Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 12/18/24

Eno Sarris: See you soon! In the mantime, it’s about the music, not the words.

I think the most important thing from all this Kemp physical drama is learning that his agent is MFing JUNIOR SPIVEY!

12:01
Eno Sarris: A world championship was not enough for the man. A world-class nickname was not enough for him. Rhyming with spidey was not enough for him.

12:01
Comment From Bill
Wait I had a question. Are the Cubbies done this off season?

12:02
Eno Sarris: I’ve got a piece going up today about biggest needs, and their corner outfield situation was on it. I think it’ll get filled with Kris Bryant.

12:02
Comment From Ned Yost
What kind of fantasy value does Alex Rios have next season? Does he essentially ruin my dreams of Jarrod Dyson having significant value?

12:03
Eno Sarris: Dyson might be a little overexposed in everyday duty, and Rios is a righty, so there’s still a chance that Dyson gets the big part of a platoon with Rios if he’s not good (if he does what he did last year). But if Rios starts most of the year, I’d put him down for .275/10/20 and that’s fifth outfielder work, it’s not terrible.

12:03
Comment From Bill
If Bryant fills the outfield need, who takes the hot corner?

12:04
Eno Sarris: They’ve got plenty of infield pieces.

12:04
Comment From Beantown
Seems like the Red Sox have set up their rotation 2 – 5. Chances they say screw it and throw $200 mill at Scherzer?

12:04
Eno Sarris: I think it’s more likely the Giants do that with the Pablo money.

12:04
Eno Sarris: I just like writing Pablo money.

12:04
Comment From Harry Porter and the Voldemalts
Eno, whats your favorite hop varieties? Imma huge fan of sorachi ace

12:04
Eno Sarris: Love that one, but mosaic and that fruit (or nelson) might beat it for me.

12:04
Comment From Pale Hose
I imagine Eno taking interlude breaks in normal conversation and/or inopportune times. It causes 95% of the fights with the mrs.

12:05
Eno Sarris: Not far off. I often wander off with random interjections with no context and she yells CONTEXT

12:05
Comment From David
Danny Espinosa’s 121 wRC+ is against lefties, not righties. He’s on the short side of the platoon. From your piece that just got posted.

12:05
Eno Sarris: Fixed!

12:06
Comment From Snarfle
On a scale of “fine by me” to “they’ve lost their minds” where do you put the Padres?

12:07
Eno Sarris: Closer to fine by me than most. Was Trea Turner a top-ten prospect? If not, he still was a coin flip. I think Myers is better than a coin flip to be better than he was, and even if he wasn’t, he’s a productive major leaguer. We’ll see if Kemp is healthy.

12:07
Comment From andy
How do I apply that cameron article on elite prospect value to dynasty?

12:07
Eno Sarris: If your prospect is not top 20, trade him without compunction.

What do you think of the Braves offseason thus far? It all seems like smart rebuilding with the exception of the bizarre Markakis signing.

12:08
Eno Sarris: Just trying to stay in it in case their kids come quickly or the ball bounces Chris Johnson’s way, I guess. The A’s are ‘rebuilding’ and signed Butler.

12:08
Comment From Offensively Challenged
In terms of an AL-only league, is Kole Calhoun a top-20 OF in 2015?

12:08
Eno Sarris: Yes.

12:08
Comment From jono
Hosting Christmas dinner (prime rib) in northeast. Need some good pairings/offerings. what’s good progression to follow in the way of styles?

12:09
Eno Sarris: I like saison, stout, double IPA to finish. That should progress in ABV and bitterness and give them a good range. Saison with salad, that’s bright and airy and peppery. Stout with potatoes/meat. IPA before dessert.

12:10
Eno Sarris: Goddammit I thought I pressed that button. Hold on.

12:11
Eno Sarris: Huh I think I had it right. Let me know if it’s wrong now.

12:11
Comment From floop
why is there a restriction on trading drafted players, anyway?

12:11
Eno Sarris: No real idea. I guess it’s the idea that baseball didn’t want teams trading draft picks. If you let them trade right after drafted, you could essentially trade draft picks.

12:12
Eno Sarris: And I guess the idea *there* was that bad teams would get worse so baseball was keeping them from trading their picks to save themselves.

12:12
Comment From andy
I’m scared that Votto will continue to be injured until he retires.

12:12
Eno Sarris: Could still be one injury that’s working it’s way out. I’m not hanging the prone label on him quite yet.

