Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 3/27/14
11:48 |
: here in 12 minutes it looks like
|
11:48 |
:
|
11:49 |
: Enjoy this upbeat tune in the meantime.
|
12:00 |
Should we still be worried about Doug Fister? |
12:00 |
: Only a tiny bit more than any other pitcher, given his age and something that might have given him DL time in the regular season.
|
12:00 |
Hi Eno…do you have a link to this report? You mentioned it a week or two ago on a chat and how Shields and Fister were on there. I did a search and couldn’t find this particular report for this year. Wanted to see who else is on there. Thanks! |
12:01 |
http://blogs.thescore.com/m… (giggle did fister giggle)
: It wasn’t for this year. Shields was the subject of his first post on the Injury Zone. I did Fister here |
12:01 |
3 more pitchers suffered arm injuries in the time it took you to listen to that song. |
12:01 |
: OH NO WE HAVE TO STOP BEING
|
12:01 |
hey eno, Is Erasmo Ramirez’s newfound reliance on non fastball pitches a sign of a leap foward this year? |
12:02 |
: It’s a familiar move for pitchers that aren’t getting it done with the fastball. Dillon Gee had some success with that move too. Pitching backwards in a way. I’d be more excited about it in the NL. But at least his home park is nice.
|
12:02 |
Do I really deserve to be on so many 2014 Busts lists? What kind of numbers do you expect from me this season? |
12:03 |
: Nah, too much hate. I think you can .265/15/15 without Coors.
|
12:03 |
Does Chris Heisey have a legit chance to come away with the LF job over Ludwick? |
12:03 |
: Doubt it.
|
12:03 |
czech or german pils? |
12:03 |
: German but I’m German so my vote doesn’t count. (Also I’ve had great great pils in both places)
|
12:03 |
Last week you told me that I would make my first regular season start in the majors on opening day, but they chose Conor Gillaspie over me?!? What happened, and when do the White Sox stop messing around and call me back up? |
12:03 |
: I know I know I’m pissed. No idea. Maybe it’s a service time move because he did fine in the spring. July 1? Sigh.
|
12:04 |
Keeping Jose in the last round… what round should I begin to target an SP2? And what sort of tier should I be looking at? |
12:04 |
: Having Jose in your back pocket means you can wait all the way to round 7/8 to get a high number two.
|
12:04 |
Eno!!!! I landed Tanner Scheppers in my AL-only auction a few weeks back assuming he’d give me some great relief numbers. Now that he’s a starter, I have no idea what to make of him. Should I roll the dice and find out, or try and trade him now to a member of my league who is a much bigger believer of his starting abilities? On a side note, how many pitchers can say that their first career start turned out to be the season opener? Thanks for your time! |
12:06 |
: yeah this is a strange moment. I know some people doubt Scheppers, and we’ll have to see what his velocity will look like as a starter, but he’s very close to being a capable starter. His change gets 12% whiffs and better than 50% grounders, so it’s just a tweak away from average. His curve and fastballs are great. I might keep him.
|
12:06 |
Who knows? Eno’s! |
12:06 |
Does Abraham Almonte play every day in Seattle? |
12:06 |
: Almost. I could see Michael Saunders sneaking in from time to time. But I love Almonte. Wrote about him on RG. Deep league must.
|
12:07 |
Are you a Mike Olt believer? What’s his realistic upside this season with everyday at-bats at third base? |
12:07 |
: Dunno, too much K% for a batting average league. Could OBP good. (I write for a living!) Okay power. .230/.320/.400?
|
12:07 |
ENOOOOOO |
12:08 |
: like I’m falling down a cliff and he’s reaching for me
|
12:08 |
Eno, man of the people. Are buying into this Drew Hutchinson charecter? Took a flyer on him thanks to the uptick in velocity. |
12:09 |
: not really. even if his velocity is up a bit, his change and slider are only average. He can be average. In the AL.
|
12:09 |
: (not quite a recipe for fantasy success)
|
12:09 |
How the hell are the Cardinals in the bottom half of the RP projections? I guess we’ll find out soon? |
12:09 |
: I’m guessing some below RL guys at the bottom dragging them down.
|
12:09 |
It’s looking more and more like Nate Jones is a right handed version of Matt Thornton – a guy that throws heat but very straight. That tends to play better in the 8th inning versus closing. Thoughts on Matt Lindstrom winning the closing gig? |
12:10 |
: At least Jones’ offspeed stuff beats Thornton’s. And in terms of peripherals, only David Robertson matched a 10+k/9, 3-bb/9, 50+% GB last year. I love love Jones.
|
12:10 |
So I’m going to have a roster spot opening once they start DLing guys. Who has more upside, Corey Dickerson or Junior Lake? |
12:11 |
: Lake more likely to get playing time, but if they got equal playing time I’d take Dickerson for better BA and some power and speed.
|
12:11 |
What kind of name is Eno? |
12:11 |
: Dunno. Named after Brian Eno, who is British and Strange.
|
12:11 |
Hey Eno, thoughts on Josmil Pinto this year? whats a reasonable expectation for PA’s and offensive number? |
12:12 |
: If he’s on the roster, he’s playing a decent amount IMO, and he’s on the roster. I’ll give him 350-400 PA and 12 homers and a .260 average. Throw him in that scrum.
|
12:12 |
Hi Eno…it’s late in the drafting season so I’m guessing these won’t be available this year, right? |
12:13 |
: I hang my head in shame. We may still get it up so that y’all can trouble shoot the tool so it’s killer next season.
|
12:13 |
Play in any Sv+Hold lgs? Thinking aboit steaming 1/5 RP slots. Good idea? Santos or Hunter? Tazawa, Farq, McGee Allen good? Thanks a ton. |
12:13 |
: It’s hard to stream relievers to get holds. Usage is unpredictable. I’ll take Santos over Hunter for nice K/9. Your group is excellent.
|
12:14 |
:
|
12:14 |
: Something totally different why not.
|
12:14 |
Is FanGraphs your full-time job? What does it all entail? |
12:15 |
: Lots of fantasy work, and then going to the ballpark a couple times a week to suffer abuse and try to get good interviews from a statistical viewpoint. Got here with a lot of luck, good timing, and now probably millions of words over the last five years.
