Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 6/12/14
11:47 |
: hey now
|
11:47 |
|
11:47 |
: but we’ll start mellow

The only difference between 2014 me and career me is my sub-5% HR/FB rate. Will I continue to be good, or will I go back to career me? |
12:00 |
|
12:00 |
I have your podcast on…it’s weird to hear your voice while I also type to you… |
12:00 |
: I’m everywhere.
|
12:00 |
LET’S GET READY TO RUUUUUUUUUUUMBLE |
12:01 |
DL-stint aside, Is it time to cut bait on Tyler Skaggs? |
12:01 |
|
12:01 |
: Skaggs’ reduced strikeout rate and meh change have me thinking he was a good deeper league pickup but doubting his overall upside. Risk of bad command coming back too.
|
12:01 |
Hi Eno! Hope you’re having a stellar week. I was curious to hear your thoughts on Eugenio Suarez, and the likelihood he can be a productive fantasy player going forward. Thanks! |
12:02 |
: At least he makes a lot of contact, more than Danny Santana when I last looked.
|
12:02 |
Hi Eno…are there any high upside pitchers that should get the call up this month that you think could be a top 50 pitcher the rest of the way? Thanks! |
12:02 |
: Yeah, Meyer and Heaney. Marlins are closer than they/we expected.
|
12:02 |
IMPORTANT: My grocery store has all craft been on sale this weekend. What Boulevard brew should I look for? I’m not a fan of overly bitter beers. |
12:02 |
: Saison Brett, Rye on Rye.
|
12:03 |
Looking for a DL stash. Best per game value (looking for quality not quantity) from the time they come off DL: Hart (late June), Gyorko (early July), Gee (end of June), Paxton (mid July), Nate Jones (mid July), Crain (early July), Henderson (end of June) |
12:03 |
: Hart or Gyorko have the best upside. Might depend on where your lineup has space if they get good.
|
12:03 |
![]() USA! USA! |
12:03 |
I’m below the Mendoza line over the last 30 days and am under .230 for the season with 4% walks, what gives?! |
12:03 |
: Returned to his pre-Florida contact rate is mostly it.
|
12:03 |
Is my R. Zimmerman for his Cargo a no brainer? |
12:03 |
: YES
|
12:03 |
I know I started off real shaky, but I’ve converted three straight save opportunities, knocking em down 1-2-3 in the first two chances, and allowing a run last time out. Have I solidified my standing as White Sox closer yet? |
12:04 |
: I thought you had it in the bag from the beginning. That team doesn’t need to make their young guys expensive.
|
12:04 |
|
12:04 |
so it sure seems like a replay call might have been botched in the mets/brewers game last night. |
12:04 |
: Have seen a couple! Still humans!
|
12:04 |
Ryan Zimmerman isn’t hopeless in left? Sure, there’s not even a parallel universe where he makes a Cespedes-type throw, but he’s been better than expected, yes? |
12:04 |
: Made some nice plays last night.
|
12:04 |
Hey Eno. I put Hosmer on the block in a dynasty sim league. The best offer I got is Wong. Should I pull the trigger or hold? |
12:04 |
|
12:05 |
What’s up Eno |
12:05 |
: sup dude
|
12:05 |
everyone was waiting patiently for….this??? |
12:05 |
: Well I’m pretty sure he can hit .250.
|
12:05 |
If you had a choice to keep a pitcher in 2015 only, Harvey or Hamels, who would you choose if you had to decide by end of summer, and why? Thanks! |
12:05 |
|
12:05 |
Ludes: Brian Eno did them first. Eno Sarris did them better. |
12:05 |
: Favorited.
|
12:06 |
let’s boogie |
12:06 |
: ok
|
12:06 |
:
|
12:06 |
|
12:06 |
Think Kevin Gausman sticks in the rotation provided he puts in a decent start tonight against the Jays? |
12:06 |
: Yes. I hate to put this too much on one game, but it’s pretty huge. Toronto is on fire. If he can keep them muzzled, they’ll notice.
|
12:07 |
Don’t get me wrong, I’m enjoying watching Abreu hit homers off Cy Young winners, but you think he’s going to boost his BB% during the course of this season? Also, can the White Sox build around Sale and Abreu to be competitive for the next 3-4 years? |
12:07 |
: They sort of have a short window, provided by those two. I don’t think Abreu will be a huge walk rate guy, but we’ll see. They have enough that they could make the rebuild quick, and the Santiago trade was amazing.
|
12:08 |
What’s up Eno? Gotta eventually get rid of a SP to make room for CarGo when he comes off the DL. That said, would you trade Wacha, Kluber, and Choo for Hamels and Braun? |
12:08 |
|
12:08 |
![]() mind. blown. |
12:08 |
Eno, thanks for all your work on the consensus rankings! That has to be a giant pain in the arse. |
12:08 |
: Oh yes.
|
12:08 |
ENOOOOOO! Sooooo, Verlander’s velocity (both average and max) has been UP his past two starts, but obviously the results still aren’t there. Do you think this suggests better days are ahead, or is he just reaching back and trying to pump gas at the expense of control/command/overall effectiveness? |
12:08 |
: I don’t know, but I’ve stopped looking for sell low offers given the new velocity. Time to hold.
|
12:08 |
Can your musical tastes beat CCR + Weird Al + VNV Nation? |
12:08 |
(That’s classic rock + parody + “futurepop”) |
12:09 |
: Well, we’ll see. But Weird Al certainly shakes things up.
|
12:09 |
Sorry for the multiple posts – Altuve & Doolittle for Marte & Gio. Which side do you want? |
12:09 |
: Normally I’d take the Marte Gio side, but Altuve is legit and a top-two or three 2B, which is probably the best asset in the deal.
|
12:09 |
How many WAR is my throwing arm worth? |
12:09 |
: Not that many. Look at Jeff Francouer.
