Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 12/18/24
11:21 |
: See you soon! In the mantime, it’s about the music, not the words.
|
11:56 |
:
|
12:01 |
I think the most important thing from all this Kemp physical drama is learning that his agent is MFing JUNIOR SPIVEY! |
12:01 |
: A world championship was not enough for the man. A world-class nickname was not enough for him. Rhyming with spidey was not enough for him.
|
12:01 |
Wait I had a question. Are the Cubbies done this off season? |
12:02 |
: I’ve got a piece going up today about biggest needs, and their corner outfield situation was on it. I think it’ll get filled with Kris Bryant.
|
12:02 |
What kind of fantasy value does Alex Rios have next season? Does he essentially ruin my dreams of Jarrod Dyson having significant value? |
12:03 |
: Dyson might be a little overexposed in everyday duty, and Rios is a righty, so there’s still a chance that Dyson gets the big part of a platoon with Rios if he’s not good (if he does what he did last year). But if Rios starts most of the year, I’d put him down for .275/10/20 and that’s fifth outfielder work, it’s not terrible.
|
12:03 |
If Bryant fills the outfield need, who takes the hot corner? |
12:04 |
: They’ve got plenty of infield pieces.
|
12:04 |
Seems like the Red Sox have set up their rotation 2 – 5. Chances they say screw it and throw $200 mill at Scherzer? |
12:04 |
: I think it’s more likely the Giants do that with the Pablo money.
|
12:04 |
: I just like writing Pablo money.
|
12:04 |
Eno, whats your favorite hop varieties? Imma huge fan of sorachi ace |
12:04 |
: Love that one, but mosaic and that fruit (or nelson) might beat it for me.
|
12:04 |
I imagine Eno taking interlude breaks in normal conversation and/or inopportune times. It causes 95% of the fights with the mrs. |
12:05 |
: Not far off. I often wander off with random interjections with no context and she yells CONTEXT
|
12:05 |
Danny Espinosa’s 121 wRC+ is against lefties, not righties. He’s on the short side of the platoon. From your piece that just got posted. |
12:05 |
: Fixed!
|
12:06 |
On a scale of “fine by me” to “they’ve lost their minds” where do you put the Padres? |
12:07 |
: Closer to fine by me than most. Was Trea Turner a top-ten prospect? If not, he still was a coin flip. I think Myers is better than a coin flip to be better than he was, and even if he wasn’t, he’s a productive major leaguer. We’ll see if Kemp is healthy.
|
12:07 |
How do I apply that cameron article on elite prospect value to dynasty? |
12:07 |
: If your prospect is not top 20, trade him without compunction.
|
12:07 |
Drainage drainage sump pump. Drainage drainage sump pump. |
12:07 |
szymbo doin’ the nats on twitch – http://www.twitch.tv/zimsmash |
12:07 |
What do you think of the Braves offseason thus far? It all seems like smart rebuilding with the exception of the bizarre Markakis signing. |
12:08 |
: Just trying to stay in it in case their kids come quickly or the ball bounces Chris Johnson’s way, I guess. The A’s are ‘rebuilding’ and signed Butler.
|
12:08 |
In terms of an AL-only league, is Kole Calhoun a top-20 OF in 2015? |
12:08 |
: Yes.
|
12:08 |
Hosting Christmas dinner (prime rib) in northeast. Need some good pairings/offerings. what’s good progression to follow in the way of styles? |
12:09 |
: I like saison, stout, double IPA to finish. That should progress in ABV and bitterness and give them a good range. Saison with salad, that’s bright and airy and peppery. Stout with potatoes/meat. IPA before dessert.
|
12:10 |
Inverse comment scrolling pleaseeee? |
12:10 |
: Goddammit I thought I pressed that button. Hold on.
|
12:11 |
: Huh I think I had it right. Let me know if it’s wrong now.
|
12:11 |
why is there a restriction on trading drafted players, anyway? |
12:11 |
: No real idea. I guess it’s the idea that baseball didn’t want teams trading draft picks. If you let them trade right after drafted, you could essentially trade draft picks.
|
12:12 |
: And I guess the idea *there* was that bad teams would get worse so baseball was keeping them from trading their picks to save themselves.
|
12:12 |
I’m scared that Votto will continue to be injured until he retires. |
12:12 |
: Could still be one injury that’s working it’s way out. I’m not hanging the prone label on him quite yet.
|
12:12 |
How does Mike Rizzo keep doing it? Year after year it seems he pulls of these trades. Matt Capps for Wilson Ramos. Michael Morse for AJ Cole (their #2 pitching prospect), Blake Treinen and Ian Krol. Lombo, Robbie Ray and Krol for Doug Fister. Is he the best trader in the game right now? |
12:12 |
: So far so good!
|
12:12 |
Just traded for some Gandhi Bot, can’t wait to try it. Ever have it? |
12:12 |
: No and I want.
