Hi Eno. I’m in an AL-only league and wondering if you think Chase Headley turns out to be the best bat coming over from the NL at the deadline?

12:03
Eno Sarris: I don’t think a big bat will move into the AL. I guess the only one that might is Oscar Taveras, and in the short term… Chase Headley has a lifetime .286 BA and .446 slugging away from PetCo. Is OT a definite to surpass that in his first taste of the league, in a pitcher’s park like Tampa? I take the bird in hand.

12:03
Comment From American League Hustle
I just stashed Derek Holland in my AL-only league. What can I expect ROS? More importantly, I now have him cheap for next year, so should I be excited about that?

12:03
Eno Sarris: I had like four shares going in, just because I like filling up my DL slots. I’ve sold a share or two since. I’m not sure he’ll do much better than high threes ERA, he’s still kind of a fastball/slider guy. But cheap? Yes, there’s some reason to be excited. Lefty velocity!

12:04
Comment From Jon
Hi, Eno. Any idea what the Dodgers plan to do with Alex Guerrero if Dee Gordon doesn’t regress?

12:04
Eno Sarris: I think I saw he’s taking reps at third!

12:04
Comment From jon
With trades, I’m now down to Rosenthal, Perkins, Casilla, Giles in my 10-team league for RPs. Good enough or speculate on one of the Tigers guys?

12:04
Eno Sarris: Seems fine to me. If Paps doesn’t get traded, you have a slot to go hunting with.

12:04
Eno Sarris: (Papelbon seems like a lock to be traded after the comments)

12:05
Comment From Tony the Tiger
Please tell me there’s nothing to worry about with Max Scherzer and his neck spasms!!!

12:05
Eno Sarris: No idea! I doubt it’s Fielder’s problem.

12:05
Comment From Larry David
Shields + X = Darvish. Where X can be any of Choo, Dickerson, Springer, Butler.

12:05
Eno Sarris: Math so hard. I pick a^2. Wait, I mean. Butler.

12:06
Eno Sarris: If you selling Shields. If you trying to make a fair deal… Dickerson?

12:07
Comment From jon
Until Mauer’s back in 10-team: Castro, D’Arnaud, Chooch? need avg/rbi

12:07
Eno Sarris: Gotta be Chooch I guess.

12:07
Comment From Raul
Where do you stand on George Springer in a keeper league? I saw ESPN’s updated keeper rankings had him at #9 overall. Are you on board with that kind of ranking? How much can the batting average improve?

12:07
Eno Sarris: I don’t think he can better that batting average very much. Even with a .350 BABIP, he’d have a .250 BA. I can’t call him a top-tenner with that batting average.

12:07
Comment From Phillip
Thoughts on the Soria trade?

12:08
Eno Sarris: Totally avoidable on the part of the Tigers. Use the Nathan money, and spread it around (Qualls, Benoit, flier like Hanrahan) and even if the flier doesn’t work out, you find a closer, or you’re in the same position looking to trade for a closer but you’re not locked into a long term deal at much money.

12:09
Eno Sarris: I think Feliz will close. Soria might take Nathan’s job, but not right away. If that’s what you were asking.

12:09
Comment From Snuffy
Hi Eno. Please rank these closers/potential closers for value next year in a 12-team dynasty league: Watson, Giles, H.Rondon, N.Ramirez, Putnam, Petricka, Ottavino, Feliz. Thanks very much.

12:09
Eno Sarris: Feliz, Giles, Ottavino, Rondon, Ramirez?

12:10
Comment From Texas Dolly
Hi Eno! Thanks as always for hosting the chat. Easily one of my favourite events each week. Just wondering what your thoughts are on Shin-Soo Choo going forward? He was one of my big ticket items this season, and he’s obviously been a huge disappointment. That said, I’m wondering if I should be afraid of him being shut down soon and look to sell at a huge loss, or simply ride out the wave and hope for the best? Thanks in advance!

12:10
Eno Sarris: I think you can’t drop — too much upside — and I don’t think they going to shut him down right now. They’d rather their investment didn’t look so horrible in the first year, I’d bet.

12:11
Okkervil River:

12:11
Eno Sarris: (that was dedicated to Choo, it’s definitely not HIS season)

12:11
Comment From Earl
In a dynasty league, Puig is a top __ overall player.

12:12
Eno Sarris: Now there’s a top-tenner. For some reason, his swinging strike rate hasn’t been as much of a drag on his K%. I suspect that will change a bit in the future, but for now, he’s a much better bet.

12:12
Comment From Guest
Eno, start Rubby in Toronto today?

