Eno Sarris: Here at the top of the hour. WITH CHANGES
11:59 |
Comment From dudeDavid Bowie.
11:59 |
Eno Sarris: so instead of lyrics of the day, we’re going to do CLIP OF THE DAY because who knows lyrics anyway. and lest you mock my music taste, remember my mother named me after Brian Eno and my father met my mother because he was in Jamaica for The Grateful Dead playing at Sunsplash with Bob Marley, and I like so many different types of music that eventually I’ll like something you like.
That said, today’s CLIP is educational. As in, I never knew this guy sang!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCXhtfVc6oQ
11:59 |
Comment From juan pierres mustachewait is that the lyrics of the day? it’s david bowie, “Changes”. My question is A) did you cut your hair and B) did you keep all the cut-off hair to make a sweet fake beard for your child?
11:59 |
Eno Sarris: I couldn’t do it. Same style, just shorter.
11:59 |
Comment From FishI HATE CHANGE
11:59 |
Eno Sarris: Hopefully I was gentle.
12:00 |
Comment From San Dzymborskiwhy isnt EE a first rounder? that sexy K/BB rate, even the BABIP was below career avg. Can i take him 8-10? (eligible at 3rd)
12:00 |
Eno Sarris: I’ve panicked enough with Encarnacion available that I’m now fully behind this. He’s a first rounder for sure. probably right around 10. Dunno about steals and health is a bit of an issue.
12:01 |
Comment From GsonYou’ve become obsessed with American Idol..and J-lo is not bad on the eyes…
12:01 |
Eno Sarris: I actually *used* to watch that show, particularly in the early stages when it was hilariously awful but then I just felt bad.
12:01 |
Comment From johnEvan Roberts and Jon Heyman going off on how the mets should sign Drew AND Cruz. Can someone take away their microphones please. Morons.
12:02 |
Eno Sarris: I’d take Drew. That way, if Tejada works out, he’s an option at second, but the pressure is off. Nelson Cruz? good god.
12:02 |
Comment From Matt (Seattle)Hey Eno – as K rates rise, there are fewer balls in play, the value of defense (and positional adjustments) need to drop (even if just a very little bit), right?
12:02 |
Eno Sarris: Unless, like the Pirates, you emphasize pitches that put the ball in play, like the sinker.
12:02 |
Comment From humanIT’S ENO DAY!!!
12:02 |
Eno Sarris: Really? awesome. someone forgot to tell me or I’d have done something special.
12:03 |
Comment From Sean CChanges like Bowie or like Tupac?
12:03 |
Eno Sarris: Oh Tupac’s is the best.
12:03 |
Comment From RotoLandoThursday Chat with Eno Sarris: 40% Beer, 40% Baseball, 20% Claptrap, Flim-Flam and Hogwash
12:03 |
Eno Sarris: Just about have me sussed.
12:03 |
Comment From MattThoughts on Alex Cobb does he have top 20 potential?
12:03 |
Eno Sarris: I have no big doubts about Cobb in the short term. The curve and change are solid, and he has great control and command. Long-term, I do wonder what happens as the fastball velocity starts to slip.
12:03 |
Comment From BradI can keep Matt Harvey for an 8th rd pick. Is he worth keeping so I can have him for 2015 or should I let him go?
12:04 |
Eno Sarris: Oh. Yeah. I think so. I mean, we can learn from Luebke, but that’s something like a 10% chance. And 90% chance of Harvey in the eighth in 2015 is sessy.
12:04 |
Comment From ENOrmousC.J. Kron likely to come up this season, or only if he’s “raking” in AAA?
12:06 |
Eno Sarris: At the winter meetings, his manager seemed to think things needed to fall in line for Cron in order for him to play. So I’ll take him at his word. Obviously, Ibanez/whomever takes over for Pujols at first when he DHs is not the very best DH situation, though, so he’s got a shot. And I know prospecters are all about Cron’s flaws, but gotdang if he doesn’t look exactly like Trumbo statistically.
12:06 |
Comment From RaynI know most guys are generally conservative with rookies, and for good reason. But, if Taveras and Bogaerts were better than expected this year, what could they conceivably hit in 2014? Talking a Trout/Jose Fernandez best case scenario.
12:07 |
Eno Sarris: Taveras is *really* blocked, but I think he could .290/20/10 if something happened in the spring. XB is a lot closer, probably has the job. I think he’ll *probably* suffer from a 22-24% strikeout rate and hit .260, but if he pushed that down to 20% and had a little BABIP love, he really could hit .280+/25/15. At short.
12:07 |
Comment From MiketronAm I wrong in thinking Medlen will be a bit undervalued this year after he seemed over-hyped before last season?
12:08 |
Eno Sarris: He went a little higher than I thought in our mock but I do think he’s an okay pitcher, a fantasy 4 or so.
12:08 |
Comment From ENOrmousDynasty 2B: Schoop vs Alcantara vs La Stella vs other?… pts league, thanks Eno!
12:08 |
Eno Sarris: Schoop/La Stella because they are super close. Like they’ll get 300+ PA this year probably.
12:08 |
Comment From DCWhere would you most prefer to draft from in a 12-team snake? I have the first choice on draft position and I’m leaning toward taking 1 because Trout.
12:08 |
Comment From Wright StuffOver/Under 12 steals for Hunter Pence this year?
12:08 |
Eno Sarris: Under. I know he’s a freak, but there’s still too much decline in his SB stats before last year. Maybe 10.
12:09 |
Comment From MiketronHow do you feel about Kyle Seager and Matt Adams who seemed to be defeated by defensive shifting in the second half of last year? Can they adjust their approach?
12:09 |
Eno Sarris: I’d project both into .260 batting averages to be safe.
12:09 |
