Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 6/27/13
8:46 |
: I’m sure my thumb will be fine in 15 minutes. *cuts thumb off* See you soon!
|
9:00 |
I wear this crown of thorns |
9:00 |
Just wanted to say thanks for doing this chat every week. It’s both highly informative and extremely fun at the same time. |
9:00 |
: AND I”M DOING IT IN PAIN
|
9:00 |
My kingdom for a thumb. |
9:00 |
pain in thumb whilst typing might be the biggest first world problem ever |
9:00 |
: and from pickup ball too
|
9:00 |
Brandon Belt in Colorado feel like a good weekend stream? |
9:01 |
: Yeah and he’s swinging it pretty good, even though there’s no such thing as a hot streak.
|
9:01 |
Thoughts on Nathan Eovaldi’s new fastball? Think he has a chance to sustain it? |
9:01 |
: Sure but fastball velocity was never his problem. What’s his third pitch.
|
9:01 |
Carlos Martinez: 1)will be called up within next 2-3 weeks, right? 2) Percent chance he stays in rotation till at least 9/1? He has 48 innings in right now, he pitched 104 in 2012. 134-48=86. 86/6 (inning/start) = 14 starts. 14 * 5 = 70 games. I think he makes it easily if he is their 5th starter coming out of the break, right? 3) Him or Wheeler ROS from time CM comes up if I need K’s and W’s? |
9:02 |
: They are holding Wacha’s innings down because they think they might need him at the end of the year. That makes me think that Wacha is next in line, and I’d want Wheeler, if only as upside play on bench. (not starting him until I see the tipping end, and a nice two- or three-walk game.
|
9:02 |
Why has Teheran only thrown his changeup around 5% of the time? Wasn’t it consistently rated as his best pitch when he was a prospect? |
9:02 |
: IT’s a mystery. Right now, he’s sinker/slider, and that’s not a sustainable combination.
|
9:03 |
earlier in the season I traded jason heyward and jaime garcia (when he was hot, before he was injured) for joey votto. i also traded headley and trumbo for yu, which i was able to do since i had aramis and hanley for backup at 3rd. how good should i feel right now? |
9:03 |
: pretty f’ing good
|
9:03 |
Is Rickie Weeks potentially the best buy-low option of the season? |
9:03 |
: And Heyward maybe.
|
9:03 |
were you named after Brian Eno? |
9:03 |
: Yup! And born in 1979, so I was named after glam rock Brian Eno, and then he did all that other stuff.
|
9:03 |
My mclouth for his laroche? Obp league. What side you like? |
9:03 |
: McLouth. More categories.
|
9:03 |
Is Lincecum droppanle |
9:04 |
: Sure. In shallower leagues. I’m holding on for dear life in a 14-team k/9 league. But I’ve thought about it.
|
9:04 |
Who closes if/when Gregg & Papelbon are traded? |
9:06 |
: Oh no, don’t even want to think about Chicago with Gregg gone. I don’t believe in Russell, obviously, since he’s a LOOGY really. Maybe Parker. In Philly, I like Bastardo (got last save when guys were out) and then DeFratus. DeFratus a righty, so it could be him. But Bastardo has the K rate.
|
9:06 |
Erasmo Ramiez or Cory Kluber. Who you got? |
9:06 |
: The guy in the bigs now.
|
9:06 |
What beer pairs best with a Puig homerun? |
9:06 |
: Something bold and brash. LIke a Green Flash West Coast IPA that just hits you in the MOUF.
|
9:06 |
Oh man, I haven’t been here in a few weeks. Did I miss anything? |
9:06 |
The Baseball Gods have not been kind to Lucas Duda this week. He is on the DL with a strained left intercostal. SAY IT AIN'T SO ENO! I blame this on Juan Pierres Mustache!! |
9:07 |
: Yo missed the beginning of a blood feud.
|
9:07 |
I pretty much suck now, huh? |
9:07 |
: Too many two-seamers.
|
9:07 |
Instead of his surface numbers regressing towards his peripherals, Edwin Jackson’s peripherals have just gotten worse. What on Earth am I supposed to do with this guy?! |
9:07 |
: Drop him. Seriously. I think his upside is 4/1.3 with ok k/9.
|
9:07 |
Trying to trade King Felix away for prospects/young players in Otto pts. Have the option of Bogaerts and Arcia, Cole and Baez(maybe Yelich instead), or Taveras and Archie Bradley/Corbin. Any of those a fair return? Which do you like most? |
9:08 |
: Bogaerts side probably. I like Taveras/Corbin, but the pitching side is probably not as high-ceiling as Arcia, and the Cards take forever with their prospects. Bogaerts has a chance at 3b like right now.
|
9:08 |
With an older player like Ortiz, should I be selling high while his production is (semi) amazing? I’m worried about his yearly injury derailing his season. |
9:08 |
: In a keeper league for sure. In a redraft… he’s usually good when the team is good, and the team is good.
|
9:08 |
Shipyard was good. See what you mean about the IPAs but Monkey Fist was pretty decent. |
9:09 |
: Everything is better at the brewery! But did not like those IPAs.
|
9:09 |
I was trading Puig for Shields/H. Bailey when I read your article on him and backed out. I hope I don’t regret it. |
9:09 |
: That’s decent actually. I was just saying I wouldn’t trade Puig for the buy-low guys, where there’s a question about health (like Kemp).
|
9:09 |
how did you get involved with fangraphs? |
9:09 |
: Applied for RotoGraphs. And I hire often.
