Contract Crowdsourcing 2013-14: Phil Hughes

Free agency begins five days after the end of the World Series. As in other recent offseasons, FanGraphs is once again facilitating this offseason a contract-crowdsourcing project, the idea being to harness the wisdom of the crowds to the end of better understanding the 2013-14 free-agent market.

Note that, this year, in addition to asking readers to estimate the years/dollars each free agent is likely to receive, FanGraphs is also requesting that readers make note of how much they’d pay each free agent were they, themselves, actual GMs.

In this edition: Phil Hughes.

Some relevant information regarding Hughes:

  • Has averaged 137.1 IP and 1.4 WAR over last three seasons.
  • Has averaged 1.9 WAR per 180 IP over last three seasons.
  • Recorded a 1.3 WAR in 145.2 IP in 2013.
  • Is entering his age-28 season.
  • Made $7.15M in 2013, avoiding arbitration with Yankees.

Using the form below, estimate the years and average annual dollar values both likely and ought to be received by Hughes this offseason.

Other Players: Bronson Arroyo / Carlos Beltran / A.J. Burnett / Marlon Byrd / Robinson Cano / Shin-Soo Choo / Bartolo Colon / Nelson Cruz / David DeJesus / Stephen Drew / Mark Ellis / Jacoby Ellsbury / Scott Feldman / Gavin Floyd / Matt Garza / Curtis Granderson / Roy Halladay / Jason Hammel / Dan Haren / Roberto Hernandez / Tim Hudson / Omar Infante / Adam Lind / James Loney / Brian McCann / Nate McLouth / Kendrys Morales / David Murphy / Mike Napoli / A.J. I would love for the braves to go after him as a reliever, although I think san diego (or some west coast team with a big ball park) may take a 1 year 3-4 million dollar flyer on him with a vesting option as a starter. I am highly confident major league caliber stuff is there, but he may be best for a inning or two rather than 5 or 6.

I’m interested to see what kind of deal he gets. Obviously, after the year he had there’s no way he’ll get the contract he hoped for, but I remember reading articles earlier this year that mentioned the Anibel Sanchez contract when referencing him. 1 year, 3-4 million would be a tough pill for him to swallow.
