Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 6/27/13

8:46
Eno Sarris: I’m sure my thumb will be fine in 15 minutes. *cuts thumb off* See you soon!

9:00
Eno Sarris: These are probably super easy, but lyrics of the day are injury-themed, appropriately:

I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar’s chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair

9:00
Comment From V
Just wanted to say thanks for doing this chat every week. It’s both highly informative and extremely fun at the same time.

9:00
Eno Sarris: AND I”M DOING IT IN PAIN

9:00
Comment From Richard III
My kingdom for a thumb.

9:00
Comment From JEB
pain in thumb whilst typing might be the biggest first world problem ever

9:00
Eno Sarris: and from pickup ball too

Comment From Mark
Brandon Belt in Colorado feel like a good weekend stream?

9:01
Eno Sarris: Yeah and he’s swinging it pretty good, even though there’s no such thing as a hot streak.

9:01
Comment From HTD
Thoughts on Nathan Eovaldi’s new fastball? Think he has a chance to sustain it?

9:01
Eno Sarris: Sure but fastball velocity was never his problem. What’s his third pitch.

9:01
Comment From Zach
Carlos Martinez:
1)will be called up within next 2-3 weeks, right?
2) Percent chance he stays in rotation till at least 9/1? He has 48 innings in right now, he pitched 104 in 2012. 134-48=86. 86/6 (inning/start) = 14 starts. 14 * 5 = 70 games. I think he makes it easily if he is their 5th starter coming out of the break, right?
3) Him or Wheeler ROS from time CM comes up if I need K’s and W’s?

9:02
Eno Sarris: They are holding Wacha’s innings down because they think they might need him at the end of the year. That makes me think that Wacha is next in line, and I’d want Wheeler, if only as upside play on bench. (not starting him until I see the tipping end, and a nice two- or three-walk game.

9:02
Comment From HTD
Why has Teheran only thrown his changeup around 5% of the time? Wasn’t it consistently rated as his best pitch when he was a prospect?

9:02
Eno Sarris: IT’s a mystery. Right now, he’s sinker/slider, and that’s not a sustainable combination.

9:03
Comment From austin
earlier in the season I traded jason heyward and jaime garcia (when he was hot, before he was injured) for joey votto. i also traded headley and trumbo for yu, which i was able to do since i had aramis and hanley for backup at 3rd. how good should i feel right now?

9:03
Eno Sarris: pretty f’ing good

9:03
Comment From Greg
Is Rickie Weeks potentially the best buy-low option of the season?

9:03
Eno Sarris: And Heyward maybe.

9:03
Comment From RetireNutting
were you named after Brian Eno?

9:03
Eno Sarris: Yup! And born in 1979, so I was named after glam rock Brian Eno, and then he did all that other stuff.

9:03
Comment From Milhouse
My mclouth for his laroche? Obp league. What side you like?

9:03
Eno Sarris: McLouth. More categories.

9:03
Comment From Joe hogan
Is Lincecum droppanle

9:04
Eno Sarris: Sure. In shallower leagues. I’m holding on for dear life in a 14-team k/9 league. But I’ve thought about it.

9:04
Comment From Dexter
Who closes if/when Gregg & Papelbon are traded?

9:06
Eno Sarris: Oh no, don’t even want to think about Chicago with Gregg gone. I don’t believe in Russell, obviously, since he’s a LOOGY really. Maybe Parker. In Philly, I like Bastardo (got last save when guys were out) and then DeFratus. DeFratus a righty, so it could be him. But Bastardo has the K rate.

9:06
Comment From Kevin
Erasmo Ramiez or Cory Kluber. Who you got?

9:06
Eno Sarris: The guy in the bigs now.

9:06
Comment From JEB
What beer pairs best with a Puig homerun?

9:06
Eno Sarris: Something bold and brash. LIke a Green Flash West Coast IPA that just hits you in the MOUF.

9:06
Comment From Fish
Oh man, I haven’t been here in a few weeks. Did I miss anything?

9:06
Comment From Maxamuz

The Baseball Gods have not been kind to Lucas Duda this week. He is on the DL with a strained left intercostal. SAY IT AIN'T SO ENO! I blame this on Juan Pierres Mustache!!

9:07
Eno Sarris: Yo missed the beginning of a blood feud.

