Neil Weinberg: Hey everyone! I’ll be handling the live blog duties this evening. If you don’t know who I am, we have like four hours to get acquainted. First time chatting along with a game since joining FG, so we’ll see how it goes!
7:59 |
Neil Weinberg: Mo’Ne is awesome.
7:59 |
Comment From DavidWhy no Library update this week?
8:00 |
Neil Weinberg: There was! Sorry, the IG post just didn’t run. Pitch F/X resources were updated to include Savant, etc.
8:00 |
Comment From RukiGot a rooting interest tonight?
8:00 |
Neil Weinberg: I’m a Tigers fan, so the Tigers have inflicted pain, and seeing the Royals do well is confusing. So just hoping for good baseball
8:02 |
Comment From Pale HoseThis expect this live blog to be the best part of my day. No pressure.
8:02 |
Neil Weinberg: That seems like a lot of pressure!
8:02 |
Comment From Cave DameronIs starting Vogelsong the right decision (over MadBum on shrot rest or Petit)?
8:03 |
Neil Weinberg: I think Vogey is fine here because he and Petit are going to split the game, I would imagine. Order doesn’t matter too much, probably. I think full rest for Madison tomorrow and relief in Game 7 is a slightly better move. But some of that depends on his physical condition, which I dont know
8:03 |
Comment From HelberI have calculus finals two days from now… I should be studying, instead I’m watching WS Game 4… What can I do? I love baseball too much
8:04 |
Neil Weinberg: Important to integrate your hobbies. Zing.
8:04 |
Comment From yostin and tostinwhatever you derive enjoyment from, do that
8:04 |
Neil Weinberg: Calculus jokes FTW
8:05 |
Neil Weinberg: Appears as if Jeff Z. is joining us, although I cannot confirm these reports.
8:05 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Hi everyone, I will jump in and help Neil while rooting for the Royals. If I disappear when Yost does something stupid, I probably went for another beer.
8:06 |
Jeff Zimmerman: I may be a bit slow, I spent the after watching K-State shut out Texas in the sun
8:07 |
Comment From GaryHow big a factor was the first letter of his last name in the determination of starting Vogelsong tonight?
8:08 |
Neil Weinberg: Seems pretty important! Two V’s
8:08 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Still worst graphic ever.
8:09 |
Comment From ChrisSeems like a waste of resources to spray paint the positions on the field like that.
8:09 |
Comment From GaryWhat happens if you both select the same comment to publish at the same time? Chaos I assume.
8:09 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Especially with all the shifting
8:09 |
Comment From DavidWould it have been advisable for Bochy to start Bumgarner and limit him 70 pitchers for 5 innings (two times through the order) and bring him back in Game 7. Better than starting Vogelsong right?
8:10 |
Neil Weinberg: I’m not so sure. He’ll pitch in game 5 for sure and game 7 if they get there. Not sure tired Bumgarner is better than the alternative.
8:10 |
Comment From yostin and tostintwo Vs makes a W … now it all makes sense
8:11 |
Comment From The Big DipperAre you related to Max Weinberg?
8:11 |
Neil Weinberg: No, but I tell people he’s my uncle as a joke.
8:11 |
Comment From The Big DipperHaha I would too
8:11 |
Neil Weinberg: Nice receiving from Posey.
8:12 |
Comment From YostedThat entire area around 1st looks soggy as can be, wonder if the story is true.
8:12 |
Neil Weinberg: Beat guys said they watered heavily.
8:13 |
Comment From Cave DameronJeff, did you go to get a beer already?
8:13 |
Neil Weinberg: I think it’s pretty funny that they rotated a guy to the replay booth. He flew to another city even though dozens of umpires are at home
8:13 |
Comment From DanLooking at the Giants bench, I think the second pinch hitter after Morse should be Bumgarner
8:13 |
Neil Weinberg: At least it isn’t the Tigers bench.
8:13 |
Jeff Zimmerman: I started with one, but I am used to the team not hitting.
8:15 |
Comment From FishFor those interested: Ted Barrett calls basically a perfect zone against righties, and a little low against lefties (with the lefty strike)
8:15 |
Comment From FishThat’s using jeff’s site!
8:16 |
Comment From BDFAre you related to this guy Josh Weinberg I new in 7th grade? This was in Miami.
8:16 |
Neil Weinberg: I am not, but we can play this game long enough and find a relative.
8:17 |
Comment From DavidJeff; your site seems so great, but it’s extremely hard to use, IMO. Can you do a piece explaining how everything works? Thanks.
8:18 |
Jeff Zimmerman: I usually the info is at the bottom or an original article, but I agree. I have a ton to do like get out the 2014 DL data.