|
9:10 |
How much does the Bundy TJ news hurt his keeper value? |
9:10 |
: A lot. Now you have to wait another year and a half to see him. I might buy-low if buying low means really cheap.
|
9:10 |
Better fantasy starter ROS – Colome or Archer? |
9:10 |
: Archer. Not sure Colome always knows where it’s going.
|
9:11 |
![]() Thumbs up Eno |
9:11 |
: It’s so big and black and blue right now.
|
9:11 |
Is Matt Weiters just not that good as a fantasy catcher? |
9:11 |
: But pretty damn good as a real-life one.
|
9:11 |
What do you think of targeting Braun for next year? Does his injury, suspension risk, and in my keeper league a high salary make him someone I should stay away from? |
9:11 |
: His suspension, if it happens, and I don’t think it will, will probably be over in time to have a good season next year. But what about his SBs? Could be the salary that matters the most.
|
9:12 |
Mitch Moreland worth owning in a shallow league? |
9:12 |
: Eh. I mean sure, I like him, but I don’t quite trust him v LHP yet.
|
9:12 |
Which closers are most likely to lose their jobs at the trade deadline? |
9:12 |
: Benoit, Gregg, Papelbon.
|
9:12 |
Eno- is LoCain about to lose his gig to Lough and Dyson? |
9:13 |
: Maybe a platoon, but I doubt a full-on lost job. He’s a better player, true-talent, then Dyson, who’s a one-tooler.
|
9:13 |
Please rank your top 3 closer speculation pickup! |
9:15 |
: Tom Wilhelmsen (if he was dropped haha), Luke Gregerson, Jake McGee, Junichi Tazawa, Dalte Thayer, Blake Parker. Rex Brothers is better than most on talent, but I think Rox will hold Raffy since they in contention. Trevor Rosenthal is still on my radar, but damn. Mujica still doing it with 65% splitters.
|
9:15 |
we were better apart. |
9:15 |
: Song title.
|
9:15 |
You ok? |
9:16 |
: Just hoping it’s not broken.
|
9:16 |
Take that gangrene! |
9:16 |
: or that.
|
9:16 |
What’s the highest beer wins you’ve drank in a day? I’ve pulled off a 3-way trade for heady topper AND zombie dust, and think I may break 100 wins on that day. |
9:16 |
: Went to Russian River for Pliny the Younger. Had three of them, and then all their sours. That was probably a 100-win day!
|
9:16 |
Need outfield help in my 6×6 roto league. Please eval: Rios/Crisp for Minor/Frazier. |
9:17 |
: I want Rios/Crisp side. But there’s obviously needs involved here.
|
9:17 |
Was that audio of The Hawk you posted at NG recorded on the first phonograph? |
9:17 |
: Hah. My computer made the sounds out loud and then recorded them, so it was a bit incestuous. I’m sure that added some reverb.
|
9:17 |
EEEE-NOOO!! Noticed Alex Rios has lost 20 feet from his HR+FB distance this year, yet still posting similar HR/FB ratio. Anything to do with the chilly weather this year in Chicago and are worries outweighed by chance he gets moved pre deadline? Also are you starting Lester tonight v TOR? |
9:17 |
: I think he’s still good to go.
|
9:17 |
Hanley is showing some nice production right now, worth a buy-high before he becomes a buy-higher? |
9:18 |
: Worth checking to see if Hanley owner found another shortstop in the meantime. Might have a surplus that fits your needs. I do like hanley.
|
9:18 |
Do you enjoy watching the All Star Game and its associated circus? |
9:18 |
: Not especially. They are trying 75% at best.
|
9:18 |
Who’s your favorite player in real baseball that isn’t very good in fantasy? |
9:18 |
: Simmons maybe. Still have love in my heart for Duda, amazingly. Just a real nice guy.
|
9:18 |
Is this the year the Pirates end over .500? Looked like last year was going to be the year around this time… |
9:18 |
: yes.
|
9:19 |
why is the beergraphs link in your tagline dead? |
9:19 |
: Gah I thought I fixed that. will do it again.
|
9:19 |
I KNOW U KNOW WE ALL KNOW FOR ENO |
9:19 |
Some interloper stole my handle when I was on vacaation last week and posted pure madness. I am glad to say that I am back actively chatting today and will post only diluted madness. |
9:19 |
hurt – NIN |
9:19 |
: someone else did it better interlude
|
9:19 |
Do you think there’s a true talent level for math? Or can most people succeed at it if they work hard enough. |
9:20 |
: I used to be good (three years of calculus in high school) but now I’m bad (see any of my posts). So that might mean something.
|
9:20 |
Eno, in Boston, any good east coast Saisons that you’ve had and would recommend? |
9:20 |
: Saison Dupont is the one for you. they have an unfiltered one too. Out of cooperstown. Hennepin from Ommegang is good.
|
9:20 |
Anything that makes you think Hamels turns it around, or are you selling on him anyway you can at this point? |
9:21 |
: I’ll put it this way: I don’t see anything that tells me he *won’t* turn it around.
|
9:21 |
Can you rank these four outfielders ROS: D. Brown, Jennings, Pence, Marte. How about as keepers? |
9:22 |
: this year: Pence/Jennings/Marte/Brown. Keepers: Jennings/Marte/Brown/Pence. Pence is having a great season but he’s old and I wouldn’t depend on those SBs continuing. Brown is good, but I think more of a true talent .275/25/5 guy, Marte and Jennings have more speed. Case to be made for Marte over Jennings. Maybe I’d swithc those.