|
12:15 |
here in 12 mins? song is 4 mins…i aint repeating that 3 times |
12:16 |
: So you’re not a repeater. Neither am I! But I like the queue to build up some, even if I don’t really need to do it. I’m not even at 12 yet.
|
12:16 |
from what i’m reading daric barton will platoon in oakland. hit vs RHP and sit vs LHP. i can’t figure out why though.. for his career he has a wRC+ of 129 vs LHP and 96 vs RHP. why would they sit him against lefties? am I missing something? |
12:16 |
: Reverse platoon splits usually take 1000+ plate appearances to become reliable. Is he there yet? (I mean 1000 against each hand.)
|
12:16 |
Eno, would you consider Justin Smoak a good post – hype sleeper / end game pick in a league that counts OBP? |
12:17 |
: Eh. I mean I have him in AL-LABR (12-team AL-only with CI/MI, 5OF) but it’s crowded in Seattle. He will only play 2/3 of the time at best, IMO.
|
12:17 |
Can you rank these pitchers Eric Johnson, Tyler Skaggs, Jake Odorizzi Robbie Ross, Drew Huchinson |
12:17 |
: Skaggs, dunno. Guess Odorizzi has a decent home park and I haven’t seen the splitter yet. Hutchison next?
|
12:17 |
Hi Eno…what positions do you think have the biggest drop offs this year after the first few? |
12:17 |
: Second base.
|
12:18 |
With Pinto making the Twins roster, would you rather own him than Yan Gomes? |
12:18 |
: No, Pinto is younger and younger catchers have a harder time learning the ropes. Plus, his K% could be large, and his BA small. Riskier than Gomes.
|
12:18 |
Eno, my 11 team AL only league auction is tonight. Any last minute auction tips? Deep sleepers? |
12:19 |
: Don’t spend too much time throwing guys you don’t want. At some point, you need to throw guys that are crucial to your decision trees. In other words. If you’re planning on going cheap at catcher, at some point you need to throw the cheap catchers you like to make sure you can get a cheap catcher and don’t need to adjust. Also, I hate most $1 hitters in that kind of setup.
|
12:20 |
Worst beer ever?? |
12:20 |
: Might be that IPA in Trader Joe’s, Boatswain.
|
12:20 |
Thoughts on AJ Griffin? I know he is hurt |
12:20 |
: I love him because he’s going to ditch the cutter, which sucked, and focus on the 4s, CB, CH — his CH is better than people think.
|
12:20 |
Eno, any news on the future of Kevin Gausman? Do you see him closing game in Baltimore of starting games this summer? |
12:21 |
: Still love this guy. Only guy on team with ace upside. I think he’s in the rotation somewhere. Maybe they start him as swing man and wait for Norris’ elbow to go.
|
12:21 |
Do you enjoy the ‘Enjoy By’ series? Might have to go grab a Enjoy by 4/20 for tonight’s tournament games |
12:21 |
: It’s really great.
|
12:21 |
In leagues that count Holds, it seems there are quite a few of quality relievers who get them. Can’t I just wait until the last couple of rounds to grab my middle relievers/setup men and still be fine? |
12:21 |
: yes
|
12:21 |
Loose lips sink wooden shjips |
12:21 |
I’m in an AL-only league and kept Kole Calhoun going into this season. Don’t get me wrong, I love the guy, but I’m a little amazed by just how high some experts have him projected. Are you drinking the Koolaid as well? |
12:22 |
: I like him for cheap. .270/18/15. If someone is going to give you more than that, giddyap. He was old for his levels and hit in hitter’s parks.
|
12:22 |
Eno, who the “your guys” that you’ve ended up with on multiple teams. I own stock in Gyorko, Cobb, Miller and Gray all over town. |
12:23 |
: Miller all over town. Rendon. Lawrie. some Smyly. surprising amoutn of Dom Brown because people seem to hate him. Khris Davis. Skaggs, Paxton. Kluber.
|
12:23 |
I know you like Carlos Carrasco, but what’s the upside? Can he be a mixed-league guy? |
12:24 |
: Not sure about that yet. His command is iffy. He has the pitches, but if they are all average or barely above, he might just be average. I’m touting him as a deep leaguer for now. But before I say he has no elite pitch… 25% on the slider is pretty damn good.
|
12:24 |
I love the guy, but do the Jays really think Dustin McGowan can handle SP innings for the whole season, or are they just throwing him out there to bide time for a trade, Stroman callup, or one of Romero/Happ to figure out how to pitch again? The last time Dusty pitched over 100 innings in a year in ANY level was 2008! |
12:25 |
: I think they’re just going to give Stroman et al more time by letting McGowan go for it.
|
12:25 |
Thoughts on Nate Silver’s new 538? |
12:25 |
: I’m a fan. I don’t read every piece, but it’s fairly funny while being data driven about great topics.
|
12:25 |
Are you a fan of slightly reaching for guys you like in a draft or going by rankings? |
12:26 |
: It’s the same question as spending more than your values. I try to never do that. Maybe I’ll spend an extra buck on an elite guy to make sure I buy into the elite guys, but.. Do a mock. Never reach. See how you get sad, but then find a great guy at a great value at that position later, and your team is better for it.
|
12:26 |
Do you think Tommy Hunter will get the bulk of the Orioles’ save opportunities in 2014? (Who’s next in line?) |
12:27 |
: yeah it’s the lack of other options that makes him the closer IMO. Webb might be next in line, and I keep talking about this (crazy?) idea that Norris should close and Gausman should start.
|
12:27 |
How worried are you about Hamels and Darvish? |
12:27 |
: Decently. I’ll reserve judgement on Darvish, but I had him pegged as one of the bigger injury risks because he was on DL last year, throws tons of sliders, and doesn’t have a great walk rate. And this neck thing could be related to his trapezius issues last year.
|
12:28 |
Is Donaldson, Tehrehan, Smyly, and Kennedy enough to get Miggy? The other guy desperately needs pitching. |
12:28 |
: I dunno but it’s enough to try.
|
12:28 |
Pick 2 in an OBP 5×5 league… Dee Gordon, Chris Owings, Johnathan Villar |
12:28 |
: Owings and Villar
|
12:28 |
Do you see Dee Gordon becoming the starter at all this year? |
12:28 |
: Like, I think he will, but I just think he won’t do that well.
|
12:28 |
How many .300/30 HR seasons does Machado have in him? |
12:29 |
: If he doesn’t iron out the pop up problem, none.