9:07
Comment From Yovani Gallardo
I pretty much suck now, huh?

9:07
Eno Sarris: Too many two-seamers.

9:07
Comment From Eddie
Instead of his surface numbers regressing towards his peripherals, Edwin Jackson’s peripherals have just gotten worse. What on Earth am I supposed to do with this guy?!

9:07
Eno Sarris: Drop him. Seriously. I think his upside is 4/1.3 with ok k/9.

9:07
Comment From T-bone
Trying to trade King Felix away for prospects/young players in Otto pts. Have the option of Bogaerts and Arcia, Cole and Baez(maybe Yelich instead), or Taveras and Archie Bradley/Corbin. Any of those a fair return? Which do you like most?

9:08
Eno Sarris: Bogaerts side probably. I like Taveras/Corbin, but the pitching side is probably not as high-ceiling as Arcia, and the Cards take forever with their prospects. Bogaerts has a chance at 3b like right now.

9:08
Comment From Das Otter
With an older player like Ortiz, should I be selling high while his production is (semi) amazing? I’m worried about his yearly injury derailing his season.

9:08
Eno Sarris: In a keeper league for sure. In a redraft… he’s usually good when the team is good, and the team is good.

9:08
Comment From Mark
Shipyard was good. See what you mean about the IPAs but Monkey Fist was pretty decent.

9:09
Eno Sarris: Everything is better at the brewery! But did not like those IPAs.

9:09
Comment From JEB
I was trading Puig for Shields/H. Bailey when I read your article on him and backed out. I hope I don’t regret it.

9:09
Eno Sarris: That’s decent actually. I was just saying I wouldn’t trade Puig for the buy-low guys, where there’s a question about health (like Kemp).

9:09
Comment From West Coast IPA
how did you get involved with fangraphs?

9:09
Eno Sarris: Applied for RotoGraphs. And I hire often.

9:10
Comment From Mr. Wrestling IV
How much does the Bundy TJ news hurt his keeper value?

9:10
Eno Sarris: A lot. Now you have to wait another year and a half to see him. I might buy-low if buying low means really cheap.

9:10
Comment From Greg
Better fantasy starter ROS – Colome or Archer?

9:10
Eno Sarris: Archer. Not sure Colome always knows where it’s going.

9:11
Comment From Jordan

Thumbs up Eno

9:11
Eno Sarris: It’s so big and black and blue right now.

9:11
Comment From Matt
Is Matt Weiters just not that good as a fantasy catcher?

9:11
Eno Sarris: But pretty damn good as a real-life one.

9:11
Comment From Matt
What do you think of targeting Braun for next year? Does his injury, suspension risk, and in my keeper league a high salary make him someone I should stay away from?

9:11
Eno Sarris: His suspension, if it happens, and I don’t think it will, will probably be over in time to have a good season next year. But what about his SBs? Could be the salary that matters the most.

9:12
Comment From Cleon
Mitch Moreland worth owning in a shallow league?

9:12
Eno Sarris: Eh. I mean sure, I like him, but I don’t quite trust him v LHP yet.

9:12
Comment From Greg
Which closers are most likely to lose their jobs at the trade deadline?

9:12
Eno Sarris: Benoit, Gregg, Papelbon.

9:12
Comment From Carl
Eno- is LoCain about to lose his gig to Lough and Dyson?

9:13
Eno Sarris: Maybe a platoon, but I doubt a full-on lost job. He’s a better player, true-talent, then Dyson, who’s a one-tooler.

9:13
Comment From BourbonCountySheriff
Please rank your top 3 closer speculation pickup!

9:15
Eno Sarris: Tom Wilhelmsen (if he was dropped haha), Luke Gregerson, Jake McGee, Junichi Tazawa, Dalte Thayer, Blake Parker. Rex Brothers is better than most on talent, but I think Rox will hold Raffy since they in contention. Trevor Rosenthal is still on my radar, but damn. Mujica still doing it with 65% splitters.

9:15
Comment From upton bros
we were better apart.

9:15
Eno Sarris: Song title.

9:15
Comment From Andrew
You ok?

9:16
Eno Sarris: Just hoping it’s not broken.

9:16
Comment From Mr. Wrestling IV
Take that gangrene!

9:16
Eno Sarris: or that.

