World Series Game 6 Live Blog
7:58 |
: It could be the final day of the 2013 season. Cardinals try to live another day, Red Sox try to win it all again.
|
7:58 |
: This should be fun.
|
7:58 |
It could be the end of the Tim McCarver era as well! |
8:01 |
Which number is larger — the % chance that Matheny leaves Wacha in too long or the % chance that Ortiz wins the MVP? |
8:01 |
: 100% = 100%.
|
8:01 |
If the Cards come back to win the series in these two games and one of their hitters goes all Freese like, do you think he could win the MVP over Ortiz? What would it take for a Cardinal to win it at this point? |
8:01 |
: Wacha could win it if he has a dominant start tonight. No one else, probably.
|
8:02 |
Ross over Saltalamacchia against an RHP? That’s criminal, no? |
8:02 |
: No. Ross is a much better framer, and the offensive gap isn’t that big.
|
8:02 |
Do you think Ortiz should get credit from HOF voters for his postseason success? How much? |
8:02 |
: Yes, plenty. Still not enough to get him in.
|
8:02 |
How’s the puppy? |
8:03 |
: Not so great. Ended up taking her to the vet, and they couldn’t figure out what was wrong, but there’s clearly something off. She’s drugged up and we have to go back in the morning for repeat X-Rays.
|
8:04 |
There is some non-zero chance that Wacha gets injured early and immediately gets pulled on time. That’s about it though. |
8:04 |
: I think Wacha could be bleeding from his eyeballs and Matheny would still stick with him.
|
8:04 |
I hope puppy is okay in the end! |
8:05 |
: Yeah, me too, obviously. Having a miserable puppy is heartbreaking.
|
8:05 |
How many more good years does Ortiz need for you to think he’s a good HoF candidate? 2-3 more years at this level? 4-5? |
8:05 |
: 5.
|
8:06 |
Harshing my buzz with the puppy talk here Dave |
8:06 |
: Sorry. Back to baseball!
|
8:07 |
What if he hits a walkoff grandslam to win this game? HoF? |
8:07 |
: World Series heroics haven’t gotten Jack Morris in yet.
|
8:07 |
Who gets the ball in a theoritical Game 7? Peavy looked awful his last game. |
8:08 |
: Peavy’s their best available arm, regardless of how he did in his last start.
|
8:09 |
I already miss the Busch camera angle |
8:09 |
A McCarver gem:”First thing on St Louis’ mind should be to take the crowd out of this game.” That, or score runs. |
8:09 |
Game 7 pitcher play: Peavy for 3 innings max, but a short leash if he runs into trouble. Doubront for hopefully two. Lester for one or maybe two. Piece together another inning or two with Breslow/Workman/Dempster/Buchholz, then Tazawa/Uehara to finish. |
8:09 |
: Pretty much, yeah.
|
8:10 |
Thought that one would get off the wall. Cool air, maybe? |
8:10 |
: Everyone says its freezing up there.
|
8:10 |
: That looked way harder than it was.
|
8:11 |
: Nothing against Pedroia, but that was hit basically right at him.
|
8:12 |
Cardinals should be more patient, shouldn’t they? |
8:12 |
: Lackey pounds the zone.
|
8:12 |
Nspoli led first baseman in UZR this year in his first year full time there. Your guess as to whether it’s a SSS UZR fluke or for real? |
8:13 |
: Probably a bit of both. People watching him said he was pretty good there. Still have to regress the UZR when projecting the future though.
|
8:13 |
Pedroia’s play makes me wonder how much of the drop in offense has to do with much more inventive defensive positioning. Thoughts? |
8:13 |
: League BABIP hasn’t changed much over the last few years. League K% has gone way up. Hard to say that’s shifting.
|
8:14 |
What is the thinking behind Mujica and Miller? |
8:14 |
: “Don’t trust them, pretend they’re dead.”
|
8:16 |
Why not place them on IR and sub in two bench players then though? It doesn’t make sense |
8:16 |
: If Cardinals had better bench players, they’d be on the roster.
|
8:16 |
: Crushed.
|
8:16 |
: But foul.
|
8:17 |
How does he not do the Fisk hop there? |
8:17 |
Carlton Fisk’s ghost laughs. Carlton Fisk is still alive. |
8:18 |
Semi intentional walk coming up |
8:18 |
: That a curve? Looked like a curve.
|
8:18 |
: I think he just struck him out and didn’t get the call.
