Is a check swing reviewable on replay? Also, are there any good reasons why the 1B or 3B umpire should NOT call every checked swing? If replay was added to get calls right then MLB should adjust this rule as well. The whole concept of allowing the HP umpire to call them contradicts the “getting the call right” theme.

Eno Sarris: I don’t think it is, but it should be. But what if there was a chip in the bat and on the plate? What if robo umps? Is Tennis so bad?

So Twins people keep citing innings limits, but I’m trying to figure out what the logic is for letting Berrios reach his innings limit by annihilating AAA hitters, or letting him do it as the replacement for one of MN’s many poor performing, no ceiling pitchers. And if roster spots are the problem, why not at least shut him down for a week, to save those innings for Sept.? Given how it’s being handled, I feel that more pitchforks and torches should be involved.

Eno Sarris: I’m a national guy and I give him attention! Interviewed him even! Last night, I spotted him throwing a 96 mph two-seamer and a 91 mph two-seamer in the same at-bat. It’s possible the second was a changeup, but he told me he doesn’t throw those, so I think it’s possible he has four fastballs.

Eno Sarris: in the smallest samples, neither. Look at velocity, percentage of pitches, and then swinging strikes per pitch type. In a medium sample, xFIP is okay, but SIERA is better. FIP in bigger samples. ERA once you get past three years or so.

Eno Sarris: The fastball has a 10% whiff rate right now, which is twice the average. He found some rise on the pitch. Still has two above-average secondary pitches. Curve is meh. I’ll give him top 50 at very least.

Being a Mariners fan is a great exercise in finding reason for optimism. Ketel Marte has been a lot of fun so far. What do you see the Mariners doing with him in the future?

Eno Sarris: Weird thing is he looked like a free swinger and sometimes still does, but his swing rate is better than league average and he’s walking. If he keeps that up… problem is, his defense is also not plus, just like Miller. Anyway, it’s probably better than Miller, so there’s a chance that Marte is the shortstop next year. Maybe Miller is trade bait.

Eno Sarris: Asheville is the place to be. Wicked Weed and Highland. I like NoDa in Charlotte and Foothills in Winston-Salem, too. I see Big Boss in Durham area but I don’t know anything about them. Olde Hickory is good.

Eno Sarris: If you’re thinking a ton on the mound, maybe. But even Trevor Bauer told me he doesn’t like to think about that stuff on the mound too much, so most of the stuff I’m talking to players about happens in practice.

Eno Sarris: I think it would be a great move on their part, and I think it’s possible. People around the team suggested they could see it happening, and he’s supposed to be a polished if young guy.

Eno Sarris: Wow I don’t really love any of them. I’ll take VV for upside, he has a rise ball and two nice pitches and some velocity. Chase for floor, though Kyle probably has similar floor. Chase > Kyle in arsenal though.

Eno Sarris: Actually.. the fastball is good, the curve is decent and the change, we’ll see. Okay fade, not great drop, good velocity differential. Starting with a good fastball is nice, but maybe he doesn’t have a plus secondary pitch? I think he doesn’t suck so bad.

Eno Sarris: Has boosted his fastball two ticks this year and his curve is dropping more. Curve and four-seam only pitches above-average by whiffs, and none is plus, but no pitch really sucks other than maybe the change. Kitchen sink guy. Usable while in Oakland.

What are the cutoffs for classifying cutters vs sliders? Kluber and Arrieta throw a similar pitch it seems, but one is a cutter and the other a slider.

Eno Sarris: I don’t think Arrieta’s is as horizontal, and I’d call them both sliders, but usually it has to do with velocity and drop. Cutters are more horizontal with little drop compared to a fastball. They are designed to go in on the lefties’ hands without dropping into their happy zone.

On Tuesday’s Podcast, there was no mention of Fowler with the combo outfielders. He seems pretty good. Even in a non-OBP all that OBP translates to R and SB.

Eno Sarris: Yah I just couldn’t put him in the 10-15 HR/ 30 SB combo that we were talking about. He’s in the 15/15 group, which is relevant enough to the conversation that I would probably wait on a guy that doesn’t have great power with his speed.

Eno Sarris: My mom did but we lived in a third-world country where you would throw your trash in a hole in the backyard and much of the time they just let me run around naked and poop on myself and then hose it/me down. With diaper genies and trash pickup, I may be a bad person, but I’ll take the diapers.

Eno Sarris: Watch the news like a hawk because Carrasco could get shut down. They say he’s back September 6 but shoulders are scary and they have 3% chance right now. Pineda you always worry about. The rest are fine. I love Matz.

Is the Mets’ window essentially this year only? Pitching is so volatile and the line-up certainly won’t be this good again next year unless ownership finds some money under the mattress.

Eno Sarris: They deep enough that they can handle some regression from one or two of the guys. Their pitching should be good again, IMO. And a year for Conforto, a couple of guys in the minors that could get closer to helping with bats… No I don’t think this is their only window.

Eno Sarris: Not a great in-zone contact rate. Saw him miss a pitch on the inner half, low but in the zone, by about six inches yesterday. He’s a beast, but he’ll have some worse batting averages in the future.

Rebuilding in dynasty, any reason to hang onto Leonys Martin at this point?

Eno Sarris: Been thinking about that one, and I don’t think so. I mean, he’s basically a platoon accruer at best (.270/10/25 but you have to sit him vs LHP) and if he’s out in Texas, where’s he going to go.

What player valuation method do you use for fantasy? Z-scores? PVM? SGP? Something else?

Eno Sarris: I’ve used both Z scores and SGP, and I like Z-scores for most leagues, but SGP is decent in keepers/dynasties where there are keeper effects and the managers have stuck around for a while.

Can you fill me in on what Z-scores and SGP are?

Eno Sarris: Z scores are basically replacement level concept — take your players stats and value them over a replacement level in each category by z-scores, and then add up the z-scores for a value. SGP is standings-based — what is a stolen base worth in the standings. That has obvious flaws, but once you’re in a league with managers that stick around and there are tendencies (keeping certain stats), I think it can be more valuable.

Eno Sarris: Hmm, I read some stuff but none of it was very helpful. Talked to friends, that was helpful. Talk mostly about sleep habits. That’s my thing. Get them on a good path on sleep and you’ll be like me with my first child. Do it poorly and you’re me now, constantly tired.

Can you explain to me how a three-game WC series solves the problem of worse teams getting an advantage over better WC teams? Either way the worse team is in the DS while one of those two WC teams is not, and even the winner is at a disadvantage compared to the worse divisional team. The problem isn’t the randomness of the play-in game, it’s the disadvantage of the better WC team vis-a-vis the divisional winner.

Eno Sarris: I see it completely differently. I think the wild card winner should have a disadvantage. I hate the randomness of the one-game playoff. Though it is sort of delirious.

The argument against the randomness of the one game playoff is almost at its lowest point re: CHN/PIT, however, so I don’t understand why it’s rearing its head now. If anything, that randomness is good! One of those teams won’t be eliminated per se because they’re a game shy of the other (as under the old rules) and they’ll have some tiny bit of control over whether they proceed. The randomness concern seems better-suited to the AL, where a very-good AL East team might lose a coin flip to a .500 team.

Eno Sarris: something I like about him, so I’ll push it as far as my rosy glasses can go. .275/.330/.475 with 25 homers? Makes me nervous writing it, but it’s only a little growth in BB% and ISO, and he’s still only 23 with a hit tool that scouts always graded highly.