9:16
Comment From Razor
What’s the highest beer wins you’ve drank in a day? I’ve pulled off a 3-way trade for heady topper AND zombie dust, and think I may break 100 wins on that day.

9:16
Eno Sarris: Went to Russian River for Pliny the Younger. Had three of them, and then all their sours. That was probably a 100-win day!

9:16
Comment From Built Like the Mets
Need outfield help in my 6×6 roto league. Please eval: Rios/Crisp for Minor/Frazier.

9:17
Eno Sarris: I want Rios/Crisp side. But there’s obviously needs involved here.

9:17
Comment From Guest
Was that audio of The Hawk you posted at NG recorded on the first phonograph?

9:17
Eno Sarris: Hah. My computer made the sounds out loud and then recorded them, so it was a bit incestuous. I’m sure that added some reverb.

9:17
Comment From Goat
EEEE-NOOO!! Noticed Alex Rios has lost 20 feet from his HR+FB distance this year, yet still posting similar HR/FB ratio. Anything to do with the chilly weather this year in Chicago and are worries outweighed by chance he gets moved pre deadline? Also are you starting Lester tonight v TOR?

9:17
Eno Sarris: I think he’s still good to go.

9:17
Comment From pudieron89
Hanley is showing some nice production right now, worth a buy-high before he becomes a buy-higher?

9:18
Eno Sarris: Worth checking to see if Hanley owner found another shortstop in the meantime. Might have a surplus that fits your needs. I do like hanley.

9:18
Comment From mix
Do you enjoy watching the All Star Game and its associated circus?

9:18
Eno Sarris: Not especially. They are trying 75% at best.

9:18
Comment From Greg
Who’s your favorite player in real baseball that isn’t very good in fantasy?

9:18
Eno Sarris: Simmons maybe. Still have love in my heart for Duda, amazingly. Just a real nice guy.

9:18
Comment From Sirras One
Is this the year the Pirates end over .500? Looked like last year was going to be the year around this time…

9:18
Eno Sarris: yes.

9:19
Comment From pudieron89
why is the beergraphs link in your tagline dead?

9:19
Eno Sarris: Gah I thought I fixed that. will do it again.

Some interloper stole my handle when I was on vacaation last week and posted pure madness. I am glad to say that I am back actively chatting today and will post only diluted madness.

9:19
Comment From bdhudson
hurt – NIN

9:19
Eno Sarris: someone else did it better interlude

9:19
Comment From Leibniz
Do you think there’s a true talent level for math? Or can most people succeed at it if they work hard enough.

9:20
Eno Sarris: I used to be good (three years of calculus in high school) but now I’m bad (see any of my posts). So that might mean something.

9:20
Comment From NapolisDeadHips
Eno, in Boston, any good east coast Saisons that you’ve had and would recommend?

9:20
Eno Sarris: Saison Dupont is the one for you. they have an unfiltered one too. Out of cooperstown. Hennepin from Ommegang is good.

9:20
Comment From NapolisDeadHips
Anything that makes you think Hamels turns it around, or are you selling on him anyway you can at this point?

9:21
Eno Sarris: I’ll put it this way: I don’t see anything that tells me he *won’t* turn it around.

9:21
Comment From Jim
Can you rank these four outfielders ROS: D. Brown, Jennings, Pence, Marte. How about as keepers?

9:22
Eno Sarris: this year: Pence/Jennings/Marte/Brown. Keepers: Jennings/Marte/Brown/Pence. Pence is having a great season but he’s old and I wouldn’t depend on those SBs continuing. Brown is good, but I think more of a true talent .275/25/5 guy, Marte and Jennings have more speed. Case to be made for Marte over Jennings. Maybe I’d swithc those.

9:22
Comment From Razor
THE MONTELL JORDAN GUESSES ARE OFF, BECAUSE I KNOW IT’S “HURT!” Didi or Iglesias ROS?

9:22
Eno Sarris: Didi

9:22
Comment From RetireNutting
also, are all Pirates fans like me waiting for Fangraphs to feature an article that tells us whether we can believe in this team or not? or is that just me?

9:22
Eno Sarris: that piece was already written

9:22
Comment From Ted
Do you predict Shelby Miller will be shut down later in the season? If so, when would you guess?