|
12:13 |
Can you tell us awkward A’s suite stories? |
12:15 |
: When we got in there I was the only one that didn’t get a seat and Billy Beane had been looking at me so I felt like a little rookie. Then I asked him about moving Lawrie to second and projections, and he and I locked eyes and talked about our projection systems and what Semien was projected for and how he was going to get to two wins with a bad slash line and how the team was only four or five games back of the Angels and how they weren’t done and then he turned to the writers and told them all that they should read fangraphs and how Cameron was in his head and we’ve got a bug in their office and I was like, that’s nice but please stop telling them that because I have to work with these people. It was crickets when we left the room.
|
12:15 |
Eeeeno! I haven’t been in a chat with you for like 6 months! What’s up? What’re you occupying yourself with these days? Sandwiches? Beer? Baseballs? |
12:15 |
: Yah and burping babies.
|
12:15 |
Dude Sup |
12:15 |
: Sup.
|
12:15 |
What is the likelihood that I get traded this offseason? Seems like the buzz has died down recently |
12:15 |
: I’m guessing no.
|
12:16 |
: It’s a bit of the Hamels problem. I say, my player is awesome. You say, he’s expensive too!
|
12:16 |
Will this be the last Eno chat of the year? If so got any album or beer of the year picks? |
12:18 |
: I guess it might be! The beer I remember most about this year is not new. But pseudo Sue was so so so so so good. I also liked Cascade Sang Royal, a sour that tastes a lot like Consecration with a bit more jam. I’ll need to run the BeerGraphs rookie of the year query to see which new beer gets the love.
|
12:19 |
: (I also had Societe The Pupil and Prairie Bomb for the first time this year, I remember now.)
|
12:19 |
Which NL position player would most increase in value by being traded to an AL team and being allowed to DH? |
12:20 |
: Haha might be Duda. You could say Ryan Howard but that might not save him anyway.
|
12:20 |
what level of bat I should expect in return for Samardzija (dynasty)? Is asking for K Bryant ridiculous? |
12:21 |
: That seems like you’re aiming a bit high. You might be able to get a top ten *pitching* prospect with him though.
|
12:21 |
Please explain the Mets. They have solid SP, but adding Cuddyer to Murphy, Wright, Granderson, Duda, and d’Arnaud only makes them slightly better. Juan Lagares is not a leadoff hitter. Do you see them taking a flyer on Everth Cabrera to fill the SS/leadoff hitter need? |
12:22 |
: They keep talking about Cabrera’s off-field stuff, so I doubt it. I’m souring a bit on the front office. I do think the Reyes non-trade and the Wright extension smell terribly of Wilpon, so I don’t necessarily blame that on them. And their deals have been short. But they didn’t draft these pitchers and they need to hit on something, or be a little more aggressive I think.
|
12:23 |
We really gonna compare Souza to Zobrist with his ridiculous K rate? The helium on him is absurd |
12:23 |
: Souza doesn’t have the defensive value either. I did see that the exit speed of Souza’s bat led the AFL a couple years back, so maybe there’s some ability to hit the ball hard that will survive the strikeouts. Otherwise, you’d think they would have held on to Turner.
|
12:24 |
have you had any Cincinnati beer? Rhiengeist and Madtree both have some well regarded offerings |
12:24 |
: No I want to try more. There’s great beer there.
|
12:24 |
Where do you stand on WIl Myers’s ceiling, more Delmon Young or more Jay Bruce? |
12:24 |
: Jay Bruce for me. I think he can play okay defense and I don’t think he’s done improving on offense.
|
12:24 |
will you be taking cold showers in cuba soon? |
12:24 |
: I really do want to go.
|
12:24 |
The Indians, White Sox, Tigers, and Royals have made interesting moves. Who is the favorite to finish 3rd and 4th in the AL Central? |
12:25 |
: I’ll take the Indians to push the Tigers the most. I like them.
|
12:25 |
Have you/Rotographs ever considered putting out an annual similar to the Forecaster? |
12:25 |
: We have FG+. We may print it some day.
|
12:25 |
best way to try and change a boss whos lazy and stubborn? |
12:26 |
: HR is your friend. Find a way to document the things he’s doing wrong. At some point, put your own job on the line and go to HR with complaints. It may turn into an exit interview, but they will listen to what you have to say, particularly if you can show your work.
|
12:26 |
It would appear that the mainstream projection systems are all the same. Do you blend or stick with Steamer or ZiPS? |
12:27 |
: I use both to rein in my optimism, but I’ll pick the nicer one of the two if I am optimistic. Maybe I’ll even add a few ticks, or a dollar of value, past the top projection. But I’m not going to pay for a player at $30 if Steamer says he’s worth $20.
|
12:27 |
Fabricate a guess for me, Eno: What year do the A’s make the ALCS, and what year do they have a new stadium? |
12:27 |
: 2017, 2020
|
12:28 |
From a timing standpoint, is it too early for the Cubs to consider moving one of their young infielder (i.e Baez) for a young, cost-controlled, high- upside young SP? |
12:28 |
: Yes. They need to get more information on who’s going to play where and if Edwards can start and what things look like with Lester at the top of the rotation.
