bench bats mostly useless. I use those spots for upside plays.
|
12:55 |
Is it just me, or are the Royals going to be the 2013 Pirates in 2014? |
12:55 |
: With Ventura playing the part of Cole? They still need better pitching, and they don’t have any of the on-field strategic genius of the Pirates going for them.
|
12:55 |
better in 2014: Salazar or Gausman? |
12:56 |
: I love me some Gausman still. Splitter, just as much gas. You’re testing my recency bias. If I had both, I could see trading Salazar at hype value for a tasty veteran, hoping Gaus regains fame.
|
12:56 |
any chance they install Pitch F/X in AA/AAA parks and release that data to the public like MLB Pitch F/X? |
12:56 |
: I’m really worried that the days of public f/x are done.
|
12:58 |
Drafted Longo, Cespedes, and Butler in that order…..20 team league. I’m playing in the championship week right now…..how? |
12:58 |
: Killed it on the back end.
|
12:58 |
I am limping to the finish line in my H2H league finals. Already lost Harvey, Fernandez, and now Bumgarner. I was looking for some SP streamers that I could pick up over the final weekend. Thanks! |
12:58 |
: We’ll be doing this in the podcast, but I just picked up Morton and Paxton in a deeper league.
|
12:58 |
What do you think is the most important thing someone has been doing while participating in one of your chats? Voting on a major national decision? Ordering pizza toppings? Somewhere in between? |
12:59 |
: Learning how to practice law has been established, so we’re past pizza toppings. I’m sure someone’s been in a meeting during peak fantasy season. But what was that meeting about.
|
12:59 |
“One missing piece of information: do you have any other starts coming? If not, pick up Smyly.” Yes I have 4 remaining starts and he has 8 |
12:59 |
: You’re still screwed. Pick up Smyly.
|
12:59 |
I have found especially in my keepers/dynasties that I am fine with “losing” a trade so long as I make sure to trade with the bottom dwellers and also-rans. You’re helping the league and greasing the wheels for future deals with the teams selling assets. |
1:00 |
: So many of my leagues are dynasties too.
|
1:00 |
Is Hill Farmstead the pound for pound best brewery in the country? It seems like everything they release gets fantastic reviews. |
1:00 |
: Yeah but there’s some hype to it. You have to drive to Vermont!
|
1:00 |
Wandy has a $13 million player option and Burnett said retirement or stay in Pittsburgh 50-50 just last weekend. |
1:00 |
: I thought they might decline the Wandy option and I don’t buy retirement talk from AJ. Should see him in the clubhouse. Maybe it’s just a ploy to stay in Pitt.
|
1:01 |
Founders breakfast Stout! In stores! Yay!!! |
1:01 |
Long term dynasty…..Xander Bogaerts or Manny Machado? |
1:02 |
: Bogaerts still has a chance to play short, I think, even though the knee injury wasn’t a huge deal as it first seemed, they won’t be moving Manny back to short. With all those infield flies, it’s hard to evaluate Manny. If he can iron out the swing plane, he could be awesome. As is, right now, Bogaerts.
|
1:02 |
Do you think that teams are tanking by removing regulars from the lineup and shutting down regulars for the balance of the season. The benefit is a higher pick, but just as important, is their first round pick is protected from providing a compensatory pick |
1:02 |
: The veterans are hurt! We aren’t tanking!
|
1:02 |
I got Tumbler this year…oh god i hope my beer store didn’t just have leftovers from last year. |
1:03 |
I have Asche and Headley in a deep mixed keeper league, keep one, none or both? |
1:04 |
: I think they can both .260/15/10 next year, but obviously Headley has more upside. I might keep both if I could.
|
1:04 |
Who you like today out of Lincecum, Garza, Nova, McAllister, Erlin? Thanks, Eno! |
1:05 |
: Garza. Nova. Lincecum. McA. Erlin. F it. All of them. But in that order.
|
1:05 |
I strongly encourage everyone to pay attention to the seven-team race for protected draft picks. All seven are within one game, and it involves things like teams starting the aforementioned Yuni Betancourt. |
1:05 |
Jose Quintana has quietly become just about mixed league rosterable huh? |
1:06 |
: Improved his control, added a bit of velocity, changed his mix a bit. Yeah. He’s a good final pitcher in mixed leagues.