12:12
Eno Sarris: For some reason, the slider hasn’t done well by whiff rate, but he has velocity, a great change… and some homeritis so far. I might sit for this one if you have any reason to protect your innings.

12:12
Comment From Jay L-ENO
Brandon McCarthy. OK to start in 1st time around the league? or is he better/worse? he looked ok last time out.

12:14
Eno Sarris: Sinker / cutter / curve is not too far from fastball / slider / curve, which is working for Garrett Richards. I think the cutter is a significant thing for him. But I still think some homers will leave that park and he’s more of a 3.75-3.9 guy.

12:14
Comment From Jay Hay
Thanks for chatting Eno. Looking for a high-ceiling SP prospect for the long term. Too early to stash Julio Urias?

12:14
Eno Sarris: He looked so awesome in Minny. I was fawning. Even if he’s 80% blind in one eye. Just adds a fear factor.

12:14
Comment From Ryan
Any reason at all to believe A. Craig will turn things around? He’s been dropped in my league. Cron, Pearce, Gillaspie, Vogt, and Lind are the other options. Thanks.

12:15
Eno Sarris: His upside (.280/18) seems to be below a healthy Lind, and Pearce should be able to do something similar in the short run too.

12:15
Comment From Please Help
I’m in an AL-only league and need to improve in AVG and SB. Can Eno recommend three players that should be my ideal trade targets? Thanks!!!

12:15
Eno Sarris: No Eno cannot. Well, it’s super hard this way. Easier: you find teams that are responding to trade offers, have extra SB to deal, and want what you have to sell! Then we can start talking in realities.

12:15
Comment From Christian
Can you write me a work note so I don’t have to go to a meeting and I can just talk beer and baseball here?

12:16
Eno Sarris: Done. “Christian’s house is on fire, he’ll be back at two.”

12:16
Comment From Jon
Travis d’Arnaud.. how real is the latest surge? top 12 fantasy catcher ROS?

12:16
Eno Sarris: I think he can be a .260/18 guy, like about half the catchers in ball.

12:16
Comment From Marlon Brando
ENOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

12:16
Eno Sarris: STELLAAAAAA (no, no I don’t want an Artois, was just yelling)

12:16
Comment From Matt
what are thought on the Braves farm system? Specifically, in their approach to developing pitchers?

12:17
Eno Sarris: I don’t see a guiding principle other than “low and away.” Not like the Pirates’ sinker love, or the banning of the cutter in other orgs. They’re just pretty good and spotting stuff, don’t seem to be scared away by crazy mechanics.

12:17
Comment From Mano e Eno
Cut Leonys Martin for A.J. Pollock (when healthy), James Jones, or Kiermaier?

12:17
Eno Sarris: Nope.

12:18
Comment From Alan
Hey Eno – I’ve got Michael Brantley as an 18th round keeper, but he’s currently the fifth highest scorer in my points league. What should I do with him? I’m leaning toward keeping him for the rest of the year and then trying to use him to upgrade one of my keepers in the offseason. I’m just not sure what to expect out of him going forward.

12:19
Eno Sarris: Smells like a peak year to me. He’s 27 and never once before in the minors or majors did he ISO over .120. (He’s at .191 now, I checked) Heck, in the minors his ISO might have been under .100. Yeah I’d sell at the end of the season.

12:19
Comment From Jason Kipnis
Where’d my power go?

12:19
Eno Sarris: Into Jason’s Aching Oblique.

12:19
Comment From Bryce Harper
Make me good again please.

12:19
Eno Sarris: New batting stance. Also, you’re pretty good and super young.

12:20
Comment From Nathan
Eno, Fantasy Question: Cliff Lee vs. Arizona or Arrieta vs. St. Louis on Saturday? Basically this is a no brainer if Lee is in form, so the question would you take the risk of Lee being healthy enough versus a relatively weaker line-up, or is Arrieta the safe bet.

12:20
Eno Sarris: I’d take even a reduced Lee.

12:20
Comment From Brian
In a league that values R/RBI, how would you rank Gregory Polanco, George Springer and Oscar Taveras going forward in a keeper league if they all have similar values?

12:21
Eno Sarris: You mean if they have similar prices? Polanco is going to give you R, Springer both, OT both. If you don’t need BA, Springer probably wins. But with BA… Polanco close. OT won’t steal, so he would need to have a ton of power or a .300+ BA…

12:21
Comment From RAAAAAaaaahuh?
dickey gives me heart attacks

12:21
Eno Sarris: Well, even HE doesn’t know where the ball is going.

12:22
Comment From Mike at the Ted
How are you liking Stroman ROS, and is there any reason to worry about an innings limit?

