I’m pleased to announce that FanGraphs has arrived on the iPhone & iPod Touch!
This initial version of the FanGraphs Baseball iPhone App includes:
– Live win probability and win probability graphs.
– Live box score and play-by-play data.
– Basic/Advanced/Value stats for any baseball player.
– Minor league stats.
– Historical game data going back to 1974.

The app looks great, but $2.99? Did you have to charge for something that everyone with an iPhone can already get by going to the real website?
Does the app do anything that you can’t easily get on the website? Like can yu get all the players stats in easy format because that might be a reason to buy the app.

I started working MLB games professionally in 1997 and have always sought out new ways to look at players and performance. While MLB.com is a great resource and the MLB Baseball Information System spits out good data, even Elias Sports Bureau doesn’t offer this kind of in-depth information with such great turn-around.
After reading the titles THE BOOK and WIN SHARES, this web site was brought to my attention and I spent the first six months observing and learning the information on this web site. Now it is almost a regular daily reference before, during and after each game date.
This season, I bought into MLB At Bat 2009. What a lot here have not talked about was the fact that the application is meant for those who want to watch or listen to MLB games. The Game Day application for the iPhone was a simple FILL-IN to justify the price they are asking for the app.
For me, I use the MLB At Bat 2009 app for monitoring out of town games and also listening to other games. Like the ESPN Radio and CNN apps, the primary benefit is the idea that I can monitor so much with a single app.
Now to the root of this message … I have yet to buy into the Fan GRAPHS app, however, I will get it for 2010.
The cost of $2,99 for an app is very reasonable. The most I have ever paid for an iPhone app is $10.00 and that was for, both, Tiger Woods Golf and the MLB At Bat 2009 apps. I am very happy with both.
For those of you who don’t want to pay, then keep coming to the web site and enjoy.
For those who want to simply complain and ask for free stuff, there are a lot of free applications out there. Unfortunately, the quality you get isn’t as close to the quality you get by dishing out three dollars for hard work that people have put together.
If you like Fan GRAPHS as much as I do, put three dollars in your budget and enjoy!
The website is ad supported, so at least we can recoup some of the costs of running the site.
Ads for the iphone are a little different and we wanted to maximize screen space and not have to serve an advertisement, so “free” wasn’t really an option.
Honestly, I think $2.99 is an extremely competitive price compared to the other baseball apps out there for the iPhone and none of them really offer what this one does, with the exception of maybe the MLB app ($9.99) when it comes to live data, though they don’t have any win probability if that’s something you care about. Personally, I think when it comes to historical data and just player data in general the FanGraphs is easily the best one out there right now.
I’ve been using FanGraphs through the web browser on the iPhone since the iPhone was released and the site is just not really meant to be used in a iPhone. Even on a 3G connection it’s pretty slow and you have to do a lot of pinching and scrolling to get the data you want.
Yeah, except with the Gameday App I can listen to games and watch live games. It looks kinda cool, but right now if I’m paying for an app it better offer something I can’t get elsewhere. Yeah, it’d be nice to have my stats handy, but if you want to charge for an app it better compare to the Gameday App.
Omar, the MLB app does not offer the same level of player detail as the FanGraphs app, nor does it offer any of the live win probability.
There’s also a serious difference in price. The FanGraphs app has a current introductory price of $2.99. The MLB app is $9.99 and stops working completely after a year (FanGraphs app will always work, and live win probability data is guaranteed through the 2010 season). If we were charging the same amount as MLB you might have a case.
So, if you think it’d be nice to have your stats handy for the price of a cup of coffee and live win probability data through the 2010 season then buy it, otherwise don’t. You can always access FanGraphs through your iPhone browser if you’re unwilling to spend the $2.99.
Consider this a premium FanGraphs product, it was not particularly cheap to develop, the stat costs are expensive, and there’s not really any other way to recoup the costs. We’re not a 501 status company.

The price is beyond fair. And while I’m not sure how much I will personally use it, I see it as away to throw a little money towards a website that has giving me exponentially more value than 3 dollars.
For $3, I’ll consider it a donation to keep this place going. Yes, it can be obtained through safari, but convenience isn’t something that can’t be paid for. To your inquiry, the stats are in a pretty easy format to parse through. Also, I believe they worked with a developer to create the app, so at the least it’d be nice for them to recoup some of that.
Quick feedback: I’m not sure about everyone, but on Pedro’s advanced stats page, it looks like FIP calculation is off — as sick as his 1999 was, I’m not sure his FIP was 0.21, as it says there.
The FIP column should be fixed now. Wonder how I missed that initially…

Well… the iPhone app is set up in such a way where it is easy to port to other mobile devices, but we’ll have to see how popular the iPhone app is before committing to what I believe is smaller market at least in terms of application sales.
If the iPhone app does well, there’s a decent chance it will end up on other devices, but nothing is currently in the works.

Can I buy one even if I don’t have an iPhone just to encourage you to build one for Blackberry? Holy crap this thing looks awesome.
In terms of a smaller market, blackberrys are by a decent margin the better selling smartphone. They just arent as toy-like as iPhones… so perhaps they dont encourage app sales as much.
Is it a flash based app…? You could have trouble with most BBs if it is.

A couple comments…
The design is slick and terrific but can you make it so it’s not automatically in landscape mode? Also, I second putting the blog on the app… I kinds assumed this would be the case.
Thirdly, John Smoltz’s SLN stats are not showing up, can this be fixed?
About landscape only – I initially wanted the app to work in both directions, but to get all those stats in there, it really is only feasible in landscape mode. When the first beta hit I found it slightly awkward the app was only landscape too, but I got used to it very quickly.
The blog – this shouldn’t be a problem to add (and in portrait mode). I had figured reading the blog on the iphone was less of a problem than searching for stats and there were other ways (rss readers) to get that content, but I agree it would be good to have the entire FanGraphs all in one app.
Smoltz’s SLN stats – We’re currently suppressing partial seasons because I just thought it was overkill. A “show partial seasons” button is going to be one of the first updates. If there are enough requests, I can add partial seasons without submitting an app update.

I would like to see partial seasons, as well as batted ball data.
What would be cool is if the tab bar had a slider on it, and you could slide to the right and it’d show the batted ball, pitch value, etc etc, and same for batters.
Standard-Advanced-Batted Ball and then you could either slide it so that it moves as far as you slide it, or slide it so that it brings up the next 3 stat categories.
I just got the app for my iPod Touch, and I’m loving it. I’m curious what the plans are for getting the blog included. I’d also like to see league leaders and team-by-team breakdowns. Too much to ask?

I will be purchasing the app regardless because I am in love with this site, but I second (or third) the request to please please please add blog content to the app. I come to this site for two reasons. First, for the amazing and bountiful stats you provide. But secondly, I come for the great articles (I feel like I’m lamenting over a Playboy magazine subscription, sheesh).

I’ve been waiting for something like this for a while, but a few questions:
1) The app description says there is UZR in the app, but I don’t see it. Is this something that will be present in a future version of the app?
2) Are there plans to bring other categories of stats to the app, such as batted ball data?
3) Have you thought about linking player names in the box scores to their profile pages?
1. The Fld stat under the value section is total UZR for a particular player. There are no position breakdowns, but UZR is definitely in there (even if it’s not labeled as UZR)
2. Yes!
3. This was on the slate for version 1, but it was overlooked and coded last minute. I didn’t want to rush our testing of that feature, so we decided to leave it out. It will definitely be in the very next update of the app.
Just downloaded the app. It looks great so far. I agree with a couple people earlier who said it would be nice to be able to read the blog. I always look forward to the articles on this site and the consistently quality work…great app though

I’d gladly pay for it if it eventually made it onto the Palm Pre. The app store is still in beta until this week or next, so obviously that’s a ways away, but just figured I’d throw my begging in with the rest!

I bought it and think the interface is great. I am happy to support this site and the people behind it in any way I can. That being said I have a couple of requests as well:
1) Blog content please. Love the articles and it is a pain to load in Safari to get that content.
2) Is there any way to make it so that you can highlight a player’s name in the box score and go directly to his stats? Like a hyperlink of sorts.
3) Fielding data is very limited on the “Value” tab. Could we get full defensive stats on its own tab?
4) Can we get a leaders tab as well?
I know I am asking alot here. I just love the information found on this site and I use my iPhone all the time and the app interface is so much better than the browser. I know I am being greedy but I want all the Fangraph’s goodness at my fingertips.

I’ll second all the requests for “all the FanGraphs” goodness. It’s already like Christmas in September (and $3 was more than worth it from a price standpoint), but I’ll go ahead and second some of those additional requests.
1) Hyperlinks to team stats from the scores page and player stats from the box scores would be great additions.
2) Other stat categories, leaders, and team stats would of course be nice to have.
For players, perhaps a set of selection boxes at the top would work?
One for Graphs/Season Stats/Game Log/Play Log
One for Batting/Pitching/Fielding
One for Standard/Adv/Batted Ball/WPA/Pitch Type/Discipline/Fielding/Value
One for showing/hiding Partial Seasons/Postseason/Projections/Minors
I know screen real estate is a big concern, and I’m not a developer/programmer or anything, so I can’t really offer a detailed suggestion, but being able to quickly navigate to a particular piece of data is one of the great things about coming here.
I love the way you did the play-by-play by inning; it’s a nice touch for the small screen. I can’t wait to see the live graphs in action. Like another commenter said, no more trying to navigate FanGraphs in Safari when I’m at a game.

$3 is a bargain and well worth it to help support the site. It would be great for debates about which player is better if there were a way to temporarily save 2 players to flip between to more easily compare stats, but I like the interface a lot overall.
Absolutely fantastic, also +1 on the being able to view the blog in a future update.
I already downloaded it and am excited to have it on my phone. 2.99 is extremely fair especially considering the many updates (I hope) will be forthcoming. One thing I would like to see are easy-to-access splits. It would be great if, like baseballreference.com, we could see babip over the past 7/14/60/etc days.
And it would be great if the home screen with all the scores had the names of the pitchers currently in the game or who are scheduled to pitch…if you want to get real crazy, how about current weather information…
As another poster already said, it would be nice to be able to access articles and search for archived ones.
I have faith that the app will be improved as I have no reason to think a team like FanGraphs wouldn’t make every effort to make the app the go-to one for all baseball fans.
Splits probably won’t be on the iphone until they actually hit the site, but when we do a leaderboard for the iPhone there will be the usual 7/14/30 options.
I would personally like to have leaderboards in the next version of the app since I spend a lot of my own time on those.

Just bought this – fantastic work, guys. Well worth a measly $3 to have all of this at my fingertips.
If there is some phone app that you love more than Fangraphs, and you pay less than 2.99 for, then that’s a decent reason not to pay.
Otherwise, take a one-day hiatus from your Starbucks concoction, and think of the money that you put in as an incentive for David to keep spending more time and effort on his site.
Agreed. $3 is a f-ing bargain for this information. I would pay a small charge for the website as well. Furthermore, clearly this is a work in progress…it is only going to get better and you only have to pay once.
1) please simply stop complaining about $3… seriously, it’s very lame to complain about a one-time $3 cost if you are going to use the app.
2) would like to see RE24 on every stat screen (like in the “Box Score” page next to WPA; in the “Plays” page)
3) When you click on a player name in the “Box Score” or “Plays” page, it should bring you to that player’s page in the app
4) The player pages should have the WPA, RE24, Clutch, and associated stats… how many times have I been at a game and heard some idiot say ” is SO clutch!” and wouldn’t it be nice to have that stat handy so we can know.
5) The in-game win expectency graphs should have a dotted vertical line between the top and bottom of every inning, not just between whole-innings. Also that same graph should indicate every change in score along the top.
Wait, they already raised the price to $3?!?! What happened to $2.99? This is an outrage, Fangraphs.

I have had a poor experience at the ballpark trying to get up-to-date win probability using Safari to fangraphs.com.
So I bought it, and I’ve been impressed by the interface and the speed, and I’m using it right now to keep tabs on a game!

There may be more blackberrys, but there’s not an app exchange like iTunes. And there’s really not nearly enough demand for apps on blackberrys compares to the iPhone.
Not that I’m saying fangraphs should avoid blackberry development. I’m just saying it made a lot more sense to start with the iphone.

