Thoughts on Severino for the playoff run?

12:00
Eno Sarris: lovely

12:01
Comment From Tough critic
Is a check swing reviewable on replay? Also, are there any good reasons why the 1B or 3B umpire should NOT call every checked swing? If replay was added to get calls right then MLB should adjust this rule as well. The whole concept of allowing the HP umpire to call them contradicts the “getting the call right” theme.

12:01
Eno Sarris: I don’t think it is, but it should be. But what if there was a chip in the bat and on the plate? What if robo umps? Is Tennis so bad?

12:02
Comment From Eddie Brock
Rank streamers for today: Rodon, Ross, Smyly, Rubby

12:02
Eno Sarris: Smyly Ross Rodon Rubby

12:02
Comment From Ullu Ka Patta
So Twins people keep citing innings limits, but I’m trying to figure out what the logic is for letting Berrios reach his innings limit by annihilating AAA hitters, or letting him do it as the replacement for one of MN’s many poor performing, no ceiling pitchers. And if roster spots are the problem, why not at least shut him down for a week, to save those innings for Sept.? Given how it’s being handled, I feel that more pitchforks and torches should be involved.

12:03
Eno Sarris: I been mad

12:03
Comment From Bartleby
You buy JD Mart and Blackmon as keep-4 guys for 2016? Right now I’m looking at JDM, CB, Bryant and Schwarburger. No elite studs there, but I like the overall balance of power, speed and a reasonable AVG.

12:03
Eno Sarris: you fine

12:03
Comment From Lars
Who might be a good fit for an incoming Mariners GM? An org with expensive older players demanding a win-now approach, but a decimated farm system?

12:03
Eno Sarris: Dave Dombrowski?

12:03
Comment From Xolo
Tyson Ross projects for +4.5 WAR. When does he start getting national attention?

12:04
Eno Sarris: I’m a national guy and I give him attention! Interviewed him even! Last night, I spotted him throwing a 96 mph two-seamer and a 91 mph two-seamer in the same at-bat. It’s possible the second was a changeup, but he told me he doesn’t throw those, so I think it’s possible he has four fastballs.

12:04
Comment From Pat S
Do you guess Carrasco is shut down by the tribe?

12:04
Eno Sarris: Yeah they have like what a 2.5% chance?

12:05
Comment From Joe
Should we pay attention to FIP or xFIP more?

12:06
Eno Sarris: in the smallest samples, neither. Look at velocity, percentage of pitches, and then swinging strikes per pitch type. In a medium sample, xFIP is okay, but SIERA is better. FIP in bigger samples. ERA once you get past three years or so.

Is Donaldson starting to run away with MVP?

12:08
Eno Sarris: I couldn’t find great evidence that Trout was hurt in the numbers, so there’s still time for him to make it a better argument.

12:08
Comment From Josh G
Has Verlander put himself into top 30 starter status again for next year?

12:09
Eno Sarris: The fastball has a 10% whiff rate right now, which is twice the average. He found some rise on the pitch. Still has two above-average secondary pitches. Curve is meh. I’ll give him top 50 at very least.

12:09
Comment From Nelson
Nate Karns never really goes deeper than 5-6 innings, even if doing well. Do you think that will change next year? I like him and want to keep him, but not if he never goes deep enought to get W’s.

12:10
Eno Sarris: I like him, and the change has gotten better, but with his age, I think he’s a decent guy to sell now.

12:10
Comment From Kris
Soler was dropped in my keep 6 league, and need to own him this weekend if I’m keeping him next year. Could you pick two between: Last round Buxton, last round Dickerson, last round Soler, 16th round Rendon. Thanks!

12:10
Eno Sarris: I love Soler but the Buxton Dickerson combo is pretty hot.

12:10
Comment From Nelson
Your top shortsop in fantasy for the pas month and half……Not Correa….Franciso Lindor, 2 ladies and Gentleman.

12:10
Eno Sarris: Way better stick than I thought, but if you look at his seasonal numbers, I’d say that’s about as much as you can expect from him.

12:11
Comment From Geno
Being a Mariners fan is a great exercise in finding reason for optimism. Ketel Marte has been a lot of fun so far. What do you see the Mariners doing with him in the future?