|
12:29 |
Baez or Springer in a dynasty league? |
12:29 |
: Baez because he plays a more premium position and his K rate wasn’t as bad as Springers if I remember right.
|
12:29 |
18 team league, lost corbin. Best options on waivers: carrasco, ross, taylor jordan. who do you like best for upside |
12:30 |
: Ross safest. Jordan has decent upside with two above-average offspeed pitches and the right park and league. Might take him over Ross on upside since Ross has no change.
|
12:30 |
Out of all the pitcher injuries, which one do you think is the most impactful loss? Corbin? |
12:30 |
: If I can’t pick Beachlen or Medey, yeah Corbin was bad.
|
12:30 |
Do you see Gyorko taking steps forward this year or remaining the same as last year? |
12:31 |
: I bet the walk rate goes up, which won’t be a concern for most of you.
|
12:31 |
Ervin Santana or ubaldo jiminez. Sho you drafting out of those 2 ? |
12:31 |
: Ervin in NL.
|
12:31 |
Mark Trumbo hit what’s probably going to be the shortest dinger of the season (non-Pesky’s Pole Division). Wouldn’t have guessed that a week ago. |
12:31 |
Cal Ripken is starting to look like Peter Angelos, who started looking like the Emperor in Star Wars a long, long time ago. How soon will Cal’s transformation to the dark side be complete? |
12:31 |
Jason Marquis has pitched a career 1900 innings, earning in excess of 50 million dollars, and has a grand total of 7.5 career WAR. Can you think of anyone as mediocre who stuck around longer? |
12:31 |
: Livan Hernandez came to mind but he was better when he was younger.
|
12:32 |
I think this year begins the period of Jared Weaver turning into the new Barry Zito. Agree/Disagree? |
12:32 |
: He hit 88 once in the game we saw in spring training. Super down on him. No shares.
|
12:32 |
THANK YOU for introducing me to Lagunitas! It recently became available at my local store here in Kansas (finally) and I don’t think I’ve had anything better. But man, that ABV though. |
12:32 |
: Be careful with Sucks!
|
12:32 |
Am I wrong to be this excited about Dillon Gee? For where he’s being drafted, how can I be wrong? |
12:32 |
: Well if you pay nothing, sure.
|
12:32 |
Bautista is getting Lot of “hes injured alot, declining” comments. Is he a risky pick now, or is he still a beast? |
12:33 |
: The shallower your league, the better a pick he is because the better the replacement will be.
|
12:33 |
Robert Erlin worth a pickup in a moderately deep roto league? |
12:33 |
: Sure. I like his curve and command and park. But don’t start him at first.
|
12:33 |
Marcus Semien. Like him now that Beckham is on the DL, can he run with that job? |
12:33 |
: Yeah I like Semien, but I thought Beckham would play enough to either be traded or released. So even if he plays well, he may not keep job all year.
|
12:34 |
Head to head league, draft tomorrow night. Thinking about only taking hitters that are projected to have at least 10 steals and 10 Home runs. Thoughts? |
12:34 |
: I’ve been doing this for the most part, well not only guys with 10+ steals, but only guys with power and trying to get the speed with the power. I’ll be middle of the pack in steals and watching the wire, most likely. I hate no power speedsters.
|
12:34 |
Eno, loved the latest Joey Votto piece. What’s is the one thing that you take away from those interviews with him? |
12:35 |
: He’s very thoughtful. He’s emotional but strong, has an ego but knows his limitations. An amazing interview and an amazing guy.
|
12:35 |
The only pitcher besides Scheppers this is true for is Fernando Valenzuela, btw |
12:35 |
Colby Lewis: deep (like 20 team mixed) usable this season? |
12:36 |
: I have him in my 12-team AL-only scoresheet on the bench.
|
12:36 |
Minions from despicable me say “ENO ENO ENO ENO ENO ENO” when putting out fires |
12:36 |
: Nice.
|
12:36 |
Drafted Roark in my deep 14-team mixed keeper league. Should I immediately drop him for Jordan if Jordan wins the #5 spot? |
12:36 |
: I would.
|
12:36 |
During the regular season, how much baseball do you actually watch? Multiple games per day? |
12:36 |
: It’s hard to get the whole thing in with my schedule, but at least one a day, probably average around 1.4.
|
12:36 |
Any hidden power sleepers you’re targeting in the end game? Think Arcia could chip in with 25+? |
12:38 |
: 20+, but he’s good. I assume you mean deeper than Khris Davis. There’s Avisail Garcia for power/speed. MArcell Ozuna has some power. shudders Mike Morse looking pretty big right now. The crapshoot in Seattle.
|
12:38 |
pronounce scheppers as sheepers -> life becomes more fun in general |
12:39 |
Follow up pils question : Favorite American German style pils? Mine is Victory Prima Pils but being in NY I miss out on most west coast stuff… |
12:39 |
: there aren’t a lot of west coast pils. Firestone Walker has a good one.
|
12:39 |
Fister an OK SP2 in a 16-teamer or would you prefer him as a 3? |
12:39 |
: No you’re fine.
|
12:39 |
Where do you think B. Miller hits in the lineup for the M’s. I’ve seen a projected lineup that has Ackley leading off and Miller 9th. That can’t last, right? |
12:40 |
: Yeah I hope not. Ackley had a good spring, but Miller better suited for that. They could share 1/2 too.
|
12:40 |
Are the Indians screwed by not . Adding pitching depth to offset the loss of Jimenez and kazmir? |
12:41 |
: I wish they had. I like them as a team but that’s a worry. Teams use 10 starters on average and their 6-9 is Bauer, Tomlin, Marcum. Well, it *could* work out.
|
12:41 |
Fish just sent Marisnick down despite a great spring. Expect him back soon enough to make a real contribution in 2014? |
12:41 |
: Phew. I have Ozuna being useful and Marisnick would have cut into that. I’m more into Yelich and Ozuna than Jake, who has all the same K issues but fewer other skills to offset them.
|
12:41 |
Answer the question. Yes or E no? |
12:42 |
: ANSWER THE QUESTION
|
12:42 |
Wow–positional rankings for relief pitchers. Sounds like a supreme crapshoot. Good luck! |
12:42 |
: Tried my best.
