RotoGraphs Job Openings

FanGraphs currently has two part-time fantasy blogging positions open for the RotoGraphs fantasy blog. These are both paid blogging positions.

Ask yourself the following questions before you apply:
– Are you able to write clear and concise fantasy oriented analysis using the stats available on FanGraphs?
– Are you available and able to make a real commitment to write 5-15 short posts a week?
– Can you come up with your own topic ideas and are you able to edit your own posts?

Please send all applications to david@fangraphs.com. Please include anything you think would be helpful including writing samples, links to previous work, a resume, etc…

The Quick Glossary

In an attempt to make the site a little easier to use for newcomers or really just anyone, I’ve implemented a quick glossary in the player pages.

Just click on the quick glossary button in any section on the player pages and you’ll get a quick overview of all the stats in that section. This will probably make its way into the leaderboards too.

Someday we’ll get around to updating the actual glossary….

PitchFx

We’ve put up some PitchFx data on the site under a special PitchFx section for each pitcher. This is FanGraphs first real foray into PitchFx, so we’ll definitely be taking suggestions on this section and we’ll do our best to implement the ones we think make sense. We’d really like to make our PitchFx section as useful as possible.

A couple things to make note of:

-The averages are based on handedness. This was necessary for the horizontal and vertical movement averages.
-“FA” or fastball includes both the FF pitch type classification and the FA classification to keep things relatively steady from year to year.
-“FT” or 2 seam fastball includes both the SI and FT classifications for the same reasons.

2009 Minor League Stats

We’ve got the 2009 minor league stats available right this second in the leaderboards and player pages. I also made a few minor changes to the leaderboards that make the standard/advanced sections contain the same stats as the major league ones. Nice to keep things consistent and all.

These will continue to be updated daily.

Now that all the early season fires have been put out, I can start working on new additions!

2009 UZR: Updated

The 2009 UZR fielding data through last night’s games is now available. Remember that it’s a really small sample size. UZR should be updated at least every Sunday.

I believe everything is now running pretty smoothly on the site after what was an extremely chaotic first week behind the scenes. Last thing that needs to get done is minor league data and I’m hoping to kick that off starting tomorrow.

Twitter Feeds Working

All the twitter feeds are now up and running. Hopefully we won’t experience any further issues! Do remember these are still all in beta. For those of you who are hearing about this for the first time, we have twitter feeds available for each and every team that transmit the game state, last play, and win probability.

There’s the full feed (every play) and the quick feed (end of inning, score change, and important plays). Here are the twitter links:

Live Data Working!

After the outage yesterday, live data will be up and running again today. We are working on the twitter feeds and expect to have those working again sometime today or tomorrow. Thanks for your patience!

Twitter Update

Well, we’re having some issues with the twitter feeds, so I suspect we will not have any live twitter updates until tomorrow, maybe end of the week at the latest. Sorry for the inconvenience and we hope to have everything up and running as soon as we can.

All live data on the site should be working well again.

Plate Discipline with Averages

Added a quick little feature that people seem to have wanted for a while now. You can now click on the “show average” button:

picture-1

If you click on the button it brings up the averages for each year:

You can then click on the show averages button again to hide the average data.

I realize it’s a little tricky to read and there are definitely better ways I can think of doing it, but I feel this is a nice stopgap until I can do things how I would have preferred. This will probably make its way into some of the other tables too, like the advanced data section.

2009 Up And Running

After a bit of a delay, looks like everything is up and running with 2009 stats (all of one game). UZR is the only thing not yet updated and I’m hoping to start updating that either later this week, or during the weekend.

We had issues with live data last night, but we believe them to be resolved and plan to start having all the live games starting today. There might be a few issues to work through in the first week, but hopefully everything will 100% working by week 2 at the very latest. Thanks for your patience.

Oh, and as a peace offering we’ve snuck in 2002-2004 pitch type & velocity data.
