Description:
The Oakland Athletics are currently seeking a seasonal Cape Cod Intern for the Amateur Scouting department. This position will be responsible for the Oakland Athletics’ scouting coverage of the Cape Cod Baseball League during the summer of 2024.

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate amateur baseball players and create scouting reports on their current skills and projection of potential future skills.
  • Produce, curate, and analyze video and other relevant data for targeted baseball prospects. 
  • Establish relationships with coaches within the Cape Cod Baseball League to acquire pertinent information regarding player health and scheduling.
  • Effectively communicate player updates to internal stakeholders. 
  • Develop and maintain a detailed schedule to ensure appropriate coverage of players and teams across the Cape Cod Baseball League.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • High degree of baseball acumen and understanding of evaluating baseball skills. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills, time management, and attention to detail.
  • Experience working with video equipment. 
  • Flexibility to work extensive hours including nights, weekends, and holidays, as necessary to follow the Cape Cod Baseball League games.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Developer, Baseball Systems position will be a member of the baseball operations software development team, and is responsible for the design, development, and support, of all baseball systems. This individual will work closely with members of baseball operations to understand business requirements that drive the analysis, design, and development of quality baseball systems and solutions. This position is focused heavily on front-end development, and will collaborate closely with colleagues on the software development team and baseball operations personnel from all departments.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create leading-edge baseball solutions together with the software development team and others on new and existing baseball systems
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of the software architecture and embrace a software engineering mindset
  • Participate in key phases of the software development process of critical baseball applications, including requirements gathering, analysis, effort estimation, technical investigation, software design and implementation, testing, bug fixing, and quality assurance
  • Responsible for the design and development of complex web-based user interfaces, web services, back-end logic, and other aspects of web applications

CHARACTERISTICS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field
  • 0-2 years of front-end development experience building web applications with frameworks such as Angular or React, and experience developing with Typescript, CSS, HTML, C#, ServiceStack, T-SQL, or similar technologies, is required.
  • Experience with relational database design and development in SQL Server, Snowflake, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or similar technologies, is required.
  • Experience building front-end visualizations using D3, chart.js, or similar, is a plus
  • Experience developing with cloud technologies from Azure, GCP, or AWS are a plus
  • Experience integrating systems and data using third-party APIs and services are a plus
  • Ability to work autonomously and as a team in a fast paced environment

POSITION OVERVIEW:
As the Minor League Assistant, Baseball Systems you will represent the Baseball Systems Front Office in Ft. Myers, responsible for minor league video, including collection, organization, distribution, and management. You will improve and advance the video process, including potential involvement of new software and hardware. In addition, you’ll be a key resource for Player Development staff in day-to-day needs related to the effective use of technology and video assets. This individual is expected to become proficient in the operation of all baseball technology across the minor league system. This includes Blast, Trackman, Portable Trackman, Camera Systems, KinaTrax, Hawk-Eye, and streaming video assets. Work with your supervisor to oversee the training of affiliate associates. Lastly, the Assistant will contribute in a supporting role to data engineering efforts that work toward complete and accurate data collection, developing new skills in support of these efforts.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate and oversee all Minor League video collection and distribution. Monitor video collection and ensure that it is up-to-date.
  • Manage minor league BATS system, keeping the central database up to date.
  • Manage affiliate video and computer equipment.
  • Ensure video is easily accessible locally at the affiliates for coaches and over the internet for remote staff.
  • Oversee creation of player video comparisons for priority players at least once per season (and as needed) with affiliate interns and Player Development coordinators.
  • Proactively provide specialty video (both solicited and unsolicited) to coordinating staff, and ensure proactive video production by affiliate interns.
  • Manage custom video sharing using BATS with other organizations to build-out our library of available video.

  • Travel to each affiliate and the academy in the DR at the beginning of the season to ensure all technology and video assets are operating smoothly.

  • Work collaboratively with sports science personnel with new and existing technology.
  • Become proficient in the operation and maintenance of baseball technology devices and manage the devices across the minor league system.
  • Assist in implementing the technology used throughout the minor leagues, including Blast sensors, Trackman, Portable Trackman, Edgertronic High Speed Cameras, KinaTrax motion capture, Hawk-Eye, HitTrax, Trajekt Arc pitching machines, and other technologies.
  • Manage the operation of KinaTrax motion-capture systems in the JBP cage and JBP stadium, as well as train interns on the operation of KinaTrax in JBP and at applicable affiliates.
  • Manage the operation of the Hawk-Eye ball tracking and motion-capture system across all affiliates.
  • Working with our Technology Specialist, respond to and resolve technical problems and issues in a timely manner across all minor league affiliates and in the DR.
  • Maintain the streaming assets at all minor league affiliates and in the DR and insure games and supporting data are available to other baseball systems.
  • Manage and contribute to the discovery of existing and emerging baseball technologies.
  • Gain familiarity with data engineering processes and tools and contribute in a supporting role on a daily basis by performing the following:
  • Using development tools to review the quality of Trackman and Hawk-Eye pitch data
  • Becoming experienced with SQL to update database tables and make data corrections
  • Learning Python to develop new processes in support of data engineering efforts

CHARACTERISTICS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent computer and device troubleshooting skills and ability to use Remote Desktop and other remote access technologies.
  • Experience setting up and configuring equipment such as servers, computers, cameras, and other devices, is a plus.
  • Experience with SQL, Python, R, or other languages is a plus.
  • Up to 2 years of experience in baseball or another sport.