12:12
Eno Sarris: Weird thing is he looked like a free swinger and sometimes still does, but his swing rate is better than league average and he’s walking. If he keeps that up… problem is, his defense is also not plus, just like Miller. Anyway, it’s probably better than Miller, so there’s a chance that Marte is the shortstop next year. Maybe Miller is trade bait.

12:13
Comment From Joe (10-team mixed H2H)
Where does Carlos Correa get drafted next year?

12:13
Eno Sarris: Second round?

12:13
Comment From Ethan
Eno! I will be in North Carolina (specifically Durham) next week for a wedding. What beers should I look out for while I am there? I am driving so I plan to make the most of the trip. Any recs for specific breweries to keep an eye out for? Thanks man

12:14
Eno Sarris: Asheville is the place to be. Wicked Weed and Highland. I like NoDa in Charlotte and Foothills in Winston-Salem, too. I see Big Boss in Durham area but I don’t know anything about them. Olde Hickory is good.

12:14
Comment From roto-loser
Do you think Jose Fernandez gets a few starts in this season?

12:14
Eno Sarris: They saying yes. So I believe them I guess.

12:15
Comment From Neal
On a scale oh Phillies to Padres, how screwed are the Orioles next year?

12:15
Eno Sarris: Dunno, there are a couple interesting pitchers in that system, and some great young players still… they might have some money. I wouldn’t put them on that scale.

12:15
Comment From Minty
Carrasco or Carlos Martinez next year? The shoulder and AL factor worry me.

12:15
Eno Sarris: C Mart

12:16
Comment From Pale Hose
You get a lot of thoughtful responses from players, but have you ever come away from an interview feeling that a player is overthinking something?

12:16
Eno Sarris: If you’re thinking a ton on the mound, maybe. But even Trevor Bauer told me he doesn’t like to think about that stuff on the mound too much, so most of the stuff I’m talking to players about happens in practice.

12:16
Comment From Minty
With the Dodgers’ bullpen struggles, does this increase the chances that we see Urias in relief now and starting by mid next summer?

12:17
Eno Sarris: I think it would be a great move on their part, and I think it’s possible. People around the team suggested they could see it happening, and he’s supposed to be a polished if young guy.

12:17
Comment From Chef Jim
Ottoneu. My $5 Stroman for his $19 Rendon. I have Turner at 3b and Dozier at 2B. Yay or nay?

12:17
Eno Sarris: If you in it this year and need offense, maybe. Stroman strikes me as a better keeper at 7 vs 21 Rendon though.

12:18
Comment From Hoff
A couple of good pickups were available this week, who do you like more as a keeper option for 2016, Medlen or Trea Turner?

12:18
Eno Sarris: Trea

12:18
Comment From Houzer
What strategy can I use to plug Shark in for spot starts?

12:18
Eno Sarris: Pitcher parks? Has a bit of homeritis.

12:18
Comment From roto-loser
Can you rank Severino, Matz, Nola, Heaney and Berrios ROS? Assuming Berrios forces his way up soon.

12:18
Eno Sarris: Severino Matz Nola Berrios Heaney if he’s up, maybe Berrios third. But I’m done yelling about it.

12:19
Comment From Josh G
How many more starts do you expect to see from Aaron Nola before he gets shut down? Would you drop him for Jose Berrios speculating on a September call up?

12:20
Eno Sarris: Nola pitched in college last year. He accrued 175 innings. He has no limits.

12:20
Comment From brad
The Dbacks would be pretty good if they could get any sort of decent pitchin, huh?

12:20
Eno Sarris: I like how they got a ton of live arms, and it looks like Rubby might work out. They not as crazy as they seemed.

12:20
Comment From Houzer
Chance Pomeranz really is the new closer in Oak?

12:21
Eno Sarris: Pretty good. They haven’t gone to Rodriguez and Scribner is done and even though I love Doolittle the man, he’s only at 92 or so right now and has to prove himself a bit.

12:21
Comment From Curt Schilling
I’ve never done this, but would you ever do this or do this for this deal? Trade deadline has passed in our dynasty league, but this guy wants my Strasburg for his Addison Russell and Shelby Miller. He wants to post it on the league page and then have it pushed through after the season is over. Would you ever do a deal like this and would you do this one if so? Thanks.