|
8:19 |
gameday agrees |
8:19 |
Looked like it. I guess that’s the kind of call you get when you’re hitting .750 |
8:19 |
He’s going after him, this is not semi-intentional at all |
8:20 |
Seriously? The Wave? What is this, a Spring Training Dodger game? |
8:20 |
That looked like a mistake. |
8:21 |
: Another curve.
|
8:21 |
: Interesting.
|
8:22 |
Dave, do you think batters assuming a ball four has any (negative) impact on an umpire’s call? |
8:22 |
: No.
|
8:22 |
If I’m Wacha I’m living and dying down and away with the FB/Change combo to Ortiz |
8:22 |
: His weak zone is actually fastballs up.
|
8:22 |
If the Cards win who gets Miller’s ring? His widow? Is he married? |
8:22 |
: Nasty change-up.
|
8:22 |
: Right-on-right out pitch change. Special.
|
8:25 |
When do you start locking up the Cards young pitchers? A ton of them are gonna reach free agency around the same time. |
8:25 |
: Pitchers break. I’d be okay with hardly ever locking up young pitchers. Year to year.
|
8:25 |
To your knowledge, has there been any research done on the topic of how a pitcher’s pace affects their performance? |
8:25 |
: There’s basically no correlation.
|
8:25 |
are change-ups actually less effective against same handed hitters as opposed to opposite handed hitters? or is just that change ups are more effective than sliders/curves to opposite handed hitters? |
8:26 |
: Yes, change-ups often tail into a same-handed hitter, and that makes them hittable if not located well.
|
8:27 |
RE Pace: This guy found that a slower pace slightly increases BABIP http://www.fangraphs.com/community/proejcting-babip-using-batted-ball-data/ |
8:27 |
Why start Craig against a righty? He looks about 50%. |
8:27 |
: Who’s the alternative?
|
8:28 |
That is why Craig is starting. |
8:29 |
Who wins in a foot race right now, Craig or Bengie Molina carrying Jose Molina? |
8:29 |
Wow Gomes couldnt have played that much more perfectly. |
8:29 |
: He could have fallen on his face five times and Craig still would have held at first.
|
8:30 |
Lackey is throwing up some hittable pitches |
8:31 |
so many line drives |
8:31 |
too early to get doubront? |
8:31 |
: Yes.
|
8:31 |
aren’t they probably saving Doubront for gm 7 because they trust Peavy less? |
8:31 |
: I would think we’ll see Doubront both days.
|
8:32 |
Made that look harder than it was |
8:32 |
Another line drive. |
8:32 |
: Ehh, that looked like a routine fly, except the wall is like 10 feet away so it looked deep.
|
8:33 |
Plus, Gomes makes everything look difficult |
8:35 |
Lackey inconsistent with curve |
8:35 |
This is like the surest double play set up ever |
8:36 |
Do you remember a time when you didn’t think that every stat displayed on a broadcast wasn’t somehow flawed? |
8:36 |
: I was like 11.
|
8:37 |
: That looked like the pitch Ortiz took.
|
8:37 |
Wow. |
8:38 |
weirdly lazy of ross there |
8:38 |
Wow, Ross very lazy. Can’t try pick that in this spot. |
8:38 |
Ross needs to block that. |
8:38 |
Salty stops that… |
8:38 |
Cody Ross is pretty new to catching, tho. |
8:38 |
: Nice curve to end it.
|
8:39 |
SI did a piece on homefield advantage, what they came up with was that the home crowd subtly influences the refrees decision making. for example, stoppage time in soccer is longer if the home team is tied and shorter if the home team is winning |
8:39 |
: That comes from a book called Scorecasting, and Phil Birnbaum has debunked a lot of it.
|
8:40 |
Have they ever thought discontinuing Jeremy’s cell phone service? |
8:40 |
Chance Jeremy is found before the winter meetings? |
8:40 |
So what causes home field advantage? |
8:40 |
: Best guess is familiarity with home park/bed/lack of travel/etc…
|
8:41 |
It’s the creepy Amazon dating service! |
8:41 |
The best kind of dating service. |
8:41 |
I feel like it’s a very bad idea to allow people to show themselves to an Amazon customer service agent. |
8:42 |
Who wouldn’t want to date an Amazon? |
8:42 |
Are the Red Sox solid proof that we too often are quick to write off bad seasons to decline? Victorino,Napoli,Drew,Lackey,Lester,Bucholz all enjoyed bounceback seasons. The Red Sox pulled a classic buy-low on a ton of pieces. |
8:42 |
: Yes, people overreact to most recent data too fast.