|
12:10 |
I know Machado made a HUGE mistake, but I feel everyone hates him now. I know he threw the bat and it is dangerous and all, but be didn’t charge the mound, bat in hand trying to beat the pitcher to a pulp with it, and I feel that is how everybody is reacting to it as if he did just that. Honestly, he just flailed the bat over there. Still a very poor call on his part, but it is not life threatening like everybody is making it out to be. I made poor judgement calls when I was 21 too. People need to lighten up although I do agree it is a serious situation, just not as serious as everyone is making it out to be. Thoughts? |
12:10 |
: I was more upset by smirking at the catcher after hitting him. But he’s a young dude and he can learn. He’s also hitting the first bad stretch of his career, in a way, so let’s see what happens now.
|
12:10 |
With Waino hurt is it finally time for Carlos Martinez to start? What would you expect from him as a starter ROS? |
12:10 |
: I think that boat has sailed. You’ll see someone come up from minors I bet.
|
12:11 |
eno, what do you do about a competitive league where no one wants to make trades that aren’t obviously lopsided in their favor? trades NEVER happen, but there are plenty of offers being made. |
12:11 |
: Trades are super hard in all leagues. I try to gauge the league and my team right. Sometimes I overpay just to get what I need. Screw what they think. Just be careful, or the offers will get worse.
|
12:11 |
Is Soria going to close the rest of the year, or is Feliz going to be back and assume the roll? Also: how would you rank these closers for the rest of the year: Soria, Nathan, Rodriguez, Rodney? |
12:12 |
: Soria’s golden. Number one on your list. K-Rod second. Rodney and Nathan have problems, but at least Rodney’s throwing gas.
|
12:12 |
granderson has turned it around tremendously over the last month. the power seems to be back |
12:13 |
: Power takes the longest to know. I thought he looked okay all along. And what I said about him not being Bay — that he has more athleticism and that’ll help him to a softer landing — seems more true now. Better LF D than Bay, patience still there. Always will have a bad BA though.
|
12:13 |
Should we just drop Wilson Ramos at this point? Current C is Mesoraco, but Ramos is my 7th guy to hit the DL and I can’t even fill out the starting lineup. |
12:13 |
: I think you can drop him. I hate having two catchers anyway.
|
12:13 |
Driving right through Hershey, gonna drink me some Nugget Nectar. |
12:13 |
: YES
|
12:13 |
Start Gausman tonight against the Toronto baseball crushers? |
12:13 |
: No. Sit and watch.
|
12:13 |
When K-BB lets us down like for McCarthy, what else can we look at to show us that he sucks? |
12:14 |
: No change-up.
|
12:14 |
Weaver is ranked 28th. Archer is ranked 52nd. Discuss |
12:14 |
: Doubt it was like that for me. But they might be opposite pitchers. Archer has command issues, great stuff, bad change. Weaver has a great arsenal, great command, terrible fastball.
|
12:14 |
Do you have a rauchbier you can recommend? |
12:14 |
: Only one I’ve ever liked is Stone’s Smoked Porter with Vanilla.
|
12:14 |
What’s your take on Wong and Odor? |
12:15 |
: Make sure to clean yourself down there.
|
12:15 |
: (I’d rather have Odor, more chance to help in five cats.)
|
12:15 |
Votto ROS over under 80/25/80/300 pace? |
12:15 |
: more runs in pace?
|
12:15 |
I’m 4th in SB, 10th in RBI, 12th in Runs and second in Bsr WAR over the last calendar year but many experts still rate me below guys like Asdrubal, Everth, and Andrelton. What do I have to do to get a lil’ credit? |
12:15 |
: Good year bad year problems. it’s all BABIP to get him on base, too. But I like it.
|
12:16 |
Your thoughts on Robbie Grossman ROS? |
12:16 |
: Deep leaguer, will hold job when Presley loses it. Some power and speed, OBP will come.
|
12:16 |
You like any of the following bands? Linkin Park/Chevelle/Rise Against/Silverstein? |
12:16 |
: No, but the best I can do for you is
|
12:17 |
:
|
12:17 |
Hey Eno. My bullpen sux, but is giving up $5 Leonys for $4 Tommy Hunter the wrong solution? |
12:17 |
: yes. i think Britton could hold it.
|
12:17 |
Verlander or Lackey Rest of way |
12:17 |
: Verlander.
|
12:17 |
Jake Mcgees shot as rays closer? I mean no one else has the velo in that pen to match. |
12:17 |
: I know! But they haven’t done it yet! And Balfour got the last one. I think it’s Balfour or Oviedo.
|
12:17 |
Westbrook Mexican Cake and Prairie Puncheon tonight for tonight’s epic sports night. CAN’T WAIT |
12:17 |
: Hate you.
|
12:17 |
World Cup! |
12:18 |
: I’m psyched but we have to pipe down or people will yell at us.
|
12:18 |
HEY ENO, WHY AREN’T YOU WATCHING MY SHOW MORE OFTEN? IT’S AWESOME! |
12:18 |
: Stop stop please I apologize for whatever it was I did
|
12:18 |
Which young 3 do you want? Mets: Harvey, Wheeler, Syndergaard, Indians: Kluber, Bauer, Salazar? Cardinals: Wacha, Miller, C-Mart…How close/not close is it? |
12:19 |
: Next year, Mets for sure. Because Kluber is more “find” than “stud” still I think. And Indians ‘studs’ have problems. Cards three is killer but one might be an RP. Okay, so Cards / Mets is super close. But remember Harvey.
|
12:19 |
How do you feel about Segura RoS? OPS is an extra category and his .603 is killing me |
12:19 |
: yeah OPS is tough on all shortstops though.
|
12:19 |
Eno, concerned about Bryant’s strikeouts? How are they likely to translate at the next level? Same for Joey Gallo |
12:20 |
: Yes, always concerned. Even on Springer. Really watching Gallo’s Double-A K rate right now.
|
12:20 |
Today’s Sporcle quiz! Actually a double feature. http://www.sporcle.com/game… http://www.sporcle.com/game… |
12:20 |
How long will Lawrie have 2nd eligibility? |
12:20 |
: With Francisco in town? At least another year I guess.