8:18 |
Comment From GaryIt’s not actually against the rules to do something like pack the dirt looser to slow down the opponent’s running game is it?
8:18 |
Neil Weinberg: No, I don’t think so.
8:19 |
Neil Weinberg: Teams often cut the grass to help their style of play
8:19 |
Jeff Zimmerman: No, teams will not cut the grass with groundball pitchers
8:21 |
Comment From DavidApologies if this has been asked before but what in the world is that bunting-covered section in the left field corner? Something for press?
8:21 |
Neil Weinberg: I think there’s an aux press box out there. Anyone confirm?
8:22 |
Comment From Davidyep, indeed it is.
8:22 |
Comment From The Big DipperThe Royals love bunting so much they had one put up in San Francisco
8:22 |
Comment From DavidThey had to remove every second row to put the tables in for the press
8:23 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Not good.
8:23 |
Neil Weinberg: That was almost a disaster twice.
8:24 |
Comment From The Big DipperWow look at that hang time
8:25 |
Comment From ChrisDirector: Zoom in on that dirt! Enhance! I want more dirt shots, dammit!
8:25 |
Neil Weinberg: Good reminder about hard baseball is: The swing Posey took on that first pitch against an average pitcher.
8:27 |
Comment From DanMight as well steal home now
8:27 |
Comment From nickHow much could we raise if we began a Kickstarter to put MGL in the FOX booth for one game.
8:27 |
Neil Weinberg: I would watch that, but I think it would end in a fist fight pretty quickly.
8:27 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Not sure, but I would love to have different audio feeds, especially the home and away radio feeds
8:28 |
Comment From FishMGL and Curt Schilling
8:28 |
Neil Weinberg: Runs will be difficult to score against both #4 pitchers, based on the first innings, per announcers.
8:29 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Jeez, I am pretty ready for beer two now
8:29 |
Comment From WCMGL, Tom Tango, and any of you guys for broadcasters please.
8:30 |
Jeff Zimmerman: I would not be good, too many uuhhhh’s between words
8:30 |
Neil Weinberg: Would be a lot of dead air, though
8:30 |
Neil Weinberg: No one wants to hear my voice.
8:30 |
Comment From ConfusedSorry but who is MGL?
8:30 |
Neil Weinberg: Mitchell Lichtman
8:30 |
Comment From WCbetter than what HR has to offer!!
8:31 |
Comment From nickNo it doesn’t work unless they keep HR
8:31 |
Neil Weinberg: Sabermetric researcher, co-author of The Book
8:31 |
Neil Weinberg: That was a weird play.
8:31 |
Neil Weinberg: I’m not sure anyone did anything wrong, is Pence just blazing fast?
8:32 |
Neil Weinberg: Moose froze the runner, but that half second cost him.
8:32 |
Comment From The Big DipperLooked like infante had to reach a little bit too
8:32 |
Comment From SkorePence almost never gets doubled up, quite fast out of the box
8:32 |
Neil Weinberg: Biggio, 1997. Go look at his stat line. No GIDP.
8:32 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Pence has decent speed. I would love to know Pence to 1B on that hit.
8:32 |
Comment From Pale HosePence isn’t that fast. He just does this weird thing where he slows everyone else down.
8:33 |
Neil Weinberg: I bet we get StatCast on that
8:33 |
Neil Weinberg: I was about to link this!
8:34 |
Comment From The Big DipperWhen will statcast make it’s way into the broadcasts?
8:34 |
Neil Weinberg: Yeah, MLB will make sure it does even if the broadcasters don’t love it
8:34 |
Comment From GaryThe people I usually text my snarky remarks about games aren’t watching anymore so you guys are going to have to put up with me.
8:37 |
Neil Weinberg: Shift works. Feel obligated to point it out because broadcasters only say when it fails
8:38 |
Comment From Pale HoseEno has been talking about Vogelsong’s increased velocity in the postseason. Is it fair to raise his baseline expectation based on the increased velo?
8:38 |
Neil Weinberg: Probably a bit.
8:39 |
Neil Weinberg: On that replay, Infante’s throwing hand needs to be closer to the glove when receiving
8:39 |
Comment From WCWish broadcasters would use defensive metrics more accurately and often too. When will DRS/UZR incorporate shifts?
8:39 |
Neil Weinberg: I think they want to fix that this offseason, but I don’t know if it’s for sure
8:40 |
Jeff Zimmerman: They wont’ without doing it first during the season.
8:41 |
Neil Weinberg: I thought he broke that on his back but the ball did it
8:41 |
Comment From haroldwhile everyone on campus is out in Halloween costumes, ive decided to remain in and watch baseball. dedication right there.
8:42 |
