Eno Sarris: I’m thinking of a linear regression to solve the Jarrod Parker / Martin Perez problem. I’m wondering if a great change doesn’t always lead to great strikeout rates. Need to find the right way to weight each pitch type. Perez has a great sinker and a great change but nothing that cuts.

Eno Sarris: Same as it was going in: much better at this velocity. Great curve. Change not as good as I thought, but not bad. Control not great. Borderline mixed leaguer but good.

Eno Sarris: He’s trying to stay down in the zone and get more grounders. And given his homer rate, I can’t fault him too bad. I think he also needs to change up the order of his pitches. He’s too predictable.

Eno Sarris: His career high is 108 I think, so you’ll win that bet. Unfortunately, not many of the stouts I like come in cases. Left Hand Milk Stout? You may have an angry friend depending on the price. Sam Smith Organic is a little cheaper, but you’ll have to negotiate a volume cause it comes in mini-bombers.

Hey Eno are there any split half reliability studies for plate discipline stats for hitter/pitchers, I would assume swing strike and swing% would stabilize quicker just not sure how much relative to K%, BB%?

Eno Sarris: Swing rates for batters stabilize around 100 PA, but the rest is guessing for me. I’m guessing that reach rates (which have a different denominator, not ALL pitches, but all pitches outside the zone) take a bit longer. I haven’t seen it for pitchers.

Obviously an 1.146 OPS isn’t sustainable, but would it be wise to hold onto Charlie Blackmon over Alex Rios and Dom Brown?

Eno Sarris: .270/20/10 still possible for Brown, Rios more .275/15/20, I’d call Blackmon a .300/12/25 guy full season. Looks like Brown might be a dropper/trader in this situation, but with his value down, I’d look to trade Rios.

Hey Eno, tried to mirror Ottoneu scoring in an ESPN league, but didn’t limit pitchers per roster. Guys are exploiting the system with 12+ SP, because they yield the most points (average pitcher > elite position player). Should I retroactively drop pitching points to lessen the spread advantage? Thoughts?

Eno Sarris: Hard to do that in-season unless you have 100% agreement from the league.

Eno Sarris: But I would think about it for the future, so bring it up now.

Eno Sarris: I don’t depend on trades because people often don’t trade enough, so if he couldn’t crack my lineup, I’d probably use the spot on upside at a position of need (like SP?)

Trevor Plouffe’s plate discipline #s have improved across the board (with BB% from 6.5 to 14.3 and K% from 21.5 to 18.7) and most all his batted ball profile seems on par with career #s. Pitching has obviously been more dominant over recent years. Everyone points to the absence of steroid usage. That doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. What makes more sense is the increased usage of infield/outfield shifts and how much easier it is now to predict what a hitter will do than it was 15 years ago. Video and scouting is much more advanced and readily available. Thoughts?

Eno Sarris: Yeah they probably did steroids on both sides of the ball, you’re right. Velocity is also up. I think the trend towards using younger pitchers, given the fact that velocity only declines in the big leagues, means fewer runs. Plus the things you cite.

What does a guy on the 40 man make while he’s playing in the minors. For example, Anthony Gose gets called, makes league min while he’s up then gets sent down. When he’s in AAA does he make whatever the basic AAA salary is, same as everyone else even though he’s on the 40 man?

Eno Sarris: 1.) No. 2) I’d take it. Morneau is a bench bat you plug into util vs RHP and at home, Teheran is an every-starter.

You often mention the per-pitch metrics stabilizing before the PA metrics. Makes sense intuitively, but is that an assumption or has there been work done to support that? Is it possible that the per-pitch metrics take just as long as PA metrics, since they are correlated?

Eno Sarris: In batting, the first metric to stabilize is swing%, which is per-pitch. It’s also just a bigger sample than per-PA, and bigger samples are always good.

Oh Yasiel. He’s really starting slow. Feel like everyone is jumping ship – am I wrong to be in the 30/15/.290 group on him? Just needs to keep adjusting and settling in. If Carlos Gomez is suddenly a top 10 OF, there is absolutely no reason yasiel isn’t.

Just look at his Swstr and k rates, and he’s still hitting the crap out of the ball. I have him down as an outsider in the NL MVP race. Am I crazy?!

Eno Sarris: I’m guessing, but I think reach rates take closer to 150 PA. But it’s great to see he’s doing the right things in that regard. If these swing rates held, he could hit for a good enough BA to actually be in that race. I mean, his reach rate is average right now! Average!

Eno Sarris: One thing I’d say is that Colon is not going to be a problem. Two years, that money, they can release him and the smell of the fart would dissapate quickly. Obviously Granderson is Bay-like, but Bay money now is like 75% as valuable as Bay money then (bad math, just guessing) because year to year inflation is like 10% in baseball. So yeah, slightly Omar-like with Grandy, but tons of pressure to spend money … and from my comments on my grandy piece, you were not alone.