|
12:20 |
Eno, ACBF in Boston, there were some good beers. Left had a ginger infused beer, it was pretty good after. Jack’s Abby was awesome, as you said. Green Flash has a saison aged in red wine barrels, also really good. If i hadn’t had so much beer, I could tell you the names of all of these beers. |
12:21 |
: nice!
|
12:21 |
You think Danny Salazar has got the yips? The Steve Blass disease? The fleas in the brain thing? |
12:21 |
: No, the slider got worse. Looks like he’ll be one of those change-up guys that has trouble with his breaker. Maybe a cutter will be his savior. Command also an issue though.
|
12:21 |
“ENO IT’S ME – YOU! |
12:21 |
: freaky
|
12:21 |
Should I be looking to deal Solarte? |
12:22 |
: I think he can .280/15+ type of stuff. Makes contact, walk rate is good v RHP.
|
12:22 |
I own Kazmir, am 6-14 (12 team mixed h2h, we do doubleheaders) and have an outside chance to make the playoffs (just 2 games back). Someone offered me Gausman for Kazmir (we have 5 keeper maxs). I rejected it and am currently trying to get him to throw in Stroman as well. What do you think of this situation? Is selling the inury-risky Kazmir a good move for those just Gausman, or should I try hard to get stro as well? |
12:22 |
: If you get both, you have two 50/50 shots at a better young pitcher than Kazmir, and then I’d do it.
|
12:22 |
Do you have a good comp for Alex Meyer? And does he matter when he arrives….which is soon right? |
12:23 |
: Dunno, Alex Cobb with more velocity? Curve, Change, no-seam sinker fastball.
|
12:23 |
Much hope for Craig going forward? He rebounded a bit from his awful April but he’s just a singles hitter and doesn’t walk much. |
12:23 |
: .280/18 type. Too many grounders, but the grounders will be good for BA.
|
12:23 |
Chase Whitley better than Phelps? |
12:24 |
: Yes. Love Whitley. Three above-average pitches, even if his fastball is 91 and he’s a converted closer that may only get 120 IP.
|
12:24 |
The Twins have been pretty clear that Meyer will be on an extremely tight innings limit, is there any reason to believe he’ll be a starter in the majors at all this year? |
12:24 |
: Getting his feet wet.
|
12:24 |
Chances Mejia holds onto the closer’s gig? |
12:24 |
: Love love him. He’s got it.
|
12:24 |
Is Sean Doolittle elite Eno? Fastball velo is the same, but location seems better, getting more swings and misses with it. Slider has been better this year as well. He’s pitching like Chapman light, can he keep it up? |
12:25 |
: Gotta do that piece we’ve been planning for so long. Love him as a person and a pitcher. More sliders this year is good. Throws a change-up once a month.
|
12:25 |
marte with 3 straight muli-hit games |
12:25 |
: HIs demise was over-exaggerated. Bad plate discipline but great tools.
|
12:25 |
Which player’s lack of power is most surprising so far: Holliday, Wright, or Cano? |
12:25 |
: None of the above. Wright as outages, Holliday’s getting old and Cano just moved to SafeCo.
|
12:25 |
MATT. DAMON. |
12:26 |
imma quit this job if they keep scheduling meetings during eno chats #priorities |
12:26 |
![]() Did you see the tentacled mass they pulled out from Cargo?!? |
12:26 |
: quality interlude.
|
12:26 |
Time to cut bait with Charlie Blackmon in a shallow league? I’m currently platooning him with Alex Rios and trying to get him in at Coors Field, but Yelich, Khris Davis and Dexter Fowler are available on the wire. Who would you go with? |
12:26 |
: I like that Blackmon/Rios platoon.
|
12:26 |
Is it worth cutting Brian McCann for either Norris or Jaso in an OBP league? |
12:27 |
: Man, I know the shift is killing McCann but it can’t be that time yet. Jaso if you do, because he’s the guy that starts more.
|
12:27 |
For a long time, even back when I played, I wondered how it was that so many pitchers could throw broadly the same pitch at varying levels of success. Since you’ve talked to pitchers often about grips, have you ever thought about what it is that differentiates one pitcher’s curveball from another’s? Is it the feel they have for the pitch that makes one person throw it better than another? |
12:28 |
: Very interesting. Mechanics, deception, unique grips, and maybe command (repeatability of mechanics) seem like things that could differentiate.
|
12:28 |
real talk- who is your dual citizenship rooting for in Group G? The U.S. is the correct answer. |
12:28 |
: I always default to the underdog and Germany is never the underdog.
|
12:28 |
World Cup of Beer final 4? |
12:29 |
: Yeah we should do one, huh.
|
12:29 |
Eno, Rubby has the stuff, makes people look foolish, can he stick in the rotation, or is he a future elite closer? |
12:29 |
: They going to give him as many chances as they can. 5.2 IP is about all you can expect right now though.
|
12:29 |
Asche or Uribe? |
12:29 |
: Asche for sure.
|
12:29 |
Are you looking at any non-prospect propects like Jake Lamb, or Souza to be able to come up and mash? |
12:29 |
: Souza had highest batted ball speed in the AFL. There’s something there.
|
12:29 |
Going to take my 1-year-old to Aberdeen this weekend to see his first baseball game. Someday when he’s older, I hope we can point to all of Dylan Bundy’s Cy Young Awards and say, “Yeah, I saw his first rehab start after his first of many Tommy John surgeries!” |
12:30 |
The player to reader ratio is extremely skewed today, but I’m still me. |
12:30 |
Will Jimmy Rollins regress, or can I expect this type of output from him all season long? |
12:30 |
: Kinda like him to keep it up.
|
12:30 |
Beergraphs related: If my calculations are correct, Tired Hands has released 63 new beers since Feb. 1. |
12:30 |
: All in their tasting room, I believe. So not many check ins on UT. But I’ll take a look.
|
12:31 |
ROS outlook on Heaney? Will there be innings limit? |
12:32 |
: Threw 120 last year, so he could throw 150-160 this year. Strikeout rate going up, added to his polish, and home park, makes me like him more now. Has 80 or so innings left.