Comment From DonWhat is the realistic upside of Christian Yelich in a dynasty?
12:10 |
Eno Sarris: Watching that strikeout rate. I think maybe he doesn’t improve it a ton. .270/20/20 in a peak year? A little more power, less speed in a few other years.
12:10 |
Comment From RhendricksHey Eno! Who do you have this season only with emphasis on Ks and IP and both Wins and QS count: Kevin Gausman, Tyson Ross or Alex Wood?
12:11 |
Eno Sarris: I thought I answered this on twitter. My bad. Ks is all about Gausman. Upside is Gausman’s. Combo of upside and security is Wood. That leaves Ross with the smallest upside, even if he’s got the most secure role. I think I’d take Gausman, just because the Braves got those two old dudes behind Wood, and I love Gausman’s stuff, but Wood is a good pick too. Ross still no changeup, crazy bad mechanics.
12:11 |
Comment From DCCommish in our keeper league wants to change AVG to OBP this year. OBP is superior to AVG, obviously but I’m hesitant to make any changes. What are your thought on making changes to keeper league stats?
12:12 |
Eno Sarris: Usually in keeper leagues, the decision is for the *next* year, which in this case is 2015. In other words, you always want a draft between you and the rule change, so that you can adjust to what’s coming. I like OBP.
12:12 |
Comment From AlexWhat do I expect from Albert Pujols this year? Bounce back to where he was in 2012?
12:12 |
Eno Sarris: I think he might have a good year and hit .280 with 28-32 homers.
12:13 |
Comment From FishI have an opportunity to trade Choo and get Stanton in my dynasty. Stanton with the fish is kind of a 2 category guy (OBP league), but with Choo in leadoff it’s basically trading runs for dingers, right?
12:13 |
Eno Sarris: Choo will steal bases and has a more complete line and is an OBP monster, but you are getting ahead of the aging curve here, and buying power as power is down across baseball…
12:14 |
Comment From StevePeteWhat 3-4 relievers would you be heavily targeting in Ottoneu Points? Not including top tier closers that are probably being kept
12:15 |
Eno Sarris: Probably want setup guys on teams that don’t have great other options. Like Cody Allen. Maybe Santiago Casilla will be sneaky good. Farquhar should get saves or holds and Ks. Dingers suck, so maybe a guy in a pitcher’s park like Ryan Cook.
12:15 |
Comment From LilyAre you buying into the pre season uptick for Mauer since he is moving off of Catcher?? What about concussion?
12:15 |
Eno Sarris: I’ll buy into a nice Plate Appearance projection, yes.
12:15 |
Comment From TomWill MLB ever get rid of the unbalanced scheduled? Or at least re-align the leagues to get rid of the division and then top x teams go to playoffs?
12:16 |
Eno Sarris: I do see some sort of change coming. DH for everyone… I do think they like ‘rivalries’ and ‘divisions’ though. Brings butts to seats.
12:16 |
Comment From dgcoHow do you see the Cubs’ prospect glut shaking out? Do any of Baez, Bryant, Alcantara, Olt et al get much PT this season?
12:17 |
Eno Sarris: This season only? Baez has to be close, and Bryant can play if they give up on third base. If Castro sucks again, maybe they move him to second and bring up Baez. Olt should see some time before Bryant. If Olt is cromulent, maybe Bryant comes up in COF. Lots of moving parts. Baez is obviously closest.
12:17 |
Comment From TomPuig at the top of the order…increases or decreases fantasy value? What round should he be targeted in?
12:18 |
Eno Sarris: If it makes him run more, increases. I’ll take SBs over RBIs. I like him in the third. Second seems a bit risky because of the K% and batting average.
12:18 |
Comment From GuestIs Cespedes worth a keep over bogaerts, sal perez, or alex cobb?
12:18 |
Eno Sarris: No I don’t think so. Good projection for him is about .265/20/10 which is useful, but not that outstanding in the OF.
12:18 |
Comment From humanany reason to believe andrelton simmons takes it to another level with the bat this year?
12:19 |
Eno Sarris: His only real problem is that he’s not a good basestealer and he hits the ball straight up in the air too much. If he can get rid of that 17% infield fly rate, he could hit .300, he has enough power and contact. But IFFB% is actually correlated about as well year-to-year as wOBA, so it would take a semi-fundamental change. I’d feel better going by the projections on our site, maybe taking him a round earlier if you think he can level the swing.
12:20 |
Comment From LilyI wanna believe that this is the official Hosmer breakout year?? Any reservations?
12:20 |
Eno Sarris: Too many ground balls to see a big power surge.
12:20 |
Comment From SRAre the Pirates a playoff team without making anymore free agent moves?
12:21 |
Eno Sarris: So far they lost one of their better pitchers and didn’t really improve their offense. Maybe a full year of Byrd will make it work, but first base… I say no. It’s a crowded division. As much as I like Polanco, and wonder if maybe he can push Byrd to first and make it work that way… Taillon coming. Okay, yes.
12:21 |
Comment From Dangit posting on comments instead! Is playing with both sides of a real life platoon (e.g. Gomes-Nava, Parra-Ross maybe) a viable fantasy strategy for 4th OF slot?
12:21 |
Eno Sarris: Makes it easy to know who to play. Probably better to get two lefty batters and hope they don’t face a lefty on the same day.
12:22 |
Comment From KevinFavorite bottom of the barrel sleeper catcher? I’m taking like Castillo, Zunino, Avila tier
12:22 |
Comment From EdKeep D. Salazar at $7 or Iwakuma at $11?