9:23
Eno Sarris: Nah, I mean maybe a start or two off so they can use in postseason, but not a real limit/shutdown situation.

9:23
Comment From Lane
Please rank in order of best bet for saves moving forward: Benoit, Putz, Uehara or Cishek?

9:23
Eno Sarris: Putz, Cishek, Benoit, Uehara.

9:23
Comment From thomas
Dynasty league: Howard for Shields? Howard rides my bench.

9:23
Eno Sarris: YES.

9:23
Comment From Maxamuz
Question is are you listening to the NIN version or Johnny Cash version?

9:23
Eno Sarris: exactly. Love the Cash one.

9:23
Comment From Mr. Wrestling IV
What is one to do with V-Mart?

9:23
Eno Sarris: Wait.

9:23
Comment From David
Trent Reznor. Someone just dropped Derek Holland in my 10*mixed … this is a valid (and slam dunk) use of my waiver priority yes?

9:23
Eno Sarris: yes.

9:24
Comment From MBM
Any reason to worry about Derek Holland? His underlying numbers seem alright, but the results haven’t been there lately.

9:24
Eno Sarris: just a tough stretch.

9:24
Comment From Maxamuz
My Grandfather once met Johnny Cash at a bar and shook his hand. Now they are both dead but their story lives on.

9:24
Eno Sarris: LUDE!

9:24
Comment From Erasmo Ramirez
Am I coming up anytime soon?

9:25
Eno Sarris: Yes I do believe he is. But we won’t know until he’s up. Might be waiting for injury to one of the vets.

9:25
Comment From Jordan
What’s the deal with Anthony Rendon? Will he continue to be high avg/OBP+low power? His splits in minors suggest otherwise but I don’t understand how power could disappear between the minors and the majors.

9:25
Eno Sarris: Power takes the longest to stabilize. And I do think his true talent power level is up for discussion.

9:25
Comment From Matt (Steinway)
Johnny Cash version or Nine in Nails version? Do you agree with how Collins/Buck called Wheeler’s game the other day? Pitch tipping aside, I felt like every time he got to two strikes on a hitter, they called for breaking pitches that he couldn’t locate and the Sox wouldn’t swing at. Why not let him work the fastball when it’s on and pick the spots for breaking pitches?

9:26
Eno Sarris: I think the Mets — perhaps rightfully — sometimes focus on development at the big league level too. Think of Harvey and his changeup. They kept calling for him to throw it more until they were shouted down and his performance made it obvious he was fine with a show-me/occasional change. Wheeler needs to show more until they stop screwing with him.

9:26
Comment From John V.
Arcia? This kid legit?

9:27
Eno Sarris: Has power. Plate discipline leaves me cold, like he might have a bad BA.

9:27
Comment From Danny
How important is a third pitch to you? Rays’ Jake McGee got by with FB/CH for a while and broke down, now he’s added slider to great success… could that be Marmol’s problem?

9:27
Eno Sarris: Third pitch bigger deal for starters. Usually relievers can get by. Although look at Capps, he could use a changeup. Lefties still hit him well.

9:27
Comment From An Optimistic Fan
Thoughts on Seattle minor league SS Brad Miller? I like him. A lot. does he get called up and hit this year?

9:28
Eno Sarris: A little worried about staying at short, but I do think he could come up soon. It’s not like the guy at short right now is wowing them.

9:28
Comment From THE Gregorius D.I.D.(i)
ESPN players alert: Edwin Encarnacion gained 3B eligibility last night!

9:28
Comment From Bird Man
a lot of fantasy experts have been employing this “live chat” now, just wanted to say i think you do it best and are the gold standard for fantasy live chats

9:28
Eno Sarris: Not quite a new thing, but I’ll take the compliment.

9:28
Comment From Ted
WHere will Wilin Rosario finish the season ranked among catchers?

9:28
Eno Sarris: Top three.

9:29
Comment From Steve
Guess I can stop asking if I should hold on to Tex.

9:29
Eno Sarris: In a keeper league? Only if you keep double-digits. I’ll keep him on my DL in my keep25 until I need the slot.

9:29
Comment From Matt M
Is John Lackey’s miraculous run sustainable? Because it looks sustainable, but I’m having a hard time trusting…

9:29
Eno Sarris: I think he can high-threes ERA with a 7k9 like he used to.