|
1:06 |
If YOU won both of your H2H leagues’ regular season, then lost your first playoff matchup in both, what beer would you drink? Whiskey? It’s been a long, rewarding season and a swift kick in the pants of a playoff… |
1:06 |
: 120 minute for you (18%)
|
1:07 |
Tom Glavine a HOF candidate to you? (Do the wins trump the really meh peripherals?) Seems he was a master of HR suppression and sequencing |
1:07 |
: When your sample gets that big, you can ignore FIP. I think he’s in.
|
1:07 |
Do you think Yordano Ventura will begin next season in the Royals rotation? How will he do? |
1:07 |
: I’m a little more worried about his health than his ability to succeed. He’s got good stuff. Just a little flingy.
|
1:07 |
What is the earliest you would draft Kershaw in a 15 team Mixed 5 x 5? |
1:08 |
: End of the first?
|
1:08 |
Think the Cards go Wong at 2B and Carpenter at 3B next year and trade Freese? |
1:08 |
: You think Freese has trade value? I think they probably try the Freese/Wong platoon again.
|
1:08 |
What should the A’s do with Anderson in the playoffs? |
1:08 |
: Just what they’re doing with him. Emergency starter/third-inning replacement.
|
1:08 |
Is it just a coincidence that Jake Arrietta is a new man after landing in Chicago? Could they do the same for Brian Matusz, Zach Britton, and Kevin Gausman? |
1:09 |
: 1) NL. 2) I see some upside in his secondary pitches that I didn’t see before. 3) He could still get over-rated. Gausman doesn’t need the NL. Britton and Matusz could be NL SPs.
|
1:10 |
re Glavine/Wakefield: correct you are: glavine had a 33% FB% and Wake had a 44% FB%….both had identical 9.3 HR/FB% ground balls FTW 🙂 |
1:10 |
Wakefields LoB wins -17.9 Glaive +12.6 – |
1:10 |
I just came for the beer today |
1:10 |
: Who’s got some?
|
1:10 |
From just watching him play….if he learned to lay off the breaking ball down and away…..we could see some superstar numbers. Just my $0.02. |
1:11 |
: He also likes the fastball up and in a bit much. And I’ve seen the combo (up and in then down and away breaking) send him back to the dugout many times. You *think* that’s an easy adjustment, but then you remember Andruw Jones.
|
1:11 |
Who projects more as a future starter: Trevor Rosenthal or Carlos Martinez? |
1:11 |
: At this point, I think TR is a closer.
|
1:12 |
better pair for 2014: straily/gray or griffin/milone? |
1:12 |
: Straily Gray
|
1:12 |
complicated Eno type question… I have a .08 WHIP lead on a team that will start Kershaw, Wainwright, and Stults. I have a 4 W lead on a team that will start Lincecum, Lee, Greinke, Wood, and Ryu. Which of the following starters do I bench to protect the ratio lead while not having W stolen? Strasburg (v.Corbin), McCarthy and Haren (against each other) and Morton (v.Arroyo) |
1:13 |
: With a four-win lead, I think you sit all of them except Stras. He’s not going to get five wins. If he gets four, you have a shot at still getting one. I think he gets two or three at most. Morton seems riskiest. You could try to start McC and Haren both and hope for a close game and you get the win.
|
1:14 |
sorry, that was .008… math |
1:14 |
: Even more reason to only start Stras.
|

Beer Recc: “Existant” Dark Saison by Stillwater Artisianl http://stillwaterales.blogspot.com/p/stillwater-portfolio.html |
1:14 |
: Yes. Excellent.
|
1:14 |
Crap, I’m late to the chat! Umm….beer! Robinson Cano! The Pixies! |
1:14 |
There is a disturbing lack of waffles in this chat. |
1:14 |
: Asked and answered.
|
1:15 |
If you had #1 pick in minor league draft NL only dynasty league, who would you take? Gregory Polonco, Archie Bradley, or Syndergaard? Or someone else draft in this past june? |
1:15 |
: Bryant would be tempting, but we know so much more about Polanco. I do take a hitter over a pitcher.
|
1:15 |
Drew Smyly is a good pitcher. Going to be a good starter. Buy low. |
1:15 |
: Yeah and from the multi-inning usage, I think they are going to try him as a starter next year. Always liked him.
|
1:16 |
I think I’m playing against Jax Teller in the fantasy championship he alluded to… |
1:16 |
: I’ve consulted people on both sides of a Mike Trout trade.
