Sandy Koufax: The Cubs lack of top-line pitching prospects is well known, but there are a few players in the lower levels showing promise. What are the next steps (improvements) for pitchers like Trevor Clifton and Dylan Cease?

Dan Szymborski: Really, in Cease’s case, just keeping healthy and improving command. Clifton needs to keep working on the changeup, which is way improved over last year.

mtsw: Of the Orioles’ shaky starters, which are you least uncomfortable being the 4th (or 3rd if they have to shutdown Bundy) starter in a playoff rotation? They aren’t seriously going to start Ubaldo in game 3 of a potential ALDS are they?

Dan Szymborski: Trying ot make me cry? I’m actually more worried about Gallardo, simply becuase Ubaldo kinda runs into good games once in awhile, while even a good Gallardo game feels kind of mediocre.

Dan Szymborski: Though I’d prefer to see neither of them.

Burts_beads: I’ve heard in multiple chats that Mike Aviles is “an awesome person” and clubhouse presence and that’s the reason he’s still on a roster these days. I’ve heard this from multiple writers and I was wondering why this is the universal opinion. Why is Aviles so awesome? I’ve never really heard any reasons why

Dan Szymborski: That I couldn’t tell you – I don’t think I’ve ever even spoken to him. And I’m uncomfortable rating a guy’s personality second-hand.

Zonk: The 2016 Cincinnati Reds are on track to be, by Fangraphs WAR, the worst pitching staff since the 1890 Alleghenies. That Alleghenies team went 23-112, surrendered 1253 runs, and was so bad they only threw 119 complete games. The Reds are making that kind of history!!!!!

Graves: Why do people care so much about team context for MVP but disregard it for Cy Young and ROY Awards?

Dan Szymborski: The word “valuable” in the name gives a lot of wiggle room for arbitrary nonsense.

Graves: Will the NL ever adopt the DH? Do you think someday baseball will have 9 DH spots, like a football team with offense and defense?

Dan Szymborski: Yes, no.

Zonk: Is De Jon Watson’s departure from AZ a harbinger of more shoes dropping in that front office? Did LaRussa seal his fate with that unnecessary contribution to the Kaepernick-flag thing?

Dan Szymborski: It seems logical that La Russa and Stewart are toast, but Arizona is great at defying logic.

Fire Kevin Cash: Kevin Kiermaier denied a grand slam without making a catch–he still saved three runs, but didn’t get an out and added a baserunner at first. Does this show up in defensive metrics, and how? (Related: does Canseco get knocked for the home run off the noggin?)

Dan Szymborski: I don’t believe so.

Jedidiah: Are you buying shares of Kennys Vargas for 2017?

Dan Szymborski: Depends how cheap they’re trading at. Remember, he wasn’t actually good at AAA this year.

Alex: Patrick Weigel has been the unsung prospect to come out of the dominant Rome Braves staff. Do you see him being a top 100 prospect soon?

Dan Szymborski: Could be. He’s got the fastball and his secondary stuff is improving, especially that hard slurvey thing he throws.

Alex: Ender Inciarte is quietly on pace to break the Braves second half hits record. Do you think the braves hold onto him or move him for someone like Quintana or Archer?

Dan Szymborski: Depends on offers. If you can get someone like that, you move him.

Leif Erikson: When the baseball season is over, I’m moving to where ever you live Dan, and we are going to practice our knuckleballs until we get signed to a minor league deal. After signing we will manipulate ZiPS to make us look awesome in hopes Tony LaRussa will see the ZiPS projections and think they are our actual stats and throw a couple million $$ our way. Are you in?

Dan Szymborski: I don’t think La Russa looks at ZiPS.

Hank: Markakis sure is looking a whole lot better. Not sure if you knew, he had a dreadful 2 weeks early in season, when you minus that 15 games or so, he’s a 116 OPS+ play with a 780 OPS.

Dan Szymborski: Everyone looks better when you subtract their worst performances.

Dan Szymborski: He also looks worse than his current OPS+ if you minus the *last* 15 games or so.

groucho: Who do you like in the NL wild card race?

Dan Szymborski: Mets/Cardinals

Southi: Do you think that this off season the Braves might seek to flip Markakis for a under performing arm on a short contract such as Liriano, Jimenez, or someone else who might bounce back with a change of scenery and the reboot of another season? Not necessarily a one on one swap but as the meat of the deal? Who would you think would be the most likely candidate if it is possible? Obviously it isn’t a sexy type move but one that the Braves might at least think about.

Dan Szymborski: More plausible than the dreams of trading Markakis for prospects people ask me about every week it seems. Some kind of trade like this is at least a possibility.

Dan Szymborski: WHY DO YOU GUYS ASK SO MANY NICK MARKAKIS QUESTIONS?

groucho: Which scenario is more likely: Tebow makes it to the majors, or makes a return to the NFL?

Dan Szymborski: MLB actually. It’s a long shot, of course, but he’ll at least get a chance to show competence in the minors.

Zonk: What NL rebuilding teams, in your opinion, had the best overall seasons in terms of getting back to respectability? Can you rank: PHI, ATL, MIL, CIN, SD.