|
12:32 |
Whats Eno Sarris’ opinion on cask beer? |
12:33 |
: Love it. Love the way it gives smooth mouthfeel to a crisp hoppy beer. Not for everyone. Do. Not. Like. Cask. Bitters.
|
12:33 |
Did you watch Tyler Matzek last night? I picked him up in a 20 teamer, expecting to drop him the next day but I think I’ll hold on for now. |
12:33 |
: Yeah hold. Control best of his career, has gas.
|
12:33 |
![]() Dropped Yordano and was able to pick him back up on the waiver. I'm surrounded by idiocy. |
12:33 |
HE HIT NORRIS ON THE HEAD WITH HIS BACKSWING TWICE ON PURPOSE!!!!! |
12:34 |
: ‘purpose’ is debatable, but his response to finding out that he had was not good.
|
12:34 |
We need to talk about Josh Tomlin. Can his K-rate stay 2 higher than his career avg? |
12:34 |
: Made a pitching mix change! Dropped his sinker and change. Could McHugh.
|
12:34 |
zach is right! i’m going to go throw some bats at people in a shopping mall now |
12:34 |
Dietrich mashing in New Orleans. I know he was sent down for “defense”, but give me a break, right? |
12:35 |
: He’s not liked by the owner because of the Tino Martinez thing. Never know what that means for him.
|
12:35 |
: Let’s push the tempo.
|
12:35 |
:
|
12:35 |
Saw this throw by Jose Guillen compared to the Cespedes throw. WOW. http://youtu.be/DFAbXnlzZGQ |
12:36 |
Despite being on the Diamondbacks, would you consider Reed a #1 closer? |
12:36 |
: He’s probably at the bottom of the top 15.
|
12:36 |
Ventura’s start yesterday was a thing of beauty. Not a lot of Ks but lots of GBs and a very efficient pitchcount. |
12:36 |
: Was like 15 grounders to 5 flies, that was nice.
|
12:36 |
1400 IP limit – sit Ervin at Coors today? |
12:36 |
: yes.
|
12:36 |
should i be excited i picked up chase anderson off the waiver wire? |
12:36 |
: His slider is decent, his fastball goes 93, and his change is sexcellent.
|
12:37 |
My main man Eno, would you drop J.J. Hardy or Chris Owings for Rougned Odor? |
12:37 |
: Wow, RoS for Hardy is .275/10. Odor can beat that.
|
12:38 |
How do you respond to a guy that consistently sends lopsided trade offers without severing ties? Rejection after rejection and yet the offers seem to worsen. |
12:38 |
: Send an offer back that you’ve thought about and find actually fair for both sides. Show him how you value players.
|
12:38 |
Following up that recent question about Holliday, Wright, and Cano, do you think they each have a good chance to still reach 20 on the year? |
12:38 |
: Yeah that’s not crazy.
|
12:38 |
Neil Ramirez. Will he close for the Cubs this year? |
12:38 |
: Doubt it, but he will get some saves.
|
12:39 |
Should i cut Plouffe free and go with A. Ramirez ROS? |
12:39 |
: I like Plouffe and would do that yes.
|
12:39 |
Dave said yesterday that Adams, Shelby, Martinez, and Piscotty was not enough for Price, what do you think? |
12:40 |
: I respectfully disagree. That’s a great package that hits on their needs pretty well.
|
12:40 |
: Maybe a minor league starter instead of CMart, if he’s just an RP.
|
12:40 |
What can I expect Collin McHugh to do ROS. The recent short outings a cause for concern? |
12:41 |
: Don’t know what his innings situation is. But I do his like mix enough. The change isn’t great, but a curve and a slider and a show-me/grounder change is probably enough.
|
12:41 |
Go Die Mannschaft!!! |
12:41 |
: In the final eight, yes.
|
12:41 |
Re: Segura. Rather have him or Bonifacio rest of the way? Position doesn’t matter in this case |
12:41 |
: Segura
|
12:41 |
Timmy Two Time |
12:42 |
![]() Ronaldo is nasty. |
12:42 |
if it can only be one reason, why was everyone wrong about Tanaka? (I know not everyone was wrong but I want to be provocative, but I’m unwilling to actually stand by that posture). |
12:43 |
: The slider isn’t always there, and when you’re translating stats from Japan, you’re stuck with a small sample size and it’s hard to know if Japanese pitchers are getting better or just the last few were better than translated stats said they would be.
|
12:43 |
rabble rabble…isn’t this a baseball chat?….rabble rabble |
12:43 |
: I see some baseball in there.
|
12:43 |
Thoughts on New Belgium La Folie sour beer? |
12:43 |
: Ooh I liked the brown sour.
|
12:44 |
Thoughts on Eovaldi ROS, innings limit late in year? Legit growth & solid #4 fantasy starter? |
12:44 |
: Threw 130 but he’s 24 and the team might be going for a wild card. I bet they push him to 180 and just skip him a few times.
|
12:44 |
Don’t read too much into how hitters describe pitchers. The Twins once signed Dusty Hughes because Mauer and Morneau said he was nasty. |
12:45 |
: It’s true. Even Pence said it was mostly because he was a reliever.
|
12:45 |
saw that the rotographs crew had ervin santana ranked pretty high but he’s strung together 3-4 pretty bad games. just a speedbump in a good season? |
12:45 |
: I believe in his new change-up.
|
12:45 |
Great article on Hudson. I got to meet him after he went to the Braves and he immediately became one of my favorite players. |
12:45 |
: Oh, it’s up!
|
12:45 |
Natürlich stelle ich keine Fragen, aber das ist egal. |
12:46 |
Was offered Brad Miller for Semien and Villar in an AL-only keeper. Should I accept? |
12:46 |
: Actually, yes. Villar is a stop gap to Correa at best. Semien has K issues, too. Even bad Miller has been k’ing less than those two.
|
12:46 |
Marcell Ozuna, is he just a weaker Adam Jones? plate discipline is a mes but talk about that category juice! |
12:46 |
: He’s similar, just in a bad park for power. Good comp.
|
12:46 |
Thoughts on VOLQUEZ? Looks like he got a bit of velo back. |
12:47 |
: And the framers behind the plate are helping.
