Position: Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Informatics Internship

Location: Pittsburgh

Description:
This position consists of a variety of data and analytical tasks within the Baseball Operations department. Under the direction of the Baseball Informatics group, this position is responsible for the daily operation of several processes and various data maintenance and analytical projects including but not limited to operating and extending processes for data extraction, transformation, cleansing, and loading to and from internal and external data sources, both structured and unstructured data. Additionally, this position is responsible for other duties as assigned by the Baseball Informatics group.

Qualifications:

  • Must be available for the entire term of internship (no later than mid-March to no earlier than the end of the regular season).
  • Experience with Structured Query Language (SQL).
  • Experience with a programming language such as C#, Perl or Python.
  • Understanding of baseball related data including Trackman and Sportvision data sets.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with other team members and to problem solve independently.
  • Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university, or currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program at a Junior, Senior or Graduate level.
  • Experience with statistical analysis software such as R.
  • Understanding of sabermetric techniques for player evaluation.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for a limited number of data and analytical tasks including the daily operation of several processes within Baseball Operations and Performance.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Baseball Informatics and Performance groups.
  • Learn Performance team equipment, software, data collection, and data processing techniques.
  • Learn biomechanical testing techniques to be performed by Performance staff.
  • Operate and extend processes for data extraction, transformation, cleansing, and interpretation of internal and external data sources not limited to structured data but also including unstructured data.
  • Assist in creating clear and concise summary performance reports for a variety of internal audiences.

Qualifications:

  • Must be available for the entire term of internship (no later than mid-March to no earlier than the end of the regular season).
  • Experience with Excel, Access, SQL Server or other data manipulation software required.
  • Experience with statistical analysis software such as R, SAS, or SPSS required.
  • An understanding of baseball related data including Trackman and Sportvision data sets.
  • An understanding of human anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics of movement, particularly as it pertains to baseball.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with other team members and to problem solve independently.
  • Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university, or currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program at a Junior, Senior or Graduate level.
  • An understanding of sabermetric techniques for player evaluation strongly preferred.
  • Experience with motion analysis software strongly preferred.