|
12:28 |
you did, mooking needs to refresh |
12:28 |
: REFRESH!
|
12:28 |
would you trade Sale in dynasty? What would you want? |
12:31 |
: I’d want a lot. Like Betts/Syndergaard/x where x is a replacement SP for this year that I like. x could equal someone like Homer Bailey, perhaps. You give them an ace, and for your step back you get two long-term assets. If you can get a top-ten prospect like Bryant, plus the replacement SP, that’s okay, maybe better. I do like quantity if it’s good quantity.
|
12:32 |
So what do the Padres do with their 24 (often injured) outfielders? They can’t DFA them like the Dodgers, can they? |
12:32 |
: First base is actually semi-open…
|
12:33 |
Any good winter beer recs? |
12:33 |
: I really liked Epic Old Conundrum, and if the price/size combo doesn’t throw you off, Barrel Aged Old Rasputin is great.
|
12:34 |
Eno my man! I’ve offered some Bryant, Alex Wood and Pompey (mine) for Baez, Mookie, Drew Hutchison, and TJ House. Am I crazy, or is that a fair deal for both sides? |
12:34 |
: Yeah I don’t mind it. I think I like the Bryant side.
|
12:35 |
Who is Karns competition for the #5 TB SP spot, besides Moore? I like him, but I’m just Merv so… |
12:35 |
: It’s Moore so I’ll call Karns SP6, but super relevant in deeper than 12.
|
12:35 |
Would you keep Odor over Tanaka or Carrasco? |
12:36 |
: If they don’t trade for a right fielder using an infield piece, I think they’ll try Odor in the outfield. I’m smelling a full season out of him next year either way, and something like .260/.300/.410 with 15/15+ type work. I’d be shopping the pitchers.
|
12:36 |
Given your appreciation for beer, have you ever tried brewing it yourself? |
12:36 |
: yes and I’m bad but I’m about to start again
|
12:36 |
what’s the next step for moncada? |
12:37 |
: Declared eligible for signing by MLB.
|
12:38 |
Can Danny Santana put up decent enough numbers to last the year as the Twin’s SS? |
12:38 |
: No and yes. In that, I think major regression is coming, but yes I think he’ll stick.
|
12:38 |
What do you think we should do in a keeper with Tanaka and Garret Richards? Keep Gausman and Gio over those two? |
12:39 |
: No. Well Richards was a knee so even if he’s not ready for the season I’m more hopeful. Tanaka vs Gio… Probably still take Tanaka, but that’s worth thinking about.
|
12:39 |
Dude, trying to type and read your chat with my pupils dialated is wierd. Its like i cant see, but i can, you know? |
12:39 |
: whoa
|
12:40 |
In your hypothetical Plouffe to the Giants scenario, what kind of return would he get? a low level prospect? |
12:41 |
: Can’t imagine he’d be super expensive, right? If Crick doesn’t get any better, his upside might be enough but he wouldn’t actually count as a high-level prospect. If he gets better, maybe a couple other smaller pieces?
|
12:41 |
A wicked Weed sour better win ROY! |
12:41 |
: Can’t wait to see what happens with that.
|
12:41 |
Beer of the year is Grapefruit Sculpin for me. Had Sang Royal on Monday and loved it. Album of the year for me is Liars-Mess. In case anyone is wondering and I know that no one is. |
12:41 |
: Grapefruit Sculpin is like a shandy to me. I liked it but did not love.
|
12:41 |
I had Nancy from Allagash a couple weeks ago, call it recency bias, but that’s my beer of the year, and I tried ZD and Younger this year too. |
12:41 |
: whoa
|
12:41 |
Thoughts on Yelich for 2015? Batting 2nd? |
12:42 |
: Love love. I’ll pencil for .275/15/20 and I think the potential for a big bust out is there.
|
12:42 |
Is Allan Craig done? |
12:43 |
: I’ll put him on a bench, I’m holding in a 20-team 28-keeper, this might be damning with faint praise.
|
12:43 |
That Beane story is what I want press conferences to be always. |
12:43 |
: Was a media session but if it had played out in front of more people it would have been both more exhilarating and awkward.
|
12:44 |
:
|
12:44 |
So who has the inside track at the Jays closer role? Can they be serious about going with an internal candidate? If so, who? |
12:44 |
: My bet is Norris gets the starting job and Sanchez is the closer. Otherwise, it’s Cecil. That’s who I’ve got.
|
12:45 |
So next Padre trades: find sucker AL team to take Quentin. Package Wisler and Hedges for Beltre. Profit. |
12:45 |
: I think they were betting on Hedges as the replacement.
|
12:46 |
Do you see the new trend amongst mlb teams as simply being in contention for the second wildcard, and not necessarily being above the rest? |
12:46 |
: Yes, everyone’s diving for the middle.
|
12:46 |
Re: Lawrie. How much stock do you put into his comments about the turf causing the injuries? Could that scrappy Oakland team be a perfect fit for him? Chances at 20/20? |
12:46 |
: I’m doing a cautious buy where I can. I’m giving him one last chance because he’s attainable.