|
8:43 |
Gomes so clutch. |
8:43 |
Should have been an out. |
8:43 |
shoulda had that |
8:43 |
Jay’s range is so limited. |
8:43 |
Victorino’s shoes are patriotic because it’s not like St. Louis is in America |
8:43 |
Those shoes are disgraceful. |
8:44 |
Don’t the French own that part of the country? |
8:44 |
massachusetts invented america |
8:45 |
Last guy you want up right now except Ortiz |
8:45 |
In fairness the Cardinals are wearing Redcoats |
8:45 |
Boston’s colors are red, white, and blue. St. Louis only has red and white. Clearly Boston is 150% as patriotic. |
8:45 |
Wacha is on the verge of being victimized…by awful “Walk-a” jokes. |
8:46 |
would you have bunted? |
8:46 |
: No way.
|
8:47 |
has drew cost himself some FA money with his postseason |
8:47 |
: Actually might have made himself money by talking BOS out of making the QO.
|
8:48 |
David Ross looks 10 years older than Mike Matheny. |
8:48 |
That’s not Gandolf? |
8:48 |
Matheny bathes in the blood of Shelby Miller to maintain his youthful appearance. |
8:49 |
do you think a team without a protected pick would sacrifice their 1st for Drew? |
8:49 |
: No.
|
8:49 |
It’s Gandalf, not Gandolf- ban Dennis! |
8:49 |
: Wacha’s pretty good.
|
8:49 |
next time that kindle ad is on, notice that, even though the guy has never used the feature before, it already knows his niece’s name. Tacit admission? Hey, folks, Amazon here – just want to confirm that, yes, we data mine. |
8:49 |
more like Michael Strikeout-a |
8:50 |
Let Dennis live! Down with the nerds! |
8:50 |
Giancarlo Stanton for Oscar Taveras/Shelby Miller/Kolten Wong. Who says no? |
8:50 |
: Cardinals.
|
8:50 |
…this is Fangraphs. |
8:50 |
What happens if a player declines a QO but can’t find a team willing to give up a pick to sign him? |
8:50 |
: Ask Kyle Lohse.
|
8:51 |
what’s his twitter? |
8:52 |
Boooo! KFC sucks! Boooo! |
8:52 |
Black people eating fried chicken on TV, so racist. |
8:52 |
That’s a real power play, to eat your partner’s chicken like that. |
8:53 |
I’ve had about enough of the “everybody knows he aint just tough /he’s stroooong.” lyric. |
8:53 |
: Descalso just struck out on the pitch Ortiz took for a ball.
|
8:54 |
Another line drive. |
8:54 |
Someone tell Descalso the game has started. |
8:54 |
5 pitch inning. |
8:55 |
Brooks Baseball has the ball to Ortiz that you keep referencing as a ball. In fact, it’s been an almost perfect strike zone. http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/cache/fastmap.php-pitchSel=all&game=gid_2013_10_30_slnmlb_bosmlb_1&sp_type=2&s_type=7&cache=1.gif |
8:55 |
There’s no way Jeremy’s car is worth $13,000 |
8:56 |
Jeremy’s kind of a dick |
8:56 |
Am I the only one who pees during the commercials? |
8:56 |
: Every commercial? You should drink less water.
|
8:57 |
Jeremy sucks and all, but that last commercial was the loudest thing ever . . . |
8:57 |
You might have diabetes, chuckb. |
8:57 |
‘water’ |
8:57 |
Fangraphs should collectively diagnose Chuck. Chuck, how much water are you drinking per day? |
8:57 |
I’m on TV! |
8:58 |
Wait, it is a commercial, Chuck will not see these comments! |
8:58 |
The World Series sponsored by Pearl Jam? |
8:59 |
Do you run here? |
8:59 |
: No.
|
8:59 |
Red Sox fans think differently |
9:00 |
: He was going.
|
9:00 |
Nearly wonged |
9:01 |
Take your base Ortiz |
9:02 |
You like this move? |
9:02 |
: No.
|
9:02 |
: Overestimating Ortiz’s production here.
|
9:02 |
Don’t BOO Sox Fans – this is a good thing! |
9:03 |
I’m baaaaaaaack…not that I ever left. |
9:04 |
: Swung through a middle middle fastball.
|
9:04 |
A buzzball! |
9:05 |
Was Napoli always so Mark Reynoldsy? |
9:05 |
Definitely looking change |
9:05 |
: Another good curve.
|
9:05 |
: The IBB is now in scoring position.
|
9:06 |
#intangibles |
9:06 |
Victorino is slow clapping |
9:06 |
So many curveballs. |
9:08 |
Great pitch |
9:08 |
Framed! |
9:08 |
Molina stole that one methinks |
9:08 |
: And Ortiz scores.