Comment From ChrisMaybe it’s too much to expect Bumgarner to pitch on short rest, but then again, this IS the World Series.
8:42 |
Neil Weinberg: It’s about who will be most effective.
8:42 |
Neil Weinberg: You don’t hold him back to protect him, you do it because pitchers do worse on short rest
8:43 |
Jeff Zimmerman: I have no problem with it.
8:43 |
Comment From DouggyWhat is the classification of short rest? 3 days? Because Bumgarner has pitched a ton on 4 days rest and has been good http://www.baseball-referen…
8:44 |
Comment From The Big Dippershould have pinch hit herrera there
8:44 |
Neil Weinberg: Raining? This could get interesting.
8:45 |
Comment From FishIf this goes into a delay I’m going to be kinda bummed
8:45 |
Neil Weinberg: If there is a two hour rain delay this chat will continue.
8:46 |
Comment From EvanRain in the forecast was an additional risk to starting Bumgarner on short rest.
8:46 |
Comment From The Real DanWhat’s your favorite kind of soup?
8:47 |
Jeff Zimmerman: French Onion
8:47 |
Neil Weinberg: I like this sausage/potato/kale thing. Or chicken noodle
8:47 |
Neil Weinberg: SoupGraphs
8:47 |
Comment From GaryI would read soupgraphs. Get it going.
8:48 |
Neil Weinberg: Why do you think we’ve removing NotGraphs? Room for soup!
8:48 |
Comment From The Big DipperIf you start analyzing desserts you could call it pie graphs
8:49 |
Neil Weinberg: /remembers there is baseball on TV, stops thinking about soup
8:50 |
Jeff Zimmerman: My eyes !!!!!!!!!!!! That shirt
8:50 |
Neil Weinberg: That ball was too easy to catch. Wanted Dyson to do something crazy
8:50 |
Comment From DouggyNeil, do you read any Bless You Boys?
8:51 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Marlins man with a twisted hat
8:51 |
Comment From GaryMy wife said the same thing Jeff. You have an excellent sense of feminine fashionability.
8:51 |
Comment From LawdogWho advised Erin Andrews that “homely” was the best look?
8:51 |
Neil Weinberg: For sure. They are my favorite Tigers blog that I don’t own.
8:51 |
Comment From Hartdont look at the shirt, jeff
8:52 |
Neil Weinberg: I would love MLB to institute the double base at first like in softball, just for the hot takes.
8:52 |
Comment From Douggy“favorite Tigers blog that I don’t own”… I picture you as a blog mogul now Neil.
8:52 |
Comment From a eskpertit takes real passion to wear a grandmother sweater on National TV
8:52 |
Comment From Nile WeengrabYeah – eyes up top, JEFF!
8:52 |
Comment From GaryThat’s my number one currently desired rule change. The basepath is defined as outside the foul line from home to first so why should you have to run back into play to touch the base!
8:53 |
Neil Weinberg: The base line at first is so weird.
8:54 |
Comment From BDFEmpire going to be great or terrible? Really can’t tell.
8:54 |
Neil Weinberg: I think terrible?
8:54 |
Comment From Sgt. PepperIs Gotham actually good
8:54 |
Neil Weinberg: Watched one ep, will watch another. TVGraphs
8:55 |
Neil Weinberg: AL Pitcher Hitting TM
8:55 |
Comment From a eskpertWhat about a blog for the artistic appreciation of statistical estimators: GraphGraphs
8:56 |
Comment From The Real DanThis has been a productive few innings. We’ve created SoupGraphs, TVGraphs, GraphGraphs, and PieGraphs.
8:56 |
Neil Weinberg: Can’t tell if sarcasm or genuine happiness
8:57 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Super at bat by Vargas
8:57 |
Neil Weinberg: I retract my joke about Vargas hitting
8:58 |
Neil Weinberg: Second time through the order starts now. Gotta be ready to get Petit up if things get dicey
8:58 |
Comment From a eskpertVargas to an NL team?
8:58 |
Neil Weinberg: Royals think they are an NL team, so it’s cool. Zing!
8:59 |
Comment From DouggyWe’re possibly 26 or so hours away from the death of NotGraphs 🙁
8:59 |
Neil Weinberg: It’s getting a non-FG home!
8:59 |
Comment From Evan“Good bullpen session” is the in-season equivalent of “best shape of my life” and “added a new pitch.”
8:59 |
Comment From HankWhen was the last time someone had a BAD bullpen session? It’s like saying the “surgery went well”
8:59 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Marlins man covers up
9:00 |
Neil Weinberg: Fun fact, I would argue Miguel Cabrera turns 3-6-3 better than anyone
9:00 |
Comment From Douggy” It’s getting a non-FG home!” For real? Did I miss this? Where’s it going or TBA?
9:00 |
Comment From Hartbank notes harpa!
9:01 |
Comment From WCFreeman and Simmons turn a mean DP I would argue as well 🙂
9:02 |
Neil Weinberg: I almost thought FOX was showing us a direct shot of the sun
9:03 |