|
12:46 |
Over/under 5 MLB starts for Julio Urias in 2015 |
12:46 |
: Under
|
12:46 |
But seriously, can we all agree eye doc visits are the worst? “Here, hold your eye open while i a blind you with a light. Sir, please keep your eye open while i barely touch your eye with this microscope.” |
12:47 |
What the hell is going on in SD? I know about picking up overrated bats but first they deal away Grandal, so I figure it’s Rivera’s job now. Then they deal away Rivera!?!?!? Are they just planning on pitching to contact so that no one has to catch the ball? |
12:47 |
: Hedges is a great defender, framer in my mind. They have Rivera, and he’s way younger.
|
12:47 |
Does the Gavin Floyd signing dim your forecast for Danny Salazar any? |
12:48 |
: Now it’s Salazar competing with House and House was on all my sleeper lists. So it dims House a bit more for me, just because of stuff. But the SP6 there will be relevant.
|
12:48 |
What do you think happens with Luis Valbuena? Judging by his numbers the last 3 seasons, it looks like he could be a consistent 3 win player if given a full time job, but he would seem to be the odd man out in Chicago’s future (and maybe current) plans. |
12:48 |
: Platoon issues will keep him in a platoon. Perhaps with La Stella in a weird way (not with La Stella at third).
|
12:48 |
FG+? |
12:49 |
: Check it out! You get 12 articles of research on stuff like release point consistency and where the projections get things wrong, and then you get access to all ESPN insider stuff the rest of the way. And 1250 player caps that sit on the player pages and give you a little sum up of the player’s upcoming season.
|
12:49 |
BARLEYWINE AS DESSERT |
12:49 |
: Done.
|
12:49 |
I actually forgot about the Reyes non-trade. Wow. If I remember correctly he was injured around the deadline, but considering the lack of effort they made to sign him that is a pretty huge blunder. |
12:50 |
: I don’t think it was a serious injury, and they could have traded him for something for sure. But ownership wanted that batting title and some butts in the seats.
|
12:50 |
I hope the youre able to laugh at all the random comments from left field we all submit but you dont oublish. |
12:50 |
: Mostly they’re fun.
|
12:50 |
you talked about the jays pursuing utley or zobrist to fill 2b in your article today. what do they have left to offer to get either of those deals done? |
12:50 |
: Travis? I forgot about Travis, honestly. I should put him in. But I’m chatting.
|
12:50 |
HR is not your friend! |
12:51 |
: No, not normally, but how else you going to deal with a bad boss? I don’t think the boss’s boss really wants to hear from you.
|
12:51 |
How do you determine dollar values based on projections?(In fantasy) |
12:51 |
: We go through two methods here. Google Zimmerman and Standard Points Gained for one approach, and then Zach Sanders and fVARz for the other (which takes z-scores in each stat and sums them for value).
|
12:51 |
Weekly walk through the Safeway beer isle expecting to get a gigantic Sucks and then have to *settle* for Racer 5. Walked out with a 4 pack of Double Jack and a 4 pack of Green Bullet Trip IPA from Green flash! That’s alot of money on beer but I can’t wait to get home tonight! |
12:51 |
Seems like the Cubs could use Bryant defensively the way the Cards used Pujols his first few years |
12:52 |
Is that A’s stadium in Oakland? |
12:52 |
: I never thought the 49ers would do what they did but I’d guess yes.
|
12:52 |
What are my best 2 keeper options of these 3: Cespedes in the 8th, Chapman in the 14th, Bogaerts in the 24th? |
12:52 |
: XB, Chapman.
|
12:53 |
Are moated, guarded “Legends Suite” style sections that segregate the richest fans and best seats from the rest of the stadium offensively undemocratic and contrary to the spirit of America and therefore baseball? Talk me off the ledge on this. |
12:53 |
http://www.hardballtimes.co… (we must rise up)
: I’m with you |
12:53 |
i now lose Rene Rivera in my NL only league… WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY? |
12:53 |
: It will *really* be okay.
|
12:53 |
Cubs moving Ruggiano almost has to mean they’re looking for an OF, right? Can we expect they’ll go after someone legit, or are they really going to rely on 4 rookies once Bryant comes up (and field a tepid LF until then) |
12:54 |
: I doubt they sign Aoki or get Upton, so I think it will be internal. Coghlan into Bryant.
|
12:54 |
I’d still like to see Baez for Pederson… |
12:54 |
: Big ole monkey balls trade.
|
12:54 |
$12 marte or $14 buxton? is buxton a talent that should not be missed? |
12:55 |
: marte. Buxton rumored to have broken his collarbone, isn’t going to be in majors until late this year at best.
|
12:55 |
How’s the Alpine/New Belgium Super IPA |
12:55 |
: Half good.
|
12:55 |
: Let you guess which half.
|
12:55 |
Keep Wheeler over Sallazar? |
12:55 |
: Yes. You don’t lose out on stuff and you gain floor.