12:12
Comment From David
How does Mike Rizzo keep doing it? Year after year it seems he pulls of these trades. Matt Capps for Wilson Ramos. Michael Morse for AJ Cole (their #2 pitching prospect), Blake Treinen and Ian Krol. Lombo, Robbie Ray and Krol for Doug Fister. Is he the best trader in the game right now?

12:12
Eno Sarris: So far so good!

12:12
Comment From Plinydust
Just traded for some Gandhi Bot, can’t wait to try it. Ever have it?

12:12
Eno Sarris: No and I want.

12:13
Comment From Pale Hose
Can you tell us awkward A’s suite stories?

12:15
Eno Sarris: When we got in there I was the only one that didn’t get a seat and Billy Beane had been looking at me so I felt like a little rookie. Then I asked him about moving Lawrie to second and projections, and he and I locked eyes and talked about our projection systems and what Semien was projected for and how he was going to get to two wins with a bad slash line and how the team was only four or five games back of the Angels and how they weren’t done and then he turned to the writers and told them all that they should read fangraphs and how Cameron was in his head and we’ve got a bug in their office and I was like, that’s nice but please stop telling them that because I have to work with these people. It was crickets when we left the room.

12:15
Comment From Reddickulous

Comment From Tulo
What is the likelihood that I get traded this offseason? Seems like the buzz has died down recently

12:15
Eno Sarris: I’m guessing no.

12:16
Eno Sarris: It’s a bit of the Hamels problem. I say, my player is awesome. You say, he’s expensive too!

12:16
Comment From Miketron
Will this be the last Eno chat of the year? If so got any album or beer of the year picks?

12:18
Eno Sarris: I guess it might be! The beer I remember most about this year is not new. But pseudo Sue was so so so so so good. I also liked Cascade Sang Royal, a sour that tastes a lot like Consecration with a bit more jam. I’ll need to run the BeerGraphs rookie of the year query to see which new beer gets the love.

12:19
Eno Sarris: (I also had Societe The Pupil and Prairie Bomb for the first time this year, I remember now.)

12:19
Comment From mtsw
Which NL position player would most increase in value by being traded to an AL team and being allowed to DH?

12:20
Eno Sarris: Haha might be Duda. You could say Ryan Howard but that might not save him anyway.

12:20
Comment From andy
what level of bat I should expect in return for Samardzija (dynasty)? Is asking for K Bryant ridiculous?

12:21
Eno Sarris: That seems like you’re aiming a bit high. You might be able to get a top ten *pitching* prospect with him though.

12:21
Comment From L. Scott
Please explain the Mets. They have solid SP, but adding Cuddyer to Murphy, Wright, Granderson, Duda, and d’Arnaud only makes them slightly better. Juan Lagares is not a leadoff hitter. Do you see them taking a flyer on Everth Cabrera to fill the SS/leadoff hitter need?

12:22
Eno Sarris: They keep talking about Cabrera’s off-field stuff, so I doubt it. I’m souring a bit on the front office. I do think the Reyes non-trade and the Wright extension smell terribly of Wilpon, so I don’t necessarily blame that on them. And their deals have been short. But they didn’t draft these pitchers and they need to hit on something, or be a little more aggressive I think.

12:23
Comment From Kris
We really gonna compare Souza to Zobrist with his ridiculous K rate? The helium on him is absurd

12:23
Eno Sarris: Souza doesn’t have the defensive value either. I did see that the exit speed of Souza’s bat led the AFL a couple years back, so maybe there’s some ability to hit the ball hard that will survive the strikeouts. Otherwise, you’d think they would have held on to Turner.

12:24
Comment From Walt
have you had any Cincinnati beer? Rhiengeist and Madtree both have some well regarded offerings

12:24
Eno Sarris: No I want to try more. There’s great beer there.

12:24
Comment From Rated Rookie
Where do you stand on WIl Myers’s ceiling, more Delmon Young or more Jay Bruce?

12:24
Eno Sarris: Jay Bruce for me. I think he can play okay defense and I don’t think he’s done improving on offense.

12:24
Comment From jocephus
will you be taking cold showers in cuba soon?

12:24
Eno Sarris: I really do want to go.

The Indians, White Sox, Tigers, and Royals have made interesting moves. Who is the favorite to finish 3rd and 4th in the AL Central?

12:25
Eno Sarris: I’ll take the Indians to push the Tigers the most. I like them.

12:25
Comment From Pale Hose
Have you/Rotographs ever considered putting out an annual similar to the Forecaster?

12:25
Eno Sarris: We have FG+. We may print it some day.

Comment From stonepie
best way to try and change a boss whos lazy and stubborn?