Eno Sarris: Salazar is younger and cheaper and people forget that Iwakuma has been hurt a lot (in Japan).

Comment From dudeThe guy from Gabba Gabba is a big deal in the music industry in England I believe. Wiki it. Think he’s a big music producer. That’s why he gets so many interesting guests.
12:24 |
Eno Sarris: I always wondered about that. Great guests. My favorite show among my kid’s favorites.
12:24 |
Comment From Grack ZeinkeIf Alderson is truly appalled by the price for Drew then there is no excuse for them not to find a SS alternative via trade. With the arms they have in the pipeline they could even afford to deal Montero to get a quality young SS. Alcantara?
12:24 |
Eno Sarris: Loser of Owings/Didi? Just hope it costs the lesser pitchers and not THOR.

Comment From Swing and a Miss Puiggyif you could build a fantasy dynasty roster from the pools of any 3 MLB franchises which would they be?
12:26 |
Eno Sarris: Cubs for sure. Plus the Mets arms. And the Astros.
12:26 |
Comment From LarryARudy in Razzball yesterday found that there is no ideal Hitter/Pitcher ratio as long at you are over 60/40. Does this make sense to you?
12:27 |
Eno Sarris: Okay help me try this one on for size. 70/30 is close to ideal. Here comes jenky math. Hitter projections correlate around .70 with reality. Pitcher projections correlate at .5ish. .5 is about .75 of .7. .75 of 40 (which is the positional split between hitters and pitchers) is 30.
boom, 70/30.
12:28 |
Eno Sarris: How bad is that.
12:28 |
Comment From Gila MonsterIf both teams had the same pitcher on the mound somehow and a team full of Andrelton Simmons played a team full of Adam Dunns, who would win?
12:28 |
Eno Sarris: Can’t defend a homer…
12:28 |
Comment From TomPecota likes the Dodgers for 98 wins and no other team for more than 89. The Dodgers are good, but are they that much better than the rest of the league?
12:28 |
Eno Sarris: I would never project a team into 98 wins.
12:29 |
Comment From KevinI can keep 1 of Kuroda, Estrada or Tyson Ross in a keeper. I’ve had Kuroda for years, but he is getting real old. Worth cutting him for one of those guys or should I keep riding the old horse?
12:29 |
Eno Sarris: I stick with Kuroda here. Estrada is interesting, but has his warts and so does Ross. If you had a Salazar-Gray level guy, would be different.
12:29 |
Comment From James R.AL only league with 9- minor/ keepers. Have had Gary Sanchez for 1 1/2 yr. Should I keep him now that McCann is on board? Or is a NL trade too risky to take up the spot? Thank you.
12:30 |
Eno Sarris: I wouldn’t hold on to catcher prospects too tight. Tough position — late debuts, long adjustment periods, big bust rates.

12:32 |
Comment From JeffDoes Gregory Polanco become a leadoff hitter or middle or the order hitter? if leadoff, what happens to Marte?
12:32 |
Eno Sarris: They’d be pretty awesome with Polanco one, Marte two. Cutch has the power to be at three. Good god, that’s nice actually.
12:32 |
Comment From Mike LieberfallWho would you prefer as a long term keeper, Zach Wheeler or Gerrit Cole?
12:32 |
Eno Sarris: Cole by a mile. By a marathon. More control, plus-plus pitches, same velocity.
12:32 |
Comment From timBen Revere? Good/Bad/Other
12:33 |
Eno Sarris: A little underrated in 5×5. Going really late and if you build a strong power team, you can take the power hit and take him for steals late.
12:33 |
Comment From Swing and a Miss PuiggyHow unlikely is Arismendy Alcantara being up by June or July to take Darwin Barney’s job?

12:34 |
Comment From timCan a staff led by Cashner and Waino lead a 12 teamer to a title? I have around $35 to spend on 7 other pitchers.
12:34 |
Eno Sarris: Yes. Quantity is most important, and you have an ace and a number two-ish.
12:35 |
Comment From MattAny idea what the data actually says on ‘doubles turning into hr’s’ – thinking Machado’s chances of hitting 20 this year?
12:35 |
Eno Sarris: No data that says doubles turn into homers. Do pre-peak power people start to hit the ball further? yes. But a 30-year-old with 40 doubles won’t turn those into homers, probably. So Machado could hit 20, doesn’t have a ton do with his doubles.
12:35 |
Comment From BruceRollins, Asdrubal or Aybar?
12:35 |
Eno Sarris: Asdrubal by far.
12:35 |
Comment From BillWhat else will be some things to look for with Fangraphs+ for fantasy players?
12:36 |
Eno Sarris: 1220 player caps, plus in-depth research pieces on fantasy issues, including: how to use GB/FB splits, what tiers look like graphically, what volatility means, how to evaluate the value of a platoon player… good stuff.
12:37 |
Comment From TomAfter all these anti B-Hamilton articles are coming out in bunches lately here, I’m starting to second guess keeping him. Should my last keeper be Harvey, Hamilton, or Matt Adams? No dollars or round keeps, just standard.
12:37 |
Eno Sarris: Salivating on Harvey, but he is a pitcher… how many keepers you got? I’m assuming more like ten, in which case Harvey is keepable. Hamilton going around the tenth in drafts I’m doing.
12:37 |
Comment From jesseDo you think Pujols comes back healty? Steamer has him and Fielder with similar projections, but Puljols ADP is 25 spots lower
12:38 |
Eno Sarris: Health is an issue, but yes, with those projections, I’m passing on Fielder and taking Pujols two-plus rounds later.
12:38 |
Comment From prIf Haren’s fly ball rate is normal, is he a top 25 starter?
12:39 |
Eno Sarris: He’s in a great spot for his skills. I think he could be useful this year, maybe a top-40 starter.
12:39 |
Comment From GsonSMH…projecting king albert to blast 30 homers and hit .280 is being a sissy..come on Eno.. grow a pair…
12:39 |
Eno Sarris: Really? Some people too far down on him. I think those are nice numbers. You want me to put him into 40 homer pants? Nah.