|
12:47 |
Is Danny Santana legit? |
12:47 |
: BABIP crash coming. Strikeout rate suggests he’s a .260 hitter.
|
12:47 |
: Let’s see what I got. Feeling mellow. Nobody will be into this, I bet.
|
12:48 |
:
|
12:48 |
Pliny: overhyped or worth the hype? |
12:48 |
: I went for the Pliny, left talking about the sours. But I do like Pliny the Younger. It’s a good triple IPA.
|
12:49 |
Why does WAR rate the Padres pitchers worse than FIP-? Padres pitching is 10th in the majors in FIP-, but 20th in the league in WAR. Is the Padres pitching above average? Or below average? |
12:49 |
: Hmm, maybe FIP- is only league adjusted and not park adjusted. I should know this, but I don’t use FIP- much.
|
12:49 |
Chris Davis finishes with ____ HRs. |
12:49 |
: 33
|
12:49 |
I know prospects aren’t your forte, but would you say Gallo’s top percentile projections are Adam Dunn-like based on what we currently know? |
12:49 |
: Dunn at third is pretty tasty.
|
12:50 |
When do you think Carlos Correa comes up to MLB? He is tearing up High-A. |
12:50 |
: Double-A this year, MLB sometime next year?
|
12:50 |
I know it’s kind of like splitting hairs, but if you had to choose for fantasy purposes, what order would you place Braun, Gomez, and Puig? |
12:51 |
: Great one. Puig’s chance at a good BA and youth puts him first in my book. Gomez next because he seems less risky than Braun.
|
12:51 |
Go back and watch the video. He doesn’t smirk until a full 30 seconds afterwards, and it’s while talking to Adam Jones. Jones probably just said something funny while they were shooting the shit during a downtime. |
12:51 |
: Editing can be funny. And once people are upset, signs are everywhere. Paranoia is a b.
|
12:52 |
I hate owning Matt Kemp as a keeper. Should I be trying hard to sell him right now or wait until he hopefully rebuilds some value? |
12:52 |
: I’m looking at Sal Perez for him, have D Norris in a 12-team dynasty. Seems crazy, but if I got a better offer, I’d do it.
|
12:52 |
: Kemp’s glove and bad plate discipline are starting to get to him.
|
12:52 |
FWIW, since getting demoted, Semien has a 20.9% walk rate and a 9.3% K rate. That’s not a typo. Can any meaning be derived from this? |
12:53 |
: He always had better K rates in minors. I really want him to strike out like 22-24% in majors, he could be a good .260 double-double guy anywhere on infield like that.
|
12:53 |
Eno – who would you rather have in the foreseeable future: Sano, Gallo, Betts or Drew Hutchison? Pick just one. |
12:53 |
: Betts.
|
12:53 |
Are you still bullish on Wil Myers? Is he an attractive buy low candidate in a dynasty league? |
12:53 |
: Real low. I think he can .260/25+ and power is down.
|
12:54 |
Whatcha mean average fastball??! 97 (yeah, tops) with movement isn’t average! |
12:54 |
: The peripherals aren’t great. Below-average swSTR, GB% on his two-seamer.
|
12:54 |
You were high on Lawrie in your rankings – 8th-ranked 2B and 3B. Care to expound? |
12:54 |
: I think he’ll steal some and has some BA coming.
|
12:54 |
is dallas keuchel a legitimate top 15 starter or is he going to come back down to earth? |
12:54 |
: Has all the pitches, seems legit to me.
|
12:54 |
Who makes the Cubs lineup first, Baez or Alcantara? And when? |
12:55 |
: Alcantara has fewer obstacles, his position is right there waiting for him.
|
12:55 |
What is on Hudson’s finger nail in those pictures? |
12:55 |
: Meant to ask tuesday at park, but I couldn’t get him. You can see from grips that the middle finger is prominent in some grips and I think it’s to keep the nail from breaking.
|
12:56 |
Regarding Machado: Any pitcher throwing at a hitter is more dangerous than the speed the bat came out of Machado’s hand towards Donaldson… Just saying. It was slow and he had plenty of time to react if it was actually headed toward him. |
12:56 |
: True, but even as a guy that tries not to shake fingers too much, the game wasn’t great for Machado.
|
12:56 |
Technically speaking, it’s not paranoia, it’s confirmation bias |
12:57 |
: Right. But I try so hard to stay out of that trap and still thought there was immaturity on display.
|
12:57 |
ICH STELLE FRAGEN JETZT UND SIE ANTWORTEN SIE NOCH NICHT! |
12:57 |
: Ich koennte gar nicht alle fragen antwoerten haette ich zehn stunden.
|
12:58 |
Harvey sitting in FA in my keeper league. Can celebrate Strasmas every 5 days next year and Gray for the next 2. Stash and keep him next year? 6 keeper max. |
12:58 |
: Depends on the state of your team and your bench. Bottom half without a DL problem? sure. top three with some DL guys? eh.
|
12:58 |
Heard Peralta was throwing in bullpen in the 9th in case Balfour blew up again. TB seems like last org to drive up price of Mcgee. Isn’t it Peralta next? Why you thinking Oviedo? |
12:59 |
: Oviedo in sixth was weird. Could totally be Peralta. But the way they’ve used Peralta in past suggests to me that if it’s Peralta, Balfour will get job back. Might have already.
|
12:59 |
after swinging strike % what basic stat is best for projecting future K’s |
12:59 |
: velocity
|
12:59 |
nothing wrong with squarepusher, i guess for a while there he was bunched up with all those “trip hop” groups, but he is more versatile and sounds better today |
1:00 |
: I was big into him when I was all about drum and bass and IDM. Still am, but much less so.
|
1:00 |
Am i out of line for thinking about dropping Cain in Ottoneu ? His homer prob is killing me and nobody wants him and i got younger, cheaper and better pitching |
1:00 |
: Hold, don’t cut. I think he can be a good start at home at the very least. Assume you’re talking points where homers are killer.