12:26
Eno Sarris: HR is your friend. Find a way to document the things he’s doing wrong. At some point, put your own job on the line and go to HR with complaints. It may turn into an exit interview, but they will listen to what you have to say, particularly if you can show your work.

12:26
Comment From Bill
It would appear that the mainstream projection systems are all the same. Do you blend or stick with Steamer or ZiPS?

12:27
Eno Sarris: I use both to rein in my optimism, but I’ll pick the nicer one of the two if I am optimistic. Maybe I’ll even add a few ticks, or a dollar of value, past the top projection. But I’m not going to pay for a player at $30 if Steamer says he’s worth $20.

12:27
Comment From Reddickulous
Fabricate a guess for me, Eno: What year do the A’s make the ALCS, and what year do they have a new stadium?

12:27
Eno Sarris: 2017, 2020

12:28
Comment From Matt
From a timing standpoint, is it too early for the Cubs to consider moving one of their young infielder (i.e Baez) for a young, cost-controlled, high- upside young SP?

12:28
Eno Sarris: Yes. They need to get more information on who’s going to play where and if Edwards can start and what things look like with Lester at the top of the rotation.

12:28
Comment From Kris
you did, mooking needs to refresh

12:28
Eno Sarris: REFRESH!

12:28
Comment From pair-a-dice
would you trade Sale in dynasty? What would you want?

12:31
Eno Sarris: I’d want a lot. Like Betts/Syndergaard/x where x is a replacement SP for this year that I like. x could equal someone like Homer Bailey, perhaps. You give them an ace, and for your step back you get two long-term assets. If you can get a top-ten prospect like Bryant, plus the replacement SP, that’s okay, maybe better. I do like quantity if it’s good quantity.

12:32
Comment From misterjohnny
So what do the Padres do with their 24 (often injured) outfielders? They can’t DFA them like the Dodgers, can they?

12:34
Comment From Alex
Eno my man! I’ve offered some Bryant, Alex Wood and Pompey (mine) for Baez, Mookie, Drew Hutchison, and TJ House. Am I crazy, or is that a fair deal for both sides?

12:34
Eno Sarris: Yeah I don’t mind it. I think I like the Bryant side.

12:35
Comment From mervthroneberry
Who is Karns competition for the #5 TB SP spot, besides Moore? I like him, but I’m just Merv so…

12:35
Eno Sarris: It’s Moore so I’ll call Karns SP6, but super relevant in deeper than 12.

12:35
Comment From Kelder
Would you keep Odor over Tanaka or Carrasco?

12:36
Eno Sarris: If they don’t trade for a right fielder using an infield piece, I think they’ll try Odor in the outfield. I’m smelling a full season out of him next year either way, and something like .260/.300/.410 with 15/15+ type work. I’d be shopping the pitchers.

12:36
Comment From Stephen
Given your appreciation for beer, have you ever tried brewing it yourself?

12:36

Comment From Pucketts bucket
Can Danny Santana put up decent enough numbers to last the year as the Twin’s SS?

12:38
Eno Sarris: No and yes. In that, I think major regression is coming, but yes I think he’ll stick.

12:38
Comment From Kelder
What do you think we should do in a keeper with Tanaka and Garret Richards? Keep Gausman and Gio over those two?

12:39
Eno Sarris: No. Well Richards was a knee so even if he’s not ready for the season I’m more hopeful. Tanaka vs Gio… Probably still take Tanaka, but that’s worth thinking about.

12:39
Comment From Stephen
Dude, trying to type and read your chat with my pupils dialated is wierd. Its like i cant see, but i can, you know?

Comment From Art Vandelay
In your hypothetical Plouffe to the Giants scenario, what kind of return would he get? a low level prospect?

12:41
Eno Sarris: Can’t imagine he’d be super expensive, right? If Crick doesn’t get any better, his upside might be enough but he wouldn’t actually count as a high-level prospect. If he gets better, maybe a couple other smaller pieces?

12:41
Comment From Harry Porter and the Voldemalts

12:41
Eno Sarris: Can’t wait to see what happens with that.

Beer of the year is Grapefruit Sculpin for me. Had Sang Royal on Monday and loved it. Album of the year for me is Liars-Mess. In case anyone is wondering and I know that no one is.

12:41
Eno Sarris: Grapefruit Sculpin is like a shandy to me. I liked it but did not love.

12:41
Comment From Art Vandelay

Thoughts on Yelich for 2015? Batting 2nd?

12:42

12:42
Comment From Popeye Zimmer
Is Allan Craig done?