12:23
Eno Sarris: 120 IP last year, 90 so far this year. He might only have another 60 left. But they did slow him down, so 60 might take him to the end of the season.

12:23
Nanz Calrissian:

12:23
Eno Sarris: Mostly shared for the name of the song and band.

12:24
Comment From Eric
5×5 OBP league. Segura or Alcantara ROS? Segura’s been awful and his OBP is killing me

12:25
Eno Sarris: I don’t even know how to answer Segura questions any more. I’ll say that AA’s OBP upside is no better than Segura’s, and he’s probably not going to steal as many bases…

12:25
Comment From Max Fisher Players
Should I be concerned about minor, I mean he cant be this bad right, or just go all dropsies in a 12 team

12:26
Eno Sarris: You know, he might just give up a few too many homers. Might just be a problem he has. But his K-BB suggests that 3.7/1.2/1HR9 is still more probable than he’s broken.

12:27
Comment From Maxamuz

12:28
Comment From Tommy La Stella Was a Diver and He Was Always Down
Yordano Ventura’s lack of Ks after coming off the DL: cause for concern or not?

12:28
Eno Sarris: I don’t even get why he doesn’t strike out a guy per inning when healthy, but yeah, he might not be fully healthy. interesting question for me in redrafts: Ventura or deGrom. Might be DeGrom.

12:28
Comment From PS
would kissing an actual Trout be close enough?

12:28
Eno Sarris: Can’t be the same thing.

12:29
Comment From Sadwick
The Stella remark brought to mind an interesting question. I have a friend that is teaching me to paint, and her favorite beer is Stella Artois. I favor porters, stouts, IPA’s, and darker ales so I usually don’t have much she’ll drink. What craft beers can I look for similar to Stella that she might drink? (I live in Tennessee if that helps)

12:29
Eno Sarris: Bring her a pinkus organic ur-pils. Or just a Victory Prima if you can find it.

12:29
Comment From Tom
Good god, enough with the Youtube videos. Slows the important info like beer and fantasy.

12:29

We are moving apartments at the end of August. I am not looking forward to this. You said your crew is moving this month. I feel your pain. How far you going?

Favorite book you’ve read recently? Baseball related or not doesn’t matter.

12:30

Whatever happened to Mookie Mania? what would it take to have the Bosox play their youth (jbj and mookie) over gomes and old veterans going forward?

12:31
Eno Sarris: It’s always hard to hit the ground running in your debut. I still love him.

12:31
Comment From A Hesitant Northsider
All of the Cubs’ best-regarded prospects are at AA or higher now. Can I make some room in my heart for this team again, or will I be hurt once more?

12:32
Eno Sarris: At least one will bust. It’s a fact of life. But the ones that make it… they will be glorious.

12:32
Comment From Mooking for Love
12 team 27 man roster 5×5 keeper auction (~$270)…Odor worth a look next year for $4?

12:32
Eno Sarris: Shared for the handle. The question… Well, what’s his role? I can’t see it, but if you can get him for cheap, and hold him. What if Beltre doesn’t sign?

12:32
Comment From Rated Rookie
Which pitching arsenal and prospect do you like better, longterm: Archie Bradley (FB/CB) or Carlos Rodon (FB/SL)? Also, which one develops a useful CH first?

12:33
Eno Sarris: Bradley’s arsenal, but his command is worse. I haven’t found a difference between breakers and ability to develop a change. IF they haven’t yet, they should try a splitter because I think that helps guys who are natural breaker guys.

12:33
Comment From Mike at the Ted
Keuchel hit a wall?

12:34
Eno Sarris: Talked to him. Grips piece monday. No, he admitted the different usage was due to his injury. Said he had a golf ball sized swelling in his wrist, it’s gone now. Last game was normal usage.

12:34
Comment From The Laffey Curve
Which method of fantasy player valuation do you endorse: Z-scores, Standings Gain Points, or other?

12:34

Comment From Dr. Met
Guess who’s back, back again, Wilmer’s back, tell a friend!

12:35
Eno Sarris: Ruben’s got a decent OBP, but he’s been disappointing to me.

12:35
Comment From Krusty
Dyson is 4th best hitter (WRC+) on Royals while playing great defense and running well. Do you think he gets consistent PA’s vs all right handed pitchers, going fwd?

12:35
Eno Sarris: He’s interesting going forward, moreso than this year, when they’ll just muddle along with four guys.

12:36
Comment From Kentavius
Why is Degrom a 26 year old rookie? Just a late-bloomer or something else?

12:36
Eno Sarris: Tommy John.