Neil Weinberg: I think you might have to PH for Vogey to start the 3rd, but odds of that are really low.
9:03 |
Jeff Zimmerman: My kids are headed to bed, they will no longer cover up HR and JB. Time to get annoyed
9:03 |
Comment From JZCan we switch Lavar Burton for Harold Reynolds?
9:03 |
Neil Weinberg: My niece met him last week! Was adorable
9:03 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Good throw? It was off by 3-4 feet
9:04 |
Neil Weinberg: It was the proper height!
9:04 |
Comment From Hartnot good throw!
9:04 |
Comment From BDFReynolds couldn’t be wronger, that was a bad throw by Posey.
9:04 |
Comment From WCHorrible throw! Disaster averted by an inch.
9:05 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Agree Neil.
9:05 |
Comment From 34he threw it to the correct base, therefore gold star, good throw
9:06 |
Neil Weinberg: I would double switch in Petit right here, but I am not “allowed to make lineup changes” because I’m a blogger
9:06 |
Jeff Zimmerman: In Play, Run(s)
9:06 |
Comment From Garyugly play by vogelsong there. Have to know where the base is.
9:06 |
Comment From ChrisVOGELSONG WHAT’RE YOU DOING?!? COVER
9:07 |
Comment From GaryThat’s why they need the safety bag right there!
9:07 |
Neil Weinberg: Vogey needs to look to the base, then Belt, then back to the base. Just had no idea where he was
9:08 |
Comment From GuestI don’t understand why the running lane to first is completely in foul territory, but the base is completely in fair territory.
9:09 |
Comment From DouggyVogy has been bad since Marlins guy poncho’d up
9:09 |
Neil Weinberg: For real, Petit should have pitched to the lefties.
9:10 |
Comment From NickNeil, its the third inning. You really want to go to the pen this early?
9:10 |
Neil Weinberg: Yeah. He’s also due up first next inning
9:10 |
Jeff Zimmerman: I think the Giants wanted to PH for Volgy. I would bring in another RP and then PH for them
9:11 |
Jeff Zimmerman: good move with Machi
9:11 |
Neil Weinberg: Yeah, that works too. Either way, he needs to come out before he bats
9:12 |
Comment From ChrisDid Bruce Bochy shave? When did this happen?
9:12 |
Comment From JZare those sliding sounds real or pumped in by some sound tech?
9:12 |
Neil Weinberg: mics on the base
9:13 |
Jeff Zimmerman: In Play, Run(s)
9:13 |
Neil Weinberg: You don’t often see Bochy get caught like that.
9:14 |
Comment From GaryI wonder if America is ready for Infante, World Series MVP.
9:14 |
Comment From The Big DipperHe’s an inspiration for little infants everywhere
9:14 |
Neil Weinberg: Wow he really doesn’t want to burn a reliever.
9:15 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Not good when Perez can’t find 1 of 3 pitches to swing at
9:16 |
Comment From HankHow many 3-0 counts you think Perez has had this year?
9:16 |
Neil Weinberg: 15 I think?
9:16 |
Comment From FishBochy: best manager ev – woops
9:16 |
Comment From The Real DanSALVY
9:16 |
Comment From The Big DipperBruce Yostchy
9:17 |
Comment From 34none of this is happening if Josh Willingham’s 9th inning bloop goes foul in the wildcard game
9:18 |
Neil Weinberg: WE is 81.8% for Royals.
9:18 |
Comment From Zen Madman“Neil, its the third inning. You really want to go to the pen this early?” Maybe that would’ve been a good idea.
9:19 |
Comment From GS1“none of this is happening if Josh Willingham’s 9th inning bloop goes foul in the wildcard game” – Post Hoc Fallacy
9:19 |
Neil Weinberg: Not really, because the Royals would have been eliminated right?
9:19 |
Neil Weinberg: Or was there one out?
9:20 |
Neil Weinberg: Oh right, foul/fair, not caught/lands
9:20 |
Comment From JimboNo Strickland here?
9:21 |
Neil Weinberg: Royals fan ^^^
9:21 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Throw fire at a fire
9:22 |
Comment From DavidIt’s Dyson. Even Strickland could keep that in the park
9:22 |
Neil Weinberg: Famous last words 🙂
9:22 |
Comment From 34This series needs to feature a Dyson splash hit to complete the weirdness.
9:23 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Or a Vargas slam
9:23 |
Comment From FishOr a Vargas one
9:23 |
Comment From Smartish Paceeither way: fair/foul, caught/lands, it’s Post Hoc fallacy
9:24 |
Neil Weinberg: Yeah, I was misremembering the situation.
9:24 |
Comment From GS1Pitchers Dyson has homered off of: Kevin Slowey, Dan Haren, Phil Hughes, Dylan Axelrod
9:24 |
Neil Weinberg: So many comments about Vargas HR
9:25 |
Comment From RyanThe Royals should pinch hit here, right?
9:25 |
Neil Weinberg: I think, technically, yes.
9:26 |
Comment From neddyPinch hit who? The mighty Aoki?
9:26 |
Neil Weinberg: That was fun.
9:27 |
Comment From RukiXD Vargas freezing = I WANT THAT GIF/PIC
