SCOUT Leaderboards for the Northwoods League
Introduction
In yesterday’s edition of the Notes, the author published a pair of leaderboards for, and produced some superfiecial notes regarding, the Cape Cod League — i.e. the nation’s most prestigious collegiate wood-bat summer league. The present edition of the Notes represents a very similar exercise — except, in this case, for what is generally regarded as the second-most prestigious/competitive wood-bat summer league, the Northwoods League.

Based in the Upper Midwest, the Northwoods League often features the next summer’s Cape League participants. By way of illustration, one finds that two of the top hitters in the Cape League by the author’s likely flawed methodology — Wichita State’s Casey Gillaspie and Virginia’s Derek Fisher — played last season in the Northwoods League. Other graduates of the League include: Brandon Crawford (2005), Curtis Granderson (2001), Chris Sale (2008), Max Scherzer (2004), and Jordan Zimmermann (2006).

Below are the SCOUT leaderboards for the Northwoods League’s top hitters and pitchers a little more than a month into this summer’s edition of the league. (All data courtesy Pointstreak.)

SCOUT Leaderboards for the Cape Cod League
Introduction
The Cape Cod League is a collegiate wood-bat summer league that, against all odds, is located in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA. Annually, it serves as home to many of the country’s top college prospects. By way of example: approximately one-third of all players taken in the first 10 rounds of the most recent draft were products of the Cape League. By way of another example: approximately 70% of the players who’ve been named MVP of the Cape League have recorded major-league service time of some type or another.

Below are the SCOUT leaderboards for the Cape’s top hitters and pitchers a little more than a month into this summer’s edition of the league. (All data courtesy Pointstreak.)

SCOUT Leaderboards for the Atlantic League
Introduction
For four consecutive years between 2003 and -06, Atlanta third-base prospect Andy Marte appeared on Baseball America’s top-100 prospect list — three of those times, within the top-15 overall. He hit 21 home runs in the Class-A Sally League as just an 18-year-old. A few years later, at age 21, he recorded 20 more home runs and a very promising 64:83 walk-to-strikeout ratio in 460 Triple-A plate appearances.

Odds for the Derby, Translated to Win Percentage
Introduction
With the conclusion of Sunday night’s Cubs-Cardinals game, capital-B Baseball has officially entered its All-Star Break. For those (like the present author) whose affection for the sport is tied directly to its ubiquity during the summer months, the Break is not a particularly welcome interval. For those (also like the present author) whose job it is to produce Notes on a Daily basis, the Break creates what is known as “a dearth of content.”

In any case, to divert ourselves today, Day 1 of 4, the author has produced the following — i.e. the projected winning percentages of every participant in tonight’s home-run derby based on the latest betting odds regarding same.

Regarding Corey Kluber’s Changeup
A Largely Uninteresting, But Still Factual, Point Regarding the Author
The reader will likely not be fascinated to learn, but the author is compelled to announce anyway, that he (i.e. that same author) was forced to compose the greater portion of these Notes at 2:00am CT at a Comfort Inn in Prospect Heights, Illinois — this, after his travel plans from New York City to Madison, Wisconsin, were altered for the less convenient.

While one’s own travel woes are Pressing and Important, it’s also true that another’s (i.e. another’s travel woes) are both Tedious and Wearisome. That being the case, the author will not elaborate on his own any further. He mentions it here primarily as justification for why this edition of the Notes is mostly just regarding Corey Kluber’s changeup.

Top Performances of the Mexican League So Far
A Brief Introduction
Featured in this edition of the Notes are the SCOUT leaderboards for the Mexican League. Briefly stated, SCOUT represents an attempt to use our knowledge of certain metrics, and at what sample sizes they become reliable, to measure run production/prevention in instances where small samples are all that’s available. Stated less briefly, is the explanation available here.

Other recent editions: Triple-A / Double-A / High-A / Class A / Low-A.