|
9:22 |
THE MONTELL JORDAN GUESSES ARE OFF, BECAUSE I KNOW IT’S “HURT!” Didi or Iglesias ROS? |
9:22 |
: Didi
|
9:22 |
also, are all Pirates fans like me waiting for Fangraphs to feature an article that tells us whether we can believe in this team or not? or is that just me? |
9:22 |
: that piece was already written
|
9:22 |
Do you predict Shelby Miller will be shut down later in the season? If so, when would you guess? |
9:23 |
: Nah, I mean maybe a start or two off so they can use in postseason, but not a real limit/shutdown situation.
|
9:23 |
Please rank in order of best bet for saves moving forward: Benoit, Putz, Uehara or Cishek? |
9:23 |
: Putz, Cishek, Benoit, Uehara.
|
9:23 |
Dynasty league: Howard for Shields? Howard rides my bench. |
9:23 |
: YES.
|
9:23 |
Question is are you listening to the NIN version or Johnny Cash version? |
9:23 |
: exactly. Love the Cash one.
|
9:23 |
What is one to do with V-Mart? |
9:23 |
: Wait.
|
9:23 |
Trent Reznor. Someone just dropped Derek Holland in my 10*mixed … this is a valid (and slam dunk) use of my waiver priority yes? |
9:23 |
: yes.
|
9:24 |
Any reason to worry about Derek Holland? His underlying numbers seem alright, but the results haven’t been there lately. |
9:24 |
: just a tough stretch.
|
9:24 |
My Grandfather once met Johnny Cash at a bar and shook his hand. Now they are both dead but their story lives on. |
9:24 |
DUDE! |
9:24 |
Damn opposable thumbs are such an inconvenience. |
9:24 |
: LUDE!
|
9:24 |
Am I coming up anytime soon? |
9:25 |
: Yes I do believe he is. But we won’t know until he’s up. Might be waiting for injury to one of the vets.
|
9:25 |
What’s the deal with Anthony Rendon? Will he continue to be high avg/OBP+low power? His splits in minors suggest otherwise but I don’t understand how power could disappear between the minors and the majors. |
9:25 |
: Power takes the longest to stabilize. And I do think his true talent power level is up for discussion.
|
9:25 |
Johnny Cash version or Nine in Nails version? Do you agree with how Collins/Buck called Wheeler’s game the other day? Pitch tipping aside, I felt like every time he got to two strikes on a hitter, they called for breaking pitches that he couldn’t locate and the Sox wouldn’t swing at. Why not let him work the fastball when it’s on and pick the spots for breaking pitches? |
9:26 |
: I think the Mets — perhaps rightfully — sometimes focus on development at the big league level too. Think of Harvey and his changeup. They kept calling for him to throw it more until they were shouted down and his performance made it obvious he was fine with a show-me/occasional change. Wheeler needs to show more until they stop screwing with him.
|
9:26 |
Arcia? This kid legit? |
9:27 |
: Has power. Plate discipline leaves me cold, like he might have a bad BA.
|
9:27 |
How important is a third pitch to you? Rays’ Jake McGee got by with FB/CH for a while and broke down, now he’s added slider to great success… could that be Marmol’s problem? |
9:27 |
: Third pitch bigger deal for starters. Usually relievers can get by. Although look at Capps, he could use a changeup. Lefties still hit him well.
|
9:27 |
Thoughts on Seattle minor league SS Brad Miller? I like him. A lot. does he get called up and hit this year? |
9:28 |
: A little worried about staying at short, but I do think he could come up soon. It’s not like the guy at short right now is wowing them.
|
9:28 |
ESPN players alert: Edwin Encarnacion gained 3B eligibility last night! |
9:28 |
a lot of fantasy experts have been employing this “live chat” now, just wanted to say i think you do it best and are the gold standard for fantasy live chats |
9:28 |
: Not quite a new thing, but I’ll take the compliment.
|
9:28 |
WHere will Wilin Rosario finish the season ranked among catchers? |
9:28 |
: Top three.
|
9:29 |
Guess I can stop asking if I should hold on to Tex. |
9:29 |
: In a keeper league? Only if you keep double-digits. I’ll keep him on my DL in my keep25 until I need the slot.
|
9:29 |
Is John Lackey’s miraculous run sustainable? Because it looks sustainable, but I’m having a hard time trusting… |
9:29 |
: I think he can high-threes ERA with a 7k9 like he used to.
|
9:29 |
Jurickson Profar: Destined to be a shiny ornamental bauble on my keeper league bench for the rest of this season? |
9:29 |
: Old team, there will be another injury.
|
9:30 |
Who is better for fantasy, Ellsbury or Aoki and why? |
9:30 |
: ellsbury because Aoki’s CS suggests he’ll steal less often. Also, he had three sub-20 SB seasons in Japan before coming over.
|
9:30 |
Rickie Weeks is 11th in wOBA and wRC+ among qualified 2B and tied for 5th in HR among all 2B. I believed in him! |
9:31 |
: well those aren’t fantasy cats, but he usually comes around. I just can’t own low-batting-average guys. Once you start losing in that category, you can’t get it back.
|
9:31 |
Robert Stephenson or George Springer in a H2H keeper league? I have a weak outfield and older starting pitchers. |
9:31 |
: I’d probably take Stephenson. I’m worried about Springer’s K%.
|
9:31 |
![]() Yup |
9:32 |
: I mean can you believe it. my mom’s a bit strange.