9:27 |
Jeff Zimmerman: I think we all do
9:27 |
Neil Weinberg: Might need Sullivan to do a Vargas hitting post.
9:29 |
Neil Weinberg: Wife opened bag of pretzels. Dog woke up immediately.
9:29 |
Comment From JackIf the Royals win tonight, what are the odds of getting to Game 6? Game 7?
9:29 |
Neil Weinberg: 50/50, then like 25/75
9:30 |
Comment From GuestI can accurately measure the current leverage index by whether or not my dog decides he needs to go outside.
9:30 |
Neil Weinberg: this is so true
9:32 |
Jeff Zimmerman: See, keeping Volgy in was so worth it.
9:33 |
Neil Weinberg: Royals in same spot. Get Duffy/Finnegan up now.
9:33 |
Comment From GaryShould have brought in Danny Duffy so we get to hear the analysts talk about the first ever Duffy v Duffy in the world series.
9:34 |
Neil Weinberg: Dog has moved on top of me. Confirms importance of moment in the game.
9:35 |
Comment From RyanI think Bochy stuck with Vogelsong because he saw today’s FG article about Vogelson’s velocity– this is what paying attention to the statheads does!
9:35 |
Jeff Zimmerman: #blameEno
9:36 |
Comment From MattCompletely unrealistic for Twins fans to hope for Maddon as the next manager?
9:36 |
Neil Weinberg: Not crazy.
9:36 |
Neil Weinberg: Not likely, but not crazy.
9:36 |
Jeff Zimmerman: I think so, but hope away
9:37 |
Comment From MartinDo the Royals have a long relief guy available? It would probably be preferable to Herrera throwing 30 pitches again, right?
9:38 |
Comment From HankYou go Wade Davis for 2 innings tonight if needed no?
9:38 |
Comment From David S.Dog is asleep. Nothing exciting will happen. Expect a bathroom break if Buster singles
9:38 |
Neil Weinberg: Get the leash.
9:39 |
Neil Weinberg: Pence is gonna tie it.
9:39 |
Neil Weinberg: That’s how Pence works.
9:39 |
Comment From 34is it just me or is it weird that Yost turns to Herrara for over 1 inning more than Davis? Seems Davis would be the obvious choice for longer relief outings.
9:40 |
Neil Weinberg: Supposedly Davis likes the idea of one inning only, but that might not be true
9:40 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Herrera recovers faster according to the pitchers and Yost
9:40 |
Neil Weinberg: So, I don’t want to be that guy, but I recommended they have someone warming this inning.
9:41 |
Comment From GaryIt’s a good thing the Dodgers didn’t make it to play the royals. There would be dozens of bench clearing brawls between Mattingly’s hypersensitivity and the Royals tendency to pitch up and in.
9:41 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Timmah !!!!
9:42 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Panda has been watching too many Perez at bats
9:42 |
Neil Weinberg: Not exactly a good at bat. Or an okay one.
9:43 |
Comment From MattAt some point you’d think Panda would be better off just facing lefties from the left side?
9:43 |
Comment From The Real DanWho likes golf ball pitches more–Panda or Vlad?
9:43 |
Comment From tomSo during the break, what do you think of Ray owner Stuart Sternberg’s comments about moving the team to Montreal?
9:44 |
Neil Weinberg: Probably just trying to get a new stadium in TB
9:44 |
Comment From easywhencheesy. What comes first, Rays move or expansion?
9:45 |
Neil Weinberg: Expansion, Rays will get a new park but stay in TB, if I’m betting
9:45 |
Comment From Garyit just seems clear that TB area isn’t capable of supporting a team. I wish they would move.
9:45 |
Neil Weinberg: Aren’t their TV ratings good?
9:45 |
Comment From BOnly 3 innings complete and almost 2 hours in? Hope those AFL rules get implemented.
9:45 |
Neil Weinberg: Park is lame and not in agood location, right?
9:46 |
Comment From The Big DipperMost likely destination for an expansion team? Charlotte? Brooklyn? North Dakota?
9:46 |
Neil Weinberg: Portland. Maybe San Antonio/Austin?
9:46 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Des Moines, no one in Iowa gets to watch baseball right now with the blackout rules already
9:47 |
Comment From BDes Moines is seeing better baseball than Chicago!
9:48 |
Comment From WillieBloomquistButtCystAustin is too small to support an MLB team.
9:48 |
Neil Weinberg: Austin is the biggest city without a pro team, right?
9:49 |
Neil Weinberg: (all four sports)
9:49 |
Neil Weinberg: It is hard to hit HR in SF, news at 11
9:49 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Is Tucson close?
9:50 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Nope, but Vegas is close
9:50 |
Comment From RukiAustin does have a professional sports team: The Texas Longhorns. 😉
9:51 |
Neil Weinberg: Soup and Geography.