|
12:42 |
I know that you’re a believer in Carlos Carrasco, but could you talk about some of the changes that he’s made to give you such high hopes? |
12:43 |
: It’s not about changes, it’s about the fact that his pitches already have good movement and get whiffs. His change, slider and curve all get average or above whiffs, and his sinker gets 60% gbs. Hits all the right notes. Just needs better command.
|
12:43 |
12 team mix 5×5 standard scoring 3 OFs 2 UTIL Chris Heisey or Christain Yelich? |
12:43 |
: YELICH
|
12:43 |
Is this the year Franklin Morales puts it together? |
12:43 |
: as a LOOGY? sure!
|
12:43 |
Sarris Polaris roger maris likes Paris. |
12:43 |
How much baseball is played in Jamaica? |
12:44 |
: none. So going there next weekend will be work for BeerGraphs.
|
12:44 |
Eno – on the podcast you often refer to a pitcher’s specific pitches as “above average” or “below average.” Where can we find out, say, an average curveball is at getting a batter out. Is this available on FG? Thanks |
12:44 | : I’ll do this for ground balls too at some point |
12:44 |
Do you think Pujols is a top 10 first baseman again this year? |
12:45 |
: yes.
|
12:45 |
I managed to get both Adrian Beltre and David Wright in my 5×5 h2h 12-team both leagues re-auction league. However, I am short on starting pitching. Is it worth trying to trade one of these guys for a high level SP, say Verlander, or should I just be content to stream (original intent). League starts a 3B and a CI. Thanks Eno. |
12:46 |
: You can probably get more out of them in a trade, say something like Wright for Abreu and Estrada or Belt and Shelby Miller… but try streaming for a bit. if your closers are good enough, it could work.
|
12:46 |
[Insert obligatory Nick Franklin question here] |
12:47 |
: [obligatory should be on the Mets but isn’t yet answer]
|
12:47 |
Eno…what kinda name is that? Get outta this chat! (hahaha) |
12:47 |
Kluber’s ST numbers (I know, I know) haven’t inspired much confidence. No reason to worry, right? |
12:47 |
: Never know what he was working on.
|
12:47 |
What’s the latest on Chapman’s recovery? How much time is he supposed to miss? |
12:47 |
: 4-6 was the last I heard.
|
12:47 |
Why are people now comparing Ventura to Salazar? Theres no comparison, right? |
12:48 |
: No. Salazar has a wicked split-change, a strong slider, AND that cheese. I feel like I can see Ventura’s curve coming, and though his change gets good whiffs, I haven’t seen it much and he doesn’t throw either of his offspeed pitches much.
|
12:48 |
Just trying to offer some helpful criticism, but on the Sleeper and the Bust podcast with Jason Collette, every time Jason stops talking and waits for you to respond, there’s a pause and you say “yeeaaah…” before offering any analysis. |
12:48 |
: Working on that and my UMs. We don’t script the whole thing out line by line, so that’s me thinking. I’ll work on it.
|
12:49 |
Who is gonna close games for these Cincinati Reds? Hoover seems to be stinking up the joint. |
12:49 |
: Dark horse for me is Parra, because he has the weapons to get guys on both sides of plate out, but I think it’s still Hoover. Can’t be LeCure.
|
12:49 |
In Otto how would you rank Appel, Butler and Skaggs long-term? |
12:49 |
: Butler Appel ….. Skaggs
|
12:49 |
You didn’t wear sweatpants in your newest interview with Votto, did you? That would’ve been awkward |
12:49 |
We’re food. And people! |
12:50 |
Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa IM A SHEEP |
12:50 |
: Phew, need to finish of a real interlude.
|
12:50 |
Eno, as far as Indians RP Vinnie Pesto’s comeback, should we expect him to be back to form…maybe even a closer option? |
12:50 |
: I’m picking him up in the deepest of leagues as a possible closer, yes.
|
12:50 |
Who signs freakin’ Drew? Dodgers? Sox? Yankees? …anyone? |
12:50 |
: Tigers
|
12:50 |
Who will be the first closer shuffled out this year? Janssen? |
12:50 |
: I like that one, due to injury though.
|
12:51 |
So is this the year Lawrie puts it together? |
12:51 |
: I kinda do. Love that he had that terrible K rate, went to minors, and came back to a 15% strikeout rate. That makes me believe he can have above-average contact with above-average power, which makes for good batting averages. .280/18/15 is reasonable.
|
12:51 |
Arcia, Garcia or K. Davis in a dynasty league? |
12:52 |
: Davis for me. Right park for his skills, and I believe in his power because we’ve seen it and it’s not as much on faith as it is with Garcia.
|
12:52 |
For my fantasy league that uses quality starts instead of wins, I used a projection engine that only outputs wins when drafting. Will I be okay? |
12:52 |
: I guess, I’d probably bump good pitchers on bad teams up a bit.
|
12:52 |
Why does Beergraphs rely upon crowd sourced tasting notes for its quality rankings ? As a professional wine taster ,I know that the public has no palate at all . |
12:53 |
: Because BG is based on data. Bigger the better.
|
12:54 |
:
|
12:54 |
Are there more fans or graphs on fangraphs? |
12:54 |
: Haven’t seen many fans… but if you mean baseball fans, definitely more of them.
|
12:54 |
Over/under Giancarlo Stanton games played in 2014: 136? |
12:54 |
: Over!
|
12:55 |
How much better than MARCEL are projection systems like ZiPS and STEAMER? Is root mean squared error the best way to measure this? |
12:55 |
: I think it’s a decent way to measure it, and those new ones are better on the measure of millimeters.
|
12:55 |
in SV+HLD, K/9 league, you got Nate Jones or Kelvin Herrera? |
12:56 |
: You know, guys that get saves get more saves than holds! So, I’m tempted to take Kelvin, but he might only get 25 holds, and Jones as a closer should be a 30+ guy.
|
12:56 |
Bovada has the Yankees’ O/U at 86.5. Where do you stand on that? Thanks! |
12:56 |
: over
|
12:56 |
We hear catcher is deep this year, so I’m waiting. Who should I grab for $1? |
12:56 |
: Ramos, Gomes, Castro, Miguel Montero.
|
12:56 |
How are you doing in your NCAA basketball pools this year? |
12:57 |
: Didn’t do one!
|
12:57 |
Smoak might be proof of life after death |
12:57 |
Sometimes when I type the word “fantasy” Into my computer baseball does not appear, But other “naughty” content that I will not disclose here. |
12:57 |
: My first website was Fantasy Lounge Sports and the Fantasy Lounge is well yeah.