|
9:32 |
More droppable in a 14-team league: Porcello or Teheran? |
9:32 |
: porcello
|
9:32 |
Who is the better starter available at the deadline, Nolasco or Garza? My friend–who is a Cubs fan–says Garza… is he way too biased, or kind of right? |
9:32 |
: He’s right IMO.
|
9:32 |
Only anarchists are pretty. |
9:32 |
Pig’s Ear Brown has to be in the running for a Post-Puig HR celebration |
9:32 |
Blind Puig IPA |
9:32 |
seems like porkslap pale ale would be appropriate for puig homers |
9:33 |
I blame Juan Pierre’s Mustache for all fantasy maladies now…it’s great |
9:33 |
: Hey let’s not all jump in on JPM.
|
9:33 |
I never seen a one sided feud before…but Maxamuz has managed to pull it off. I have yet to see any evidence that Juan Pierre’s mustache actually cares about the call outs from Maxamuz. It is truly a sad day when our society can’t hate one another over trivial things. |
9:33 |
: We’ll see about this.
|
9:33 |
w/ Brett Anderson out until “at least” August is he at all a worthwhile DL stash for a hope at a good Sept. for H2h playoffs? |
9:33 |
: I still like him…
|
9:33 |
Will Nick Swisher ever hit again? (same goes for Cespedes and Willingham). |
9:34 |
: I’ll take the youngest guy in the group. One thing about Swish is that he changed home park power environments pretty drastically.
|
9:34 |
Are you a Nick Franklin believer, long-term? |
9:34 |
: Yes! Maybe a little better than Neil Walker.
|
9:34 |
In the spring you told us to use up SP inning while the weather was cold. Should we now be saving some innings for when the rosters expand? Do good SPs do better in September? |
9:35 |
: Man. I need to look into that. September analysis is tough, but you have to think some pitchers get the AAAA lineup some days.
|
9:35 |
Billy Butler: wha’ happen? No power and a BABIP of .320. Tentative buy low? Rather have him or Heyward at UTIL? |
9:35 |
: He’s a true talent .280/20-25 guy. Still can do it.
|
9:35 |
Bombarding your queue with nonsensical nonsense is the goal today. This is what happens when you miss three weeks in a row. |
9:35 |
: Unsure if your posts will be any different than mine.
|
9:36 |
Grandal line ROS (assuming no suspension)? He seems to be already starting to bounce back… |
9:36 |
: I like him in the .260-.280/double digit power group that starts around #8 and goes to #16.
|
9:36 |
Carter Capps closing at some point this season or AAA? |
9:37 |
: He’ll be fine. He’ll close after Wilhelmsen I bet, but not this year.
|
9:37 |
But Heyward is still bad! how can we be sure hes a buy low? |
9:37 |
: He’s hitting more fly balls, should turn into power. Luck stats look like they should regress.
|
9:37 |
Cespedes/Shields/Parker or Ellsbury/Darvish? 10-team with OPS, K/9, IP, QS (no wins) |
9:37 |
: Ells/Darvish fairly clearly to me.
|
9:38 |
Is Leonys Martin 10-team league material? 5th OF? |
9:38 |
: Only if you have a decent bench. Not a starter v LHP.
|
9:38 |
Is it time to sell Matt Holliday while he has some name value of his consistency left? He’s been, shall I say, not stellar this year. |
9:38 |
: True talent .285/25 guy with no speed, lots of Rs/RBIs. Still pretty sweet.
|
9:38 |
: But in keeper league, sell sometime this year, shoulda sold last year like I said.
|
9:38 |
Fun Fact of the day: Nolan Ryan had a career .265 babip (weak contact much?) |
9:39 |
: SIERA found a link between high K% and and low BABIPs.
|
9:39 |
Gyorko still has his job full time when he gets back, right? |
9:39 |
: yes. but. setback.
|
9:39 |
Was just browsing stats the other day. Found this interesting. Almost identical stats for Chris Carter and Mark Reynolds yet one is owned in 25% of leagues, the other 75% |
9:39 |
: And I don’t own either. Once. Ks scare me.
|
9:39 |
Trade Howie K to get Samardjzia? Got MI Depth |
9:39 |
: Yes.
|
9:39 |
How many PH HR has Evan Gattis hit whilst on the DL? |
9:40 |
: All of them.
|
9:40 |
Hurt – Nine Inch Nails/Johnny Cash – on Eovaldi, while the lack of a third pitch may limit his upside – is he not a good play at home and in bigger ballparks? Do you like him this weekend against San Diego? |
9:40 |
Sorry I’m late, it’s hard to hitch-hike with a broken thumb |
9:40 |
: Yes great spot starter.
|
9:40 |
: NOT YOU TOO
|
9:40 |
PLEASE explain to me the difference between previous page, previous entries/next page, next entries. Ive been trying to figure it out for 2 years |
9:40 |
: LOL. Gets me too. I’m sure you can get it better than I can explain it here though.
|
9:40 |
Tell me CC is more than an innings eater these days. |
9:41 |
: Looks like the velo loss was a big deal, huh.
|
9:41 |
Jake McGee or Joel Peralta (5×5) |
9:41 |
: Jake.
|
9:41 |
I know he has less than 100 PA’s but isn’t Puig a keeper in most formats? That’s the only part of the Shields/H.Bailey trade that bothers me. |
9:41 |
: Oh, keeper. Yeah, Like I said in my article, in a keeper league, I found the guy, gonna be hard to get him from me.