12:43
Eno Sarris: I’ll put him on a bench, I’m holding in a 20-team 28-keeper, this might be damning with faint praise.

12:43
Comment From Snarfle
That Beane story is what I want press conferences to be always.

12:43

So who has the inside track at the Jays closer role? Can they be serious about going with an internal candidate? If so, who?

12:44
Eno Sarris: My bet is Norris gets the starting job and Sanchez is the closer. Otherwise, it’s Cecil. That’s who I’ve got.

12:45
Comment From Paul
So next Padre trades: find sucker AL team to take Quentin. Package Wisler and Hedges for Beltre. Profit.

12:45
Eno Sarris: I think they were betting on Hedges as the replacement.

12:46
Comment From Stephen
Do you see the new trend amongst mlb teams as simply being in contention for the second wildcard, and not necessarily being above the rest?

12:46
Eno Sarris: Yes, everyone’s diving for the middle.

12:46
Comment From Beane
Re: Lawrie. How much stock do you put into his comments about the turf causing the injuries? Could that scrappy Oakland team be a perfect fit for him? Chances at 20/20?

12:46
Eno Sarris: I’m doing a cautious buy where I can. I’m giving him one last chance because he’s attainable.

What the hell is going on in SD? I know about picking up overrated bats but first they deal away Grandal, so I figure it’s Rivera’s job now. Then they deal away Rivera!?!?!? Are they just planning on pitching to contact so that no one has to catch the ball?

12:47
Eno Sarris: Hedges is a great defender, framer in my mind. They have Rivera, and he’s way younger.

12:47
Comment From Rated Rookie
Does the Gavin Floyd signing dim your forecast for Danny Salazar any?

12:48
Eno Sarris: Now it’s Salazar competing with House and House was on all my sleeper lists. So it dims House a bit more for me, just because of stuff. But the SP6 there will be relevant.

12:48
Comment From Ryan
What do you think happens with Luis Valbuena? Judging by his numbers the last 3 seasons, it looks like he could be a consistent 3 win player if given a full time job, but he would seem to be the odd man out in Chicago’s future (and maybe current) plans.

12:48
Eno Sarris: Platoon issues will keep him in a platoon. Perhaps with La Stella in a weird way (not with La Stella at third).

I actually forgot about the Reyes non-trade. Wow. If I remember correctly he was injured around the deadline, but considering the lack of effort they made to sign him that is a pretty huge blunder.

12:50
Eno Sarris: I don’t think it was a serious injury, and they could have traded him for something for sure. But ownership wanted that batting title and some butts in the seats.

12:50

12:51
Eno Sarris: No, not normally, but how else you going to deal with a bad boss? I don’t think the boss’s boss really wants to hear from you.

12:51
Comment From Scott
How do you determine dollar values based on projections?(In fantasy)

12:51
Eno Sarris: We go through two methods here. Google Zimmerman and Standard Points Gained for one approach, and then Zach Sanders and fVARz for the other (which takes z-scores in each stat and sums them for value).

12:51

Are moated, guarded “Legends Suite” style sections that segregate the richest fans and best seats from the rest of the stadium offensively undemocratic and contrary to the spirit of America and therefore baseball? Talk me off the ledge on this.

Cubs moving Ruggiano almost has to mean they’re looking for an OF, right? Can we expect they’ll go after someone legit, or are they really going to rely on 4 rookies once Bryant comes up (and field a tepid LF until then)

Eno Sarris: I doubt they sign Aoki or get Upton, so I think it will be internal. Coghlan into Bryant.

carlos martinez is 2nd on your arsenal list. shouldn’t he be starting then?

12:57
Comment From David
It seems to me that the Nats plan is to go all-in on 2015, take a bit of a step back in 2016 and then be back to a very high level in 2017 when you’d expect guys like Turner and Giolito to be around. And they could still win mid-80s or if things break right 90 games in 2016 and make the postseason.

12:57
Eno Sarris: I really like what Rizzo has done. I thought he might be trading away the future, but he’s kept an eye on it.

Is Pompey the Blue Jays opening day CF? How much leash does he have, and what does a full season from him look like? 240/310/390 with something like 20-30 steals feel reasonable?

1:00
Eno Sarris: I’m going to say yes he gets in there. If it’s not him, they still need a platoon partner for (maybe both) Pillar and Saunders. yes because that’s Steamer plus power and I think he can do better than Steamer’s power.

1:00
Comment From klof
cubs need another top of rotation guy to really compete. hammel seems more like a #4 than a #3.