|
1:16 |
Re: Billy Hamilton OBP – Cozart has career .288 OBP and Dusty had no problem hitting him in the 1/2 spot for pretty much all of 2012 and the first half of 2013. |
1:16 |
having Yuni Betancourt on your roster to tank games in September: the new market inefficiency? |
1:16 |
: “It’s not like we’re not playing a professional ball player out there.”
|
1:16 |
fell back in love with baseball this year and found fangraps soon thereafter. Trying to learn about all the advanced stats. Currently trying to understand contact%. Is a high contact% always a good thing? What about outside the zone %? |
1:18 |
: contact % is almost always a good thing, at least for OBP. Scutaro would not be a ball player without that elite skill. But making your bank on O-contact is iffy. (Pablo, Josh Hamilton, Vlad). Because o-contact is the skill that drops off the earliest and the fastest. I think it takes a lot of fine-twitch athleticism to hit a fastball at your toes out of the park.
|
1:18 |
drop Pineda this OS? |
1:18 |
: Yeah you can always get him back in the final rounds next year if you want to give him another shot.
|
1:18 |
How much of your draft strategy is influenced by a players home field? Do you focus on position players from hitters parks and pitchers from pitchers parks? |
1:19 |
: I do when I’m streaming, very much so. I do a little bit in deep league, where a guy like Jeff Baker or Mitch Moreland becomes more interesting because of their home park.
|
1:19 |
Hve you thought about brewing your own beer? |
1:19 |
: I’ve brewed my own beer. I just don’t have much time.
|
1:19 |
since Perez has been so inconsistent should Francona promote Allen to closer? |
1:19 |
: It’s only a question of when.
|
1:20 |
What do the Pirates do next year at 1B? Do you think they try and sign Morneau and platoon him with Gaby? |
1:20 |
: Corey Hart would be a sexy idea.
|
1:21 |
I’d participate more often, but the Knicks have ruined my day. Just waiting for Shump to get traded and Isiah Thomas to be back. What a horrible day to be a Knicks fan. |
1:22 |
: WHAT HAS HAPPENED
|
1:22 |
Cespedes dynasty owners just threw up in their mouths a little when you invoked Andruw Jones….. |
1:22 |
: yeah. Well.
|
1:22 |
do we see another 30 HR campaign from Prince again? |
1:22 |
: Yes.
|
1:22 |
Choose one to keep for 3 years: Gray, Skaggs, Ventura, Wacha, Walker, Zimmer. H2H points |
1:23 |
: Definitely not Skaggs. Ventura no for health. Walker Zimmer not proven. So Gray or Wacha and I picked Wacha earlier.
|
1:23 |
I’m in two H2H championship matchups this week, in both of my dynasties, so thank you for your advice this year. Unfortunately, I’m losing so far in both of them: how soon is too soon to start worrying? My bats have gone cold, so it’s not really an add/drop fix. |
1:24 |
: Well, in our league I think you should just lay down to me. In the other league? Think hard about your worst player or two, take a shot at streaming for offense… it’s all you can do.
|
1:24 |
one thought on contact%: if you see a batter with good overall results that has a high O-swing% and low Z-contact%…..There be monsters ahead |
1:24 |
Does Chris Owing have a shot at starting with Hill & Didi there? |
1:24 |
: I don’t see it, unless third base and Prado back to OF.
|
1:25 |
What about that Cuban guy for the Bucs? |
1:25 |
: They going to spend all that money?
|
1:25 |
Are you a scout? |
1:25 |
: Nope. Just doing my best to prognosticate. Cause that *is* actually what I’m paid to do.
|
1:25 |
Eno, will you do these chats in the offseason or are we at 4 and counting?! |
1:26 |
: Not even sure what the next few weeks will look like. I’ll be covering the postseason whenever the A’s are in town, and heading south if the Dodgers make it further, probably. But I will be part of the site’s chat strategy. I’ll try to let y’all know the next time I have a chat, ahead of time. Like maybe a chat from the winter meetings.
|
1:26 |
Why does everyone like Nova and Erlin today? Erlin’s SS% is low compared to his strikeouts and his walk rate makes him a poor K-BB. Goldy, Hill, Davidson, and other RHBs are going to tear him up (LHP). Nova was good for what 1 start? He goes against the completely platooned Rays. |
1:27 |
: I don’t like Erlin that much, but at least he’s home. I do like Nova. Have you noticed how much better he’s been this year? Combined the best parts of his previous lines. He’s a good pitcher is why I like him.