|
9:42 |
Hurt by NIN? In a NL only keeper roto. 12 points out of first and 10 points above 3rd. I’ve got BJ Upton, Rickie Weeks, Prado, and Braun. Do I sell the farm and try to pick up more ground on first? Or assume these guys turn it around and push me over the top? |
9:42 |
: Can’t sell low on those guys. They are your trade deadline acquisitions.
|
9:42 |
First rec league bball game in months tomorrow – any suggestions other than not hurt my thumb? |
9:42 |
: Cut to the basket.
|
9:42 |
“It’s so big and black…” –Out of context Eno Sarris quotes! |
9:42 |
I feel like Kramer barging into Jerry’s apartment whenever I’m late for the chat. |
9:43 |
Is Duda the new Chen? |
9:43 |
Hello, Mr. Sarris! It would be invaluable for me and my non-corporeal baseball franchise if you could transcribe the RoS ZiPS projections for a random assortment of players. Thank you and good day. |
9:43 |
: Up and down interlude.
|
9:43 |
ROS Coco or Bourn? |
9:44 |
: Bourn stealing a bit less, Crisp has more power, more injury prone. Still Bourn for me, but if you give me Crisp and an upgrade, might do it.
|
9:44 |
Looking to sell high on Matt Moore in an AL keeper league. Do you agree, and who’s a good AL hitter to target? |
9:44 |
: can’t tell you a random target, but yeah Moore’s a sell high if he can’t figure out his control.
|
9:44 |
Should Ibanez be owned in all leagues? |
9:44 |
: Eh. I mean. Eh.
|
9:45 |
Start or Bench Kluber V Orioles today? |
9:45 |
: in Baltimore? With a history of tough HR/FB numbers? I’m sitting him.
|
9:45 |
I tried to trade Puig for Cain and was TURNED DOWN! |
9:46 |
: That’s cause that person is reading all the people saying to sell high and not really thinking about it, imo.
|
9:46 |
I hope you’re not saying that Johnny Cash did ‘Hurt’ better than NIN. |
9:46 |
: I am, and I like both versions. Cash’s version was so different it blew my mind. Like when I heard that Greek knockoff version of Billie Jean and finally understood the lyrics.
|
9:46 |
If Hultzen gets in 5 solid starts at Tacoma, will he get promoted? |
9:47 |
: It’s a race between him and Tai and Erasmo. Maybe the Mariners admit defeat and trade off their veteran starters. What a mess.
|
9:47 |
Any change Josh Hamilton or Mike Morse will turn it around in the second half? They’ve been killing me this year. |
9:47 |
: I don’t have much hope for either, given their plate discipline.

Will Nolasco (on the Dodgers where he apparently will be traded today) or Straily a better option RoS? |
9:48 |
: Nolasco. I like Straily, looking forward to an interview with him, but the fastball makes him a homer issue on the road, and his approach may need a little refining. Good secondary stuff though.
|
9:48 |
When will harvey hit his innings limit mid august? |
9:48 |
: no real limit. 190+ innings.
|
9:48 |
Cespedes: are the BB% decline (8-7.5%) and K% increase (18.9-24.6) concerns a little overblown and really it’s just the low LD rate (19.6-14.4% and related babip dip .326-.244) that’s really depressing his production so far? |
9:49 |
: 24.6% is a big number. That’s the one that bothers me. His swSTR was too high for his K% last year. It’s the one thing that bothers me about Puig too. But Puig is younger, so more likely to improve K%/swSTR, and also I believe he’ll steal more because of his age.
|
9:49 |
Wil Myers has one walk. Is he just the new Francouer? |
9:49 |
: Come on now. You have seen his MiLB numbers.
|
9:50 |
was that a picture of your mom? kudos |
9:50 |
: YOUR ANGER IS MISDIRECTED.
|
9:50 |
vogelsong have any value when he returns? |
9:50 |
: deep league.
|
9:50 |
Deduno or Guthrie in FGTG today? |
9:50 |
: Guthrie or neither.
|
9:51 |
What are the highest rated BeerGraphs beers that are readily available in NYC? |
9:51 | : and probably a lot of these |
9:52 |
jeez now it’s a gang feud |
9:52 |
: hey now, I said you’d come back swinging. not at me.
|
9:53 |
Puig translated to English is Puig. Puig translated to Arabic is ???? |
9:53 |
My college roomate introduced me to Brian Eno the year you were born. I loved him. Did he do the awesome song Elephant Talk (I’ve burned a lot of brain cells since then and have kids and no time to listen to my old music). |
9:53 |
im more of a silent, brooding hater, myself |
9:53 |
: I laughed, I reminisced, I grew fearful. #interlude
|
9:54 |
Besides CarGo, my OF are middling. Which two would you start for the rest of the year: Jennings, Crisp, Cespedes, Gardner? |
9:54 |
: I love your outfield. Crisp when healthy. Gardner v RHP, Jennings v LHP. play the platoons.
|
9:54 |
What’s the LOWEST beer wins you’ve consumed in a day? I would assume in college you got like a -30 from natty ice or something. |
9:54 |
: I drank better beer in college than I did playing pong with my wife at her business school functions.
|
9:55 |
Wheeler or Cole? I already have Harvey? |
9:55 |
: Cole pretty much for me. Despite the low Ks.
|
9:55 |
Blanco or Span ROS? |
9:55 |
: In an OBP league, you might go Blanco actually. But the Ks say Span in BA leagues.
|
9:55 |
![]() The percentage owned discrepancy is a bit funny, yes? |
9:56 |
: I’d want to see their BABIPs.