9:51 |
Comment From Timit’s a crime that Petit has only pitched 9 innings this post season

Neil Weinberg: I prefer weird parks
9:53 |
Comment From ChrisThe higher the aLI, the more exciting the game, yes? Is that also true for aWE, or is that an inverse relationship?
9:53 |
Jeff Zimmerman: I love unique ones, especially with some climate variations
9:53 |
Neil Weinberg: You want a WE of close to 50% for excitement
9:53 |
Comment From RyanDo the Astros still have the weird CF hill? That can go.
9:53 |
Neil Weinberg: There is a dog in the cove!
9:54 |
Jeff Zimmerman: with a fire
9:55 |
Comment From Timwhy are they even discussing pinch hitting for Petit!
9:55 |
Jeff Zimmerman: I don’t think they know how good he is
9:55 |
Neil Weinberg: If there are men on base you probably have to…
9:56 |
Comment From JZI pretty much just want to watch Vargas bat now that I know his BA was higher than Tulo’s in college when they were on the same team.
9:57 |
Neil Weinberg: Vargas has four more batters max, but probably fewer.
9:58 |
Comment From GS1Jeff have you pitched against anybody in this series?

10:02 |
Comment From 34they should go for the double steal here, because lol
10:02 |
Jeff Zimmerman: It would work, I see Salvy air mailing the throw
10:03 |
Comment From JimboPerez could tag Petit himself if he tried to steal 2nd
10:03 |
Jeff Zimmerman: No way, Salvy could be the slowest everyday player in the game, he is slower than Butler
10:03 |
Comment From RukiPerez would miss the base if he tried to tag Petit himself, though.
10:04 |
Neil Weinberg: We are going to be here for a long time. Someone bring me my laptop charger.
10:04 |
Comment From The Big DipperMan I can’t wait until these elections are over
10:04 |
Neil Weinberg: I live in NC. It is madness.
10:06 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Usually, I see none of them, but the normal Republicans winners (Gov and Senate) are in tight races here in Kansas. It sucks
10:06 |