Comment From MiketronI had a draft IPA Nitro the other day and it seemed to not have much hop(I’ve had the same beer in a bottle and it was quite hoppy). Is this common with Nitro IPAs or did I just get a bad draft?
12:40 |
Eno Sarris: The nitro ‘smooths’ or ‘calms’ the flavor out, yes. I kind of like IPAs on nitro for that reason.

12:41 |
Comment From StumpyThoughts about Shelby Miller in the next 1-3 years? Will he become a legit #2 pitcher?
12:42 |
Eno Sarris: Depends on the change, I think. He could use the curve more to offset FB regression, but he may need one more wrinkle to stay legit. I do like him a lot though.
12:42 |
Comment From Cody Asches MomDoes my son make me proud this year or is he his normal disappointing self?
12:43 |
Eno Sarris: I like his hit tool. I think he could hit .275+ with a bad OBP and some power and speed… dunno where he ends up long term though, Maikel Franco is coming at him hard.
12:43 |
Comment From KyleGive us a realistic stat line from Billy Hamilton. Seems like there are guesses on either end of the spectrum for him.
12:44 |
Eno Sarris: If he stays in bigs, it’s because he’s doing just enough. .260/.315. If he can manage that, I actually think his D will be good (on athleticism alone) and then he can steal 60+. It’s no lock he can manage that. Dee Gordon has spooked some people.
12:44 |

12:45 |
Comment From clint hhave you seen what my team is trotting out at first base? when there is shortage of good hitters, why would anyone want a dh league? seems to make more sense to ditch the dh everywhere and expand by 2 teams
12:45 |
Comment From MiketronUmm, Marlon Byrd is on the Phillies not the Pirates…
12:46 |
Eno Sarris: oh got damn. Well I’m on the fence with the Pirates. I love love Polanco, Marte, Cutch. Think Mercer, Walker and Alvarez can be flawed but okay. 1B is terrible, but the Rays make it work. Cole/Taillon is exciting. Lots to like. Just wish they’d have gotten a 1B. Maybe they’ll get Morales for cheap.
12:46 |
Comment From MartyWhat is a good fly ball / line drive / ground rate? I see the numbers in a vacuum on each player’s page, but how do you read the peripherals comparatively?
12:47 |
Eno Sarris: 21% league ave for LD. “good” for GB/FB is tough. Generally, you want fast guys with higher GB rates (but Carlos Gomez has been much better with a high FB rate and power) and you want power guys with higher FB rates (but not too high). I like guys that hover around 1.0 GB/FB, seems like a level swing. Look at Donaldson’s GB/FB and power over his career.
12:47 |
Comment From JoeLeague switching to H2H this year. What are the main stategical differences between it and roto?
12:49 |
Eno Sarris: You have to worry a bit more about young pitchers at the end of the year (innings limits), maybe it’s not great to have too many hitters from one team (they can run into a great-pitching buzzsaw of a team at the wrong time), and remember that your last two or three spots in the draft are almost irrelevant and you might as well reach for upside that might be quickly reached, like a closer candidate or a young guy that *could* make the team out of ST.

Eno Sarris: What’s funny is that there was once a time where my pessimism was treated as optimism. Because he looked turrible and I was saying, dude can still hit .280 20/10 and people laughed at me!

12:49 |
Comment From JakeWhat’s the best LA could get for Eithier in a trade? WORTH IT FOR THEM?
12:50 |
Eno Sarris: Swallow half the contract and get a decent Double-A arm that’s not a top-50 prospect, and an a-ball flier?
12:50 |
Comment From Jay5×5 NL only league. Parra for A. Rendon. Fair?
12:50 |
Eno Sarris: Maybe but I want Rendon, practically launched myself out the chair