|
12:57 |
How many saves do you expect JJ Hoover and LaTroy Hawkins to get this season? |
12:58 |
: 10 at most.
|
12:58 |
Who do you think will get the bulk of playing time at 2B for the Orioles this season? |
12:58 |
: Schoop?
|
12:58 |
Chris Archer or Rick Porcello for this year? |
12:58 |
: Porcello.
|
12:58 |
Eno – do you like your eggs odorizzi? |
12:58 |
By spelling |
12:59 |
![]() CAN I GET A HELL YA!? |
12:59 |
Eno, really enjoyed the Mejia write up. Had him last year based off some Fangraphs advice (maybe yours??) and was extremely pleased….until he got hurt. Would you rather have him or Erasmo on your roster right now (assuming he gets the spot over Dice-K)? Thanks. |
12:59 |
: yes
|
12:59 |
Where should Jose Quintana be drafted in a 12-team mixer this year? |
12:59 |
: Late but drafted. 15-20 rounds.
|
12:59 |
Can’t you see Ike going .270/30/85, just to drive us all nuts? |
12:59 |
: .240/30 I’ll take as possible.
|
12:59 |
I drafted Cole and Salazar 43rd and 91st, resptively. Too early, right? Rest of rotation is Fister, Zimmermann, and Lester. |
1:00 |
: Cole on the borderline but I actually like your rotation.
|
1:00 |
Do you think Andrew Heaney will be significant this year? i have him in a keeper league. |
1:00 |
: I think he’ll pitch and be usable but his upside is muted.
|
1:00 |
What was playoff scene funnier – the fielder belly flop in the playoffs last year or the Yankees (particularly joba chamberlain) getting beat my bugs in Cleveland in 2800750? |
1:00 |
: I loved that belly flop.
|
1:01 | : also this was great |
1:01 |
Do you think it’s likely Cobb breaks through and becomes a top 15 SP in 2014, exceeding Price in fantasy value? |
1:02 |
: I’m not sure there’s much more upside but I do like Cobb to stay about the same, and Price is post peak by now.
|
1:02 |
I’m having trouble finding Erasmo’s spring velocity, is there a good source for that stuff? |
1:03 |
http://www.brooksbaseball.n… he was one of the few to pitch in a PFx stadium. Otherwise, Jeff Zimmerman’s twitter feed www.twitter.com/jeffwzimmerman is good, he tweets them out.
: 92 |
1:03 |
what do you expect from josh Johnson this year? Rosterable in a 12 team mixed league? |
1:03 |
: Already hurt again. I’m doubting him.
|
1:03 |
What are you thoughts on Hanley Ramirez? I mean, I know he’s no Lucas Duda when it comes to Global Awesomeness, but what do you think he does this year? Gut feeling here Eno, this is Baseball afterall. |
1:03 |
: Top 25 talent when in the lineup, out of the lineup for 15 days at least once.
|
1:04 |
I listen the sleeper and the bust every morning in the shower. Your voice is very soothing as the water hits my back. |
1:04 |
: Weird. And the ums, they don’t bother you?
|
1:04 |
Isn’t it idiotic to make teams play real games and then have 3 exhibitions? You don’t have to answer that, we all know it’s dumb. |
1:04 |
Im behind in my movies. Should I go see the lego movie today or muppets most wanted? |
1:04 |
: heard the lego one was good, have been to like two movies since my son was born
|
1:04 |
This one time, at fantasy baseball camp… |
1:04 |
DID U SEE DUSTIN MCGOWANS PITCH FX!!! 4 PITCHES ABOVE AVERAGE |
1:04 |
: talent wasn’t *really* his problem
|
1:05 |
In a S+H league, who are some under the radar number rackers? |
1:05 |
: Kelley, Farquhar, B Wilson, Walden, Putz.
|
1:05 |
I’m having trouble figuring out a good way to allocate my 1400 IP limit. My SP is Sale, Gio, Cashner, Kuroda, Latos. RP Reed, Qualls, Brothers, Santos, Farquhar, Melancon. Think I’ll need to stream any or need an extra starter? 12 teamer. |
1:06 |
: Yeah you’ll need a little more I think or be in trouble in wins. Might be able to get there with streaming, if you stay on top of it.
|
1:06 |
Eno- Can you rank these presumably $1 Catchers? |
1:06 |
: I did. Put them in order.
|
1:06 |
When are you coming to cleveland next? I would like to have a drink with you. |
1:07 |
: I’ve heard some good things about beers around there, we’ll see.
|
1:07 |
Lots of chatter around here about whether Carlos Martinez and Rosenthal should be given a chance to start before being relegated to the pen. What do you think? |
1:07 |
: Rosenthal is deeper in that role probably, but has better starting mix. Ship’s sailed on him more than C-Mart. I would have started C-Mart over Kelly despite the fact that C-mart is sinker slider and needs more work on the change. He’ll never throw the change in the bullpen.
|
1:07 |
Eno, can you rank these cheap catchers?Montero/Ruiz/Mesoraco/d’Arnaud/Gomes/Jaso |
1:08 |
: Gomes Montero TDA Mes Jaso
|
1:08 |
Who will produce be the best player this season. Robinson Cano or the combination of Ellsbury and Brian McCann (worth around the same money). |
1:08 |
: To be fair you’d have to add the cheap Almonte or something, since it’s two players instead of one. And that might tip the scales.
|
1:09 |
Love your interviews with players, Eno. Ever thought of trying to catch up with Mark Prior? I knew him freshman year in college, before he transferred to USC. He was a thoughtful and interesting guy. He might make a good subject. |
1:09 |
: Oh great idea. Want to talk a bit about injuries this year too.
|
1:09 |
Eno, better season- Brad Miller or Jose Reyes? |
1:09 |
: Reyes but once you factor in cost…
|
1:09 |
I typed this question in the wrong place like a damn fool but what do make of B. Phillips this year? Is he getting too old, will miss Choo hitting in from of him? |
1:10 |
: yeah and he might not hit 18 homers this year. Stopped stealing really. Batting average was never really good.
|
1:10 |
Would having Christian Yelich in my Utility spot over Will Venable, Alejandro de Aza, or Eric Young give me the best upside at BA and SBs? |
1:10 |
: I’d start Yelich but move Venable in when he’s facing righties, particularly on the road.