|
9:08 |
: And Gomes scores.
|
9:08 |
Possible ballgame |
9:08 |
wow at that safe call |
9:08 |
gomes looked out |
9:08 |
He looked out live |
9:08 |
REVIEW! |
9:09 |
: Good call. Safe
|
9:09 |
props to Joyce |
9:09 |
Think Wacha comes out for the fourth? |
9:10 |
: Of course.
|
9:10 |
: BABIP’d.
|
9:10 |
Why doesn’t Victorino get criticized like Puig when he’s what, 12 years older and acts about the same? |
9:11 |
Because when it’s a young player, he’s a punk and when it’s a veteran it’s just him “showing emotion.” |
9:11 |
BABIP’d? He intentionally walked one run and hit the other…. |
9:12 |
: Referring to Bogaerts line drive going for an out.
|
9:12 |
Victorino wears American shoes |
9:12 |
TIME FOR A #SHUTDOWNINNING |
9:12 |
The real question is why the guy driving the motorcycle just took off, leaving his friend to careen down a hill. |
9:12 |
BoSox WE at 81.4% |
9:13 |
Three runs on a single and a double. Good IBB there, Matheny. |
9:13 |
give Boston 55% in 7 if they somehow lose this, and their WS WE is then .916, if my math is ok |
9:14 |
The Cardinals are beating everything into the ground. |
9:14 |
These dugout interviews are so reality TV.. do not want. |
9:14 |
Suckup. |
9:16 |
Another line drive. |
9:16 |
That was hung. |
9:16 |
Is there anyway we can get Guest to chime in with “another line drive” after every line drive? Thanks. |
9:17 |
: Maybe he was wearing the gold glove?
|
9:17 |
: Craig was moving pretty well.
|
9:17 |
Huge break. Thank God Freese & Jay are up to make them pay. |
9:17 |
: Dinger here would be fun.
|
9:17 |
: Let’s make this a game again.
|
9:18 |
go away |
9:18 |
: This live blog would be boring without me.
|
9:19 |
On a punchable face scale of 1 to John Harbaugh, I think Gomes’s face is a solid John Lackey. |
9:20 |
: Pretty great pitch there.
|
9:20 |
the lower third of the cardinals lineup is basically 3 pitchers |
9:20 |
Caveat: David Freese really isn’t very good |
9:21 |
: The music on this droid commercial makes me miss Jeremy.
|
9:21 |
Steamer projects Freese for a 121 wRC+ next season |
9:21 |
: I’ll take the under.
|
9:23 |
Was watching last game with a bunch of in-laws and their family — when Freese came up to bat they all thought he was great because he was the only one that they’d heard of. |
9:23 |
gomes was wacha’s first hit batter in entire pro career, minors and majors |
9:23 |
so you mean last year and this year, then? |
9:23 |
: Crushed.
|
9:23 |
: Stephen Drew is alive!
|
9:23 |
Where’s the cop? |
9:23 |
Im going to read a book |
9:24 |
so they just won the series. how lame. this was a lame series. where were the padres or brewers? |
9:24 |
Stephen Drew is alive, this game is over |
9:24 |
IS he shouting USA? |
9:24 |
: And now Lance Lynn is getting up.
|
9:25 |
So Wacha is human after all. |
9:25 |
lol at thinking lynn is the best option here |
9:25 |
: It’s an elimination game. You have to stop them from scoring. He’s like the 6th best option.
|
9:26 |
: Crushed again.
|
9:27 |
bad pitch, middle middle. |
9:27 |
cold the reason that didn’t go out? sounds like beltran/ellsbury gave up on a bit |
9:27 |
: Looked gone off the bat.
|
9:28 |
Oh maness is up as well |
9:28 |
His change is all world his curve is not |
9:28 |
Not sure why Wacha is still in |
9:29 |
Odds on seeing a lefty vs. Ortiz next? |
9:29 |
: Zero.
|
9:29 |
What is up with Matheny? I thought the Cardinals (as an org) were loaded with really smart people. |
9:29 |
: Even good managers have blind spots. This is Matheny’s.
|
9:30 |
Tim McCarver, making sense. |
9:30 |
red sox have plenty of smart people and farrell has still done some stupid shit this post season |
9:30 |
Blind Spot? This is end of the earth darkness |
9:31 |
: Matheny learns nothing, repeats mistake.
|
9:32 |
I think this is 1 of those spots Matt said the IBB was good. |
9:32 |
: It’s less bad now, because the diminishing returns on more runs.
|
9:32 |
: But really, this should be Choate getting Ortiz out instead.