12:50 |
Comment From Tom“Rivalries”!? Like the epic Indians vs. Reds? or the Royals vs. Cardinals? Do we have stats to back this up, does attendance really shoot-up for these fake rivalries? I call hogwash!
12:50 |
Eno Sarris: You ever been to a real rivalry game? Dodgers/Giants?
12:51 |
Comment From MartyAgree or disagree: Freeman contract is fair for both sides; he’s shown the ability to at LEAST be at 3 WIN player whilein his prime.
12:51 |
Eno Sarris: I think that it’s possible WAR under-rates him a bit, because even though he looks a bit stiff, his D is pretty good.
12:51 |
Comment From Tongue Punch the Fart BoxLooking to do Pitching for Offense. What would I get in return for Anibal?
12:52 |
Eno Sarris: Great idea. I have no idea. Go look at the teams that need pitching and see what sort of bats they have. Sorry.
12:52 |
Comment From JayI can keep K Wong but I’m nervous that he’ll be stuck in the 8 hole and not run very much or put up other counting stats. And that M. Ellis is around for a reason. Thoughts?
12:52 |
Eno Sarris: Good worries. You know, his upside is not that great either, even if he got out of the 8 spot and pushed Ellis to complete backup, I wouldn’t put him down for much more than .275/10/20.
12:52 |
Comment From BLHow many HR’s will Ellbury hit this season now playing at Yankee Stadium?
12:53 |
Comment From EliDoes Ike Davis have a chance at becoming anything better than bad?
12:53 |
Eno Sarris: Yes! 10% walk rate, .200 ISO all possible. I think it might be .240/.330/.450, but with good glove, that’s aight. He’s bad vs lefties, and more of a mistake hitter, but he does have a bit of an eye at the plate and power.
12:53 |
Comment From MartyMets cant get Didi! The world can’t handle two Jeters in one city!
12:53 |
Eno Sarris: oh this is great
12:54 |
Comment From MarkAm I crazy that Dickey might be amongst the best value picks? His second half, which coincided with better knuckleball velocity, was actually okay.
12:54 |
Eno Sarris: I’ll take him for the back end of any staff.
12:54 |
Comment From MarkDo you feel Peter Bourjos will be fantasy revalent.
12:54 |
Eno Sarris: Real long-shot. I don’t think he’s a mixed-league bench pick.
12:54 |
Eno Sarris: Just the injuries, Jay, and Taveras… all loom.
12:54 |
Eno Sarris: And his profile could easily turn into backup, D-first OF.
12:54 |
Comment From BruceGuess how excited I am as a Tribe fan about the Bryan Lahair signing? Just take a guess.
12:55 |
Eno Sarris: This excited.
12:55 |
Comment From JoseIt’s brutal here in Phoenix – only supposed to be in the 60s today. Please help me out of my depression. I have Mike Trout for $5 in my keeper league, and can keep him through 2016, where his salary escalates by $2 each year. Assuming health and all that jazz, would you ever consider trading him at that rate? And if so, what would be an acceptable return in your eyes?
12:55 |
Eno Sarris: Everything you could ever want. Gerrit Cole, Xander Bogaerts and Carlos Gomez.
12:55 |
Comment From STiVoIs Fangraphs or Beergraphs going to do meet-ups in MLB parks this year? Nats Park will have DC-based microbrews on tap this year throughout the stadium!

12:56 |
Comment From BLWill Michael Pineda make the Yankee rotation and if so, what do you predict for him this season?
12:56 |
Eno Sarris: Could. But still no change up, and what does his velocity look like now. Fourish ERA, okay whip, good K numbers? 100 innings?
12:56 |
Comment From JakeYou know who’s still alive? Jake LoMotta, 92 years old.

Comment From AlexWhy is it that we always meet when my kids are home sick? Or is it that my kids are home sick so I can take part in this chat?
12:57 |
Comment From JoeIt’s a popular view among a certain segment of baseball writers that steroids did not cause the spike of homers we saw in the “steroid era.” Their proof is that ISO and HR/FB rates didn’t change. Doesn’t this assume steroid/PED use has no impact on contact rates? Seems kind of a stretch no?
12:57 |
Eno Sarris: Problem is the pitchers were doing em too.

Comment From Double SimcoeHow come you guys have written nothing about Suk-Min Yoon?

12:57 |
Comment From DeanAndrew Cashner or Danny Salazar?

12:58 |
Eno Sarris: I can’t forget Cashner’s shoulder issues. Salazar.

Comment From PAWSpring training trade off: an afternoon at Papago or Cubs showing off Baez/Bryant/Soler/Almora/etc against big league talent?
12:59 |
Eno Sarris: Game, then Papago. DON’T MAKE ME CHOOSE. Also: if you guys are in AZ around the 14th, there might be a chance to meet FGers.
12:59 |
Comment From DeanI have a good feeling about Wilson Ramos this year, are you on board the Ramos-train?
12:59 |
Eno Sarris: Choooooo chooooo. yeah. it’s all about health.
12:59 |
Comment From JoelWhy do the Giants think it’s a good idea to run back one of the worst starting rotations in baseball from 2013? Shouldn’t they be aware that the status quo isn’t a good idea when your main competitor has to decided to try and outspend you by 100 million a year?
1:00 |
Eno Sarris: I think they’re just waiting for Crick and Escobar. From what I heard from Sabean, he’s ogling other teams with young pitching, and wants to stockpile again for Giants 2.0.

1:01 |
Comment From JimLast year the Jays were Vegas favs to be in the World Series. They lost significant time from Reyes, Lawrie, Bautista, Rasmus, Cabrera, Morrow, Happ and Santos. Catcher and 2nd base were both black holes, and I think Arencibia leaving is addition through subtraction. Is it crazy to think they are contenders if just SOME things go right, instead of literally EVERYTHING going wrong? What do you see out of them? If they get Ubaldo?
1:01 |
Eno Sarris: They need a pitcher and a breakout from Lawrie, and then Stroman and or Nolin to come up and set world on fire. Those things are all possible.
1:01 |
Comment From I hate AngelosCould Carlos Rodon be the 5th starter for the Astros this year? He has to be better than the -1 WAR for the shlub they have in there right now!
1:01 |
Eno Sarris: No reason to start the clock early. But yeah Appel could start year with the big team if they cared about this year.
1:01 |
Comment From JayWho do you favor between closers Henderson or Chisek?
1:02 |
Eno Sarris: Cishek. Trade risk vs walk rate risk.