|
9:56 |
If you had to choose, Liriano or Klubler? |
9:56 |
: Liriano.
|
9:56 |
Does Bailey regain the closers job? |
9:56 |
: Or hits the DL.
|
9:56 |
Swisher also has the shoulder issue. I own him in a league. But now I don’t want to. |
9:56 |
Speaking of Neil Walker, he’s a platoon player that’s just too popular to platoon in Pittsburgh, right? |
9:56 |
: Switch hitter. I’d have to look at his career splits, but I’d be surprised if that was the case.
|
9:56 |
Any reason to pick up and stash Gary Brown? Dudes on fire! |
9:57 |
: With Pagan out all year, this is not crazy. Juan Perez is fun, but could be exposed with more play. His plate discipline is not good.
|
9:57 |
What do you think will happen when Beachy returns to the Braves? Would they really send Teheran down/to the pen? |
9:57 |
: That’s my thought. they want to limit his IP anyway, most likely.
|
9:57 |
Domonic Brown shows little to no discernible weakness versus LHPs in his splits. Was the caution shown by the organization overblown, or are we seeing the fruits of his mechanical labors? |
9:58 |
: I think the new swing helped him a lot in this regard. His hands are now in a ready position faster, which means he can turn on inside pitches from lefties quicker.
|
9:58 |
THE Gregorius D.I.D.(i), you are welcome to join The Brotherhood against Juan Pierres Mustache. The only requirement is your un-dying loyalty to Lucas Duda. |
9:58 |
Am I making you uncomfortable? What, is it my mustache? I can’t believe you don’t like to be touched by a grown man. |
9:58 |
I believe there’s a Squatch in these woods… |
9:59 |
: started out a little conventional perhaps, but then it got weird. I approve.
|
9:59 |
Mets make any moves at the deadline (Murphy, Parnell, Marcum, etc.)? Any specific moves you’d like to see them make? |
10:00 |
: I doubt they trade those guys. If anyone wants Marcum, they’ll take a a long-shot oF prospect for him probably. Or maybe a low-ceiling useful young OF. Point is, OF. Personally, if a team were to give the mets a great young OF, I’d part with Parnell and Murphy.
|
10:00 |
Many moons ago, I asked you if I should drop Espinosa for Segura. You said yes. Espinosa is now hitting .106 in AAA and Segura is Segura. Thanks again. My occasional reminder to you all that Eno does get it right some times. |
10:00 |
: Sometimes.
|
10:00 |
Where do the questions go that don’t get answered? |
10:01 |
: into the ether. Or this hundreds-long queue that I’m trying to sort through. There.
|
10:01 |
Who do I grab as my 5th OF? Martin, Blanks, Moss or Werth? |
10:01 |
: Martin or Werth depending on power/speed needs. Werth overall.
|
10:01 |
I have Iwakuma for cheap in an AL-only keeper league and I am in contention for 1st. Should I keep him to aid in my run down the stretch or sell him to a struggling team looking for keepers? |
10:02 |
: There’s a bit of an IP/health risk with him. I’d at least run him up the flagpole.
|
10:02 |
Drop a pitcher, Haren or Anderson? |
10:02 |
: Haren.
|
10:02 |
His Derek Holland for my Jim Johnson? |
10:02 |
: I would.
|
10:02 |
Scott Kazmir = Fools gold or the real deal? |
10:03 |
: Velocity is real, homer and walk issues back too. I’d spot-start him at home and in Oakland, that sort of thing. I know Oakland’s O is not bad, my point is: power-suppressing parks.
|
10:03 |
So, do I stay home to watch Greinke’s start tonight (research of some sort), or go to a concert? The band is The World Inferno Friendship Society. I don’t listen to them much, but their shows are usually a lot of fun. |
10:03 |
mlb.tv. then you can see as much of game as you want, later.
: This is why you buy |
10:04 |
I know you said you suck at math now, but I am going to ask a mathy question anyway. It seems clear that player valuation should change from league to league throughout the year, depending on the distibution of stats in each league. For example, hr might be tightly contested in one league, but not another. Do you adjust for this in the leagues you play and is there any way to quantify how valuation should change? |
10:05 |
: I do that intuitively, and it becomes obvious fairly quickly in trade talks. As for doing it in a mathy way… yes, there could be a way to input your league stats and look at the impact an FA or trade acq would make. I believe Bloomberg’s old Front Office did that.
|
10:05 |
Can Erlin be up for good now? I mean they keep saying spot starts, and sure his potential isn’t ace, but a high floor control guy? Think the padres leave him in the rotation? |
10:05 |
: Best option for now. I streamed him last night and super happy about it, but next start if he stays is in Boston, so I dropped him.
|
10:05 |
Today I told my 2 year old son about the days when Lester was a good pitcher. He looked shocked. Perhaps it was his gas, but I still think it was my story. Sad day. |
10:06 |
: The kind of gas that comes out of our babies IS shocking.
|
10:06 |
Hanley or Beltre for 3B ROS? Next 3 years? |
10:06 |
: Beltre. Hanley might inch ahead in next three years due to age.
|
10:06 |
For all the Joe Maddon love why doesn’t he use McGee in the 8th over Peralta? McGee has more velo and is not a cheater. Makes no sense to me. What about you? |
10:07 |
: Sometimes usage does not predict closer changes. It happened with Tazawa this year. I think a few more good innings will increase the trust in mcGee.
