Devised originally in response to a challenge issued by viscount of the internet Rob Neyer, and expanded at the request of nobody, NERD scores represent an attempt to summarize in one number (and on a scale of 0-10) the likely aesthetic appeal or watchability, for the learned fan, of a player or team or game. The Brewers entered play yesterday with just a 1% probability of qualifying for the play-in game, odds which increased to ca. 3% following the club’s 1-0 victory over the Pirates on Saturday (box). Wow, the team NERD playoff adjustments are strong now.

Especially noticeable in the case of two ballclubs (WSH, MIA) whose divisional playoff status or lack thereof is mathematically assured.
