Tony Gwynn Was Always in Control

It’s rare that a player becomes synonymous with his team. Tony Gwynn was one such player. He is literally known as Mr. Padre. The address of Petco Park is 19 Tony Gwynn Drive. When John Moores owned the team, he even paid for a new stadium at Gwynn’s alma mater, and it was named Tony Gwynn Stadium. Today however, we lose the opportunity to speak of Gwynn in the present tense, as he has unfortunately passed away at the age of 54.

The records that Gwynn holds in Padres history are essentially all of them. He holds the top nine single-season batting averages in team history. Cumulatively, his .338 career average is 24 points higher than the next man on that list, Mark Loretta. That is made all the more remarkable when you consider how long Gwynn wore the San Diego uniform — he played nearly twice as many games as the next player on the list, Garry Templeton. And he did rack up more than double the at-bats and plate appearances than did Templeton. Gwynn retired with an even 65.0 WAR. No other Padres player has even 30. Among active players, Chase Headley is the leader, but at 19.6 WAR and very close to free agency, he’s not going to sniff Gwynn any time soon. In fact, it’s probably not hyperbole to say that the player most equipped to surpass Gwynn isn’t on the Padres right now.

FanGraphs After Dark Chat – 6/10/14

6:11
Paul Swydan: Hi everybody!

Jeff is off tonight, but I’ll be here at 9 pm ET. To quote the venerable Earl Simmons, get at me dog (aka, load me up with questions).

See you soon!

9:02
Paul Swydan: Hey, let’s do this!

9:02
Comment From Jon
N. Ramirez, B. Ziegler, J. Familia, A. Ramos– Which is likeliest to get to 10+ saves ROS?

9:02
Paul Swydan: I’m not the expert on this that the bullpen report guys are, but it seems like Ramirez and Ziegler are the most likely, with Ramos being the least likely unless Cishek is traded for some reason.

9:02
Comment From Los
Polanco is 0-1, should I cut him?

9:02
Paul Swydan: Yup!

What’s Eating the Tigers?

A few weeks ago, it all looked so simple. The Tigers were steamrolling foes, and the rest of the division members languished. Detroit held a seven-game lead in the American League Central, and in fact had the best record in baseball. Fast forward three weeks and they have been the worst team in the AL since, with only the Colorado Rockies performing worse in the National League. It’s been an unexpected turn of events for sure, and it has flattened the AL Central standings. The Tigers still stand as the overwhelming favorite to win the division, but there is definitely more doubt now than there was in mid-May.

FanGraphs After Dark Chat – 6/4/14

5:33
Paul Swydan: Hi everybody. Different night this week, sorry if that’s a bother for you. But same time, 9 pm ET! Jeff and I will both be here to cram some baseball into your baseball holes. So crack open a Sam Summer, or whatever snooty beer you kids are drinking these days, and hit us with a question or six. See you soon!

9:01
Paul Swydan: OK, let’s do this! Sorry for the one minute delay, I was just reading an upcoming Hardball Times post. You guys and gals are all reading THT every day, right? Right, I knew you were.

9:01
Comment From Alex
IT’S 9 PM!

9:02
Paul Swydan: Yes yes, sorry Alex.

9:02
Comment From Big Joe Mufferaw
This MUST be Shared! Yesterday “Hawk” Harelson said this “No Shortstop in the league, including Troy Tulowitzky, has had a better season than Alexei, both on offense and defense”. Has he lost all credibility of what comes out of his mouth?

9:02
Paul Swydan: 95%. He has to say something intelligent every now and then or even his bosses would tire of him. But he’s incredibly biased, we already knew that.

“I Wish We Could Get Guys Like That”

Weird things about baseball fascinate me. One of those things is the concept of discarded players. Every once in awhile, you’ll see a player doing well and think to yourself, “Hey, wasn’t he on our team at one point?” David Carpenter is one such player. Watching him face the Red Sox this week, I couldn’t help but think that it would be sure nice if the Sox had him right now instead of Craig Breslow. Sure, the world will keep on spinning, and Carpenter wouldn’t make or break the 2014 Red Sox, but every little bit counts, and the Red Sox gave him away for free after just five weeks on the roster. In situations like these, we often jokingly say (or at least I do), “Hey, I wish we could get guys like that!”

I don’t mean to pick on the Red Sox, because every team does this. If you scan rosters, you’ll find one such player on just about every roster. And originally, my intention was to run down that list and look at them all individually. But then I got a look at this trade. On July 31, 2010, the Atlanta Braves traded Gregor Blanco, Jesse Chavez and Tim Collins to the Kansas City Royals for Rick Ankiel and Kyle Farnsworth. Take a look:

FanGraphs After Dark Chat – 5/27/14

7:06
Paul Swydan: Hi everybody! My apologies for not setting up the chat earlier. I usually sit down and do it at 5:30, but tonight at 5:30 I was at the park for a picnic for my son’s school. Whoops!

In any case, fill up the queue and I’ll get some polls working and together we can do this. Just make sure you caress the ball the way you would your wife or girlfriend or husband or boyfriend. Baseball!

9:02
Paul Swydan: OK, let’s do this.

9:02
Comment From Matt
What are you doing with Hanley Ramirez? In the lineup but are you selling now?

9:02
Paul Swydan: I’m holding. Unless you find someone really desperate for a shortstop.

9:03
Comment From Jose
Jacob Turner: ERA 5.35, FIP 4.27, xFIP 3.73, BABIP .351. Even better numbers if you remove his one start before going on the DL. Is he turning a corner?

9:04
Paul Swydan: Color me intrigued, but it’s hard to fall in love with a guy who has such a low strikeout rate. May be one of those guys whose peripherals always look better than what he really is.