|
1:00 |
First — I’m toats in love with Dirt Wolf (DIPA) by Victory. Second — Should I hang on to Bauer or dump him for Walker, Meyer, or some other prospect? |
1:01 |
: Yes and no. Hold Bauer for another start. HIs fastball command was okay, he just hung some curves.
|
1:01 |
What do you think of Jake Arrieta? |
1:02 |
: No real standout pitch (but three that he throws) and bad command of a high-velocity fastball means he’s always got promise. Doubt he really connects though.
|
1:02 |
Odorizzi’s new splitter added this Spring the reason for his mini-breakout? |
1:02 |
: For sure. But the fastball is meh and the slider is bad, so I’m not really buying.
|
1:02 |
MY GOD, IT’S ZE GERMANS!!! THEY INVADED THE CHAT!!!! |
1:02 |
what do you think of domingo santana ROS? Have an NA spot avail, which would you prefer to have him or meyer |
1:03 |
: Santana is close. And I’d probably rather have him because I have no idea why Presley is still playing. Even with Santana’s K rate.
|
1:03 |
I got offered garbage for Trout In a dynasty i countered with Mccutch and Tanaka a dec return? |
1:04 |
: I saw Harper and Kershaw and thought it was okay. That’s fine.
|
1:04 |
i’m in a 2 catcher obp 5×5 roto – is dioner worth dropping for montero? |
1:05 |
: Jesus? Jesus is back! I can’t trust him. I think Navarro will at least walk more soon.
|
1:05 |
:
|
1:06 |
: Speaking of Jesus, here’s a Jesus of song.
|
1:06 |
: Required history lesson. Read up on Arthur Lee and Love.
|
1:06 |
When do SwStr% numbers stabilize for a pitcher? and for various pitches (# of pitches)? |
1:07 |
: I don’t know that yet. Maybe an offseason thing at this point, with my schedule. But I do know that K% is around 150 BF. And since 4 pitches per Batter Faced, I bet Swinging Strike rate stabilizes around 50 BF.
|
1:07 |
Wer wird besser in den nächsten drei Jahren sein? Stroman oder Richards? |
1:07 |
: Richards. Big Velocity, two breakers, one a curve, and has shown more big league success.
|
1:08 |
How serious a candidate is Brad Boxberger to steal some saves in that suddenly convoluted pen? |
1:08 |
: Pitching in losses, in arbitration. Doubt it.
|
1:08 |
Is LaRoche this good? |
1:08 |
: Writing about him for Monday. Did an interview. Some medical things going well for him, plus the rest of the lineup is hitting well and that helps. All of history suggests he can .270/25 in his sleep.
|
1:08 |
Where are you on the Strasburg is now underrated debate going around? |
1:09 |
: Been calling him a buy low in fantasy for so long that the window is closed and now the real-life baseball guys are noticing.
|
1:09 |
I rarely ask questions specific to my team, but you’re the one guy who’s opinion I value most. So here goes…I’ve suffered through owning Brad Miller all season in my AL-only league, and though he has been a tad bit better of late, I picked up Suarez just to make sure I’m covered at SS. Corey Hart is available on my waiver wire, so I’m contemplating picking him up. That said, Suarez and possibly Danny Farquhar are the only two guys I could drop for Hart. What should I do? Thanks so much!!! |
1:10 |
: With Jesus coming up, and Logan not dead yet, I think Seattle’s too crowded to make Hart a must pickup.
|
1:10 |
Thanks for the chat! I need a second shortstop to carry me through the year. I’m worried that DD is cutting into Owings’ PT. Aybar and Lowrie are available on my waiver wire. Dump Owings for one of them? |
1:11 |
: Lowrie is a super solid backup SS. Owings has more upside, though. And the loser of the audition might still end up starting like in NY.
|
1:11 |
Gary Thorne (O’s TV play-by-play guy) had to introduce a graphic in one of last week’s games that used WAR. He quite literally did a belly laugh after saying “WAR.” Then Mike Bordick had to read what was presumably fed to him by the producers, and it was a mostly accurate statement about WAR. Bordick sounded like he’d rather chew glass, and someone was holding a gun to his head. |
1:11 |
: baby steps.
|
1:11 |
Eno – has a pitcher ever declined in giving you grip pics? |
1:12 |
: G Cole does something funky with his fastballs he wouldn’t show me. When I was taking Roark’s grip pictures, a teammate yelled at him that he was giving away secrets so I yelled back it was just grips. Mostly the pitchers dig it.
|
1:12 |
Has billy hamilton proven his critics wrong? |
1:12 |
: I mean, he’s still not good with the bat.
|
1:12 |
How would you rank their long term prospects, Yordano, Bauer, Hutchinson? |
1:13 |
: Probably still in that order, considering Hutch has the least pedigree and already had surgery. But if Bauer progresses, remember all the things that people said about Ventura and his size and durability. (And remember Kaz was good for a while before he broke down).
|
1:13 |
Who would you rather have on your roster ROS, Granderson or Leonys? |
1:13 |
: Martin.
|
1:13 |
Picked up brock holt in dynasty. Will I be dropping him shortly? |
1:13 |
: Yes.
|
1:14 |
Your thoughts on Josh Rutledge ROS? |
1:15 |
: Problem is that he has more power and speed than LeM, but worse plate discipline and defense. And it’s hard to know what the team will look at going forward. RutRut has mixed league upside, though, so he’s worth picking up in leagues where you have a deep bench and a need at MI.
|
1:15 |
Hey Eno, any good sours you’d rec? |
1:16 |
: Anything from Almanac or Russian River. The Goose Island sisters (Halia, Juliette, Gillian) are all good but expensive. But easier to find than others. And all sours are expensive.
|
1:17 |
Do you see any reason for McCann to turn it around? |
1:17 |
: Even with the shift on, a .233 BABIP is a bit extreme. Across baseball, the shift depresses BABIP on the order of ten points.
|
1:17 |
: Nope.
|
1:18 |
Am I played out, or is there still mileage in my shareable so random lol appearances in people’s lives? |
1:18 |
: I will always love you.