12:22
Eno Sarris: I mean you’re just agreeing to a trade in the future, after the season is over? That seems fine. I’d do that deal.

12:22
Comment From jsnats
so can we write off the Nationals now?

12:23
Eno Sarris: They look pretty bad. Zimmerman has turned it around, but Rendon needs to find it too, and Span. Look at that talent though. With Ross in the rotation, they could run off a string of wins. I’m not going to write their epitaph.

Comment From Ehhh
Does Osuna’s amazingness transfer with him if he’s made a starter next year?

12:23
Eno Sarris: They haven’t been talking about it, have they? He does have three pitches, but I think he’ll be a closer.

12:23
Comment From Eddie Brock
When you talked to Jungmann did pitching at altitude while at AAA come up at all? I’m interested to hear if guys have any pros/cons of that environment before hitting the bigs.

12:24
Eno Sarris: No, but Thor told me that pitching in Vegas made his changeup better because his curve wouldn’t bite and he had to do something.

12:24
Comment From L. Scott
On a radio spot the other day Ron Darling mentioned the idea of having Syndegaard and Matz in the postseason bullpen. Brilliance? Or too much pressure on rookie players?

12:24
Eno Sarris: Blech. Colon, if he would do it — he wouldn’t for the season, but maybe in the postseason — would be a great reliever.

12:24
Comment From Nelson
I know its hard because its your job, but to ever get tired of the whole beer rat race and just wish you had a case of sculpin (or some other old stand-by) and could just ignore all new releases, trades, hype, etc

12:24
Eno Sarris: I’ve been slowly mixing in more old standards when I buy, for money reasons too.

12:25
Comment From JR
Who do you like better long-term? Chi Chi Gonzalez, Vincent Velasquez, Robbie Ray, Chase Anderson, or Kyle Hendricks? Who has the highest upside?

12:25
Eno Sarris: Wow I don’t really love any of them. I’ll take VV for upside, he has a rise ball and two nice pitches and some velocity. Chase for floor, though Kyle probably has similar floor. Chase > Kyle in arsenal though.

12:25
Comment From Josh G
What do you think of Jimmy Nelson ROS after that 8 walk outing?

12:26
Eno Sarris: Always thought his command was iffy and people asked me why I thought that.

12:26
Comment From Bart
Who’s a better keeper for next season, Votto or Freeman?

12:26
Eno Sarris: Non OBP, Freeman. He’s younger.

12:26
Comment From Walt
I’m heading to Iowa next week (Cedar Rapids). Is there any hope to find good local beer there? HELP!

You buying Stroman or Carrasco next year?

12:27
Eno Sarris: Carrasco way more strikeouts, I’ll take CC.

12:27
Comment From Josh G
Does this go down as AJ Pollock’s career best season? What kind of power upside does he have from here, if any?

12:28
Eno Sarris: He’s 27. Maybe he hits 18 or so next year, but I doubt he ever does much more than 20. on pace for like 16 this year.

12:28
Comment From Dallas
Dogfish head 60 minute looks/tastes more like a white Porter. It’s good but I doubt they intended this. Ever try?

12:29
Eno Sarris: Of course. I think you mean more like a light barleywine? When you get to the heavier ones, it’s more obvious it’s like a barleywine.

12:29
Comment From dave
fav episode of the Simpsons?

12:29
Eno Sarris: Dumbell Indemnity, the one where Homer has to try and crash the car to pay for Moe’s girlfriend but stops to watch Hail to the Chimp. Just like that it’s Double Indemnity, great old noir movie, and there’s a great scene in the bar when Moe’s speed dating.

12:30
Eno Sarris: Although the Springfield Nine one is of course, awesome sauce.

12:30
Comment From Frank
FYI, MLB Live subscriptions are only 10 bucks for the rest of the year.

12:30
Comment From Phil
Baez at .314/.381/.535 in the minors! What % of full time will he play when he comes up? What’s your best guess on a slash line?