|
12:56 |
Do you have a parenting philosophy? |
12:56 |
: Try your best to have established meal and snack and nap routines. Try as hard as you can in the face of tantrums and disapproving family and the lack of freedom. Then freestyle sometimes.
|
12:57 |
carlos martinez is 2nd on your arsenal list. shouldn’t he be starting then? |
12:57 |
: I think he will be, that’s why I fudged him in since he wasn’t really a starter.
|
12:57 |
It seems to me that the Nats plan is to go all-in on 2015, take a bit of a step back in 2016 and then be back to a very high level in 2017 when you’d expect guys like Turner and Giolito to be around. And they could still win mid-80s or if things break right 90 games in 2016 and make the postseason. |
12:57 |
: I really like what Rizzo has done. I thought he might be trading away the future, but he’s kept an eye on it.
|
12:57 |
Whats the difference between wet and fresh hops? |
12:58 |
: Fresh was dried but never really stored. Wet was never dried. I prefer wet, it tastes very different.
|
12:58 |
:
|
12:59 |
Is Pompey the Blue Jays opening day CF? How much leash does he have, and what does a full season from him look like? 240/310/390 with something like 20-30 steals feel reasonable? |
1:00 |
: I’m going to say yes he gets in there. If it’s not him, they still need a platoon partner for (maybe both) Pillar and Saunders. yes because that’s Steamer plus power and I think he can do better than Steamer’s power.
|
1:00 |
cubs need another top of rotation guy to really compete. hammel seems more like a #4 than a #3. |
1:01 |
: Yes but they might find it somewhere without paying a prospect or big money.
|
1:01 |
In a long term keeper league (keep forever) – who would you be looking for if you wanted to trade Betts. The hype is out and I have league mates in Boston. |
1:01 |
: If he’s an outfielder, I think his short-term upside is probably .290/15/30. You might be able to sell him higher than that.
|
1:01 |
I’m having Nancy tonight |
1:01 |
not like that |
1:02 |
I want to see PIZZAGRAPHS. I want to engage in online pizza trading. I want to rate pizzas by attributes. |
1:02 |
: A true interlude.
|
1:02 |
Also, is there a simple way to get a rough $ to Round Value, for those of us in leagues that don’t use auction? |
1:02 |
: Rank by auction value, boom. We should have more tools for you in this regard this year.
|
1:02 |
Do you put product in your hair |
1:03 |
: I use DevaCurl products, so yes and no. Leave in conditioner? Counts I guess.
|
1:03 |
fyi i think moncada needs to be cleared by the treasury department before he can sign, it’s out of mlb’s control |
1:03 |
do you ever draft top high school talent in dynasty? like cameron or Brendan Rodgers? Our 1st ever minor league draft last yr cleared tons of talent. |
1:03 |
: I’m in a 20-team 28-keeper where they are in play but have to be kept in the 28. I have Peterson. Nobody wants him and I doubt I’ll keep him.
|
1:03 |
Do you think Hanley Ramirez can be a top 20 hitter playing in Boston if he can stay healthy most of the season? |
1:04 |
: I doubt that he can stay healthy.
|
1:04 |
you try the 2013 Almanac bourbon sour porter? i dug it, had it barrel aged beerfest called big wood in seattle |
1:04 |
: I’ve said before that the sour porter changed my life. It has the depth and mouthfeel of a porter and the tangy end of a sour. So so so so so great.
|
1:04 |
How insultingly low can the Mets go on Kang (SS) before his club team rejects it? I can’t imagine he’d get anything like the Cuban players have been getting. |
1:05 |
: I just read that Kang wants $5m at least. So I’d offer his team $5 and him 2/$5 and yes I’d risk that on him. Wouldn’t kill any team to do it.
|
1:05 |
ROY: Wicked Weed Malice; BOY: Cigar City Hunahpu |
1:05 |
So, Kemp apparently has arthritis in both hips. Do the Padres re-work or nix the deal? |
1:05 |
: They could get more money from Dodgers.

Hiya, Eno. Any chance at ALL the Cubs are already baseball’s 4th-best team? I ask because that’s where their Bovada World Series odds are, behind only Dodgers, Nationals, and BoSox. |
1:05 |
: That seems… robust.
|
1:05 |
Carlos Carrasco – sell high or keep? |
1:05 |
: Keep. Arsenal of ace. Top Arsenal Score.
|
1:06 |
Got no 3b. should i try to trade for headley? what kinda guy seems fair? |
1:06 |
: Shouldn’t cost you much. I was trying to get him with J Parker and J Sanchez together but didn’t get there. So a little better than that.
|
1:06 |
Barleywine sucks |
1:06 |
: I used to agree with you, but now I’ve had a few I’ve liked.
|
1:07 |
why does everyone seem scared of scherzer |
1:07 |
: I guess it goes back to the injury concerns that were hung on him early in his career. Or mechanical things they see.