10:09 |
Comment From The Big DipperOk Google, why is it called a bullpen?

10:13 |
Jeff Zimmerman: and the Royals have him for another 3 seasons
10:15 |
Neil Weinberg: Halfway done in 2 hours. That’s not that bad, said a person living in 2014.

10:20 |
Comment From The Big DipperIf Mo’ne is throwing 85 by the time she’s a senior do you think she will get drafted?
10:20 |
Neil Weinberg: She wants to play basketball, but I would love to see it.
10:21 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Maybe, but doubt it. BTW, I highly recommend the Sports Gene. Great stuff in there on throwing differences between males and females
10:23 |
Neil Weinberg: Mentioning reliever W-L record. What’s the point?
10:23 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Teams waste picks all the time, Neil’s Tigers almost always draft a guy from Bishop Carroll High School in Wichita with their last pick because some in the scouting department went there.
10:24 |
Neil Weinberg: Right. Tigers draft family members all the time.
10:25 |
Jeff Zimmerman: I saw their 2014 14th and 40th round pick playing this past Friday

10:27 |
Neil Weinberg: Have any of you met me?! I could be fake.
10:29 |
Comment From FishYeah but we chat with you
10:29 |
Neil Weinberg: I can confirm I have exchanged written words with Appelman.
10:29 |
Neil Weinberg: Hitting Panda on the right side would be a giant favor. Zing.
10:30 |
Neil Weinberg: Of course.
10:31 |
Neil Weinberg: This has the feel of an 18 inning game.
10:31 |
Neil Weinberg: @MLB handle just made an Anchorman reference.
10:32 |
Neil Weinberg: At some point, you just tell HDH to get all of the outs.
10:33 |
Comment From SantiagoIf you could, would you bring Davis now?
10:34 |
Jeff Zimmerman: I am pretty much just throwing stuff, so you going solo Neil
10:35 |
Neil Weinberg: This might get ugly.

10:36 |
Neil Weinberg: Everything about that was great.
10:36 |

10:43 |
Neil Weinberg: Harold can’t get over Hunter Pence knowing how to tag up.
10:43 |
Neil Weinberg: What percentage of players fail to tag there? 5%?
10:43 |
Jeff Zimmerman: If even that high
10:44 |
Neil Weinberg: Dyson on base! Steal?!
10:44 |
Neil Weinberg: Don’t bunt. Steal second.
10:44 |
Jeff Zimmerman: I always consider an Aoki at bat a success if he stays on his feet.
10:45 |
Comment From mtswWe have any data in how much of an advantage a batter gains from having an elite base stealer on 1st via distracting the pitcher? Worth .025 points of BA?
10:45 |
Neil Weinberg: Pretty sure the evidence says the opposite. Distracts hitter. But I’m not 100%
10:46 |
Jeff Zimmerman: It is in The Book, but usually it makes the hitter worse because they stand around too much
10:46 |
Neil Weinberg: Huge. #analysis
10:47 |
Comment From The Big Dippersuccess by your definition jeff

10:49 |
Comment From The Big DipperHorrible bosses 2? There was a horrible bosses 1? This looks like the worst movie ever.
10:49 |
Neil Weinberg: I would go Davis-Herrara-Holland tonight, because you need someone ready behind Duffy and Herrara probably doesn’t have the rope.
10:50 |
Comment From :þHerrera. With an e.

10:50 |
Neil Weinberg: Typos gonna typo

10:52 |
Comment From The Big Dipperwhy does he get tossed out?
10:52 |
Neil Weinberg: He would be very outspoken when the others said silly things.
10:52 |
Comment From TimI would LOVE to hear an mgl broadcast
10:52 |
Neil Weinberg: Follow him on Twitter. Basically the same.

11:04 |
Neil Weinberg: I must say, this is what it’s like to be a Tigers fan.
11:05 |
Jeff Zimmerman: The Tigers usually wait until the 8th or 9th to break down
11:05 |
Neil Weinberg: Weird part is that this is Aaron Crow’s inning
11:06 |
Comment From JZexcept the tigers do it with their best relievers
11:06 |
Comment From Guestso should escobar have tried for the dp on pence’s grounder?

11:14 |
Neil Weinberg: BABIP gods got a hold of that BWW button

Jeff Zimmerman: We told you so

11:23 |
Neil Weinberg: Wait, you tricked me…
11:24 |
Comment From MattAre teams just punting the 7th+ innings? Giants brought in Lincecum the other night. Royals stuck with Finnegan. Dave said the WE vs. the Royal bullpen in the 6th with a lead was close to 0 with the “Big Three
11:24 |
Comment From GuestSo only Tim Collins left if the Royals don’t want to use Davis or Holland. Any chance we see a position player pitch?
11:25 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Mitch Maier is no longer on the team
11:25 |
Neil Weinberg: Been thinking about this. Royals probably decided that fresh pen tomorrow is better than trying to win? That’s my best guess, but I don’t know
11:26 |
Comment From Ned Yostwell, we also want to save the big three for extra innings tonight
11:26 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Against Bum? They needed to win today

Neil Weinberg: That was a bad joke and I feel bad
11:30 |
Jeff Zimmerman: /still finding stuff to throw
11:32 |
Neil Weinberg: At 6 runs, it’s over, but Collins versus Posey here still looks silly
11:32 |
Comment From JimboPanik has made nice contact with a short stroke all post season. But evaluators do not like him much.
11:32 |
Comment From mtswWhich position player do you pick to relieve Collins?