12:31
Eno Sarris: 25% strikeout rate, second time at Triple-A, but only 22. I don’t see who he’s displacing other than La Stella though. He’s a righty, maybe he platoons at 2b/LF

12:31
Comment From Bill
Yankees eat about 80% of his contract, and trade ARod to Miami next year and he becomes player-manager. Any chance this happens?

12:31
Eno Sarris: Funny but 0%

12:32
Comment From Mr. Wrestling IV
Will Yelich become a 20+ homer threat anually?

12:33
Eno Sarris: I need to see SOME movement in his ground ball rate before I give him that. I could see Brett Gardner type career happening if he does hit a few more fly balls.

12:33
Comment From Marty
Had a nice time at Saber with some of your compatriots, when you coming out east dude? I need me some Eno-tainment!

12:33
Eno Sarris: Maybe once the baby is sleeping through the night. Feels like that will be in ten years.

12:33
Comment From JR
I can keep two of the following in an NL only league: Wong, Yelich, Duffy. Who would you throw back?

12:34
Eno Sarris: Not Wong, definitely not Wong. I could see dropping Duffy actually.

12:34
Comment From Marty
Sleeper holds candidates for the last month? I’m chasing one roto point which could be the difference.

12:35
Eno Sarris: Is Kela a sleeper? I just picked him up in a few leagues. I like Dan Hudson. Osich. Bryan Morris.

12:35
Comment From JR
Who’s Detroit’s closer next season?

12:35
Eno Sarris: rondon

12:37
Comment From brad
why does matt barnes suck so bad

12:38
Eno Sarris: Actually.. the fastball is good, the curve is decent and the change, we’ll see. Okay fade, not great drop, good velocity differential. Starting with a good fastball is nice, but maybe he doesn’t have a plus secondary pitch? I think he doesn’t suck so bad.

12:38
Comment From Jon
Chris Bassitt worth a pickup? Is he a viable long-term guy?

12:39
Eno Sarris: Has boosted his fastball two ticks this year and his curve is dropping more. Curve and four-seam only pitches above-average by whiffs, and none is plus, but no pitch really sucks other than maybe the change. Kitchen sink guy. Usable while in Oakland.

12:39
Comment From Bill
What is your favorite nickname in baseball right now?

12:40
Eno Sarris: I forget who it is now, stupid, but there was an old school player whose nickname was Tripod and wow.

12:41
Comment From Josh G
Raisel Iglesias: 2016 breakout or disappointment considering his current struggles vs lefties?

12:42
Eno Sarris: Sorting his pitches against lefties, still gets above-ave whiffs on change, slider, fastball versus them. I still lik him!

12:42
Eno Sarris:

12:42
Comment From J-Dog
Justin Turner or Kang at SS for the rest of the year?

12:42
Eno Sarris: Kang. I know they sat him for Mercer one time, but I think he’ll play.

12:43
Comment From JR
In a league with categories of W, L, S, K, Holds, ERA, WHIP, would you consider basically punting SP?

12:43
Eno Sarris: Yeah that’s three categories for relievers (L, S, HLD) and two for starters (W, K), and then ERA/WHIP should go to RP too.

12:43
Comment From Joe
FYI, Roark is being stretched out to replace Joe Ross. So, he might have only the Cardinals start left.

12:44
Eno Sarris: Damn, that’s too bad.

12:44
Comment From roto-loser
Is Carson Smith droppable at this point?

12:44
Eno Sarris: He lost a ton of velocity. I think he’s hurt.

12:44
Comment From Lars
I’ve heard Dombrowski is off the market. Worth looking into any potential GMs, or just wait and see which names pop up?

12:44
Eno Sarris: Yeah, was a lark. They should have moved faster, I feel. Now you might be stuck with Jack another year.

12:44
Comment From Ehhh
They have been talking about it. He’s been a starter at every level he’s played at except for the majors. They are essentially doing what they did with Sanchez last year with him.

12:45
Eno Sarris: Ah, good, I was wondering if maybe I just hadn’t heard about it. He has a better arsenal than Sanchez, and I think he’s a decent keeper because he’ll either be a good starter or a good closer. Sanchez could take over for him if he goes to the rotation, wouldn’t that be fun.

12:46
Comment From Frank
Re: Nelson it was pouring rain last night.