|
10:07 |
just remember that previous page and previous entries are the opposite. i never know which is which though so it’s a guessing game between those two, and lucas duda is on the DL and it makes me happy that maxamuz is sad though not so happy because generally it’s always sad that a guy is physically damaged because life and health are important to humans |
10:07 |
: thank you!
|
10:07 |
Question on Billy Butler. you say he is a true talent 280 hitter…the last 4 years his average is about .306? Can you please explain the gap? Appreciate it, as always. |
10:08 |
: good point. I just meant this year. Cause a .340 BABIP seems like it’s out of reach for him. And if you put his .300 BABIPs together with his lower power years, you get .280-.290 IMO. Better than now, not as good as last year.
|
10:09 |
Starlin Castro: lost season or still something useful? |
10:09 |
: Still something useful. They just in his head probably, talking about plate discipline. Might just be a grip it and rip it guy.
|
10:09 |
Might Ruby DLR get the call in Beantown soon? |
10:09 |
: I don’t think he’s up to five innings at a time yet.
|
10:09 |
Aybar or Jhonny Peralta ROS? |
10:09 |
: Aybar, grudgingly.
|
10:09 |
Ludes can’t be up and down, their always downers. |
10:10 |
Don Juan, my advice: wear a headband (you don’t want sweat in your eyes), wear a wife beater (allows others to smell how bad you smell, they won’t want to guard you closely), wear goggles (doesn’t matter if you don’t wear glasses), wear knee high socks (duh why not). |
10:10 |
I ordered my Corey Kluber Society bumper sticker today. It’s not going on my car, but I had to have one. |
10:10 |
: Yes but Lude.
|
10:10 |
Have we ever figured out the deal with the Vernon Wells trade? Is there some crazy way the Yankees saved an extra 2 million that they can use for next year’s under 189 deal? |
10:11 |
: There was some deal that he would have zero impact on their cap situation next year. I remember that.
|
10:11 |
Reznor said Cash did Hurt better than NIN. |
10:11 |
: Well then there’s that too.
|
10:11 |
Any more impact pitching prospects this seas? |
10:11 |
: One of the Seattle guys?
|
10:12 |
If your crystal ball cleared for but a moment.. who is the first guy getting traded at the trading deadline? |
10:12 |
: Bud Norris. Houston going to get out in front of Milwaukee, trading it’s ace.
|
10:12 |
Ian Kennedy, since dropped due to the suspension, should be owned, right? |
10:12 |
: yes. I think his control will improve (F-strike good, career good).
|
10:12 |
Is The Bartender on his way back? Two clean innings. I wasn’t able to see them with my own eyes, so I just don’t know if his snapper is back or the heater under control? Any feedback on this? |
10:13 |
: I watched em. Looked a little better. Then they took him out v a LHB in a close game. I do think he’ll get the job back. Could be soon.
|
10:13 |
The Downward Spiral is an amazing album. I told my girlfriend’s just turned 15 year old sister that she wasn’t ready for it yet. She didn’t listen. It blew her mind. |
10:13 |
Three Days Grace once said they’d “rather feel pain than nothing at all”. Is there truth in this? |
10:13 |
Candied yams don’t taste like candy. I feel cheated. |
10:13 |
: Laughing.
|
10:13 |
Buy or sell tesla motors? |
10:14 |
: They look healthy here in Menlo Park. People in there every day, new ones on the street all the time, and a wait list a mile long.
|
10:14 |
i always felt like my thursdays at work were CRAZY BUSY but then i realized it’s because i spend hours doing this and then have tons of work when it ends |
10:14 |
: apologies.
|
10:14 |
Prettiest hair in baseball? Huh? C’mon? |
10:14 |
: No love for Yu? Asdrubal? CJ Wilson loves his hair.
|
10:15 |
Wil Meyers or Nick Franklin Ros? |
10:15 |
: This year, Franklin. Myers, especially in OBP leagues, as he improves his K%.
|
10:15 |
Does Cuddyer fall off the face of the earth in the 2nd half, or still remain decently productive? |
10:15 |
: if he’s healthy, Cuddyer should be fine.
|
10:15 |
I take it back, the best version of Hurt was Kermit the Frog’s. It’s on youtube. It’s disturbing. |
10:15 |
: huh.
|
10:15 |
im not angry, i just make jokes without considering whether they are hurtful |
10:16 |
: no, no, it’s fine. we’re all riffing.
|
10:16 |
Is PUIG the new FRANCOEUR? |
10:16 |
: No f’ing way. Hate that comp. Frenchy never showed double digit walk rates in the minors. Frenchy never had a season like Puig was putting up in Double-A.
|
10:16 |
I can’t be the only person in the chat who knows about the lyrical difference in “Hurt” between Reznor and Cash… |
10:17 |
: Ooh, I knew there was one. Do tell.
|
10:17 |
OH MAN i just remembered the beer store is holding a bottle of Stone RuinTen for me |
10:17 |
: happy thing to remember.
|
10:18 |
Ichiro looking solid last few weeks. Worth dropping someone like David Freese at UTIL? |
10:18 |
: I’d keep Freese for trade value alone, myself. He’s still capable of .280/20, and an injury could make that valuable in the right league. But I do have more hope for Ichiro now.
|
10:18 |
it’s extremely difficult to carry on a coherent feud in this sort of chat. that said, incoherence makes it more fun anyway |
10:19 |
“Fact”: All fantasy teams in last place become obsessed with ‘Down In It’ by NIN…as they realize it perfectly describes their season… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrcTsxs-anU |
10:19 |
I’ve got Matt Carpenter, Matt Harvey, Matt Garza, and Mat Latos on my fantasy team. I must be on to something… |
10:19 |
: ALL THE MATTS
|
10:19 |
Does Montero return to relevance in the 2nd half? |
10:19 |
: Yes. Don’t see a reason he has to fall off the face.