|
1:10 |
Dom Brown isnt much different than Beltran, right? If not, what am I missing? |
1:10 |
: health, PA security probably.
|
1:10 |
Have your expectations for Matt Adams changed at all? over/under 430 at bats |
1:10 |
: Over. I still think he pulls the pall too much and the BA will go down.
|
1:11 |
I had Profar on all of my dynasty teams and traded Altuve away on 2 of them just before Profar got hurt . timing is everything . |
1:11 |
: Dang.
|
1:11 |
ballpark beer reviews coming back to beergraphs this year? love ’em! |
1:11 |
: We might need some help to reach more ballparks!
|
1:11 |
Two Catchers walk into an art museum, one looks to the other and says “nice frames” Yadier Molina says “I’ve seen better”. |
1:11 |
or Giddyup? |
1:11 |
![]() Jose Fernandez. Beats our Kershaw this year? |
1:12 |
Do you see the Mets making an in-season move for a power bat? |
1:12 |
: Maybe for a SS or OF, not sure power will be the only concern.
|
1:12 |
What do you think of Matt Dominguez this year? – Over/under 25 HR, 90 RBI |
1:12 |
: I’ll take the slight over on homers, but will need to see how that lineup is and how much contact he makes on the RBI.
|
1:13 |
Re Darvish Injury risk: So would you keep Jose Fernandez over Darvish for this year? |
1:13 |
: Wow, you know, given their ages… it’s not crazy.
|
1:13 |
If you can get Hamels at 60% of his expected cost before injury, are you buying? |
1:13 |
: Sure. I think he could pitch 80% of the season.
|
1:13 |
thoughts on drafting without consideration to BA in a 10-team 5×5? |
1:13 |
: I don’t think you need to punt in ten teamers and if it’s roto I never punt in roto.
|
1:13 |
Why not have Darren O’Day close? |
1:14 |
: Platoon splits on sidearming sinker slider guys.
|
1:14 |
max innings Taylor Jordan and Jenrry Mejia could each pitch this season? |
1:15 |
: Mejia has never bettered 108 so 120 would be a watershed moment. Jordan did 145 last year, so he can get to 170+.
|
1:15 |
Michael Brantley suddenly got fantasy relevant didn’t he? |
1:15 |
: Always was. Just not very exciting.
|
1:15 |
How many KPH do you drive on a typical Autobahn when traffic is light? I was cruising at 160 or so in a VW Golf last year. Felt safe, but probably wasn’t. |
1:16 |
: We had a Fox or some small animal like that, a tiny four-cylinder, packed with all our bags, couldn’t do barely 160 going uphill, but found a good downhill into straightaway and pushed that sucker to 200. I’ve gone 220 in a better car. I love the autobahn.
|
1:16 |
how long before the pirates realize volquez is unfixable? who replaces him? |
1:16 |
: Taillon!
|
1:16 |
Zach Britton is another name to maybe watch for O’s closer, if he doesn’t get traded. |
1:16 |
: If they go sinker baller I think ti’s Webb.
|
1:17 |
ENO!!! You see a step forward from Eovaldi this year? That’s an awfully nice fastball, and an nice park to pitch in. Is his secondary stuff coming along? |
1:17 |
: The slider wasn’t really that great and I don’t think he’ll ever develop a third pitch. I’m skeptical.
|
1:17 |
Dexter Fowler sounds like a chicken serial killer. |
1:17 |
: nice.
|
1:17 |
Hanram or EE? OBP league |
1:17 |
: EE
|
1:17 |
Eno, picked up Calhoun of FA to fill in for Kemp. Will Kemp or Calhoun be on my roster in September |
1:18 |
: Both unless you trade, which, well…
|
1:18 |
Last Thursday I took Nate Jones over Parnell. Can someone inform the Whitesox that I really need him to close? |
1:18 |
: Done.
|
1:18 |
In a fantasy draft, always pick the best available player until a certain position is full, or try to mix it up (i.e. should I pick 5 outfielders in a row if that’s the best available, or should I pick a few and then try to fill in other positions, even if it means picking a weaker player?) |
1:18 |
: There’s often less than a dollar difference for guys at certain points in the draft. So if it’s that close, no, I wouldn’t take my fourth OF over my starting SS.
|
1:19 |
Give Goldschmidt and Liriano to get Salazar, Bumgarner, and B. Moss? League uses OBP and SLG instead of average, and IP and K/9 instead of K. Thanks, Eno! |
1:19 |
: No I think you can find pitching. Keep the best player in deal.
|
1:19 |
Who is #5 starter in DC? Roark or Jordan ? If they want a REAL lefty, maybe Obama ? |
1:19 |
: Jordan for me.
|
1:19 |
Gyorko or hill. What player you taking if both still available? |
1:19 |
: Hill.
|
1:19 |
Rafael Soriano will lose his closer job by the end of June. Get on that Clippard train ya’ll! |
1:19 |
: I think Soriano will be on the DL by the end of June, so I agree. Look at his velocity and swSTR last year.
|
1:20 |
Thoughts on trading away Harper and S. Miller for J. Upton, Bruce, and Cashner in 6×6 OBP league? |
1:20 |
: would have to be a decently deep league (not a ten-teamer where the RL OF that you replace with Bruce is a good player). But in a redraft, yeah I don’t mind this at all.
|
1:20 |
isnt Weaver so overated he is now underated?? he is equivalent to tanaka minus 20 or so kS |
1:21 |
: I mean if I could get him in the 18th maybe I would.
|
1:21 |
What food do you order with your beer at a typical German biergarten? Well… and where are you in Germany when you’re at a typical biergarten? |
1:22 |
: In my mind I’m in East Berlin… i think it’s called … forget the name. anyway, I get my brat and pils and I’m smiling.
|
1:22 |
Lawrie or Castellanos at 3B this year and going forward ? |
1:23 |
: Lawrie. Castellanos had some high K% and low BAs for a supposedly great hit tool.
|
1:23 |
People keep talking like there’s a chance Gausman is a reliever on OD for some reason. With Baltimore’s bullpen situation there’s a 0% chance of that happening barring sudden injury. And they want him starting. |
1:23 |
: So who’s out of the rotation.