|
9:32 |
Dave, I get the whole wanting an ex-player that the players relate to and trust as a manager. But when is some organization with nothing to lose going to hire someone really smart to manage? |
9:32 |
: The Rays already have.
|
9:33 |
What are the odds that anyone other than Ortiz wins the series MVP award? |
9:33 |
: -100%.
|
9:33 |
The math checks out |
9:34 |
Wife went to bed. Glad I still have people to talk to. Even if Cameron doesn’t post all my stuff! |
9:34 |
If David Ortiz openly injected steroids before coming to the plate and then killed a child with a foul ball he’d still win the MVP. |
9:34 |
Ted’s girlfriend is kind of a whore. |
9:34 |
Wait how can I find the FG box for this? The scores tab still has Monday’s game |
9:35 |
: Napoli comes through.
|
9:36 |
: And this game is getting very close to being over.
|
9:37 |
94.5% WE |
9:37 |
Game 3 seems like forever ago. |
9:38 |
I guess putting the game out of reach now lets the travel secretary arrange an earlier get away. Allow 90 minutes to Logan though as the party on the streets will tie up traffic |
9:38 |
Do we get a Shelby Miller sighting when the lead gets big enough? |
9:38 |
: I highly doubt it.
|
9:38 |
Bases loaded. And Lynn is really looking bad. And here comes Victorino. It must suck to be a Cards fan. |
9:39 |
yeah, 2 world series in the past decade sucks |
9:39 |
The intentional walk scored |
9:40 |
To the victorinos go the spoils |
9:40 |
: How has that not been a headline yet?
|
9:41 |
the outcome is currently the same as if ortiz had hit a home run |
9:41 |
It probably doesn’t matter now, but how do you not bring in your best pitcher? |
9:41 |
: Yeah, it’s an elimination game, you have to use your bullets here.
|
9:41 |
Carlos Martinez should have been pitching 20 minutes ago |
9:42 |
chances rosenthal doesn’t pitch tonight? |
9:42 |
: He’ll have to, because they’re going to burn through their arms getting 12 more outs.
|
9:42 |
Guys, you’re burying the lead. You like only have to listen to me for another hour or so and then I’m gone forever. |
9:43 |
I’m really disappointed this is a blow out. I was hoping the (possibly) last game of the season would hold my full attention until the very end, but I guess not. |
9:44 |
: Yeah, this is never how you want the season to end.
|
9:44 |
Not true |
9:44 |
unless you dislike the Cardinals… |
9:45 |
As a Cardinals fan, this is better than an Ortiz HR in the 7th to take a Cardinal lead away. |
9:45 |
Still want to see Koji pitch though |
9:45 |
: There’s no way they don’t let Koji finish this.
|
9:46 |
I’m kinda hoping Lackey falls apart, Cards tie in, 12 inning game, Ortiz walk-off IBB. |
9:48 |
Lackey can starting pitching to score #LOLz |
9:48 |
Drew. All bat, no glove |
9:48 |
: Haha, they ruled that a hit.
|
9:50 |
Will Team Fangraphs grow beards during the off-season to foster unity and cohesiveness? |
9:50 |
: We work better when we’re angry.
|
9:50 |
Wouldn’t having a beard make you angry? |
9:50 |
: No, I would love to grow a beard. I just can’t.
|
9:51 |
It’s not in Dave’s programming to grow facial hair. |
9:52 |
Why is everyone so confident?? I’m still very nervous… |
9:52 |
This game isn’t over. Not with the Cardinals. I’m a Nats fan. I’ve seen this before. Still lots of outs to get. |
9:52 |
Update your files and let’s grow |
9:53 |
: My TV just froze…
|
9:53 |
Beltran almost hit a dinger |
9:53 |
Beltran just missed that. |
9:54 |
Beltran fly out man on second tags up to 3rd |
9:54 |
Beltran not going to HOF now. |
9:54 |
: Okay, TV’s back
|
9:54 |
9:55 |
I feel bad for Beltran I really wanted him to get a ring. He won’t have many more chances if any. |
9:55 |
: Or he could just sign with Boston this winter.
|
9:56 |
Stick Beltran in LF over Gomes? |
9:56 |
: Part-time OF (when Victorino plays CF), part-time 1B, part-time DH.
|
9:56 |
At this point in that Cards-Nats game, it was 6-3. |
9:57 |
Let me check if Boston already has a full-time DH… |
9:57 |
: Dude isn’t invincible.
|
9:57 |
How would Beltran compare to Ells… moving Victorino back to center… huge downgrade? |
9:57 |
: Wouldn’t say huge. Probably +1 to +2 WAR.