1:02 |
Eno Sarris: Lawrie. Gonna steal more.

1:02 |
Comment From A Dreaming Reds FanIf Hamilton somehow had OBP of .375 (wishful thinking), how many SBs could he have, given 150 games played.

1:02 |
Eno Sarris: all of them! 100+?
1:03 |
Comment From JayA. Lambo get much PT in Pit this year? If so, will he be any good?
1:04 |
Eno Sarris: So Tabata starts year v LHP at least. Sanchez v LHP. That leaves 1B and LF (to start year, I think Polanco is close) open for a left. Lambo, Decker… they have a shot. And it’d be better if they did it at first base. Have a feeling it might look ugly all year tho.
1:04 |
Comment From dudeWriting a piece and figured I could save time with reference. Is there recent roto math out there that helps us figure out when it makes sense to take high BA low HR fantasy baseball player over above average HR below average fantasy baseball BA? And things of that nature?

1:04 |
Comment From DioIn a ten team mixed league is it a good idea to start targeting pitchers is the 4th round?
1:05 |
Eno Sarris: Maybe an ace. In a ten-teamer, you might be able to wait another round if you see a hitter you like.
1:05 |
Comment From StephenWhat team do you think has the best bench?
1:06 |
Eno Sarris: If Boston signs Drew, them. It’s funny, Mariners don’t have a great starting lineup, but considering that one of Franklin, Gutierrez, Almonte.. Hart or Morrison will be on their bench some days.
1:06 |
Comment From BrendanEno – you going to double ipa fest?
1:06 |

Comment From dgcoQuick glance at beer graphs shows Colorado severely underrepresented. Don’t you guys know it’s beer mecca here?

1:07 |
Eno Sarris: 27 and meh everything but speed, but yes.
1:08 |
Comment From AlanJean Segura’s 2nd half was downright ugly, why is he being drafted so high? Couldn’t it be possible the first half was the outlier?
1:08 |
Eno Sarris: Half-season splits are not predictive. Best to look at season as a whole, especially when it lines up with minor league production. You think he can’t hit .275+ with 5+ homers and 30+ steals? That’s in the discussion for the best shortstop in the league.
1:09 |
Comment From DioAvisail Garcia or brandon moss as a last outfielder ?

Eno Sarris: If you can platoon Moss, him.
1:09 |
Comment From ENOrmousDynasty arm: Martin Perez vs A.J. Griffin?
1:09 |
Eno Sarris: I’m not big on Perez. Griffin low ceiling, but I like him enough.
1:09 |
Comment From johninstead of drew, wouldnt the mets be better of going after aldemys diaz? probably cheaper, won’t cost a draft pick. I know Alderson for some reason doesnt like dabbling in the cuban market, but come on. Drew? 1 good year in last 4 and it happened to be last year?
1:10 |
Eno Sarris: Diaz’ stats in Cuba are really vanilla. Worse than Guerrero’s, and Guerrero just lost the job in LA before he had it. Good thing that $48 million check cleared.
1:10 |
Comment From Nickany advice for a first time Ottoneu player? I have only done H2H points leagues so this draft and first season is going to be dramatic shift.
1:11 |
Eno Sarris: Don’t treat it as a deep league. You need 12-team worthy starters. Once you have that in place, get 3-5 prospects, and then look for guys that you’d get on waiver or stream in normal leagues to round out the roster. Platoon outfielders, meh pitchers in nice parks…
1:11 |
Comment From KevinJason Castro. Regression or Massive-Don’t draft me-regression?

Eno Sarris: might be Lee’s last year, have you read that? Greinke seems like an injury risk to me. JZ.
1:13 |
Comment From STiVoNobody’s threatening Koji for Red Sox’s saves, right? Any chance they go more towards committee?
1:13 |
Eno Sarris: Mujica is the same guy, I doubt they reach for lesser Koji if Koji isn’t Koji. So it’s Koji or Tazawa IMO.
1:14 |
Comment From El Oso Blancospeaking of Aoki as leadoff for KC: buying or selling? He could see an increase in runs above 80 while batting .280 and stealing 15 all for the low price of an 174 ADP.
1:14 |
Eno Sarris: Buying, slightly. Yost turned Frenchy into a 20-steal guy, too.
1:14 |
Comment From juan pierres mustachePizza Port: high quantity of releases (over 400 on Untappd, average ~50 a year), generally stick to common pale/IPA/2xIPA/stout/porter styles with a couple exceptions, mediocre Style+ compared to other options, BAR depends on quantity of releases. Decent floor because of so many new beers, upside for BAR and I guess maybe Style+ if you think they’ve been improving recently. Won 2nd place for “best large brewpub” at GABF for whatever that’s worth.
1:14 |
Eno Sarris: Port Brewing fantasy beer league scouting report. I think fantasy beer might catch on.

1:14 |
Comment From JWill Bauer ever have a place in the majors?
1:15 |
Eno Sarris: Changing his mechanics now…

1:15 |
Comment From RyguyWhat do you personally use for player projections…Composite of systems, Podhorzers, or create your own? How long would it take to create a solid player projection using Pod’s system.
1:16 |
Eno Sarris: I do an intuitive mix of projections, in that I take Steamer and then modify them slightly where I think PT or upside (or downside) isn’t well represented. By starting with a projection system, you don’t do something crazy. I generally try to stay within the band created by the projection.