The Baseball Research & Development group is responsible for deriving insights from our baseball datasets, building proprietary metrics, and building a web application used throughout our baseball organization.

The software engineering intern will join our team of data engineers and web developers and will help build data imports, data pipelines, and add features to an internal web application used by the baseball operations front office, scouts, player development, and coaching staff. Sport Science Assistant – Dominican Republic

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:
The Sport Science Team at the Boston Red Sox endeavors to advance understanding and enhance performance through the implementation of evidence-based practice and innovation. This is achieved through an interdisciplinary approach, with a particular emphasis on key pillars of collaboration, research, education, and application.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Dominican Republic Sport Science Assistant serves as a member of the Sport Performance Team within Red Sox Player Development. This position is designed to advance the understanding and identification of key performance factors and the development of systems that enhance athlete health and performance. Based in our Academy near Santo Domingo, DR, this position serves as ‘on the ground’ support to the Academy athletes and coaches, as well as the Dominican-based International Scouting Department. Responsibilities and time will be split evenly between International PD and Scouting.

As the Red Sox continue to build a team capable of being the standard in player and staff development, we are looking for candidates who are organized with uncompromising attention to detail, inquisitive, intellectually curious, data-driven, and open minded. RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Athlete Management System Administration
  • Assume a leading role in the administration of the Boston Red Sox Athlete Management System (AMS) and the integration of performance technology, including data collection and data entry, data cleaning and processing, and generating reports for various groups (e.g., players, sport performance team members, front office staff, scouting).
  • Athlete Testing & Tracking
  • Coordinate and lead physical testing protocols while seeking more efficient, valid, and reliable methodologies.
  • Collaborate with International Scouting to lead physical testing and data collection initiatives at amateur workouts.
  • Data Management & Analytics
  • Assist in organization-wide data aggregation, manipulation, and report generation.
  • Delivery & Application of Performance Insights
  • Build relationships with and support other departments within Sport Performance, International Scouting, Field Staff, and players to understand needs and deliver insights.

  • Develop documentation and educational materials to communicate Sport Science findings and best practices.

CHARACTERISTICS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Undergraduate degree in sports science, exercise science, data science/analytics or a related field required; Master’s Degree preferred.  
  • Experience working with a multi-disciplinary performance team in an elite/ professional sport environment is preferred.
  • Experience working with Athlete Management Systems.

Associate Pro Scout

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:
The Pro Scouting Department is responsible for evaluation, information and intelligence gathering, and decision-making input for players across all professional leagues, including: Major & Minor Leagues, Independent Leagues, and Professional Winter Leagues. The cornerstone of the department is the scouting and evaluation of players through both in-person and remote coverage. We collaborate consistently with the Baseball Analytics, Player Development, International Pro, and Personnel/Strategy groups to leverage organizational knowledge and help drive decisions on player acquisitions.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Associate Pro Scout position centers around at least one season of development and education in all aspects of professional scouting with the Boston Red Sox. The position will focus on three primary areas: player evaluation, integration & analysis of data/proprietary information through research projects/tasks, and video & data collection. The Associate Pro Scout will receive extensive training in Boston Red Sox scouting standards by attending regular education/feedback sessions, working closely with experienced staff, and getting exposure to all levels of professional baseball. They will collaborate with the Front Office to complete targeted research and maintain ongoing projects with a focus on player evaluation and acquisition. Additionally, they will assist in the capture of video and other data on a regular basis. Travel is required for this position with possible relocation to Arizona or Florida.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop player evaluation and report writing skills, following club procedures and guidelines.
  • Attend and participate in regular feedback sessions with scouting leadership.
  • Complete research and ongoing projects as assigned.
  • Collect targeted video and other data as required.
  • Travel to venues both domestic & international.

  • Experience in a baseball operation or experience conducting past baseball research is preferred.

Position Summary:
As part of the Baseball Systems department, this role will work closely with the Data Engineering and Software Engineering groups within Baseball Systems to enhance existing tools and processes and build new ones.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Investigate user identified data quality concerns relating to areas such as game statistics, scouting reports, and transactions. Diagnose and fix the issue(s).
  • Load new datasets from vendors into internal databases and make the data available to users.

Qualifications:
