Contract Crowdsourcing 2013-14: Omar Infante
Free agency begins five days after the end of the World Series. As in other recent offseasons, FanGraphs is once again facilitating this offseason a contract-crowdsourcing project, the idea being to harness the wisdom of the crowds to the end of better understanding the 2013-14 free-agent market.
Note that, this year, in addition to asking readers to estimate the years/dollars each free agent is likely to receive, FanGraphs is also requesting that readers make note of how much they’d pay each free agent were they, themselves, actual GMs.
In this edition: Omar Infante.

- Recorded a 3.1 WAR in 476 PA in 2013.
- Is entering his age-32 season.
- Made $4.0M in 2013, as part of extension signed in 2011.

Carson Cistulli has published a book of aphorisms called Spirited Ejaculations of a New Enthusiast.
I’d give hin 3 years @ 4.5 mil each with a team option for a forth @ 5 mil. I think he’ll get 4 years @ 7.5-8 mil per.
Whoa, that is a gross underpay. He’s definitely going to get more than that! Not market value since he has undervalued skills, but a lot more than 8 million I think.
Maybe give him the remainder of Dan Uggla’s contract:
2 years, $26 mil.
He will get less than half of what Cano’s going to get, but more than double what Izturis got.
I’d offer him 3 years, $22 million with a $10 club option for year 4. He’s worth more, but there seem to be more quality 2B now than in many years, so the market shouldn’t bid him up too much from there.
I’m assuming that the Tigers will make him a QO, given that they can afford to and are trying hard to win now. If they don’t, I’d bump him up $1-2 million per year on the above offer.
I’d say about 3 years at $11/year.
Any chance of doing this with players likely to see their arb years locked up? Perhaps a certain Pedro Alvarez? I’d be fascinated by his case.
I don’t like to pay too much for average so I go 3years for 19mil.
You’re not very smart if you think Infante is only average.

32 Years old.
Career High single season WAR of 3.1.
Not unreasonable to call him average, especially when referring to his expected production over the life of his next contract.
Tigers will bring him back and they don’t seem to care about money too much.
They’ll give him 4/$48

He can bat second and plays 2B? 3/45$ sounds right to me.
For the next 2-3 years I see him continuing to be an above average defender and an average hitter. He’s a very solid player. The Tigers aren’t as cash happy anymore, as they are likely to deal Scherzer to save for Cabrera’s new deal. I think they either resign Peralta and move Iglesias to second, or resign Infante and keep Iglesias at short. I’d rather have Peralta because of his bat, but I like Iglesias’ range alongside Cabrera. Which is a whole other issue, Ideally I would try like hell to dump Fielder and move Cabrera to first base. I don’t see the Tigers offering more than 2 years/25…but I think another team would go 3-4.