|
1:18 |
how come they don’t have reverse fantasy leagues? where the best players would be on the waiver wire and the goal was to have the highest ERA and least homers? lol 1st round, Bloomquist/ Y. Betancourt/ Ryan Flaherty hahaha |
1:18 |
: They do. I think Razzball has em?
|
1:18 |
So, I’ve got Matt Adams coming off the DL tomorrow and nowhere to put him. Drop Dickerson or Hamilton or just cut bait on Adams? |
1:18 |
: Can’t you just not make any moves for a while and leave him there?
|
1:19 |
is juan francisco done for, or is this just part of the package? |
1:19 |
: Ks mean he’ll do this.
|
1:19 |
Re: dropping Cain its 4×4 ottoneu paid $17 for him. |
1:19 |
: With HR/9 in there. Yeah, and you want the money back? Give him a start or two, but it’s now closing in on 18 months of homer problem…
|
1:19 |
I don’t know if it was you or not, but someone from Fangraphs said pick up Keuchel about a month ago, I go to his player page, and see he is owned in 4% CBS leagues. I was like F that! 🙁 |
1:19 |
: I said to pick him up before the season started!
|
1:20 |
YOU CAN’T MAKE ME LEARN THINGS ENO |
1:20 |
Hutchison – Z-swing is trending up and o-swing is trending down. Going to the four-seam more. Looks like early season K/BB was a mirage? |
1:20 |
: I’ll have to take a closer look.
|
1:20 |
Longoria: O/U 20 HRs, 65 RBIs |
1:20 |
: Over. He has bad stretches.
|
1:20 |
What range of WAR per yr do you think a pitcher needs to achieve to be considered an Ace, a top of rotation starter, and a back end of rotation starter? |
1:21 |
: Generally two wins is an average player. Four is all-star. Aces are around six.
|
1:21 |
Who would you try to target if selling Keuchel? Alex Cobb? Wacha? |
1:22 |
: These are impossible, sorry. Go to the teams that are in contention in your league but need pitching. Then look at their position players and where they might think they have surplus. Then find their second-best position player at that position.
|
1:22 |
How serious a candidate is Brad Boxburger to sell me a burger…in a box? |
1:22 |
: Serious.
|
1:22 |
If I’m punting the season, is it a dick move to pick up random guys and trade them to people when they start playing well? |
1:22 |
: No but you better wait until they forget you got them on waivers.
|
1:22 |
I’m not trying to defend Machado’s actions, I’m just trying to defend him against the harsh critics who are treating him like Hitler 2.0. That’s all. I still think he is a 21 year old dummy. |
1:23 |
Will you miss me? Will anyone miss me? |
1:23 |
wow, we learn baseball, beers, music and now getting foreign language lessons all for free while we blow off work. |
1:23 |
: Quality interlude.
|
1:23 |
Are you starting Drew Smyly tomorrow against the suddenly revamped Twinkies offense? |
1:23 |
: Yes.
|
1:23 |
“plus the rest of the lineup is hitting well and that helps” – you mean this just in terms of RBI, right? Goes against everything I’ve been told here before! |
1:23 |
: No, it’s actually easier to hit with runners on base.
|
1:24 |
: (I’ll confirm this in my piece, but I’m pretty sure it’s true. Pitcher goes into stretch, and the first baseman opens up a hole on the right side by covering.)
|
1:24 |
Mmmm… I like my eggs Odorizzi |
1:24 |
Eno, please translate what the heck you were talking about in German to that guy about. I think it was fantasy advice. Please share with all, K? Thanks! |
1:25 |
: The parts where I was talking about German was me just telling him that I couldn’t answer all the questions if I had ten hours!
|
1:25 |
Are you buying, selling, or holding Cobb as a Top 20 SP? |
1:25 |
: Buying
|
1:25 |
Any chance Cam Bedrosian seizes closer role with LAA? |
1:25 |
: no
|
1:25 |
Eno – has Brett Farve ever declined in giving you…nevermind. |
1:26 |
: no but I have joked about that often — I’m not allowed to take pics in the clubhouse, mostly because of that sort of issue.
|
1:26 |
I’ve got some grip pics I can send you! |
1:26 |
: there we go
|
1:26 |
Has kolten wong proven his critics hramilton? |
1:26 |
: GAH IM A WEREWOLF
|
1:26 |
Who was the Roark teammate who yelled at him? Yeah, I know you probably can’t say… |
1:27 |
: It was joking, no big deal. Interesting clubhouse though. Someone asked me who I was hovering for, so I told him, Roark was on couch (not supposed to bother them on couches), Roark said, oh you want me, and it worked out for me.
|
1:27 |
Billy Hamilton has proven approximately three critics wrong. They all said he was slow. |
1:27 |
: Man those guys.
|
1:28 |
Thoughts on Charlie Morton? Am i crazy to think he’s better pickup than Jaime Garcia? |
1:28 |
: I don’t think so, velocity is back to where it was when he was meh.
|
1:28 |
MOOKIE BETTS |
1:28 |
thanks for answering. i don’t love jesus. but i do love love. |
1:28 |
I really hope Bo Porter is still around when the Astros are good. He seems like an awesome dude. You should see if he’ll do an interview! |
1:29 |
: Him and Bud Black are managers I really want to interview.
|
1:29 |
RutRut is the worst nickname of all time |
1:29 |
: butbut
|
1:29 |
aaaaaaaah LES SAVY FAV! My username is a shortened version of atomsareenough, which was taken from a LSF lyric. Tim Harrington is the best frontman ever. This is surely TMI, but once at a Les Savy Fav show, I was in the front row and had my hands in the air, and mid-song, he grabbed my hand and sucked on my finger. No joke. |
1:29 |
: one man lude worthy, though
|
1:29 |
Re: announcers, how could they possibly like WAR? these guys have to talk for 500 hours a year about their own team’s 25 guys and their opponents. Reducing what each guy brings to the table to a summary statistic that it too convoluted to break down on air makes their job harder and more boing |
1:29 |
Does Gausman finally stick in the O’s rotation this time? Thanks! |
1:29 |
: might depend on this next start.
