What kind of fantasy value does Alex Rios have next season? Does he essentially ruin my dreams of Jarrod Dyson having significant value?

Eno Sarris: Dyson might be a little overexposed in everyday duty, and Rios is a righty, so there’s still a chance that Dyson gets the big part of a platoon with Rios if he’s not good (if he does what he did last year). But if Rios starts most of the year, I’d put him down for .275/10/20 and that’s fifth outfielder work, it’s not terrible.

Eno Sarris: Closer to fine by me than most. Was Trea Turner a top-ten prospect? If not, he still was a coin flip. I think Myers is better than a coin flip to be better than he was, and even if he wasn’t, he’s a productive major leaguer. We’ll see if Kemp is healthy.

Eno Sarris: I like saison, stout, double IPA to finish. That should progress in ABV and bitterness and give them a good range. Saison with salad, that’s bright and airy and peppery. Stout with potatoes/meat. IPA before dessert.

Eno Sarris: No real idea. I guess it’s the idea that baseball didn’t want teams trading draft picks. If you let them trade right after drafted, you could essentially trade draft picks.

Eno Sarris: And I guess the idea *there* was that bad teams would get worse so baseball was keeping them from trading their picks to save themselves.

Eno Sarris: When we got in there I was the only one that didn’t get a seat and Billy Beane had been looking at me so I felt like a little rookie. Then I asked him about moving Lawrie to second and projections, and he and I locked eyes and talked about our projection systems and what Semien was projected for and how he was going to get to two wins with a bad slash line and how the team was only four or five games back of the Angels and how they weren’t done and then he turned to the writers and told them all that they should read fangraphs and how Cameron was in his head and we’ve got a bug in their office and I was like, that’s nice but please stop telling them that because I have to work with these people. It was crickets when we left the room.

Please explain the Mets. They have solid SP, but adding Cuddyer to Murphy, Wright, Granderson, Duda, and d’Arnaud only makes them slightly better. Juan Lagares is not a leadoff hitter. Do you see them taking a flyer on Everth Cabrera to fill the SS/leadoff hitter need?

Eno Sarris: They keep talking about Cabrera’s off-field stuff, so I doubt it. I’m souring a bit on the front office. I do think the Reyes non-trade and the Wright extension smell terribly of Wilpon, so I don’t necessarily blame that on them. And their deals have been short. But they didn’t draft these pitchers and they need to hit on something, or be a little more aggressive I think.

Eno Sarris: Souza doesn’t have the defensive value either. I did see that the exit speed of Souza’s bat led the AFL a couple years back, so maybe there’s some ability to hit the ball hard that will survive the strikeouts. Otherwise, you’d think they would have held on to Turner.

Eno Sarris: HR is your friend. Find a way to document the things he’s doing wrong. At some point, put your own job on the line and go to HR with complaints. It may turn into an exit interview, but they will listen to what you have to say, particularly if you can show your work.

It would appear that the mainstream projection systems are all the same. Do you blend or stick with Steamer or ZiPS?

Eno Sarris: I use both to rein in my optimism, but I’ll pick the nicer one of the two if I am optimistic. Maybe I’ll even add a few ticks, or a dollar of value, past the top projection. But I’m not going to pay for a player at $30 if Steamer says he’s worth $20.

Eno Sarris: I’d want a lot. Like Betts/Syndergaard/x where x is a replacement SP for this year that I like. x could equal someone like Homer Bailey, perhaps. You give them an ace, and for your step back you get two long-term assets. If you can get a top-ten prospect like Bryant, plus the replacement SP, that’s okay, maybe better. I do like quantity if it’s good quantity.

Eno Sarris: We go through two methods here. Google Zimmerman and Standard Points Gained for one approach, and then Zach Sanders and fVARz for the other (which takes z-scores in each stat and sums them for value).

It seems to me that the Nats plan is to go all-in on 2015, take a bit of a step back in 2016 and then be back to a very high level in 2017 when you’d expect guys like Turner and Giolito to be around. And they could still win mid-80s or if things break right 90 games in 2016 and make the postseason.

For your pitch arsenal scores, have you thought about weighting them based on percentage they throw the pitch? It nice if a pitcher has a really good change but doesn’t matter too much if they only throw is 2 or 3 times a start

Eno Sarris: yes. This very much so. I’m also thinking about dividing by number of pitches so that we don’t *just* reward guys with five pitches. less sure about that one though. Weighting the pitches for volume makes a ton of sense.
