Eno Sarris: I think he can manage 11-12 wins over the next four years. Owed 94 million. That doesn’t make him a young guy that’s cheap that you throw the house at. It’s the kind of acquisition that only the richer teams would make, so whatever the Sox, Yanks, Dodgers might want to throw at him. Maybe the Cubs, since they have money. But I don’t think you get the three best prospects from the Cubs.

Eno Sarris: Right handed… power… it’s not terrible, and with den Dekker, not a bad pairing. It’s all about price, which is why I tried to put in different options for each move. If they’ll take Gee for Carter, even with a small other part, giddyap. If they want a real piece? His defense is terrible, his OBP is terrible because of all the strikeouts, and he’s right-handed.

Your plan for the Mets makes sense to me but doesn’t seem to consider trading pitching and/or Murphy to the Red Sox for Allan Craig. Is that because you don’t expect him to be available? He seems like at least as good a fit as Cuddyer would be, no? And he’s inexpensive enough not to foreclose other opportunities to improve as well.

Eno Sarris: Sure, I think Craig is interesting. Put him in the Aoki mix. If you can get a 1+ win guy back in trade for less money than Colon or Colon+Murphy, then it’s great. Do the sox want Murphy and Colon? I’m not sure. So I think the most likely thing is that they dump Colon for salary relief and not much more. And no, I don’t think the Colon signing was dumb, it’s just that the young pitchers have begun to accumulate and look ready. deGrom, for instance, wasn’t supposed to be this good.

Eno Sarris: Over on homers, under on steals. I know he did the reverse, but aging curves of stolen bases, his history, and his age (25) suggest that power more likely to improve than SB total.

That wasn’t at all akin to anything the A’s would do or have done. If you wanted to attempt to mimic the A’s, you would’ve proposed adding someone like Daniel Nava, not Shane Victorino. Maybe attempt to add talent to the pen. Add some real depth behind the plate… Adding a bunch of C and D level FAs or injury reclamations is a nightmare scenario.

I find that I consider beers in less high esteem if they are brewed with adjuncts — an IPA that tastes like tropical fruit because it has tasty hops balanced against malty sweetness is cool, but one brewed with mangoes just isn’t all that cool. Eno Sarris: I’ve been writing about this all year! in the Chris Young piece, I found that yes, there are more straight homers up in the zone, but HR/FB peaks low and in, so there is a power spot low in the zone. Also, hitters are trained more and more to hit the low ball since pitchers were throwing it there, so there’s some benefit to throwing high in the zone. Lastly, power is down across baseball, so the bad effects from throwing high in the zone are lessened and the whiff effect is more valuable.

He’s a perfect deadline play for a team that’s in it but lost their third or second baseman.

What are IFFB a predictor of?

Eno Sarris: Really you want to use IFFB*FB = PU%. PU% correlates well year to year, around .6. So if you can get pop-ups, you get outs (popups 99% outs) and will look better than your K-BB rates suggest you should look. Look at Jered Weaver. If, as a hitter, you hit them, you’ll have a low BABIP. look at Brian Dozier or Simmons.

Eno Sarris: This was the weakest part of my plan in my opinion. I never thought Flores could play short and am still looking at his defense all jenky-eyed. But I don’t think they want to use the money to sign Lowrie, and throwing the farm at Tulo is unrealistic too. LF is the biggest need, so I focused there.

Eno Sarris: Now hold on this is not terrible. Even if Miller’s bat doesn’t come around completely and his D isn’t great, I don’t hate this one so much. his D will be better than Hanley’s, which isn’t saying much, and his swinging strike rate suggest better K% days ahead IMO.

Eno Sarris: Yeah the 25-26 peak had a bigger sample size. His new study is in post-PED era. So yes, that is confusing, and I think we should be skeptical, but it also seems clear that the game has changed some in the recent years.