|
10:19 |
Yeah…Cash doesn’t curse in his version |
10:19 |
: Ah. That makes sense.
|
10:20 |
Adam Lind sucked for three years, but is now good. What gives? |
10:20 |
: One part seeing fewer LHPs, one part swinging less, one part swinging less hard. Did an interview with him, and I believe he can .190 ISO and show good plate disicpline with his new approach.
|
10:21 |
Boujous ros stat line |
10:21 |
: .280 with 8/25 pace.
|
10:21 |
How much more intimidating would Jeff Samardzija be if he grew a mullet? All he needs is the bangs. |
10:21 |
: Then he’d win best hair in a landslide.
|
10:21 |
Luis Mendoza has something to say about the prettiest hair question. |
10:21 |
I refuse to believe that any actual professional baseball players are in this chat |

Adrian Ballew of King Crimson = Elephant Talk. Martin Perez worth activating? |
10:22 |
: I don’t love Perez. Any Texas pitcher walking a tightrope anyway.
|
10:22 |
Rutlege, Mercer, or Weeks for 2B? |
10:22 |
: Weeks.
|
10:23 |
If the benches clear in this JPM vs. MAXAMUZ tuffle, I’ll be staying in the pen. |
10:23 |
: Just making that clear. I’ll be swinging with my right hand. cause thumb.
|
10:23 |
De Fratus or Bastardo once Paplebon gets dealt? |
10:24 |
: That’s the question. The lefty with the better K rate or the righty with more gas? Pretty much splits my predictors down the middle. So I go with usage… and DeFratus has the eighth and Bastardo got the last save. Bastardo by a nose?
|
10:25 |
Who will pitch 1st Cobb or Beachy? |
10:25 |
: Man it’s looking like Beachy these days.
|
10:25 |
Tell Jordan that Arabic has no “P” sound. It would be pronounced “Buig.” |
10:25 |
: Glad we got that straight.
|
10:25 |
Marte/Fowler/Jennings? |
10:25 |
: Marte/Jennings
|
10:25 |
Eno, what’s the current (new) replacement level and what’s the RAR to WAR conversion? |
10:26 |
: I don’t have that off the top of my head. Well, I know the RL that FG and B-R agreed on is .294 for some reason.
|
10:26 |
A moment of silence for all the good thumbs lost. |
10:26 |
: Mine’s getting real tired…
|
10:26 |
chase headley ros? does he turn it around second half and become a top 10 3b or is this who he is? |
10:26 |
: I like him to turn it around.
|
10:27 |
Hanley’s SS rank ROS? What about Starlin? |
10:27 |
: Still top five for both.
|
10:27 |
How do you rank there dregs in a re-draft – Blanton, Buehrle, Doubront, Edwin jackson and Pettitte? Thanks man! |
10:27 |
: Pettite first. uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Buehrle?
|
10:27 |
Lucroy or Perez? |
10:27 |
: Lucroy has more power, doesn’t depend on a great BABIP for value.
|
10:28 |
Should I assume that Tommy Hanson will never be any good again? |
10:28 |
: yes.
|
10:28 |
Who receives more consistent playing time in the second half, Leonys Martin or Peter Bourjos? I lust for steals… |
10:28 |
: Well Martin’s is consistent, just always v RHP. I don’t like that Bourjos hurt his hammy this year. I’ll take Martin by a nose. If you can put on bench.
|
10:28 |
Bottles or Cans? |
10:29 |
: Just clap your hands.
|
10:29 |
I can either remember Felix Doubront or get drunk and kill that brain cell where he will be remembered. Suggestion? |
10:29 |
: Kill it. I know he has the good K rate, but the velo down to 90ish.
|
10:30 |
drop andrus for j.peralta in a dynasty? |
10:30 |
: No! Just on age alone.
|
10:30 |
Most to least important factor in a fantasy question: redraft/keeper/dynasty, league size, league categories (and other major ones I missed) |
10:30 |
: categories over size, maybe. and both over keeper. I want to say keeper question is huge, but for most part, we should all be playing for this year.
|
10:31 |
Szymborski said the other day that LeMahieu had the thirteenth best odds of hitting .300 this year. Do I play him and believe, or should we storm the ZiPS supercomputer with baseball bats? |
10:31 |
: He’s smarter than I, but in fantasy, it’s not like DJLM will do much else even if he does hit .300. I’m passing.
|
10:31 |
Any worries about Anibal’s shoulder ROS? Or do you think he’ll be fine? |
10:31 |

10:32 |

10:32 |
: Brewery for practical reasons — less travel.
|

what does Detroit do, trade for closer, use Benoit or call up Rondon |
10:32 |
: Trade.
|
10:32 |
Would you trade Wheeler and Pence for Darvish? In a vacuum |
10:32 |
: Yes.
|
10:33 |

With a phone full of pictures of pitchers' fingers, strange beers, and his two toddler sons, Eno Sarris can be found at the ballpark or a brewery most days. Read him here, writing about the A's or Giants at The Athletic, or about beer at October. Follow him on Twitter @enosarris if you can handle the sandwiches and inanity.
If the Crew truely is in rebuild mode, what type of value would Braun return given everything surrounding him? Assuming that he’s healthy and able to return soon.