9:29
Comment From Built Like the Mets
Jurickson Profar: Destined to be a shiny ornamental bauble on my keeper league bench for the rest of this season?

9:29
Eno Sarris: Old team, there will be another injury.

9:30
Comment From An Optimistic Fan
Who is better for fantasy, Ellsbury or Aoki and why?

9:30
Eno Sarris: ellsbury because Aoki’s CS suggests he’ll steal less often. Also, he had three sub-20 SB seasons in Japan before coming over.

9:30
Comment From 2ndHS
Rickie Weeks is 11th in wOBA and wRC+ among qualified 2B and tied for 5th in HR among all 2B. I believed in him!

9:31
Eno Sarris: well those aren’t fantasy cats, but he usually comes around. I just can’t own low-batting-average guys. Once you start losing in that category, you can’t get it back.

9:31
Comment From Keeper? I hardly know her
Robert Stephenson or George Springer in a H2H keeper league? I have a weak outfield and older starting pitchers.

9:31
Eno Sarris: I’d probably take Stephenson. I’m worried about Springer’s K%.

9:31
Comment From Jordan

Yup

9:32
Eno Sarris: I mean can you believe it. my mom’s a bit strange.

9:32

Who is the better starter available at the deadline, Nolasco or Garza? My friend–who is a Cubs fan–says Garza… is he way too biased, or kind of right?

I blame Juan Pierre’s Mustache for all fantasy maladies now…it’s great

9:33
Eno Sarris: Hey let’s not all jump in on JPM.

9:33
Comment From dude
I never seen a one sided feud before…but Maxamuz has managed to pull it off. I have yet to see any evidence that Juan Pierre’s mustache actually cares about the call outs from Maxamuz. It is truly a sad day when our society can’t hate one another over trivial things.

9:33
Eno Sarris: We’ll see about this.

9:33
Comment From THE Gregorius D.I.D.(i)
w/ Brett Anderson out until “at least” August is he at all a worthwhile DL stash for a hope at a good Sept. for H2h playoffs?

9:33
Eno Sarris: I still like him…

9:33
Comment From An Optimistic Fan
Will Nick Swisher ever hit again? (same goes for Cespedes and Willingham).

9:34
Eno Sarris: I’ll take the youngest guy in the group. One thing about Swish is that he changed home park power environments pretty drastically.

9:34
Comment From Chris
Are you a Nick Franklin believer, long-term?

9:34
Eno Sarris: Yes! Maybe a little better than Neil Walker.

9:34
Comment From LarryA
In the spring you told us to use up SP inning while the weather was cold. Should we now be saving some innings for when the rosters expand? Do good SPs do better in September?

9:35
Eno Sarris: Man. I need to look into that. September analysis is tough, but you have to think some pitchers get the AAAA lineup some days.

9:35
Comment From Joe
Billy Butler: wha’ happen? No power and a BABIP of .320. Tentative buy low? Rather have him or Heyward at UTIL?

9:35
Eno Sarris: He’s a true talent .280/20-25 guy. Still can do it.

9:35
Comment From dude
Bombarding your queue with nonsensical nonsense is the goal today. This is what happens when you miss three weeks in a row.

9:35
Eno Sarris: Unsure if your posts will be any different than mine.

9:36
Comment From Nate
Grandal line ROS (assuming no suspension)? He seems to be already starting to bounce back…

9:36
Eno Sarris: I like him in the .260-.280/double digit power group that starts around #8 and goes to #16.

9:36
Comment From Johnny
Carter Capps closing at some point this season or AAA?

9:37
Eno Sarris: He’ll be fine. He’ll close after Wilhelmsen I bet, but not this year.

9:37
Comment From Bruce
But Heyward is still bad! how can we be sure hes a buy low?

9:37
Eno Sarris: He’s hitting more fly balls, should turn into power. Luck stats look like they should regress.

9:37
Comment From one more
Cespedes/Shields/Parker or Ellsbury/Darvish? 10-team with OPS, K/9, IP, QS (no wins)

9:37
Eno Sarris: Ells/Darvish fairly clearly to me.

9:38
Comment From jimbo
Is Leonys Martin 10-team league material? 5th OF?

9:38
Eno Sarris: Only if you have a decent bench. Not a starter v LHP.

