Gerrit Cole (71.0 IP, 94 xFIP-, 0.5 WAR) faces Jesse Hahn (32.2 IP, 20.9% K, 8.2% BB at Double-A). The former is a 23-year-old who has recorded thus far the fourth-highest average fastball velocity, at 95.7 mph, among 101 qualified pitchers. The latter, making his major-league debut, is a 22-year-old right-hander who — according to multiple reports — is likely to sit at something like 93-96 mph with his fastball.

Regarding Jon Singleton, His Likely Debut
Houston first-base prospect Jon Singleton, who yesterday signed a long-term contract, is likely to make his major-league debut at home against the Anaheims tonight. He’s projected by Steamer to record a 102 wRC+ (.289 BABIP) over the remainder of the 2014 season.

Regarding Jaime Garcia, On the Status of His Status
St. Louis left-hander Jaime Garcia, recently returned from shoulder surgery, has struck out 19 of the 73 batters he’s faced thus far (26.0%) and walked zero of them.

I get the pitching matchup for the Padres-Pirates game, but both teams rated five is a stretch.

Yeah, Hutchinson v.Sanchez seems like a far more captivating matchup.