|
1:29 |
Do you like frozen pizza? |
1:30 |
: acid reflux means I can only eat pizza sparingly and for lunch, and so when I do, I try to make it really really good pizza.
|
1:30 |
Corey Dickerson:mixed league player? |
1:30 |
: yes
|
1:30 |
Time to give up on Marco Estrada? Walks and homers aren’t a good combo. |
1:30 |
: Walks should slow down.
|
1:30 |
eno thoughts on german sour style gose? really like westbrook’s take on it |
1:31 |
: Have had some terrible ones where it was like a lame barely tart wheat. But I don’t hate the style yet.
|
1:31 |
McHugh’s recent outings were reportedly caused by having blisters on his finger. Should get better. |
1:31 |
why are sours so expensive? take longer? |
1:31 |
: Usually barrel aged, so they take longer AND there’s the cost of the barrel.
|
1:31 |
: One last song. Love this one.
|
1:32 |
:
|
1:32 |
DO you have a favorite prediction that is doing well? |
1:32 | : Actually kind of killing it I think |
1:32 |
I love me some Derek Norris, and he’s been great to me this season. That said, I need a roster spot desperately and I’m looking in his direction. Given that he has to compete with Jaso (who seems to be getting more starts of late), what would you do? |
1:33 |
: Yeah Norris is tough. I like what he’s doing, but they’re using him more v LHP than anything. In mixers, he’s droppable I think. Not enough counting stats.
|
1:33 |
Sorry we beat your Cardinal in the Super-Regional. On to Omaha! |
1:33 |
: Nice team. Love that little dude.
|
1:33 |
Will the HOF ever re-calibrate on pitchers, or are we doomed for a High Heat 03-type HOF with 12 position players for every pitcher |
1:34 |
: They better. 300 Wins not coming again.
|
1:34 |
Interesting NPR article today on the scientific evidence of platelet-rich plasma therapy. Read it. Now u smart. |
1:34 |
: will do. thanks!
|
1:34 |
I thought Bergerson a better name for a burger chain. r |
1:34 |
: Bergmann?
|
1:34 |
Chase Whitley – is he legit? |
1:35 |
: Yes. Three good pitches. Scroll down/up.
|
1:35 |
when Odorizzi faces Odor, what will happen? besides an out, most likely |
1:35 |
: They cancel out and the Italian soccer team wins (Azzuri?). bad joke.
|
1:36 |
I’m going to Germany! What breweries should I go to? |
1:36 |
: Tweet at @BeerGraphs, we’ll get you a good answer.
|
1:36 |
Is Pedroia even a top 5 2B from here on out? The wrist seems to be seriously hurting him |
1:36 |
: Yeah the power is going to be gone again this year.
|
1:36 |
Over/under 15 HR for Dom Brown |
1:36 |
: Over. I think he can .275/18/8 or so. That’s an average mixed league OF, actually, literally.
|
1:36 |
Eno: Rank – Roark, Whitley and McHugh |
1:37 |
: Roark last even though I love him in real life in his role. McHugh has more innings, like Whitley’s pitches more.
|
1:37 |
Need a 3B, my Taveras for his Arenado on the DL? non-Keeper, H2H. |
1:37 |
: Do this. now.
|
1:37 |
My day is made when I saw I was part of quality interlude but I can’t tell my wife who works her ass off each day that I was having fun during my lunch hour. Oh the marital irony. Hey guys, stay single. |
1:37 |
: Yes, this happens.
|
1:37 |
What’s the best smell you ever smelled? |
1:38 |
: Might be Stone’s Enjoy By.
|
1:38 |
Have you tried Le Freak from green flash? i almost tried it but i went with enjoy by, love it too much |
1:38 |
: hah
|
1:38 |
Get Di Fara pizza!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
1:38 |
: Exactly.

huge trade just happened, changes everything: Blue Jays acquired OF Adron Chambers from the Astros for LHP Alejandro Solarte and INF Will Dupont. |
1:39 |
You will be assimilated. |
1:39 |
Omeprazole dude. Life is short. pizza. |
1:39 |
Great job on bold predictions mr. showoff, but bj upton prediction was just plain crazy talk |
1:39 |
: hey they supposed to be bold

1:39 |
Any suggestions on where to look, or what to look for, in terms of jobs as an American moving to Germany with no real plan? |
1:40 |
: LOL. They speak German well, but there are usually jobs editing English for English-language publications. Or teaching English.
|
1:40 |
Why does everyone predict the demise of the 300 win pitcher? People have been saying that with each one to do it since i can remember yet if you look it up, half the guys who have won 300 won their 300th in my lifetime (’77). #FAIL |
1:41 |
: Fewer seasonal wins every year. Fewer 20-game winners. Fewer innings for starters. More innings for relievers. Guys winning 300th did it in a different environment, largely.
|
1:41 |
: by seasonal wins I mean, the best starters are winning fewer games every year.

Think Morales can be a top 12 1B? |
1:42 |
: No
|
1:42 |
Wow, you called Dozier. After seeing the results of last year’s bold predictions I started tuning them out. Brad Miller still worth grabbing in deep leagues? |
1:42 |
: Yes.

![]() luda duda dude lude. |
1:42 |
My league freaked out when I landed Matt Kemp, Ryan Howard and Charlie Blackmon for Chris Sale. They tried to veto but I prevailed. Thoughts? Lopsided deal? Man do I hate trade vetos. |
1:42 |
: I’d rather have Sale!
|
1:43 |
: Hey guys, have a phone call I gotta make!!
|
1:43 |
: Thanks guys
|

With a phone full of pictures of pitchers' fingers, strange beers, and his two toddler sons, Eno Sarris can be found at the ballpark or a brewery most days. Read him here, writing about the A's or Giants at The Athletic, or about beer at October. Follow him on Twitter @enosarris if you can handle the sandwiches and inanity.
Eno, love reading your articles and insights here and on twitter! What do you make of Verlander. His velocity was back up last night averaging 95ish on his fastball and topping out at 99, and he appeared to have good movement on all his pitches. Is there reason for hope (the surgery etc) that he can get back in a groove and be a useful commodity both in real life and fantasy?