|
1:28 |
: I don’t see how you look at Nova’s line and don’t like him, actually.
|
1:28 |
Any BG chats? |
1:28 |
: We do our version of chats Fridays, fairly regularly. They fun too.
|
1:28 |
Is Curtis Granderson a good hold in a dynasty, or could he be ditched for someone who’s hitting now? |
1:29 |
: I’d like to keep him around.
|
1:29 |
Keep Teheran or Cobb. So hard |
1:29 |
: Damn that is hard. Maybe go NL just because it’s so much easier in the NL. Though Cobb’s change is wicked.
|
1:29 |
About the Rays…what defines their lineup each day? Joyce against a RHP bats anywhere from 1st to 7th or 8th. All other players move around a ton too. What factors and who decides that lineup? |
1:30 |
: They might be doing stuff like “this guy has a curve or throws low in the zone and Joyce likes / doesn’t like that.”
|
1:30 |
i have 30 innings left (plus overages), and potential starts by gallardo @ nym, pettite @ hou, lee @ atl, greinke v col, estrada @ nym, cain v SD, bedard v nyy… shoud i skip pettite tomorrow? or play him and make a game time decision on greinke? |
1:30 |
: Greinke might not pitch is my guess.
|
1:30 |
Knicks fired Glen Grunwald, whatever that means, could care less about teh NBA. |
1:30 |
: That is not upsetting to me.
|
1:30 |
If I asked for advice for how to beat you in our head-to-head finals, which Eno would win out: professional Eno or competitive Eno? |
1:30 |
: Man you know I’ve given you professional advice on our league lol.
|
1:31 |
I’m starting both Nova and Cobb tonight, what are the chances of a great pitching duel? |
1:31 |
: Very high.
|
1:31 |
How much more suffering do i have to endure? |
1:31 |
: Some day, it’ll be very, *very* sweet.
|
1:31 |
What player most surprises you that they’re still on a major league club? Thinking of that walk-off by Giambi a few nights ago. |
1:33 |
: Was going to be mean and say JP Arencibia, but every answer is mean. Maybe anyone in the Astros bullpen.
|
1:33 |
I agree Nova was good this year and what have liked to have him in many leagues (NFBC and Yahoo). However, he seems lucky lately (strand rate 100% over last 7 days) and his velocity is plummetting… |
1:34 | : Had not noticed this |
1:34 |
: Still think he’s fine for today. TB o is improved, but it doesnt’ scare me if I think the pitcher is decent.
|
1:34 |
in h2h whenever possible: forecast your # of starts for the week/scoring period and your opponents….if you are behind by 2+ starts then it is time to pick up a streamer or 3 |
1:34 |
Did you hear Mariano Rivera is retiring? That hasn’t that been in the news at all. |
1:34 |
: Who?
|
1:35 |
@Mariners Fan–add about 70 YEARS to your suffering and you’ll have an idea of what Cubs angst is like. Amateur!!! |
1:35 |
You think Girardi walks? |
1:35 |
: yeah I think it’s going to be a hard couple of years in New York.
|
1:35 |
: Guys! I’m going to the park today! I’m planning a meetup in SF on october 1 for the wild card game! I’ll chat again! I promise!
|
1:36 |
: Thanks for stopping by!
|
1:36 |
Thanks Eno! |
1:36 |
Thanks for a great season of chats Eno! |
With a phone full of pictures of pitchers' fingers, strange beers, and his two toddler sons, Eno Sarris can be found at the ballpark or a brewery most days. Read him here, writing about the A's or Giants at The Athletic, or about beer at October. Follow him on Twitter @enosarris if you can handle the sandwiches and inanity.
I tell you a Roto tale of woe:
I was asked by a coworker to play in a league with his friends–$50 gets you in, easily the most I’d ever bet before. I was emotionally and monetarily invested in this one. I give him the money to PayPal over to his friends in another state. We draft, we play.
At the All-Star break I get an email from the commish: “So, none of you have paid. We gonna do it, or just screw it and focus on fantasy football instead?” I politely point out that I have put in my money. Crickets from the rest of the league. At the time I led the league by 10 points.
Crickets. I will win the league by 15 points.
How close are you to these people at work?
Will they rat you out if you have to break some thumbs?