|
1:23 |
Give me a paragraph on why Brad Miller will be great this year, so I can hype him up and sell him in a few weeks. I need to start the hype machine in the league on him. |
1:24 |
: I just like his K, BB and power rates. Don’t love him to be crazy good, but .275/15+/15+ works really nicely at SS.
|
1:24 |
Semien stay at 2B when Beckham comes back? If Beckham is healthy, would Semien be the Hose regular 3Bman? |
1:25 |
: If he can do better than 1/30 bb/k (I think he can), maybe he does force his way over to third. He played short too. I think he can get 400+ PA, but long term I think he’s a 2b.
|
1:25 |
I dont like that semien was artificially inseminated into the white sox lineup. |
1:25 |
You seem like an alternative music kind of guy, ever make it out to one of the brand name festivals? |
1:25 |
: Does pitchfork count? I’ll be there again this year most likely. I’ve been to outside lands a couple times.
|
1:25 |
Junior Lake cementing a CF job with his 3 HR spring nugget? |
1:26 |
: Maybe but boy does he look unsure out there defensively. May be a COF if he doesn’t get better at running routes.
|
1:26 |
Is it all downhill for Josh Hamilton at this point? |
1:26 |
: There will be a dead cat bounce, but when?
|
1:26 |
Is Jesse Crain worth a bench spot in a 15 team 2 RP spot league? Will he get the closer job if he could come back healthy? |
1:26 |
: I’d stash him on the DL if it didn’t cost you a real player.
|
1:26 |
Any type of brews that should hard poured? |
1:27 |
: Mostly stouts and porters. Particularly anything nitro.
|
1:27 |
Mets going to have last ranked pen? or 29th to match their rotation?? Woooo, good times in Queens!! Thank goodness for the all-star FO the Mets have!! |
1:27 |
: I’ll take the over on last-ranked rotation. Montero and Syndergaard will pitch some this year.
|
1:27 |
Morales… might Texas be a fit, if they find a way to jettison Moreland? Where the hell is this guy going to play ball in ’14? |
1:28 |
: Pittsburgh?
|
1:28 |
A lot of people are down on Chris Tillman this year. However, the majority of his numbers have been trending in the right direction, and he’s only 25. Do you think it has more to do with the A.L. East cloud hanging over his head, or is it more of the Orioles recent (non)history of developing pitching? |
1:29 |
: His pitches leave me cold on paper. I love the way the curve looks, but I think people see it coming. It gets a great ground-ball rate but no whiffs. His fastball is decent not great for whiffs. And that’s all the nice I can say about him. Cutter is meh, Change is bad.
|
1:30 |
Top American Pale Ales…? Do they all use cascade hops? |
1:31 |
: Right now Mosaic is hot, especially for dry-hopping. APAs… Daisy Cutter, Dale’s, Alpine’s Hoppy Birthday, Zombie Dust, I like the Go-To from Stone.
|
1:31 |
i clearly screwed up taking cargo third overall right? |
1:31 |
: I woulda taken Goldy, but you weren’t far off.
|
1:31 |
Will anyone trade me anything remotely useful for Willingham? It’s an 18-teamer so he must have at least #4 or 5 starter trade value right? |
1:32 |
: Gotta wait until they playing.
|
1:32 |
Does Pivo count as a German-style pils? Seems too hoppy to me. |
1:32 |
: you know another German-style pils on the west coast?
|
1:32 |
I don’t have a question, just wanted to say I had my draft last night and have been staring at the draft results all day. I love baseball |
1:32 |
: I do this too.
|
1:33 |
I’m sitting on Bonifacio but ogling Bernadina as a sleeper bench bat. Could Bernadina really be the good side of the LF platoon in Cincy? I’ve always liked his speed/pop potential way more than the Nats did. Thoughts? |
1:33 |
: I don’t think Boni is something to worry about losing, even if I doubt Bernadina.
|
1:33 |
Have you ever had any beers made by Troeg’s? Brewed in Harrisburg, PA… not sure if you can get it out west. They have an amazing imperial amber called Nugget Nectar. Really excellent–and I don’t tend to like amber beers. |
1:33 |
: love the Nectar, that was really excellent.
|
1:33 |
am i crazy for expecting a 20/20 year out of grady sizemore? |
1:34 |
: Yeah I think he’ll miss too much time for that.
|
1:34 |
I know MLB merchandising is a little absurd sometimes (see: a Official Licensed Hat for every freaking day of the year), but Nike just released an NFL gear collection specifically for Johnny Manziel’s pro day |
1:34 |
I’ve had the best statistical team two consecutive years (thanks to Fangraphs), but haven’t won either one, how do i fix this?! |
1:34 |
: H2H? Get a roto team.
|
1:34 |
how do you feel about Puig and Harper? I group them together because they are young power speed threats that both have potential to unlock. I don’t want to pay too much for potential. Are either safe bets? |
1:34 |
: They both a little expensive at the end of the first round. in the third, I’d take Puig for sure.
|
1:35 |
Is Matt Dominguez a decent 3B keeper going forward? |
1:35 |
: 14+ teams I hope.
|
1:35 |
Who has the most zazz out of Quintana, Porcello and Haren? Any of them excelling or lacking in zazz? |
1:35 |
: Q has been unzazzy this spring, but I liked him best going into season. Porcello’s new infield D zazz was stolen by injury, to some extent.
|
1:36 |
What kind of production do you see from Khris Davis? Would your recommendation change in a league that also counts OBP? |
1:36 |
: He’s a good OBP guy, good walk rates in minors. the only thing I don’t know is how much power he’ll show against righties. If only league average, he may only hit 20-25 homers. Still useful in most leagues, with upside beyond.
|
1:36 |
Is Dave Cameron punishing you by making you do the RP team previews? |
1:36 |
: good god 4500 words
|
1:36 |
in an 11 team league (don’t laugh), how rough shape am I in with Brad Miller at SS and Dozier at MI? should i upgrade using OF depth? I have Cargo, Harper, Holliday, Jackson, Aoki with Arcia available on the wire. |
1:37 |
: That’s my MI in 12-team AL-only LABR, but I don’t think it’s terrible. I bet you have great other positions. I think they can both be top 12, so you’re close. Wait and see.
|
1:38 |
If you’re confident in your streaming abilities, how do you feel about Salazar/Wood/Kluber/Ross/Jansen/Holland/Rosenthal/Perkins/Robertson/Soria/Jones with a spot to stream and a plan to trade a couple relievers for a starter? |
1:38 |
: if you focus on it, you’ll be fine.
