Hi Eno. I’m in an AL-only league and wondering if you think Chase Headley turns out to be the best bat coming over from the NL at the deadline?

Eno Sarris: I don’t think a big bat will move into the AL. I guess the only one that might is Oscar Taveras, and in the short term… Chase Headley has a lifetime .286 BA and .446 slugging away from PetCo. Is OT a definite to surpass that in his first taste of the league, in a pitcher’s park like Tampa? I take the bird in hand.

I just stashed Derek Holland in my AL-only league. What can I expect ROS? More importantly, I now have him cheap for next year, so should I be excited about that?

Eno Sarris: I had like four shares going in, just because I like filling up my DL slots. I’ve sold a share or two since. I’m not sure he’ll do much better than high threes ERA, he’s still kind of a fastball/slider guy. But cheap? Yes, there’s some reason to be excited. Lefty velocity!

Where do you stand on George Springer in a keeper league? I saw ESPN’s updated keeper rankings had him at #9 overall. Are you on board with that kind of ranking? How much can the batting average improve?

Eno Sarris: I don’t think he can better that batting average very much. Even with a .350 BABIP, he’d have a .250 BA. I can’t call him a top-tenner with that batting average.

Thoughts on the Soria trade?

Eno Sarris: Totally avoidable on the part of the Tigers. Use the Nathan money, and spread it around (Qualls, Benoit, flier like Hanrahan) and even if the flier doesn’t work out, you find a closer, or you’re in the same position looking to trade for a closer but you’re not locked into a long term deal at much money.

Eno Sarris: I think Feliz will close. Soria might take Nathan’s job, but not right away. If that’s what you were asking.

He was one of my big ticket items this season, and he’s obviously been a huge disappointment. Eno Sarris: I think you can’t drop — too much upside — and I don’t think they going to shut him down right now. They’d rather their investment didn’t look so horrible in the first year, I’d bet.

Eno Sarris: Now there’s a top-tenner. For some reason, his swinging strike rate hasn’t been as much of a drag on his K%. I suspect that will change a bit in the future, but for now, he’s a much better bet.

Eno Sarris: For some reason, the slider hasn’t done well by whiff rate, but he has velocity, a great change… and some homeritis so far. I might sit for this one if you have any reason to protect your innings.

Brandon McCarthy. OK to start in 1st time around the league? or is he better/worse? he looked ok last time out.

Eno Sarris: Sinker / cutter / curve is not too far from fastball / slider / curve, which is working for Garrett Richards. I think the cutter is a significant thing for him. But I still think some homers will leave that park and he’s more of a 3.75-3.9 guy.

Eno Sarris: His upside (.280/18) seems to be below a healthy Lind, and Pearce should be able to do something similar in the short run too.

Eno Sarris: No Eno cannot. Well, it’s super hard this way. Easier: you find teams that are responding to trade offers, have extra SB to deal, and want what you have to sell! Then we can start talking in realities.

Hey Eno – I’ve got Michael Brantley as an 18th round keeper, but he’s currently the fifth highest scorer in my points league. What should I do with him? I’m leaning toward keeping him for the rest of the year and then trying to use him to upgrade one of my keepers in the offseason. I’m just not sure what to expect out of him going forward.

Eno Sarris: Smells like a peak year to me. He’s 27 and never once before in the minors or majors did he ISO over .120. (He’s at .191 now, I checked) Heck, in the minors his ISO might have been under .100. Yeah I’d sell at the end of the season.

Eno, Fantasy Question: Cliff Lee vs. Arizona or Arrieta vs. St. Louis on Saturday? Basically this is a no brainer if Lee is in form, so the question would you take the risk of Lee being healthy enough versus a relatively weaker line-up, or is Arrieta the safe bet.

Eno Sarris: You mean if they have similar prices? Polanco is going to give you R, Springer both, OT both. If you don’t need BA, Springer probably wins. But with BA… Polanco close. OT won’t steal, so he would need to have a ton of power or a .300+ BA…

Eno Sarris: Bradley’s arsenal, but his command is worse. I haven’t found a difference between breakers and ability to develop a change. IF they haven’t yet, they should try a splitter because I think that helps guys who are natural breaker guys.

Eno Sarris: I wrote a piece for Sports on Earth about the six-man rotation. I like it. Half the TJs (fewer even) in Japan, and they get extra rest. Grippier balls might be a way to get around the stupid pine tar issues, too.

Are they missing the point in this criticism? This is clearly *not* about merit — the regular draft is. Change your formula for determining CBP eligibility (to incl. payroll, maybe?) or think of another way to even out, but thinking that we should penalize a small-market team for being good in a system that’s working to level the playing field seems to miss the boat a bit.

Hi Eno, Drew Hutchinson is at 113 innings this year so far. With his injury history, he hasn’t seen this many innings for a few years (majors & minors: 2013-56, 2012-79, 2011-149, 2010-69). Eno Sarris: Yes, but we’re getting a decent sample size too. Since steals age so poorly, you aren’t going to get steals from a fantasy perspective. Also, any reason a young guy would get injured more? We can take something away from the injuries (injuries project more injuries) and the lack of steals, at least.

I get you thinking he won’t steal, but claiming a peak of .280/30 is way premature IMO. He damn near did that at 19 (.270, 22 in 140 games). Obviously his injuries are an issue. But other than that, the sky is still the limit for him. Very few have done what he’s done at his age and Mike Trout distorts what people think of as normal for his age group

Harper hurt his thumb sliding into a base. How does the “injuries predict more injuries” theory handle fluky things like that? I understand how it works with pulled muscles and all that. Fluke injuries seem unpredictable.

Eno Sarris: That’s the tough part when you have blanket findings on injuries like that. But there can be a way that playing style can fill in the blanks. Base stealers hurt fingers, for example. Carlos Quentin hurts himself getting hit.

Let’s guesstimate his peak, in the next three years, at .290/.360 with 25 homers and 5 sb. Sign me up. Dozier is 27, so peaking perhaps, and has more issues wrt to his batting average and batted ball mix. I might keep Rendon and Edwin.

Eno Sarris: Surplus. And I’m struggling to trade surplus when you can turn a team around fairly quickly with some luck. Not sure I’ll trade Trout, even for Bryant and Fernandez.