1:16 |
Eno Sarris: I’ve seen him go in the tenth, so no.

1:16 |
Comment From MarkDoesn’t EPL, and soccer generally, have a balanced schedule (minus Cup obligations)? Play all the other teams once home and away.
1:16 |
Comment From TomI don’t think 100% balanced is possible, but it is very lopsided and unfair to the 2nd tier teams stuck in divisions like the AL East or West when Cleveland is able to sneak into the playoffs after beating up on Minnesota and Chicago 18 times.
1:17 |
Comment From RotoLandoYou like saisons and the like? Try Seventh Sun in FL, if you haven’t already.
1:17 |
Comment From Gila MonsterMost projections have Ryan Braun returning to his high production in 2014. While you wrote on the effect of PEDs on his performance, I think PEDs have a bigger impact on guys staying healthy/on field. Consider Braun was always one of those guys that was seemingly constantly D2D with a groin strain or a barking hammy, do you think those nagging injuries turn into DL stints? Is the biggest risk with him going forward?
1:17 |
Eno Sarris: Could be a way he erodes his counting stats, yes. More absences.
1:17 |
Comment From DCWould you keep Cashner over Rosenthal? Already keeping Sale, Zimmermann and Jansen. 2 stud closers is legit though right?
1:18 |
Eno Sarris: aw man. ok. Given Cash’s history, it’s okay.
1:18 |
Comment From GuestHow much will FG+ cost?
1:18 |
Comment From JBDDo you like the idea of baseball enforcing the rule (currently in place!) that pitchers take no more than a certain time between pitches? A clock in CF would be cool, I think. Games are too long!
1:19 |
Eno Sarris: I don’t think I’ve watched a good game and ever thought, this is too long.
1:19 |
Comment From JayWho wins the 2b battle of CO?
1:19 |
Eno Sarris: DJLM I guess. Fantasy’s rooting for Rutledge though.
1:19 |
Comment From SRDo Puig or Myers have sophomore slumps? Which one would you keep?
1:19 |
Eno Sarris: With Puig’s stolen bases, I’ll keep him. he could batting average regress, but so could Myers. his SBs will help make it better.
1:20 |
Comment From prMaybin went pretty low in the mock draft. Is he really that much worse than Eaton or Quentin?
1:20 |
Eno Sarris: His knees are, but it’s a good spot, I noticed that too.
1:20 |
Comment From SteveThoughts on Rasmus this year?
1:20 |
Eno Sarris: Bad batting average, no steals, 18-20 homers? Sounds like a deep leaguer.
1:21 |
Comment From Ringtone ComposerSomething that should be talked about more: clauses in regional sports network TV deals that allow the TV network to cancel the contract if certain viewership metrics aren’t hit. (Could be a huge revenue hit for some teams.)

Eno Sarris: Very interesting.

1:21 |
Comment From saskatunesCan’t really believe that Y! still has Braun ranked as #7 overall. That’s crazy, right?
1:21 |
Eno Sarris: No. I mean, I’d rather have him after the turn or during it, but that’s not crazy. We don’t even know if he’ll stop doing steroids.
1:22 |
Comment From DustinI’ve got to sign a $25 Yu Darvish in a pitching heavy league(start 10 pitchers, no IP limit for the year, IP/QS/ERA/WHIP/K/SV). How concerned should I be about owing him $44 in 2016 on a 3 year contract?
1:22 |
Eno Sarris: I would be. I see a lot of injury markers.
1:22 |
Eno Sarris: But keep him this year and if you’re out of it, he’s the first piece to go.
1:22 |
Comment From JeremyThoughts on Anthony Rendon this year, and for the next few. I have him in my 12-team keeper league for $1 (we keep 10), and am debating on whether or not to keep/drop him.
1:22 |
Eno Sarris: Love him. Caress him.
1:22 |
Comment From DanWhere should I draft Samardizja
1:22 |
Eno Sarris: After the tenth round. But draft him.