9:38
Comment From Alex
Is it time to sell Matt Holliday while he has some name value of his consistency left? He’s been, shall I say, not stellar this year.

9:38
Eno Sarris: True talent .285/25 guy with no speed, lots of Rs/RBIs. Still pretty sweet.

9:38
Eno Sarris: But in keeper league, sell sometime this year, shoulda sold last year like I said.

9:38
Comment From THE Gregorius D.I.D.(i)
Fun Fact of the day: Nolan Ryan had a career .265 babip (weak contact much?)

9:39
Eno Sarris: SIERA found a link between high K% and and low BABIPs.

9:39
Eno Sarris: yes. but. setback.

9:39

Was just browsing stats the other day. Found this interesting. Almost identical stats for Chris Carter and Mark Reynolds yet one is owned in 25% of leagues, the other 75%

Jake McGee or Joel Peralta (5×5)

9:41
Eno Sarris: Jake.

9:41
Comment From JEB
I know he has less than 100 PA’s but isn’t Puig a keeper in most formats? That’s the only part of the Shields/H.Bailey trade that bothers me.

9:41
Eno Sarris: Oh, keeper. Yeah, Like I said in my article, in a keeper league, I found the guy, gonna be hard to get him from me.

9:42
Comment From Rags
Hurt by NIN? In a NL only keeper roto. 12 points out of first and 10 points above 3rd. I’ve got BJ Upton, Rickie Weeks, Prado, and Braun. Do I sell the farm and try to pick up more ground on first? Or assume these guys turn it around and push me over the top?

9:42
Eno Sarris: Can’t sell low on those guys. They are your trade deadline acquisitions.

ROS Coco or Bourn?

Looking to sell high on Matt Moore in an AL keeper league. Do you agree, and who’s a good AL hitter to target?

I hope you’re not saying that Johnny Cash did ‘Hurt’ better than NIN.

Any change Josh Hamilton or Mike Morse will turn it around in the second half? They’ve been killing me this year.

Will Nolasco (on the Dodgers where he apparently will be traded today) or Straily a better option RoS?

9:48

Comment From THE Gregorius D.I.D.(i)
Cespedes: are the BB% decline (8-7.5%) and K% increase (18.9-24.6) concerns a little overblown and really it’s just the low LD rate (19.6-14.4% and related babip dip .326-.244) that’s really depressing his production so far?

9:49
Eno Sarris: 24.6% is a big number. That’s the one that bothers me. His swSTR was too high for his K% last year. It’s the one thing that bothers me about Puig too. But Puig is younger, so more likely to improve K%/swSTR, and also I believe he’ll steal more because of his age.

What do you think will happen when Beachy returns to the Braves? Would they really send Teheran down/to the pen?

9:57
Eno Sarris: That’s my thought. they want to limit his IP anyway, most likely.

9:57
Comment From Patrick
Domonic Brown shows little to no discernible weakness versus LHPs in his splits. Was the caution shown by the organization overblown, or are we seeing the fruits of his mechanical labors?

9:58
Eno Sarris: I think the new swing helped him a lot in this regard. His hands are now in a ready position faster, which means he can turn on inside pitches from lefties quicker.

Mets make any moves at the deadline (Murphy, Parnell, Marcum, etc.)? Any specific moves you’d like to see them make?

I know you said you suck at math now, but I am going to ask a mathy question anyway. It seems clear that player valuation should change from league to league throughout the year, depending on the distibution of stats in each league. For example, hr might be tightly contested in one league, but not another. Do you adjust for this in the leagues you play and is there any way to quantify how valuation should change?

10:05
Eno Sarris: I do that intuitively, and it becomes obvious fairly quickly in trade talks. As for doing it in a mathy way… yes, there could be a way to input your league stats and look at the impact an FA or trade acq would make. I believe Bloomberg’s old Front Office did that.

10:05

Question on Billy Butler. you say he is a true talent 280 hitter…the last 4 years his average is about .306? Can you please explain the gap? Appreciate it, as always.

10:08
Eno Sarris: good point. I just meant this year. Cause a .340 BABIP seems like it’s out of reach for him. And if you put his .300 BABIPs together with his lower power years, you get .280-.290 IMO. Better than now, not as good as last year.