12:46

Where does Sano stack up in 2016 drafts? Do you anticipate drafting him over guys like Freeman and/or Votto given he’s 22 and has shown great plate discipline along with the amazing power? Top 50 player in fantasy for 2016?

12:50
Eno Sarris: I don’t think I can push him that high because of his K%. More likely to hit .240 next year than .280.

12:50
Comment From Eddie Brock
What are the cutoffs for classifying cutters vs sliders? Kluber and Arrieta throw a similar pitch it seems, but one is a cutter and the other a slider.

12:51
Eno Sarris: I don’t think Arrieta’s is as horizontal, and I’d call them both sliders, but usually it has to do with velocity and drop. Cutters are more horizontal with little drop compared to a fastball. They are designed to go in on the lefties’ hands without dropping into their happy zone.

12:51
Comment From MSW
In a re-draft with Gattis and have Grandal on the bench. Can I cut Grandal at this point? He’s been quite meh for a month and a half and is now injured.

12:51
Eno Sarris: In a redraft yeah I guess.

12:51
Comment From Brock
If you were Mariano Rivera wouldn’t you charge $1k/hour to MLB pitchers to teach that cutter?

12:52
Eno Sarris: I guess but all he might be able to say is here, hold it like this and do this

12:52
Eno Sarris: Where’s my 1k

Late to the chat, so not to be annoying but what was the question about “They have been talking about it. He’s been a starter at every level he’s played at except for the majors. They are essentially doing what they did with Sanchez last year with him.” referring to? Osuna?

12:53
Eno Sarris: Osuna

12:53
Comment From Joe
On Tuesday’s Podcast, there was no mention of Fowler with the combo outfielders. He seems pretty good. Even in a non-OBP all that OBP translates to R and SB.

12:53
Eno Sarris: Yah I just couldn’t put him in the 10-15 HR/ 30 SB combo that we were talking about. He’s in the 15/15 group, which is relevant enough to the conversation that I would probably wait on a guy that doesn’t have great power with his speed.

12:54
Comment From Trapper
Do you pencil Paxton into the rotation next year or do you just assume he’ll be hurt, plan for another guy, and take any starts you can get from him?

12:54
Eno Sarris: Guess I plan on him being my sixth starter.

12:54
Comment From John
Is Carlos Rodon the kind of SP who has a good chance of getting his command under control in year 2, and becoming a dominant starter?

12:54
Eno Sarris: Yes, but I wish he had a change.

12:54
Comment From Richard P.
Is Jeff Sullivan strutting around grinning like an idiot after the timing of his Verlander piece?

12:54
Eno Sarris: I don’t think I’ve ever seen Jeff Sullivan strut. He kind of… lopes.

Comment From RotoLando
My wife is pregnant, and is reading a lot of mommy blogs (God help me). Did you ever try cloth diapers? It sounds like a bad idea to me…

12:56
Eno Sarris: My mom did but we lived in a third-world country where you would throw your trash in a hole in the backyard and much of the time they just let me run around naked and poop on myself and then hose it/me down. With diaper genies and trash pickup, I may be a bad person, but I’ll take the diapers.

12:56
Comment From Dan
Should I worry about any of these pitchers in my h2h playoffs. I should get a bye. Salazar, Pineda, Thor, Carasco or Richards. HSould I drop any for Matz or Stroman?

12:57
Eno Sarris: Watch the news like a hawk because Carrasco could get shut down. They say he’s back September 6 but shoulders are scary and they have 3% chance right now. Pineda you always worry about. The rest are fine. I love Matz.

12:57
Comment From Max
If you had to rank SP for next year, where would you put Nate Eovaldi? I’m starting to feel good about buying low on him in dynasty…

12:57
Eno Sarris: He’s inching into the top 75.

12:58
Comment From Jared
What do you see out of Mesoraco next year? He’ll have catcher eligibility but play in the outfield.

12:58
Eno Sarris: High variance, but the upper edge of his outcomes is super super tasty.

Will Jungmann be on a innings limit?

1:00
Eno Sarris: Nah

1:00
Comment From MSW
Is the Mets’ window essentially this year only? Pitching is so volatile and the line-up certainly won’t be this good again next year unless ownership finds some money under the mattress.