Dan Szymborski: PHI, MIL, ATL, SD, CIN

Dan Szymborski: Though its tricky – are we talking about just the days of the season?

Dan Szymborski: In that case we’d move up SD and probably MIL

Alex: Don’t you think the Braves would get more bang for their buck if they employed 500k randoms at corner outfield over Markakis and Kemp, they’d likely get more value, considering Nick/Kemp are pretty worthless at their salaries.

Dan Szymborski: Yeah, rebuilding teams shouldn’t care about high floors, only high ceilings.

Zonk: Even though they are a losing team, in terms of moving forward the Brewers had a very good year, didn’t they?

Dan Szymborski: Well, yeah

Q-Ball: Did scouts miss on Javy Baez’s defense? The bat hasn’t been as good as advertised, but his defense is really terrific, and coming up everyone said he would be forced to 3B. Thoughts?

Raindog: As an O’s fan I’m not sure whether I’m more horrified at the prospect of extending Wieters or having Wieters leave. What’s a fair balance of my fears? 3 yrs, $40M?

Dan Szymborski: I have no idea what’s worse.

Dan Szymborski: I think the best scenario would be Wieters turns down a QO

cc: Gary Sanchez leads all AL rookies in fWAR. Should he really need ~200 additional replacement level PAs earlier in the season to win the award?

Dan Szymborski: Not necessarily, but fWAR is going to be lower on Fulmer than any voter, I expect.

Kevin: Do you think the Braves should trade MVP candidate Freddie Freeman this offseason? They are wasting his best years away. They could get a monster package for him to take back the farm system trophy.

Eric: Matt Kemp has a 859 OPS as a Brave, move is looking very successful so far. Not too many big bats like him in baseball.

Dan Szymborski: He’s been balancing out his better-than-customary-Kemp-offense by somehow-worse-than-customary-Kemp-defense.

Dan Szymborski: Patience. But he’s not like it in a magic tier about himself.

Dan Szymborski: It’s improving, but there are a lot of narrative voters remaining.

Q-Ball: Let’s say the D-Backs fire the FO. If you are the new FO, what are your priorities? You probably have to try to win some games around Pollack, Goldy, Grienke, Miller, etc, next year, rather than full re-build…right?

Dan Szymborski: Only if I have the financial tools for a retool.

Rob: I know it’s a guess at this point, but which direction do you think the White Sox will go in……retool or rebuild? It seems foolish to me to retool again.

Dan Szymborski: Using the time to add knowledge of players is more important, losing only secondary.

Q-Ball: Matt Kemp and Jason Heyward have nearly identical WARs this year. Contract aside, who would you rather have had this year playing on your team?

Dan Szymborski: Well, Heyward. Because there’s more of a hope he plays better.

Q-Ball: AJ Preller got off light, but he was having a good year, IMO, in terms of re-stocking the farm and shedding regrettable deals before that happened. Am I right?

Dan Szymborski: The Padres had an excellent summer.

Erik: In what circumstances would voting for someone other than the WAR leader for MVP be a smart move?

Dan Szymborski: Large discrepancies between measurements, a high percentage from the more volatile component (defense)

Dan Szymborski: Lack of loyalty or effort, which unlike team quality *is* explicitly described by the ballot.

Mike: Your tweets over the weekend about 40+ homer guys with low WAR totals was fascinating. Lots of Adam Dunn! Was defense the big reason those guys appeared in that list, or was something else about their offense that year the big driver behind such low WAR?

Dan Szymborski: He was a very lousy defensive player.

Oneear: How many pitchers will the Cubs carry into October?

Dan Szymborski: 11?

Raindog: Dozier currently has 41 HR. How many more must he hit in the next 12 games before he gets a single first place MVP vote? At least 9, right?

Dan Szymborski: I think he’ll sneak out one.

Raindog: I’ve been asking various chatters: after Kershaw, Verlander, Felix, which active pitcher has best chance at HOF?

Dan Szymborski: Greinke still. Lester’s still in a position at which he could hit 260 wins.

Dan Szymborski: Colon-Randy Johnson, because the combination would look like the wrestler Vader with a mullet.

Dan Szymborski: Not off-hand, but Blair isn’t really the worst pitcher in likely ability.

Graves: I love the extra Wild Card team, I hate that it is a 1 game play in. What do you think is the best way to expand the postseason?

Dan Szymborski: I dont’ think of it as a problem. THink of it as punishing a wild card relative to a division winner

Dan Szymborski: Arrieta gets a concussion and afterwards insists that he’ll only throw lefthanded.

Kevin: What did Adiran Beltre’s 5-year ZiPS forecast look like when he left SEA after 2009? I am amazed at the production he has been able to provide since turning 31.

John: Home runs are being hit at a historic pace this season… why are we not seeing any player push 50+? Is the uptick in dingers resulting from more emphasis on having power throughout the lineup than there was in say, 2000?

Dan Szymborski: Nobody hit 50 in 2004. And I think 2000 only had one guy.

Matt: Let’s revisit this robot ump idea. What about an actual bi-pedal robot behind the plate? You could then allow for human error to be programmed to its vision. This then allows you not only to bring back manager arguing, but allows it to get physical. I imagine robot ump heads would be very similar to Rock ’em Sock’em Robots.
