Eno Sarris: I think they’ll sign someone so that Jordan can be their number five and Detwiler and Roark are their backup plans. Not a big signing, but maybe something like Roy Halladay and/or another guy that would be cheap but might have some last gasp upside.

Eno Sarris: I think it’s Hamilton. They don’t have a ton of cash, I don’t think. Trade Phillips for a COF maybe, or a cheaper 2B with more OBP? Sign some depth pieces.

What team do you think surprises everyone the most this offseason?

Eno Sarris: I think it’s the Mets because of this: their payroll is down to $57million including arb and 500k per roster slot and some Bay and Santana money. That’s *really* low. If they don’t spend money, people will be surprised, or at least upset. If they do spend money, it will be the first time we get to see Sandy spend some money really.

Eno Sarris: So many of them. If a player depends on O-Contact like Pablo Sandoval and Josh Hamilton, I don’t like that, so that’s high up there. Then I like overall swSTR as a measure of which way their strikeout rate is generally heading.

I have cheap Wilmer Flores. Is he worth anything to anybody or should I just cut him and find a better use of the roster spot? Given he does have 2b eligibility though.

Eno Sarris: Problem is, he can’t play second base or the outfield, and unless he’s traded, he’s the third first baseman in line for play this year. On the other hand, he’s a prime trade candidate. Flores and Murphy are on the hottest seats, IMO.

Eno Sarris: So, I’d hold him as long as possible.

Eno Sarris: If only he hadn’t ended so badly, I’d tell you to aim higher. I think Adams can .275 and 25 or so, so that’s not bad. You always get less when you’re trading pitching for hitting. You could also try Craig… maybe go as high as Rizzo.

Eno Sarris: Addison Russell is getting closer and closer and Francisco Lindor is close too. All it might take is a late-season Jed Lowrie injury or Asdrubal Cabrera trade, which are both decently likely.

Eno Sarris: I’m assuming deeper than Bret Lawrie, so Cody Asche? David Freese might not be *this* bad. Will the Cubs bring up Baez to play third? Or give Olt a shot first?

Starling Marte, Andrew McCutchen, and Gregory Polanco could be the most exciting outfield in the league by 2015, no? Or you know. Giancarlo Stanton instead of Polanco.

Eno Sarris: I like Polanco a lot. If Burnett comes back, which I think he will, this is a solid team about to get better, not worse. Burnett, Liriano, Cole, Taillon, decent depth guys like Morton and more behind him, good pen and some arms they can convert to relief if the pen gets hurt, and they just need to get a little more lineup help. I might actually trade Polanco for Stanton, just unsure if Polanco AND Taillon AND more is a great idea for a team like the Bucs.

Eno Sarris: Great handle. Great question. Taveras will be behind Jay and Craig, and one isn’t great, and the other gets hurt. But the Cards wait on their guys forever. Beltran, even if he signs with AL team, will only be occasional DH in first year IMO, so I’ll take him.

Eno Sarris: Good park for his skills. Texas would be too. I think he’ll stay in a hitter’s park. $10-15 m per year, 2-3 years. You still need a hip to play first.

Eno Sarris: I dunno, I look at first and I’m waiting. Yeah, Goldschmidt is probably worth a first-round pick, but I don’t think any other first baseman is, and if I don’t get Goldy, I’m waiting. For a while. I don’t think I’d even spend a first round pick on Chris Davis. Prince Fielder was tenth at the position last year! Second base is always the place I look. Or shortstop. I don’t think that’s changed, or will, because those are premium defensive positions.

Eno Sarris: Abreu first. Even if there are questions, he’s the hitter and he ended up in a great spot to hit. Tanaka, if he ends up in an NL park, might nudge ahead. Guerrero is so far behind he’s not in convo. I think he’ll hit .250 with 18 homers or so.

Eno Sarris: Scoresheet has a defensive component but it’s a bit of a black box for me.

When you’re down to your last keeper and it’s choosing between a stud with a little value or a solid guy with a lot of value, which way do you lean? I can keep Matt Carpenter in the 18th or Beltre in the 3rd. My other three keepers are Machado (21st), Trout (22nd), and J. Fernandez (25th). We keep 4.

Eno Sarris: I like value. Even if you had to spend a second to get Beltre back, you’d still end up with 11 or so rounds of value from Carp.

Eno Sarris: I believe the definition of ‘not a bust’ in the research I’ve seen is 1.5 WAR plus per season.

Eno Sarris: So a regular but not average.

Eno Sarris: And 20 WAR would likely be not a bust.

Eno Sarris: Took my worst place team to a game or two out of the WC, so progress. Traded a reliever and a prospect for Donaldson, so now I have a third baseman and just need to add a little pitching in the offseason. Have Buxton and Zimmer, so some interesting talent coming.

Eno Sarris: I’m nervous about his strikeout rate, like I am with all the Marlins OF/OF prospects. And Ozuna adds a lack of BB%. But he’s good defensively and has more power than he’s shown. I think he can be a 3rd OF just on power alone.

Eno Sarris: Thanks to Steamer, we have a .265/.313/.397 projection, and I’ll take the over on their .274 BABIP. So I still think he can .280/.320/.420, but I guess i’ll usse that as my peak number. 20/5 in HR/sB.

Eno Sarris: Steamer has him with a sub-8 bb%, but he was double-digit in minors. So I’ll believe that a bit, and give him a .335ish OBP, maybe .340, with double-digit power and steals. Yeah that’s 12-teamer OBP MI action.

Eno Sarris: You have to wait on Burnett. Gausman is a pitcher, and unless you have eight hitters so far, I’d probably lena hitter. Choo vs Soler? OBP makes it a slam dunk for Choo, probably Choo anyway, consdiering your team.

I did extensive experiments in college relating beards to lady attention. In my experience, a beard allows ladies to self select based on their preference. The results showed that it was harder to pursue a hypothetical lady, but more ladies end up pursuing the bearded subject which yielded a net positive in lady attention. Sadly SSS caveats may apply.

Eno Sarris: I bet you can at least get him back for $40s. he’s not a $50 player after that year, even in a restocking draft where things can get crazy. Look at the teams that don’t have a keeper 1B, and where they are in standings. If the contendors have keepers, the rebuilders won’t stay in on a bidding after $40 or so IMO.