1:23 |
Eno Sarris: Cobb, Minor, Cash, Corb
1:23 |
Comment From Profar, ProgoodWhat kind of line would you expect from profar this season?
1:23 |
Comment From BeattieDo you think projections are too weighted on past performance and not current stats? Shouldn’t they look at current velocity, plate discipline, batted ball profile trends..etc. Saying s pitcher was good in the past and will continue to be good seems odd when the player lost velocity, whiffs decreased…etc
1:24 |
Eno Sarris: Projections start, at the very bottom, with Marcel for the most part. Marcel weights last year 5 times, the year before 3 times, the year before twice. Then divide by ten. Steamer then puts in last year velocity and GB trends. Then you compare the player to their place on the aging curve. Lots of stuff in there.
1:25 |
Comment From VicAzdribble or B. Miller?
1:25 |
Eno Sarris: I’ll take either, or the the cheaper one, they both going around 160s. Miler has the upside, though, so if same cost, Miller.
1:25 |
Comment From RotoLandoA Dodgers/Giants game is like a Dothraki wedding…anything less than three deaths is considered a dull affair.
1:26 |
Comment From JeremyWhat sort of regression, if any, do you see from Carlos Gomez this year?
1:26 |
Eno Sarris: Batting average.
1:26 |
Comment From johnRemember before last year when Freeman is what he is? Then he blows up, now hes some super star!
1:26 |
Eno Sarris: Still think he is what he is. .280/25 with decent defense and OBP. Just happens that’s worth a lot of money.
1:26 |
Comment From ToddWould you move Ackley for Danny Duffy?
1:27 |
Eno Sarris: Love Duffy’s strikeouts. Don’t think Ackley’s going to be a great roto asset. Both risky, I’ll let your team needs decide it. If truly no needs, take the hitter.
1:27 |
Comment From TomDodgers vs. Giants, have never been but they would probably sell out regardless of if they played 18 times or 11. Plus the expanded games against “rivals” has watered down rivalries when they happen every other weekend. Does anyone get excited for Red Sox vs. Yankees anymore?
1:28 |
Eno Sarris: Yes. In those two cities, and the Yankees actually need a bit of help selling out these days.
1:28 |
Comment From DanShould I be liking the Mariners offense? Cano, Seager…can Corey Hart produce another 30/100?
1:28 |
Eno Sarris: no. Corey Hart was a 20 homer guy on the road even when he was good.
1:28 |
Comment From GuestI’ve been able to draft Yan Gomes near the last rd in 5×5 mixed mock drafts. Is it a good idea to ignor C all draft then just take him near the end to be my starter?
1:28 |
Eno Sarris: yes. There are three or four guys on the waiver that can come in and help if Gomes’ K% regresses hard.
1:28 |
Comment From BLDoes Kole Calhoun have any fantasy relevancy?
1:29 |
Eno Sarris: He was old at his levels, played in small parks in hitter leagues… But I think he can .270/18/10 so yeah.
1:29 |
Comment From CharlesYahoo has Headley at nearly #200th overall. Great value pick? Especially in OBP league.
1:29 |
Comment From juan pierres mustachei will be doing periodic BeerGraphs meetups in Citizen’s Bank Park. No one else is invited. I will sit in the centerfield patio, attempt to drink all of the good beers, and watch as little of the Phillies playing “baseball” as possible.

Comment From GuestAny guess on an ETA for George Springer? He seems like he instantly would become the most valuable Astro
1:30 |
Eno Sarris: After super-two deadline, the guys in the current OF will have had about 150 PAs to show their stuff.
1:30 |
Comment From AlexDo you have a sleeper pick for 3b this year?
1:31 |
Eno Sarris: Lawrie, Headley. Deeper? Dominguez, Johnson.

Comment From johnSo Luebke killed me. Tell me which Dillon Gee to expect, because now I think I have to consider keeping him. Also, any chance Eovaldi takes a next step. He throws hard!
1:32 |
Eno Sarris: I don’t love Eovaldi. He’s the opposite of Gee, though. Gee has two okay offspeed pitches and a bad fastball, Eovaldi only has a fastball. Gee’s more likely to remain a starter, Eovaldi has more upside. I think Gee can do a high-threes ERA again.
1:32 |
Comment From SchafWhat are your projections on the Panda?

Comment From DanCastro & Rizzo. Talk to me about Castro and Rizzo. In a H2H do I want them? Sit an take Castro late? Expect big things from Rizzo?
1:34 |
Eno Sarris: I’ll take them. Castro went 117… that’s okay, would rather have B Miller at 160. Castro is a backup plan that people are taking higher. Rizzo went 46 and I’d rather have him later too. 70/80.

Not really a question, just thought you would like to know.

Comment From BobbyWhat kind of expectations do you have of Yelich, short and long term?

1:41 |
Comment From EMachado overrated this year? I dont see his counting stats being worth his ADP. Better real life player than fantasy IMOo, like jason heyward.
1:41 |
Comment From Average Sports FanYou seem higher on Alex Wood than most. Usually hear him as reliever, and his arm is going to explode. What do you see that others are missing?
1:41 |
Eno Sarris: that he’ll be good until his arm explodes
1:42 |
Comment From Antonio D.your boy Antonio D here. Wondering what you think about Johann Santana and if the Yanks might sign him to a minor league deal.

Comment From JonSzymborski pegged Masterson and Porcello (and others) as possible breakouts this year. What say you about those two, in particular?
1:43 |
Eno Sarris: I still think Masterson doesn’t have the arsenal. Porcello, however, just added a curve and that’s a big deal. and his Infield D got better.

Comment From balticfoxGoing to take the plunge and try Ottoneu pts. league! Am I right in saying that it’s pretty similar to regular pts. leagues in that you want power, good BA, and good walk rate for hitters, and SPs that can get you approx. 200 innings with a good K rate without giving up a lot of HRs?
1:44 |
Eno Sarris: think wOBA and FIP yeah
1:44 |
Comment From GuestIt’s below zero in Iowa and we get a ton of blackouts on mlb.tv. Also car trouble

1:44 |
Comment From GuestHow does/will Gray continue to succeed with 2 pitches?
1:44 |
Eno Sarris: Good news is that the big hammer curve doesn’t have big platoon splits. So if he can just improve the two-seamer or the cutter, he has a chance.
1:44 |
Comment From Eno SaarinenThe pitch-count-clock would also decrease the time TV viewers have to listen to Joe Morgan. Upside!

Comment From Miketrontil next week Mr. Sarris
With a phone full of pictures of pitchers' fingers, strange beers, and his two toddler sons, Eno Sarris can be found at the ballpark or a brewery most days. Read him here, writing about the A's or Giants at The Athletic, or about beer at October. Follow him on Twitter @enosarris if you can handle the sandwiches and inanity.
Is playing with both sides of a real life platoon (e.g. Gomes-Nava, Parra-Ross maybe) a viable fantasy strategy for 4th OF slot?
Thumbs down for my own stupidity