Jeff Zimmerman: HR showing off his doodles
11:47 |
Comment From mtswHow many SF runs were attributable to swings so flat they could be illustrated with horizontal lines drawn on screen?
11:47 |
Neil Weinberg: Gotta be at least half.
11:48 |
Comment From Im( 🙂 ) = :Why should I keep watching?
11:49 |

11:49 |
Jeff Zimmerman: For the .01% chance of a comeback

11:51 |
Neil Weinberg: Still gotta tire out the Giants reliever
11:53 |
Neil Weinberg: For the people who haven’t bailed on the game? What’s on your mind?
11:53 |
Neil Weinberg: How much can you say about a middle reliever wearing one?
11:54 |
Comment From RobertSince Giants have broke open the game, I’ve been watching old barry bonds highlights. He may be a despicable person but he was really fun to watch.
11:55 |
Comment From Timsad the baseball season is going to be over soon, it always goes so fast
11:55 |
Comment From GuestHow many people still in the chat?
11:55 |
Jeff Zimmerman: 4 outs to go
11:55 |
Neil Weinberg: Few hundred?
11:55 |
Comment From GregI’m rooting for the royals, so the rationalization is that they have to lose one so they can win it all at home
11:55 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Sort of works
11:55 |
Comment From mtswWhich widely reviled but indisputably outstanding, player is more likely to be looked back on as misunderstood good guy rather than villain: Bonds or A-Rod?
11:56 |
Neil Weinberg: Bonds, I think.
11:56 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Bonds easily
11:56 |
Comment From Eric GBrandon Crawford struck out swinging. LI: 0.00

11:56 |
Neil Weinberg: THERE IS NO LEVERAGE.
11:57 |
Comment From Timso this loss was good because the big three get to rest?!
11:58 |
Jeff Zimmerman: I would have rather seen them throw
11:58 |
Comment From mtswBetter cushy job: one of those random actors who turns up in every other commercial or bullpen catcher?
11:58 |
Neil Weinberg: I want to be a bullpen catcher so bad.
11:59 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Same here, but I would have to sit on a bucket, my knees are gone
12:01 |
Comment From David S.Is Strickland the best low-leverage reliever of all time?
12:01 |
Neil Weinberg: That would actually be a fun thing to explore.
12:02 |
Comment From RukiSomeone get on the low leverage reliever article then.
12:02 |
Neil Weinberg: And so began the Royals comeback…
12:03 |
Comment From GuestIs Jeff still watching?
12:03 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Sadly, yes
12:04 |
Comment From AdamIs Yost planning Herrera 2,Davis 2, Holland 1 if he is semi rational?
12:05 |
Neil Weinberg: Probably *planning* on Shields 6, then three from those guys.
12:05 |
Jeff Zimmerman: Sounds about right
12:06 |
Comment From ZackIf Shields is in trouble early, he should have a short leash on him. He should arguable be thinking 2 innings from all 3 of those guys
12:06 |
Neil Weinberg: Yeah. With the off day especially.
12:07 |
Comment From GuestRegarding bullpen catcher, to try to handle 95+ degree heat over and over night after night does not sound like fun.
12:07 |
Jeff Zimmerman: What else am I going to do, sit around and complain about HR?
12:08 |
Comment From KK-SwizzleFun fact: Kelvin Herrea has more WS at-bats in SF then Billy Butler
12:08 |
Neil Weinberg: Alright, only took four hours! Not too bad.
12:09 |
Neil Weinberg: Hope this was a reasonably enjoyable chat.
12:09 |
Neil Weinberg: (hopes someone leaves hilarious comment so this can end on a high note)
12:10 |
Neil Weinberg: Alright, take care all. I think Mike P tomorrow and then Dave/Jeff for Game 6.
Dave is the Managing Editor of FanGraphs.
My favorite idiot talking head comments from after the game were the two separate times I heard people praise SF’s players for “not trying to catch up all in one inning”.
A) I am SURE that each and every inning they were down, they were, “trying to catch up all in that inning”.
B) They did in actual fact catch up all in one inning…
No no: they WEREN’T ‘ttcuaiti’, that’s the POINT.
It’s all very zen. Yes, KC has it’s Aoki, but Buddha preached one should strive toward equanimity with personal grace and poise, never straining against Destiny. Is that not so VERY Ishikawa? And Nori the Living Buddha’s manifestation of the futility of striving against Fate?
I read that as “never straining against Denny’s” and my first thought was “Billy Butler must not be a very good buddhist.”