|
9:58 |
Did you know bleeding rarely leads to death? Thanks Xarelto ad. |
9:59 |
Siegrist on the mound. |
9:59 |
: A few innings too late.
|
10:00 |
how is it 10pm. this game has been going on for 2 hours. good god. |
10:00 |
: Welcome to Red Sox games.
|
10:00 |
To be fair, that Xarelto ad lasted a good twenty minutes. |
10:01 |
Officer Steve! |
10:01 |
The slower the game the more we get to chat! |
10:01 |
Matheny has not had a great series but he can’t hit for his players. I guess you have to credit Red Sox pitching, but Lackey was very hittable the last couple of months and the Cardinals have made him look like a Cy Young pitcher. |
10:01 |
: The Cardinals offense relied heavily on sequencing, a fickle beast.
|
10:03 |
Is there any one reason why Red Sox games take so long to finish, or is it a combination of factors? It seems like its been this way for a long time….. |
10:03 |
: Their pitchers take an hour between pitches. Their hitters take a million pitches.
|
10:04 |
Adjust the batting gloves at least 4 times per PA. |
10:04 |
they lead the league in runs scored |
10:05 |
: Carpenter made himself a pretty good second baseman. That error was atypical.
|
10:05 |
Axford? Are they just throwing in the towel? |
10:05 |
: Wow.
|
10:05 |
: That just sums up this game for STL.
|
10:06 |
ARE YOU KIDDING |
10:06 |
What the hell was that |
10:06 |
FUNDAMENTALS! |
10:06 |
Oops |
10:06 |
I don’t like this game very much. |
10:06 |
What happened? No tv. |
10:06 |
: Ellsbury got picked off, but was safe on botched rundown.
|
10:07 |
Jean Segura is envious. |
10:07 |
The Cardinal Way I’ve heard so much about. |
10:07 |
This game is officially gone clownshoes. |
10:08 |
why do you guys put those huge ads up that cover the whole page, i find them realaly distracting |
10:08 |
: Because we have bills to pay.
|
10:08 |
: And everything on the site is free.
|
10:08 |
Get an adblocker. I can’t see ads. |
10:09 |
: Then you’re helping put places like FanGraphs like ours out of business.
|
10:09 |
I just want to say that I have adblocker, but don’t use it on your site. |
10:09 |
: Thanks, but other people deserve your support too.
|
10:09 |
Fangraphs+ = not free! |
10:09 |
: Okay, yes, not EVERYTHING is free…
|
10:09 |
: 99.99% of the things are free.
|
10:10 |
honestly the only ads that are really that bad are the ones that keep un-muting themselves |
10:10 |
: We work very hard to make sure we don’t have those on the site.
|
10:10 |
do you resent people with adblockers? |
10:11 |
: Resent, no. But I wish people wouldn’t use them.
|
10:11 |
What is Fangraphs+ anyway? Worth it if I don’t play/like fantasy? |
10:11 |
: We also put the articles we write for ESPN Insider there, since they have to be behind a paywall (ESPN would get mad at us giving them away…)
|
10:12 |
Maybe this is because I’m an old-school Sox fan, but this is precisely the late-game situation that scares the %$& out of me. With two outs Lackey coughs up four, lets Cards back in the game, Taztawa loads em up, Bogaerts boots a routine dribbler and… Viola! four months of misery. |
10:12 |
Gold Glove! |
10:13 |
not much hustle from the cards |
10:13 |
I think you might be confusing not much hustle with moves like a glacier over sandpaper. |
10:13 |
WE% is probably, if anything, understating how likely the Red Sox are to win this game… |
10:14 |
: Yep. Doesn’t include home field advantage, Uehara’s dominance, Cards using meh relievers.
|
10:14 |
Do any Fangraphs employees work there for their only job? |
10:15 |
: Eno, Jeff, Carson, Paul, and myself are all full-time employees. Toss in Appelman and there are six of us who are doing this for a living.
|
10:15 |
What’s WE% at now? |
10:15 |
: 99%
|
10:16 |
I was hoping Carson secretly had a side job at a French Arby’s. |
10:16 |
: I’d like a side of curly baguettes.
|
10:18 |
Do my eyes deceive me, or is Ortiz actually getting pitched to by a lefty? |
10:18 |
Upon turning adblock off, I have discovered that fangraphs t-shirts are a thing. And thus, advertisments have started depriving me of my money immediately (but it goes to a good cause, right!?). |
10:19 |
: Hey, look, Siegrist gets Ortiz out.