12:37
Comment From Big Joe Mufferaw
Thoughts on switching to a 6 man rotation and ‘Grippier balls’? Darvish said plain and simple, that those are the reasons why their are so many arm injuries.

12:38
Eno Sarris: I wrote a piece for Sports on Earth about the six-man rotation. I like it. Half the TJs (fewer even) in Japan, and they get extra rest. Grippier balls might be a way to get around the stupid pine tar issues, too.

12:38
Comment From Kentavius
Pretend for a second that Michael Pineda isn’t always hurt. Would you rather have him or Zack Wheeler?

12:38
Eno Sarris: Wheeler has the same velocity, a wider arsenal, but less command. I can’t pretend that hard though so I go ZW.

12:38
Comment From J.S. Bach
Barret Loux was 1.6 in 2010, two years later turned into Geo Soto and now forgotten. Let this be a requiem for Barret Loux.

12:39
Eno Sarris: Let’s hope this is not a requiem for Brady Aiken.

12:39
Comment From Fish
What the hell does ‘grippier balls’ mean?

12:39
Eno Sarris: Higher seams.

12:39

New to Fangraphs but a nerd so I’m excited. With so much info, could you tell me where to start to make the most of what all the stats mean? Thanks!

12:39

12:40
Comment From The Rain in Despaigne Falls Mainly on the Plain
Odrisamer Despaigne….somehow actually legit or should I get in my bomb shelter and prepare for the impending explosion?

12:40
Eno Sarris: I wrote about him this week, and it’s hard to do him justice quickly. Tons of pitches, tons of arm angles, tons of movement, very few whiffs.

12:40

Why is baltimore looking for pitching upgrades when they have Gausman (and maybe Bundy) ready for action?

do you trust Alex Gordon’s UZR and therefore WAR

12:42
Eno Sarris: He’s a really good defender. Way more mobile than you’d think for a former third baseman. And the angle to the plate is the same as he’s played his whole life.

12:42
Comment From Goat

My friend tells me smugly that he drafts with injuries in mind and that's why he has faced one (short) DL stint the whole year. Such bollocks.

True talent level for Kevin Kiermaier? He has talked about changing his swing and his batted ball distance looks good.

Epstein on record unhappy with the Cards getting a competitive balance pick, and a litany of people piling on about how a team as good as the Cards shouldn’t get one. Are they missing the point in this criticism? This is clearly *not* about merit — the regular draft is. Change your formula for determining CBP eligibility (to incl. payroll, maybe?) or think of another way to even out, but thinking that we should penalize a small-market team for being good in a system that’s working to level the playing field seems to miss the boat a bit.

Hi Eno, Drew Hutchinson is at 113 innings this year so far. With his injury history, he hasn’t seen this many innings for a few years (majors & minors: 2013-56, 2012-79, 2011-149, 2010-69). Would you expect him to hit a wall as the season goes on? Or with 12 ER’s in his last 2 starts (8 innings combined), could he be hitting it already?

I think people are ridiculously impatient with Bryce Harper. He was the youngest player for either team in AA on his rehab assignment. Perspective.

1:27
Eno Sarris: Yes, but we’re getting a decent sample size too. Since steals age so poorly, you aren’t going to get steals from a fantasy perspective. Also, any reason a young guy would get injured more? We can take something away from the injuries (injuries project more injuries) and the lack of steals, at least.

I get you thinking he won’t steal, but claiming a peak of .280/30 is way premature IMO. He damn near did that at 19 (.270, 22 in 140 games). Obviously his injuries are an issue. But other than that, the sky is still the limit for him. Very few have done what he’s done at his age and Mike Trout distorts what people think of as normal for his age group

Harper hurt his thumb sliding into a base. How does the “injuries predict more injuries” theory handle fluky things like that? I understand how it works with pulled muscles and all that. Fluke injuries seem unpredictable.

1:33
Eno Sarris: That’s the tough part when you have blanket findings on injuries like that. But there can be a way that playing style can fill in the blanks. Base stealers hurt fingers, for example. Carlos Quentin hurts himself getting hit.

Anthony Rendon playing over his head with the bat, at his peak, or still some good room until the ceiling? Same exact questions on Dozier. Either/both worth keeping over e5 where Edwin can only be kept for 1 year, but the others for 3 years?

1:37
Eno Sarris: ooh that’s tasty. Rendon is 24. So there’s some power projection left. He should walk more in the future to help his R/OBP. Steal a little less. Let’s guesstimate his peak, in the next three years, at .290/.360 with 25 homers and 5 sb. Sign me up. Dozier is 27, so peaking perhaps, and has more issues wrt to his batting average and batted ball mix. I might keep Rendon and Edwin.