|
1:07 |
re: padres just pitching to contact with no catcher. is there anything stopping a team from not using a catcher and adding an additional infielder or something? i mean, is there a reason you NEED someone catching the ball? |
1:07 |
: Uh passed balls?
|
1:07 |
If barleywine was dessert would you still pair it with DIPA |
1:08 |
: Uh I think that would be a quick way to end up on the floor.
|
1:08 |
Does anyone else pronounce DIPA like a New Yorker saying “diaper” |
1:08 |
: yes.
|
1:08 |
do teams have a PR interest in building funky shaped ballparks? people love fenway not just because it is old but because it leads to unique baseball plays. the houston hill is interesting in this way as well. should teams do this more or do players just totally hate it? |
1:08 |
: Want to make it a ‘destination’ so yes. I mean look at that thing in Houston. It’s ridiculous. I’m sure players hate that one.
|
1:08 |
: (I’ll have to ask them, great idea for a piece)
|
1:09 |
Should I keep Joey Gallo or Joc Pederson in my keeper league? |
1:10 |
: Pederson
|
1:10 |
Are you a philosophical parent? |
1:10 |
: Eh I mean I talk to the two-year-old about ideas and he’s getting some of them, but I try not to be too in my head. Pay attention to the dude. Run around with him. Try not to be too harsh.
|
1:10 |
What exactly is “mouthfeel”? Viscosity + carbonation + temperature consumed + richness of taste? |
1:11 |
: Yeah with a little bit of a nod to how long (which I think can be accomplished by putting things in and out of the boil and creating first, second, third tastes) and how it finishes (tart or oily).
|
1:11 |
1000 words on Gavin Floyd. Rotographs FTW! |
1:11 |
: We are here to talk about every player all the way until the final period.
|
1:11 |
Regarding comment from Stonepie, please tell him that HR is NEVER your friend. They are there to serve the legal needs of the company, not the employee. That is all. : -) |
1:12 |
: Listen, I hear you guys. But when the boss sucks, you’re up a creek without a paddle. When I was at Wadsworth, I kissed ass, got out from under that boss, and left a wicked exit interview with HR.
|
1:12 |
Growing up, did you ever wish you had a more “normal” given name? Or did you think it was cool that you had a unique name instead of being one of 10 guys named “Matt?” |
1:13 |
: I wanted to be a Mark for a while yes. When I started talking to girls I was very happy with my name. (Kama from the kama sutra is my middle name.)
|
1:13 |
I’ve asked this before – but with the move to Miami would you change your answer: Keeping Trout (1 year) and E5 (1 year). Prefer your 3rd keeper to be Rendon (3 yrs in 19th rd) or Deeeeee (3 yrs in 23rd rd)? |
1:13 |
: So much Rendon.
|
1:13 |
does Harper leave the Nats? |
1:13 |
: At 26 as a free agent? Could see it. They will know him better than anyone.
|
1:13 |
How far have you road tripped for beer? Thinking of driving down to the Chicago area from Milwaukee to grab some beers that never make it up to us. |
1:14 |
: On the road? Sonoma for Pliny the Younger and Santa Barbara for Firestone Walker if you don’t count my Minnesota/Chicago trip last year.
|
1:14 |
Had Bell’s Black Note the other day. It tasted like barrel-aged expedition. For all the buzz, I kind of expected more. |
1:14 |
You buying the Steamer 20/20 projection for Souza? Worth a late round flyer or will his stock be too high by draft time? |
1:15 |
: The stolen bases seem aggressive, and I’m not sure why Steamer has him with a 21% strikeout rate given his minor league rates.
|
1:15 |
farm to face is a great beer name |
1:15 |
: yes.
|
1:15 |
Who’s the better dynasty keeper at this point Profar or Addison Russell? |
1:15 |
: You know what I’ll take Russell. It’s going in the wrong direction (away from the big leagues) but I like the health.
|
1:15 |
where can i get data for Hummusgraphs? |
1:15 |
: Yelp?
|
1:16 |
Why do people think there is any advantage to paying salary sooner rather than later? Newsflash: if you could afford it now, you can also afford it in five years — and in the meantime you could accrue interest/get ROI on that amount of money, and also who knows what happens in the future maybe you don’t end up paying that off |
1:17 |
: I said that Jays could pay Asdrubal less now, more later, so that they could fit him into the budget now. Frontloaded? Haven’t heard a lot of love for that. Maybe the players push for it.
|
1:17 |
your favorite norwegian beer/brewery? |
1:17 |
: ToOl Nebuchadnezzar
|
1:17 |
Had 3F zwet.be soured porter and oof that was not good. |
1:17 |
: There’s also Tart of Darkness from The Bruery, so I’d say give it one more shot, and if you don’t like it, you don’t like the style.
|
1:18 |
How much extra money would SD have to ask for in order for the Dodgers to say no? LAD does not seem in a position to back out. Another … 30 million? |
1:18 |
: That makes Kemp a 5/45 guy. I think most teams would take Kemp at 5/45.
