Description:
The Boston Red Sox are seeking a Baseball Data Architect for the team’s Baseball Research & Development group. The primary role of this position is to design, implement, and manage the information architecture of all baseball systems. The Architect will partner with data providers and the baseball analytics and software development groups to maintain data infrastructure, support needs, implement solutions, and drive innovation in baseball’s decision process. Key functions will include data modeling, integration, warehousing, and consumption. Additionally, the Architect is expected to research industry trends, stay current on new tools and technology, and understand best-in-class capabilities from other baseball, sports, or non-sports leaders in the field of data analytics.

The position reports to the Sr. Baseball Systems Development Lead.

Responsibilities:

  • Through research, design, and architectural efforts, and in collaboration with software development resources, ensure the Boston Red Sox decision-makers have access to world-class data content for analytical and system purposes.
  • Understand and document current database structures, historical design decisions, format, definitions, limitations, and content of currently used external and internal data feeds, and establish future requirements.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the all areas within Baseball Operations to help design effective and highly integrated solutions.
  • Provide technical and strategic advice to baseball leadership regarding the creation and implementation of new data standards, databases, products, and vendors.
  • Ensure processes and systems are in place to support the integrity, accuracy, consistency, and availability of all content.
  • Create and manage ETL (extract, transform, load) data integration processes.
  • In collaboration with the analytics and software development teams, design and implement baseball algorithms and functionality.
  • Partner with data providers to understand current and future data roadmaps, identify limitations, and develop a long-term data content plan in collaboration with baseball leadership.
  • Respond to and resolve data-related problems and issues in a timely manner.
  • Complete ad-hoc database queries and analysis as directed.
  • Effectively communicate statuses to the VP, Baseball Research & Development, Sr. Baseball Systems Development Lead, as well as other leadership, as requested throughout all projects.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, a quantitative field, or equivalent professional experience; Master’s degree a plus.
  • 5+ years of related work experience, including demonstrated knowledge about data management best practices, long-term maintainability of code, and ability to effectively solve problems pertaining to data infrastructure and integrity.
  • Demonstrated creativity and engineering ability to provide architectural insight.
  • Proven track record of collecting and understanding complex requirements and delivering creative and effective solutions to the business.
  • Expertise in relational databases, database design, architecture, and development.
  • Expertise in writing and optimizing T-SQL queries, stored procedures, and user-defined functions in SQL Server 2012/14/16.
  • Experience with ETL and BI reporting tools (e.g., Microsoft SSIS & SSRS).
  • Experience in performance tuning and data automation techniques.
  • Experience developing in C# for web or desktop applications.
  • Experience processing CSV, JSON, and XML formatted data.
  • Experience with object-oriented programming (OOP).
  • Experience developing web and desktop applications.
  • Experience building elegant data visualizations for web and desktop applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate difficult and complex concepts to colleagues possessing a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Experience with Agile development is a plus.
  • Experience with big data systems is a plus.
  • Strong passion for baseball and understanding of current baseball research are a plus.
  • Experience with baseball-specific data, either publically available or otherwise (e.g., TrackMan, Statcast, etc.) is a plus.
  • Ability to work autonomously and as a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent presentation, written, and verbal communication.
  • Ability to develop and maintain successful working relationships with Front Office members.
  • High level of attention to detail with the ability to multi-task effectively.
  • High degree of professionalism and ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work evening, weekend, and holiday hours as dictated by the baseball calendar.
  • Willing and able to relocate to the Boston area.

The Red Sox have been vastly expanding their analitics department over the last 1.5 years. They are also in the process of building some type of supercomputer for their data. You can google “Red Sox Beacon” for more information.