1:00
Eno Sarris: They deep enough that they can handle some regression from one or two of the guys. Their pitching should be good again, IMO. And a year for Conforto, a couple of guys in the minors that could get closer to helping with bats… No I don’t think this is their only window.

1:01
Comment From Joe
Are you worried about Schwarber’s K rate?

1:01
Eno Sarris: Not a great in-zone contact rate. Saw him miss a pitch on the inner half, low but in the zone, by about six inches yesterday. He’s a beast, but he’ll have some worse batting averages in the future.

1:01
Comment From Guest
Rebuilding in dynasty, any reason to hang onto Leonys Martin at this point?

1:02
Eno Sarris: Been thinking about that one, and I don’t think so. I mean, he’s basically a platoon accruer at best (.270/10/25 but you have to sit him vs LHP) and if he’s out in Texas, where’s he going to go.

1:02
Comment From Josh G
What player valuation method do you use for fantasy? Z-scores? PVM? SGP? Something else?

1:02
Eno Sarris: I’ve used both Z scores and SGP, and I like Z-scores for most leagues, but SGP is decent in keepers/dynasties where there are keeper effects and the managers have stuck around for a while.

1:02
Comment From RiMiggulous
Can we all just take a moment to appreciate Miguel Cabrera and his .370/.470/.600 line?

Eno Sarris: Z scores are basically replacement level concept — take your players stats and value them over a replacement level in each category by z-scores, and then add up the z-scores for a value. SGP is standings-based — what is a stolen base worth in the standings. That has obvious flaws, but once you’re in a league with managers that stick around and there are tendencies (keeping certain stats), I think it can be more valuable.

Wife and I are about to start trying to have a kid. Asked a bunch of friends what books they read to prepare and the universal response was “Don’t bother, nothing can prepare you.” Any advice? You read any books?

1:07
Eno Sarris: Hmm, I read some stuff but none of it was very helpful. Talked to friends, that was helpful. Talk mostly about sleep habits. That’s my thing. Get them on a good path on sleep and you’ll be like me with my first child. Do it poorly and you’re me now, constantly tired.

Can you explain to me how a three-game WC series solves the problem of worse teams getting an advantage over better WC teams? Either way the worse team is in the DS while one of those two WC teams is not, and even the winner is at a disadvantage compared to the worse divisional team. The problem isn’t the randomness of the play-in game, it’s the disadvantage of the better WC team vis-a-vis the divisional winner.

1:09
Eno Sarris: I see it completely differently. I think the wild card winner should have a disadvantage. I hate the randomness of the one-game playoff. Though it is sort of delirious.

Would you ever trade 3 average players (including a 3B, backup C, and SP) for a #2 pitcher? What circumstances?

1:10

1:14
Comment From Guest
The argument against the randomness of the one game playoff is almost at its lowest point re: CHN/PIT, however, so I don’t understand why it’s rearing its head now. If anything, that randomness is good! One of those teams won’t be eliminated per se because they’re a game shy of the other (as under the old rules) and they’ll have some tiny bit of control over whether they proceed. The randomness concern seems better-suited to the AL, where a very-good AL East team might lose a coin flip to a .500 team.

1:15
Eno Sarris: It’s not rearing it’s head, it’s something I’ve always railed against. It just happens to be close to the playoffs again. One game is not very baseball.

How much movement is possible in BA at this point?

1:38
Eno Sarris: Ah there you are. In July I found that you basically had to be as good as the first place team in ERA and WHIP in order to catch up, and I think BA is the same way. http://www.fangraphs.com/fa…

1:39
Eno Sarris: Actually that was for four points, but with a month gone, I’ll say it’s the same way. If you want one or two points in the cat, you’ll need to be as good as the first place team has been in BA going forward.

Comment From Joe
Castellanos seems like he is now on a steep growth curve. 2016 stats?

1:40
Eno Sarris: something I like about him, so I’ll push it as far as my rosy glasses can go. .275/.330/.475 with 25 homers? Makes me nervous writing it, but it’s only a little growth in BB% and ISO, and he’s still only 23 with a hit tool that scouts always graded highly.

1:41
Comment From Minty
Any thoughts as to what a 2016 Franco will look like?