|
1:19 |
American Barleywines are substantially diff from UK Barleywines; the former are kinda gross imo but the latter are drinkable warming plum pudding what’s wrong with you ppl |
1:19 |
I think I’m still okay with the Mets front office, but my biggest problem is their failure to give any ,major consideration to the big international guys. Abreu, Puig, now Kang. It’s very frustrating. How do they feel Frank Fancisco is worth 2/12 but Kang isn’t worth anything??? |
1:19 |
: I don’t think Kang counts in that sentence. But yeah the last bit, that’s what I’m talking about.
|
1:19 |
Eno! Did you know that (averaging Fangraphs & B-Ref numbers) Chris Sale has a higher career WAR per 200 IP than Clayton Kershaw, and a higher K rate, and a lower BB rate? Trivia! |
1:19 |
just put a piece of plywood back there np who needs a catcher |
1:19 |
It seems like the funkier you made your ballpark, the more of a home field advantage you’d generate since your players would have much more experience dealing with the park’s idiosyncracies. |
1:20 |
: I guess but I couldn’t find a home field advantage to Oakland’s big foul ground…
|
1:20 |
Favorite ballpark HR celebration item? Mine goes to the NYM apple for nostalgia reasons; prob would pick MIA if unbiased. |
1:20 |
: I like the Apple and I hate the Marlins thing but I’ll give it to the Marlins thing because wow are they freaking serious.
|
1:21 |
The Cleveland ownership comes to you and says that they lost a bet and now you get to name their team. What do you say? |
1:21 |
: Spiders. Have a David Bowie night.
|
1:21 |
Ok not all barleywine sucks had 1 that was aged in rum barrels thats was mad dec, i accidentally ended up at barleywine festival |
1:21 |
: Yeah Old Conundrum is basically a wood-aged barleywine and I thought it was great.
|
1:22 |
“I think can be accomplished by putting things in and out of the boil and creating first, second, third tastes” I never knew this! where did you learn that? |
1:22 |
: A lot of brewery tours. Dry hopping also creates the aroma, that’s the last hops they put in.
|
1:22 |
On arsenal score – doesn’t quality of contact have to be part of it? Don’t like the sOPS+ outcome-based stuff but is it the best we have without hitFX? |
1:22 |
: I really really really don’t want to put outcomes in there. I know I’m not keeping sequencing out of this, but I don’t want BABIP noise in there.
|
1:23 |
Just catching up but it dawns on me that if you stopped giving the beer to the baby you wouldn’t need to burp it so much. Worked for me at least. (kidding of course, don’t call CPS) |
1:23 |
Ever had any Parish Ales? If you’re ever, for some godforsaken reason, in Louisiana, you should try them. |
1:23 |
where can I get data for ROBOTGRAPHS |
1:23 |
just kidding DESTROY |
1:23 |
: good lude
|
1:23 |
I really enjoyed today’s “Biggest Remaining Lineup Needs” but I can’t help but feel like the Reds are screwed in LF. Not many options left |
1:23 |
: Yeah that one was just a big fat WOOF. Might be time for the tear down they referenced.
|
1:24 |
Also: for you sour fans out there, the brewery to watch for 2015 is Funk Factory Guezeria. Like De Garde/Side Project in 2014, they are going to be a big deal. Levi’s a very talented man. |
1:24 |
Do you get your homebrew stuff from MoreBeer! in Los Altos? The place has the unmistakeable grime of a garage sale (is this a thing in all homebrew stores?) but the guys there seem to know their stuff. |
1:24 |
: Yes!
|
1:24 |
The Dodgers’ salary stomach is bottomless |
1:24 |
a bottomless stomach meets bottomless nachos |
1:24 |
What would happen if they went to chichis |
1:24 |
i can’t even |
1:25 |
: Oh there was a question above.. yes I think Cubs should get Medlen in particular. 2/10. boom.
|
1:25 |
: And I can’t believe the Dodgers don’t have limitations or they’d have Lester.
|
1:25 |
is there a way to sort beergraphs leaderboards by state rather than region? say, WI? |
1:25 | : click the state on the beer |
1:26 |
For your pitch arsenal scores, have you thought about weighting them based on percentage they throw the pitch? It nice if a pitcher has a really good change but doesn’t matter too much if they only throw is 2 or 3 times a start |
1:26 |
: yes. This very much so. I’m also thinking about dividing by number of pitches so that we don’t *just* reward guys with five pitches. less sure about that one though. Weighting the pitches for volume makes a ton of sense.
|
1:27 |
Joey Votto bums me out |
1:27 |
Verifying that all homebrew stores have the unmistakeable grim of a garage sale, and that the guys always know their stuff. |
1:28 |
So you’ll drive to Santa Rosa and Paso Robles, but you still haven’t driven to Capitola for SARA? Beginning to doubt the legitimacy of your role with beergraphs. |
1:29 |
http://www.beergraphs.com/l… and we love them. It’s just… I don’t have family there. That’s how I sneak my beers.