Love the app. Well worth the price. Don’t really mind the landscape mode, and really like that accumulated states in the box scores are highlighted.
Here’s what I think would improve the app.
1) Yes, the blog is needed. It’s fairly easy to read it on the Safari browser, but everything is smoother and quicker on the iPhone when it can be done through an app.
2) Sortable team stats would be great.
3) Sortable leader boards would also be great.
The last 6 months I’ve been silently thinking in my head that a FanGraph app would be amazing. To see come to fruition is awesome. Even if I paused at the $2.99 pricetag, I think that it’s well worth it to support all the free things we get from the website. I just want to see more data; Team stats, leaderboards, player pitch value numbers, UZR numbers, etc. I’m glad I bought it but I wished it looked a little more like FanGraphs in its scope.
We will be adding additional stats and features before next season and team pages and leaderboards are “must have” features for the next major release. The initial goal of the iPhone app was to give a “best of” of FanGraphs that we could fit into a very tiny screen and as we get a better feel for what works and what doesn’t we’ll be able to expand what’s available int he App.
So, to sum up, there’s more to come, but I’m not so sure you’ll ever see a full fledged version of FanGraphs in the iPhone App, just because of the screen space.
After just using the app for a few minutes the first thing that jumps out at me is the need for an automatic refresh interval. On ESPN and Yahoo box scores they have an option to set a 15 or 30 second automatic refresh. I would like the same for the fangraphs App.
This is something was debated for quite a while when it was being developed and the reason it was left out was mostly due to battery drain concerns. We may decide to move directly to a “push” architecture instead of checking for updates every 15/30 seconds, but we’re still figuring out what the best way to do this is and would very much like to have it be an option in the app.
How about an option that is something like “Auto Refresh – Off – 15s – 30s”. That way those who want it can turn it on and others can leave it off?
I do appreciate the battery life concern portion, which makes sense. For myself, I use an ipod touch mostly on public wi-fi that resets your login cookie after a few minutes of inactivity. So if I wait more than 5 minutes to hit “refresh” I have to open Safari and re-approve the terms of public wi-fi access, which is kind of a pain.
Anyway, other than this minor quibble, I am enjoying the app.
I am one who turns off all automatic updates whenever I can on iphone apps, so I agree with your decision. I don’t even have automated email checks!
Save those downloads for when I want them. But if you can make it an option for those who want it, I guess that makes sense too. Still, way down the priority list IMO.
Thank you for somehow getting it on the iTunes Japan App store. I was convinced I was getting my hopes up for nothing, but it is available. Thank you for all the hard work you’ve put into this site. There are so many of us who think of all the great things we want to create, but never get around to, while you’ve gone out and created the best baseball stats site on the net. The 350 yen is well worth it.
I am very tempted by this app, but it doesnt appear to offer anything different that I cannot get by going to the actualy website on my iphone via safari?
Looks like formatting is streamlined etc…. im tempted… what would you say to me to convince me to do it… besides supporting an awesome website?
There’s not going to be anything in the app that you can’t get via the website. The app is somewhat of a stripped down “best of” version of the site. But I was never happy using the site on the iPhone through safari. It’s slow and just not a very friendly experience.
If you’re perfectly happy using the site on your iPhone then don’t buy it.
Great stuff. Always amazed by win probabilities. Just doesn’t seem like an away team leading 2-0 in the bottom of the 3rd wins 70% of the time! But I’m SURE the data backs it up.
One thing to keep in mind is that 70% win probability doesn’t mean the other team won’t tie the game or take the lead. It just means at the end of the game, the current team will have won 70% of the time — there are many ways to get to that end result.
I wish apple would be more explicit about this in the human interface guidelines, but I think it’s unacceptable to force the user into landscape mode. A lot of new developers have flooded the app market over the several months and lazy decisions like this are, unfortunately, becoming more common.
Why not display a stripped down stat table in portrait mode and bring up the full version when landscape orientation is detected? There’s an accelerometer built into the gadget for a reason!
We do use the accelerometer to display the app rightside up so you don’t even have to think which way to turn your device a whole 90 degrees.
This was not a “lazy” decision as you describe. It was a decision based in practicality and to suggest that Apple should force developers to design two whole separate UI’s for every application is just a waste of everyone’s time. Many apps use only portrait, should they be expected to use Landscape too?
However, in later versions of the app we will re-explore using portrait mode. In the mockups we originally did, we just didn’t like what we came up with and the amount of space it allowed for stats, simple as that. We didn’t think it would work well, so we didn’t waste our time coding something we thought would end up being a poor user experience.
This is a joke. Seriously, how much of an inconvenience is it to just turn your phone sideways? And you have the gall to call the people who spent countless hours developing this app “Lazy”.
I agree that $2.99 for what you get is not a great value, but considering the amount of time I spend on this site (for free), I didn’t even look at the preview or ask what the app did, I immediately paid for it. I considered it a small token of my gratitude for how great this place is. I could easily see Fangraphs.com being a pay site, and its not, so we should give back in some fashion. Anyone with a site knows, web ads are not very lucrative right now.
I’ve been waiting for an app like this! Browsing baseball stats in mobile Safari is an exercise in frustration. This is a nice start and well worth $3 for no ads and to support its continued development.
I have a couple of UI thoughts. There’s going to be an awful lot of wasted space come the offseason with the current layout. Maybe have the app boot into a portrait home screen similar to this:

Whatever you decide to do, there should be a clear “home” button accessible on every page. I’d also like for any player name to link to his profile page. Email and Twitter integration would be nice touches, too – I always send out links to Baseball-Reference and FanGraphs pages.

ARGH! Now I need an iphone!
Love the app! Considering how much use I’ve gotten from the website for free, I consider it a donation to the site. Also, I’d much prefer to pay a few bucks and have an app optimized for the user experience than have to navigate my way around ads. Free often results in a race to the bottom where users who would be happy to pay for a good product aren’t given the choice to do so.
That said, maybe you could do a “lite” version with just the WPA stuff…

Wi-fi is not required, but you do need to have a connection.
I should add here that the app loads on a really weak connection. At Coors Field, ATT service just goes Kaput. You can’t load webpages to save your life, whether Edge or 3G. The FanGraphs App loaded up Matt Holliday’s BABIP no problem.

Is anyone else having trouble opening player’s information?
For example when I search for Mauer, it finds Joe Mauer but while it tries to load the stats page the application automatically closes.
We’re momentarily having a few server issues because our stats came in late today. It should now be resolved.
This is a bit of a personal question, but… which way do you guys hold your iPhone when you turn it landscape? With the Home button on the right or the button on the left?
I ask only because the natural start-up position for the FanGraphs App is the opposite of how I hold it. And now I’m curious if I’m in the minority for how I hold my phone, lol.

I have the home button on the right, but I think Apple generally seems to assume the opposite. When I take pictures and import them, they are always upside down. BTW, I’m lefty. When I saw that Apple was doing this with the photos, I was wondering if righties would put the home button on the left.

saved player searches please! Every one has a handful of players they look up frequently, it would be great to have then w/o entering their names over and over again. thx, great app, love that it’s quick and responsive.
I concur with several others, I would love to see this app come along for the Android based phones
they could charge double the cost, I don’t care, I pay ~80.00 for monthly charges to have a cell phone, whats a couple more for making that device immensely more useful/enjoyable to me

Standings would be nice. Though I realise even a full season is a relatively small sample size, it’s still kinda nice to see which teams are doing better than others.
But great app, ideal for checking scores when I wake up in the morning.

Not to be a parrot, but maybe it helps to keep showing interest – Android app, please! I normally don’t spend money on apps (other MLB At Bat), but I’d pay good money for this!!
I love this app and I think it is well worth the price. One thing I would like to see added somehow would be access to fangraphs podcast through the app. I know you can just get the podcast through the apple podcast app but it tends to be somewhat buggy.

Is there an Android version in the works? It’s been almost 5 years…
When clicked, the link to the app in iTunes brings up a message that says it’s not available in the US store anymore. Searching pulls up no results either.
the app should get updated so that you can easily click and view the latest fangraph/rotograph posts right on the phone. the access to stats is awesome, but the app would be so much more useful if you could read posts while away from a computer. pulling up the site on a normal browser is just too much of a hassle.

I bought the app when it first came out. It’s had a lot of glitches for the last year, so I went to delete it and then reinstall it, but it’s gone from the App Store. Wtf?