|
10:19 |
At least I get to watch Carlos Martinez pitch one more time… |
10:19 |
If you strike out the MVP, does that make you the MVP? |
10:20 |
Whenever I wear my fangraphs t-shirt I”m always on the look out for approving nods. Think I got one the other day. |
10:21 |
I find it amusing that the XXL shirts are sold out |
10:21 |
: I think we only made like 10 of them.
|
10:21 |
Carson uses them as tents |
10:22 |
Wasn’t there some sort of girlfriend joke or something that was going to be added to the t-shirts? |
10:22 |
: “We’re all going dateless!” Those got made, but not for public sale.
|
10:22 |
I want to buy Fangraphs pajamas that I can wear in my mom’s basement. |
10:22 |
Tony Reali, right? |
10:22 |
: Right.
|
10:23 |
: Not a terrific night for Napoli overall.
|
10:23 |
Questionable strike 3 |
10:24 |
The main reason he is “Little Pedro” is because of his last name, no? |
10:24 |
: Body frame.
|
10:24 |
: But it’s a terrible comp.
|
10:24 |
Not a terrific night for Napoli? I think he’s going to drink champagne! Great night!!! |
10:24 |
: Champagne is gross.
|
10:25 |
I bet Napoli drinks more beer tonight than champagne |
10:26 |
Actually, he’s probably more likely to pour the champagne on himself and his teammates, and then have chicken and beer. |
10:26 |
which Red Sox player has the worst hangover tomorrow? |
10:26 |
: Has to be Gomes, no
|
10:26 |
Wait, you guys write for ESPN Insider? I have it and I don’t think I’ve found any of your stuff. |
10:26 |
: Petriello, Swydan, and I have weekly columns for them. Use their search for our names and it should come up.
|
10:27 |
Pedroia, he’s tiny |
10:27 |
: This chick’s voice is obnoxious.
|
10:28 |
Should Lackey be out there? |
10:28 |
: Big enough lead that it’s fine. They can get Tazawa warm in the time it takes to make this a problem.
|
10:29 |
Lackey gonna yell at Farrell when he takes him out for Koji? |
10:30 |
Better not. Koji deserves to finish this |
10:30 |
Safe to say that everything in his life no longer sucks? |
10:30 |
Remember when the Sox were mocked for signing Lackey? |
10:30 |
Remember in 2011 when the Sox tried to trade for Bruce Chen the last week of the season, because they didn’t trust Lackey? He’s come a long way. |
10:31 |
Just started to read back from the start of tonight’s chat, Dave, and I’m very sorry to hear that your pup isn’t doing too well right now. We spoke at the seminar here in Boston back in Aug—I also have a golden lab and I was also unsure about adding a dog to the household. Now, I miss her big-time during the course of my eight-hour work day! I never thought I’d say this, but if something were to happen to her, I’d be beyond grief-stricken. Let us know how it goes tomorrow AM. |
10:32 |
: For what its worth, she seems to be doing a little better. Even managed to go outside and use the bushes. Not throwing up anymore. Progress!
|
10:32 |
2 out rally. |
10:33 |
Descalso scores there if he’s sent, like, 99/100 times… |
10:33 |
: Score dictates to be safe.
|
10:33 |
If the Cardinals came back to win this game, where would it rank in all-time postseason comebacks? |
10:33 |
: The best ever.
|
10:33 |
OH god no. Not Beltran. |
10:33 |
Guy in the front row down the left field line is wearing a Villanova hat. |
10:33 |
Only like the 4th worst loss in Red Sox postseason history, really |
10:34 |
Last batter either way for Lackey surely. |
10:34 |
: Would think so, yes.
|
10:34 |
: Beltran, of course.
|
10:35 |
HR here would make things very interesting. |
10:35 |
well, it’s pretty over…but not over over |
10:35 |
“This is my guy” -Lackey |
10:35 |
Leaving him in? Oh-kay… |
10:35 |
Wow |
10:35 |
Grady Little is that you> |
10:36 |
I don’t like this |
10:36 |
: This is a little nutty.