: I really really really want to go to Sante Adairius |
1:29 |
I bought an entire box of clementines for $5, now I’m eating like ten a day so I can finish them before they go bad |
1:29 |
: It’s okay, they’re great.
|
1:29 |
oh my question: will I break out in hives |
1:30 |
: Please check back in.
|
1:30 |
Yoan Moncada or Tomas in a dynasty league? |
1:30 |
: Moncada even if further away.
|
1:30 |
Yeah, but would the DODGERS offer Kemp at 5/45 is kinda what I meant |
1:30 |
: To get Grandal, who might be a better use of the roster spot? I think so, but we’ll see.
|
1:31 |
Any chance Rotographs provides a value calculator app kind of thing this season? Or Fangraphs +? |
1:31 |
: We working on it, and I don’t think we’ll make you pay for it. We’re FanGraphs! FG+ is an annual.
|
1:32 |
Possibly trading my Harvey for his J Fernandez in dynasty, k/9. Thoughts? |
1:32 |
: You buy a season of value for some possible downgrade in ceiling? I think it’s okay.
|
1:33 |
if you were waiting tables could you remember a huge and complicated order wo a notepad |
1:33 |
: no. my computer is my brain.
|
1:33 |
is there any chance Toritani can be better than Dtravis or Isturis at 2b? |
1:33 |
: I think adding him to the mix is a good idea.
|
1:33 |
Chris Taylor vs Danny Santana vs Jose Ramirez vs Luis Sardinas. I can’t tell them apart. |
1:34 |
: I’m throwing darts but I’ll take Taylor out of that scrum for fantasy. Probably real life too.
|
1:34 |
Did you know the Mets drafted Brandon Nimmo one pick before Jose Fernandez in 2011? They could have had Harvey and Fernandez in the magical world I just invented where everything is perfect. |
1:34 |
: And the Rays coulda had Posey.
|
1:35 |
Can the Angels please trade Josh Hamilton back to the Rangers? That has to be the most comical rumor of the offseason. |
1:35 |
: oh man that would be fun.
|
1:35 |
Pick the better deal for 3years, 15 to 20M — Medlen or Beachy? |
1:36 |
: I think I’ll take Medlen. Beachy has the more balanced arsenal and is younger, but his TJ never took. I think that’s more concerning that having TJ, pitching for a while, and having it agian.
|
1:36 |
In a world where Closers/Relievers get eight figure salaries, is 20-25M for a guy like Scherzer or Lester REALLY all that insane? |
1:37 |
: No but maybe the years are.
|
1:37 |
Dynasty league, where would you put DeGrom vs untested but supposedly higher potential fellows like Taijuan Walker, Aaron Sanchez or Andrew Heaney? |
1:37 |
: Above em all.
|
1:37 |
we are becoming as was foretold: one exobrain, a networked intelligence held by none and all simultaneously |
1:37 |
: The singularity.
|
1:37 |
As a mets fan, does it depress you as well seeing seemingly every other mediocre team actively try to improve their roster (pads, cubs, marlins, astros, white sox), regardless on how they are doing it, and the Mets come to you and say “Here is Cuddyer. Now buy tickets” |
1:39 |
: Yeah a little. Especially since signing Cuddyer cost them a pick and they could have used that opportunity to sign another. I still don’t really know who to ‘blame.’ But I’m starting to believe it’s a little of both. I mean they are in a position to trade something like Montero and/or Syndergaard, and they could really nice pieces for that. If they pulled the trigger.
|
1:39 |
or the multiplicity; both at once |
1:39 |
distributed omniaccessible knowledge? |
1:39 |
: Love it. Mostly because I think using that knowledge correctly is more important than just having it and having the ability to access it.
|
1:39 |
When does the Angels terrible farm system catch up to them? |
1:40 |
: Has to at some point.
|
1:40 |
Ideal target if you were to trade Thor/Montero or some combo? |
1:40 |
: I think they should have gotten into Myers deal. They need controllable young offensive talent, mostly in outfield or at short. I don’t think Tulo counts. Don’t know if there’s any of that still on the board.
|
1:41 |
do you think the Rangers’ lack of aggressiveness this off season is a sign that they might be focusing on 2016? |
1:41 |
: What’s filtering through by rumor and comment is that perhaps they like their young players more than other teams like them. They might not like the free agents left (who does really) and so they’re just going to let their guys play.
|
1:41 |
Eno is a mets fan? |
1:42 |
: Moved to New York in 2002 and was NOT going to be a Yankee fan.
|
1:42 |
: Okay guys I’m on baby duty, gotta go! If I don’t see you before the new year, have a happy new year, drink responsibly or just put the car keys away. Love and kisses!
|
1:43 |
ciao eno! |
With a phone full of pictures of pitchers' fingers, strange beers, and his two toddler sons, Eno Sarris can be found at the ballpark or a brewery most days. Read him here, writing about the A's or Giants at The Athletic, or about beer at October. Follow him on Twitter @enosarris if you can handle the sandwiches and inanity.
Please change back to cover it live…… I can’t read the chat now that it isn’t “live” ……sad