|
1:38 |
Do you drink Guinness in Jamaica? Or do you have a favorite local beer there? |
1:38 |
: Guinnes extra foreign stout is the guinnes they drink, and it’s kinda sludge. I may just go with lime daquiris.
|
1:39 |
Eno…just wanted to let you know…I still remember the day we met. It was an article from Rotoworld’s 2010 pre-season magazine….and you broke down the correlation of every stat to Roto finish. I haven’t paid for steals since. |
1:39 |
: hahah
|
1:39 |
: Like a love story.
|
1:39 |
: fantasy fantasy
|
1:39 |
Moustakas, freese Dominguez or ashe as s last resort 3b? |
1:39 |
: Pick two. Moose and Dominguez.
|
1:39 |
What are your thoughts on all those old, possibly washed up SPs going later? (CC, josh johnnson, CJ Wilson, etc.) I’ve enjoyed drafting them. |
1:40 |
: I’m surprised I don’t have a couple more shares of CC where he’s going. Wilson’s okay. JJ makes me nervous.
|
1:40 |
when i’m talking online i even type “yeah,” before everything i say so it’s totally understandable |
1:40 |
: see
|
1:40 |
Evan Meek has 3 saves this spring for Baltimore. If he makes the 25 man roster, is he next in line after Tommy goes boom? |
1:41 |
: I thought he was in the Tigers’ pen lol. he didn’t throw an MLB pitch last year and was trying to start. Could be, I guess.
|
1:41 |
vinnie pesto or chuck marinara ? |
1:41 |
: pesto every time
|
1:41 |
If there was a category for most weakly hit balls in play/not squaring the ball up, I’d pick Avisail Garcia first overall. |
1:41 |
But if Beergraphs data is crap ,its conclusions are also crap |
1:42 |
: I have more respect for the average palate than you, I guess. I haven’t been trained, drank a lot of craft beer in the last three years and feel like I can taste the rainbow now.
|
1:42 |
I noticed the ”yeaaaah” too, but don’t mind it. Kinda funny and we can put it on t-shirts. Do you Eno, do you. |
1:42 |
I see that you are digging in on disbelief of Ventura. Let’s remember to revisit that in a few months, k? |
1:43 |
: Sat with a major league player who couldn’t look away from his cheese, so yeah I could be wrong. But I don’t really like his offspeed stuff. I still smell a bit of reliever on him.
|
1:43 |
I hate randomly judging people but whenever someone starts a sentence with “As a professional wine taster”, I immediately picture them in an unflattering way. Also I lied, I really love judging people based on little to no information or context |
1:43 |
Is Marte worth the $31 he just signed for? |
1:44 |
: Great defender in COF is a weird package, and we’ll see if he continues to avoid the pop-up and float his OBP with great BABIP, but I’m optimistic. He has some pop too and there’s a lot to like about his game if you don’t get down on the flaws.
|
1:44 |
I am going to draft Miller, Almonte, Semien, Carrasco and Sergio Santos tonight because of you. Do you think I’ll be disappointed? 🙂 |
1:44 |
: Really hope you’re in a deep league lol.
|
1:44 |
How is my springcrush Schoop doing? Sounds like they’ll do the right thing by either playing him daily with the O’s, or in triple A. |
1:45 |
: And then there’s also talk he’ll be platooned lol.
|
1:45 |
Can we get a graphical breakdown of various fans? Like oscillating vs. box style and get some replacement levels for each variety? Thanks Eno! |
1:45 |
: puts down on list. scratches it out. stars it.
|
1:45 |
Wealthy Cypriot Baseballer, I play in a league that uses both QS and Wins. I 100% ignored decisions in my preseason rankings last year, as well as in my midseason running rankings. As in I didn’t even carry the data in my spreadsheet. I chased the other pitcher scoring, and ended up winning decisions anyway. JUST SAY NO TO DECISION PREDICTIONS! |
1:45 |
how do I get a beer/brewery submitted to BeerGraphs? |
1:45 |
: check in to it on Untappd. We have a 25 check in minimum.
|

Derek Norris a nice long shot at catcher for AL only league? He’s having a great spring and he was a masher in the minors. |
1:46 |
: yeah he’s my AL-LABR guy. Worst case he mashes against lefties for 300 PA.
|
1:46 |
So you don’t think playing without an infield is going to hold down the Yankee wins this year ? |
1:46 |

1:48 |

Am I worthy of a DL stash? My shoulder hurts and I didn’t get a ton of at-bats last year. |
1:49 |
: Yes. You’re the starter when youre back.
|
1:49 |
Mejia isn’t getting spot over DiceK tho. At least not until super two service time issue passes |
1:50 |
: They just paid $100k to DiceK to retain his rights as a minor leaguer. Mejia gets one more spring start to make case, and if Niese starts on DL, he gets a reg season start. And two more starts falling asleep during DiceK will do the damage. Also, Mejia’s clock is already started so super two not much of a concern.

Hi Eno!! Found one of the few places in Mass that serve the Heady Topper avl. Paying over 400% mkt px but whatever. Worth every last drop. How do you feel about Mauer in a pts league where single/BB/run/RBI=1pt,double=2pts… and KO= -0.5 pts? Projected to score in the top 5 1B. You like as if he was a Heady? Thx |
1:55 |
: That’s a great scoring system for him. Obviously don’t get too excited, but third round pick to be your catcher in this format is pretty sexy. Not quite Heady.
|
1:55 |
did Maxamuz ask a legit fantasy question? |

1:56 |
Are you a Brian Dozier fan? I would like to draft but am concerned |
1:56 |
: I do like him. .245/15/15 is a decent baseline for MI. If he can fix the popups or is just more aggressive and swings more, he can push that to .260/270.

With a phone full of pictures of pitchers' fingers, strange beers, and his two toddler sons, Eno Sarris can be found at the ballpark or a brewery most days. Read him here, writing about the A's or Giants at The Athletic, or about beer at October. Follow him on Twitter @enosarris if you can handle the sandwiches and inanity.
Hi Eno – What do make of B. Phillips this year? Is he getting too old, will miss Choo hitting in from of him?
I can make a broach, or a pterodactyl……..
Get that finger out of your ear! You don’t know where that finger’s been!
