Two Useful Tables Regarding First-Round Draft Signees
A Note on the Following
On Sunday, we published in these electronic pages a table of the first-round picks who’d signed so far, along with (a) the amount of each signee’s bonus, (b) MLB’s suggested bonus for each corresponding slot, and (c) probably some really well-crafted prose that improved your outlook on life.
In any case, what follows is that same table, updated to include signings that’ve occurred in the interim.
Table: 2012 First-Round Draft Signees, Updated
The following information has been aggregated from Baseball America, MLB Trade Rumors, My MLB Draft, and also the Entire Internet. Players marked with an asterisk (*) have signed since Sunday.
Player | Team | POS | Pick | Slot | Bonus | New |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Carlos Correa | Houston | SS | 1 | $7.200 | $4.800 | |
Byron Buxton | Minnesota | OF | 2 | $6.200 | $6.000 | * |
Kyle Zimmer | Kansas City | RHP | 5 | $3.500 | $3.000 | |
David Dahl | Colorado | OF | 10 | $2.700 | $2.600 | * |
Gavin Cecchini | New York NL | SS | 12 | $2.550 | $2.300 | |
Nick Travieso | Cincinnati | RHP | 14 | $2.375 | $2.000 | * |
D.J. Davis | Toronto | OF | 17 | $2.000 | $1.750 | * |
Michael Wacha | St. Louis | RHP | 19 | $1.900 | $1.900 | * |
Chris Stratton | San Francisco | RHP | 20 | $1.850 | $1.850 | * |
Lucas Sims | Atlanta | RHP | 21 | $1.825 | $1.650 | |
Stryker Trahan | Arizona | C | 26 | $1.700 | $1.700 | |
Clint Coulter | Milwaukee | C | 27 | $1.675 | $1.675 | |
Victor Roache | Milwaukee | OF | 28 | $1.650 | $1.525 | |
Lewis Brinson | Texas | OF | 29 | $1.625 | $1.625 | * |
A Note on the Above
As was the case with the draftees who’d signed by Sunday, it remains the case that precisely zero teams have signed a first-round pick for a dollar amount above the amount suggested by Major League Baseball. The Houston Astros, in particular — by signing their first-overall pick to ca. $2.5 million less than slot — have created a surplus of funds with which they can address their other draftees, need be.

Video of a Signee
For no reason in particular, here’s video of Cardinals’ signee Michael Wacha, who, according to Kendall Rogers of Perfect Game, “tops out at 95 mph, but consistent[ly] throws his fastball at 92-94 mph. Changeup comes in at 81-84 mph.”
Stats of That Same Signee
Here’s Wacha’s line from Texas A&M this season: 113.1 IP, 9.2 K/9, 1.6 BB/9, 0.3 HR/9. By comparison the entire Aggies team (which finished 16-8 in the Big 12) recorded this line: 554.1 IP, 7.6 K/9, 2.3 BB/9, 0.4 HR/9.
Today’s Notable Games
Boston at Miami | 19:10 ET ***MLB.TV Free Game***
The Red Sox’ most dominant starter starts tonight: Felix Doubront. His strikeout rate of 24.6% (9.77 K/9) is the best among Sox pitchers who’ve made at least two starts.
Readers’ Preferred Broadcast: Boston Radio.
New York NL at Tampa Bay | 19:10 ET
“R.A. Dickey (81.0 IP, 79 xFIP-, 1.6 WAR) is having the best season ever for a knuckleballer,” I’ll announce without having done any research on the matter, except in the part of my brain responsible for making grand claims.
Readers’ Preferred Broadcast: New York NL Television.
Today’s Complete Schedule
Here’s the complete schedule for all of today’s games, with our very proprietary watchability (NERD) scores for each one. Pitching probables and game times aggregated from MLB.com and RotoWire. The average NERD Game Score for today is 4.9.
Note: the following Game Scores include the poorly conceived playoff-odds adjustment discussed in a recent edition of Daily Notes. Also note: the following table is entirely sortable.
*Note: as pointed out by Kyle Lobner in the comments area, Jonathan Sanchez will be starting in Luke Hochevar’s place. That gives the game and overall score of just 1. Meanwhile, it appears as though Mat Latos will replace Mike Leake, leaving that Game Score unchanged.

Carson Cistulli has published a book of aphorisms called Spirited Ejaculations of a New Enthusiast.
FYI – The Royals changed up their rotation and are now pitching Jonathan Sanchez tonight, not Hochevar.
