Eno Sarris: It’s a familiar move for pitchers that aren’t getting it done with the fastball. Dillon Gee had some success with that move too. Pitching backwards in a way. I’d be more excited about it in the NL. But at least his home park is nice.

Eno!!!! I landed Tanner Scheppers in my AL-only auction a few weeks back assuming he’d give me some great relief numbers. Now that he’s a starter, I have no idea what to make of him. Should I roll the dice and find out, or try and trade him now to a member of my league who is a much bigger believer of his starting abilities? On a side note, how many pitchers can say that their first career start turned out to be the season opener? Thanks for your time!

Eno Sarris: yeah this is a strange moment. I know some people doubt Scheppers, and we’ll have to see what his velocity will look like as a starter, but he’s very close to being a capable starter. His change gets 12% whiffs and better than 50% grounders, so it’s just a tweak away from average. His curve and fastballs are great. I might keep him.

It’s looking more and more like Nate Jones is a right handed version of Matt Thornton – a guy that throws heat but very straight. That tends to play better in the 8th inning versus closing. Thoughts on Matt Lindstrom winning the closing gig?

Eno Sarris: At least Jones’ offspeed stuff beats Thornton’s. And in terms of peripherals, only David Robertson matched a 10+k/9, 3-bb/9, 50+% GB last year. I love love Jones.

Eno Sarris: Don’t spend too much time throwing guys you don’t want. At some point, you need to throw guys that are crucial to your decision trees. In other words. If you’re planning on going cheap at catcher, at some point you need to throw the cheap catchers you like to make sure you can get a cheap catcher and don’t need to adjust. Also, I hate most $1 hitters in that kind of setup.

Eno Sarris: Not sure about that yet. His command is iffy. He has the pitches, but if they are all average or barely above, he might just be average. I’m touting him as a deep leaguer for now. But before I say he has no elite pitch… 25% on the slider is pretty damn good.

I love the guy, but do the Jays really think Dustin McGowan can handle SP innings for the whole season, or are they just throwing him out there to bide time for a trade, Stroman callup, or one of Romero/Happ to figure out how to pitch again? The last time Dusty pitched over 100 innings in a year in ANY level was 2008!

Eno Sarris: It’s the same question as spending more than your values. I try to never do that. Maybe I’ll spend an extra buck on an elite guy to make sure I buy into the elite guys, but.. Do a mock. Never reach. See how you get sad, but then find a great guy at a great value at that position later, and your team is better for it.

Eno Sarris: Decently. I’ll reserve judgement on Darvish, but I had him pegged as one of the bigger injury risks because he was on DL last year, throws tons of sliders, and doesn’t have a great walk rate. And this neck thing could be related to his trapezius issues last year.

Eno Sarris: It’s not about changes, it’s about the fact that his pitches already have good movement and get whiffs. His change, slider and curve all get average or above whiffs, and his sinker gets 60% gbs. Hits all the right notes. Just needs better command.

A lot of people are down on Chris Tillman this year. However, the majority of his numbers have been trending in the right direction, and he’s only 25. Do you think it has more to do with the A.L. East cloud hanging over his head, or is it more of the Orioles recent (non)history of developing pitching?

1:29	Eno Sarris: His pitches leave me cold on paper. I love the way the curve looks, but I think people see it coming. It gets a great ground-ball rate but no whiffs. His fastball is decent not great for whiffs. And that’s all the nice I can say about him. Cutter is meh, Change is bad.

Eno Sarris: They just paid $100k to DiceK to retain his rights as a minor leaguer. Mejia gets one more spring start to make case, and if Niese starts on DL, he gets a reg season start. And two more starts falling asleep during DiceK will do the damage. Also, Mejia’s clock is already started so super two not much of a concern.