In a long term keeper league (keep forever) – who would you be looking for if you wanted to trade Betts. The hype is out and I have league mates in Boston.

1:01
Eno Sarris: If he’s an outfielder, I think his short-term upside is probably .290/15/30. You might be able to sell him higher than that.

Eno Sarris: I doubt that he can stay healthy.

Comment From Guest
you try the 2013 Almanac bourbon sour porter? i dug it, had it barrel aged beerfest called big wood in seattle

1:04
Eno Sarris: I’ve said before that the sour porter changed my life. It has the depth and mouthfeel of a porter and the tangy end of a sour. So so so so so great.

1:04
Comment From Bob Loblaw
How insultingly low can the Mets go on Kang (SS) before his club team rejects it? I can’t imagine he’d get anything like the Cuban players have been getting.

1:05
Eno Sarris: I just read that Kang wants $5m at least. So I’d offer his team $5 and him 2/$5 and yes I’d risk that on him. Wouldn’t kill any team to do it.

So, Kemp apparently has arthritis in both hips. Do the Padres re-work or nix the deal?

1:05

Hiya, Eno. Any chance at ALL the Cubs are already baseball’s 4th-best team? I ask because that’s where their Bovada World Series odds are, behind only Dodgers, Nationals, and BoSox.

If barleywine was dessert would you still pair it with DIPA

do teams have a PR interest in building funky shaped ballparks? people love fenway not just because it is old but because it leads to unique baseball plays. the houston hill is interesting in this way as well. should teams do this more or do players just totally hate it?

1:08
Eno Sarris: Want to make it a ‘destination’ so yes. I mean look at that thing in Houston. It’s ridiculous. I’m sure players hate that one.

What exactly is “mouthfeel”? Viscosity + carbonation + temperature consumed + richness of taste?

1:11

You buying the Steamer 20/20 projection for Souza? Worth a late round flyer or will his stock be too high by draft time?

Why do people think there is any advantage to paying salary sooner rather than later? Newsflash: if you could afford it now, you can also afford it in five years — and in the meantime you could accrue interest/get ROI on that amount of money, and also who knows what happens in the future maybe you don’t end up paying that off

1:17
Eno Sarris: I said that Jays could pay Asdrubal less now, more later, so that they could fit him into the budget now. Frontloaded? Haven’t heard a lot of love for that. Maybe the players push for it.

I think I’m still okay with the Mets front office, but my biggest problem is their failure to give any ,major consideration to the big international guys. Abreu, Puig, now Kang. It’s very frustrating. How do they feel Frank Fancisco is worth 2/12 but Kang isn’t worth anything???

It seems like the funkier you made your ballpark, the more of a home field advantage you’d generate since your players would have much more experience dealing with the park’s idiosyncracies.

On arsenal score – doesn’t quality of contact have to be part of it? Don’t like the sOPS+ outcome-based stuff but is it the best we have without hitFX?

For your pitch arsenal scores, have you thought about weighting them based on percentage they throw the pitch? It nice if a pitcher has a really good change but doesn’t matter too much if they only throw is 2 or 3 times a start

1:26
Eno Sarris: yes. This very much so. I’m also thinking about dividing by number of pitches so that we don’t *just* reward guys with five pitches. less sure about that one though. Weighting the pitches for volume makes a ton of sense.

Pick the better deal for 3years, 15 to 20M — Medlen or Beachy?

1:36

As a mets fan, does it depress you as well seeing seemingly every other mediocre team actively try to improve their roster (pads, cubs, marlins, astros, white sox), regardless on how they are doing it, and the Mets come to you and say “Here is Cuddyer. Now buy tickets”

1:39
Eno Sarris: Yeah a little. Especially since signing Cuddyer cost them a pick and they could have used that opportunity to sign another. I still don’t really know who to ‘blame.’ But I’m starting to believe it’s a little of both. I mean they are in a position to trade something like Montero and/or Syndergaard, and they could really nice pieces for that. If they pulled the trigger.

Ideal target if you were to trade Thor/Montero or some combo?

1:40
Eno Sarris: I think they should have gotten into Myers deal. They need controllable young offensive talent, mostly in outfield or at short. I don’t think Tulo counts. Don’t know if there’s any of that still on the board.

1:41
Comment From RyanW
do you think the Rangers’ lack of aggressiveness this off season is a sign that they might be focusing on 2016?

1:41
Eno Sarris: What’s filtering through by rumor and comment is that perhaps they like their young players more than other teams like them. They might not like the free agents left (who does really) and so they’re just going to let their guys play.