|
10:37 |
I’ve never felt worse about a 97% WE. |
10:37 |
Hoem run please. I want to watch a game! |
10:37 |
Probalby shouldn’t ask the pitcher if he wants to come out. |
10:38 |
I am about to stress eat this entire box of Cheez-Its |
10:38 |
TYING RUN IS ON DECK |
10:39 |
Guess he wasn’t your guy John |
10:39 |
I stress-ate some carrots, does that count? |
10:39 |
I like staring at hot chicks in the stands as much as anyone, but for the love of God, Fox, there is a time and a place for everything. |
10:39 |
I hope it’s regular Cheez-its, they make waaay too many flavors now, mostly terrible |
10:39 |
RISP stats incoming. Craig batted 1.200 with 2 outs and RISP this decade. |
10:39 |
Family sized box of White Cheddar! |
10:39 |
I feel better about a walk than pressing down the middle |
10:39 |
I went from eating 0 chips at the start of this inning to about a million during it. |
10:40 |
So “This is my guy” is Beardese for “I am going to walk Matt Holliday to make this game very interesting.” |
10:40 |
I went through a bag of fun size Twix I was going to hand out for Halloween… |
10:40 |
This is what happens when no one smokes cigarettes anymore: stress eating! Just light em up, fellas. Live the good life. |
10:40 |
: I think you might light a mup.
|
10:41 |
Boston citizens agree to give out champagne for Halloween tomorrow if Red Sox win |
10:41 |
pretty sure a big mac with a milkshake and large fry is better for you than a pack of smokes |
10:42 |
Tazawa is known for throwing the HR ball on occasion |
10:42 |
The right thing to do is to bring in Koji here |
10:43 |
: In theory, agree, but probably something to the idea that he wouldn’t be prepared to pitch now.
|
10:43 |
See, easy stuff. |
10:43 |
: So the Cardinals will lose because they failed miserably at the thing they succeeded at more than anyone ever all season long.
|
10:44 |
Because that thing they succeeded at is hard to succeed at for 7 months |
10:44 |
God Bless Victorino, outfielder that I love. |
10:45 |
The rest of the food in the house is safe for now… |
10:45 |
That’s nt the uniforms they wear on Glee’ |
10:45 |
Wow . . . these guys are really good. I’m . . . I’m tearing up. |
10:45 |
Ha, “Grady Little” is trending worldwide on Twitter. |
10:45 |
: I’m not a huge fan of all these in-game songs, but that was pretty great.
|
10:47 |
The best thing about this WS being over: never having to hear about Jeremy or his data bill ever again! |
10:47 |
I bet Jeremy is a Mets fan. |
10:48 |
anyone else hoping Jeremy has been Taken on his trip to Europe? |
10:49 |
VICTORINO JUST DODGED A PITCH. WHAT AN INCREDIBLE NIGHT. |
10:49 |
Gomes dives there |
10:50 |
A Choate sighting! |
10:51 |
If 1 more Card reaches…Carlos Beltran could be the last out of this World Series. |
10:51 |
Dave, do you think the Cubs will win the WS in my lifetime (born 1990)? This time of the year is kinda sad for me… |
10:51 |
: The Cubs future has to be top 5 in baseball. Be hopeful.
|
10:51 |
Dave, here’s a teaching moment for “regression to the mean.” Note the term “mean,” or average. The Cardinals were able to sequence their offense at a better than average rate all season. Even assuming that they are literally average at this “skill” or that no such “skill” exists, they wouldn’t be expected to leave 9 men on base. They were not “due” for this and this is not their performance “evening out” or “regressing to the mean.” |
10:52 |
: Yes, I know. You just described the gambler’s fallacy. Everyone here is familiar with that. Thank you.
|
10:52 |
Could that comment by Penny Lane be any more condescending? |
10:52 |
: I don’t think so, no.
|
10:53 |
Seriously, I teach that to my fifth graders |
10:53 |
The Cubs have Theo. You must believe, Guy. |
10:53 |
2 Shanes in this series. For reference, I searched “Shane” in fangraphs database. It is a recent name I guess, because there wasn’t a single one pre 1988, and there have been like 20 since then. Was a Beatle named “Shane” and I didn’t know it? |
10:54 |
There was a 50s (?) western called Shane! |
10:54 |
: Wasn’t he a bad guy in the lone ranger?
|
10:55 |
1953, Alan Ladd. Played the main character in ‘Shane.’ Shane was a winner, a la Jonny Gomes. Had the ‘It’ factor. |
10:56 |
: All these American Idol kids look like they just walked out of a Starbucks.
|
10:56 |
Oh man….no more baseball…American Idol time. #ThisIsRealSad |
10:56 |
CLUBHOUSE CONFIDENTIAL! |
10:56 |
: My first appearance is next Friday, FYI.
|
10:56 |
wait, Workman? |
10:57 |
: Tazawa died, remember?
|
10:57 |
Will you wear a vest again Dave? |
10:57 |
: I don’t own any vests.
|
10:57 |
Practice blinking. |
10:57 |
: That would make it less fun for all of you.
